Help needed with Cebuano words used in fishing
« on: August 02, 2008, 02:59:50 PM »

I am translating another documentary on the life of fishermen in the Philippines to be shown on Japanese TV. I'm stumped by the following words/phrases.

pukot--fishing net  (ok?)

bobo--

manarap ug bat--

I'll request for more as the need arises.

Korek ang Pukot is fishing net.

Wa ko kahibaw anang "manarap ug bat".

Bobo can be like watering the plants.  In Cebuano or Bisaya, "mag bo-bo ug tanum".

Sorry Sir Bene. Maybe I will understand more if you use it in a sentence. ;D

Nah maoy gidangat ko ani. Paluma-luma ug tabag hehehe..

Salamat, Japs.

Thanks.

I think bat is sea cucumber!

The word "bubo" can be a different way of fishing. But I think what Musiclover's explanation is pretty close. Naa may klase nga pagpangisda nga manaktak or kanang ilang pakuratan ang mga isda ug ayha pa nila suyuron.

Manarap ug bat is mangsuyod or manuyod... Mura'g korek napod si Musiclover. Mananagat siguro ni siya ay sa atoa. Kahibaw man ani nga mga terms.  ;D

Salamat kaayo! Kalawom sa imong Bisaya, musiclover0526. If our words tell who we are, kalawom pud sa imong pagkatawo.

I am translating another documentary on the life of fishermen in the Philippines to be shown on Japanese TV. I'm stumped by the following words/phrases.

pukot--fishing net  (ok?)

bobo--

manarap ug bat--

I'll request for more as the need arises.

When I was in the Philippines, I must admit I'm an ignoramus to fishing terms. However, when I went to this place, I was surprised how the Indian and Arabic fish pedlers knows fish names in tagalog or bisayan, better than I am.

So, this challenged me to learn. Thanks to Noy Oki, my former co-worker, a born fisherman and a relative of Blue Angel.

Perhaps this could help Benne:
pukot - fishing net  (ok?)

bobo - Fish Trap made of wire mesh. There's a small hole where fishes could get in, but could not get out.

manarap ug bat - Bat means sea cocumber. Manarap is catching with a net. This is wrong and non existent. Sea cocumbers are being picked by hand and not by net.

Tuy - a fish being twined by the net.

Tamba - making loud splash to scare the fish or drive them to the direction of the net.

Mata sa pokot - size of net mesh. The legal minimum size for commercial fishing should be 2 inches so that the small or juvenile fishes could escape.

Bunsod or Payao - Fish pen usually built in shallow waters or lagoon.

Mano' - Catching fish at night using a torch or kerosene lamp.

Manawm - Catching fish by diving using 'pana' (spear).

Destructive fishing:
Lagtang - using poison such as cyanide or a kind of poisonous plant.

Dinamita - using dynamite

Moro ami - Destroying corals (fish habitat) to drive out the fishes and when the fishes are exposed, it is followed by a pokot (net).

Bobo (Fish Trap) - a passive fishing gear usually made of bamboo lattice net and frame which has an opening at each end, which fish can enter but may not leave. It is used to house and entrap fish which move into the trap to hide using fish or frog meat as bait;

Fish Corral or bungsod-a stationary wire trap devise used to intercept and capture fish, consisting of rows or stakes of bamboo, palm brava or other materials fenced with split bamboo matting or wire entrance with difficult exit, with or without leaders to direct the fish to the catching chamber or purse;

Payao -a fish aggregating device consisting of a floating raft anchored by a weighted line with suspended materials such as palm fronds to attract pelagic and schooling species common in deep waters;

Puede gam-an ug animation nga isda nga murag dagway ni Sean Connery (isog ug dagway nga isda, talakitok) ug Catherine Zeeta Jones (slim nga isda siguro bangsi or mansi).

I am translating another documentary on the life of fishermen in the Philippines to be shown on Japanese TV. I'm stumped by the following words/phrases.

pukot--fishing net  (ok?)

bobo--fishcage

manarap ug bat--

I'll request for more as the need arises.

This really looks yummy. By the way, a Japanese client once sent me a box of live sea cucumbers and I just threw them away because I didn't know how to prepare them. Unsaon man diay pagluto o  pagkilaw sa bat? Unsa may angay tangtangon, kay nahadlok ko basig murag butete nga makahilo if you don't remove specific parts.

Sir Bene, I think binayo is like a big mortar and pestle that we used to pound rice to remove the husk and nowadays rice miller is used. We also use Bayo or Binayo to make a nilusak na saging. I believe Bayo is also called Lugsong.

Let's wait what other peeps explanation for Binayo. I might have different understanding of Binayo. ;D

Thanks for being always the first on the rescue, Japz. I'll wait for what the others have to say. Hope you're OK, what with the government retrenchment plans thereabouts.

You're welcome Sir Bene. I'm trying kay I'm challenged man gud pod kay kung dili man gud pirme bitaw ma hisgutan ang mga terms sa ato ilabina nga naa ta sa gawas, medyo dugay dugay pod natong hinuktok and trying to remember unsa gani ni unsa gani to nga word buot pasabot. ;D

Ako man lang pod kaugalingon ako i-challenge. ;D

Regarding what's happening here in California, for now we're okay. We'll just have to be positive all the time and of course trust God that everything's gonna be okay.

Sir Ben, murder-on pa nimo una.  You'd have to squeeze out all the innards of the sea cucumber.  At first you'll get a glue-like excretion and then brown stuff will come out.  That's when you know that you've got its internal organs out.  When it's all flat, slice it up and wash, preferably with sea water.  Then prepare as desired.

Paul mura man ka ug si Emirel Lagassi ani paminawon! hahahhahaha

Is binayo  dynamite/

Binayo- (kote) an oblong shaped wooden toy with string to spin (Biyo) means to turn around; Guinabiyo-(verb) turning.

Yo-yo - a wooden yoyo is used by our ancestor as a weapon to attacked maurading tribes. A good yoyo spinner can hit a man on his head from a distance of 3 to 5 meters.

By the way, the title of this TV documentary is "Living as a child in Asia."

I am not even halfway through this project, but I could forsee that this will be a realistic portrayal of the lives of coastal children in Bohol.

This gives us a first-person perspective of poverty among marginalized fisherman in poor Asian localities. Children have an awareness of the illegality of dynamite fishing, but they seem to have a scripted justification of why their fathers are doing it. Luoy baya pud kaayo.

Sige man hisgutan ang Talibon.

Bobo, I think, is technically a fish aggregating device. It's usually made of palm leaves and bamboo to attract the fish to gather around.
