lahi man gud ang mardigras sa new orleans kaysa ngari.
labina kanag mardigras sa rio de janiero sa brazil.
ang mga street dancing ngari more on praises to their patron saint.
unlike sa new orleans nga tradition lang exchange ug beads.

same with new orleans, their mardigras is always highlighted with flashers and thrill seekers.

The two most famous individuals who I've made personal acquaintances were both physicians.

A) Dr. Villanueva, M.D (Cardiothoracic Surgeon and Director of Surgical Residents)
B) Dr. Updike, M.D (Gastroenterologist; General Internist; Instructor)

I knew both of them through shadowing them these past few years. I am attracted to their voice, their firm understanding in their most respectable fields, and most importantly their unwavering passion in their medical fields.
Dr. Updike stunned me when we had lunch together, he stunned me with his knowledge of the Philippines during World War II. Not only was he a physician, but also a fellow historian.

Dr. Villanueva, to me, was a man on a pedestal. Named one of the best surgeons in the entire state; and specifically in southern New Jersey. The man has trained hundreds of surgical residents; and has performed thousands of procedures in his lifetime. I remember looking at his hand when he explained procedures to me, he never waivered. The man was firm in his gestures, and when he explained something--it was with a soothing and low toned voice. Truly he was a Cardiothoracic Surgeon.

How famous can one get? Those who make a profession on Saving Human Lives and or prolong Life itself, to me, take the cake. The ability to save life and prolong life, the very gift Divine Providence gave to man, is not only a blessing, but true responsibility.

What would you do if you find yourself in the same elevator as this lady?

Well, I did once, while doing translation work for NHK, Japan's public broadcasting network. And for those of you who don't know her, she's Namie Amuro, Japan's top pop diva and fashion trend-setter. This lady is amazing. Known for popularizing the bronzefied hairstyle and high-heeled boots in Japan, she shot to the zenith of popularity about 10 years ago, got pregnant, bore a child and dissolved into obscurity. When she made a comeback recently, she was re-embraced by her fans and their teenage kids and has doubled her following.

Sadly, when I found myself in the same elevator as her, we were not by ourselves. Besides me, there were two cleaning ladies and two of her male alalays. Nobody fussed over her. But when she stepped out, the two janitresses looked at each other and muttered, "I just looked at her billboard today. Can't believe she's that tiny."

Fame does make one bigger than life.

Kung kami ra tong duha, kung ako ma-star-struck, siya ma-moon-struck.   :D Tabla ra mi.

Bitaw, akong reaksyon pareho ra jud sa duha ka tiguwang nga baje. Many famous people, sans make-up, look different, less impressive, in person. I was surprised that the beauty icon Namie Amuro whom I literally looked up in her billboards I had to literally look down upon in person kay gamay ra man diay kaayo siya. Nice thing when you're enclosed in such a small space is that you can't really have an air about you.

Ben, I have changed the thing that you told me in PM.

Thanks Mike. Madala man ta usahay sa atong closeness diri sa TB nga abi nato walay 2,500 other guests nga maniid at any point in time. It just occurred to me that people could actually google anything, their own names included, under the sun and find themselves right into our pajag! One old friend from New York stumbled upon a line I made about her this way.

Siguro magkita ra gyud ta Mike one of these days sa Tagbilaran, di lang diri sa TB...

I just wanted to make a comment on the difference between Philippine festivals (Sandugo included) that highlight street dancing and Mardi Gras (whether in New Orleans or Rio de Janiero).  Mardi Gras is a festival that is celebrated every Tuesday before Ash Wednesday which marks the start of Lent. Mardi is Tuesday in French. Being so, people party all day and all night long. They shout, they laugh, they dance, they drink, they flirt, women romp the streets in thongs and allow their papayas to swing and sway to the beat and rhythm of the music. They let it all hang out because they know that it's going to be their last for quite some time after which they will have to practice abstinence. In effect Mardi Gras which is always characterized by frenzy and wild abandon might be viewed as the collective behaviour of a people who know that the following day they are expected to behave and live a pious life as dictated by religion, and so they go wild and indulge in all worldly pleasures as they can before that day comes. Without meaning to, the thought of a death convict eating his last meal comes to mind. On the other hand most Philippine festivals are anchored on religious celebrations, mostly feast days of patron saints, which explains why almost every street dancing festival in the Philippines feature religious icons that dancers carry and wave around. Probably one of the most popular are the Sinulog of Cebu and Ati-Atihan of Kalibo which both honor the feast day of the Sto. Nino. They do have a distinct dance that devotees perform in church but it has been commercialized by the Philippine Department of Tourism by way of street dancing (which is a main feature of Mardi Gras). This, in fact, gave birth to the celebration of various similar celebrations in different parts of the country (Sandugo included) because the tourism department wanted a street dancing festival to take place every month for the whole year to constantly attract tourists. So, that is how Philippine street dancing festivals got started. They are based on religious celebrations and so people wave religious icons. In Mardi Gras, on the other hand, because it is a kind of "Last-Supper" party, people wave their bananas and papayas.

I think I've read somewhere before that Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday? Ambot kaha mao ba gyud...

anyways, ganahan kaayo ko magtan-aw sa TV anang Mardi Gras sa Brazil sa una kay mga Brazilian women mga gwapa kaayo, but these days, I see scantily clad people and all I think about are the number of STDs (or STIs) they share among them...
