Awit Sa Bohol – Written on original Visayan Sript (Bisaya Hervas)

Proem: Bisaya Hervás is based on a type face that appeared in 1787 in an Italian work by Lorenzo Hervás y Pandura, Saggio prattico delle lingue con prolegomeni e una raccolta di Orazioni Domincale in più di trecento lingue e dialetti (Practical examples of languages with prologues and a collection of the Lord's prayer in over 300 languages and dialects). The samples used to create this font are from two Austrian books that reproduced this Cebuano version of the baybayin, Illustrirte Geschichte der Schrift (The Illustrated History of Writing) by Karl Faulman, 1880 and Sprachenhalle (Hall of Languages) by Alois Auer, 1847.

According to history, kita mga Pintados or mga native nga puno sa tatoo as discribed by Legaspi.

Mr. Ferniz, how does Brando Lorenzo Lucino look like in this script?

The form of script looks like the indigenous writing styles of Java.
Very interesting, thank you for sharing this.

So was pre-hispanic Philippines fluent in this script? How was the literacy rate?

Jun, I just found this today afternoon from my old archives. Just trying some experiment on Awit sa Bohol. I found these fonts in the Tabaco web site last 2005.

Lorenzo, the font was loaded in my office computer and tomorrow morning, I will send you on this same thread your name using these fonts. Actually it is very easy and rules are basic.

I believed literacy rate during pre-hispanic was 100% as they are able to write tatoos in thier bodies.

Yes Lindy, this is the Bohol Hymn.

Your question is coincidental because the arranger of this song is Lindy Ganade.

Lorenzo,
You may learn more about this system of writing from the tabaco family web site. Below are the links for your convenience.
Web site: http://www.tabacofamily.com/
To down load font and tutorial: http://www.tabacofamily.com/images/new/bisherv.zip

There is a sample writing there and it reads: Dayan Kira, probably one of the younger generations of d' Tabaco.

It is very simple Lorenzo. It took me just minutes after reading the tutorial before I start translating the Bohol Hymn.

Lindy, the Ganade's are a family of musicians and Ms. Lindy Ganade was our music teacher in HSS Elem. School. Her brother's daughter Suzanne is my classmate and we are also neighbors in Cogon, Tagbilaran City.

Sir, the provincial hymn was originally written in English by Justino "Ning" Romea of Loon as the Bohol Hymn.  I was told that in the 1960's (although it could be earlier) a competition was held for the Cebuano-Visayan version of the song.  Ma'am Maxelende Ganade, then a high school student, won the competition.  Concordantly, the Visayan title was "Awit sa Bohol."

Anyway, Sir, can I also ask you for a rendering of my name: Paul Joseph Vistal?  Daghang salamat daan. :D

Paul, the fonts are installed in my office computer and probably by tomorrow, I am able to give you.

Since we can not select fonts in a forum, so I have to rasterize it into a picture file otherwise it will appear as English fonts if I post or write it directly.

It's really nice to learn again our lost system of writing.

Thank you Mike sa imong pag appreciate sa akong experiment.

Ako pod nga gi translate imong ngan dire.

Mr. Ferniz,

Salamat Kaayo for the link, I'll begin studying this beautiful and historic writing system.

What  strikes me is that how very similar the Bisayan script is to our Malay brothers of Java, one can see that it is almost identical. The following is the Huruf Jawa, the ancient writing script of the Malay people in Java, Sumatra:

java-old-LP1 - Awit Sa Bohol – Written on original Bisaya Script - Pulong Bisaya

and compare that to the Filipino style:

awitsabohol1aj4 - Awit Sa Bohol – Written on original Bisaya Script - Pulong Bisaya

It sends chills down my spine.

Again, salamat kaayo, Mr. Ferniz

My obeisance,
Bran Lorenzo
