This week was definitely filled with a lot of difficult circumstances, trying times with patients as well as with the beauty of the work place. It is a mix of feelings , a mixed environment, really. Balancing the time in being a Medical Intern and also being a Clinical Instructor keeps me on my toes. Yet, despite it all, despite the responsibilities, I love it. The feeling of satisfaction in seeing nursing students "understand" a concept. The sound of their voices reiterating, " Oh Now I get It!" , it truly is priceless.

A physician is not only one who treats, but a physician also teaches, educates, and in doing so better ascertains his own footing and understanding. To teach is to learn. To instruct is to gain wisdom. Truly.

In austerity,
Lorenzo

March 16, 2012,

Dearest Friends,

I was really touched today. After finishing my hospital rounds, I went to Northwestern's Campus to finish reporting grades at the Department of Nursing & Allied Health. I was really touched because one of the secretaries came up to me and said, "Dr. Lucino, your students wanted you to have this card. They really are going to miss you!"

The class that I was teaching was Medical Terminology, which is a prerequisite for Nursing Students. The class ended on March 14, 2012 and I had developed a fond relationship with many of my students. Many of whom were twice my own age. lol.

I was really touched and deeply inspired by their card for me. I could not help but cry.

Mo share ko ani diri:

 :)

Truly,

The greatest reward is in knowing you made a difference in someone's educational and professional career. I am so proud of my Nursing Students. I know they will be GREAT nurses someday. :)

Had a good work schedule today at the hospital. I talked with my good friend Dr. Villa about doing an observancy with a local hospital we both know about. Anyways, Dr. Villa is a good guy as we were both able to talk and bond today. He is an M.D who graduated from Western Visayas State University College of Medicine in Iloilo City.

We are also both instructing the Nursing Entrance Exams at Northwestern. Both of us attended the conference today with ATI representatives, it was productive. The Director of Allied Health Department, a Tagalog, said to us, "Oh! We have Bisayans taking control of the entrance exams. One is a doctor from Iloilo and the other a doctor from Bohol" hehe :)

That's good. Father R, eat a lot of green veggies. Eat a lot of lettuce, broccoli, asparagus, zuccini (you can boil them), don't add any salt or anything just eat it as is. If you eat a healthy amount of green veggies every day and drink water , you can substantially decrease your triglyceride levels.

A good way to reduce triglyceride levels, besides medicine, is eating a good amount of Green Leafy Vegetables.

You are taking you Omega 3,6 Fatty Acids , right? If you are not, you need to start taking that because it is Cardio-Protective. If you are taking it then, good, keep on taking it religiously.

Today I got a phone call from a former student in my Pharmacy Technology Class, which I had taught in September 2011. This student called to tell me that he had passed his Pharmacy Technician Board Exam. Now he is an official CPhT (Certified Pharmacy Technologist). This person was a delivery driver before going to college for Pharmacy Technology. I was really touched by his life experiences and the difficulties he had to go through.

With education, one's possibilities become limitless. I am so proud of him. He said to me, "I could not have done it with out your teaching, Doctor." I had said to him in reply, "No, it was all about you, Aslam! See how successful you can be if you APPLY yourself!"

God Bless him.

Okay, you are taking Lovastatin, that is a HMG COA-Inhibitor. That is given to lower your cholesterol level; it reduces your LDL (bad cholesterol) and can elevate your HDL (good cholesterol). It has some ability to reduce your Triglycerides, pero not so good. I HIGHLY recommend, in fact, I ENDORSE that you eat A LOT of green veggies from now on, Father R. Eat a lot of lettuce, a lot of broccoli, a lot of zuccini, a lot of bachoy, etc etc every day na gajud.

Trust me, in one month, go check your TRIGS and it will be reduced. :)

For you, anything.

you're sure about bachoy, lorenz?  could it be that you meant pechay?  or is there a vegetable called bachoy?  the batchoy i know is an ilonggo dish, the best there is i must say.  its main ingredient of course is noodles, but its charm is in its soup.

in that one batchoy place (near the capitol of cebu) i used to frequent as a young working girl, i learned that they simmer beef, chicken and pork bones continuously in a big vat, 24 hours a day.  meats, entrails, crushed chicharon, raw egg, fried garlic and a variety of condiments top off the noodles cooked in the bowl only by the simmering soup that they ladle from the vat.  whatever veggies there were, these were usually slivers of cabbage, spring onions and mint, which add color and esthetics aside from their hint of flavor.

since all the main ingredients were clipped with kitchen scissors directly to the bowl, our joke then was their batchoy is so good because it includes the chef's fingernails.

heaven is a la paz batchoy

in that one batchoy place (near the capitol of cebu) i used to frequent as a young working girl, i learned that they simmer beef, chicken and pork bones continuously in a big vat, 24 hours a day.  meats, entrails, crushed chicharon, raw egg, fried garlic and a variety of condiments top off the noodles cooked in the bowl only by the simmering soup that they ladle from the vat.  whatever veggies there were, these were usually slivers of cabbage, spring onions and mint, which add color and esthetics aside from their hint of flavor.

since all the main ingredients were clipped with kitchen scissors directly to the bowl, our joke then was their batchoy is so good because it includes the chef's fingernails.

heaven is a la paz batchoy

hehehe kahibalo mo luto ahong nobya ani, isles. she cooks it the way they make it in Santa Barbara, Iloillo City.
Nami kaayo GID ! ;D

i'm still a zombie.  i'll take muscle relaxant only if this doesn't improve after 10 hours (my own pain threshold time limit, hahaha!)

Luoy pod tawn...asa man ang sakit, isles, sa both sides sa liog?

Boil hot water, dip a towel and wrap that around your neck, the warm towel will help dilate the artery and veins in around your neck and help alleviate the contracted muscles. Massaging it should alleviate some pain, dear. Hope you feel better.

How has your sleeping been?

thanks.  will do that before sleeping.

i have resorted to alaxan (ibuprofen paracetamol) hours ago because the pain is rendering my left arm almost immobile (sometimes, i tackle the computer keys with only one hand; touch system for the keys is useless now).  it helped a bit.  this over-the-counter medicine scares me.  i know someone who has lupus because of this, or so she claims.  so i'm very spare about taking this.

as for sleeping, it's not so good.  the doctor had prescribed sleepasil.  she said it's no longer that easy to prescribe stillnox here because they need a special license for such medicines, and most of the licensed ones are psychiatrists.  it looks like sleepasil doesn't help much, especially if i'm agitated.

I hope that you were able to get some recuperative sleep, isles. Kanang warning sa imong amigo, it is very correct. There are alot of drugs that can cause Drug-Induced Lupus. So long as you don't take it chronically. In fact the drugs that can cause drug-induced lupus are HIPP (Hydralazine, Isoniazide, Phenytoin, Procainamide)

Septrin, ibuprofen, sulfa drugs, don't cause drug-induced lupus as such, but they can exacerbate true underlying lupus, & cause lupus flares. Ibuprofen Paracetamol will not cause lupus, but has the ability to exacerbate an underlying lupus. Your friend had a dormant or minor form of SLE (systemic lupus erythematosus), which did not flare up until your friend started to abuse the Ibuprofen Paracetamol.

Hope you feel better, dear. Try switching body positions if you can't sleep.

Isles, in the hospital, when it is my turn to "sleep" during on-call hours, i try to switch around on the sofa chair. 2 hours on one side, then 2 hours on the other. Luoy pod kai we are only allowed 4 hour sleep during our 36 hour on-calls. :(
