Today, as I prepare for another day, I ponder on the words of Mother Teresa.

“Life is an opportunity, benefit from it.
Life is beauty, admire it.
Life is a dream, realize it.
Life is a challenge, meet it.
Life is a duty, complete it.
Life is a game, play it.
Life is a promise, fulfill it.
Life is sorrow, overcome it.
Life is a song, sing it.
Life is a struggle, accept it.
Life is a tragedy, confront it.
Life is an adventure, dare it.
Life is luck, make it.
Life is too precious, do not destroy it.
Life is life, fight for it.”

― Mother Teresa

This is what I'm listening to right now. Feeling really blessed and want to remind everyone here this:

When you're feeling surrounded, don't think you're by yourself. God is there with you. When you feel that everything is coming down on you, don't think you're all by yourself, the Good Lord who is Merciful WILL make a way for you. No matter what, The Good Lord WILL make a way for you....

May The Lord God Bless You All. In the Name of The Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Have a Blessed Day, Brothers and Sisters in Christ.

Enjoy this song, as well. Recognize the light in you. Show the light in you!

I had a long day today at work, was at work from 8 am, and didn't leave till 9:30 pm. I conducted an interview for a prospective psychology instructor to teach life span developmental psychology and cognitive psychology at the college. Tomorrow, I have to conduct two interviews for two physicians who are interested in being adjunct professors of anatomy & physiology and pharmacology. This evening, I had to stay in a bit later than usual to prepare the new syllabus and curriculum for 3 classes that we're planning to submit to the Illinois board of higher education -- they are kinesiology, human physiology, and muscular manipulation -- classes that are part of the physical therapy program. The deadline for this will be sometime by the end of march, haha. I am quite happy that my staff were able to stay in as late as 9:30 today. Na luoy ko nila that they had to stay in late with me, pero i was uplifted and enlighted when Ms. Elisa, my executive assistant, said to me, "Don't worry Dr. Lorenzo, we'll stay to help you so long as you need us to stay here". What dedication! I like that, really.

So at 8:00 PM, i treated them (4 of them stayed to help me) to Chinese take out. I ordered Lomein, Chicken fried rice, barbeque spare ribs, peking duck and veggetable stir fry.

The good thing: We finished rough draft of the curriculum and syllabi for said classes. Now, onwards to finishing and finalizing the draft this week.

The Lord has been very kind. And today marks a special day, today is the last day for His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI to sit on the throne of Peter in administering the Petrine ministry. I do pray for him, that he will be comforted by the Holy Spirit, and I thank God for sending us this most remarkable and awesome Pope. May God have mercy on our Pope.

Sincerely,
I remain,
Lorenzo

The skill of questioning in research

The skill of questioning in research

by: A. Lorenzo Lucino

One very important aspect of research is acquiring new data. Data that is acquired through medical research, philosophical research, psychological research, even historical research relies on questioning. In fact, the field of psychology, in particular, has developed new methods to acquire accurate data through the development of questionnaires that are administered through batteries.

In the field of psychology as well as in medicine, asking questions can be done through structured interview, unstructured interview or through questionnaires. The difference between structured interview from unstructured interview is that in structured interviews, the participants are asked specific, predetermined questions in a controlled manner. The most structured interview is when the interviewer simply reads closed-ended questions to participants and records their responses. In an unstructured interview, the researcher has a general idea of the open-ended questions that will be asked, but there is a form of freedom in the form of discussion between the interviewer and the interviewee (Heiman, 2001.)

Developing one’s questioning skills is important because one can better acquire answers through when interviewing respondents during empirical studies. Questioning can also be beneficial when reading empirical articles, working on research conclusions on one’s dissertation because one can gage one’s development. Questioning is an essential aspect of critical thinking and part of metacognition. By questioning a particular methodology, one see if statistical results support one’s hypothesis or if it will support the null hypothesis.

Good Morning,

At my office and working on a new set of battery questions, he he, kind of interesting how I am making these new questions along, but hopefully it might reveal some new data regarding students' perceptions of our departments' health methodology. Am really enjoying the day thus far , nag joke joke pod ko with my secretary, Olga, about the kissing and breath mints. Wow, she laughed so hard, nag bahakhak gajud. :P

Hoping and wishing everyone else has a wonderful, positive, and productive day!

How was battlefield 'work', Jenneth? ;D

As for me, just got back from my doctoral class. I had hospital duty today from 8am till 4 pm, then attended a doctoral class from 5:30 pm till 9:00 pm. 3 & 1/2 hours of listening to Dr. Nelson talk about qualitative research methods and some tips on creating question batteries when conducting a medical survey. Today is the last day of my class entitled, "Introduction to Doctoral Studies." Another Ph.D class done. Now, 20 more to go. :P

Ah, the life of a scholar-practitioner. Well, i will now focus on designing my forthcoming dissertation topic.

How is everything with you, Jenneth? And keep on posting , i like reading about your daily pursuits.

Sincerely,

This weekend, I was able to meet up with my very good friend Donald, a fellow collegiate at Allegheny during my undergrad days. It was enlightening to find out that he recently landed on a Financial Analyst position at a very large banking institution here in the Midwest. It was good to see him and to catch up ! Time passes too fast. There was a time when he and I were still 21 and 20, now, we are in our late 20's. :P

How am I doing? He he he, well, thanks for asking, Jenneth! I'm doing okay, thanks be to God. Am now currently designing the curricula for the Physical Therapy Assistant Program for the college & the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program , which I have to submit to the IBHE (Illinois Board of Higher Education) and the IDFPR (Illinois Department For Professional Regulation) by this coming summer. As the Director of the Allied Health & General Education Department, I am responsible for the smooth operation of the department, which includes pre-nursing & pre-medicine general educationl classes, basic nursing assistant program, pharmacy technology, basic & advanced ekg classes, the patient care technology program, the phlebotomy technology program, and clinical training for our allied health students at the college. As the head of over 27 instructors within my department, and of the some 800 students in our department, i'm on my toes most of the time when at work.

This past wednesday, we had our first departmental meeting in our main campus, this was the first departmental faculty meeting since my ascendancy as the Director of the General Education & Allied Health Department. I was introduced by the Dean of Academic Affairs , as well as the President of the College. It was fine, we discussed old business, and new business, mainly the issue of student-instructor assessments, tutoring programs, and the initialization of our college's first online class, which is currently being prepared by myself and some instructors that i have selected to help me in the creation of our first online class, our online medical terminology class. I'm pretty much excited, actually. A lot of paper work, ha ha ha!

Besides work, Jenneth, what can I say? I'm doing well. Maintaining a healthy and dynamic relationship with loved ones, friends, and dating on the side. But i must admit, i have not had the pleasure of dating due to the demands of my studies and my work. At this particular point of time in my life, I have opted to invest most of my time on my goals in finishing my Ph.D., and then applying for a research-clinical oriented medical residency. I dare to say that I want to graduate my doctoral program Summa Cum Laud this time around.

My life , at this particular point in time, is busy in academic research, and curricula development & working with my staff. 8)

How about you, Jenneth, what are some new personal, academic, and professional developments in your life?

Glory be to God! I got my grade for my last Ph.D class, my overall class average was 98%, a solid A. My final paper was okay, i need to work on the matrix procurement next time. Evaluation of literature could be better. Now am on my next class, which is Advanced Social Psychology, i like it thus far. The professor is an M.D-Ph.D also. A psychiatrist and licensed clinical psychologist. It's intriguing how we truly can merge psychiatry principles with experimental psychology. Empiricism at its best, baby. hehehe!

I like my new group of classmates as well. Its always humbling to be in a class filled with doctoral scholars. I've already befriended another Pinoy in my class, Ferdinand is his name. He is a Ph.D candidate, specializing in Strategic Management. He also is the President of a major hospital system in Chicago. Networking pod ko with him. he he he! ;D

Cheers to making new connections!

Just came back from 9:30 AM Palm Sunday Pass. I was the lector for the 1st reading today. Our celebrant was Fr. Daniel of St. Mary of the Lake Roman Catholic Church. Oh , it was such a beautiful mass. Got to talk to Mary, our coordinator, and Deacon Bill after mass ended.

God Bless us all!

Today - Palm Sunday - was very busy. 3 Masses on Sunday re-enacting Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, blessing of the palms and reading (role-playing) the Passion of Jesus Christ, a 7-minute homily on the first canonization in the history of our Church ("Amen, I say to you, today, you will be with me in paradise"). I had a quick lunch then off to a live station of the cross at one of our parishioner's wooded trail (pizza and coke at around 4pm) and then rehearsal for Holy Thursday and Easter Vigil at around 5pm in Church. Long day!

Just got back from studying, now preparing for another day of work tomorrow. It's always a challenge in trying to find that "balance" with work and reviews. I will not despair, for I know God will carry me through this. To God BE the Glory , Honor and Praise. He sustains me.

had the best way of the cross prayers in years.  it's a great feeling.  kanta-kanta pa kog latin songs at the end, morag korek.  sige lang, kami ra mang duha ni banana republic ang nag-pray.

It's good to experience it from time to time... a beautiful Catholic tradition

I went to the pilgrimage site with fellow friends Jenita, Patricia, and Cernan. We went to Holy Hill Roman Catholic Basilica in Wisconsin. Twas a beautiful and spiritual experience for me. All of us observed the Sacrament of Reconciliation , performed penance, and then took part in the Stations of the Cross with other pilgrims.

When I was there, I felt a deep and powerful spiritual awakening when we performed the stations of the cross. There were people of different ethnic origins. There were Indians singing and praying in their language, Mexicans, Bolivians, Argentinians, Colombians, Cubans, there were Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Polish, Germans, Italians, French, Filipinos all praying in their individual languages. Many tongues, yet worshiping the same One Lord Jesus Christ.

During the way, a family joined us and they had a baby who was in a stroller. My friend Cernan and I helped the mother to carry the little baby's stroller as we went up the inclined stairs throughout the mountainside that we had to go throuh during the Vaya Cruz. We developed a friendship with the mother and daughter, adorable baby girl. Her name was Mackenzie.

On the way to the 8th station of the Cross, i was surprised to hear a voice call out, "Doctor Lucino!" Na kuyawan ko. It was one of my former patients, si Rex, a Filipino who was hospitalized for MI several months ago. He was with his family (taga Cebu ni siya). He came up to me, as i did to him, and embraced me. I was so happy to see him, in good health and with a smile on his face. God is Good! He is so Good!

May God Bless us this Easter Sunday. May God shine forth his Blessings on all of us. May God Bless you all, everyone one.

have a blessed trip, lorenz.

It was a deeply spiritual experience for me, Isles. One of the most memorable spiritual retreats thus far. And I pray you have a most blessed, and grace-filled Easter Sunday. May God's choicest blessings be showered unto you and your entire family. In the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Just got back home from a 2 mile jog around the lake trail. Taking time to relax by jogging / walking. Despite the cold weather, i found the chill of the wind refreshing, the long jog allowed me to think and ponder on the upcoming challenges / responsibilities that are coming up. As I look forward to tackling them head on, I find solace in knowing that there is respite in exercising, which does good for the body.

Carpe Diem!

My new room mate, Robert, will be moving in with me at my new apartment this week. It will be good having a pharmacist as a room mate. Who knows, maybe i might get to learn something new about drug interaction , drug side effects and drug indications with this new guy. Might learn something new. ;D

I have applied for an observer-ship position at Northwestern Hospital in downtown Chicago in their Department of Surgery. This is a summer-based observer-ship and I want to avail of the new surgical methods taught. I'm a bit concerned due to the competition for this, nonetheless, I'm going to tender my application this week. I'm hoping I get it.
