this was a few days ago; call this delayed reporting thus...

my sister, who's still on chemotherapy, received an award as one of the outstanding alumni in the field of literary and speech arts during the homecoming event of our alma mater.  she had our niece, another alumna of the school, beside her, ready to receive the award for her in case all those medicines in her bloodstream get the better of her.  (i chose to stay in the sidelights.)

my sister managed to stand up and go to the stage, in flapper-era gown and headdress (to cover her baldness) and surgical mask.  she got a standing ovation from a crowd that filled the whole auditorium!  was i teary-eyed.  how proud our father would have been had he been around to physically witness this sister who was always the bravest one among us his children.

funny baya akong acquisition sa secondhand piano.  paid it with a postdated check kay wa tawon koy cash.  ang orig owner for sentimental reasons would not also want to sell it to just anyone.  gusto gyod niya nga someone like me nga pareha niyag alma mater.  da, tua, nautangan hinoon.  duha man god iyang piano unya wa na kunoy makasunod sa usa.  mao nga iyang gi-let go.  but just now, i'm also very excited because it had always been my dream to have the sound of real piano keys wafting throughout the house.

Aaaah I always wanted to hear that word "wafting" in a song... mao diay nay iyang usage. I have to look for that poem with "waft" in it that I turn to music... ambot na YouTube na ba to, I know it was already recorded in the 90's (that time using a canned/sound Casio kayboard nga baratohon kaajo intawon hehehe)... will post it when found :D

other awardees together with my sister--- pilita corrales and pilar pilapil, hahaha!  i teased my sister about it... so you're in their league, eh?  kini ra silang duha akong nganlan kay mga pop culture personalities man, mas nailhan sa uban nga rarefied ang mga accomplishments, like that awardee who is an international pianist and concertist nga niabot nag tokar sa spain.

i must point out that pilita is a rare breed.  morag di graduate sa class of 1953, por santo wa pa man tingaliy natawo nato dinhi anang tuiga.  that makes her an octogenarian, aka diamond jubilarian.  por santo, ang iyang ka-batch nagtangag na ug private nurses, siya nag-miniskirt pa, energetic pa kaayong ni-perform.  she opened the program by regaling the crowd with 6 songs(!)--- english, tagalog, cebuano and spanish (she happens to be spanish-speaking too kay katsila man gyod tawon na siya).  whew!  she asked the crowd to sing along with her "usahay"; the crowd obliged.  wow!  what a real great singer, peformer, and trouper.  really, she's not pilita for nothing.

p.s. i knew only now that she beat olivia newton-john in an international contest sometime in the 1970s.

Karon hawod na ta pero kutob ra pod sa text votes ug magpa viral sa YouTube... but only to that extent. We are still dependent on a Helen Generes or sn Oprah or even a David Foster to get one "really" up there. 8)

true gyod, fr chic.  pero sige lang, at least pilita continued to regale us right here at home.  besides, gubot pa sa lukot iyang personal life at the peak of her singing career, mao tingali nga wa siya mo-bail out from our shores to make it worldwide with the imprimatur of u.s.cultural hegemony, hehe.

hehehe, teenage crush ra gyod tawon.  she's now 62 and is thus much older than you are. :)  like most middle-aged women, she's so bulky now, though her shape has remained.

i got this image from a friend's friend.  i saw pilar only when she was onstage to receive her outstanding alumna award for her work in the movies and television.

she hails from liloan, where she stays most of the time, though she goes to manila now and then for her tv soap role.

she has hewed closer to her faith.  after doy laurel (with whom she hooked up for some years), an italian guy (whom she married and divorced), she's now settled with a pastor.

only with what is apparent.  we all know that they've been wounded like the rest of us ordinary mortals.  i still feel that with the fragility-cum-strength of the human spirit, they must have spent sleepless nights sometime in their lives thinking that they could give up what they have and what they are in exchange for a more peaceful life.

today i realized that i've unwittingly made it a habit to look for my favorite national broadsheet columnists-- fr joaquin bernas, solita monsod, randy david, juan mercado of the philippine daily inquirer, and jarius bondoc of the philippine daily star.

despite his tiresome writing style, i get to read the inquirer's conrado de quiros too, if only for additional information about our country's current state of affairs.

ambeth ocampo is a good read for some historical perspective.  and i will always go for the inquirer's editorials, which i still regard as the most luminous editorial column of the land.  (i understand it's not just one but a group of writers who take turns at writing the paper's editorials.)

this goes without saying that i also read bohol and cebu local papers and some selected columns. :)

today i realized that i've unwittingly made it a habit to look for my favorite national broadsheet columnists-- fr joaquin bernas, solita monsod, randy david, juan mercado of the philippine daily inquirer, and jarius bondoc of the philippine daily star.

saw a lot of neuro cases last night. seeing pediatric patients with untreatable neurological pathologies is always heart breaking.

may God who is most merciful and fount of infinite graces, grant strength to their family.

spent my time traveling, helping my best friend (aka husband) at the office (hehe!) and reading all i could about the muslim mind (and opinions) after that paris tragedy.  i came across one of the best, written by abdelkader benali, printed at the international new york times.  i'm going to share it in some other thread here.

we truly need to reach out, first and foremost by not condemning the religion which, just like christianity, is a religion of peace.  we need to separate faith and rituals from the crime and the criminals.  in other words, we need to shed off some form of bigotry that we may hold, whether we admit it or not.
