Little Isle came running into the house after school one day, shouting, "Daddy! Daddy! I got a 100 in school today!"

"That's great, Sweetheart," said her daddy.

"Come in to the living room and tell me about it."

"Well," began the confession, "I got 50 in Spelling, 30 in Math and 20 in Science."

The PFF caption says:

Was Marcos a Hero?

Answering itself... it says; No. But he was a soldier.

Explanation:

The short dialogue cum news caption is stressing a propaganda line to denigrate the memory of Marcos, his life as a soldier and as an honorable person. Of course a soldier and a hero are not the same but actually the PFF caption is hiding something.

It did not ask the question; "Marcos a medal of valor awardee; is he worthy to be called a hero?"

heroes are deemed worthy of the name, so why should the article's writer still ask if he were worthy of the name when he can settle for simply asking whether he was a hero or not?

Quote
Now the complete idea of the PFF is written below.

The PFF wrote:

"Nearly 200 congressmen have signed the resolution. Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr., son of the dictator, has been pressing since February for the burial among dead soldiers of his father, who, he says, was a war hero."

Reply:

Saying that his father is a hero... I think this is another invention of the PFF. Of course if Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has the evidence that his father is a hero... I think there's no need to blow his own trumpet... but let the record shows it!

yet trumpet ferdinand marcos jr did.  in fact, the reason why the whole family decided against burying marcos's body permanently elsewhere was because they themselves wanted him buried at the libingan ng mga bayani, all these years lobbying with political friends for support, and all these years insisting, trumpeting, that their family head was a hero.  and the family has the evidence, marcos's own account of his war exploits and the medals themselves.

Quote
The PFF continues:

This was disputed during the campaign for the 1986 snap election. The dispute had to do with whether Marcos deserved all of the 27 war medals that he claimed he had earned. There were questions about the authenticity of those medals, but Marcos insisted they were authentic. The opposition couldn’t care lessâ€"the only thing that was in dispute was whether he deserved them all."

Reply:

The saying goes this way; "a fish is caught by its own mouth." In the same manner as the PFF saying that; "This was disputed [medals of Marcos] during the campaign for the 1986 snap election"... is like the PFF is caught by its own words. The dispute is clear that the Marcos political enemies are only taking the "medals" as the issue to denigrate him. It is my belief that Marcos deserves all the 27 war medals awarded to him.

isn't it that the pff only reported what was going on?  naturally, it was politics as usual.  it’s not as if we don’t know that political campaigns in our political culture will not always bear the mark of mutual mudslinging.  it wasn’t as if marcos and his minions didn’t undertake their own negative tirades against their political enemies.  remember the “walang alam” slogan against cory aquino?  there was, and there will always be, mutual denigration.

Quote
According to Brig. Gen. Restituto Aguilar, historical consultant of the AFP Museum said; “Those who contest the authenticity of his medals should substantiate their allegations. It shall undergo investigations and should follow a process”.

spoken like a true functionary.  but of course, as a historical consultant he shouldn't take sides.  the statement does not in any way contradict either the truth or untruth of the authenticity of the medals.

meantime, when something is questioned, there must be some weakness in that thing.  your belief that marcos deserved all his 27 war medals must have some basis, such as your readings and your choice of what to believe in your readings.  that’s your right.  this is mine:  what are the bases for the doubts cast over marcos’s medals?  in general, some of the medals were earned or bestowed on him in accordance with his own reports and claims.  thus, the medals may be authentic but the reasons for their awarding could be fake.  (please note the qualifications of “may be” and “could be”.)

two examples stand out.  the u.s. army never acknowledged the existence of the guerrilla unit named “ang maharlika” and marcos was never rewarded for his claimed bravery at the battle of bessang pass.  consider this:

"Marcos’s daring war adventures first saw print in a 1948 magazine series.  The young lawyer supposedly had formed a 9,200-strong guerrilla group called Mga Maharlika (The Nobles) in North Luzon.  Unmindful of danger, he led more than 300 skirmishes with the mighty Japanese Imperial Army, for which he was decorated 27 times.  Thus did Marcos earn in 1947 a post in the Philippine commission that lobbied with the US for veterans’ benefits.   Riding on the daredevil acclaim, he handily won in 1949 a congressional seat.

If there were doubts then about Marcos’s claims, nobody said so aloud. Only in 1982 did war vets begin to murmur, when Marcos, ten years into his military rule, alleged himself to be the real hero of the Battle of Bessang Pass.  Overrunning the gorge was vital to the US Army’s pursuit of General Yamashita in the Cordillera Range.  Marcos mentioned General Volkmann as confiding that Yamashita almost surrendered to the Maharlika guerrillas.  War historians grumbled, for nowhere was Marcos near the battleground."

I'm quite amused by the acceptance of the PFF that; "Marcos fought for the country’s freedom"... but it continues to say that Marcos "contrived to suppress [that] our freedom"; which is wrong! Marcos did not create the situation to suppress our freedom. The situation was created by the NPA when they bombed the Liberal Party rally at Plaza Miranda. Marcos is a patriot and he did not want our country to be devoured by Communism which is an alien ideology to the Filipinos. He knows of a threat by the NPA, so he took a preemptive action ahead of the NPA by declaring Martial Law.

yes, marcos fought for the country’s freedom, the freedom from foreign domination, like thousands of other filipino soldiers during world war 2.

when the philippine free press points out that he “contrived to suppress [that] freedom”, it meant that marcos took away the democratic freedom that was known by the filipino people, that freedom for which those soldiers both dead and living fought for during world war 2, first with the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus, then by martial law, and later by instituting constitutional change (through a rubber stamp constitutional convention) to continue to hold the reins of power.

the bogeyman of communism was his most convenient reason then, from the plaza miranda bombing (as yet unsolved) to the supposed ambush of enrile (solved, with enrile admitting that it was plain drama).  even the assassination of benign aquino jr was at once blamed on the communists.

was the communists’ npa ever a threat to national security in the real sense of the word?  on hindsight, but for the usual government yarn then, the more threatening at the time was our own military that had more political power and better weapons than the ragtag npa, which didn’t have the support of the greater part of the population.  but the communists provided the marcos government with the best excuse to wield power sans check and balance.

In many cases of neglect in which an investigator believes that the cruelty occurred out of ignorance, the investigator may attempt to educate the pet owner, then revisit the situation.  In more severe cases, exigent circumstances may require that the animal be removed for veterinary care.

Active cruelty implies malicious intent, as when a person has deliberately and intentionally caused harm to an animal, and is sometimes referred to as NAI (Non-Accidental Injury).  Acts of intentional animal cruelty may be indicators of serious psychological problems.  There is an intrinsic link between battered pets and battered women and children.  The likelihood that women's shelter personnel will encounter women and children who have been threatened by batterers using animal abuse as a weapon is high.  This is because more families in America have pets than have children.  Secondly, the majority of pet owners are themselves parents with children.

Thirdly, 64.1% of households with children under age 6, and 74.8% of households with children over age 6, also have pets.

Lastly, as many as 71% of pet-owning women seeking shelter at safe houses have reported that their partner had threatened and/or actually hurt or killed one or more of their pets; 32% of these women reported that one or more of their children had also hurt or killed pets.

Battered women report that they are prevented from leaving their abusers because they fear what will happen to the animals in their absence.  Animal abuse sometimes is used as a form of intimidation in domestic disputes.

In theory and practice

There are many reasons why individuals abuse animals.  Animal cruelty covers a wide range of actions (or lack of action).  Learning about animal abuse has revealed patterns of behavior employed by abusers.

Animal cruelty is often broken down into two main categories: active and passive, also referred to as commission and omission, respectively.

Passive cruelty is typified by cases of neglect, in which the cruelty is a lack of action rather than the action itself.  Examples of neglect are starvation, dehydration, parasite infestations, allowing a collar to grow into an animal’s skin, inadequate shelter in extreme weather conditions, and failure to seek veterinary care when necessary.

tradition has to be respected, but does it have to be gory?  does it need to torture animals to death?

some traditions die because as civilization develops man realizes that there are just some practices that belong to an earlier age when man was less enlightened.  an example is cannibalism.  another is the hindu practice of sati (or suttee), the widow burning of old, when the wife was "supposed to cast away any sins the husband had committed, making him able to have a happy afterlife. This was voluntary for the widow, but they were put under much pressure to do it and were looked upon as a bad person if they didn’t go through with it." (wiki)

sadly, nepal still practiced sati well into the early 20th century while india had theirs officially eliminated in the 1800s.  who knows, this gory practice of animal cruelty will die out too, sooner than later.

The Philippines Free Press again as it was before Martial Law is a staunch Marcos critic. Today the PFF don't have a living Marcos to be lambasted by their columnists. What they have is only a corpse but still the hatred won't stop. The PFF wants Marcos body to be buried in the Libingan with only the word "soldier" to be written in his tombstone... sort of hiding his grave away from the people. Just like Jose Rizal our national hero was buried in an unmarked grave... the Spanish authority wanted his grave unknown to the people. They put his initial in reversed as; "RPJ". I can see the coincidence if the PFF idea is to be followed.

the philippine free press magazine has always been a critic of any wrongdoings of any administration, marcos’s or not, long before anyone of us here at tb was probably born.  it is not as if its opinion makers (the columnists) focused only on marcos’s time.  it did have more of marcos, because there was more to write about him considering the number of years he had stayed at malacañang.

This is the irony in the life of Marcos because the perceived wrongdoings and allegation of corruption attributed to him and his family have been designed to erase his name in the pages of Philippine history. This un-Filipino way of treating Marcos stemmed not from the culture of our people but I believe this is a culture of the illustrado. As my older folks narrated to us; this alien culture came from Europe and introduced by the Spaniards to a few Filipinos especially people who came from peninsular Spain and the Filipino mestizos. It was also brought to the province of Bohol. This culture was a kind of apartheid and most of the Tagbilaranons abhorred it. They coined this cultural division as; "taga ubos ug taga ibabaw". The "taga ubos" were only a few and because of inter-marriages between the "taga ubos and taga ibabaw" we fused together to become one people.

the irony in the life of marcos is that he made his own life ironic.  there's no doubt about his sincerity when he ran for the top office of the land in the beginning.  along the way, he fell victim, or he allowed himself to be victimized, by the heady addiction of power, and ended up refusing to go down by whatever means.  he was a despot, no matter how we look at it, and like most other despots in the world, he wanted to keep power within his family.  the fact that he had a memo prepared for his wife to take over his presidency of the land is not a media invention, as we may know.

whatever wrong values were brought along by our colonizers have nothing to do with his decision to stay on and on and on.

as the rest of us wait for more reasons on how "to try to live with it", here's an unemotional take on this topic:

Was Marcos a Hero?

No. But he was a soldier

HOME Marcos’s family brings his body home from Hawaii in 1993 (Photo: Jun Camarillo)

SORSOGON Rep. Salvador Escudero III has introduced a resolution supporting the burial of the waxy corpse of dictator Ferdinand Marcos in the Libingan ng mga Bayaniâ€"the misnamed heroes’ cemetery where among the honored sleepers are war veterans, guerrillas, former presidents, and people like Haydee Yorac who distinguished themselves in service to the people of the Philippines. But basically it is a military cemetery. All soldiers who die in battle in any of our conflicts are entitled to be buried there.

Nearly 200 congressmen have signed the resolution. Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr., son of the dictator, has been pressing since February for the burial among dead soldiers of his father, who, he says, was a war hero. This was disputed during the campaign for the 1986 snap election. The dispute had to do with whether Marcos deserved all of the 27 war medals that he claimed he had earned. There were questions about the authenticity of those medals, but Marcos insisted they were authentic. The opposition couldn’t care lessâ€"the only thing that was in dispute was whether he deserved them all.

What is undisputable is that Marcos was a soldier against the Japanese, something very few Filipinos were.

To be sure, Marcos’s guerrilla unit Ang Mga Maharlika, was a product of his imagination. No war veteran remembers it, much less fighting as a member of it. But that he fought the Japanese is not disputed or has been disproved, nor that he wore the uniform of a soldier for which he was socially despised by the old rich who whispered that he was too poor to date their daughters in proper linen suits.

To be sure, too, Marcos fought for the country’s freedom from Japanese occupation, although in 1972, as president, he contrived to suppress that freedom. But again there is no question that he was able to hold together a fissile and fragile economy when the Arabs clamped a global embargo on oil exports and destroyed most of the world’s economies. Marcos’s iron grip, with which he held the opposition by the neck, also held the economy together.

Saving the economy during that difficult time, however, would not entitle Marcos to be buried among dead soldiers. What entitles him is his having been a soldier, decorated or not. He was, and so it seems he is entitled to be buried in the Libingan ng mga Bayani. Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, a former soldier, supports Escudero’s resolution for the same reason: hero or heel, Marcos was a soldier and he should be buried there. But not among ex-presidents, national artists and scientists and other notable men and women, but among the soldiers, under the same poor-quality marble cross with just a few words roughly carved on itâ€" the dates of his birth and death and a single word to describe his service: “SOLDIER.”

Marcos’s friends are behind the House resolution, supposedly inspired by a recent Social Weather Stations poll that found that 50 percent of the Filipinos favor Marcos’s burial in the Libingan ng mga Bayani. President Benigno Aquino III, whose father, Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr., was one of the victims of Marcos’s martial-law regime, has stepped aside and tossed the job of making a decision to Vice President Jejomar Binay, who, in turn, has formed a committee to study the matter.

tinuod, bnc, wa palita ug apil ang dalan sa nagdili.  pero wa man sad palita sa nagparking.  i believe that since the cleanliness of the road fronting one's house is the houseowner's responsibility, so must he have some kind of informal "authority" over its use.  badlungon god nato kun naay maglabay ug basura sa atubangan sa atong balay bisag di ato ang dalan, so why tolerate a regularly parked vehicle that belongs to someone else?

In a Disused Graveyard

The living come with grassy tread
To read the gravestones on the hill;
The graveyard draws the living still,
But never anymore the dead.
The verses in it say and say:
"The ones who living come today
To read the stones and go away
Tomorrow dead will come to stay."
So sure of death the marbles rhyme,
Yet can't help marking all the time
How no one dead will seem to come.
What is it men are shrinking from?
It would be easy to be clever
And tell the stones: Men hate to die
And have stopped dying now forever.
I think they would believe the lie.

The sensational high profile examples, such as serial killers, are but the tip of the iceberg, in many, many cases of spouse battering, child abuse, etc. pet cruelty is also a factor in the home.  It's a sad fact that all too often we read reports in the news papers of someone found guilty of cruelty to their pet which is a sick terrible thing in itself, but often that is only half the story.

In an extensive survey of abused wives who kept pets, over half revealed that their abusing partners had harmed, and in some cases killed, their pets.  The fear that the abuser would greatly harm the pet for revenge if she left, kept many of those wives from leaving.

Back in 1837 when Charles Dickens wrote Oliver Twist he created the character Bill Sykes, who was a violent bully that badly abused his dog Bullseye.  True to form, the bullying thug was also violent with people, particularly his lady friend Nancy.

Before the end of the novel Sykes attempts to take the life of the child Oliver, and succeeds in killing Nancy.  Dickens knew that those that are cruel to pets are dangerous sick people.

In a shocking amount of cases, those that commit terrible acts of violence to people, serial killers, child abusers, spouse beaters and rapists have a history of animal abuse.

As a youth Albert DeSalvo (the Boston strangler) trapped cats and dogs in crates and abused them.  Peter Kurten (the Dusseldorf vampire) started torturing dogs as a boy and carried the vile practice into adulthood.  Brenda Spencer fired rifle shots at school children, wounding nine and killing two.  Neighbors of the murderess reported that she often abused cats and dogs, sometimes by setting their tails on fire.

A study in 1997 discovered that 40% of animal abusers had committed acts of violence against people. In another study, a history of abusing animals was found in 46% of those found guilty of sexual homicide.

Why would someone be cruel to their pet?

All too frequently we read of sickening cases of cruelty to pets in local and national newspapers.  Why is it, we ask, that some 'human' creatures inflict suffering upon other creatures that are usually smaller and defenseless?  Why do they take pets into their homes only to treat them with less than respect and with a great deal of contempt?

Often the reason these animal abusers obtain a pet is the same reason that they end up treating the animal cruelly.  And that reason is control.

They may not consciously think "I need something to control so I will get myself a pet", but the fact remains that rarely do these people keep a pet just for companionship and something to love, but to have a living thing under their control.

People that deliberately hurt animals do so because it gives them a feeling of power.  Perhaps these 'people' feel undervalued within their family, or within society.  Perhaps they have an inflated sense of how much they should be valued.  Hence, these sick beings take out their frustrations on helpless pets.

Often sadistic acts of animal abuse are one step away from abusing humans.

by the way, i know of an orphanage in cebu nga usa ra ka pari ang tigbunyag sa mga bata nga abandoned.  that priest is the respected fr cris garcia, who now has founded a congregation after years of serving as a secular priest.  naturalmente, kadaghanan aning mga bataa illegitimate mao nga gi-abandon by their hapless mothers.  they have all been baptized in the catholic faith.  ang problema lang ni fr cris kay ang mga apelyido sa mga bata.  magdalidali kuno intawon siya ug pangutana kon unsa na man pod nga apelyidoha ang iyang ihatag because some have unknown parents.  naa kunoy mga bata nga nakaapelyido ug garcia ug ahat.
#40038

correct me if i'm wrong, fr chic.  the way i understand it (hazy na hinoon, and i don't know if this still holds true in the catholic faith) kana bitaw nga emergency situations nga ang bata wa pa mabunyagi, unya lisod na gyod kay mabugtoan nag ginhawa, bisan kinsa na man ang makadalidali ug bunyag so the child would die in the faith.  wa na bayay mangutana ug illegitimate ba o di ang bata.  bunyag na lang gyod dayon kutob sa mahimo.

terrible.  pre-vatican 2 nga style man ni.  the catholic church is dynamic.  it goes with the times (aggiornamento).  maybe there's something cultural at play here?

in any case, i found this explanation the simplest and the easiest to understand (from http://www.chnetwork.org/forum/the-sacraments/):

Today, legitimacy is irrelevant.  I can believe that in the past there might have been a problem with the baptism of illegitimate children but I do not know that to be a fact.  I do know that the Church no longer judges a suicide victim as unworthy of a Catholic funeral, and the two are closely related.  At one time the Church made such judgments; since Vatican II, we presume the best rather than assuming the worst.  It is, in my opinion, a significant change for the better.

I have been present at the baptism of the children of unmarried parents.  Unfortunately, it is as common today as cohabitation.  The sin of the parents is not vested on the child, so there is no reason the child should be refused the sacrament if there is at least a reasonable expectation that the child will be raised in the faith (often by a grandparent).

Yup! I do that all the time labi na kung naa ko sa Bohol. When they gave me stipends I usually donate it back to a chapel (Cabawan, San Isidro, Cogon, Ubayon (Loon), Catigbian, etc) or to a family who ask me to do a funeral, memorial mass or house blessing. In addition, mo tampo paman gani kog lain as my personal contribution (I apologize for mentioning it). Because I do believe "there is joy - real joy - in giving" and that it will come back to you a hundredfold when you're generous in giving yourself... maski pobre pa ta (no exception).  ;)

one more reason why it is difficult for me to believe hook, line, and sinker what started this thread in the first place.  there really is no protection for priests when it comes to intrigues in his own parish, especially one that is crawling with pharisees.  priests may have some character flaws, as we all have, but we must err on the side of compassion when it comes to rumors and innuendos.

I don't really know what the whole truth is but this particular incident I knew about really took place; a parent told me (istorya2x lang god namo about 3 weeks ago). They were asked by the school (Regents in Mactan) to contribute for their children's Baccalaureate Mass kay P5 thou daw bayad to get a priest to say the Mass. How true I really don't know... but that's what they were told.

this sounds like the school's decision on the amount and not the priest's.  the amount could be true, but not because the priest specified it.  it may have been presented that way to the parents to avoid protests from them.

I heard something to this effect. Sa Cebu daw it would cost P5,000 to get a priest to say Mass for a graduation or the like. Is it possible duna say set of amount nga ilang gikasabotan sa Bohol, specifically sa Diocese of Tagbilaran? Just wondering... Kay in 1985 when I was still in Cabanatuan, P1,000 was the minimum. And now, 25 years later... Again, am just wondering...

maglisod kog tuo ani, fr chic.  i believe any self-respecting catholic would be pissed off if an amount is specified for a mass for certain important occasions.  and any self-respecting priest would not dare risk losing believers because of such unusually specified amounts.  what will a priest do if, after celebrating the mass at a graduation ceremony, he ends up getting nothing because it was inadvertently forgotten? will he take back the mass?  surely, the 'compensation' (for lack of a better term) is not 'paid' up front.

naa ra bay mga pari nga di motagad sa nitty gritty sa temporal aspect of the church kay naa siyay trusted aides to do that.

i cannot help but be reminded here of how very real this is because of a personal experience of mine.  it didn't involve money but groceries.

i once brought groceries to a certain missionary priest in a far-flung area in bohol.  it was because i was to stay in his mission for a weekend training-seminar.  even if i came as a trainor, i didn't want to burden the priest with my maintenance.  thus, i brought my own provisions and then some.  the priest told me to give everything to the volunteer cook.

all throughout my stay, never were the groceries (eggs, corned beef, ham, sausages, etc.) that i brought served during meals.  all that we had were poorly cooked squid and dried fish.  even the kind of rice i brought was changed into something smelly and coarse.  i learned later that the cook brought my groceries to her family.

the priest either didn't notice or if he did, he must have deemed it unimportant.

something perhaps worth our while about church and donations:

Tithing Was An Old Testament Law

I’m a Catholic. (I love our Churchâ€"warts, sins, and blemishes. It makes me more convinced of God’s mercy.)

In all the years as a Catholic, I’ve yet to hear a clear teaching on Tithing. Here’s why: Because Catholic Theology says we’re not bound by the Old Testament Law of Tithing, but by the New Testament Law of Generosity.

I agree. But we’ve failed in generosity too!

Catholics are known as having the noisiest offerings in the world. “Klang, kleng, kling, klong, klung…” Because everyone gives coins.

One man said, “Catholics aren’t Tithers, they’re Tippers.”

Many Catholics don’t even know what Tithing is.

Thus, we’re missing out on the many blessings of Tithing.

the best recourse here is to separate first fact from fiction, foremost of which is whether it is really the priest who asks for such amounts or the church staff (or volunteer staff or whatever, with apologies for turning the spotlight on them here).

i thought of this because some years back, i learned about a retired bishop whose trusted aide undertook payment demands in the retired bishop's name.  those payments were for the retired bishop's inherited properties from his parents.  those payments never reached the retired bishop.

once these rumors are proven as truths, no one can stop any parishioner from going to the bishop of the diocese.  a letter to the bishop (Most Rev. Leonardo Y. Medroso, D.D.) may spur an investigation.  an email from you will do, sombuhan.

mere stories passed around may prove unfair to the priest and to the catholic church.  many people and institutions have suffered because of hate campaigns.  would that this isn't one of those.

this is real cruelty to the max, bai hubs.  back in the early 2000s, there was an internet campaign against this practice of making bonsais out of cats, said to have started in japan.  these were sold as tourist items and the buyers were said to be australians.

obviously, kittens who grow up as cats inside bottles turn out misshapen and their bones undeveloped.  my signature against this practice may not have meant much, but at least i added one more voice in that campaign, and a niece of mine saw to it that i added my own voice, no matter how feeble and unknown, against this form of cruelty.  kittens are not plants, kailangan pa bang i-memorize iyan?  :'(

i'm ending the wee hours of the morning after easter sunday by reading about serial killing crimes in the u.s., whew!

(strange, i slept throughout most of the afternoon to escape those easter outdoor parties by the beach.  we went to three last year, that's why, and was bored to tears.  so we decided not to repeat it this year by delivering our food contributions to the agape only and making some real excuse to call it a day, at 10 in the morning.  it turned out that our holy week felt more complete this way.)

Dangerous Man

Neighbors Vince and Steelee Faltis witnessed Charles Black of Oakland, Calif., severely beating his dog Blue (pictured) on a balcony with an axe handle on numerous occasions.  They first tried talking to Black, who has been described as a dangerous man with a criminal record, but, after hearing months of brutal beatings, decided it would be best to capture the crime on video. The neighbors videotaped two attacks and gave them to police on June 30, 2009.  The video apparently shows Black beating his two-year-old pit bull, so severely that the dog screams in pain.  According to Vince Faltis, after the beatings the dog would just shiver. Faltis was awarded $2,500 by the Humane Society for videotaping the attack, $1000 of which he donated to the Oakland animal shelter.  Black was found guilty of two felony counts of animal abuse and sentenced to four years in prison.  The dog, now named Blueberry for the blue welts he received at Black's hands, is doing well.

Pedophile and child murderer Jesse Timmendequas endured years of childhood abuse, during which family pets were tortured in front of him.  Later, his crimes against children inspired "Megan's Law," which requires that neighbors be notified of the presence of sex criminals.

Outside Atlanta in 1998, Mark Barton shot his eight-year-old daughter's kitten and then pretended to lead her on a search for  the dead pet.  A few months later, in July 1999, he went on a shooting rampage in Atlanta, killing 13 people, including himself, and wounding 13 others.

Ted Bundy, who is thought to have killed over 100 women in years of random murder sprees, enjoyed killing animals as a child.

Albert DeSalvo, better known as the Boston Strangler, first learned to enjoy killing by trapping dogs and cats in orange crates and shooting them with arrows.

Murderers… very often start out by killing and torturing animals as kids.  (Robert K. Ressler, Former FBI Serial Killer Profiler)

How Mass Murderers Start Out

As a child, Jeffrey Dahmer enjoyed torturing animals, impaling frogs and cats, and beheading a dog.  As an adult, he graduated to killing and dismembering at least 17 people, freezing their body parts and eating them.

New York City's most notorious serial killer, David Berkowitz, called Son of Sam, was known by neighbors for killing local pets.

Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski, who killed and maimed people by mailing them letter bombs, had a history of abusing cats.
