I am from the second district and will be casting my vote this coming elections. Para nako, wa may mapili nilang duha. I am worried about Arroyo seeking a seat in the congress and doing her best to find allies as early as now.

NONE OF THE ABOVE!

Aniay akong panglantaw kang Cesar Montano http://josephilsaraspe.blogspot.com/2009/04/cesar-montano-future-governor-of-bohol.html. Ako lang ning komento sa dihang akong nadungog nga molansad daw siya pagka gobernador sa Bohol.

i come back at home, read for a while, and then unleash some stress through poems here.
Its good too to think about something aside from work.

At last, DepEd has realized this almost neglected area of research on language acquisition and concept formation. A Mathematics teacher back home, I noticed several times how the students find it difficult to understand mathematical concept in English (with an exception to some whose grasp of English language goes with the concepts to be learned).

Kung concept formation lang ang hisgutan, nganong pugson man nato ang atong mga bata to study the concepts in English nga English is language lang man na and that would not even help sa analytical skill sa bata? For me, as I have observed, mas confident ang mga students nga mo learn sa mga concepts (am talkin' bout Math) if they understand the language being used as medium of instruction. SAKTO! Have the students study those subject using the second language kung ready na sila.

Here in Thailand, I am amazed at how the students could easily read English words when in fact lahi ra ang characters nga ilang gigamit and then usa lang ang subject nila nga English. Those researches in the field of language acquisition have explained this phenomenon already.

I am positive for that TRANSFORMATION!

As I have said earlier, there are so many things in the system of our education which need more focus than this simple addition of one year in all degree courses in college. If this additional one year for all degree courses aims to produce graduates of higher quality, then there's no way for this initiative to succeed. There are so many lapses even in the basic education sector. If we have quality basic education system, there would be no question that we would have quality graduates in college. Education starts from the very beginning and not only in college.

Do these people realize that students just keep on studying a simple lesson over and over again? MASTERY LEARNING in basic education institutions is the sole answer!

@Lorenzo
Thank you for visiting my blog.

They're all doing well Enzo. I am still doing my thesis and also preparing a lot for the next school year for I might be handling pre-calculus, physics and other sciences in the specialized field in upper secondary level. I am very optimistic and hoping that everything will go well. It's a big transition after after more than two years of focus in English as Second Language (ESL) and content ESL (Mathematics) in the elementary level. I am learning and I will be learning with my students for sure.

For now, I have to enjoy my holiday which would start next week and be ready for the summer course which would commence on the 30th of this month.

How about you? Kumusta na???

Let's all stop this blame game because this is the very reason why we couldn't move towards progress. Instead of thinking of solutions to solve this "corruption problem" in our country, we stick unto finding the faults and not the way to correct the mistakes which have been committed. If we would know that the church has a mistake, could we correct them? NO!

In my previous post in this thread (enhancing Values Education) I have stated how the government could invest on training the students to become morally upright citizens which I think the wisest way to solve the problems we are facing right now. Let's not sit in a corner and say that the Philippines has no hope because the government is like this and like that and the church is like this and like that. As long as we are alive, we can contribute something for the betterment of our country. However, we could not contribute something which we don't have. We could not satisfy others without satisfying ourselves first -- this is a universal imperative.

Yes, I know in my mind and in my heart what's the best thing to do. I know that the Philippines will have a brighter future if each citizen possesses right values and attitude to govern their lives and not to govern other people's lives. I know that this is the best thing to do but I am not doing it right now because I left my country in exchange of what I called greener pasture. Instead of training my own countrymen, I am training other citizens to realize their fullest potential. However, I do not feel guilty about it because I know that I am doing it, first, for myself. I do understand that I could not gratify others' needs and wants without gratifying my needs first.

I know I can do it but I have to do it in myself first before I would do it for others.

February 17, 2009, 08:16:56 PM
Health risk is not the only problem which can be associated to the booming call center industry in the Philippines. A professor of mine once told that call centers are also capsizing the human resources of the country because qualified graduates (e.g., engineers, teachers, programmers) would prefer to settle for these high-paying call center jobs because of the attrractive compensation the companies are offering than really working at their respective fields where they could be highly utilized. The job of a CSR/CSA can be done by high school graduates whose English are of high quality.

The corruption in the Philippines (which is a "Catholic" country per se) is not a failure of the church itself because if we will try to look unto it, the church and the state is separated (although the extent of sepparation is not as high as in the U.S.A.).

If we would only look at the other side of the issue, everything rooted from  education itself. Even if religion is responsible in developing the moral attributes of every member, the government still has the highest responsibility of developing morally upright citizens.

However, the system of education provided by the country gives less importance to values education because the development of the students' cognitive skills are of the highest importance. Looking back in my basic education years, Values Education is not a big deal for us and it has been shown over and over again. We were given books for other subjects but not for values education although there were times wherein we enjoyed some values books but they were obviously of less "value" than the other books. Students would rather choose to fail in Values Education (because the credit is lesser/ sometimes it's 0 credit) than in Science, English or Mathematics.

In addition to, most Values Education teachers are teaching values as their extra subject and most of the times, there are no Values Education specialists unlike Math, Science, English and others. The government should have realized that Values Education is not something that would be taken for granted or would be given less importance.

And now, where's the root?

If English is crazy, then all others will be. That "craziness" is a unique characteristic of every language.  In linguistics, that property is called arbitrary. Language's symbols are arbitrary. We have to understand that language (of any kind and origin) follows distinct symbols like phonemes (sound), morphemes (words) and syntax (sentences). However, the symbols (like gramatical rules and words) are based on an "agreed-upon" words to represent things, qualities, etc. and do not have direct relationship to the thing it is representing.

Example: Why do we call dog "DOG" when in fact the name seems to be irrelevant to the animal? Why can't we name it "BOW-WOW" which is, I think, more relevant because we hear them bark with that sound?

We call our capital city Tagbilaran not because of those so many myths and legends behind its name (which could be true) but because the word is the agreed name for the place. That shows the arbitrariness of language. In the end, we will understand that the main reason why we have language is for us to communicate and not just to name all those things and qualities around us.

Notice the deafs and mutes when they communicate using sign language, we could observe that most of the signs are not relevant to what they stand for.

BTW, the post was so funny but it would help language teachers help the learners learn language better.

I have read a thread here about the proper usage of who and whom. People are usually confused when to use who and when to use whom. The only thing that we have to remember is that: who=subject (doer of the action) while whom=object (receiver of the action).

WHO: The man who is wearing brown shirt is my father. (the man is the one doing the action (wearing) therefor who should be used)

WHOM: The man whom I was talking with is my father. (take note that the subject is I (doing the action which is talking) and the receiver of the action is the man therefor whom should be used because the man is the object)

I hope this helps. It's the easiest way to remember the use of who and whom as I have learned, so far.

KALAHI is a new project of the Arroyo administration which kicked off last 2002. The project has plenty of programs under it like Education Assistance Program (in which I am one of the beneficiaries) and Livelihood Program. After the project was successfully implemented in pilot towns (Dagohoy and Danao), KALAHI-CIDDS followed wherein San Miguel and other towns became part.

It took time siguro tungod kay dili man pud dali-dali ang pag implement sa program and then the evaluation usually happens in the end or while the program is ongoing. At least, they were able to use the fund in a very proper way and they were able to implement the program successfully. It's a lot of hardwork and I know it because I have seen how our coordinators in the Educational Assistance Program have worked hard to monitor the program beneficiaries. I am very thankful to them for they have been part of what I am right now.

This thread is quite funny.

Although there are some universities which have started to develop Science and Mathematics textbooks (I heard Ateneo has developed one), it has to be understood that English has deeply rooted in Philippine education system that changing the medium of instruction from English to Filipino is a great education reform which would need an "excessive amount of money". There's so many issues facing the quality of our educatiion today which needs to be addressed.

Why did I say that it needs excessive amount of money? Here are the reasons:
1. We have to invest for the development of new textbooks (in Filipino language) which is more expensive than just revising the widely used textbooks in English.
2. We need to train Science and Mathematics teachers per se for them to adopt the changes that this new medium of instruction might bring. (Remember that teachers are trained in colleges and universities in English)
3. If the government is aware, researches have to conducted first in order for this policy to be implemented successfully. There should be pilot schools to measure the feasibility of the project/reform.

If something needs to be changed, it should be something which is not working or something which is causing a problem. English isn't causing problems in our government and it even helps us in sustaining our economy. WHY NOT CHANGE THOSE IRRESPONSIBLE EMPLOYEES IN THE DEPED, INSTEAD? hahahaha.....

If the reason of those "idiots" is that Filipinos start to lose their identity and values because of English then they are wrong. We are Filipinos even if we speak all the languages in the world. Give more attention on values integration in different academic disciplines because that is what we need and not eradicate something which has been so useful.

but education problems are systemic deficiencies. people in the system have figured out what's wrong with our education. yet they have no political will to resolve the issues. unfortunately, their apathy affects most of those who are down-under, people of lesser voice, people who can change yet too powerless to do it.

In some international conferences here, it's pretty funny how big countries like USA, UK and Singapore admit the current problems in their education system and that they are doing their best to patch things up. However, the Philippines always boasts for having the best system of education and there's no problem within it. Even the education of our country is politically driven. There are people who become voiceless in the name of politics which they claim as national mandate.

Teaching is not a lucrative job and not an attractive course for the Filipino youths and for this, the government has to do something. It's a very big problem. We are losing good teachers and our teacher-training institutions are becoming inefficient.

A very interesting article I've read from my friend's blog, www.heddatan.com, who is an English teacher by profession talks about what she has learned from a seminar by Stephen Krashen (www.sdkrashen.com) who is globally renowned in the field of linguistics and language education.

The article has mentioned that giving rewards for reading is potentially harmful in developing a child in becoming a life-long reader. WHY? First, it has to be understood that reading is not something that should be done in order to get reward because reading is a reward itself. Their is pleasure every time we read.

HOW CAN IT BE APPLIED IN SCHOOLS?
Questions may arise as to how to convince children to read considering that most of them have negative attitude towards reading. SIMPLE! We have to understand that as human beings, we have unique interests and so why not capitalize on our interests? If a child is interested at toys, do not force him/her to read Science books because you would certainly lead the child to hate reading in his/her entire life. If a child likes robots, give him books that's all about robots. In that article, Krashen dubbed it as the HOMERUN in reading.

Anybody here who loves to read? I am very sure that all of you have this one book which reinforced your love for reading. Try to recall, I know you have it. That book is your homerun according to Krashen.

In schools, we could observe that children are, often times, rewarded for reading. However, what kind of books can we find in the library? Math, Science and other non-interesting books for the children. Next time, instead of awarding those readers, capitalize on purchasing books which are of children's interests.

Back in college, there were more students who would pay for membership and in-house reading at Matthew Book Club (along Lessage Street) than spend time reading at the college library. What's in Matthew Book Club that's not in the college library that students love to go there and pay instead of spending time at the college library for free? We all know the answer.

To develop children/adults to become life-long readers they don't need to be forced or rewarded. This coincides with "Choice Theory" of Dr. William Glasser (www.wglaser.com) which states that (1) all we do is behave, (2) almost all behavior is chosen and (3) we are driven by our genes to satisfy five basic needs: survival, love and belonging, power, freedom and fun.

Applying in the context of reading (or learning in general), we do choices everyday (eat or not eat, study or not study, learn or not learn, etc.) and so the same thing must drive the students to read (or learn):
1. Give them freedom (do not force them to read/learn)
2. The students will soon find reading (or learning) as way to feel love and belongingness
3. They will realize very soon that they need to read (or learn) in order to survive
4. Until they will strive to read (or learn) in order to acquire power

I write a variety of articles which ranges from literary to academic articles. They might not be good but I write for the following reasons:

1. to express my thoughts (my opinions)... aron maka tulog ko ug dali :)
2. to share what I got from reading some articles and my opinion in it
3. to express my emotion (literary writing)
4. to help other people, especially teachers (I hope)
5. to be happy (writing is pleasure just like reading)

Sir Lorenzo, I like this thread for I am interested to learn more about Molecular Biology. However, I could not relate to other concepts you have mentioned because, I guess, there are previous concepts that I have to learn first before this one. I can recall only a little about my Chemistry class before.

As David Ausubel proposed, "Learners will learn more if they could find connection between existing knowledge and the lesson to be learned." For learning to be remarkable, it has to be meaningful and meaningfulness can only be provided through connection.

I am not wondering why, of all the sciences, Physics is the one that I like the most. It's because learning Physics is just like learning mathematics. Acceleration and velocity can be calculated through differentiation (differential calculus) and the change of the temperature of a certain body can be computed through differential equations. Newton likes Physics and Mathematics. He has great contribution in the field of Physics and Calculus.

Nevertheless, BRING IT ON Sir! I will follow this thread and will ask you if I have any confusion. For now, I have to read the entire lesson again. :D :D :D

Among the countries in the world, only Philippines has 10-year basic education curriculum, other countries have 12-year basic education curriculum.

There are so many problems in the education system of the Philippines right now which need to be be addressed by those people in authority aside from that increasing one year for all degree programs. As what I have observed, the problem is not lying in the higher education only but the biggest problem in education which affects the downward spiral of the Philippine economy lies heavily in our basic education system.

Most of the students entering college could hardly do basic algebraic operations which is supposed to be developed during high school years. I don't know if it has been changed but when I was teaching Mathematics in the Philippines, the following curriculum has been followed for high school Mathematics:

First Year: Elementary Algebra
Second Year: Intermediate Algebra
Third year: Geometry
Fourth Year: Advance Algebra and Basic Probability and Statistics

Well, as we can see, most of the mathematics courses in high school are dealing with ALGEBRA but aren't we surprised why students entering college could hardly do basic algebraic operations? There are students who could hardly determine the sum of x + x which is merely an addition of 1 banana + 1 banana = 2 bananas (x + x=2x). Here are some problems in the basic education system which I think must be resolved by the department of education:

1. There is much focus on the content of curriculum and less or zero focus on mastery learning.
The Philippines is following fixed curriculum provided by those people in authority. It is mandated that the all topics within the curriculum should be tackled within the specified curriculum days. I could still remember my high school math teacher who told us, "This topic is supposed to be completed within 3 days but we have been discussing days for 4 days so let's end it up." when we asked for more practice exercises and more explanation about a certain topic in Mathematics which we could hardly understand. MASTERY LEARNING is not emphasized and it's a very sad fact for the students who are ought to learn life skills and not just go through the topics within the curriculum.

2. Teaching for test is still blatantly practised.
Teaching is geared towards achieving high marks in the achievement test and not towards achieving the expected knowledge and skills. A teacher once told, "I have to teach all the topics specified in the curriculum because they will all come out in the National Achievement Test." Are our learners learning for the test? NO! NO! NO!

3. Stiff bureaucracy in the education system
The curriculum is still pre-determined by those "EXPERTS?" in the Department of Education. It's about time for our education administrators to wake up the diversity of our students (different needs, different environment, different social and economic status, different learning styles  etc.) and therefor ONE ABSOLUTE CURRICULUM could not work for all. The EXPERTS that they call who designed the curriculum doesn't have any idea of what's happening in BARANGAY CANLUBAS. Do they know the learners in such area? If no, what made them design and implement a curriculum for learners there. I agree that DepEd should set goals and standard for education that would reach to all types of learners but I am against of a centralized curriculum. TEACHERS should be given the task to assess the learners' needs and design a curriculum based on their needs and DepEd's goals and standards (although this is very expensive because it would require rigid training for teachers on assessment and curriculum design).

Hinaut unta!

I want them to have the chance to go to collegeâ€"even if their parents aren’t rich. ax2 + bx = c is a quadratic equation which can be transformed to the standard form: ax2 + bx - c = o

x can be solved using the quadratic formula but I don't know how to encode an equation here... :D
