Dark recesses? More of the same, more of the same. As to the mood of the shopping, the sentiment of pungent cavernous malls is carefully noted, thank you... ;D

That is true even our language can be harsh to non-Filipinos. Even the Arabic language in Southern Philippines is very harsh to the Ilongos in Central Visayas.

However, I would say German language may have some hard impact on the listener because its heavy and the accents are really strong. It sounded lyrical, sounding like someone is gargling a mouth full of marbles. I believe the German language might sound a little heavy and thick to other foreign countries.

german language sure sounds "thick" and "heavy" to other ears, especially those used to listening to english such as american english (americans often describe german as "thick and accented").  to think that both german and english languages belong to the germanic language grouping.

excuse me, i do not mean to correct anyone here... just my two-cents' worth, this.   accents that refer to how a language is spoken cannot be strong (or weak), they can only be different.  'speaking with an accent' is often used to describe anyone who veers away from the standard pronunciation of a language.  and this may include accent in terms of phonology.  i think some americans also speak as if their mouths are full of marbles.

may i know where in southern philippines is arabic spoken?

short of saying that the male of the species are the creators, which doesn't offer peace nor a glimmer of unerstanding, dear bai hubag, take note that in plumbing the heart of darkness those males must have gone crazy shopping first in various dark recesses.

in the late 1980s, after the current mayor became post-edsa oic by virtue of his blood relations with emmanuel pelaez, local pundits had come up with an anecdote, bohol-style, about 3 candidates for congress who were said to be all difficult to vote for because one was 'no talk' (agana, who couldn't speak the dialect), another was 'no walk' (lapez, who was on a wheelchair), and the other was 'putok' (lim, who was reportedly involved in a shooting incident).

it looks like that early in our mayor's political career, something was already afoot.  we need not wonder about hoodlums in our midst now.

German is probably not the harshest-sounding language ONLY Hitler can make that a harshest sounding language.I've seen  a lot of nazi movies,Hitler had a harshest sounding voice.

and, take note, the probability is high that the movies you've watched were made in hollywood, by americans or u.s.-based film artists.  that says a lot about how other people and their language are portrayed.

#46124

if what is meant by language in this thread is the language spoken by a people, then there is no such thing as a harsh language.  any spoken language becomes harsh to the ears only for those who either simply do not understand a word or are not used to the intonation pattern specific to the language.

but if language here refers to expressions (or expletives for that matter), by jove, there's a lot to choose from out there.

as sure as i'm sitting here, yes, they owe us and not the other way around.  by the way, can anybody win in bohol without buying votes?  of course, they won't call it vote-buying because there's a law against it.  i heard one euphemism for it is 'representation'.  a rose by any other name...

bitaw, he can be an advocate for no to political dynasty but wala na niya gibuhat even before. ngano man? simple lang, ang mga ally niya are members of such dynasties. kinsa man prominent? take a look at GMA, the president who ran for congress seat para kalikay sa mga kaso.

if ever this would be his last term, i hope he would to do it right and will not be just another member of the congress' numbers game.

ugh, this is an even more in-depth info.  thanks, jas.  this reminds me of a story told in passing about the aumentado son at the ubay hospital that has something to do with getting something not above board.  well, the price public figures pay includes intrigues rubbing off on their sons and daughters, by fair means or foul.

let's then wait and see anyway if the soon-to-be-congressman-again could do this one heroic act of advocating anti-dynasty laws against all odds.  let's see if he could extricate himself from the vampires of congress by putting to good use his slippery abilities.

p.s.  if the governed, like us, sound demanding, it's only because we voted these officials into office to represent us, right?

aleikum salaam, cowboy.  leadership matters as examples matter.  venancio inting i believe was the mayor all the way to the 1970s.  mine is just anecdotal.  i was hardly in tagbilaran myself.

part of the city's lore is that he was one mayor who was able to clip the wings of an abusive clan of 'warlords' (bohol's past version of the duranos of cebu, the espinozas of masbate, the crisologos of ilocos and, to a certain extent, the ampatuans of maguindanao) that had terrorized the city.

if tagbilaran's crime incidence continues to rise during the current mayor's watch, he may go down in the city's history as the mayor who encouraged crime by fielding shady characters on government pay to keep the peace.  his own personal peace.

there just seems to be some progeny who inherited the ability to get other strange sources of income but not the political acumen, again according to the story.
#46147
he would be in a position to do this because there is no one else in the family who's getting into politics, unlike cajes, inc.  the aumentado children, according to the story, just want all of them to migrate to the u.s.  (rumor-mongering!?)

PROLOGUE

I will soon reach the port in a few days over a month from now. Port June 30 is where I will be disembarking from this ship on which I have been sailing for almost six years.

The journey has been exciting and challenging. Just as what sailors experienced, we went through calm seas and raging waves. Fair weather and stormy days. Our Captain steered the ship well. We stayed true as we manned our stations.

Port June 30 is where I get off. So, too, is our Captain who is taking a new assignment (actually he's going back to his old job which he labored on for nine years). A few of the crew will be getting off as well. "Tom Jones." That's what they call us. This play of words always brings a smile to our face.

I decided to share, if my time permits, some of my daily grind before reaching port... the things I'm doing in the few remaining days as Provincial Administrator of Bohol.

To many of us, Port June 30 is not the destination. It's just a next stop as we gear up for the next leg of the journey.

your journey must have been great, calm seas, raging waves, flowing waters, currents, tides high and low, siren calls and all.  may your next port of call be as replete with adventures as this one that you're saying fare thee well to.

bon voyage! :)

have seen that myself, sadly.  tawag nako anang mga klaseha 'walking pawnshops' or 'gumagapang na ahensya' or 'limbarok nga tigpatanto'.

if it's a creative criticism, the kind that tends to help rather than merely disparage, then i would think of ways to correct myself or my mistake or extend my apologies if need me.

if it's just a putdown, i simply ignore and think less of the critic whose agenda could be harmful to my health.

discrimination is another story, though.
#46164
truly deadma.  who cares, really?  it's easy to ignore them as long as their expression of dislike of me is not harmful to my health (i.e. no hate campaign with lies enough to turn even my own friends against me.)  otherwise, i can fight to the death. ;D

good luck.

Don't worry we weren't asking for your vision to be 20/20. Just am maintaining this thread as a beard grower's advice to fellow beard growers. Thanks.

No one is stroking any ego, except for our beards. :)

Back to the subject matter.

I do notice that the beard look is coming back into the fold. Perhaps not so much in the Philippines or Asia as it is not popular there, the clean cut look is preferred in Asia-Pacific, i notice.

you might just be surprised if behind the facial veil of my avatar is a great moustache, 20/20 vision or no.

anyway, whoever erased the pic that bai hubag posted in this thread had caused other readers to miss a sample of a great beard, which should have been part of this advice thread by a beard guru.  (fortunately, those interested can go to another thread where it also appears.  i just came across it in 'your last word is mine'.)

by the way, middle eastern men have great beards.  try taking a tip or two from them as well.

p.s. sans the ego, duha ka tipasi maayo i-stroke sa bungot. ;D  kun mokatol, mao pod ang gamiton pag-ibot.

thank you very much for this.  it helps greatly just knowing that this is common.  (hehe,  shared pain is less pain?)

i've been on back pain woes for over six years.  rehab and acupuncture helped, but i have to be careful in everything i do now.  it's not easy. i used to be a 100-meter runner.  now i can't, or shouldn't, even jog.

yes, a little carelessness on my part might get me a permanent metal brace in lieu of real bone.  that's scary.  imagine passing through airport security and you're iron man.

the bright side:  i'm more poised now.

i lean towards oldies, the kind of songs my father sang (frank sinatra et al) and which michael buble had revived.  a smattering of new hits throughout the years, including broadway and movie hit songs, are just as pleasing.  i just have to play some classics some time in the early evening, preferring vivaldi.  i can't stand rock.  strangely, i like gregorian chants.  they're like feathers floating in the wind.
