Russian and US Satellites Collide
« on: February 12, 2009, 05:44:15 PM »
US and Russian communications satellites have collided in space in the first such reported accident.

A satellite owned by the US company Iridium hit a defunct Russian satellite at high speed nearly 780km (485 miles) over Siberia on Tuesday, Nasa said.

The risk to the International Space Station and a shuttle launch planned for later this month is said to be low.

The impact produced massive clouds of debris, and the magnitude of the crash is not expected to be clear for weeks.

There are thousands of man-made objects orbiting the earth, but this is thought to be the first time two intact spacecraft have hit each other, the BBC's Andy Gallacher in Miami says. - BBC

I acquainted someone in Los Angeles who happen to interview John Glen before and he said to me that he learned that there are still so many debris in the space agi sa mga junk sa mga space explorers and i read it somewhere pero gihilum man na sa governement kay it is very distructive man.

I hope mahulog tanan nga debris sa siberia and not stay on space.

Pastilan hasta sa space naa nay junk yard!

haha, eventually, gravitational pull will guarantee that these debris will fall back into the earth's atmosphere. Most of which will be purified and burned as it enters the planet's atmosphere.

There is  discussion here in Germany since everything is insured. What if a person will be hurt of any debris (hypothetically)?  Will the satellite owner pay the damages?

MOSCOW – Debris from this week's satellite collision could circle Earth for up to 10,000 years, threatening many other satellites in an already-crowded area, Russia's Mission Control chief said Friday.

Vladimir Solovyov said Tuesday's smashup of a derelict Russian military satellite and a working U.S. Iridium commercial satellite occurred some 500 miles (800 kilometers) above Earth — the busiest part of near-Earth space.

"800 kilometers is a very popular orbit which is used by Earth-tracking and communications satellites," Solovyov told reporters. "The clouds of debris pose a serious danger to them."

Im glad you found this article Kiams. I have been searching about this topic since long ago. I got an article about all these junks in space from the NG circulation sent to me years back but apparently due to my several relocations, some of my valuable articles were missing.

Crash of US, Russian satellites a threat in space
Updated February 13, 2009 01:41 AM

"There is a quite a lot of satellites in nearby orbits," he told The Associated Press. "The other 65 Iridium satellites in similar orbits will face the most serious risk, and there numerous earth-tracking and weather satellites in nearby orbits. Fragments may trigger a chain of collisions."

Both the US Space Surveillance Network and Russian Space Forces are tracking the debris, believed to be traveling at speeds of around 200 meters — or about 660 feet — per second.

NASA said it would take weeks to know the full magnitude of the crash, but both NASA and Russia's Roscosmos agencies said there was little risk to the international space station and its three crew members.

"There is no immediate danger, but we will carefully monitor the situation," Russian Mission Control spokesman Valery Lyndin told the AP. He noted the station's orbit has been adjusted in the past to dodge space debris.

The space junk also poses no threat to the space shuttle set to launch Feb. 22 with seven astronauts, US officials said, though that issue will be reviewed.

I think we have but not really our own because we share it with other countries in Asia. However, I heard that Philippines is underway in launching its orbitting satellite soon. But how soon is soon? That I don't know.

It's very useful especially that Philippines is usually hit by calamities. At least, orbitting satellites could help predict probable disasters.

Aw sori Glace nawa man gud ahong antepara diri! hahahhahha

tym pa tood, mga igsoon, nia koy nabasahan nga kabahin sa Agila-II, excerpt ra kini:(ako lang kini nga gikub-kuban sa kaban sa google)...

The Mabuhay Philippines Satellite Corporation (MPSC) was established in 1994 as the the result of the efforts of a multinational joint venture composed of telecommunication and broadcast companies based in the Philippines, Indonesia and China. The participants in this joint venture included the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT), High Rise Realty Development Corporation, Pilipino Telephone Corp. (Piltel), Beijing High Den Enterprises Limited, Walden Group of Companies, GMA Network Inc., Philippine Satellite Corporation (PSC), Cable Entertainment Corporation (CEC), Siy Yap Group (SYG) and Philippine Communications Satellite Corporation (PCSC).

The company's Agila-II satellite system cost an estimated US$ 243 million to implement. Agila-II is a high-power communication spacecraft with a design based on the Space Systems/Loral FS-1300 satellite bus. This spacecraft had an electrical capacity of more than 9 kilowatts at launch and is expected to produce an estimated 8.2 kilowatts at its end of life (EOL). This makes it one of the most powerful communication satellites ever built and launched into space. Deployed to orbit by a Chinese Long March 3B rocket on 20 August 1997, Agila-II is expected to achieve a mission lifetime of more than 15 years.

Agila-II carries 30 C-Band transponders with 27 watt amplifiers and 24 Ku-band transponders with 110 watt amplifiers--more than enough capacity to relay 50,000 simultaneous two-way telephone conversations and 190 channels of digital TV programming.

The satellite's C-band coverage beam illuminates Bangladesh, China, the Hawaiian islands, India, Japan, Pakistan, The Philippines, and Southeast Asia, while the Ku-band coverage zone encompasses Taiwan, portions of mainland China and Vietnam, as well as the entire Philippines archipelago. The satellite's 24 Ku-band transponders may also be commanded by ground control to combine into 12 high-powered transponders with 220-watt amplifiers for the purpose of broadcasting direct-to-home digital TV services.

The spacecraft is presently located at 146 degrees east longitude. The Aguila satellite control and management facilities are located at the MPSC Space Center in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone. ..etc. etc.
