Isles. I do feel for you and the people.
On February the 3rd, 2011, the city of Chicago was hit with the largest snow storm the city had experienced in almost 100 years. The city, in a day's time, was hit about 4 feet of snow. That's the background.
Now let me tell you (and the rest of tubag bohol dot com) a personal story that intertwines my experience with that of the rest of the city.
During the storm, the main highway that cuts through the city, which runs and connects northern chicago with southern chicago, Lake Shore Drive (North and South) was pummeled by snow. The high way, which is located near the lake, was hit by not only 4 feet of snow but freezing wind chills that came from the lake. The highway was closed. And this included all the cars in it. Literally, thousands of cars and thousands of people were stuck in their cars with no help for hours. It was hard because the city staff and emergency personnel were being utilized during the snow storm as there were emergencies all around the city.
I literally was driving back from the hospital to home. After a 12 hour work shift. I was so tired. Then i was stuck in the highway by S. Fullerton Expressway for almost 6 hours. Then as i was waiting, and praying to God for help, a man and group of people were directing those who had SUVs/ Trucks out of the highway by telling us to go through the underpasses. Tho it was the opposite direction.
I put my Mitsubishi in 4 wheel drive / mountain climb mode and was able to slowly free myself from the snowy catacombs. I literally drove through the city , which was covered in 3-4 feet of snow. Police cars were stuck, Ambulances were tossed over, City Buses were flipped to the side, the whole city was dead and seemed deserted.
Chicago. The "Windy City". The third largest city in the United States and the financial capital of the Midwest. The city was Closed.
For 3 days the city was closed. By the time i got home (2 hour drive , tho only 5 mile distance) , i parked my car in a snow-filled roadway. The next morning, i went outside to see what happened. My car was covered literally with snow. Then temperatures fell to below freezing. -18 DEGREES Farenheit.
I found out in the news that the thousands of people that were stuck in Lake Shore Drive that night were rescued by emergency perssonel. And most of them were taken Sacred Heart Hospital (a catholic hospital) and other hospitals that were filled to the brim.
Amazingly. No casualties in the frozen highway.
I remember praying as i was driving back home. And He guided me home.
Prayer is the best tool when almost everything seems lost.
