Medicinal properties of plant materials are well known and exploited in modern medicine many of them identified from the traditional knowledge. Coconut is the main plantation in Kerala and contributes in food, medicine and commercial interest of the society. Coconut kernel and oil are the chief ingredient of South Indian food and used in ayurvedic medicines. However, a lesser important material of coconut plant called “leaf sheath scales”, scales covering over the inner leaf sheaths, is used for wound healing in folklore medicine. no scientific records of this fact are not available on literature. The validity of this piece of information is analyzed in this project. Coconut sheath scales can be scratched out from inner leaf sheaths, the fibrous powder in nature. This can be applied in wound directly with a bandage of dry clean cloth. The wound stops bleeding and heals rapidly. This is considered good for even a fatal wound on skull. Since it is having a curing effect, we can consider this product is sterile for applying directly on wound; probably the soft powder of this material stimulates the clotting process and hence prevents bleeding. Some unknown chemical components of this may be stimulating the heeling process. The material may be also having some antibacterial activity. Since application of this material on the wound, do not develop antiseptic problem. Experimental proof these properties and isolation of the active ingredients identify this as a useful wound healing medicine easily available to villagers.

John 1 Spanish Espanyol

Dijo: No soy. ¿Eres tú el profeta? Y respondió: No.

48  Dícele Natanael: ¿De dónde me conoces?

‘TB’ killed more than COVID-19

CORTES, Bohol Aug 15, 2020 (PIA) â€"Corona virus disease (COVID) way have killed many Filipinos already, but the figure is way far below the deaths credited to tuberculosis (TB).

This sums up the gist of the Kapihan sa PIA which tackled the Provincial TB program that was sidelined as communities took COVID seriously.
Like the dreaded coronavirus disease (COVID), tuberculosis (TB) is highly contagious and may infect anyone unsuspecting.

Like COVID which takes a sophisticated medical laboratory analysis to confirm the virus’ presence, it would take a good xray and sputum examination in a laboratory to confirm the presence of the mycobacterium causing the disease.

Like Covid, TB bacteria can be airborne and could infect individuals who are in close proximity to the sick person.
Unlike Covid which can manifest within 14 days, it may take years before a latent tuberculosis can be manifested in a person.

Like Covid which has killed thousands of Filipinos, tuberculosis also ranks among the country’s top five killers.
Unlike Covid, there is already an established treatment against tuberculosis, but not everyone is keen in getting the free treatment.

Like Covid, one can protect itself from tuberculosis by wearing face masks and by keeping a safe distance enough to be spared from the droplets one spews when coughing or sneezing.
But then, tuberculosis is among the leading causes of disease and deaths in the country, bared Department of Health nurse from the Regional Office and assigned at the Provincial Health Office, during the recent Kapihan sa PIA aired at DyTR and 92.7 Bee FM.
Nurse Arnold Bongcac Jr., in fact names tuberculosis and pneumonia in fifth and third among the country’s top disease in morbidity and mortality.
In fact, information from the Gallares Hospital bared that several of those people treated relative to Covid in Bohol have shown lung infections, telltale signs of the bacterial infection, said Bohol TB Program coordinator and nurse Polizena Rances during the same Kapihan.

The Kapihan, solely dedicated to commemorate August as the Lung Month, tackled pneumonia and tuberculosis: two diseases that affect the lungs.

Last year, we had 7,528 cases of tuberculosis but so far, there are only about 3,061 of these cases with the patient coming out for the free treatment, bared Bongcac.

This also means that there at 4,467 individuals with tuberculosis who are freely going out, maybe innocently riding with you in air-conditioned buses and vans, every cough or sneeze or even when droplets fly, they have the capacity to infect everyone with them riding in the public transportation.
Most of these people may not know they already are bacteria carriers like Covid, but having cough for more than a couple of days should be a good warning sign, said Rances.

People have to know that TB can be treated for free, and all it would take is six months of diligently taking the programmatic approach therapy, and that it is okay because once one starts treatment, he would stop from spreading the bacteria, Rances, who heads the Provincial TB Program in line with the National TB program said.
Still struggling with 40.66% case detection rate for TB, the Provincial Program coordinator bared that there are free mass screening and diagnostic sputum microscopy that one can avail.
Still battling with beating TB as with the misconceptions people have against the disease, the public health nurse said there is a misplaced stigma that is keeping people from coming out.

Families may hide their patient, the problem with that is the patient can unwittingly transfer the bacteria and infect those who are not as cautious. (rachiu/PIA-7/Bohol)

FEATURE:
At home in a garden at Jolits Eco Farm

Thousands of graduates proceed with their lives in jobs not really related with their college courses. In Bohol, two young agriculturists never thought banking on their extensive years in integrated pest management can lead them to build a home where their kids wake up to a garden in a middle of a model learning site for integrated diversified organic farming here.

Now with the Agricultural Training Institute’s (ATI) certification as an Agricultural Learning Site, Jolit’s Garden and Eco Farm, owned by couple Jomar Meletante Balag and Lita Ocho Balag in Barangay Cambacay Batuan sprouted from a 100 square meter farm testing in aquaculture on a sandy clay soil characteristic of the area.

In fact, developing that small patch that may not really sustainably feed a family has earned criticisms from neighbors who know that without much water in the area, growing, much more relying on a garden to feed the family is next to foolhardy.

The designated farm area is an undulating lot with bushes typical of clay soil and some shallow depressions with stagnant shallow water which the rains have left. Behind is a tall hill with secondary growth timberlands. Nothing really promising.

Not to Jomar, whose life has been toughened by overcoming challenges.

In his final years in high school in Lourdes in Panglao, he joined 7 other students who hoped to get scholarships from a Japanese company to proceed to college.

Born in Danao Panglao and dreaming of getting a better life, Jomar hurdled each test mostly associated with the lack of financial capacity to buy his way out of problems.

He had his first strike at luck when he earned a college scholarship through the Japanese company as benefactor.

Even with a college scholarship, where most men of raw timbre would just lie down and await for the next bell for class, Jomar still tried to find work. Accepted as school striver assigned at the registrar’s office while at the Central Visayas State College for Agriculture, Forestry and Technology, now Bohol Island State University in Bilar, Jomar dug a hole of diligence where he could sow his future.

Knowing he would need hard work to bleed out food from his small patch of land in Panglao, Jomar had to brutally test his muscles in hard work and take his studies to heart.

His heart incidentally found a girl, beautiful, modest and equally hardworking.

To him, Lita Sabijon Ocho was a girl worthy to be his wife, and motivated him to double up work even harder.

Also a working student of a faculty member in school, Lita was then taking Bachelor of Agriculture major in Integrated Pest Management.

Truly intent on pursuing his dreams and his love for Lita, his persistence, hard work and diligence sprouted a love story, finding each other a motivation to escape the wretched life.

Graduating Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Major in Integrated Pest Management, Jomar found himself taking on the same course that preoccupied her, knowing that if luck wills it, they both will have to work together to make their chances in farming better.

Married in 2005 after graduation, Jomar felt he needed a stable job he would need to start a family. Not farming as the pay was not as promising and cash came only after harvest.

This led him to take on an offer for him to work in Japan, care of his benefactor. He immediately went on a crash course in Basic Japanese Language in Cebu and by November, was off to Japan.

Three years, before the contract ends and Jomar knew Lita has delivered his first child, one a father would never have missed. But, feeding a family now becomes even more pressing.
Homesick, tired and alone, Jomar still performed well to the delight of his benefactor until he decided to come home to his wife after his contract ended.

That was when husband and wife started to plan together to get a serious look at farming. A farm around a garden and a home in the middle.

Starting off with a 100 square meter patch of land in Cambacay Batuan where Lita’s family owned, Jomar first found a strength at the characteristic clay soil which is ideal for keeping water, something that they can get only after some rains.

Starting off by developing a fishpond, the young couple earned criticism from family and neighbors.

“You dig a fishpond in an area that has water problems, that is a problem,” his father in law accordingly told him.

Clay soil however has great water keeping qualities, both young agriculturists know, so they did not mind the queer looks from neighbors.

A cutflower and vegetable farmer while young, Jomar’s experience in his home in Danao Panglao was his ace on the sleeve. Cutflower and vegetable sales supplied his school needs in elementary and high school.

Now in Batuan, far from his birthplace, Jomar and Lita started on a cutflower and a vegetable garden, taking in his experience and heaped it with the science that they learned in school.

Cutflowers attract bees, and so they ventured into a culture of pollinators.

Form that idea, their garden became a home to wild stingless bees as pollinators to their vegetable and flower garden.

“With pollinators, you get 30-40% more of the harvests,” he claimed, knowing too that stingless bees are sometimes decimated by farmers who do not know the insect’s critical roles in flowers and fruiting vegetables.

“Besides, you can harvest better honey sacs from wild stingless bees,” Jomar who now also sells honey in 250 and 1000 gram tubes proudly confessed.

In the background, the Balag’s youngest kid along with kids his age, totes a bolo and tucks a cutting along the pathway in the now 4,000 square-meter family farm.

“We, with Lita, make sure our kids pick on the habit, because all who know how to eat must know how to plant,” he jokes in between the informal interview.

After the bees come insects: bees, butterfly and even frogs drawn to the ponds that refuse to drain.

These incidentally also attract birds, and the most notable among them is a pair of the endemic Philippine Frogmouth, now a rare bird sighted in only very few areas in Bohol.

A frogmouth feeds on grasshoppers, cicadas, crickets and beetles, insects that could only survive in areas where inorganic chemical fertilizers and pesticides are inexistent.

The good this is that these couple has been regularly nesting in the farm, Lita shared, and pointing to a nestling sitting alone on a nest of downy feathers, its telltale yellow trim on the beak tracing the frogmouths characteristics.

Anytime soon, the female would sit on the nest, the male has just ended his duty watching the nestling and would start hunting for food. Frogmouths are generally nocturnal, she added.

The stagnant waters here also offer refuge for the endemic Asian box turtles, and a pair they found in the area is now as much as 500 individuals from hatchlings to mature adults.

An enclosure houses these box turtles, amphibians at that, with the comforts of a mossy swimming pond and a crawling yard that lets the turtles bask and swim to adjust their body temperatures.

“Every 10 eggs, I get two which I leave to hatch outside. This is our share for nature’s recovery,” Jomar said.

With abundant shades, plenty of water ponds and food, it would be no wonder of a hatching would opt to stay, now at home among the organic litter in the farm.

“Next on the family’s list is breeding a softshell turtle which has more meat that the native box turtles,” he shared as he guided a team touring the farm.

Jolits Eco Farm also has a family carabao, sheep, goats, pigs, native chicken, turkey, geese and native ducks, all sustained with the organic feeds they harvest from the farm.

The animal wastes also go to a pile that becomes fertilizer, or mixed with molasses, fruit and vegetable extracts for use within the farm.

The old fishpond now has golden tilapia: the pond regulates the garden temperature, attracts dragonflies whose nymphs control tilapia fingerlings and wrigglers that can be dengue carrying mosquitoes if not controlled, he explained during the tour.

Everything here is organic, Jomar points out.

Near the restroom is a rain water collector which draws mosquitoes away from the restrooms, golden tilapia prowl under the water, eating the wrigglers mosquitoes breed and lotus and aquatic plants float to control the water temperature and make it crystal clear.

Elsewhere are duckweeds and azolla ponds, these two plants supply the biofeeds the farm needs for their livestock.

Here, passion fruit, pangyawan vines, blue ternates, a trellis for grapes and other tendrils form a natural canopy, while the pathways winding around the farm are plants in every collector’s dream, Jomar rattles off scientific and English names only the scientific community can get on.

Calathea, philodendron, caladium, sanseviera, begonias, coleus, hibiscus, orchids, palms and an endless list of ornamental and cutflowers flank the stone pathways.

Herbs and medicinal plants also interspace the garden, plants placement carefully planned so a pest of one plant can’t attack because a natural plant pesticide is nearby.

After opening the farm in December 2010 as an integrated diversified organic farm garden, Jolits Eco Farm capped the second place for the district’s Bahay Kubo Food Always in the Home, Herbal Organic Plants Everywhere and Chicken Always Raised In The Yard (FAITH, HOPE, ChARITY) backyard garden contest.

With the children also actively owning shares in the chores, it has now become a lighter work for the couple who only hires helpers on major farm jobs.

One takes on the carabao to pasture, another one takes the sheep and goats, one goes to the fowl coop were native chicken, geese, turkey and ducks are kept.

By 2017, the Balag Family reaped the Suhid sa Mag-uumang Bol-anon Farm Family Category and took it again in 2018.

That same year, Batuan again picked the Balag family home in a garden as best Balay Batuanon.

As member of the Kapunungan sa mga Bol-anong Organikong Mag-uuma, the Balag’s share and co-share technologies with visitors interested in organic farming, and as member of the United Small Ruminants Raisers Association, the farm also helps train ruminant livestock farmers.

With native free-range chicken in the farm as member of the Bohol Native Chicken Growers Association, it was never hard for the farm and the family to be certified as an agriculture learning site.

The paycheck?

Jomar Balag, who found that his flower garden is his ace, sells hundreds of sprouted seedlings, grafted saplings and potted plants would only timidly smile. The give-away however is that his neighbors have also displayed potted flower and ornamental plants in their yards, showing that they too now know there is money in ornamental plants.

The best of all, Jomar said, for years now, the frogmouth has been a constant visitor, the farm itself becoming a nesting site for the rare endemic bird.

With this, the family, which feels it has made the bird feel safe with them, and the food abundant here, only makes the family stick more to organic technology as chemicals could kill the rare bird.

And the native turtles. And the fresh water lobster that thrives in a cement pond below the Balag house window.

Food in here is as fresh as can be: cooked within five minutes after picking from the garden, aromatic herbs garnishing, and the delectable scent of home cooking a Boholano house is famed for, spills into the neighborhood.

For the Balag kids, play is as fun as grating coconuts for the milk, riding the carabao and waking up to the smell of fresh flowers in the yard, the crow of roosters and the symphony of birds: everything one dreams of a home in a garden farm. (rahchiu/PIA-7/Bohol)

Today the Father’s Plan Notched Forward Significantly!
An eTPL31 Opinion

August 13, 2020. It is rare for God’s servants to be privileged to observe a sudden, clearly-discernible leap forward like the one we have seen today â€" in our studied opinion. The UNO Plan to Partition Palestine (1947) was one such occasion. The official proclamation of the State of Israel (1948) was another ... and the recapture of Jerusalem in 1967 as the main accomplishment of the Six Day War.

In all these events, we observed a perceptible and concrete movement forward in the end-time Plan of Israel’s redemption...

Today we saw the publicly announced agreement between the United Arab Emirates and Israel as having come to a firm and agreed peace settlement â€" and the establishment between them of the customary international operational details of trade, diplomacy and other legal matters ... the “Abraham Accord!”

If the agreement is concluded by signatory fulfillment it will be the third such peace agreement of Israel with its Islamic neighbors ... and the first in more than 25 years. That official ceremony is slated to be held in Washington at an upcoming date.
This event certainly seems to be one similar to those already cited â€" a concrete step forward...
But let’s not mistake the direction this agreement is taking.

In our understanding it shall not lead to the conditions of ‘peace and security’ specified as the national benefit certified to be in place in Israel at the time of the future invasion of Israel by Gog.

Some have posited that Israel shall soon reach a state of peace with its Arab neighbors round about them, thus fulfilling one of the two preconditions of Gog of the land of Magog as he makes his fatal error of enormous proportions â€" his ill-fated assault on the nascent Kingdom of Israel’s Messiah. (We see today’s amicable agreement as a factor of another sort which we will discuss father down in this article.)

The other specified member of the two preconditions is that Israel shall possess a great ‘spoil and prey’ which Gog covets and intends to take from her.

But the claim by some that Israel NOW possesses those properties is a misconception, in our opinion.
Why so?

Because of the implications of the phraseology itself ... in addition to a completely separate and clear narrative as to how this future accomplishment shall come about!
‘A spoil, a prey,’ indicates goods captured in warfare or by conflict or even theft.

Today, although a wealthy nation in possession of great reserves of natural gas, of liquid petroleum deposits, and of oil shales (Israel possesses the near equivalence in oil shales alone to equal the liquid petroleum reserves of Saudi Arabia!), Israel does not, at the present time, possess the vast wealth that would satisfy this requirement.
Numerous Biblical prophets have given intimate details as to how Israel shall acquire such vast wealth ... but it is not yet an accomplished fact.

That condition will be achieved by hot conflict with the Islamic nations round about Israel â€" a subject we have studied and elaborated in numerous articles on the eTPL website (which, please see â€" address below), so we will not elaborate in depth.
The details are completely laid out in the scrolls of Obadiah, Isaiah 11, Psalm 83, Isaiah 63, Ezekiel 34-37, and Isaiah 59, among other references â€" over fifty in my personal research.
In our opinion, Israel’s active annexation of large portions of Judea, Samaria and the Jordan River Valley may play a significant role in triggering that final hot conflict.

It may be appear that this new peace agreement with an Islamic neighbor has blunted that action which PM Netanyahu has proclaimed so boldly; it might seem to have been ‘put on hold’ for the time being.

That is an important consideration. Such an annexation could bring about the massive attack revealed by the prophets which will bring the physical Redeemer (Isaiah 59: 19-21) to Zion as the prophet was inspired to write! It seems to have been delayed somewhat by this surprise peace accord with the UAE...

It is reasonable to conclude that Mr. Netanyahu’s plan for annexation was just a bit premature ... and that time has to be allowed for other preparatory events to come about before he is allowed to put his plan into action. Mr. Netanyahu says the delay of annexation is merely temporary; he was quick to point out that he will merely ‘postpone’ the actions to annex the added territory to Israel proper.
God works in mysterious ways, His wonders to perform!

Meanwhile, it is also reasonable that those faithful followers who expect the imminent return of Christ the Redeemer to the household of faith (and subsequently to Israel and its people) are being comforted and reassured that, although the Plan may seem to be ‘tarrying,’ that it is on perfect track toward its fulfillment in our Father’s own good time. As Habakkuk cautioned, “... the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak (i.e., be done), and not lie: though it (seem to) tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.” Habakkuk 2:3.
We believe that today we have witnessed a tangible advance in the formation of the ‘allies’ (for want of a better word) of Israel â€" those who are in agreement with Israel and by definition an enemy of Israel’s enemies ... whomever they are, including the future invader, Gog of the land of Magog.

In Ezekiel 38:13, much is made of the question issued by ‘Sheba and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish,’ as they query the leader of the Gogian host: “Art thou come to take a spoil ... a prey ... to take a great spoil?”
Close consideration of the text reveals this question to be merely that â€" an interrogatory of the most urgent sort. These entities are anxious that Gog’s intention is not just to conquer Israel, but to continue on down to their territories as well. Are they “in danger of being invaded??
In the divinely-breathed account, no answer by the Gogian leader is ever given.

We conclude that this is because he and all his bands are to be obliterated before he is able to reply â€" given that he even intends to reply to them.
Some prophecy students place great emphasis on this question by Sheba and Dedan and the Tarshish influence, concluding that it indicates a force of active resistance to Gog from the lands south of Israel, and that these entities will engage the Gogian host as an ally of Israel.

There is no such scriptural indication that we have ever discovered.
To believe this requires the introduction of other passages of scripture (which are actually irrelevant) and applying them to this conflict.
The diligent student of prophecy must realize that the ancillary factors must be interpreted in the context of â€" and governed by â€" the primary account by Ezekiel (38 and 39).

Our conclusion has long been that none of the other prophets’ writings support the conviction that Israel shall have any active allies at this crucial time. Isaiah 63: 1-6 specifically reveals to us that Israel’s main Contender (the returned Christ) shall have ‘NONE of the people with Me,’ in that conflict. I hasten to add, Israel may have some ‘sympathizers,’ but no actively participating ‘allies.’

But today, in our opinion, a significant movement forward has been made public as nations become aligned for the end-time events.

A former adversary of Israel â€" the United Arab Emirates (UAE) â€" has stated its intention to sign a peace treaty with Israel. In so doing, we believe, the UAE has clearly designated itself as at least one of the components of the entities called ‘Sheba and Dedan’ in Ezekiel’s prophecy. It has declared its agreement with Israel ... and thus become a tacit ‘ally.’
Because ... just where is the UAE located?
It is located at the southeastern end of the Persian Gulf â€" precisely in the area shown on ancient maps as ‘Sheba and Dedan’ â€" an area that covers much of the southern Arabian Peninsula including the southern shore of the Persian Gulf. Many of the people living there are Joktani Arabs â€" descendants of Ishmael (a son of Abraham through Hagar the Egyptian) who work in the oil production facilities located on the Gulf coast.

It is significant to us that the agreement of today is referred to as The Abraham Accord as revealed by President Trump from the Oval Office at its announcement! He said it was because Abraham is the father of the ‘three great faiths’ â€" Christianity, Judaism and Islam.
How could any name be more relevant to end-time conditions?
What do you suppose the UAE’s motivation behind this agreement to have been?

Look at the map.
The UAE is Sunni Islamic in character. It lies mere miles across the Gulf from the most concentrated population of Shia Islamicists â€" the Islamic Republic of Iran (or Persia) which threateningly overshadows its neighbors to the south. These two factions of Islam absolutely loathe each other â€" and are now killing each other in the chaotic areas of unrest between the Rivers Nile and Euphrates ... in the precise midst of the Land which the Christ of the Second Advent is coming swiftly to liberate from all of them!

Modern Iran is the ‘Persia’ which is prominently mentioned as a cohort of the other Gogian powers who shall in future time invade (Greater) Israel.
They shall come “from the uttermost north” and meet their collective doom upon the broad expanses of what today is northern Jordan â€" but which, in that day is “in Israel,” where their vast burial ground is appointed to be established (cf., Ezekiel 38:11), clearly indicating that region at that future time to be a legal part of the kingdom of Christ, in our opinion!

Further details of our extensive and intensive research as to all these end-time expectations may be found on the eTPL website located at this URL:   http://sites.google.com/site/prophecyletters2013/

Jonah Chapter 4
1  But Jonah was exceedingly displeased, and it kindled anger in him.

2  And he prayed to the LORD and said, "Please, O LORD, was this not my saying when I was still in my land? Therefore on account of this I fled to Tarshish, for I knew that You are a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and One Who repents of the evil.

3  And now, O LORD, I beseech You, take my life from me, for better is my death than my life."

4  And the LORD said, "Is your anger rightly kindled in you?"

5  And Jonah went out of the city and sat on the east of the city. And he made himself a booth there and sat under it in the shade, until he might see what would happen to the city.

6  And the LORD God prepared a plant, and it grew up over Jonah, to be shade over his head, in order to deliver him from his misery. So Jonah rejoiced with great joy over the plant.

7  But God also prepared a worm as the morning dawned the next day. And it attacked the plant, and it withered.

8  And it came to pass when the sun rose, God ordained a scorching east wind. And the sun beat on the head of Jonah, so that he fainted. And he asked for his life to die. And he said, "Better is my death than my life."

9  And God said to Jonah, "Is it right for your anger to be kindled over the plant?" And he said, "My anger is rightly kindled, even to death."

10  And the LORD said, "You have had pity on the plant, for which you had not labored, nor made it grow, which came up overnight, and also perished in a night.

11  And should I not spare Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than a hundred and twenty thousand men who do not know between their right and their left hand, besides much livestock?"

Jonah 3
1  And the Word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying,

2  "Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out to it the proclamation that I am declaring to you."

3  And Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the Word of the LORD. And Nineveh was a very great city of three days' journey across.

4  And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried and said, "Yet forty days and Nineveh shall be overthrown!"

5  And the people of Nineveh believed God. And they proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them,

6  For word came to the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne. And he laid aside his robe from him, and covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

7  And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his great ones, saying, "Do not let man or beast, herd or flock taste anything; do not let them feed, nor drink water.

8  But let man and animal be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God. And let them each one turn from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.

9  Who knows? God may repent, and He may have pity and turn away from His fierce anger, so that we do not perish."

10  And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way. And God repented of the evil that He had said He would do to them, and He did not do it.

Jonah Chapter 2
1  And Jonah prayed to the LORD his God out of the fish's belly,

2  And he said, "I cried to the LORD by reason of mine affliction. And He answered me. Out of the belly of the unseen I cried for help, and You heard my voice,

3  For You cast me into the depths of the seas, and the current surrounded me. All Your billows and Your waves passed over me.

4  Then I said, 'I am cast off from Your eyes, yet I will look again toward Your holy temple.'

5  The waters encompassed me, even to the soul; the depth closed around me; the seaweed was wrapped about my head.

6  I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars closed around me forever; yet You have brought up my life from the ruin, O LORD my God.

7  When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the LORD; and my prayer came to You, into Your holy temple.

 8  They who take heed to lying vanities forsake their own mercy;

9  But I will sacrifice to You with the voice of thanksgiving; I will fulfill that which I have vowed. Salvation belongs to the LORD!"

10  And the LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out on the dry land.

Jonah 1
1  And the Word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

2  "Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me."

3  But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. And he went down to Joppa. And he found a ship going to Tarshish. And he paid its fare, and went down into it, in order to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD.

4  But the LORD hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship threatened to break up.

5  Then the seamen were afraid, and each man cried to his god. And they threw out the wares that were in the ship, into the sea in order to lighten it. But Jonah had gone down into the hold of the ship; and he lay there, and was fast asleep.

6  So the chief of the seaman came to him and said to him, "Why are you sleeping, O sound sleeper? Arise, call upon your God! It may be that your God will notice us, and we will not perish."

7  And they said, each one to his fellow, "Come and let us cast lots, so that we may know who has caused this evil to come upon us." And they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

8  Then they said to him, "Please tell us, for what reason this evil has come upon us. What is your business? And where do you come from? Where is your country? And of what people are you?"

9  And he said to them, "I am a Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, Who has made the sea and the dry land."

10  Then the men were afraid with a great fear. And they said to him, "What is this you have done?" For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the LORD because he had told them.

11  Then they said to him, "What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us?" For the sea was raging and growing more tempestuous.

12  And he said to them, "Pick me up and throw me out into the sea. And the sea shall be calm to you; for I know that this great storm has come on you for my sake."

13  But the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not, for the sea grew more tempestuous against them.

14  And they cried to the LORD and said, "We beg You, O LORD, we beg You, let us not perish for this man's life, and do not lay upon us innocent blood, for You, O LORD, have done as it pleased You."

15  And they lifted Jonah up and threw him out into the sea; and the sea ceased from its raging.

16  Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice to the LORD, and vowed vows.

17  And the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Amos 9
1  I saw the LORD standing by the altar. And He said, "Strike the lintel of the door, so that the thresholds shall shake; and break them on the heads of all of them. And I will kill the last of them with the sword. Not one of them fleeing will get away, and not a fugitive of them will escape.

2  If they dig into the grave, there My hand shall take them. And if they go up to the heavens, I will bring them down from there.

3  And if they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out from there. And if they are hidden from My sight in the bottom of the sea, I will command the serpent there, and he shall bite them.

4  And if they go into captivity before their enemies, I will command the sword there, and it shall kill them; and I will set My eyes upon them for evil, and not for good."

5  And the Lord GOD of hosts is He Who touches the land, and it shall melt, and all who dwell in it shall mourn. And all of it shall rise up like a flood, and sink down like the Nile of Egypt.

6  It is He Who builds His staircase in the heavens, and He has founded the heavens over the earth; He Who calls for the waters of the sea, and pours them out upon the face of the earth; the LORD is His name.

7  "Are you not like the children of the Ethiopians to Me, O children of Israel," says the LORD? "Have I not brought Israel up out of the land of Egyptâ€"and the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir?

8  Behold, the eyes of the Lord GOD are on the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from the face of the earth; except that I will not completely destroy the house of Jacob," says the LORD.

9  "For lo, I will command, and I will shake the house of Israel among all the nations, as one shakes with a sieve, yet not a grain shall fall to the earth.

10  All the sinners of My people shall die by the sword, who say, 'The evil shall not draw near, or confront us.'

 11  In that day I will raise up the tabernacle of David that has fallen, and close up its breaches; and I will raise up its ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old;

12  So that they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the nations on whom My name is called," says the LORD who is doing this.

13  "Behold, the days come," says the LORD, "that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him who sows seed. And the mountains will drop sweet wine, and all the hills will flow with it.

14  And I will bring back the exiles of My people Israel, and they shall build the cities which are desolate, and they shall live in them. And they shall plant vineyards and drink their wine. They shall also make gardens and eat their fruit.

15  And I will plant them in their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have given them," says the LORD your God.

Amos Chapter 8
1  The Lord GOD made me see this: And behold, a basket of summer fruit!

2  And He said, "Amos, what do you see?" And I said, "A basket of summer fruit." Then the LORD said to me, "The end has come to My people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more.

3  And the songs of the temple shall be howlings in that day," says the Lord GOD. "The dead bodies shall be many. In every place one shall throw them out with silence."

4  Hear this, you who trample upon the needy, even to make the poor of the land to fail,

5  Saying, "When will the new moon be gone so that we may sell grain? And the Sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small and the shekel great, and perverting the balances by deceit;

6  That we may buy the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals; and sell the chaff of the wheat?"

7  The LORD has sworn by the Glory of Jacob, "Surely I will never forget any of their works.

8  Shall not the land tremble for this, and all who dwell in it mourn? And all of it shall rise up like a flood. And it shall overflow and sink like the Nile of Egypt.

9  And it shall be in that day," says the Lord GOD, "I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the light of day.

10  And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into weeping; and I will bring up sackcloth on all loins, and baldness on every head. And I will make it like the mourning of an only son, and the end of it like a bitter day.

11  Behold, the days come," says the Lord GOD, "that I will send a famine in the land; not a famine of bread nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD.

12  And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east; they shall run to and fro to seek the Word of the LORD, and shall not find it.

13  In that day the beautiful virgins and the young men shall faint for thirst.

14  Those who swear by the sin of Samaria and say, 'As your God lives, O Dan,' and, 'As the way of Beersheba lives'â€"even they shall fall and never rise up again."

Amos 7
1  The Lord GOD made me see this: And behold, He is forming locusts at the beginning of the growth of the late grassâ€"even behold, the late grass after the king's mowings.

2  And it came to pass that when they had made an end of eating the tender plant of the land, then I said, "O Lord GOD, forgive, I pray You. How can Jacob stand? For he is small."

3  The LORD repented for this; "It shall not be," says the LORD.

4  The Lord GOD made me see this: And behold, the Lord GOD was calling to contend by fire. And it consumed the great deep, and it was devouring part of it.

5  Then I said, "O Lord GOD, I pray You, cease. How can Jacob stand? For he is small."

6  The LORD repented for this; "This also shall not be," says the Lord GOD.

7  He made me see this: And behold, the LORD was standing upon a wall made by a plumb line, with a plumb line in His hand.

8  And the LORD said to me, "Amos, what do you see?" And I said, "A plumb line." Then the LORD said, "Behold, I will set a plumb line in the midst of My people Israel. I will not again pass by them any more.

9  And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the holy places of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise up against the house of Jeroboam with the sword."

10  Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, "Amos has plotted against you in the midst of the house of Israel; the land is not able to bear all his words.

11  For thus Amos says, 'Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely go into exile out of his land.' ”

12  And Amaziah said to Amos, "O seer, go, flee for yourself into the land of Judah; and eat bread there, and prophesy there.

13  But do not prophesy again any more at Bethel; for it is the king's temple, and it is the king's royal house."

14  Then Amos answered and said to Amaziah, "I was no prophet, nor was I a prophet's son. But I was a shepherd and a gatherer of fruit from sycamore trees.

15  And the LORD took me from behind the flock, and the LORD said to me, 'Go, prophesy to My people Israel.'

16  Now therefore hear the Word of the LORD. You say, 'Do not prophesy against Israel, and do not drop words against the house of Isaac.'

17  Therefore thus says the LORD, 'Your wife shall be a harlot in the city, and your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword, and your land shall be divided by line. And you shall die in a defiled land; and Israel shall surely go into exile out of his land.' ”

Amos 6
1  Woe to those at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, who are named chief of the nations. And the house of Israel came to them.

2  Pass over to Calneh, and see; and from there go to Hamath the great. Then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are they better than these kingdoms, or is their border greater than your border?

 3  You who put the evil day far away, and cause the seat of violence to come near;

 4  Who lie upon beds of ivory, and those sprawling upon their couches, and eating lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the stall;

 5  Who sing idle songs to the sound of the harp; and invent instruments of music for themselves, like David;

6  Who drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the best of oilsâ€"but do not grieve for the affliction of Joseph!

7  Therefore now they shall go into exile with the first of the exiles. And the feasting of those who recline themselves shall cease.

8  The Lord GOD has sworn by Himselfâ€" thus says the LORD, the God of hosts, "I despise the glory of Jacob, and hate his palaces; and I will shut up the city and all its fullness.

9  And it shall be if ten men remain in one house, then they shall die.

10  And a dead man's uncle shall take him up, and he who burns the bodies, to bring the bones out of the house, and shall say to him left in the recesses of the house, "Are any bodies still with you?" And he shall say, "No." Then he shall say, "Hold your tongue, for no one shall mention the name of the LORD."

11  For, behold, the LORD commands, and He will strike the great house into pieces, and the little house into cracks.

12  Shall horses run upon the rock? Will one plow there with oxen? For you have turned justice into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into hemlockâ€"

13  You who rejoice over nothing, who say, "Have we not taken horns to ourselves by our own strength?"

14  "But behold, I will raise a nation up against you, O house of Israel," says the LORD, the God of hosts. "And they shall afflict you from the entrance to Hamath to the river of the Arabah."

THE REVOLUTIONARY by D. H. Lawrence

Look at them standing there in authority
The pale-faces,
As if it could have any effect any more.
Pale-face authority,
Caryatids,
Pillars of white bronze standing rigid, lest the skies fall.
What a job they’ve got to keep it up.
Their poor, idealist foreheads naked capitals
To the entablature of clouded heaven.
When the skies are going to fall, fall they will
In a great chute and rush of débâcle downwards.
Oh and I wish the high and super-gothic heavens would come down now,
The heavens above, that we yearn to and aspire to.
I do not yearn, nor aspire, for I am a blind Samson.
And what is daylight to me that I should look skyward?
Only I grope among you, pale-faces, caryatids, as among a forest of pillars that hold up the dome of high ideal heaven
Which is my prison,
And all these human pillars of loftiness, going stiff, metallic-stunned with the weight of their responsibility
I stumble against them.
Stumbling-blocks, painful ones.{26}
To keep on holding up this ideal civilisation
Must be excruciating: unless you stiffen into metal, when it is easier to stand stock rigid than to move.
This is why I tug at them, individually, with my arm round their waist
The human pillars.
They are not stronger than I am, blind Samson.
The house sways.
I shall be so glad when it comes down.
I am so tired of the limitations of their Infinite.
I am so sick of the pretensions of the Spirit.
I am so weary of pale-face importance.
Am I not blind, at the round-turning mill?
Then why should I fear their pale faces?
Or love the effulgence of their holy light,
The sun of their righteousness?
To me, all faces are dark,
All lips are dusky and valved.
Save your lips, O pale-faces,
Which are slips of metal,
Like slits in an automatic-machine, you columns of give-and-take.
To me, the earth rolls ponderously, superbly
Coming my way without forethought or afterthought.
To me, men’s footfalls fall with a dull, soft rumble, ominous and lovely,
Coming my way.{27}
But not your foot-falls, pale-faces,
They are a clicketing of bits of disjointed metal
Working in motion.
To me, men are palpable, invisible nearnesses in the dark
Sending out magnetic vibrations of warning, pitch-dark throbs of invitation.
But you, pale-faces,
You are painful, harsh-surfaced pillars that give off nothing except rigidity,
And I jut against you if I try to move, for you are everywhere, and I am blind,
Sightless among all your visuality,
You staring caryatids.
See if I don’t bring you down, and all your high opinion
And all your ponderous roofed-in erection of right and wrong
Your particular heavens,
With a smash.
See if your skies aren’t falling!
And my head, at least, is thick enough to stand it, the smash.
See if I don’t move under a dark and nude, vast heaven
When your world is in ruins, under your fallen skies.
Caryatids, pale-faces.
See if I am not Lord of the dark and moving hosts
Before I die.
Florence.

GRAPES by D. H. Lawrence

So many fruits come from roses
From the rose of all roses
From the unfolded rose
Rose of all the world.
Admit that apples and strawberries and peaches and pears and blackberries
Are all Rosaceæ,
Issue of the explicit rose,
The open-countenanced, skyward-smiling rose.
What then of the vine?
Oh, what of the tendrilled vine?
Ours is the universe of the unfolded rose,
The explicit,
The candid revelation.
But long ago, oh, long ago
Before the rose began to simper supreme,
Before the rose of all roses, rose of all the world, was even in bud,
Before the glaciers were gathered up in a bunch out of the unsettled seas and winds,
Or else before they had been let down again, in Noah’s flood,
There was another world, a dusky, flowerless, tendrilled world
And creatures webbed and marshy,{23}
And on the margin, men soft-footed and pristine,
Still, and sensitive, and active,
Audile, tactile sensitiveness as of a tendril which orientates and reaches out,
Reaching out and grasping by an instinct more delicate than the moon’s as she feels for the tides.
Of which world, the vine was the invisible rose,
Before petals spread, before colour made its disturbance, before eyes saw too much.
In a green, muddy, web-foot, unutterably songless world
The vine was rose of all roses.
There were no poppies or carnations,
Hardly a greenish lily, watery faint.
Green, dim, invisible flourishing of vines
Royally gesticulate.
Look now even now, how it keeps its power of invisibility
Look how black, how blue-black, how globed in Egyptian darkness
Dropping among his leaves, hangs the dark grape!
See him there, the swart, so palpably invisible:
Whom shall we ask about him?
The negro might know a little.
When the vine was rose, Gods were dark-skinned.
Bacchus is a dream’s dream.
Once God was all negroid, as now he is fair.
But it’s so long ago, the ancient Bushman has forgotten more utterly than we, who have never known.{24}
For we are on the brink of re-remembrance.
Which, I suppose, is why America has gone dry.
Our pale day is sinking into twilight,
And if we sip the wine, we find dreams coming upon us
Out of the imminent night.
Nay, we find ourselves crossing the fern-scented frontiers
Of the world before the floods, where man was dark and evasive
And the tiny vine-flower rose of all roses, perfumed,
And all in naked communion communicating as now our clothed vision can never communicate.
Vistas, down dark avenues
As we sip the wine.
The grape is swart, the avenues dusky and tendrilled, subtly prehensile,
But we, as we start awake, clutch at our vistas democratic, boulevards, tram-cars, policemen.
Give us our own back
Let us go to the soda-fountain, to get sober.
Soberness, sobriety.
It is like the agonised perverseness of a child heavy with sleep, yet fighting, fighting to keep awake;
Soberness, sobriety, with heavy eyes propped open.
Dusky are the avenues of wine,
And we must cross the frontiers, though we will not,
Of the lost, fern-scented world:
Take the fern-seed on our lips,
Close the eyes, and go
Down the tendrilled avenues of wine and the otherworld.

San Gervasio.

FIGS by D. H. Lawrence

The proper way to eat a fig, in society,
Is to split it in four, holding it by the stump,
And open it, so that it is a glittering, rosy, moist, honied, heavy-petalled four-petalled flower.
Then you throw away the skin
Which is just like a four-sepalled calyx,
After you have taken off the blossom with your lips.
But the vulgar way
Is just to put your mouth to the crack, and take out the flesh in one bite.
Every fruit has its secret.
The fig is a very secretive fruit.
As you see it standing growing, you feel at once it is symbolic:
And it seems male.
But when you come to know it better, you agree with the Romans, it is female.
The Italians vulgarly say, it stands for the female part; the fig-fruit:
The fissure, the yoni,
The wonderful moist conductivity towards the centre.
Involved,
Inturned,
The flowering all inward and womb-fibrilled;
And but one orifice.{19}
The fig, the horse-shoe, the squash-blossom.
Symbols.
There was a flower that flowered inward, womb-ward;
Now there is a fruit like a ripe womb.
It was always a secret.
That’s how it should be, the female should always be secret.
There never was any standing aloft and unfolded on a bough
Like other flowers, in a revelation of petals;
Silver-pink peach, Venetian green glass of medlars and sorb-apples,
Shallow wine-cups on short, bulging stems
Openly pledging heaven:
Here’s to the thorn in flower! Here is to Utterance!
The brave, adventurous rosaceæ.
Folded upon itself, and secret unutterable,
And milky-sapped, sap that curdles milk and makes ricotta,
Sap that smells strange on your fingers, that even goats won’t taste it;
Folded upon itself, enclosed like any Mohammedan woman,
Its nakedness all within-walls, its flowering forever unseen,
One small way of access only, and this close-curtained from the light;
Fig, fruit of the female mystery, covert and inward,
Mediterranean fruit, with your covert nakedness,
Where everything happens invisible, flowering and fertilisation, and fruiting{20}
In the inwardness of your you, that eye will never see
Till it’s finished, and you’re over-ripe, and you burst to give up your ghost.
Till the drop of ripeness exudes,
And the year is over.
And then the fig has kept her secret long enough.
So it explodes, and you see through the fissure the scarlet.
And the fig is finished, the year is over.
That’s how the fig dies, showing her crimson through the purple slit
Like a wound, the exposure of her secret, on the open day.
Like a prostitute, the bursten fig, making a show of her secret.
That’s how women die too.
The year is fallen over-ripe,
The year of our women.
The year of our women is fallen over-ripe.
The secret is laid bare.
And rottenness soon sets in.
The year of our women is fallen over-ripe.
When Eve once knew in her mind that she was naked
She quickly sewed fig-leaves, and sewed the same for the man.
She’d been naked all her days before,
But till then, till that apple of knowledge, she hadn’t had the fact on her mind.{21}
She got the fact on her mind, and quickly sewed fig-leaves.
And women have been sewing ever since.
But now they stitch to adorn the bursten fig, not to cover it.
They have their nakedness more than ever on their mind,
And they won’t let us forget it.
Now, the secret
Becomes an affirmation through moist, scarlet lips
That laugh at the Lord’s indignation.
What then, good Lord! cry the women.
We have kept our secret long enough.
We are a ripe fig.
Let us burst into affirmation.
They forget, ripe figs won’t keep.
Ripe figs won’t keep.
Honey-white figs of the north, black figs with scarlet inside, of the south.
Ripe figs won’t keep, won’t keep in any clime.
What then, when women the world over have all bursten into affirmation?
And bursten figs won’t keep?

San Gervasio.

MEDLARS AND SORB-APPLES by D.H. Lawrence

I love you, rotten,
Delicious rottenness.
I love to suck you out from your skins
So brown and soft and coming suave,
So morbid, as the Italians say.
What a rare, powerful, reminiscent flavour
Comes out of your falling through the stages of decay:
Stream within stream.
Something of the same flavour as Syracusan muscat wine
Or vulgar Marsala.
Though even the word Marsala will smack of preciosity
Soon in the pussy-foot West.
What is it?
What is it, in the grape turning raisin,
In the medlar, in the sorb-apple,
Wineskins of brown morbidity,
Autumnal excrementa;
What is it that reminds us of white gods?
Gods nude as blanched nut-kernels,
Strangely, half-sinisterly flesh-fragrant
As if with sweat,
And drenched with mystery.{16}
Sorb-apples, medlars with dead crowns.
I say, wonderful are the hellish experiences
Orphic, delicate
Dionysos of the Underworld.
A kiss, and a vivid spasm of farewell, a moment’s orgasm of rupture,
Then along the damp road alone, till the next turning.
And there, a new partner, a new parting, a new unfusing into twain,
A new gasp of further isolation,
A new intoxication of loneliness, among decaying, frost-cold leaves.
Going down the strange lanes of hell, more and more intensely alone,
The fibres of the heart parting one after the other
And yet the soul continuing, naked-footed, ever more vividly embodied
Like a flame blown whiter and whiter
In a deeper and deeper darkness
Ever more exquisite, distilled in separation.
So, in the strange retorts of medlars and sorb-apples
The distilled essence of hell.
The exquisite odour of leave-taking.
Jamque vale!
Orpheus, and the winding, leaf-clogged, silent lanes of hell.
Each soul departing with its own isolation,
Strangest of all strange companions,
And best.{17}
Medlars, sorb-apples
More than sweet
Flux of autumn
Sucked out of your empty bladders
And sipped down, perhaps, with a sip of Marsala
So that the rambling, sky-dropped grape can add its music to yours,
Orphic farewell, and farewell, and farewell
And the ego sum of Dionysos
The sono io of perfect drunkenness
Intoxication of final loneliness.
San Gervasio.

SK Bioscience, the South Korean pharmaceutical company backed by Bill Gates, may be capable of producing 200 million coronavirus vaccine kits by next June, the Microsoft Corp. co-founder said in a letter to South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

Gates is seeking to cooperate closely with South Korea, the presidential office in Seoul said Sunday, citing the July 20 letter, without elaborating on what else it said.

The U.S. billionaire’s foundation gave $3.6 million in May to SK Bioscience to accelerate the development of COVID-19 vaccines. Besides working on its own vaccine candidates, the company is also one of the contract manufacturers tapped by AstraZeneca Plc to make its vaccine. The company declined further comment on Monday. - source: Flipboard

On Thursday, President Trump repeated his attacks against mail balloting, saying it would lead to “the greatest rigged election in history” and “the greatest fraud ever perpetrated.”

At the same time, his own absentee ballot to vote in Florida’s primary election on Tuesday was en route to Mar-a-Lago. According to the Palm Beach County elections website, the president and first lady Melania Trump both requested absentee ballots on Wednesday.

Amos 5 Faithful Version
1  Hear this word which I take up against you, even a lamentation, O house of Israel.

2  The virgin of Israel has fallen; she shall rise no more; she lies forsaken on her land. There is none to raise her up,

3  For thus says the Lord GOD, "The city that went out by a thousand shall leave a hundred, and that which went out by a hundred shall have ten left in the house of Israel,"

4  For thus says the LORD to the house of Israel, "Seek Me, and you shall live.

5  But do not seek Bethel, nor enter into Gilgal, and do not pass to Beersheba; for Gilgal shall surely go into exile, and Bethel shall come to nothing.

6  Seek the LORD and you shall live, lest He break out like a fire on the house of Joseph and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Bethelâ€"

7  You who turn judgment to wormwood and leave off righteousness in the earth!"

8  Seek Him Who created the Pleiades and Orion, and Who turned the deep darkness into the morning, and Him Who darkened the day into night. Seek Him Who calls for the waters of the sea, and pours them out on the face of the earthâ€" the LORD is His name,

9  Who causes destruction to flash out against the strong, and destruction against the fortress.

10  They hate him who rebukes in the gate, and they despise him who speaks uprightly.

11  Thereforeâ€"because of your trampling upon the poor, and because you take tribute of grain from himâ€"though you have built houses of carved stone, you shall not dwell in them; though you have planted desirable vineyards, you shall not drink wine from them,

12  For I know your many transgressions and your many sins. They afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the gate.

13  Therefore the prudent shall keep silent in that time; for it is an evil time.

14  Seek good and not evil, that you may live; and so the LORD, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as you have spoken.

15  Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate. It may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.

16  Therefore the LORD, the God of hosts, the Master, says this, "Wailing shall be in all streets; and they shall say in all the highways, 'Alas! Alas!' And they shall call the tiller to mourning, and those who are skillful in mourning to wailing.

17  And there shall be wailing in all vineyards; for I will pass through you," says the LORD.

 18  Woe to those desiring the day of the LORD! What is this for you? The day of the LORD is darkness and not light;

19  As if a man fled from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house and leaned his hand on the wall, and a snake bit him.

20  Shall not the day of the LORD be darkness and not light? Even very dark, and no brightness in it?

21  "I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will take no delight in your solemn assemblies.

22  Though you offer Me burnt offerings and your grain offerings, I will not accept them. Nor will I regard the peace offerings of your fat animals.

23  Take the noise of your songs away from Me; for I will not hear the melody of your harps.

24  But let judgment roll down like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream.

25  Have you offered sacrifices and offerings to Me forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?

26  But now you have carried the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun, your images, the star of your gods which you made for yourselves.

27  So I will cause you to go into exile beyond Damascus," says the LORD, Whose name is the God of hosts.

Amos 4
1  Hear this word, cows of Bashan who are in the mountain of Samariaâ€"who oppress the poor, who crush the needy, who say to their husbands, "Bring in wine that we may drink."

2  The Lord GOD has sworn by His holiness, "Behold, the days shall come upon you when they will lift you up with meat hooks, and your posterity with fishhooks.

3  And you shall go out at the breaches in the walls, each woman straight before her. And you shall be cast off to Harmon," says the LORD.

 4  "Come to Bethel and transgress; to Gilgal and multiply transgressing at Gilgal. And bring your sacrifices for the morning, your tithes for three years;

5  And offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving from that which is leavened, and cry out; call out the voluntary offerings, for so you love to do, O children of Israel!" says the Lord GOD.

6  "And I also have given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, and lack of bread in all your places, yet you have not returned to Me," says the LORD.

7  "And I have also withheld the rain from you, when there were yet three months to the harvest. And I caused rain to fall on one city and caused it not to rain on another city; one field was rained on, and the field on which it did not rain dried up.

8  So two or three cities wandered to one city to drink water, but they were not satisfied; yet you have not returned to Me," says the LORD.

9  "I have stricken you with blasting and mildew. When your gardens and your vineyards, and your fig trees, and your olive trees increased, the creeping locust devoured them; yet you have not returned to Me," says the LORD.

10  "I have sent the plague among you after the manner of Egypt; I have slain your young men with the sword, and have taken away your horses. And I have made the stench of your camps to come up into your nostrils; yet you have not returned to Me," says the LORD.

11  "I have overthrown some among you as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you were like a firebrand plucked out of the burning; yet you have not returned to Me," says the LORD.

12  "Therefore I will do this to you, O Israel; and because I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, O Israel!"

13  For lo, He forms the mountains and creates the wind, and declares to man what his thought is. He who makes the morning darkness, and treads upon the high places of the earthâ€"the LORD, the God of hosts, is His name.

PEACH by D.H. Lawrence
Would you like to throw a stone at me?
Here, take all that’s left of my peach.
Blood-red, deep;
Heaven knows how it came to pass.
Somebody’s pound of flesh rendered up.
Wrinkled with secrets
And hard with the intention to keep them.
Why, from silvery peach-bloom,
From that shallow-silvery wine-glass on a short stem
This rolling, dropping, heavy globule?
I am thinking, of course, of the peach before I ate it.
Why so velvety, why so voluptuous heavy?
Why hanging with such inordinate weight?
Why so indented?
Why the groove?
Why the lovely, bivalve roundnesses?
Why the ripple down the sphere?
Why the suggestion of incision?
Why was not my peach round and finished like a billiard ball?
It would have been if man had made it.
Though I’ve eaten it now.{14}
But it wasn’t round and finished like a billiard ball.
And because I say so, you would like to throw something at me.
Here, you can have my peach stone.
San Gervasio.

POMEGRANATE by D.H. Lawrence

You tell me I am wrong.
Who are you, who is anybody to tell me I am wrong?
I am not wrong.
In Syracuse, rock left bare by the viciousness of Greek women,
No doubt you have forgotten the pomegranate-trees in flower,
Oh so red, and such a lot of them.
Whereas at Venice
Abhorrent, green, slippery city
Whose Doges were old, and had ancient eyes,
In the dense foliage of the inner garden
Pomegranates like bright green stone,
And barbed, barbed with a crown.
Oh, crown of spiked green metal
Actually growing!
Now in Tuscany,
Pomegranates to warm your hands at;
And crowns, kingly, generous, tilting crowns
Over the left eyebrow.
And, if you dare, the fissure!
Do you mean to tell me you will see no fissure?
Do you prefer to look on the plain side?{12}
For all that, the setting suns are open.
The end cracks open with the beginning:
Rosy, tender, glittering within the fissure.
Do you mean to tell me there should be no fissure?
No glittering, compact drops of dawn?
Do you mean it is wrong, the gold-filmed skin, integument, shown ruptured?
For my part, I prefer my heart to be broken.
It is so lovely, dawn-kaleidoscopic within the crack.
San Gervasio in Tuscany.

Amos 3
1  Hear this word that the LORD has spoken against you, children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying,

2  "You only have I known of all the families of the earth; therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.

3  Can two walk together unless they be agreed?

4  Will a lion roar in the forest when he has no prey? Will a young lion cry out of his den if he has caught nothing?

5  Will a bird fall into a trap on the ground, when there is no bait for it? Will a trap spring up from the ground, and nothing at all be caught?

6  If a ram's horn is blown in a city, will the people not also tremble? If there is a calamity in a city, has the LORD not also done it?

7  Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing unless He reveals His secret unto His servants the prophets.

8  The lion has roaredâ€"who will not fear? The Lord GOD has spokenâ€"who can but prophesy?

9  Make it heard at the palaces of Ashdod, and the palaces in the land of Egypt, and say, 'Gather yourselves on the mountains of Samaria, and behold the great tumults in its midst, and the oppressed within it,

10  For they do not know to do right,' says the LORD, 'those who store up violence and robbery in their palaces.' ”

11  Therefore thus says the Lord GOD, "An enemy! And he shall be all around the land; and he shall bring you down from your strength, and your palaces shall be plundered."

12  Thus says the LORD, "As the shepherd takes two legs out of the mouth of the lion, or a piece of an ear, so shall the children of Israel be taken outâ€"those who dwell in Samaria in the corner of a bed, and in Damascus on a couch.

13  Hear and testify in the house of Jacob," says the Lord GOD, the God of hosts,

14  "For in the day that I shall visit the transgressions of Israel on him, I will also visit the altars of Bethel. And the horns of the altar shall be cut off and shall fall to the ground.

15  And I will strike the winter house together with the summer house, and the houses of ivory shall perish. And the great houses shall be swept away," says the LORD.

Sumala ni Mayor Sara Duterte nga posibleng moabot pa sa duha o tulo ka tuig ang COVID-19, busa tambag niya sa mga Dabawenyo nga himuong produktibo ang higayon karong dunay 'stay at home' order.

"Dapat siguro hinumdomon sa mga tawo nga gitagaan sila og higayon nga magpuyo sa ilang balay, most of the time. And make sure kani nga time himuon nila productively ba. Ayuson nila ang mga kinahanglan ayuson sa balay, spend time and create activities with family, tabangan ninyo inyong anak sa online classes, create nurturing relationships. Kung kaniadto dili mo magkita, karon nagakita na mo kada adlaw.

So don't waste the opportunity nga gihatag sa inyo sa COVID nga magbuhat og better relationships with household members."

PUBLIC ADVISORY

Per DOTr Memorandum Circular 2020-014 dated 03 August 2020, ALL public transport passengers MUST wear FACE SHIELDS, apart from face masks, starting 15 August 2020.

This covers public transport passengers in the sectors of aviation, maritime, road, and railways.

The mandatory use of face shields intends to provide an additional and essential layer of protection for the riding public, in order to minimize the risk of contracting the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).

And as emphasized by Secretary Tugade, "No amount of protection is too much when it comes to HEALTH and SAFETY, especially that we are battling an invisible enemy."

Amos 2
1  Thus says the LORD, "For three transgressions of Moab, yea for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime.

2  But I will send a fire upon Moab, and it shall devour the palaces of Kerioth. And Moab shall die with great noise, with shouting, with the sound of a ram's horn.

3  And I will cut off the judge from its midst, and will slay all its princes with him," says the LORD.

4  Thus says the LORD, "For three transgressions of Judah, yea for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because they have despised the laws of the LORD, and have not kept His commandments. And their lies caused them to err, those after which their fathers walked.

5  But I will send a fire upon Judah, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem."

 6  Thus says the LORD, "For three transgressions of Israel, yea for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because they sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of sandals;

7  They trample the head of the poor into the dust of the earth, and turn aside the way of the meek. And a man and his father will go in to the same woman, to defile My holy name.

8  And beside every altar they lay themselves down upon garments taken in pledge, and they drink the wine of the condemned in the house of their god.

9  Yet I destroyed the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and whose strength was as the oaks; yet I destroyed his fruit from above and his roots from below.

10  Also I brought you up from the land of Egypt and led you forty years through the wilderness to possess the land of the Amorite.

11  And I raised up prophets from your sons and Nazarites from your young men. Is it not even so, O children of Israel?" says the LORD.

12  "But you gave the Nazarites wine to drink, and commanded the prophets, saying, 'Do not prophesy.'

13  Behold, I will press you down, as a cart full of sheaves is pressed down.

 14  Therefore the flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not strengthen his power, nor shall the mighty deliver his life;

15  Nor shall he who handles the bow stand. And the swift-footed shall not deliver himself; neither shall he that rides the horse deliver himself.

16  And the stout-hearted among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day," says the LORD.

MANILA, Philippines â€" TaskUs, a leading next-generation provider of customer experience and content moderation, continues to put its people’s health and safety first as it announces the extension of work-from-home (WFH) through the end of 2020 through a video posted on its Facebook page.

As soon as President Duterte imposed an Enhanced Community Quarantine over the entire Luzon on March 16, TaskUs Philippines immediately shifted to WFH while other companies remained business-as-usual. Bryce Maddock, TaskUs CEO and co-founder, said the decision to transition and stay WFH is part of their frontline-first culture.

“We want our employees to earn a living, but we also want to make sure they are safe,” Maddock shared. “Unless a critical program requires on-site support, we are going to stay WFH until the end of 2020 for all TaskUs sites except Taiwan since their government did not impose any lockdowns. This decision provides our Teammates with the ability to plan their lives between now and the end of the year. Our employees remain our top priority,” he added.

However, there are some exemptions. Less than 3% of TaskUs Philippines’ workforce may still be asked to return on-site due to security or technical requirements. The company has made additional investments to ensure expanded safety measures and protocols are in place to further safeguard people’s health.

“I think this pandemic has served a lesson not only to the BPO industry but to all industries. At TaskUs, COVID-19 was a chance to live by our core value and prove that we truly put our #PeopleBeforeProfits,” Maddock stated.

TaskUs has over 15,000 employees in the Philippines with sites located in Quezon City, BGC, Rizal, Bulacan, Cavite, Batangas, Clark, La Union, and Bohol.

Press Release
DOE Sec. Cusi Assures Enough Oil Supply Amidst Shell Refinery Operations Closure

TAGUIG CITY- Energy Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi today assured the public that the closure of Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation’s (PSPC) refinery operations will not affect the country’s oil supply.

He said Shell will continue to fill in their market share through the importation of refined products.

While branding the latest business development as “unfortunate,” Secretary Cusi stated he respects Shell management's decision.

“It is unfortunate that Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation (PSPC) had to permanently close its refinery operations in the country,” Secretary Cusi said.

He added that he "respect the decision of Shell management changing their oil downstream business model to adapt to the existing market/ economic situation".

Secretary Cusi issued the statement after Shell President and CEO Cesar Romero announced the termination of the company’s oil refining activities in its Tabangao facilities in Batangas due to impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr. Romero said the current situation makes it “no longer economically viable" for them to run the refinery.

With Shell’s announcement, the Department of Energy will closely monitor the conduct of a successful transition to a full import terminal operation and the impact of such transition to its employees.

Secretary Cusi also expressed concern on the plight of the workers that will be displaced because of the closure.

“I hope they will find employment with the other industry players,” he said.

After school activities and relationship building

After school activities are the rage of the day. With about $500 million invested in these programs and more than 10 million children attending them in America alone, the popularity of these activities cannot be overlooked. Everyone understands the need to develop new skills, gain more knowledge and keep the children safe when parents are working.

The most important factor in the success of any program is the
relationship between the children participating in the program and the
adult members who work with these children. Often, children may confide in
an adult member who is not a teacher. This kind of emotional interaction
is a must when children are struggling to make sense of the whirlpool of
emotions that assail them.

Direct contact with professionals can be an inspiring experience. Children
are very much impressed by the knowledge and experience of these adults.

Young people gain a lot of knowledge and experience when they deal with
experienced adults and older youth who serve as teachers or mentors in
these programs. These mentors are different from the teachers in the
school and children are more likely to draw inspiration from them.

After school activities that are managed professionally by people who are successful in their own fields of expertise will produce children who are
more enthusiastic and successful. Meaningful interaction with adults is a
learning experience in itself.

COVID-19 AID ROLLOUT SOLUTIONS PROPOSED

Two lawmakers have solutions to COVID-19 rollout difficulties

Agusan del Norte (1st District) Rep. Lawrence Fortun wants the DSWD Social Amelioration Program expanded to include security guards, college and DepEd scholars, kasambahays, cooperatives members, and DTI microlending beneficiaries.

ACT-CIS Party-list Rep. Jocelyn P. Tulfo suggests a formal Labor Department amnesty for all employers who avail of its COVID-19 one-time aid relief of P5,000 for their employees.

Fortun said the DSWD should use already existing databases for specific individual beneficiaries among the poor and lower middle income segments of the country's population. The lists he cited are the following:

1.  SSS-registered kasambahays;

2.  PNP SOSIA registry of licensed security guards;

3.  CHED, SUC and LUC enrollment lists of indigent and low-income students in public and private colleges;

4.  DepEd list of Education Service Contracting (ESC) voucher beneficiaries

5.  Cooperative Development Authority lists of low-income individual members of cooperatives; and

6.  DTI Small Business Corporation lists of microlending beneficiaries.

"I believe these databases are objective sources of names of citizens who are among the lower middle income households. These databases exist and have been vetted beforehand or have some means of sorting out target beneficiaries for other assistance programs," Fortun said.

The Agusan del Norte congressman noted, "the databases for the current  COVID-19 safety nets are not interfaced and therefore the DSWD, DOLE, DA, DOTr, and l agencies are having a difficult time knowing which families are getting cash aid over and over again."

"In the process, while some people receive from more, others may be deprived. The forms for the Social Amelioration Card were not distributed and used as planned," he also said.

Congressman Fortun agreed with Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III that "many employers have been unable, or are hesitant, to submit their payroll records because they feared the documents they submit could be used against them because those records would be proof they have not been complying with certain labor laws and standards.

Congresswoman Tulfo opined that the COVID-19 crisis "has exposed what many labor rights advocates have known for decades: most employers do not comply with the most basic labor standards on compensation and benefits."

"To effectively remedy this horrendous can of worms situation, I suggest to the DOLE, the Employees Compensation Commission, National Labor Relations Commission, and the National Wages and Productivity Commission that they formalize in writing some sort of clemency or amnesty, if it is within their executive authority to do so under their respective charters and our country's labor laws," Tulfo said.

"However, such amnesty or clemency should have strict provisions on rectification and compliance. For now, let us call this approach, Tabula Rasa, which means clean slate," Tulfo suggested.

She said DOLE should have "one minimum standard of electronic payroll for compliance of every single business entity of whatever type, be it a proprietorship, partnership, or corporation."

"This electronic payroll should be for all kinds of private sector employees: regular, probationary, contractual, contractors, subcontracted, and casuals. Moving forward, the electronic payroll should be a compliance monitoring tool of the DOLE and its bureaus enforcing various standards," Tulfo also said.

"The required DOLE electronic payroll should also be a requirement for business registration and renewal consistent with the Ease of Doing Business Act," Tulfo proposed. (END)

NEW ISLAMIC BANKING RULES ARE PRELUDE TO MINDANAO INVESTMENTS SURGE

"2020 will mark the start of a surge in finance and banking in Mindanao with Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas approval of initial regulations implementing the new Islamic Banking Law or Republic Act 11439," said House minority Rep. Lawrence Fortun of Agusan del Norte (1st District).

"With the new law and rules, the Islamic banks can soon reach out to the millions of 'unbanked' Filipinos. Most of the unbanked towns are in Mindanao," said the Mindanaoan solon from the CARAGA region, citing Bangko Sentral data. (http://www.bsp.gov.ph/banking/unbanked.pdf).

Fortun, a Member of the House Committee on Banks and Financial Intermediaries said,  "the BSP was swift and wise to approve the Islamic banking rules before yearend."

RA 11439 was signed into law last August 22.

"Foreign and local investors eyeing new investments in Islamic banking and finance now have the go-signal to move forward with their plans for Mindanao and cities where there are concentrations of Filipino Muslims and Muslim expatriates," Fortun said.

“RA 11439 is one significant legislative accomplishment for inclusive economy of the 17th Congress.”

"Due credit goes to the late BSP Governor Nestro Espenilla Jr. for initiating the measure and lobbying for its passage by the 17th Congress,” Fortun said. (END)

DFA, DOLE NEGOTIATORS SHOULD DEMAND BLOOD MONEY ASIDE FROM ARREST, PROSECUTION OF OFW’S KILLER IN KUWAIT

INVEST IN SAFE SPACES FOR OFWS IN SINGAPORE; EXIT NOW FROM HSW MARKET

I am deeply saddened by the death of two Filipinas very recently in Singapore in a car crash and the killing of another Filipina household service worker in Kuwait at the hands of her employer. My sincerest condolences to their grieving families and friends.

For our domestics in Singapore, our embassy must work with other institutions to find suitable safe spaces where thousands of Pinoys can spend their days off at no cost to the OFWs.

Certainly, there are still some suitable open spaces in Singapore where our embassy can facilitate some kind of a weekly Pinoy fiesta where cleanliness and orderliness shall be observed in keeping with Singapore’s laws and regulations. The point is our OFWs in Singapore should not spend their day-offs on sidewalks,  walkways, and corridors.

For the sensitive situation in Kuwait, applying the principle of reciprocity, our country should demand blood money from the Kuwaiti employer’s family aside from the expeditious prosecution and conviction of the killer.

Blood money they understand.  The bilateral agreement, that they do not understand. We should communicate with them in ways they can understand.

We should put an end to this continued disrespect of our so-called bilateral agreement which only our side has been religiously observing. This agreement has failed, time and again, to protect Filipino household service workers from being subjected to slave treatment by cruel employers.

EXIT OF OFWs FROM HOUSEHOLD SERVICES SECTOR

Our country should already depart from the HSW market. This practice and policy have created a very wrong impression for our OFWs. Household services overseas have been regarded as jobs for the unskilled and most of those employed in this sector are Filipinos. This we cannot allow to continue.

Most of our HSWs are skilled or very trainable and the DOLE, in cooperation with TESDA, should implement government-subsidized training programs to upgrade their skills for jobs in the hotel and tourism markets worldwide where work is dignified and decently compensated. Our HSWs deserve to be treated with dignity and humanely. It is time for our country to stop sending domestic workers abroad.

Also, many of the domestic workers are victims of illegal recruiters, most of whom now use social media.

Our appeal to the anti-cybercrime agencies, mayors, and governors is to do an all-out crack down on these human traffickers. Shut them down permanently. Arrest and prosecute them. The blood of our OFWs who suffered cry out for justice.

DEPT OF OFW

These latest tragedies in Kuwait and Singapore also remind us in Congress that we must swiftly approve HB 5832 creating the Department of Filipinos Overseas and Foreign Employment as soon as session resumes later this month.

The establishment of the department is for purposes of instituting bureaucratic efficiency by combining and streamlining the functions of different agencies to ensure the effective protection of the rights and welfare of OFWs and their deployment only for decent jobs abroad. (END)

KABAYAN SOLON PRODS DFA MAKE SURE KILLER OF OFW IN KUWAIT IS PROSECUTED

"Our government must provide effective legal representation for the family of the domestic helper against the murderous employer in Kuwait. DFA should employ legal experts to pursue the case and ensure prosecution of the suspect," said KABAYAN Party-list Rep. Ron P. Salo, one of the authors of HB 5832 creating the Department of Filipinos Overseas and Foreign Employment.

HB 5832 provides P5 billion to the Assistance to Nationals (ATN) Fund for assistance, including legal aid, to Filipinos Overseas in distress situations.

Salo asked the “DFA to engage a battery of lawyers and ensure appropriate legal representation in all jurisdictions where there are OFWs, giving priorities to areas where there is high incidence of violence against OFWs."

"Moving forward, DOLE must develop new markets in jurisdictions where there is high respect for human rights and where our OFWs, particularly our domestic helpers, will be treated with respect and dignity. Train domestic helpers for other skills so they won’t have to work as DH where they are more prone to abuse, or worse, death," he added.

"Long-term, more job opportunities must be created in the country so Filipinos don’t have to work abroad," Salo added. (END)

STRONG DIGITAL CAREER SYSTEM FOR THE PANDEMIC NEW NORMAL

With further reopening of the economy, less travel restrictions, and the multimodal ways of learning of schools, I am pushing for creating now a strong digital career system.

To further promote digital careers in Mindanao, I am supporting the thrust of MSU-IIT to build its own data center and technology innovation facilities. This multi-year project will create needed digital careers for Mindanaoans.

For the digital economy we need, I filed House Bill 7048 (National Digital Careers Act) and House Bill 7049 (National Digital Transformation Act).

Our country urgently needs these two measures to become laws so we can cope with the new normal challenges up ahead.

Our country's technology colleges, like the MSU Iligan Institute of Technology, can serve as the hubs for digital careers.

The COVID-19  pandemic has forced our country to make our digital economy stronger.  We were fortunate to have a strong and growing BPO sector. We should strengthen the BPO industry with better infrastructure and a steady supply of digital career specialists.

Iligan City is a major education hub of Mindanao. Thousands of Mindanaoans come to Iligan to study at MSU-IIT and other schools in our city.

HB 7048 and HB  7049 serve as House versions of bills originally filed by Senator Sonny Angara as Senate Bills 1469 and 1470 respectively. (END)

SHUT DOWN OF ABS-CBN WORSENS COVID-19 SPREAD

The shutdown of ABS-CBN is contributing to the aggravation of the COVID-19 crisis in the country. When a large part of our population is deprived of access to information, the more difficult and problematic our efforts at curbing the spread of the disease become. The denial of the network’s franchise sealed NTC’s  shut down order against the network and will now cut off a major source of information of millions of Filipinos who depend on ABS-CBN tv and radio programs for their news.

That is the reality on the ground. Only 55% of Filipinos have smartphones and only 4 million Filipinos have broadband connections for full access to news on the internet and social media.

There is also a language barrier. Most of the COVID-19 information is in English and Filipino. Few and far between are information in Cebuano, Waray, Bicol, and Arabic

One of the features of the anti-COVID-19 measures in Regions 1 and 2 is the pervasive use of Ilocano. They were effective there because they communicated in the language almost everybody there could understand.

ABS-CBN News has regional news on radio and tv. This is one of the network's strengths. But because they are off the air, TV news and public affairs programs in local regional languages have nearly vanished.

It is regrettable that this unwarranted shutdown happened at a time of indispensable need to reach all our people to disseminate useful information and guidance in our war against COVID-19. (END)

MINORITY SOLON SAYS HOUSE UNLIKELY TO PASS ANTI-POLITICAL DYNASTY BILL

What are the chances of a political dynasty bill getting passed in the House? I don’t want to be so pessimistic, but I am afraid the song Mona Lisa has the answer.  The bill may just lie there and die there. (https://genius.com/Nat-king-cole-mona-lisa-lyrics )

While House Bill No. 110, the anti-political dynasty bill I authored, is languishing in the Committee, I am still hoping the measure will eventually merit the approval of our colleagues. Data shows, however, that the prospects are not very bright. No less than 70% of our members come from political dynasties.

It is a major mandate of Congress to pass laws that enable the enforcement of non-self-executing provisions of our Constitution. The political dynasty provision is one of them.  Article II Section 26 very clearly states: “The State shall guarantee equal access to public service and prohibit political dynasty as defined by law.”

It is regrettable that this important provision of the Constitution that is critical to leveling the playing field in our electoral processes, ensuring checks and balance in governance, and further strengthening our democracy, has been ignored and set aside for the last 33 years.

I would like to still believe the passage of an anti-political dynasty law may be a mountain to climb, but not impossible. We know that the Senate is also replete with members coming from established dynasties, but in 2018, its electoral reforms committee approved a bill banning political dynasties.

Thirteen committee members signed the report.  That is already a majority of the entire Senate membership.

In the House, a less strict anti-political dynasty bill was approved by the Committee on Suffrage in the 16th Congress, although did not reach voting on 2nd reading.

These were the country's best attempts so far at enabling the anti-political dynasty provision of the Constitution. (END)

SONA AGENDA:  MASS TESTING, RESCUE OF SMALL BUSINESSES

[The COVID-19 pandemic will of course be the dominant issue at the SONA on Monday]

I will support targeted funding for mass testing and for more contact tracers in the provinces. But here in Metro Manila, where there is clustering of coronavirus spread, contact tracing should take the back seat to strict community quarantine measures.

What is important is following the protocols. No one should be sent home for quarantine. Basta nag-positive sa rapid bring to a facility right away while waiting for the confirmatory RT-PCR test results. Ang daming hospitals and even DOH is encouraging home quarantine and this is very dangerous.

It is now quite abundantly clear that the DSWD has performed poorly as regards the Social Amelioration Program. We are quite disappointed with the DSWD on the SAP cash aid. Pinaasa sa wala ang milyung-milyong Pilipino.

Now, we must help the small businesses recover. Congress must approve a substantial rescue package for micro, small and medium enterprises. The balance sheets and income statements of the big corporations can absorb the blows of the pandemic, but the MSMEs have been crippled and many have shut down. They are the ones who need rescuing.

I acknowledge the growing frustration among our citizens because of the rising numbers of COVID-19 cases--confirmed, probable, and suspect--and the spread of the coronavirus to the provinces because of the stranded people being sent home and the repatriated OFWs. It is necessary to acknowledge this glaring reality because denying it only serves to further stoke the anger of the people.

The IATF decision to require motorcycle barriers is a mistake. They should humbly admit the mistake. The motorcycle manufacturers and mechanical engineers have already spoken out clearly against the barriers. It is time to stop its implementation.

To slow down the spread of COVID-19 in the provinces, it is but right that the mayors and governors must protect their constituents from COVID-19. The middle ground for this is the rapid deployment or building of quarantine facilities that are isolated but accessible from the airports and seaports, so the stranded people and OFWs need not be brought through the town centers or near any populated areas.
