Abstract
The first World Manga series offers a premise where the hero must grapple with social problems of a global magnitude that are set in the real world. Fifteen year-old orphan Rei survives by his wits and guts on the mean streets of the world. His fortunes take a strange turn when he meets a trainer wielding some powerful transformational magic who offers to coach him to achieve his dream of becoming the greatest marital artist in the world! But it seems Rei's trainer is more interested in developing his mind, spirit and ugh! Heart than his thrashing, raging, and fighting moves! The stakes get higher when Rei meets a young woman fighting just to survive! Can Rei meets vanquish the specter of poverty? This publication includes some of the following headings: poverty - a ray of light; HIV/AIDS - first love; child soldiers of boys and men; global warming - the lagoon of the vanishing fish; girl's education - life lessons; corruption - broken trust; and interview with the author of the first World Bank Manga (passage one to passage six).

Genesis 4

 11  At ngayo'y sinumpa ka sa lupa na siyang nagbuka ng bibig na tumanggap sa iyong kamay ng dugo ng iyong kapatid;

 17  At kay Adam ay sinabi, Sapagka't iyong dininig ang tinig ng iyong asawa, at kumain ka ng bunga ng punong kahoy na aking iniutos sa iyo na sinabi, Huwag kang kakain niyaon; sumpain ang lupa dahil sa iyo; kakain ka sa kaniya sa pamamagitan ng iyong pagpapagal sa lahat ng mga araw ng iyong buhay;

 18  Ang isisibol niyaon sa iyo ay mga tinik at mga dawag; at kakain ka ng pananim sa parang;

We are sinners. "The wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23). We all deserve death and hell and the lake of fire. Is there no way out? Yes, there is one way — only one way.

Jesus Christ, God the Father's only begotten Son, paid the full price for our sins by shedding His blood on the cross. As a result, He paid for a full pardon for all our sins! Praise God! How awe-inspiring!

But that full pardon is only in force if we believe it is real, and place our faith in Jesus and His shed blood. - source: Chick Publication

Genesis 2

11  Ang pangalan ng una ay Pison: na siyang lumiligid sa buong lupain ng Havilah, na doo'y may ginto;

Press Release: HIGH QUALITY IN LOW PRICE: PNP SAVES UP TO P108 MILLION THROUGH G2G CONTRACT WITH THE STATE OF ISRAEL

The Philippine National Police has recently made history as several contracts for the procurement of security and defense equipment through Government to Government (G2G) transaction were inked in partnership with the State of Israel headed by Brig. Gen (Ret) Yair Kulas, Director of IMOD-SIBAT, Ministry of Defense of the State of Israel.

The said procurement contracts were signed for the supply and delivery of the following items:

• 13,457 units of 5.56mm Basic Assault Rifle (BAR) with Emtan Karmiel;
• 20 units of 7.62mm Light Machine Gun with IWI; and
• Intelligence Component of the PNP Secure, Mobile, Artificial –Intelligence Driven, Real-time (SMART) Policing Program.

The G2G mode of aquisition is pursuant to Section 4.2 of the RIRR of RA No. 9184, which the PNP took advantage of as it has ably saved for the Philippine government up to Php107,769,090.00 of taxpayers' money.

Under the contract, the PNP has closed the  procurement deal for 5.56 mm basic assault rifles of the same superior quality of rifles from previous procurements for only Php35,280.00 per unit, far lower than the price obtained through Public Bidding last 2017 to 2019 with a price ranging from Php42,000.00 up to Php87,000.00 per unit.

"We have pledged to the President that the PNP will not allow corruption under my leadership, we will be transparent with our transactions and will use our taxpayers' money wisely", PNP chief, PGen Debold Sinas said, adding that the contract signing is "a clear manifestation of our commitment to further equip our law enforcers with increased capability while working with world-renowned country producer of high-quality firearms and other defense equipment --- Israel".

The huge amount saved for the government is the PNP's share for best practices under RA 9184 on the procurement of specified qualities of firepower equipment acquired under the mission-essential tools, assets and resources.

"That's not me, I do not have a personal webpage or social network account except the official PNP webpage at www.pnp.gov.ph and the official PNP Facebook page at  https://www.facebook.com/pnp.pio which are the only authorized platform for social network correspondence with the Chief, PNP," he said.

The PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) under Police Brigadier General Marvin Manuel Pepino has been instructed to conduct a thorough investigation and to initiate appropriate legal action against the creators and owners of this fake social networking account.

According to Pepino, the bogus account had an earliest public posting on November 25, 2020 and latest public posting on December 12, 2020.

The account has only 3 public photos posted including the standard photo of the CPNP for command activities and the donning of ranks in the Malacañang Palace with President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, Pepino explained.

He added that the account is active via messenger where the suspect communicates directly to unsuspecting victims mostly asking favors while the poser makes promises to act on it in exchange for consideration/payment for his alleged personnel who will process the victim's request.

The PNP-ACG is now in the processs of securing a Court Order for Warrant to Disclose Computer Data (WDCD) for Facebook, Telecommunication Companies (TelCos) and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) based on complaint affidavits of victims/complainants or their legal representatives.

Pepino said the creator and owner of the fake account may be held liable for Computer-Related Identity Theft under RA 10175 wherein the complaining victim is th Chief PNP; and for violation of Article 315 of the Revise Penal Code for Swindling/Estafa upon the complaint of victims.

PNP Spokesperson, Police Brigadier General Ildebrandi N Usana said "the use of Chief, PNP's name, photos and other items appearing to be attributed to his person was apparently a devious act by unscrupulous individuals using the social media to malign the PNP top leadership."

"We also advise FB account holders and the netizens to be prudent, discerning and judicious at everything they see in the social media. Some of the things seen in social media do not anymore reflect the truth and legitimacy of the information and tend to destroy the reputations of innocent individuals," Usana said.

Philippine Laws / Ricamora vs Trent 1904 Decision
December 30, 2020, 03:19:32 PM
G.R. No. 1534, January 04, 1904
FORTUNATO RICAMORA, PETITIONER, VS. GRANT T. TRENT, JUDGE OF FIRST INSTANCE OF CEBU, RESPONDENT.

D E C I S I O N
WILLARD, J.:

This case was tried in the Court of First Instance for the Province of Cebu by the late Judge Carlock, and decided in favor of the plaintiff. After the death of Judge Carlock, the defendant presented a bill of exceptions to Judge Trent, acting as the judge of that court, for allowance and signature. He refused to sign it, and the defendant procured an order to show cause under section 499 of the Code of Civil Procedure. The judge has filed an answer stating the reasons for his action.
We construe the answer as indicating that, by means of the stenographer's notes, it will be possible to prepare a bill of exceptions which will contain a true statement of what took place at the trial. The judge was of the opinion, however, that he had no power to sign such a bill of exceptions because he was not the judge who tried the case. In this we think there was error.

Whatever may be the rule in other jurisdictions, it is certain that under our law the signature of the judge who tried the case is not an absolutely indispensable requisite of a valid bill of exceptions. In speaking of the power of this court to settle a bill of exceptions under said section 499, this court said: "We think that the remedy provided in this section applies not only to cases where the judge has declined to take action on the bill of exceptions tendered by the party or has refused to certify such bill without substituting another in its place, but to cases where he has certified a bill of exceptions but has refused to embody therein some or all of the exceptions embraced in the bill tendered him, and which the party claims to have been properly taken." (Gonzaga vs. Norris, 1 Off. Gaz.,346.[1])

By this section this court is given the power to determine what took place at the trial in the court below not only without any statement of the judge who presides at such trial on that subject but even against his statement.

Section 143 of the Code of Civil Procedure nowhere states that the bill of exceptions shall be presented to the judge who tried the case. It is capable of the construction that the judge referred to is a judge of the court at the time the bill is presented for signature. In determining which construction is proper, section 499 and the construction which we have given it are entitled to great weight. The legislature having provided that this court might settle a bill of exceptions against the statements of the trial judge, it is more probable that they intended to intrust that power to the judge actually presiding in the court at the time the bill is tendered rather than to make the signature of the trial judge indispensable, when by reasons of death or absence it would be impossible to obtain such signature. In every such case the judge of that court would be better able to determine what took place at the trial than this court is in cases falling under section 499.

In determining the intention of the legislature we are entitled to take into consideration moreover the consequences which would follow from a contrary decision. In this case Judge Carlock's death has made it impossible to secure a "bill of exceptions unless his successor is allowed to sign it. The result is that the defeated party is deprived of his right to appeal without any fault of his own. The legislature never could have intended such a result. The only other relief would be for the court to grant a new trial. This would involve the parties and the province in a large and additional expense without in a majority of cases any reason therefor. This result could not have been intended by the legislature. In most cases as in this case the evidence is preserved in the stenographer's notes, and it is as easy for one judge to determine what took place at the trial as another.

An order will be entered directing the judge below to sign and allow a bill of exceptions after he has made it conform to the facts as they may appear from the stenographer's notes or other evidence.

Arellano, C. J., Torres, Cooper, Mapa, McDonough, and Johnson, JJ., concur.

G.R. No. 31244, September 23, 1929
BOHOL LAND TRANSPORTATION CO., PETITIONER AND APPELLANT, VS. NAZARIO S. JUREIDINI, RESPONDENT AND APPELLEE.

D E C I S I O N
VILLA-REAL, J.:

This is a petition filed by the Bohol Land Transportation Co. praying for the review and reversal of an order issued by the Public Service Commission on November 23, 1928, admitting the application of respondent Nazario S. Jureidini, granting him a certificate of public necessity and convenience to operate regularly fourteen trucks in the Province of Bohol where the petitioner and appellant is a common carrier, and cancelling the authority given to the Bohol Land Transportation Co. in its certificate of public convenience and utility, to make special trips.
In support of its appeal, the petitioner assigns the following alleged errors as committed by the Public Service Commission in said order, to wit:

"1. That the Public Service Commission erred in granting a certificate of public convenience to the applicant Nazario S. Jureidini.

"2. That the Public Service Commission erred in ordering the cancellation of the right of the opponent Bohol Land Transportation Co, to make special trips."

In support of his application for a certificate of public utility and convenience, respondent-appellee Nazario S. Jureidini attempted to prove the following facts: That the Bohol people often had to remain a long time along the roads waiting for some means of transportation; that it often happened that the busses of the Bohol Land Transportation Co. were so crowded that many people had to be left behind; that for lack of space the articles carried by the passengers could not be taken aboard; that many of the automobile and truck drivers with certificates of public utility and convenience, including some in the employ of the petitioner-appellant, have been arrested and sentenced for the overloading of passengers and freight; that the trucks of the Bohol Land Transportation Co. sometimes change routes without proper authorization, and their special cars operate without previous application for permission to do so, and at hours which prejudice the trucks of the respondent-appellee, depriving him of his passengers; that the Bohol Land Transportation Co. refused to carry the mail for three days during the year 1927 without a just cause.

Upon these facts, testimony was given by the respondents appellee himself, Nazario S. Jureidini; Justo Acierto, a Constabulary sergeant who had served fifteen years in Bohol; Jose Hugo, owner of five Public Utility automobiles, and a competitor of the Bohol Land Transportation Co.; Juan Sarmiento, inspector of the Bureau of Public Works, whose duty is to inspect automobiles and provincial roads; Angel Osea, a telegraph operator of the Bureau of Posts; Juan Castro and Sotero Bunac, ex-employees of the Bohol Land Transportation Co., who were dismissed from the service.

In order to offset the testimony of the respondent-appellee, Nazario S. Jureidini, and his witnesses with respect to the insufficiency of the service rendered by the Bohol Land Transportation Co., the latter presented Exhibits 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9, consisting in reports of the trips made by its busses during the months of January, February, and March, 1928, preceding the trial which took place in the month of May of the same year, showing that the number of passengers in Bohol was so small that in January their average hardly reached 28 per cent of the total capacity; in the months of February and March, 24 per cent; and in the month of April, 32 per cent; that is, an average of 28 per cent; that said figures were compiled from the records prescribed by the Public Service Commission.

With respect to the refusal of the Bohol Land Transportation Co. to carry the mail during three days, said company endeavored to prove that at the request of the Director of Posts, the company commenced to carry mail on January 1, 1925; that having failed to reach an agreement as to the compensation to be paid for the service, by mutual consent the matter was referred to the Public Service Commission for decision; that after hearing both parties, said Commission issued an order in November, 1926, fixing the compensation at 2 centavos per kilometer regardless of weight; that the company considered this compensation too small; and that inasmuch as the company had been carrying the mail during the years 1925 and 1926 without having received any compensation, the officers of the company decided not to do anything more than what they were required to do, that is, carry the mail on the company's trucks; that in view of this the employees of the Bureau of Posts were notified that they should place the mail on the company's trucks; that said employees refused to do so and demanded that the employees of said company go into the post office, take the mail bags, and put them on the trucks, as they had done theretofore; that, in consequence of this mutual refusal, the mail could not be transported notwithstanding the fact that the company's trucks went to the Tagbilaran post office at the appointed hours to collect the mail; that the reason for the Bohol Land Transportation Co. in refusing to permit its employees to enter the post office was to avoid all responsibility for any loss that might occur in said office; that the company and the Director of Posts finally agreed that the employees of said office would place the mail bags at the main entrance, and that the employees of said company would take them from there; that during the year 1927 the contract was extended for six months more, that is, until July 1, 1928, at the request of the Director of Posts, during which time, according to the testimony of the Bureau of Posts employee, the service was good.

Examining the evidence of both parties, we find, in the first place, that it does not appear that any official or unofficial complaint was filed with the Public Service Commission against the Bohol Land Transportation Co. for inadequate service or for violation of any of the terms of its certificate, save the refusal to carry the mail. We also find that aside from Juan Sarmiento's testimony, corroborated by the notes taken by him, the testimony given by the other witnesses, who specified neither dates nor time cannot serve as the basis for determining whether or not the Bohol Land Transportation Co. has in fact rendered deficient service. With regard to Juan Sarmiento's testimony, it appears that the days when he noted a lack of means of transportation, were feast days and days on which fairs were held, and as such cannot serve as the basis for determining the sufficiency or insufficiency of the service. As to the testimony of the other witnesses, especially that of the two ex-employees of the company, if it were true that they used to leave passengers behind on the road for lack of room, they were in duty bound to report that fact to the company and should have done so, and since they failed to do so, it is presumed that there was no such deficiency.

Against all this, we have statistics showing the number of passengers transported by the Bohol Land Transportation Co.'s buses in relation to their capacity. Said statistics show that the average number of passengers transported by the company during the months of January, February, March and April, 1928, .immediately preceding the trial of this case in the municipality of Tagbilaran, was not more than 28 per cent of said capacity.

Regarding the change of route and the operation of special cars without previous application, there is no evidence of any complaint having been lodged against the Bohol Land Transportation Co.

Let us now pass to a consideration of the assignments of error alleged to have been committed by the Public Service Commission in its decision. In said decision dated November 23, 1928, said commission said the following:

"Until recently, the conditions were such that the service rendered by the Bohol Land Transportation Co. was, in the opinion of this commission, sufficient and adequate for the volume of traffic existing there; but about six months ago said volume of traffic increased to such an extent that the service rendered by the Bohol Land Transportation Co. is insufficient and inadequate, which the said opponent company must have noticed when, for several months, it frequently made special trips, which it was authorized to make, which shows that the regular service heretofore rendered was not sufficient to take care of all the traffic existing in the Province of Bohol."

It will be seen that, according to the commission, until six months prior to November 23, 1928, the service rendered by the Bohol Land Transportation Co. was adequate and sufficient, and it was only after that date that it became insufficient and inadequate due to the increased volume of traffic. The Bohol Land Transportation Co. has denied such a state of affairs and attempted to prove such denial by its statistics. But even where existing means of transportation, including those of the Bohol Land Transportation Co., should prove inadequate, that is not sufficient to grant a certificate of public utility and convenience to a new common carrier, without first giving the Bohol Land Transportation Co. an opportunity to improve its service by increasing the means of transportation, as this court held in the case of Batangas Transportation Co. vs. Orlanes (52 Phil., 455) and in the recent case of Javier vs. Orlanes (G. R. No. 31310)[1] decided by this court on September 5, 1929.

As to the second assignment of error, the decision appealed from holds as follows:

"In view of the readjustment of the hours of the applicant and of the opponent Bohol Land Transportation Co. on the lines authorized herein, the extra or special trips which said opponent Bohol Land Transportation Co. was authorized to make in its certificate of public convenience are no longer necessary to the public, and should therefore be cancelled. Wherefore, the commission hereby orders said trips cancelled, and that portion excluded from the decisions rendered in proceedings Nos. 5108 and 3814 which says: "The Bohol Land Transportation Company may, however, upon application therefor, make special trips outside the hours set forth in the aforesaid routes and schedules."

The cancellation of the right or authority granted the Bohol Land Transportation Co. in its certificate of public utility and convenience to make extra or special trips upon application therefor, is a partial revocation of said certificate. The total or partial revocation of a certificate of public utility and convenience can take place only when the holder thereof has violated some law, ordinance or condition thereof. The commission's only reason for cancelling the authority granted the Bohol Land Transportation Co. to make special trips is the readjustment of the applicant's and the opponent's hours, as a result of granting the former a certificate of public utility and convenience. If, as we have said, the commission erred in granting a certificate of public utility and convenience to Nazario S. Jureidini, such concession cannot justify the cancellation of said authority.

Even if there were a good reason for such cancellation, the Bohol Land Transportation Co. should have been notified thereof, and given an opportunity to be heard before carrying it out. Although it is quite true that Act No. 3108, as amended, does not expressly provide for such notification and hearing, as much may be inferred from its provisions, for section 15 thereof requires such notification and hearing in order to make a holder of a certificate of public utility and convenience comply with his duties. If the law demands this condition for lesser things, it should be understood to demand it for greater ones, for the requirement that a duty be complied with is less onerous than the deprivation of a right.

Therefore, the Bohol Land Transportation Co. was entitled to receive notice and be heard before being deprived of its right, and the commission erred in depriving it of such right without first giving notice and a hearing on any complaint against it for any inefficiency.

Another reason why the Public Service Commission granted a certificate of public necessity and convenience to the applicant and appellee Nazario S. Jureidini is thus expressed by said commission:

"Moreover,, the opponent company, the Bohol Land Transportation Co., which was one of the first operators that established a regular service in the Province of Bohol, had been transporting the mails of the Bureau of Posts under contract throughout the island, but for some reason or other the authorities of the Bureau of Posts were obliged to withdraw this service from the Bohol Land Transportation Co., apparently due to charges on the part of said company that sought to collect a greater amount for this service than the Bureau of Posts had provided therefor.

"Conditions came to such a pass that the Bohol Land Transportation Co. willfully and without permission or authority from this commission, arbitrarily and abusively discontinued the transportation of the mails in Bohol, so that for three consecutive days the whole province was without postal communication."

In the case Re Neri T. Hoxie (PUR [1920B], 671), the California Railroad Commission, denying the application of one Neri T. Hoxie for a certificate of public necessity and convenience, held:

"The possession of a United States mail contract and the necessity for compliance with a time of departure, as imposed by such contract, is not an indication that public convenience and necessity require the operation of a stage line as a common carrier under the jurisdiction of this commission in conformity with the statutory law."

Furthermore, section 17-A of Act No. 3108, as amended by Act No. 3299, provides:

"SEC. 17-A. Every person, association, or firm engaged in the transportation of passengers or freight by land, subject to the regulations of the Public Utility Commission, shall carry and transport the mails whenever requested by the Director of Posts or his representatives, under such terms and conditions, and for such amount of compensation as may be agreed upon between the Director of Posts and the carrier. In case the Director of Posts and the carrier fail to come to an agreement concerning the amount of compensation to be paid for the carriage of the mails, the same shall be fixed by the Commission in accordance with subsection (c), section fourteen of this Act: Provided, That the failure of the Director of Posts and the carrier to come to such agreement shall not be ground for refusal on the part of the carrier to carry and transport the mails who shall render such service pending determination of the amount of compensation by the Commission."

If, according to the above-quoted doctrine, the possession of a mail contract and the necessity for compliance with a time of departure, as imposed by such contract, is not an indication that public convenience and necessity require the operation of a transportation line, and if, according to the above-quoted legal provision, the Public Service Commission may compel a common carrier to transport the mails when no agreement has been reached by and between said carrier and the Director of Posts, there is no reason for granting, simply because there exists a mail contract, a certificate of public necessity and convenience to a new common carrier without first affording the present common carrier an opportunity to improve its service, if it be deficient, or to be heard and to defend itself in case of a complaint being filed against it for the violation of any law or of the terms of its certificate.

While it is true that the Bohol Land Transportation Co. failed in its duty to carry the Bohol mail for three consecutive days, and that the excuse given for such failure, namely, that it did not wish its employees to go into the post office to take the mail bags where they were prepared, so as to incur no responsibility for any loss that might occur, is insufficient to warrant depriving the public of the postal service, nevertheless, such violation should have been investigated, with a hearing of the parties, by the commission, which should then have taken the necessary measures justified by the result.

The fact that the Bohol Land Transportation Co. did not bid for the mail contract of Bohol, is not sufficient reason to issue in favor of the one who obtained the contract a certificate of public necessity and convenience without first giving an opportunity to the former to improve its service, binding itself to carry the mails in accordance with law.

For the foregoing considerations, we are of opinion and so hold: (1) That before giving a certificate of public necessity and convenience to a transportation company or common land carrier, there being another in existence with the proper certificate, the latter must be given an opportunity to improve its service, should it be deficient or inadequate ; (2) that before a total or partial revocation of a certificate of public necessity and convenience, the party thereby affected must be notified and heard; (3) that the mere possession of a public mail contract is not a sufficient indication of the convenience and necessity of a new transportation line, and hence, will not sustain the issuance of a certificate of public necessity and convenience.

Wherefore, the decision appealed from is hereby reversed, with costs against the appellee. So ordered.

Avanceña, C. J., Johnson, Street, Villamor, Johns, and Romualdez, JJ., concur.

Press Release: BICOL RED FIGHTERS ABORT CPP ANNIVERSARY PLANS

PNP Chief Police General Debold Sinas confirmed reports that "The local communist movement and its armed component in the Bicol Region aborted the planned regional celebration of the Communist Party anniversary over the weekend due to a series of tactical setbacks and defections within the ranks of red fighters."

The PNP Chief said that as per Bicol Region PNP Director, Police Brig Gen Bartolome Bustamante, the Bicol Regional Party Committee (BRPC), at the last minute, aborted the celebration of 52nd CPP Anniversary in Cawayan, Masbate.

Sinas earlier noted the passive stance of the CPP-NPA that strongly supports the overall assessment that the movement has been substantially weakened because of the sustained and intensified government efforts to end local communist armed conflict that resulted to significant losses of key leaders, seasoned fighters and mass-base supporters.

A series of incidents preceding the December 26 planned celebration in Masbate was precipitated by the death of a ranking finance officer of the movement during a police operation last December 23.

ARJAN TORRES alias "Jan-Jan", 29, of Brgy. Cawayan Interior, Masbate City died in an encounter with police officers who were sent by the Court to serve three Warrants of Arrest against him.

Torres, identified in police records as P4 finance officer and "revolutionary tax" collector of Larangan 1, is respondent in a criminal case for Murder filed before the sala of Hon. Jose Ronald M Bersales of RTC Branch 47, Masbate City; and Attempted Murder filed before the sala of Hon. Teofilo B. Tambago of RTC Branch 46, Masbate City.

Following Torres' death, the Vice Commanding Officer of Larangan 1 of BRPC, Gil Pascua alias Ka Ronald surrendered to authorities along with three followers, Richan Labustro y Bartolay,  Alvin Labustro Laila, and Ricky Barrun Canali, all full-time members of Larangan 1 of KSP2, L1, KP4, BRPC.

Bustamante said Pascua and his followers are now serving a guides in manhunt operations against the notorious Eleazar Ontog alias 'Ka Randy', team leader of Squad 2 Platoon, L1 Komprob4 of BRPC.

SINAS:  ROBBERY-HOLDUP SYNDICATE FALLS

Police composite teams of Highway Patrol Group and Manila Police District swiftly traced and neutralized a robbery-holdup gang that victimized two Chinese casino players.

In his report to PNP chief, PGen Debold Sinas, HPG Director, PBGen Alexander Tagum, identified the key suspect as Ali Asgar Pendatum  Baraguir, a personal driver of the victims who turned robbery-holdup group leader that preyed on two Chinese expats Hanze Weng and Wuwez Fang who were supposedly playing Casino games in a high-end gaming hub in Paranaque City.

PGen Sinas lauded the composite teams of HPG-Special Operations Team and  Local Territorial Unit of MPD for the successful operations against the gang leader and for the arrest of three other suspects today, December 29 at 12:05 MN, in a hotel in Malate, Manila.

Tagum narrated that around 2PM of December 28, the two Chinese nationals withdrew cash bills amounting to nearly Php 32,340,000.00 before heading to Casino games in Paranaque City.

Based on the statements of the victims while they were along JW Diokno Blvd., their driver, Baraguir stopped his driven motor vehicle and unlocked the doors. The suspect connived with his brother who suddenly barged in the vehicle and pointed a gun toward two victims to declare holdup.

After they were dumped along the road, the two victims immediately reported the crime to the PNP-HPG. The Regional Highway Patrol Unit of National Capital Region swiftly acted on the incident, dispatching a Special Operations Team and Intelligence Operatives to arrest the suspects and recovery of vehicles.

The group was traced after the initial investigation revealed thru CCTV footages that they boarded a taxi to go to a hotel in Manila which has been tracked as their safe area. Police investigators sought the help of the taxi driver to locate the place in Manila where he dropped the two suspects.

The police confiscated from the suspects  one (1) Cal .45 Pistol and two (2) motor vehicles described as Toyota Vios and Ford Raptor recovered in front of a gasoline station along MIA road in Pasay City and undertermined amount of money.

All arrested suspects will be facing criminal charges, while the police teams are eyeing for another operation to arrest other cohorts.

Philippine History / Last Day of Dr Jose P Rizal
December 29, 2020, 12:21:25 PM
By Bohol Provincial Library via FB
#OnThisDay December 29, 1896, at 7:00 A. M. Jose Rizal is notified of his death sentence and execution. After learning his fate through official document, he is led to the chapel-cell of Fort Santiago, where he spent his last 24 hours.

Priest after priest visited him, some of whom were Rizal's professors, his counsel, Lt. Taviel de Andrade also visited him. Later, Rizal excused himself to write letters to Paciano, Josephine, and his Austrian friend, Dr. Ferdinand Blumentritt and gave them to Special Judge Advocate Captain Rafael Dominguez for transmittal.

Rizal's letter to Ferdinand Blumentritt:

"My dear Brother, When you receive this letter, I shall be dead by then. Tomorrow at seven, I shall be shot; but I am innocent of the crime of rebellion. I am going to die with a tranquil conscience. Adieu, my best, my dearest friend, and never think ill of me!  Fort Santiago, 29 December 1896 José Rizal Regards to the whole family, to Sra. Rosa, Loleng, Conradito, and Federico. I leave a book for you as my remembrance."

Rizal's mother, Teodora Alonzo paid her final visit to Jose Rizal. She was accompanied by her daughter, Trinidad Mercado. Rizal's sisters were also allowed to pay him visits. He gave them his possessions:

Narcisa – Wicker Chair
Angelica, niece – Handkerchief
Mauricio, nephew – Belt, watch, and chain
Trinidad – Alcohol Burner with Mi Ultimo Adios

In between all these times, the Jesuit priests kept returning to take up religious question again and again. Finally, at around 11:30 P.M., Rizal signed his retraction from masonry, in the presence of Frs. Vicente Balaguer, Jose Vilaclara, and Estanislao March, as attested to by Spanish officers and three door guards
  • [Jesuit Priests Version; Those who affirm the authenticity of Rizal's retraction are prominent Philippine historians such as Nick Joaquin, Nicolas Zafra, León María Guerrero III, Gregorio Zaide, Guillermo Gómez Rivera, John Schumacher et al.] ... [Members of the Masonry raised objections against the authenticity of Rizal's masonry retraction; the debate has persisted whether Rizal's retraction is authentic].

My Last Farewell (Mi Ultimo Adios in Spanish) was the last poem that Jose Rizal wrote. It had no title when Rizal finished writing it. It was Mariano Ponce, his friend, who gave the title to this poem.

SINAS: CPP NPA WEAKENED BY SURRENDER OF REBELS, FAILED OPERATIONS

Defections by disgruntled red fighters, major operational setbacks and costly tactical losses continue to hound the underground communist terrorist movement this year.

On the very day of the 52nd founding anniversary of the Communist Party of the Philippines, 35 red fighters surrendered and  renounced their membership with the CPP and its armed wing the New People's Army in Caraga and Eastern Visayas regions, according to PNP Chief, Police General Debold M Sinas.

Pursuant to Executive Order No. 70 creating the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC), these rebel returnees are given the life-changing opportunity to lead normal lives with their families as free and empowered citizens, he said.

On the same day, two ranking CPP-NPA-NDF leaders both wanted by the Court to stand trial for Kidnapping and Murder were captured in Quezon province.

On the week leading to the 52nd founding anniversary of the local communist movement, from December 18 to 26, 2020, six CPP-NPA-NDF were arrested, 108 surrendered and 45 assorted firearms and 8 explosive devices were confiscated.

Over the entire 11-month period from January thru November 2020, a total of 3,312 communist terrorist personalities were accounted for, of which 366 were arrested; 117 died during the operations; and 2,829 surrendered during separate police operations.

The PNP has enrolled 350 rebel returnees to the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP) and Amnesty program, while 407 surrendered firearms were processed for grant of government benefits under E-CLIP.

Despite the challenges brought by COVID-19 pandemic, the PNP remains focused in addressing threats to national security.

In his assessment, Sinas said "The enactment of Republic Act 11479 or the Anti-Terror Act boosts opportunities for the PNP to fully end the local insurgency."

He also noted that the Communist group was generally passive in terms of mounting offensive operations that could show its strength and relevance relative to the celebration of the CPP's 52nd Founding Anniversary.

This passive stance strongly supports the overall assessment that the CPP/NPA has been substantially weakened because of the sustained and intensified government efforts to end local communist armed conflict that resulted to significant losses of key CPP-NPA leaders, seasoned fighters and mass supporters.

Still, the PNP remains vigilant in ensuring that it is able to effectively neutralize the remaining strength and armed capabilities of the rebels. "It is still likely that they will attempt to mount armed offensives,   possibly through the use of improvised landmines to ensure casualties", the Chief PNP said.

He added, the recent formal tag by the Anti-Terrorism Council of the CPP-NPA as a terrorist organization, is another significant setback to the underground local communist movement and its affiliate organizations. This means that CPP-NPA assets may now be subject to the Anti-Money Laundering Council's authority to freeze pursuant to Section 11 of RA 10168 or the Terrorism Financing Prevention and Suppression Act as provided under the Section 25 of the ATA.

"With more equipment and personnel for tactical police operations, including five newly-organized maneuver battalions of the PNP Special Action Force, the PNP is poised to hit harder on its assigned internal security tasks and specific targets", Sinas added.

MASHAV Israel Scholars Gift Learning Equipment to Nueva Ecija Schools

Shalom Club Philippines, Inc. – Nueva Ecija Chapter held their annual holiday activity by donating printing materials to three schools in Nueva Ecija, namely: Alberto G. Bautista Elementary School, Maringalo Elementary School, and Puncan Elementary School.

Shalom Club is the international organization of professionals who received MASHAV scholarship training in Israel. The Philippines has produced MASHAV scholars from various sectors through the years.

MASHAV, through the Embassy of Israel in the Philippines, also contributed to the activity by donating printers and additional copy papers to each school. MASHAV Officer Ms. Gladys Baniqued-Turiano represented the embassy during the turnover ceremony of the learning equipment.

The MASHAV scholars provided support to the distance learning approach of the schools due to the pandemic. In lieu of their annual Share-A-Lunch and gift giving with students from the province, Shalom Club opted to adjust their activity based on the needs of these schools.

Israel recently donated learning equipment to the Department of Education of the Philippines to help its continuous efforts in coping up with the pandemic and to aid in providing distance learning to the Filipino students. Israel also built a hand washing facility at Makati High School and Quirino High School to give emphasis on the importance of hand washing in helping control the spread of COVID-19.

The story of workplace AI should be one of collaboration, not replacement.

In 2018, the tech giant Huawei arranged a surprising performance of Franz Schubert's Symphony no. 8.

Why was it surprising? Well, Schubert began the symphony almost 200 years ago, but he died after he completed its first two movements. Yet somehow, this orchestra managed to play four. That's where Huawei came in; the company used AI technology to analyze Schubert's style and predict what his missing movements might have sounded like!

Engineers fed the AI program 90 of the composer's finished compositions, and let it analyze the two existing movements of Symphony no. 8. In a process of human-AI collaboration, a contemporary composer then refined the output into two complete and entirely new movements.

The key message here is: The story of workplace AI should be one of collaboration, not replacement.

Huawei's ambitious musical venture points toward the ideal future of AI, which should be working in tandem with humans without replacing us entirely. In a sense, then, AI will hopefully become a kind of trusted and super-efficient coworker.

Overseeing the collaboration between this new colleague and regular employees will fall to business leaders. Their task will be to manage the new diversity of this human-AI workplace.

Delegation will be central to ensuring that this diversity is a success. After all, if AI is going to be of any use, it must be entrusted with the tasks it's most suited to. This is easier said than done, however. Leaders risk offending employees with the suggestion that some jobs are better left to AI.

Luckily, this isn't inevitable. Leaders need to remind employees that AI is a collaborator, not a competitor. By letting algorithms take care of crunching data and issuing verdicts, human employees can make use of their creativity and soft skills. In other words, AI should be understood as a collaborator that frees us up to be more human.

The Korean car manufacturer Hyundai showed just how fruitful human-machine collaborations can be. Instead of replacing their line workers with robots, they developed wearable, robotic exoskeletons for them instead.

These exoskeletons made heavy lifting much easier for employees, augmenting their abilities instead of replacing them. Leaders hoping to create an AI-friendly workplace could learn a lot from this approach. - Book summary by Blinklist.com

Lifestyle, Culture and Arts / What Are Soft Skills?
December 21, 2020, 02:36:01 PM
In the future, humans will need to rely on their soft skills, like empathy, agility, and creativity.

So, there are some limits to what AI can do in the workplace. Even though it's adept at managing, it can't lead.

But there's more to organizations than just leaders and managers; there are whole ranges of work we haven't even touched on yet.

Take the financial sector. Bit by bit, banks are replacing their employees with AI, especially those whose tasks are mostly mechanical and calculative. Does that suggest that the advent of AI will make everyone below the level of leadership obsolete? Besides leading, is there anything else left for humans to do?

The key message here is: In the future, humans will need to rely on their soft skills, like empathy, agility, and creativity.

The human touch that's necessary for real leadership is valuable at every level of an organization. In fact, the more business operations are automated, the more soft skills will come to be valued in employees. After all, if AI is making inroads into almost every other domain, what's left for us to capitalize on except what's uniquely human?

Job advertisements already bear this out. Even in banks, where mathematical and analytical skills once ruled the day, advertisements give increasing prominence to the social skills that candidates should demonstrate.

In fact, it's been estimated that demand for employees with emotional intelligence, the ability to recognize and manage the emotions of others, will increase sixfold over the next few years!

There are skills, besides emotional intelligence and social know-how, that will also come at a premium in the AI workplace. Take creativity and agility, for example.

AI is intelligent and can give you precise, swift, and informed answers to a number of questions. But its answers are rarely what we call creative. True innovation – the development of novel products, services, insights, and approaches – looks set to remain human for the foreseeable future.

AI also struggles to be agile. Agility, we know, refers to the ability to adapt to new circumstances quickly – in other words, it's a kind of high-speed flexibility. It can sometimes be difficult for us humans, but for AI, it can prove a real obstacle.

Look at what happens when developers create algorithms that can play video games. When everything's going according to plan, these algorithms can beat the very best humans hands down. But change one minor setting, and watch what happens: the human player will quickly learn and adapt. The AI, on the other hand, will flounder.

It's these few skills, which AI still struggles to grasp, that will distinguish human employees in the future. - Book summary by Blinklist.com

The ability to lead is beyond the powers of AI.

Leadership is a quality that everyone wants to possess. The ability to influence others, to motivate your peers, and to make wise decisions for the communal good is a rare and desirable power.

But is it a characteristic that AI can possess? If algorithms can work as managers, does that mean they can lead, too?

A leader provides others with a vision – ideally, with a vision so compelling that it imbues employees' daily work with meaning and inspires them to work with real enthusiasm. Is this something that AI can do too?

The key message here is: The ability to lead is beyond the powers of AI.

For a number of reasons, AI just can't lead. Whereas the functions of management are well suited to algorithms, the functions of leadership seem uniquely suited to real human beings. Why? Let's break it down.

At its most basic, leadership consists of the ability to influence others, or to convince them to act as you'd like them to. This means that it depends on social skills at least as much as it does on intelligent decision-making.

So even though AI can make informed decisions based on huge databases of information, it needs human help to inspire employees. In other words, AI lacks the aptitude to turn acute judgments into stimulating visions. AI can produce sound judgment, but it ultimately can't win hearts.

This isn't just speculation. Consumer research suggests that people are distrustful of AI: in fact, only 4 percent of people surveyed in the US said that they'd trust AI to hire employees.

Why is that? Well, for precisely the same reasons that AI would falter in a leadership position: it's intelligent enough, but it's unable to inspire confidence and win trust.

In short, it might be able to inform leaders – but it can never lead in its own right. - Book summary by Blinklist.com

AI is poised to enter the world of management.

What does the word management suggest to you? Bureaucracy? Paperwork? Stifling rules and regulations that nobody wants to follow?

It's easier to understand what management involves when you contrast it with leadership. Both involve directing people. But whereas leadership involves charisma, drive, and vision, management is more concerned with supervising day-to-day tasks – in other words, with making sure everything is kept ticking along.

These days, many employees actually feel that the workplace is overmanaged – even managers themselves aren't very fond of their jobs. But things are about to change profoundly.

The key message here is: AI is poised to enter the world of management.

It just so happens that the very things that make management dull are the same things AI is designed for. Think about it. What exactly do managers do?

Well, they make specific, quantifiable plans. They budget and set standards. They check in on employees, making sure they're hitting their targets and meeting their deadlines. They see to it that everything is running smoothly.

What's more, they work with a lot of data. Managing performance involves processing and evaluating data relating to each employee: targets met, sales made, days missed. Day after day, the information piles up.

AI is perfectly designed to make sense of the huge amount of data produced in the modern workplace. Instead of relying on the expensive, slow, and sometimes inaccurate data management humans carry out, work of this kind can be easily offloaded onto AI.

Once AI has interpreted this data, it can also issue automated responses based on its findings. To take one example, JPMorgan Chase, a powerful bank, uses algorithms to track employees and check whether they're acting in line with compliance regulations. Some companies even use algorithms to track employees' job satisfaction and to predict the likelihood that they'll resign!

What's clear is that AI is uniquely suited to many of the tasks that managers currently perform. But what about leadership? Is that uniquely human or can even that be outsourced to machines? - Book summary by Blinklist.com

How To Tips / Is the AI Revolution Coming?
December 21, 2020, 02:27:07 PM
The AI revolution is coming, whether we like it or not.

If you're a fan of sci-fi movies, the notion of intelligent machines probably worries you. In film after film, we've seen humankind develop super-smart robots only for them to rebel against their creators, with disastrous consequences every time.

Surely, you might think, these stories contain a lesson for us. But if they do, it's not one that's been heeded; a quick glance at the world of business will tell you that.

Year after year, artificial intelligence has been growing smarter – and industry leaders, eager to maximize their profits, have been paying close attention to these new, intelligent machines.

The key message here is: The AI revolution is coming, whether we like it or not.

So how will artificial intelligence change the world? To answer that question, we first need to look at what exactly the term AI refers to.

Put simply, AI describes a program that swallows data as its raw material and issues conclusions as its finished product. To do this, AI uses algorithms, a system of mathematical calculations that takes the data you enter, runs some computations on it, and produces useful findings as a result.

So far, this all sounds fairly innocuous, right? Well, think again. In 2016, a computer program developed by Google beat the world champion at Go, a Chinese board game even more complex than chess. For many, this was a watershed moment. People used to think that excelling at Go required a human touch – but Google's AlphaGo program proved them wrong.

After this victory, many businesspeople began to wonder whether AI might outstrip human judgment in their own fields. It didn't take long to find the answer. Just as AI was able to choose the most strategic moves in a game of Go, it's also able to indicate the course that businesses should take to achieve optimal results.

That's why current estimates predict that AI will add $13 trillion to the global economy over the next decade, changing the way businesses are managed for good.

With money like that on the line, the adoption of AI seems inevitable. But what will its human impact be, besides enriching investors? - Book summary by Blinklist.com

Inspiration & Hope / Christmas Prayer
December 20, 2020, 10:21:41 PM
Christmas  Holiday Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Christmas-time is such a blessed season of the year as we remember the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ in a stable in Bethlehem, and how we thank You for giving Your only begotten Son to be born into this world, so that by His death and resurrection, He could become our Savior, and we could become Your children. Thank You for the wonderful hope that the Christmas message instills into each of our hearts, and the glorious message of the gospel of peace. Peace with God to all Who believe in His name and the peace with God for all who have become Your children. Help us never to minimize the importance of that time when as our great, eternal Creator God, You broke into human history and became God incarnate, identifying with a race of fallen men, by taking on a body the human flesh, so that You could empathize without frailty and learn obedience by the things that You suffered. Lord, I thank You from the bottom of my heart for all Your goodness and grace to us, and for loving us so much that You chose to be born into our race so that we might be identified with Your righteousness. Praise Your holy name.
In Jesus' Name I Pray....
AMEN

This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. Joseph, to whom she was engaged, was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly. As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. "Joseph, son of David," the angel said, "do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord's message through his prophet: "Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means 'God is with us.'" When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife. But he did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus.
(Matthew 1:18-25)

BARMM cites 54 local governments for efficiency
John Unson, December 19, 2020

COTABATO CITY, Philippines — More than 50 local government units received Friday efficiency citations from the Bangsamoro government,  a pioneering system meant to boost functionality of LGUs in the infant autonomous region.

The periodic grant starting this year of the Local Government Functional Appraisal Award, or LoGFA, for LGUs in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao is an activity of the Ministry of the Interior and Local Government-BARMM.

The program is similar with the annual grant of the Seal of Good Local Governance, or SGLG citation, by the office of Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año for deserving LGUs in all parts of the country.

BARMM's local government minister, lawyer Naguib Sinarimbo, and Abdullah Cusain, assistant executive secretary in the office of Bangsamoro Chief Minister Ahod Balawag Ebrahim, led Friday's grant of LoGFA awards to 54 LGUs from across the autonomous region.

The now 23-month Bangsamoro region covers the provinces of Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi and the cities of Lamitan, Marawi and Cotabato.

Among the recipients of BARMM's first ever LoGFA awards were the popular municipalities of Maluso and Upi in the provinces of Basilan and Maguindanao, respectively.

Maluso, known as the former "shabu capital of Basilan," thrice received in recent years an SGLG from the central office of the Department of the Interior and Local Government.

Peace and sustainable development have markedly been spreading around Maluso after the first election to office in 2016 of its second-termer mayor, Hanie Bud, former manager of the Regional Ports Management Authority of the now defunct Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

"Our efforts to make our municipality become peaceful and progressive can never take off without the help of the police, the military and the Muslim and Christian community leaders under my office," Bud said.

The LGU of Upi, under Mayor Ramon Piang Sr., received four SGLGs from DILG's central office from between 2015 to 2019.

Upi, a hinterland town in the first district of Maguindanao, is the main bastion of the Bangsamoro region's non-Moro indigenous Teduray community.

The multi-awarded Piang, who was principal of a Catholic school in Upi prior to his entry to politics, is an ethnic Teduray tribal timuay, or chieftain.

A number of LGUs, among them that of Datu Blah Sinsuat in Maguindanao, also received during Friday's event, held at the Shariff Kabunsuan Cultural Complex in the 32-hectare BARMM compound in Cotabato City, special awards for having cleared constituent-barangays from trafficking of illegal drugs.

Sinarimbo and Cusain also facilitated the release of awards with cash incentives to exemplary barangay governments and cause-oriented groups for having efficient community peace and security programs and for addressing clan wars via traditional conflict-resolution practices.

Friday's awarding rites was capped off with the launching of BARMM government's yearly grant, starting this year, of the Salamat Excellence Award for Leadership, or SEAL, for deserving local executives.

When choosing a weight-loss diet, scientifically consider the calories involved.

Diets are always going in and out of fashion. Perhaps you, too, have jumped on some bandwagons over the years. But the truth is, one size never fits all.

For the most part, diets are all about changing how many carbs, fats, and proteins you eat. Some diets are low in fat, while others prioritize foods that are high in protein or low in carbs.

One of the more popular diets in recent years has been the ketogenic diet. It's focused around a low intake of carbohydrates, and it basically gets the body to burn fat rather than carbs. This diet can promote weight loss – but it also demands potentially difficult lifestyle choices, like giving up bread.

The key message here is: When choosing a weight-loss diet, scientifically consider the calories involved.

Diets only work if you stick to them. And the more demanding a diet, the less likely you are to follow it to the letter. There's also another problem: many diets don't take into consideration the broader picture. What we should be asking is, what's really crucial for overall health?

The field of nutrition has long been focused on the minutiae. It can be hard to stick to all the advice that's out there. And diets make things even more confusing because they stem from a reductionist point of view. Eat this, they say, and don't eat that.

But there's something they ignore altogether, which is the important interplay between different foods and nutrients. Ultimately, when it comes to nutrition, the old adage is true: the total is greater than the sum of its parts.

One thing that many diets do have in common is counting calories. And, generally, if you're concerned about weight loss, you can always fall back on a time-proven rule – you must burn more calories than you consume. Other factors, such as having a good support group, are also important, of course. But ultimately it's all about the arithmetic of your calorie intake.

In the end, we each have different bodies and different microbiomes, so how we respond to different diets will vary. Luckily, we do know the nutrients we need – and how to obtain them in environmentally conscious ways. : source: Blinklist.com

Science and Research / Not All Fat is Bad For You
December 20, 2020, 07:03:27 AM
Not all fat is bad for you, and good bacteria can create a healthy microbiome in your gut.

American nutrition habits have a history of being anti-fat. But that's too simplistic. Just as there is "good" and "bad" cholesterol, there is also good and bad fat. Bacteria can be good and bad, too. This might sound confusing, so let's try and work some of these things out.

The key message here is: Not all fat is bad for you, and good bacteria can create a healthy microbiome in your gut.

There are two main types of fats: saturated and unsaturated. Unsaturated fat can be further broken down into subtypes, which include monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fats. The latter is perhaps easiest to recognize. These fats turn into liquids at room temperature; one example is olive oil.

Unsaturated fats are better for your heart. In fact, they can contain some very healthy ingredients, such as vitamin E, or fatty acids like omega-3 and omega-6. These substances are hard to find elsewhere. Polyunsaturated fats can help with blood sugar control and insulin resistance. This is great news for people who have type 2 diabetes.

Now, let's talk about bacteria. You may have heard the expression "gut microbiome." A whopping 90 percent of the bacteria that live inside your body can be found in the gut. They're doing essential work there; without them, there would be no metabolism as we know it. Some studies even suggest that you can control your microbiome – for example, you can improve it by eating a range of seasonal foods throughout the year.

Two categories of food help your microbiome: probiotic and prebiotic foods. Yogurt and other fermented foods, such as kimchi, contain probiotics – live microorganisms within the food itself. Prebiotics don't carry live microorganisms. Instead, they're full of things like fiber and refined starches, which are hugely beneficial for your gut bacteria.

In 2014, scientists analyzed 43 studies of probiotics. They found a 21 percent reduction in the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, such as bloating and abdominal pain, when people consumed fermented foods like yogurt. In some cases, yogurt has even been shown to help control diarrhea.

So, then, are bacteria and fat universally bad for your health? Well, by now we've learned that the answer is far from a straightforward "yes." - source: Blinklist.com

There are still misconceptions around dietary cholesterol and GMOs.

You may or may not remember, but there was a time when eggs were getting a bad rap in the press. The reason? Cholesterol. In 1968, the American Heart Association recommended that people consume no more than 300 mg of dietary cholesterol per day. It also suggested limiting egg intake to no more than three per week.

This all stemmed from the belief that the cholesterol we eat is directly linked to "bad cholesterol." Scientists refer to this substance as low-density lipoprotein – or LDL – cholesterol, which is linked to heart disease. But as the science of biochemistry and nutrition progressed, it became clear that the cholesterol in eggs has little to do with LDL.

The key message here is: There are still misconceptions around dietary cholesterol and GMOs.

It's true that eggs are high in cholesterol. Each egg contains around 185 mg of the substance. But two studies – one in 1999 and the other in 2013 – found no connection between egg consumption and coronary heart disease. There was also no link between eating eggs and having high levels of LDL.

There is still some uncertainty as to whether eggs make some people more likely to develop heart disease – in particular, those who live with type 2 diabetes. But at least the issue of cholesterol in eggs is sorted; the Dietary Guidelines for Americans no longer consider it a risk.

Debates around food don't stop at cholesterol, though. There's still a heated discussion about GMOs, or genetically modified organisms. In the US, such crops have been used since the 1990s. Disagreements about them are just another example of a misunderstood label.

There are a number of ways in which we can change a plant's genetic makeup in order to enhance or remove some of its traits. Numerous tests have shown that this kind of genetic engineering is perfectly safe. In fact, a meta-analysis of more than 1,500 studies showed that GM crops carried no significant health or environmental dangers.

Evidence suggests they can even be beneficial. Genetically modified crops use less water, create a smaller carbon footprint, and require fewer pesticides. In fact, one 2014 study revealed that GM crops resulted in a 22 percent higher crop yield, needed 37 percent less pesticide, and offered farmers nearly 70 percent more profit.

If all this sounds a bit confusing, don't worry. The science of food and nutrition is never black-and-white. In the next blink, we'll explore another common misconception. - source: Blinklist.com

Food labels are sometimes confusing, or meaningless, but they can still help you make better choices.

Food labels can be very confusing. Words like "conventional," "organic," and "natural" are bandied about a lot, but what do they actually mean? And what's the difference between cage-free and free-range eggs?

Let's dig into some common misconceptions and find out!

The key message here is: Food labels are sometimes confusing, or meaningless, but they can still help you make better choices.

Let's start with the word "organic." The finer points of what it means can differ from region to region, but essentially, organic refers to farming practices. For example, in the US, organic agriculture doesn't permit the use of genetic engineering or synthetic pesticides. That doesn't mean farmers steer clear of all pesticides; they can still use naturally derived substances like rotenone.

But beware; natural doesn't always mean healthy. Studies show that exposure to rotenone can increase your risk of Parkinson's disease. So, even if your produce is organic, it's still a good idea to wash it thoroughly before eating.

That brings us to the word "natural" – another misleading label. Ultimately, it's nothing more than a marketing gimmick – a way to make one food sound healthier than another. Many granola bars, for example, are labeled "natural." But they're still likely to be packed with added sugar.

And now, for the most confusing part: eggs. You've got cage-free, free-range, certified organic, pasture-raised – and the list goes on! But what's the difference between all these? Well, unlike some other labels, these terms do mean something.

For your average commercial egg producer, as many as four to twelve birds can be kept in a single battery cage. On average, they only have 67 square inches in which to move.

The "cage-free" label indicates that the birds live in confined warehouses rather than cages. But they each still only have a square foot of space. Conditions remain poor for the birds, and the chicken farmers have to contend with highly polluted air.

Free-range or free-roaming means the birds do spend some time outdoors – although how much, and what the word "outdoors" actually means, can vary. It may just be a small hatch leading to a tiny outdoor cement square that the birds may not even use.

Certified organic eggs must be free-range and meet the standards of the region's organic certification, even though the actual practices behind the eggs can vary.

Pasture-raised, on the other hand, is more specific. It means the birds spend their days outdoors and their nights in a barn. Their diets often include natural ingredients like grass and worms. This is widely seen as one of the most humane production methods. - source: Blinklist.com

Health and Food / Spectrum of Processed Foods
December 20, 2020, 06:51:12 AM
There is a spectrum of processed foods, and it includes both healthy and unhealthy items.

Technology has changed the world beyond recognition. And one of the many areas it has transformed is the food industry. Refrigeration makes it possible to ship food further than ever before. And advances in canning and packaging mean that food can now be preserved in mass quantities.

New chemical additives keep food from spoiling and give it a much longer shelf life. But what do we actually mean when we say "processed food"? Technically, this term could describe anything from cheese to Cheetos. So let's clear things up a bit.

The key message here is: There is a spectrum of processed foods, and it includes both healthy and unhealthy items.

Just about everything we eat these days is processed in some way. So it's helpful to think of most foods as existing on a spectrum. On the one end, we have "minimally processed," and on the other, there is "ultra-processed."

Minimally processed foods go through stages like washing, peeling, or dehydrating. Examples include canned fruit or dried beans. And ultra-processed foods are things like packaged bread, sugary snacks, breakfast cereals, potato chips, and frozen pizzas.

Generally speaking, minimally processed foods are the healthiest – but, of course, nothing is ever black and white. Processed foods like canned fish and frozen fruit and vegetables can be high in nutritional value. In fact, flash-frozen produce is often processed at peak freshness and can contain lots of vitamins and nutrients.

Counterintuitively, frozen fruit may even be better for you than the "fresh" produce that's traveled halfway around the world before arriving at your local supermarket.

The argument against ultra-processed food is much more clear-cut. It's bad for you – and for the planet. Not only do these types of foods contain lots of sugar and salt, they're also produced and packaged in ways that pollute the environment. Given the amount of processing and packaging involved, ultra-processed foods are considered "resource-intensive." These are the sorts of foods that negatively contribute to climate change.

Sadly, in many countries, people get a lot of their calories from foods that fall into this category. Ultra-processed foods are extremely popular in Brazil, Canada, Australia, Sweden, Norway, and the US. One study showed that Americans receive nearly 60 percent of their energy from ultra-processed foods.

If you do decide to buy prepackaged foods, it's always good to check the label for nutritional value. But, as we'll see in the next blink, packaging can also be misleading. - source: Blinklist
