Truth In Love
« on: February 10, 2013, 10:07:08 AM »
Rather, living the truth in love, we should grow in every way into him who is the head, Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, with the proper functioning of each part, brings about the body's growth and builds itself up in love.

-Ephesians 4:15-16

Truth in love?  Was St. Paul quoting a romance novel?  No.  The love he is speaking of is the love we have for our fellow man, especially within the Church itself.  Strengthening the body of the Church, then, requires loving one another.

When conditioning our physical bodies, we perform a number of exercises that will push the limits of our strength and endurance.  Over time, this will help us build more muscle and a stronger skeletal system.  In the same way, we can strengthen the Church through the exercise of love.

Physical exercises mimic the actual muscle movements used in other activities, preparing the body for whatever it may face.  Spritiually speaking, we need to prepare our hearts and souls for the same thing.  Our exercise of love within the Church prepares us for loving those outside of the Church.  Loving one another helps us to love others even more.

So where does truth come into all of this?  It is the purpose of building our spiritual muscle.  Living the truth requires strength to withstand the false teachings of the world.  If we do not hold on tightly to the truth, we will quickly fall to the lies that come at us from every direction.

By holding tightly to the truth in love, we are building the Church, the body of Christ.  Before we can love the world, we must learn to love our fellow Christians and Catholics.  Then, united together, we can love the rest of the world in much greater ways.
