Having to Cope with a Tsunami Alert
« on: March 13, 2011, 02:29:29 AM »
presently i'm in a place that the creator has placed like a jewel in the pacific rim.

japan had that current tragedy of a tremblor and, like some parts of the philippines and other countries in the pacific rim, this here was placed on full tsunami alert.

we were unaware of it but for a german friend we met at the grocery store after my visit to the cat shelter.  then we got home and saw our landlady preparing to go to higher ground.  she, too, told us about the tsunami alert.

we happen to live in a house where i can see mangroves and the sea from the kitchen sink window, the sea being just some twenty meters away.

You should be able to relax now... the high level TSUNAMI alert has been downgraded mag-TSANAMI (green ones prefered) full cup enjoyment! Stay safe though!  :D

we weren't alarmed initially, until i saw the nearby hospital evacuate its patients.  with the sound of frequent sirens on a starless and moonless night, my mood was ripe for fear.  this is serious and we mustn't take chances, i said to the banana republic as i packed our valuables.  he, too, did his own packing.  i told our household help to do the same.

i was saddened by the thought that we couldn't take all our cats along.  more so those 11 homeless ones who were already at the balcony, waiting for feeding time.  close to tears, i decided to take along only the smallest and sickliest one so i didn't have to go through the grisly process of selecting favorites.  i had to fortify myself to be able to function.

let me come back and find you here, i told our cats as i put off the lights.

forty-five minutes before the estimated tsunami time, we were ready to go to high ground, which meant going to a fellow filipino's residence that's located on higher ground inland, just a 10-minute drive away barring traffic.

never had i been so focused while driving; i actually hate night driving as don't trust my night vision, but last night was different.  traffic was unusually heavy.  strangely, i was also unusually daring.  luckily, i managed to get only one honk from an irate driver when i cut through.

there's something in the air about an impending disaster as there's something about us as we cope with it.  we can but hope for the best and expect the worst.

Isles, pray for the best. I hope that all will be safe for you and all our kababayans in our beloved Philippines. I was very worried for my relatives in Southern Leyte when I saw that the tsunami path was headed towards Leyte. Having recently visited Southern Leyte , met the people and saw the places, i was scared. Hearing the news that the alarm has receded, was a blessing. Please know that I am keeping you all in my prayers.

Pray, always pray..

Be safe.

Thanks to God who has reduced the waves and the tsunami alert. May God continue to protect and cover the Philippines with his Powerful Hands.

Jesus silenced the waves when the apostles woke Him from his sleep. Why would not our Lord and Savior do the same if we not ask him in our prayers.

Ampo ta tanan kanunay.

Ms Islander, you made the right decision because "tsunami can travel as fast as jet plane," according to this news report.

Agence France-Presse

A once-exotic word that has now entered the everyday lexicon, a tsunami refers to a shock of water that spreads through the sea, usually after a sub-sea floor quake.

A section of seabed is thrust up or driven down by violent movement of the Earth’s crust.

The rift displaces vast quantities of water that move as waves, able to cover enormous distances over open water, sometimes at the speed of a jet plane.[/url]

An 8.9-magnitude quake off Japan’s northern coast on Friday generated a 10-meter tsunami that picked up ships and dashed them into coastal towns. Buildings and vehicles were carried away as the huge wall of water swept inland.

The word “tsunami” comes from the Japanese words for “harbor” and “wave.”

At their point of generation, tsunamis have a relatively small wave height, with peaks far apart.

As the waves approach the shore they are compressed by the shelving of the sea floor, reducing the distance between the peaks and vastly increasing the height.

To those on the shore, the first sign of something amiss can be the retreat of the sea, which is followed by the arrival of large waves.

Seabed exposed

“The sea was driven back, and its waters flowed away to such an extent that the deep seabed was laid bare and many kinds of sea creatures could be seen,” wrote Roman historian Ammianus Marcellus, awed at a tsunami that struck the then-thriving port of Alexandria in 365 AD.

“Huge masses of water flowed back when least expected, and now overwhelmed and killed many thousands of people... Some great ships were hurled by the fury of the waves onto the rooftops, and others were thrown up to 3 kilometers from the shore.”

Why the high death tolls

Several factors determine the height and destructiveness of a tsunami.

They include the size of the quake, the volume of displaced water, the topography of the sea floor as the waves race to the coast and whether there are natural obstacles that dampen the shock.

Destruction of protective mangroves and coral reefs and the building of homes or hotels on exposed beaches are fingered as leading causes of high death tolls from tsunamis.

Large quakes are the main drivers of tsunamis, but the phenomenon can also be sparked by other cataclysmic events, such as volcanic eruptions and even landslides.

In 1883, a volcano shattered the Pacific island of Krakatoa, causing a blast so loud that it could be heard 4,500 km away, followed by a tsunami that killed some 30,000 people.

The tsunami of December 2004 in the Indian Ocean was caused by a monstrous 9.1-magnitude earthquake off the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

It released energy equivalent to 23,000 of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima, according to the US Geological Survey. Some 220,000 people in 11 nations were killed, many of them thousands of kilometers from the epicenter.

Mindanao waves

On Aug. 17, 1976, a 7.9-magnitude earthquake in Mindanao spawned a tsunami that affected more than 700 km of coastline around the Moro Gulf in the North Celebes Sea—the largest tsunami-inducing quake to have occurred in Mindanao, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

Nearly 5,000 died while some 10,000 were injured in the Mindanao quake and tsunami, according to Phivolcs. The World Almanac put the Mindanao death toll at 8,000. More than 2,000 went missing.

Global monitoring

The Pacific Ocean is particularly prone to earthquakes and therefore to tsunamis.

But research has found that, over the millennia, tsunamis have occurred in many parts of the world, including the Atlantic and Mediterranean. A global monitoring network, overseen by the United Nations, has been set in place to alert areas at risk. With reports from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, National Geographic and Inquirer Research

we prayed together on the road.  how i hated the sound of those regular sirens.  we called the kids back home to assure them that we're fine.  they were already praying the rosary.

three hours later, after the estimated tsunami hit and by heaven's grace nothing happened, we felt it was already safe to go home despite the advice of a 24-hour wait.  we felt our hosts needed to rest and we may have gotten in the way as they took pains to entertain us.

the stories after the fact came out this morning.

story 1:  stores and restaurants were closed by 6pm.  only gasoline stations were opened.  and only filipino and bangladeshi staff were left behind to carry on.  it was as if my stomach was hit by pacquiao when i saw this gasoline boy from cotabato who happens to be my friend going about his usual routine.

story 2:  there was a boat ready for the american embassy staff and american citizens, who reportedly sought safety at their embassy, which is located on high ground.  their number is manageable, being only around 600.  filipinos are around 4,000.  we had to trust our own resources.

story 3:  the church, the sacred heart church run by jesuits, was filled with filipinos.  the filipino choir members were all there as well, with their 15-year-old organist (a personal favorite boy of mine) who had sardonically declared:  we practice one more time before we die.

story 4:  iglesia ni cristo people stayed in their own church as well, which is right beside the sea.  it is said that they chose to wait for the sea to disappear (the first sign of a tsunami) and take it as a tip to bail out and run for their lives.

'God is in his heaven and all’s right with the world.'

Isles. I do feel for you and the people.

On February the 3rd, 2011, the city of Chicago was hit with the largest snow storm the city had experienced in almost 100 years. The city, in a day's time, was hit about 4 feet of snow. That's the background.

Now let me tell you (and the rest of tubag bohol dot com) a personal story that intertwines my experience with that of the rest of the city.

During the storm, the main highway that cuts through the city, which runs and connects northern chicago with southern chicago, Lake Shore Drive (North and South) was pummeled by snow. The high way, which is located near the lake, was hit by not only 4 feet of snow but freezing wind chills that came from the lake. The highway was closed. And this included all the cars in it. Literally, thousands of cars and thousands of people were stuck in their cars with no help for hours. It was hard because the city staff and emergency personnel were being utilized during the snow storm as there were emergencies all around the city.

I literally was driving back from the hospital to home. After a 12 hour work shift. I was so tired. Then i was stuck in the highway by S. Fullerton Expressway for almost 6 hours. Then as i was waiting, and praying to God for help, a man and group of people were directing those who had SUVs/ Trucks out of the highway by telling us to go through the underpasses. Tho it was the opposite direction.

I put my Mitsubishi in 4 wheel drive / mountain climb mode and was able to slowly free myself from the snowy catacombs. I literally drove through the city , which was covered in 3-4 feet of snow. Police cars were stuck, Ambulances were tossed over, City Buses were flipped to the side, the whole city was dead and seemed deserted.

Chicago. The "Windy City". The third largest city in the United States and the financial capital of the Midwest. The city was Closed.

For 3 days the city was closed. By the time i got home (2 hour drive , tho only 5 mile distance) , i parked my car in a snow-filled roadway. The next morning, i went outside to see what happened. My car was covered literally with snow. Then temperatures fell to below freezing. -18 DEGREES Farenheit.

I found out in the news that the thousands of people that were stuck in Lake Shore Drive that night were rescued by emergency perssonel. And most of them were taken Sacred Heart Hospital (a catholic hospital) and other hospitals that were filled to the brim.

Amazingly. No casualties in the frozen highway.

I remember praying as i was driving back home. And He guided me home.

Prayer is the best tool when almost everything seems lost. :)

Moral: Trust in God's Power and in His Angels.

That night, those two young men who steered me and many others to safety, and directed our escape in the underpass. I have a feeling that they were indeed Angels. I remember one man. He had the brightest, most beautiful blue eyes. Dark brown hair. And such a very comforting and reassuring voice.

He knocked on my window, as i was in my car praying the rosary (and worried, because the snow was literally covering my car tires already).

As i was praying, those two young men knocked on my window.

I do believe they were Angels. In the guise of man. :)

God is Good. God is indeed Merciful. And Hears our Prayers...

"Misty water-colored memory of the way things were..."

Makahinumdom man hinuon ko sa TINUIG namong "kulba-hinam" ug "maka-paralyzed" nga true-to-life drama everytime nga adunay emergency news/alert nga dunay dakong bagyo (hurricane) og posibleng dakong baha (tidal surge as high as 30 feet) nga moabotay sa Mississippi Delta (New Orleans)... di jud nuon lalim.  :-[

But, still, people, including me, choose to stay and live in this place!!!  ;D

If my guess is right (and I'm usually wrong sa unang guess), kanang ika-2 nga kanta is a Zydeco music, a.k.a. Cajun music... mostly upbeat and danceable pero dili disco but polka-type dance ahihihi  ;D

Sam-POLKA nga Cajun music...

I will...

Here's something to calm down your fears or what-have-you...

http://www.artgarfunkel.com/lyrics/another.html

Close your eyes my pretty child,
Though the night is dark and the wind is wild,
I will stand beside your bed,
Tonight there is nothing you need fear or dread.

You can sleep now, go to sleep,
The rain falls and the windows weep,
I'm standing by to sing a lullaby.
