Endless Love

Know for certain that death does not end my relationships with all those I love. We will go on loving each other beyond time and telling.

God-given Talents

God does not give us talents for our own pleasure and purpose, rather God gives us talents primarily to serve the world in simple and generous ways.

Sorrow is Worth the Price

In times of sorrow, I can be thankful for the fact that I have loved and been loved, thankful, in fact, for the ability to grieve because grief witnesses to love.

Jesus Shows Us the Way

If baptism is the sacrament through which people enter the church, it seems fitting that Jesus shows the way—identifying with sinners though he was sinless.

Forms of Holiness

Saints are not an alternative to God but instead remind us that cooperating with God’s grace (holiness) can take many forms.

Mending Relationships

The temporal punishment due to sin has immediate consequences for the sinner. He or she realizes that sin hurts a person’s relationship with God; repentance is part of mending that relationship and of living it out more completely.

God's Grace

Faith always involves a response—not to impress God but to allow God’s grace to bear fruit, to affect our decisions radically.

Human Freedom

Human freedom is very real and can produce very different results. God’s knowledge does not cancel out human freedom—for good or for ill.

Decide Wisely

God freely created everything that exists. Our being made in God’s image means that we have a limited but very real freedom, which we need to use wisely and generously.

The Good News of Jesus

The Good News of Jesus Christ affects all our relationships with friends and family members and also our relationships with people whom we will never meet.

Baptism is For Everyone

Every baptized person needs to mature in his or her faith. If the church baptized only adults, that would almost guarantee a false sense of security, a conviction that ongoing conversion is no longer necessary.

Repentance

Repentance is not simply about straightening things out with an angry God who, in human terms, is actually more disappointed than angry. Repentance is also about admitting that our sins affect how we treat other people.

Members of the Church

By baptism we become members of the church. Through directly sharing in the Eucharist, our baptismal identity is reinforced and our conversion to God’s ways is deepened. We become church by praying as church.

Honest Prayer

Your prayer for someone who is living does not guarantee that he or she will accept God's grace, but it makes you a better sign of God's grace for that individual. Perhaps that is precisely what God is counting on.

Pure Love

If you want to know the will of God as it relates to purity, go to him in prayer. He’s not waiting to take something away from you. He’s waiting to teach you to love.

Precious Virtue

Holy purity, the queen of virtues, the angelic virtue, is a jewel so precious that those who possess it become like the angels of God in heaven, even though clothed in mortal flesh.

Pure Relationships

Each man must look within himself to see whether she who was entrusted to him as a sister in humanity has not become in his heart an object of adultery.

Purity of Soul

From today onwards, I am going to strive for the greatest purity of soul, that the rays of God’s grace may be reflected in all their brilliance. I long to be a crystal in order to find favor in His eyes.

Beauty on the outside never gets into the soul, but beauty of the soul reflects itself on the face.

Blessed Are the Poor in Spirit

God is not induced to act on behalf of the poor because of their merits or their moral dispositions but because of their greater readiness to believe.

His Poverty is For You

A gift is precious particularly when it is the result of self-denial, when one deprives oneself of what is given. And the Word, in a particular way, deprived himself of his divine riches to be able to become one of us.

For the Sake of Unbelievers

To be sincere and fruitful, the tears of the believer must be poured out not only because of unbelievers but for the sake of unbelievers, through genuine compassion.

God, Fill Me With Compassion

The biggest sin against the poor and the hungry is perhaps indifference, making believe we do not see, passing by on the other side of the street.

Caring For the Poor

The righteousness God requires of human beings is summarized in the dual precept of love of God and love of neighbor. It is love of neighbor, then, that should motivate those who hunger for righteousness to care for those who hunger for bread.

Wake From Sleep

Daily life lulls us into forgetting what we are here for and where we are heading. Advent rouses us with a robust “Be prepared.” We do not know the time of Christ’s coming, at the end of the world or the close of our earthly lives. When he comes, will he find us using swords or plowshares?

Believers Without Boundaries

(Is 4:2-6; Mt 8:5-11) Isn’t it wonderful that the prayer we all offer before receiving the body and blood of Christ comes from a so-called pagan? In his humility, the Roman centurion insists that Jesus can cure his servant without even traveling to his bedside. This man’s faith amazes Jesus and frees him to fulfill it.

Answering the Call

(Rom 10:9-18; Mt 4:18-22) The brothers Andrew and Simon had no idea their lives would change drastically when they cast their nets into the sea one fine day. Then along came Jesus with his “Follow me.” That was the first day of their new lives as fishers of people who would say yes to the gospel.

Feeding the Hungry

(Is 25:6-10a; Mt 15:29-37) Isaiah paints God as a magnanimous host, providing rich food and the finest wines for his guests. God not only welcomes and feeds but comforts and forgives. The Son of God shows us this maternal face of God when he has compassion on the hungry

Build on the Rock

(Is 26:1-6; Mt 7:21, 24-27) Is the house of your life resting on a rock foundation? Or might it be slipping onto the sand of good intentions? It isn’t saying “Lord, Lord,” but doing what the Lord says that prepares our hearts to be his dwelling place.

Be Healed

(Is 29:17-24; Mt 9:27-31) We sometimes doubt our ability to make a crucial difference in the lives of those who are sick, addicted, misguided. Spend time with Jesus in prayer, asking him about a specific compassionate deed: “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”

Walk This Way

(Is 30:19-21, 23-26; Mt 9:35—10:1, 5a, 6-8) Isaiah shares his vision of God as our Teacher who does not leave us to find our way alone. God is there, just over our shoulder, whispering in our ear, “This is the way; walk in it.” It is that same voice that instructs us today to be Christ’s ears for the elderly neighbor we listen to, Christ’s arms for the pregnant woman we comfort, Christ’s voice for the child we guide in living by faith.

Live in Harmony

We long for the peaceable kingdom in which predator and prey live side by side, never threatening or harming one another. John the Baptist boldly warns us to repent of our sinfulness and prepare to welcome the Savior in whom the Kingdom comes. On this eighth day of our Advent journey, rejoice.

Be Forgiving and Giving

(Is 35:1-10; Lk 5:17-26) God’s endless generosity to Israel and to us is depicted as the riotous blossoming of the desert, the strengthening of the weak and the end of sorrow. Jesus shows this same generosity to the paralytic, forgiving his sins and gifting him good health.

Seek the Lost

(Is 40:1-11; Mt 18:12-14) If Jesus had a favorite self-image, it was most likely the Good Shepherd. Even if 99 of his 100 sheep were fine, he would still head out to track down the wanderer. Like his Father, he does not want to lose a single “little one.”

Praise God’s Creation

(Is 41:13-20; Mt 11:11-15) The bad news of oil spills, climate change and endangered species calls us to practice good stewardship of God’s glorious creation. God delights in making springs gush forth in the wilderness as much as he must have in bringing forth roses in December for St. Juan Diego.

Don’t Pan the Prophets

(Is 48:17-19; Mt 11:16-19) God sends us in every age teachers and prophets. But when they do not fit our image (the wrong color, gender, ethnic group) we criticize and belittle them, refusing to accept their message. Neither Jesus nor John the Baptist could satisfy everyone’s expectations. But, “Wisdom is vindicated by her works.”

Living Simply

(Sir 48:1-4, 9-11; Mt 17:9a, 10-13) During the countdown to Christmas, we are bombarded by glittering commercials urging us to spend freely. But now is the time to remember John the Baptist, dressed in camel skin and dining on insects. He receives high praise from Jesus for calling the people to repentance and paving the Savior’s way.

Like children pining for Christmas morning, we know what it means to wait for what we desire. Whether it is the safe arrival of loved ones from afar or a recovery from cancer, we wait in prayer and patience, hope and trust. Angelus Sibelius advises, “If in your heart you make a manger for his birth, then God will once again become a child on earth.”

Water the Seed

(Nm 24:2-7, 15-17a; Mt 21:23-27) Our Advent readings are lush with portrayals of God as a wondrous Creator of earthly abundance and a Sower of good seed. He turns barren ground to fertile purposes, giving life where there was only a wasteland. We invite our God to water the seeds of faith within us.

Be True to the Word

(Zep 3:1-2, 9-13; Mt 21:28-32) We can hold up the parable of the two sons like a mirror that reflects how well we are doing the Father’s will. Do we say yes to the works of mercy but neglect the poor because we “can’t find the time” to serve them? Or do we admit to our upside-down priorities and set out to do what God desires of us?

Discern the Signs

(Is 45:6c-8, 18, 21c-25; Lk 7:18b-23) When John the Baptist needed to know if Jesus was truly “the one who is to come,” Jesus responded by listing his deeds of compassion. He spent himself in love for all those who needed him. By this sign, we will know him. By what signs will others know us as Christ’s disciples?

Embrace God’s Purpose

(Is 54:1-10; Lk 7:24-30) Both Jesus and the Baptist were rejected by the Pharisees and legal scholars who insisted on their own version of who the Messiah was and what his message should be. As the Gospel puts it, “[they] rejected God’s purpose for themselves.” In silent prayer, consider how you are fulfilling God’s purpose. And rejoice at all the good you discover.

Family Connections

(Gn 49:2, 8-10; Mt 1:1-17) We can imagine how pleased Jesus would have been to hear a recitation of the 42 generations connecting him with Abraham and David. But he would have been saddened by how few of his great-grandmothers were mentioned by name.

Angelic Voices

(Jer 23:5-8; Mt 1:18-25)The Gospels reveal precious little about the man who became Mary’s husband, and how he overcame the cultural and religious traditions that stood between them. What we do know is that Joseph had the courage to listen to an angel in a dream so vivid that it could not be ignored. In what ways have you listened to angelic voices?

God With Us

We have heard the angel’s announcement to Joseph so many times that we forget to be wowed by it. A virgin will give birth to a son. His name will be “God With Us.” If today you are burdened with holiday cares, how will you let them go into the arms of the God who is right here, right now, right with us, always?

The Favored One

(Is 7:10-14; Lk 1:26-38) Mary must have been stunned by an archangel’s greeting her as the “favored one” and by his assurance that the Lord was with her. Whatever her concerns about how God will empower her to accomplish his plan, Mary dares to go forward, knowing that she is loved and that she will suffer. We, too, are favored ones in God’s eyes.

Honor the Mothers

(Sg 2:8-14; Lk 1:39-45) How easy it is to miss the reality that Elizabeth, the aged mother-to-be of John the Baptist, is the first person in the Gospels to be described as “filled with the Holy Spirit.” Overcome with joy at her young relative’s pregnancy, Elizabeth shouts her praise of holy Mary and the blessed boy in her womb.

Sing Out!

(1 Sm 1:24-28; Lk 1:46-56) Mary is so moved by Elizabeth’s tribute to her and to her Son that she has to sing out her joy. Her Magnificat brims over with praise for the Lord, confidence in her own holiness and prophetic protest against powerful oppressors. Mary’s song suggests that our prayers are sometimes too domesticated.

Celebrate the Little Ones

(Mal 3:1-4, 23-24; Lk 1:57-66) What a party they must have had at the home of Elizabeth and Zechariah when their only child was born. The relatives were floored when Elizabeth gave him a name that was new to the family tree. But Zechariah agreed. The child would be called John and he would be great in holiness.

A Mighty Savior

(2 Sm 7:1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16; Lk 1:67-79) Like the proud Jewish papa that he was, Zechariah greeted John’s birth with an animated song of thanksgiving for the mighty Savior his son would serve. On this eve of Christmas, we join in giving thanks for “the tender mercy of our God” who comes to guide us in his ways of peace.

Welcome, Prince of Peace!

(Is 9:1-6; Lk 2:1-14) A child is born to us. Mary and Joseph hover over him, their faces bright as stars. Shepherds kneel in humble worship, and angels sing his glory. Brother Ox and Sister Lamb amble up to the manger. Christ our Light has come into the world. Our Advent journey ends in adoration.

Hunger For Righteousness

The great message of the beatitudes is that, regardless of what the rich and the satisfied will or will not do concerning the current status of things, the situation of the poor and of those who hunger for righteousness is preferable to that of the rich.

We cannot live together in harmony, in a family or in another kind of community, without the practice of forgiveness and reciprocal mercy.

Rich in Mercy

In the life of the church, as in the life of Jesus, both the mercy of the heart and the mercy of hands should shine forth together, whether it be “visceral mercy” or works of mercy.

Our Main Focus

As you wrestle with tangled lights and strained finances, remember to put all that aside and focus on the true meaning of the day. It can be found in a tiny house and in the love of those gathered there.

Depend on God

While the world is filled with God’s overflowing goodness, it is poverty that allows one to experience this goodness by becoming radically dependent on God.

Grace is God’s enabling power. His grace will give you the strength, wisdom and favor to accomplish what you could not normally accomplish on your own. His grace is sufficient for whatever you need in your future. Receive His grace today, by faith, and let Him empower you to walk through that difficulty into a place of supernatural victory in Jesus’ name!

Created in His Image

We were created in the likeness of an infinite God whose grandeur surpasses all earthly categories. The more perfectly we embrace this divine image, as the saints have done, the more expansive we become.

Hymn of Praise

Just as many different instruments merge into the melodic glory of an orchestra, so too this radical diversity of the communion of saints blends into one magnificent hymn of praise to God. The communion is the result of a common union: union with Jesus Christ.

Faith Fourishes in the Dark

Trials, temptations, spiritual dryness and suffering are all opportunities for our faith to grow stronger. We can, of course, neglect these opportunities and allow our faith to wither and die. But those who praise God in life’s difficulties will experience the opposite effect.

In Unison With Jesus

This is a perfect image of the life of faith: to joyfully cling to Christ, moving only according to his commands for our lives.

Perfect Bliss

Sin has distorted human existence. Faithfulness to God will ultimately bring perfect bliss but not in this fallen world. Here even the holiest men and women suffer from the crimes of others, as did Christ on the cross.

Virtue of Hope

The virtue of hope can sustain us through life’s greatest trials. By hoping in God’s victory over sin and death, we can more peacefully endure personal tragedies.

Victory

Though we live in the midst of a sinful world and evil seems to dominate life, we are safe in eternal life. We must still experience the dying and rising of Jesus, but the victory has been won.

One With God

We are one with God in the love of Jesus. On this firm basis, we are able to love God as God loves us—and to show God’s kind of loving to our neighbor.

Divine Love

God wants us to love the divine image in each other, but also wants us gradually to experience a personal, intimate, conscious relationship of love with the Trinity.

Seeking God

Creation is all God’s initiative; yet, in the mystery of freedom, we must accept God’s power in order to make a response. To “Seek God” is to allow ourselves to be found.

The Ultimate Gift

God shows how much human suffering hurts God by coming to share it. We do not explain suffering; we conquer it by the power of the crucified and risen Jesus, the sign of his Father’s tender concern.

God's Calling

God’s being all-powerful is simply a definition of God—limitless. But God’s power is never mere force. It is the relentless but gentle pursuit of the human heart, never intruding, but always calling.

Walking Together

We are indeed responsible adults who must “make it” through each day; yet we are God’s children, with our hand in our Creator’s, walking along together in total and peaceful dependence.

Divine Understanding

One of the best ways we can pray is to enter into Jesus’ feelings on various occasions in his life, for his human feelings are our human feelings.

Reliance on God

Our prayers of petition are our persistent attempt to be wholly aware of our dependence. The more we think we need something, the more we realize that we are ultimately helpless.

Genuine Prayer

Our prayer is our life. If our lives are faith-filled, they are prayer. If our prayer is genuine, our life is faith-filled. This communion is the way of life for all who love.

The Kingdom of God

The Kingdom of God is the power of God present to all human beings. This power offers salvation and also achieves salvation for those who respond.

Glorious Kingdom

By his death and resurrection, Jesus entered into the glory of the Kingdom, but he remains in his church to the end of time. Then he will hand over the Kingdom to his Father, forever.

God's Abundance

Faith in a living and loving God does not begin with us. It begins with God’s lavish interest in giving us the gift of faith that is the ground of fidelity.

Staying Faithful

Fidelity is the practical expression of love. Fidelity is a love that is supported by loyalty and courage. It is keeping your promises to God, family and country.

Unsurpassed Evidence

The Passion is the Son of God’s unsurpassed evidence of what fidelity—with its courage, splendid love, and perseverance—ultimately means.

Perfect Fidelity Prayer

At every Mass, the Church puts on our lips the seven petitions of the Our Father. Every petition is a call to holiness.

Spiritual Food

The Our Father is like a classic Renaissance painting that crowds the canvas with spiritual milk for beginners and meat for the mature.

Celebration of Love

Our faith is a gift from a living and loving God who lavishly tries to reach us and does so with persistent fidelity. It is a celebration of a God of love who tries all kinds of ways to touch us.

Is God Back?

God had not died in the sense that modern culture thought it had. God kept his promise to stay with us during every test our church had known—renewing us after the tumult.

Open Your Heart

Every time a thousand people close the door to God, the Spirit opens three thousand windows to Christ. To some this may look like a comeback, but the Son of God every day tirelessly knocks at the doors of millions of hearts.

The Holy Spirit nudges, doesn’t force, us to open our hearts to Christ. God never sleeps. The Spirit never rests.
