There are high quality paraffins to make your candle in better quality, I mean if you make a deco candles. Kon sa Pinas kini dili magdugay ang imong kandila angin sa sobrang init.

thanks for the tips.  what i'm doing now is mixing 75% candle paraffin and 25% beeswax, mix in a dash of hardener, luster crystals, oil-based coloring and oil-based scents, put in the ref for 30 minutes, and voila, i have a candle that won't melt in any weather (thanks to the hardening additive), except of course when the wick is lighted.

i will continue to experiment so i could eventually come up with what i may like best.  so far, there are designs that i won't bother about again, like the big one that uses ice cubes in the mold.  it's weak and cumbersome.  :)

surprise!  here are candles molded in a 1-liter milk tetrapack and a disposable food container.  they happen to have the colors of fr chic's favorite football team.

morag tagalog pastry nga gitawag ug sapin-sapin.  the bigger candle had molten paraffin poured over ice cubes to achieve an antique effect.  result:  morag swiss cheese tungod sa buslot-buslot.
#41009

carrots in a basket design (thanks to the mold).  i don't intend to have more of this except for one more try just to find out if i could do it better.  i wouldn't want to light this kind of candle and see it melt.

napungil ang basket sa ubos kay wa koy alamag nga apil diay sa design mao nga wa nako maapil ug bubo.
#41010

my floating candles.  they're a beauty and easier to make (because of the ready-made molds).  pouring is my only problem here because they're so delicate.  practice, islander, practice.

designs:  hibiscus, lotus, daisy, butterfly (the heart and star are molded from an ice cube tray)
#41011
christmas ball candles (the mold here is rubbery, the specific term of which i forgot).  the toppings are still uneven.  i hope to perfect these in the coming days.

#41012
samples of recycled votive candle containers, an aluminum sausage can, and a jam bottle (covered to maximize the scent) .  i can use these over and over.  (note the uneven toppings of the votive candles.  i still have to practice pouring and proper timing.)

#41013
a sample of a candle decorated with little "wickless" candles molded from ice cube trays.  it's a palm tree and the sun, red on red (muted, so to speak).  i figured it would be too garish to have too many colors in one candle, especially if the candle is not massive.

#41014
those small things without wicks were molded from ice cube trays.  they serve as candle decors.

#41015
the results:

p.s. they smell sweet because i mix in oil-based scents much more than what is mixed in commercial scented candles.
#41016
the molds:

making do with what are in the kitchen, i.e. empty bottles, ice cube trays, empty sausage cans as long as these are made of aluminum, and recycled votive candle containers.
#41017
well, since i went sleepless for almost 24 hours after that sudden evacuation over the tsunami alert, i got to spend time between tb and candle making.  i'm still in the learning stage of candle making, experimenting much and making mistakes along the way.  as long as i don't burn myself, i must say it is a worthwhile hobby.

more:

Attempts to enact legislation promoting anti-family programs receive huge financial assistance and provide alluring incentives to persuade our politicians to commit themselves to their advocacy.  Foreign-funded lobby groups have been operating for more than a decade to openly advocate for the enactment of population control laws, as well as abortion-friendly laws in pursuit of the UN Cairo Conference objective of universal abortion rights.  It makes one wonder why countries with below replacement fertility rates, desperate for babies and spending huge sums of money to encourage their own citizens to bear more children, contradict themselves by spending huge sums of money to suppress our population growth.

All these are consistent with Henry Kissinger’s 1974 National Security Study Memorandum 200 entitled “Implications of Worldwide Population Growth for US Security and Overseas Interest” which identified the increase in world population as inimical to the interest of the West.   This document has been coming out in recent public debates on reproductive health policies, and is available on the internet.  Do not reproductive health advocates bow down to their impositions?  Is it not more correct to say that they are the ones imposing their policies on our country?
#41058
more excerpts from the pastoral letter:

12.  What are some experiences in other countries in relation to reproductive health and related to family and life issues?

Family and Life workers and families in the Philippines, to whom this Catechism is primarily directed, could easily and clearly see the probable goals of reproductive health and rights advocates in the country, by looking at what is happening abroad.  In some countries, school clinics are required to inform parents if their child has been treated for a minor scratch; on the other hand, the same school clinics are PROHIBITED from informing parents if their child seeks treatment for abdominal pains caused by a recent abortion.  In other places, children are required to obtain parental consent for a tattoo, but not for an abortion.

A high-ranking official of a foreign country massively funding reproductive health services in the Philippines categorically stated last April that, “We happen to think that family planning is an important part of women’s health, and reproductive health includes access to abortion.”  A local columnist wrote in November 2008 that “In Mexico City… the long struggle for reproductive health and rights culminated in the recent passage of a law lifting all restrictions on abortion.”  Many countries all over the world and the United Nations agencies work for reproductive health and rights until they have fully facilitated access to abortion.

Underlying this concept of reproductive or sexual health and rights is a view that radically separates sexuality, procreation and the complementariness between men and women.  It is a view that identifies pleasure as the ultimate goal of sexuality and reduces procreation as a function of the health care systems.  It also implies that men and women relate in temporary and modifiable unions that are a far cry from the beauty of conjugal love that is fully human, total, faithful, exclusive and open to life.

Men and women are persons before all else, and for this reason sexual behavior cannot be used only for pleasure.  Otherwise it would mean using a person simply as an object.

Re: Let's Read the Reproductive Health (RH) Bill
« Reply #11 on: October 09, 2010, 09:22:08 PM »

at this point, i'll cease and desist (;D!) first from posting the body parts (ugh!) of House Bill 96 to face the posts of www.tubagbohol.com re proposed Reproductive Health and Population Development Act of 2008, otherwise known as House Bill 5043, whose previous incarnation is House Bill 4110.  (both failed passage in congress.)

these are excerpts of the pastoral letter entitled A Catechism on Family and Life for the 2010 Elections (Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines, Episcopal Commission on Family and Life, December 27, 2009 â€" Feast of the Holy Family), which also covered House Bill 5043 of 2008:

11.  What is reproductive health?

The UN defines reproductive health as the state of physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity in all matters relating to the reproductive system and to its functions and processes. It states that people have the right to a “satisfying and safe sex life.”  The conjugal union is natural and proper in marriage, but in contrast, reproductive health disposes all people, including children and adolescents, to the sexual act and the freedom to decide if, when and how often to reproduce, provided that these are not against the law. (UN Cairo Conference, Program of Action).

Following this definition, if having a satisfying sex life results in an unwanted pregnancy, the mental anguish this causes will negatively affect the person’s mental and social well-being unless one has access to contraception and abortion.  This is the convoluted reasoning behind UN agencies’ insistence that reproductive health necessarily presupposes access to contraception and abortion.

Furthermore, the Reproductive Health bill (House Bill 5043), which carries the same definition of reproductive health, will penalize with one to six months imprisonment, and/or 10-50 thousand pesos fine, parents who for example prevent their grade school and high school children from using contraceptives, or from having satisfying and safe sex.  This item, along with the fact that certain contraceptives actually cause the abortion of 5-day old babies, is often ignored in supposedly unbiased and scientific surveys on the acceptability of the Reproductive Health bill.

All these are in the name of reproductive health and rights.  What about the rights of parents? And the rights of the unborn?

#41060
there are previous threads in this forum that have tackled the many sides of the rh bill.  tackling your valid points would mean a repeat of the pro and con arguments in those threads.  some of those, anyway:

Re: Catholic church warns civil disobedience vs. RH bill...Unsa imo opinion ani?
« Reply #22 on: October 02, 2010, 06:58:17 PM »

my thoughts, scarbzy migs...

it looks like it's difficult to distinguish between what is practical and what choice means for the two sides.  we know that both are agreed on family planning, it is in the means that the two sides diverge.  natural as against artificial, as we all know.

the church is well aware that there are artificial contraceptives that are abortifacients (these kill the fertilized ovum).  it is also aware that millions are allegedly involved in the lobby for the passage of the rh bill.

those big pharmaceuticals are the very sector that stands to profit most once hundreds of thousands of contraceptives are distributed for free.  these contraceptives are not donated by big pharmaceuticals.  often as not, these are paid for by our government with aid money from western countries and which we will have to pay for.  (there's no such thing as a free 'aid'.  it's always a loan in the guise of an aid, and usually the 'donor' that calls the shots includes a stipulation on population control, with specific time-bounded targets that practicality ensures can only be met by artificial means, with contraceptives bought by us from their own big pharmaceuticals.  the more our government follows this stipulation, the more will the donor release subsequent aids.  well, geopolitics equals multinational big businesses.)

some of us with some background on big-time project proposals for funding must be aware that sometimes aid that's entered as 'cash' on paper is actually the cost of the items that are 'donated'.  heaven help us if we have to pay, because it's a loan, for contraceptives worth millions, because the donor country had already bought them for us from their own pharmaceuticals.

these are just some of the things that have to be cleared out by the two sides, i suppose, to erase the mistrust.

lest we forget, wasn't it third world women who unwittingly became laboratory rats when the first contraceptive pills went on trial?  these were reportedly distributed first in third world countries, as aids, before these were made available in the countries that manufactured them.  all because the population of third world countries is the whipping boy of the west when it comes to poverty.  tell that to the homeless in new york.

just a thought... maybe the philippines should stop calling the sea 'south china sea' for starters.  naming the whole area after one country is encouraging for that country to claim everything in it as its own.

in the middle east, there's a disputed island named kish that's being claimed by both the united arab emirates and iran.  naturally, it remains unsettled until now.  the thing is what used to be the 'persian gulf' surrounded by most of these middle east countries (and where kish is) is now called the 'arabian gulf'.  there really was no sense naming the gulf after only one country such as iran (persia).

why a sea surrounded by many countries including the philippines be named only after china challenges one's imagination.

why couldn't the state be part of the first line of defense so we can have an institutional triumvirate instead?  if the state acts as the last line of defense, if it shows itself as the last line of defense, it may just manage to make it easy to go through the first line because there's a last line anyway.

p.s.  how terrible can it be for a mother when her 8-year-old boy asks what a condom is because its emblazoned on big billboards dotting manila's thoroughfares.

on the other hand, it seems like only yesterday when the japanese were predicted to take over the u.s. in terms of economic and technological might.  some predictions just don't come to pass.

in the case of china, well, one never knows how long the powers-that-be or the ideology that gives them power can stay.  realpolitik rides on the wings of change and a people get restless for some change.  who would have thought that hosni mubarak can go that way...

i can only hope that it doesn't bully its smaller neighbors.  my only concern as a filipino is its insistence on claiming all of the spratlys, saying that such claim is historically based, while our claim is only part of the island chain, within the existing UN Convention on the Law of the Sea that stipulates that a country owns the sea and the resources thereof, including the seabed and rocks or islets, within 200 miles of its territory, which is the location of the kalayaan islands (the particular islands that our country claims; not the whole spratlys chain).

should china bully its way through and prevail in its claim of all of the spratlys, what would keep it from claiming the philippines as well, using the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea if it serves its interests, because if all of the spratlys go to china it would mean that the philippines is within 200 miles of chinese territory?

i shudder to think of a malevolent superpower.  i'd rather have the u.s., hands down.  you know, like they say, we'd rather have a bastard that we know than a bastard that we don't know.

we prayed together on the road.  how i hated the sound of those regular sirens.  we called the kids back home to assure them that we're fine.  they were already praying the rosary.

three hours later, after the estimated tsunami hit and by heaven's grace nothing happened, we felt it was already safe to go home despite the advice of a 24-hour wait.  we felt our hosts needed to rest and we may have gotten in the way as they took pains to entertain us.

the stories after the fact came out this morning.

story 1:  stores and restaurants were closed by 6pm.  only gasoline stations were opened.  and only filipino and bangladeshi staff were left behind to carry on.  it was as if my stomach was hit by pacquiao when i saw this gasoline boy from cotabato who happens to be my friend going about his usual routine.

story 2:  there was a boat ready for the american embassy staff and american citizens, who reportedly sought safety at their embassy, which is located on high ground.  their number is manageable, being only around 600.  filipinos are around 4,000.  we had to trust our own resources.

story 3:  the church, the sacred heart church run by jesuits, was filled with filipinos.  the filipino choir members were all there as well, with their 15-year-old organist (a personal favorite boy of mine) who had sardonically declared:  we practice one more time before we die.

story 4:  iglesia ni cristo people stayed in their own church as well, which is right beside the sea.  it is said that they chose to wait for the sea to disappear (the first sign of a tsunami) and take it as a tip to bail out and run for their lives.

'God is in his heaven and all’s right with the world.'

Isles, pray for the best. I hope that all will be safe for you and all our kababayans in our beloved Philippines. Having recently visited Southern Leyte , met the people and saw the places, i was scared. Hearing the news that the alarm has receded, was a blessing. we weren't alarmed initially, until i saw the nearby hospital evacuate its patients.  with the sound of frequent sirens on a starless and moonless night, my mood was ripe for fear.  this is serious and we mustn't take chances, i said to the banana republic as i packed our valuables.  he, too, did his own packing.  i told our household help to do the same.

i was saddened by the thought that we couldn't take all our cats along.  more so those 11 homeless ones who were already at the balcony, waiting for feeding time.  close to tears, i decided to take along only the smallest and sickliest one so i didn't have to go through the grisly process of selecting favorites.  i had to fortify myself to be able to function.

let me come back and find you here, i told our cats as i put off the lights.

forty-five minutes before the estimated tsunami time, we were ready to go to high ground, which meant going to a fellow filipino's residence that's located on higher ground inland, just a 10-minute drive away barring traffic.

never had i been so focused while driving; i actually hate night driving as don't trust my night vision, but last night was different.  traffic was unusually heavy.  strangely, i was also unusually daring.  luckily, i managed to get only one honk from an irate driver when i cut through.

there's something in the air about an impending disaster as there's something about us as we cope with it.  we can but hope for the best and expect the worst.

presently i'm in a place that the creator has placed like a jewel in the pacific rim.

japan had that current tragedy of a tremblor and, like some parts of the philippines and other countries in the pacific rim, this here was placed on full tsunami alert.

we were unaware of it but for a german friend we met at the grocery store after my visit to the cat shelter.  then we got home and saw our landlady preparing to go to higher ground.  she, too, told us about the tsunami alert.

we happen to live in a house where i can see mangroves and the sea from the kitchen sink window, the sea being just some twenty meters away.

The CBCP issued a pastoral letter against the bill last January 31, where they stated that they are against the non-consideration of moral principles; anti-life, anti-natal and contraceptive mentality reflected in media and some proposed legislation; efforts to railroad the RH bill; the trajectory of the bill toward population control; and the use of public funds for contraceptives, sterilization and compulsory sex education.

can anything be worse than these points?  i personally hate the sight of those big billboards advertising condoms in manila.  we may be losing a big part of what we are as a nation.  how sad. :(
