On Tuesday, NFA discovered 100 sacks of Chinese rice being sold at Cartimar Market in Pasay for P75 to P80 per sack. Months ago, NFA also discovered 8,000 sacks of rice in the same market during a surveillance.

Chinese rice is easier to spot--it is rounder and glossier than the locally-produced grains. NFA personnel bought samples of the rice from different stalls to determine if it has plastic mixed with it.

NFA clarified that it has not issued any permits to import rice from China. But if the discovered sacks of rice in Cartimar belongs to the batch auctioned by Bureau of Customs last October 2014, it can still be sold. These sacks of smuggled rice were seized by the Customs in February 2014 in Paranaque.

Stall owner Ricardo Jopongco said a Chinese agent sells the rice for P1,300 per sack.

He said he is not aware that he might be selling smuggled rice.

"Hindi ko naman alam, tatlong buwan na akong binabagsakan ng ahente ko na Chinese," he said.

If proven that the Chinese rice is smuggled, NFA said there is a possibility that fake rice can enter the country.

"NFA is making preventive actions towards fake Chinese rice, for several months already we've been doing surveillance with the presence of Chinese rice. No permits are given to China, very suspicious po ang Chinese rice," said Dalisay.

Dalisay has ordered all NFA personnel to intensify market inspection and even in ports to monitor the presence of Chinese rice and fake rice.

Criminal and administrative cases will be filed against those who imported the Chinese rice with fines ranging from P4,000 to P8,000 or six years imprisonment.

MANILA - The National Food Authority (NFA) is having difficulties tracing the origin of the alleged "fake" rice from China bought by a family in Davao.

The synthetic rice was reported to have a styrofoam-like substance.

NFA submitted a sample of the rice to Food Development Center scientists to determine if there is indeed plastic mixed with the rice, but the sample was too small to come up with a full laboratory test result.

NFA Administrator Renan Dalisay said his office will need at least a kilo of the rice in question. NFA personnel still cannot pinpoint where the rice was bought.

"Kung makuha natin 'yung raw, 'yung bigas mismo at hindi 'yung cooked…Binili sa isang canteen luto na. Dahil binili ito ng luto na, tini-trace na po namin kung saan kinuha ng canteen ang Chinese rice, kung saan nanggaling Dine-deny naman po at nung in-inspect naman namin ang supply nila, genuine ang rice nila," said Dalisay.

Initial results showed that the rice might be mixed with corn, but Dalisay said the study has yet to be completed.

"Hindi pa rin naman final 'yun, kailangan pa malaman kung may foreign substance na hindi edible," he said.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) â€" The National Food Authority (NFA) said on Tuesday (June 30) that it is still confirming reports of fake rice allegedly made of potatoes, sweet potatoes, and plastic in the Philippine market.

The samples submitted to the agency are still undergoing laboratory testing.

Samples of alleged fake rice from Davao have been brought to the NFA Food Development Center (NFA-FDC) in Taguig for testing.

However, in order for the results to be conclusive, at least one kilogram of uncooked rice must be subjected to scientific testing.

"Scientists are having difficulty getting a conclusive result because of the small quantity of cooked rice,” said Administrator Renan Dalisay.

Dalisay emphasized that the public's safety is the main concern after the reports of alleged synthetic rice came out.

NFA conducted a surprise inspection of public markets in Metro Manila on Tuesday to check on the reported presence of suspected fake or plastic rice from China.

Should the public encounter any suspected plastic rice, the NFA encouraged people to report it through its hotline number 0906-4363133.

Two days after the Supreme Court of the United States delivered a dramatic ruling on same-sex marriage, homosexuals and lesbians participated in the traditional parade on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, where they were met by the haredi and Mexicans demonstrators.

The protestors, who are affiliated with the Jewish Political Action Committee (JPAC), carried signs reading, "God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve" and "Judaism prohibits homosexuality."

Some physicists actually believe that the universe we live in might be a hologram.

The idea isn't that the universe is some sort of fake simulation out of The Matrix, but rather that even though we appear to live in a three-dimensional universe, it might only have two dimensions. It's called the holographic principle.

The thinking goes like this: Some distant two-dimensional surface contains all the data needed to fully describe our world â€" and much like in a hologram, this data is projected to appear in three dimensions. Like the characters on a TV screen, we live on a flat surface that happens to look like it has depth.

It might sound absurd. But if when physicists assume it's true in their calculations, all sorts of big physics problems â€" such as the nature of black holes and the reconciling of gravity and quantum mechanics â€" become much simpler to solve. In short, the laws of physics seem to make more sense when written in two dimensions than in three.

"It's not considered some wild speculation among most theoretical physicists," says Leonard Susskind, the Stanford physicist who first formally defined the idea decades ago. "It's become a working, everyday tool to solve problems in physics."

But there's an important distinction to be made here. There's no direct evidence that our universe actually is a two-dimensional hologram. These calculations aren't the same as a mathematical proof. Rather, they're intriguing suggestions that our universe could be a hologram. And as of yet, not all physicists believe we have a good way of testing the idea experimentally.

Xipolitakis is an actress and model who is famous for regularly posting seductive photos on her social media. She has been barred from flying with the airline for five years for her part in the incident.

This isn’t the first time a pilot landed in hot water after snapping photos in the cockpit. Earlier this month, a Japan Airlines pilot was suspended from his position after he took a selfie in the cockpit with a flight attendant.

And back in March, the internet went into a tizzy after a woman posted photos sitting in the cockpit during her flight from Taipei to Hong Kong. The Civil Aviation Department requested that the airline provide an explanation for the incident.

In the world of aviation, on-the-job selfies are the quickest way to find yourself in the unemployment line.

Two pilots were fired after taking photos with an actress in the cockpit during a flight on Tuesday from Buenos Aires to Rosario. The woman, Vicky Xipolitakis, shared the photos with her 405,000 followers on Twitter. 

In the photos, the trio looks like they’re having a great time â€" smiling widely as they pose in the cockpit. The problem is that one of the photos was clearly taken while the plane was in-flight, a fact that didn’t impress airline management.

Mariano Recalde is the president of Aerolineas Argentinas and told the local news that the pilots in-air selfies put other lives at risk. “As soon as we became aware of the situation, we dismissed the pilots,” said Recalde. “They are two irresponsible people.”

Scientists think that a supermassive black hole at the center of this dusty galaxy is busily consuming gaseous material in a colossal growth spurt. As the gas is dragged toward the black hole, it heats up and blasts out visible, ultraviolet and X-ray light. The dust swaddling the galaxy absorbs this light and heats up, radiating longer-wavelength, infrared light. The dust also blocks our view of shorter, visible-light wavelengths, while letting longer-wavelengths through. This is similar to what happens when sunlight streams through our dusty atmosphere, producing a brilliant red sunrise.

In fact, more than 99 percent of the light escaping from this dusty galaxy is infrared. As a result, it is much harder to see with optical telescopes.

Because light from the galaxy hosting the black hole has traveled 12.5 billion years to reach us, astronomers are seeing the object as it was in the distant past. During this epoch, galaxies would have been more than five times closer together than they are now, as illustrated in the background of the artist's concept. This is due to the expansion of space -- space itself and the galaxies in it are stretching apart from each other at ever-increasing speeds.

Toe wrestling traces its roots to 1976 when Staffordshire pub landlord George Burgess sought to find a new sport for Brits to dominate, according to the Bentley Brook Inn where the championship took place.

"I just love the fact that this is the one sport that England always win at, we get hammered at everything else," Nash said.

"My technique ... is to hurt the first person that comes into the ring with me: hurt them bad and terrify everyone else."

There are two participants in each bout. With their feet on a small square ring on the floor, the competitors begin by locking their big toes together, before battling arm-wrestling style to drive their opponent's foot to the ground. Toe inspections are a must and mixed sex matches are not allowed.

"There have been some dirty toed tactics, 'flicking off' is one of them," organizer Edward Allington said.

"If you know you're going to lose, if you pull your toe away then it's difficult for the referee to decide if it's accidental or deliberate."

Nash beat Michael "Grimbo" Grimmett to claim his 12th World Title. On the women's side, a competitor known as "Tracy Tippy Toe" took the title.

LONDON (Reuters) - At a pub in rural England, Alan "Nasty" Nash is exercising his toes before he gets into the fighting ring. Draped in a Union Jack flag, the competitor is preparing for the most brutal of bouts to retain his title -- World Toe Wrestling Champion.

Beside him, fellow contestants are having their bare feet massaged before their matches begin.

The Derbyshire village of Fenny Bentley in northern England hosted the World Championship for Toe Wrestling at the weekend in a competition that drew male and female fighters as well as spectators of all ages for some serious toe-tussling.

Month-long operation

Including the June 1 seizure, this month Chinese customs officials have seized more than 100,000 tonnes of smuggled frozen meat worth almost $500 million in crackdowns across 14 provinces and detained 21 smuggling groups, Xinhua reported.

The China Daily report quoted unnamed experts as saying that, as long as frozen meat shows no signs of thawing, customers can't tell fresh meat from meat that is decades old.

Smuggled meat products are not inspected and may contain viruses that can cause serious illnesses, Yang Bo, the director of the anti-smuggling arm of Changsha Administration of Customs, was quoted by the China Daily as saying.

"To save costs, smugglers often hire ordinary vehicles instead of refrigerated ones. So the meat has often thawed out several times before reaching customers," Yang added.

The China Daily said smugglers buy meat cheaply overseas and ship it to China via Hong Kong and Vietnam.

Latest in line of food scandals

China has experienced a string of stomach-churning food scandals in recent years.

The most high-profile recent case involved a U.S.-owned meat factory operating in China that was accused of selling out-of-date and tainted meat to clients including McDonald's, Starbucks, KFC and Pizza Hut chains.

(CNN) Some 800 tonnes of smuggled frozen meat have been seized by Chinese authorities, including one batch dating from the 1970s, state media reported.

The meat was bound for restaurants, retailers and supermarkets in Hunan province, where it was found, and other Chinese provinces and major cities, according to a report from Xinhua, China's state news agency, on Tuesday.

The meat, which included poultry and beef, was confiscated on June 1 and was worth 10 million yuan ($1.6 million), the English-language China Daily said.

Decades-old meat

Some packages were rotten and others were around 40 years old -- packed and stamped at the height of China's Cultural Revolution.

"The products fully filled an entire compartment. It was really smelly, and I nearly threw up when I opened the door," the China Daily quoted Zhang Tao, a local official, as saying.

CNN contacted customs authorities in Changsha, the provincial capital of Hunan, which said that local media reports on the meat seizures were correct but declined to give further details.
