Floyd Mayweather stands accused of eight criminal counts today, four of them felonies, and Manny Pacquiao suddenly isn't his most important potential fight anymore, not with a real fight for his freedom at hand.

A court date is scheduled Nov. 9 and if prosecutors have enough of a case to make even one of the felony charges stick, Mayweather will spend a minimum of one year in a Nevada state prison.

If the authorities really nail the champion boxer -- and given the depth of the charges, that seems the clear initial intent in the state where O.J. Simpson is serving nine to 33 years for armed robbery, conspiracy and kidnapping -- the maximum penalty for a felony robbery conviction is 15 years.

Boxer Floyd "Money" Mayweather, Jr (41-0) is receiving additional charges from the Clark County District Attorney's (DA) office in Las Vegas, Nevada in connection with last week's domestic violence incident with Josie Harris, mother of Mayweather's children.

The troubled boxer now faces seven charges including three felony counts of grand larceny, robbery, and coercion.  Additionally, four misdemeanors include battery and three counts of harrasment, according to the local DA.  If convicted on all charges, Mayweather faces up to 28 years in Nevada prison.

Mayweather allegedly threatened to kill both Josie Harris and her supposed boyfriend, Chicago Bulls guard C.J. Watson.  (Watson denies the relationship.)  The boxer also faces charges that he threatened his sons not to call the police and not to leave the boxer's Las Vegas mansion, where the incident took place.

Harris, who alleges that the boxer took her iPhone, was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries.

The previous week, Mayweather made a racist and homophobic online video aimed at his rival, Filipino boxer Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao (51-3-2).  Filipino-American groups around the United States and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) condemned the American boxer's tirade. - examiner.com - Marv Dumon

A man has shot a doctor at a hospital in the US city of Baltimore, before shooting his ailing mother dead in her bed and killing himself, police said.

Police at Johns Hopkins hospital said the gunman had shot the doctor once in the chest after becoming distraught at news about his mother's condition.

The doctor was said to be recovering from a non-life threatening wound.

Police discovered the two dead bodies after a stand-off. They identified the gunman as Warren Davis, 50.

Baltimore police commissioner Frederick Bealefeld said that at about 1100 local time (1500 GMT), Mr Davis was standing outside his mother's hospital room being briefed by the doctor.

He became "overwhelmed by the news of his mother's condition", then pulled from his waist a small semi-automatic handgun and fired a single shot, striking the doctor in the lower chest, Mr Bealefeld said.

The man then barricaded himself in his mother's room, Mr Bealefeld said. Heavily armed police offers arrived at the scene and took positions surrounding the room. - BBC

Our Daily Bread

Growing up around the woods and waters of Midwest America, I’ve been fascinated with natural wildlife native to our region. But on a recent trip to the California coast, I found myself staring in breathtaking wonder at snorting elephant seals, barking sea lions, and a forest of silent redwoods. I watched pelicans soar in formation, and I saw migrating whales spouting in the distance. Together they are just a sampling of the millions of species that make up the intricate and delicate balance of nature.

According to the Bible, the variety of the natural world is designed to do far more than inspire childlike wonder. The mysteries of nature can help us come to terms with a God who allows inexpressible, unexplainable pain and suffering.

We see this in the epic story of Job. While he was suffering, Job didn’t know that God had such a high regard for him that he allowed Satan to test his faith with a series of losses.

What emerges is this eventual, unavoidable conclusion: A Creator who has the wisdom and power to design the wonders of nature is great enough to be trusted with pain and suffering that are beyond our ability to understand. In awe, Job proclaimed, “I know that You can do everything” (42:2). We can trust that kind of Godâ€"no matter what.

Inspiration & Hope / Certificate of Authenticity
September 17, 2010, 08:58:06 AM
by Dave Branon, Our Daily Bread

One of the coolest things hanging on the wall in my home office is a Certificate of Authenticity.

It has on it the logo of US Space Shuttle flight 110, which was launched in April 2002. Aboard the Atlantis on that flight was Mission Specialist Rex Walheim, who took into outer space an article from Our Daily Bread titled “Seeing God’s Glory.” Lt. Col. Walheim sent me the certificate to prove that this devotional page actually left earth’s atmosphere.

Sometimes we need these kinds of thingsâ€"documents that verify truth. If I were to show that article to someone and say, “This flew on the Space Shuttle,” I could be doubted because I would have no proof. But when Walheim sent me the Certificate of Authenticity, he gave me verification.

In 1 Peter, Simon Peter created a Certificate of Authenticity for his message about the grace of God. In chapter 5, he wrote, “I have written to you briefly, exhorting and testifying that this [letter] is the true grace of God” (v.12). Peter was assuring his readers that the many messages of 1 Peterâ€"themes of hope and courage and even sufferingâ€"were all authentic and demonstrate the grace of God.

Looking for evidence of God’s grace? Read 1 Peter, and be confident that its teaching is the real deal.

PRICES of school supplies in Bacolod City and Negros Occidental are now being closely monitored for the possible overpricing scheme by some establishments.

Department of Trade and Industry director Rebecca Racson told Sun.Star-Bacolod that the monitoring of prices has started last month of April.

Among the brands which the DTI is monitoring include Best Buy, Advance, Yasaka, Paperline, Merit, NBS Basics, Centurian, Top Line, and Veco.

Of these brands, she said would vary in prices on notebooks be it spiral, writing or composition type, for use of elementary level from grade 1 to 4. All must be in 80 to 90 leaves, she said, adding that the quality of the paper should be bond or econo-bond. Also included in their monitoring are the crayons and pencils.

She advised buyers to look for the brands with their respective reference price.

GLOBAL Placement Services Inc. said it is merely an agency that facilitates visa applications to the United Kingdom and not a recruiter that asked applicants to pay a huge amount of money in exchange of lucrative jobs.

These were sentiments aired by the contending parties during the first joint hearing Monday of the City Council committees on labor and management and overseas workers chaired by Councilor Sonya Verdeflor and the committee on human rights chaired by Councilor Archie Baribar.

Councilors Verdeflor and Baribar were joined by Councilors Elmer Sy, El Cid Familiaran, Catalino Alisbo and Em Ang.

The complainants, led by Maritess Manayon, presented their complaints on how Global Placement offered them a "too good to be true" opportunity of a greener pasture in London.

Global Placement was represented by its legal counsel, lawyer Andy Hagad, and its public relations consultant, Gil Severino.

Councilor Caesar Distrito at first joined the committees conducting the joint hearing, but Councilor Baribar requested him to desist from sitting as a member of the panel considering that Distrito was named by the complainants as having allegedly served as legal counsel for Global Placement.

NEGROS Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. foresees a "good price" of sugar for both producers and consumers this coming crop year, which is traditionally set to open on September 1.

Marañon said he based his forecast on the prevailing sugar supply and demand situation.

Based on reports, raw sugar prices might average at no less than P2,000 per 50 kilos during the opening of the milling season.

Last June, records from the Sugar Regulatory Administration showed that raw sugar was already sold at an average of P1,930 per bag at the mills, while the wholesale prices of raw sugar during that time already exceeded P2,000 per bag.

The governor said the start of the milling season would be delayed this crop coming crop year due to the stunted growth of the canes that were severely affected by the El Niño weather phenomenon.

However, Marañon said several mills have already announced that they will start milling by October. Among these are the traditional early starters, such as the Victorias Milling Company in Victorias City and Lopez Sugar Corporation in Sagay City. - Sun Star

Philippine Provinces / May Pera sa Basura
September 16, 2010, 02:48:17 PM
THE government and many non-government organizations have adopted the slogan “May Pera sa Basura” in the thick of saving the environment.

The battle cry combines two goals- livelihood by making money out of garbage and encouraging proper waste management.

Many useful environment products were born out of the catchword. Sagay City is one proud local government unit in the Negros Occidental province to have created “Basuling” that literally means “Uling Galing sa Basura” or charcoal made from garbage.

Rizza Palacios, a Solid Waste Management staff of Sagay explained to PIA how the item is made.

First, market and garden wastes are gathered and shredded to small bits. Then, it is left to decompose for two to three weeks. Within that period, the matter will thoroughly melt and the foul smell fades. Using bare hands, the substance is then molded into a rounded mass and dried under the sun for one week of good sunlight. It will be more than that on cooler days. - Sun Star

THE Board of Investments (BOI), an attached agency of the Department of Trade and Industry, will be holding the 2010 Investments Priorities Plan (IPP) on September 3, 2010 at La Proa Ballroom, L'Fisher Hotel, Bacolod City.

The 2010 IPP is set to reveal the approved investment priority areas by which the government seeks to grant tax and fiscal incentives to such investments that would take advantage of the expected global and domestic economic rebound.

Dubbed as "More Investments, More Jobs", the 2010 IPP will take four approaches in order to attract investments into the country, which include approaches such as aggressive investment promotion both for inbound and outbound missions; focus on sectors that can take advantage of the economic rebound; promotion of green projects; and support for small and medium enterprises. The export sector is also expected to receive strong support under the IPP. The same is also expected of the services sector especially those involved in business process outsourcing (BPO) industries.

Philippine Provinces / Silay City Airport Survival Guide

ONLY public transport vehicles that have secured business permits from the Silay City Government and a franchise with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) are allowed to pick up passengers from the airport to any point in the province.

Silay City Administrator Ignacio Salmingo made the clarification amid complaints of some public transport vehicle drivers and operators that they are not allowed to pick up passengers from the airport, thereby causing them losses in terms of fuel and income opportunity as they had to return to their places of origin without any passenger.

The business permit payment is very minimal at P200 per unit for taxi and P500 per unit, for the vans, said Salmingo. He assured the operators that the city will not hesitate granting them the business permits, as long as the applicants have the LTFRB franchise from the New Bacolod-Silay airport to any destination within the province.

As to the parking fee being charged to private vehicles at the airport parking lots, Salmingo said the City Government has nothing to do about it and the contract is between a private company collecting the fees and the airport management alone.

Salmingo also denied issues that only Faith Taxis are allowed to pick up passengers at the airport.

IF THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has three suspects in the killing of British businessman Anthony Nicholas, the Task Force Nicholas (TFN) has three to four.

TFN was formed by the Negros Occidental Provincial Police Office.

Negros Occidental Police Office (Noppo) Director Manuel Felix who heads the task force said they had invited some individuals for questioning at the Sipalay Police station.

Based on the investigation, the police have come up with three to four suspects, two of whom are still in the province but are no longer in Sipalay City.

The task force is thoroughly investigating the motive of the crime and it does not discount robbery, land conflict, and personal grudge angles among the motives of the crime, said Felix.

He further said the caliber .38 revolver recovered from the position of Claro Barcoma was already subjected for ballistic examinations and they are still waiting for the results.

Barcoma was also questioned by authorities about his possible participation to the crime. He is still detained at the Sipalay Police jail after he was charged for illegal possession of firearms.

A certain "Nonoy" was also invited for questioning, said Felix. (Teresa Ellera-Dulla)

Philippine Provinces / Number Game Called Basketball38
September 16, 2010, 02:40:30 PM
By Sun Star

ASIDE from jai alai, another numbers game called "Basketball38" is now rampant in Negros Occidental, said former Manapla Mayor Manuel Escalante.

Escalante said "Baskteball38" has a betting pattern almost similar to the Small Town Lottery (STL). It conducts a draw three times a day: 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. It also has two winning number combinations out of the 38 numbers up for betting and the bettors are provided with betting slip.

Escalante said "Basketball 38" has a betting station in Silay City and is applying a business permit for its betting stations in some other towns and cities in the province.

Escalante also said betting for Bastkeball38, which carries the name of the Philippine Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) on its betting slips and betting stations, is not supervised by Pagcor.

In a video uploaded in TubeTube, Basketball38 entices bettors that their P10 bet could make them an instant millionaire.

Basketball38 is reportedly run by PhilWeb Corp, the lead technology enabler of state-run Pagcor, whose core businesses include e-games cafes, Internet sports betting stations, mobile phone gaming, and online casino gaming.

THE groundbreaking for the construction of the flyover in Bacolod City is on October 7, 2010, said Bacolod City lone district Representative Anthony Golez.

However, the construction may face delays because of the staging of the yearly MassKara festival which will cover almost the entire month of October.

"We don't want to create traffic jams while the city is holding the MassKara festival. The public's convenience is our primary consideration," he said.

Golez hopes that President Benigno Aquino III will grace the ground breaking rites as it is a project under the President's Bridge Program.

Department of Public works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Emil Sadain assured Golez that after the ground-breaking the construction of the project will proceed.

Golez also stressed that this project can no longer be diverted to other projects. "We only have two options to this project which are to accept it or give it to other local government units which also need it."

Other sectors, especially the Negrenses for Noynoy Movement (N4NM), expressed their opposition to the project, alleging that the city does not need a flyover over to address the traffic congestion.

Sun Star - THE suggested reference price (SRP) of refined sugar will be retained at P52 per kilo, said the decision of the National Price Coordinating Council (NPCC).

The NPCC is chaired by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) earlier has recommended a P56 per kilo SRP of refined sugar, following the complaints of retailers in public markets and grocery owners who could no longer sell refined sugar at the SRP level of P52 per kilo.

SRA’s recommended SRP was based on the last bidded price of sugar at millsite and the prevailing wholesale prices from June to August.

Retailers said the wholesale price has gone up and is no longer profitable for them to sell sugar at the current SRP level.

SRA admitted that the spike in the domestic price of sugar was influenced by the trend of increasing sugar prices in the global market as well as the lean sugar supply in the domestic market brought by El Niño, which affected the harvest of the past crop year and the delayed milling season in the current crop year.

SRA, in coordination with the National Food Authority, implemented the importation of sugar using the tax expenditure subsidy of NFA so that sugar will come in at a price lower than the dutyâ€"paid importation, which will reach as high as P 70.00 per kilo of refined sugar.

Out of the 250,000 metric tons total importation, 217,814 metric tons has arrived as of September 8. The importation hopefully could fill-in the supply gap during the lean months.

Philippine Provinces / Illegal Jai Alai in Bacolod City
September 16, 2010, 02:21:52 PM
MAYOR Evelio Leonardia is pestered with Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) Director Celestino Guara's handling of the illegal operation of jai alai in the city.

The mayor has received reports about Guara knowing the eight jai alai operators in the city. "But why did he not take the steps to apprehend them? What is he doing about them now that he is aware of their existence in the city?"

Leonardia reiterated that jai alai does not have a place in Bacolod and he wants the police to beef up campaigns against jai alai operators, bet collectors and bettors.

Guara disclosed Monday that there are eight illegal jai alai operators in the city, operating in the barangays Dalisay, Speed, La Cesta, Buenas, Fronton, Neo Grande, and two others.

Earlier, City Councilor El Cid Familiaran, City Council chairman of the committee on police, security and jail management, proposed a resolution to request the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to help the operation against jueting, jai alai, masiao, daily double, and all illegal gambling operators and financiers who operate in the city. - Sun Star

THE BUREAU of Internal Revenue has issued guidelines that relieve delinquent taxpayers of surcharges or compromise penalties on either failing to file tax returns or having filed ones that do not reflect appropriate amounts.

This means that taxpayers who avail of the so-called abatement program are spared from paying an additional 25 percent of the tax they still owe the government or any penalty that the BIR offers to those who settle their obligations by means of compromise.

However, under Revenue Regulations No. 9-2010 dated Sept. 13, taxpayers who choose to amend their tax returns still have to shell out the amount they avoided paying, plus 20 percent interest.

Internal Revenue Commissioner Kim Henares said many such taxpayers have recently expressed willingness to voluntarily file and pay taxes or “rectify” the returns that have been filed previously.

Henares said these taxpayers were also willing to pay tax deficiencies, although they did request for an abatement of the penalties.

THE GLOBAL semiconductor industry expects investments to continue to pour in the remaining months of the year, with capital equipment spending seen reaching $36.9 billion, more than double last year’s $16.6 billion.

According to international research firm Gartner Inc., growth from this year to next would be a modest 4.9 percent, but only because 2010’s expected spending growth would drive capital equipment spending to an all-time high.

Also, 2009 was considered a slump year by the industry, with most players opting to make do with their existing equipment, as semiconductor demand significantly slowed amid the global recession.

Gartner said overall semiconductor capital expenditures would likewise double this year to $50.7 billion, from the $25.9 billion recorded last year.

REMITTANCES ROSE anew in July as recovery of the global economy stirred up demand for more Filipino workers abroad, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas reported Wednesday.

The BSP said the money sent in by Filipinos abroad amounted to $1.62 billion in July, rising by 8.2 percent from only $1.49 billion in the same month last year.

This brought the cumulative amount of remittances in the first eight months of the year to $10.68 billionâ€"up 7.1 percent from $9.97 billion in the same period a year ago.

“Underpinning mainly the resilience of remittances is the continued demand for Filipino manpower worldwide as global employment prospects remained favorable,” BSP Governor Amando Tetangco Jr. said in a statement.

Tetangco said that given the encouraging inflow in July, the central bank could expect remittances to continue to grow throughout the rest of the year.

Earlier, the BSP said it projected remittances to grow between 6 and 8 percent for the full year from last year’s $17.35 billion.

Late pop icon Michael Jackson's mother has filed suit against promoters of a concert series he was supposed to give in London in 2009, claiming they shared the blame for his death during rehearsals.

Katherine Jackson filed the suit in Los Angeles Superior Court in her name and those of the singer's three children. The suit is for an unspecified amount in damages.

She charged that the AEG group did not give her son appropriate medical care during rehearsals for the shows, and alleged negligence in allowing Dr. Conrad Murray to care exclusively for her son.

A Los Angeles judge has set a January 2011 hearing to weigh whether there is sufficient evidence to prosecute Murray for involuntary manslaughter over the singer's death.

The 57-year-old doctor, who was with Jackson when he died June 25, 2009, was charged with involuntary manslaughter in February this year, but is free on a $75,000 bond.

Officials have ruled that Jackson died after being injected with a powerful cocktail of sedatives and painkillers, including propofol, which the singer regularly requested from Murray to help him sleep.

A former Cabinet secretary of then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and two others received P10 million each early this year from one of the suspects in the massacre in Maguindanao, a witness told the local court Wednesday.

Lakmudin Saliao, house help for 18 years of Andal Ampatuan Sr., testified in Filipino that last march 11 he was instructed by the former governor to give the money to former press secretary Jess Dureza “in exchange for his freedom from rebellion.”

Aside from murder following the deaths of 57 people in Maguindanao last Nov. 23, 2009, Ampatuan Sr. was also charged with rebellion after he and some members of his family allegedly tried to usurp the authority of the government that was then investigating the carnage in the province where the clan wielded influence.

Saliao also testified before the local court in Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig that then Maguindanao chief of police Sukarno Dicay and one Erin Ebus also received P10 million each for recanting on their testimonies against the Ampatuans.

Mike Magtimbang, a board member of the Maguindanao provincial council, received P20 million for taking care of Ampatuan Sr. in Camp Anakan in Eastern Mindanao where he was initially detained following his arrest, Saliao said.

Saliao said that the Ampatuan patriarch also instructed him to give P200-million to Datu Umbra Sinsuat, Esmael Mangudadatu's closest rival in the Maguindanao gubernatorial race last May.

He added that a certain prosecutor from Davao Thaddeus Sayson received P5,000 "per signature." However, he said he was not aware of the transaction between Ampatuan Sr. and the prosecutor though he knew that the patriarch gave Sayson the money every time he was being asked to sign something.

On the other hand, Saliao said the money for Ebus was taken by four agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) stationed in Davao to Manila where Ebus was staying.

Quoting Ampatuan Sr. Saliao said, “Ito na ba ang maghahatid ng pera sa Manila para kay Ebus [Is he the one who will bring the money for Ebus]?...Very good, alis na kayo bukas [leave tomorrow].”

Saliao added that even lawyers of the Ampatuans â€" Philip Pantojan, Cynthia Guiani-Sayadi and Sigfrid Fortun â€" who visited Ampatuan Sr. at the Davao hospital told them not to tell the truth.

“Tama ba si Zaldy [former ARMM governor Zaldy Ampatuan] na isisi na lang kay Jr. [Andal Ampatuan Jr.] ang massacre [Is it right for Zaldy to blame Jr.],” said Saliao, quoting Ampatuan Sr. while talking to Fortun.

“’Wag kayong umamin. Kami nang mga abogado ang bahala...Sinabi ko po kay Zaldy na wag kayong aamin [Don’t admit to anything. We the lawyers will take care of things… I told Zaldy not to admit anything],” Saliao said, quoting Fortun. Saliao was the companion of Ampatuan Sr. at the Davao hospital.

Fortun, however, denied the allegation. “How can I advise Zaldy? I cannot (because) I do not represent him.” Fortun is the counsel of Andal Ampatuan Jr.

Saliao also revealed that Ampatuan Sr. was not really sick. He said the head doctor of Maguindanao, Dr. Tahil Sulahig provided the ambulance and oxygen tank for their trip from Sharif Aguak to Davao hospital on Dec. 4, 2009.

“Nagusap sila na dalhin si Ampatuan Sr. sa Cotabato para magkunwaring maysakit...Sa loob ng ambulansya, ako po ang naglalagay ng (oxygen) mask tuwing dumadating kami sa mga check point para magkunwaring malubha sya [They talked and agreed to bring Ampatuan Sr.in Cotabato and pretend to be sick . . . Inside the ambulance, I am the one who puts the oxygen mask everytime we pass through a checkpoint to pretend that he’s really sick],” Saliao said.

Saliao only escaped the Ampatuans after he learned from one of the granddaughters that there was a plan to kill him because he knew so much.

Saliao said the last instruction given to him was to lure Pantojan to meet with him where a killer was waiting and the lawyer’s death would be pinned on Mangudadatu.

He was supposed to meet Pantojan at the Gaisano Mall “pero hindi ko na po sya sinipot dahil nakunsensya na po ako [but I did not meet him anymore because my conscience was bothering me].”

Saliao said a military officer helped him escape and was taken to the Department of Justice (DoJ).

Technology / Free Download Beta Internet Explorer 9 (IE9)
September 16, 2010, 11:56:27 AM
Microsoft has launched its latest bid to be computer users' default window on to the web.

The software giant has released the latest version of its popular web browser, Internet Explorer 9 (IE9), which it will help revive its fortunes in an increasingly competitive market.

Since 2003 the company has seen a 97% lead dwindle to 60% today.

It will compete with new versions of other popular browsers such as Mozilla's Firefox and Google's Chrome.

Google Chrome now commands more than 7.5% of the market despite only being released in December 2008.

Mozilla, which has recently launched a test version of Firefox 4, has nearly a quarter of the market and in some countries is the dominant web browser.

Many browsers received a boost when the European Commission forced Microsoft to offer users of its Windows operating system a choice of browser, rather than internet Explorer as a default.

Legally Separated Married Pinay Cannot Change Her Name
case: Laperal v. Republic
GR No. L-18008, October 30, 1962

Facts: Elisa L. Santamaria, legally separated from her husband Enrique R. Santamaria, petitioned for a change of name to Elisa Laperal, her maiden name, under Rule 103 of the Rules of Court (for change of name) on the ground that she was already legally separated from her husband, and that they had for many years now ceased to live together, and that the continued use of her husband's surname may cause undue confusion in her finances and the eventual liquidation of the conjugal assets.

Supreme Court Decision: The change of name cannot be granted. Firstly, the Rules of Court on change of name in general cannot prevail over the specific provisions of Article 372 (Civil Code of the Philippines) which specifically deals with wives who are legally separated. Secondly, even under Rule 103, the fact of legal separation alone does NOT justify a change of name, otherwise Article 372 can easily be circumvented. Thirdly, the decree of legal separation had already dissolved the conjugal partnership which previously existed.

Article 372: When the legal separation has been granted, the wife shall continue using her name and surname employed before legal separation.

Proper Surnames for a Married Woman in the Philippines

Example: Josefa Reyes married Renato Cruz. Josefa may use any of the following names:

a. Josefa Reyes Cruz
b. Josefa Cruz
c. Mrs. Renato Cruz

Note: She cannot use Mrs. Josefa Cruz for this would be illegal and ungrammatical, the term "Mrs." being the abbreviation of "Mistress." While she is the mistress of Renato, she is NOT the mistress of Josefa. However, if she wants to, she may still use Mrs. Josefa Cruz provided that "Mrs." is enclosed in parenthesis. She would then be using the form in Article 370 (No. 2) of the Civil Code of the Philippines and the term "Mrs." which should be enclosed would be merely descriptive of her marital status.

Most people shrieked away from wanting to learn and make a living out of forex trading. The main fear factor would be it is too complicated and involved a long list of financial jargon that can blow away a novice like us. Forex trading is not something that easy to learn, but it’s not impossible if with passion.

Health and Food / Benefits of Aerobic Exercise
September 15, 2010, 03:34:52 PM
Aerobic exercise provides the dual benefits of working large muscle groups, while simultaneously elevating the heart rate for an extended amount of time. These exercises are particularly helpful in keeping your heart in good shape. Healthy exercise will burn fat without the bulky muscle gain of weight-based exercise programs. Experts recommend that aerobic exercise is most effective if practiced between 3 to 6 days a week for between 30 and 60 minutes at a time.

A reverse mortgage is a specialized home loan that allows the home owner to exchange a bit of the equity in their house into hard cash. However unlike a conventional home equity loan or even a second mortgage, there are no repayments to make until the borrower stops using the home as their primary place of residence.

Some suggest exercise increases the release of endorphins and other "feel good" hormones that have a similar uplifting effect to prescription antidepressants. Business and Economy / Define two-step mortgage
September 15, 2010, 03:23:07 PM
A two-step mortgage, like its name implies has two different parts to it. Often called a hybrid loan, it combines some of the features of both types into a typical 30-year mortgage. The first part of the mortgage, which is usually either 5 or 7 years, has a fixed rate so that the interest and payment stay the same. This part of the loan is typically lower than the market value giving the buyer some savings during this time. - read more at http://www.getthebestinfo.com/Article/What-Is-A-Two-Step-Mortgage-/53247

Health and Food / Benefits of Oats
September 15, 2010, 01:41:25 PM
The benefits of oatmeal are due to the fact that it's made from oats and oats are a good source of both soluble and insoluble fiber.

According to the American Cancer Society:

1. Insoluble fiber's cancer-fighting properties are due to the fact that it attacks certain bile acids, reducing their toxicity.

2. Soluble fiber may reduce LDL cholesterol without lowering HDL cholesterol. LDL is bad; HDL is good.

3. Soluble fiber slows down the digestion of starch. This may be beneficial to diabetics because, when you slow down the digestion of starch, you avoid the sharp rises in your blood sugar level that usually occur following a meal.

4. It has been found that those who eat more oats are less likely to develop heart disease, a disease that is currently widespread in the United States.

5. The phytochemicals in oat may also have cancer-fighting properties.

6. Oats are a good source of many nutrients including vitamin E, zinc, selenium, copper, iron, manganese and magnesium. Oats are also a good source of protein.

Russian revolutionary Vladimir Ilyich Lenin spoke of communists as “dead men on furlough.” Those dedicated followers of the atheistic philosophy were willing to die for the cause, and each new day was simply a reprieve.

If people were willing to risk everything for a cause based on a lie, how much more should we who know Christ be willing to do so for the truth! Jesus told those who wanted to be His disciples that they had to be willing to follow Him to death. It was to be a commitment of their entire life, no matter what the cost.

In his book One Crowded Hour, Tim Bowden describes an incident in Borneo in 1964. Nepalese fighters known as Gurkhas were asked if they would be willing to jump from airplanes into combat against the Indonesians. The Gurkhas didn’t clearly understand what was involved, but they bravely said they would do it, asking only that the plane fly slowly over a swampy area and no higher than 100 feet. When they were told that the parachutes would not have time to open at that height, the Gurkhas replied, “Oh, you didn’t mention parachutes before!”

Jesus calls us to follow Him with a similar kind of commitment and courage, willing to risk all for His sake.

After dinner one night, a tiny brown sparrow flew inside our house through the front door. A chase ensued. Each time my husband got near to it, the little intruder fluttered away in a desperate search for an exit. Before we could escort it safely outside, the bird toured the house so frantically that we could see its chest throbbing from its rapid heartbeat.

Sometimes we are like that little birdâ€"anxious, frazzled, and afraid of what might happen next. It comforts me to think that “not one [sparrow] falls to the ground” without God knowing about it (Matt. 10:29). He sees and knows everything in our world.

“The eyes of the Lord are in every place” (Prov. 15:3), and nothing escapes His attention, including you and me. God understands and values the finest points of our being. Jesus said, “The very hairs of your head are all numbered” (Matt. 10:30).

It’s amazing that God keeps a tally of our personal trivia and is even aware of a bird’s misfortune. Since He knows about these small details, we can trust that He sees and cares about the big issues that ruffle our feathers. When we ask Him for help, God’s response is always informed by His perfect knowledge of us and our circumstances. Let’s trust Him with our anxious concerns.

On June 6, 1944, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Allied Commander, was the most powerful man on earth. Under his authority, the largest amphibious army ever assembled prepared to liberate the Nazi-dominated continent of Europe. How was Eisenhower able to lead such a vast army? Part of the answer can be linked to his remarkable skill in working with different kinds of people.

What many do not know, however, is that Ike hadn’t always gotten along with others. As a boy, he often got into fistfights at school. But fortunately he had a caring mother who instructed him in God’s Word. One time, when she was bandaging his hands after an angry outburst, she quoted Proverbs 16:32, “He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.” Years later, Eisenhower wrote, “I have always looked back on that conversation as one of the most valuable moments of my life.” Undoubtedly, by learning to control his anger, Eisenhower was able to work effectively with others.

Inevitably, each of us will at times be tempted to lash out in anger. Yet through God’s work in our lives we can learn to control our anger. What better way to influence people than through a gentle spirit.

Early on a sunny Sunday afternoon after church, I headed out for a walk around the neighborhood. A man was trimming his grass along the sidewalk, and we greeted each other with the usual “Hello, how are you?” In a negative tone, he replied, “It’s just another Sunday.” Later, I wondered what he had meant by that. Was he saying, I’m just doing my choresâ€"going through the motions?

Sometimes even church attendance can become a matter of merely going through the motions on just another Sunday. For the believers in the early church (Acts 2:41-47), joining with fellow believers was a source of excitement. That was when the church first started and everyone was a new believerâ€"so they were bound to be enthusiastic. But what about us? What can we do to make each Sunday special?

Go with the anticipation of meeting with God. While He is with us all the time (Heb. 13:5), God is with us in a unique way as we gather with others who know Him (Matt. 18:20; James 4:8). Bring your burdens and praises to Him.

Go to learn about God. We may not learn something new every week, but we can always be encouraged by the truths of God’s Word (Ps. 119:105). Expect to hear from Him.

Go to fellowship with others. We need each other in this Christian journey. Encourage others, challenge them in their faith, and pray for them (Heb. 10:24-25).

Glance at any newspaper and the headlines tell you what’s wrong with the world. Watch television, listen to the radio, talk to friends, and you will find no shortage of opinions as to what is wrong on planet Earth. That’s because pointing out what’s wrong is easy.

When terrorists hijacked passenger planes and slammed them into the Pentagon, two New York skyscrapers, and a Pennsylvania field, the world quickly called it evil. The destructive power of this epic evil event made people feel paralyzed and helpless. And that’s what evil does best; it makes us feel powerless.

But we’re not. Most of us experience evil on a smaller, more personal scale. And for us, the apostle Paul outlined the proper response. He said we are to abhor evil (Rom. 12:9), not to repay it with more evil (v.17), and not to be overcome by it (v.21).

The true victim of evil is goodnessâ€"the goodness that God designed as part of creation for everyone to enjoy (Gen. 1:4-31). It is surprising then when Paul concludes that the casualty of evil is also its conqueror (Rom. 12:21).

Evil gets all the headlines, but God’s goodness is stronger, and He wants us to use it on His behalf to overcome His enemy.

In my college years I worked as a guide, taking boys on treks into Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. On one occasion one of my hikersâ€"a small, slow chapâ€"lagged behind and took the wrong fork on a trail. When we arrived at our campsite he was nowhere to be found. I frantically went out to search for him.

Just before dark, I came across him sitting by a small lakeâ€"utterly lost and alone. In my joy, I gave him a bear hug, hoisted him on my shoulders, and carried him down the trail to his companions.

In a story by Scottish writer George MacDonald, he describes a young woman finding a child alone and lost in the woods. She gathered him up in her arms and carried him home to her father, at which point she gained an insight that was never to leave her: “Now she understood the heart of the Son of Man, [who came] to find and carry back the stray children to their Father and His.”

I want you too to know the heart of Jesus, the Son of Man, who came to find and carry back His straying children to their Father, “for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10). No matter how far you may have strayed and how lost you may be, He came to seek and to save you.

As a result of adult children neglecting their responsibilities, some elderly parents in Singapore are forced to seek financial help from charities and other state agencies. Speaking about this escalating situation, a government official said, “We cannot legislate love.”

In the Bible, however, love is commanded. That is what Moses told the nation of Israel: “I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways” (Deut. 30:16). And Jesus said that the greatest commandment is to “love the Lord your God” (Mark 12:30).

How can God command love? His supreme display of love at Calvary gave Him that right. Jesus’ beloved disciple, John, wrote: “By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. . . . This is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment” (1 John 3:16,23).

What opportunities do you have to obey God’s command to love?
Honoring parents by caring and providing for them? Ministering to a sick friend? Offering a gracious and kind word to someone who is difficult to love?

In November 2008, the US Supreme Court debated the constitutional limits on foul language. The Federal Communications Commission cited a national broadcasting company for allowing two entertainers to use two common profanities on the air. The broadcasting company argued that “fleeting” profanity that was not blatantly sexual should not be punished. Others countered that it is our duty to protect children from such language.

The issue of inappropriate language was not up for debate in the church at Ephesus. Paul instructed believers that one of the ways they were to respond to the blessings of redemption and being made alive in Christ was by guarding their speech (4:29).

Paul did not want them to be characterized by their old way of living, which included corrupt and unwholesome speech, profanity, malicious gossip, slander, or anything that injures another and sparks dissension. Instead, he wanted the Ephesians through their words to “impart grace” and encouragement, as the need arose.

As followers of Jesus Christ, we want the words that flow from our hearts and out of our mouths to be a life-giving spring. And may all who hear our words receive a blessing.

One of my boyhood hobbies was building model planes. Every time I opened a new box, the first thing I saw was the instructions, but I didn’t think I needed to follow them. In my mind I knew exactly how to put the model together. Not until I had glued a few pieces together did I realize I had skipped an important step, like putting the pilot in the cockpit.

It’s easy to think that we have no need for instructions for our lives, only to later realize that we’ve messed things up. Which is exactly why Jesus advised that following His instructions is the way for wise people to build a safe, solid, and significant life (Matt. 7:24-29). He had just told the listening crowd to turn the other cheek, to go the extra mile, to forgive enemies, and to sell treasures so that they could give to the poor (5:39-44). But just getting the instructions isn’t enough. The key is to follow them. “Whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock” (7:24).

Those who don’t follow the instructions are, as Jesus put it, “foolish” (v.26). To the world, forgiving your enemies and giving to the poor may seem like a silly way to build a life, but, take it from Jesus, it’s the wise way.

On Jack Borden’s 101st birthday, he awoke at 5 a.m., ate a hearty breakfast, and was at his law office by 6:30 ready to begin his day. When asked the secret of his long life, the practicing attorney smiled and quipped, “Not dying.”

But there’s more to it than that. Mr. Borden, who was baptized at age 11 in the Clear Fork of the Trinity River, told Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram reporter David Casstevens, “I’m a firm believer that God has His hand in everything that happens. He is letting me live for some reason. I try to do the things that I believe He wants me to.”

Ezra the priest experienced the “good hand of his God upon him” when he led a delegation to Jerusalem to provide spiritual leadership for the former captives who were rebuilding the temple and the city (Ezra 7:9-10). Ezra found strength and courage in knowing that the Lord was with them each step of the way. “So I was encouraged, as the hand of the Lord my God was upon me; and I gathered leading men of Israel to go up with me” (v.28).

When we see the Lord’s hand in our lives, it brings forth a deep “Thank You” and a growing desire to do what He wants us to do.

Floyd Mayweather has been arrested several times since 2002 in battery and violence cases in Las Vegas and in his hometown of Grand Rapids, Mich.

He was convicted in 2002 of misdemeanor battery stemming from a fight with two women at a Las Vegas nightclub. He received a suspended one-year jail sentence and was ordered to undergo impulse-control counseling.

He was fined in Grand Rapids in February 2005 and ordered to perform community service after pleading no contest to misdemeanor assault and battery for a bar fight.

He was acquitted by a Nevada jury in July 2005 after being accused of hitting and kicking Harris during an argument outside a Las Vegas nightclub.

Harris, then 25, recanted her allegations and testified that she lied to police because she was angry Mayweather left her for another woman.

Harris told jurors that Mayweather was a "teddy bear inside" and said she knew "no matter what I did, he would never put his hands on me."

PDI: Despite all the distractions, Manny Pacquiao will pull all stops in training for his Nov. 13 showdown with Antonio Margarito in Texas.

“Manny will train hard so his fight becomes easy,” said conditioning expert Alex Ariza after arriving yesterday from Los Angeles.

Ariza told the Inquirer he is scheduled to meet with Pacquiao today to plan out his training schedule and decide when they will set up the training camp in Baguio City.

Pacquiao has started his morning jogs to get into shape for the hard grind ahead once trainer Freddie Roach arrives over the weekend.

The Pacman’s chief of staff, lawyer Franklin “Jeng” Gacal, said the pound-for-pound king is set to “train this afternoon in a gym somewhere near the Batasan complex.”

“When it comes to fighting I have never seen anybody more focused,” said Ariza of Pacquiao, who is going for an eighth title in as many divisions when he fights Margarito for the vacant WBC super welterweight crown at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Boxing and Boxers / HBO 247 Pacquiao-Margarito Fight
September 15, 2010, 11:02:24 AM
HBO Sports’ groundbreaking “24/7” reality franchise, which has captured 12 Sports Emmy® Awards, returns in October for its ninth boxing installment with 24/7 PACQUIAO/MARGARITO, an all-new four-episode, all-access series, it was announced today by Ross Greenburg, president, HBO Sports. Debuting SATURDAY, OCT. 23 (10:30-11:00 p.m. ET/PT), the series will follow two elite fighters at different stages â€" the brilliant Manny Pacquiao, in the prime of his record-setting career, and the reinstated Antonio Margarito, looking for redemption following his involvement in an attempted “loaded gloves” incident â€" as they prepare for their Nov. 13 pay-per-view showdown at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Tex.

Noted Greenburg, “ ‘24/7’ excels when there is great drama and this fight has it. Manny Pacquiao continues to conquer new challenges in the ring and in his life, while Antonio Margarito returns to the ring having been through a very controversial episode that polarized many in the boxing community. ‘24/7’ will examine all aspects of what has taken place since the night Antonio Margarito fought Shane Mosley. We will chronicle the suspension handed down to Margarito and the subsequent reinstatement process.”

Episodes two and three of 24/7 PACQUIAO/MARGARITO debut on subsequent Saturdays â€" Oct. 30 (10:00-10:30 p.m.) and Nov. 6 (10:45-11:15 p.m.) â€" while the finale debuts Friday, Nov. 12 (9:30-10:00 p.m.), the night before the intriguing showdown. All four episodes will have multiple replay dates on HBO, and the series will also be available on HBO On Demand.

24/7 PACQUIAO/MARGARITO will provide exclusive behind-the-scenes access, along with in-depth interviews, as the fighters prepare for their showdown. The low-key Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KOs), who has grown into a worldwide superstar, hails from the Philippines, where he is a cherished icon and was recently elected to Congress. Margarito’s (38-6, 27 KOs) climb to boxing’s elite level is rooted in Tijuana, Mexico; he was among the most feared welterweights in the early part of this decade.

This fast-paced series will capture the interactions and rigors both men experience in preparing for their contest. Making his fourth “24/7” appearance, Pacquiao is expected to surround himself with a familiar contingent of family and friends as he trains with trusted longtime associate Freddy Roach. Margarito is making his “24/7” debut.

24/7 PACQUIAO/MARGARITO is the latest installment of the acclaimed “24/7” franchise that began in 2007. At the 2010 Sports Emmy® Awards, “24/7” was recognized with five Emmys® for production excellence and is the most honored sports series on television over the past three years, earning 12 Sports Emmys®. - source: boxingnews24.com

Moving swiftly, the Supreme Court Tuesday stopped impeachment proceedings against Ombudsman Merceditas “Merci” Gutierrez, but the chair of the House justice committee said he would defy the order and warned of a constitutional crisis.

The court, voting 8-3, directed the committee headed by Iloilo Rep. Niel Tupas Jr. to observe a status quo ante following Gutierrez’s petition for certiorari and prohibition, which claimed the impeachment cases against her were “capricious and whimsical.”
Supreme Court spokesperson Midas Marquez said that the tribunal’s directive meant that the panel should observe the situation before it decided to give due course to two separate impeachment complaints after finding them sufficient in form and substance.

Marquez said that the court decided to issue an indefinite order for a status quo ante, rather than a temporary restraining order (TRO), because “the act sought to be restrained has not yet been performed.” It gave the committee 10 days to respond to the order.

“We are supreme in our own sphere of influence,” Tupas said in a hastily called news conference, pointing out the legislature is coequal with the judiciary.

He said his committee would proceed with impeachment hearings scheduled on Sept. 28 and 29 and that Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. had been informed of his decision.

In a statement Tuesday night, Belmonte said he had yet to receive the court order. He described the tribunal’s action as “unexpected” and appeared “to infringe” on the constitutional mandate granting the House the “exclusive power to initiate all cases of impeachment.”

“However, as a courtesy to a coequal branch of government, we shall, in the meantime, abide by the court’s order,” Belmonte said.

He stressed the House would not abdicate its duty. The Constitution, he pointed out, commands the justice committee to report on the impeachment complaint within 60 session days from the time it was referred to the panel.

One case per year

In her petition, Gutierrez said that the committee’s decision to hear two impeachment complaints by leftist and civil society groups simultaneously violated a constitutional provision that specifically allowed the trial of only one case a year against a public official who can only be fired by an action of Congress.

The first complaint was filed against Gutierrez on July 22 for culpable violation of the Constitution and betrayal of public trust in connection with the death of a Navy ensign believed to have been murdered, arrests during a 2006 rally and the botched NBN-ZTE deal with China.

The second complaint filed on Aug. 3 cited the Ombudsman’s failure to act promptly on the P729-million fertilizer scam despite Senate findings of anomalous transactions.

“That is the basis for the issuance of the status quo ante order. Those facts alone clearly tell us that there were two impeachment complaints filed within one year,” Marquez said.

Four impeachment complaints were brought in the House against former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Each year, there was always a queue on filing the papers because of the “one complaint per year” rule. The weakest complainants had the first crack at the door, catching the others napping. Arroyo’s dominant allies killed the complaints easily.

Last year, Arroyo allies junked an attempt to impeach Gutierrez for sitting on corruption cases against the then President.

Voting

In Tuesday’s voting, the lone appointee of President Benigno Aquino III, Associate Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, voted against the petition, along with Associate Justices Antonio Carpio and Conchita Carpio-Morales.

Aside from Chief Justice Renato Corona, those who voted for Gutierrez’s motion were Associate Justices Presbiterio Velasco Jr., Diosdado Peralta, Lucas Bersamin, Mariano del Castillo, Roberto Abad, Martin Villarama Jr. and Jose Perezâ€"all Arroyo appointees.

Four justicesâ€"Antonio Eduardo Nachura, Teresita Leonardo-De Castro, Arturo Brion and Jose Mendozaâ€"were on leave and did not participate.
