CRUELTY TO ANIMALS is Cruelty to Humans
« on: April 24, 2011, 08:42:30 PM »
He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men.  We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals.  ( Immanuel Kant, German Philosopher)

The Link Between Animal Abuse and Domestic Violence

Domestic violence as well as serial and mass criminal violence often involves animals.  For families suffering with domestic violence or abuse, the use or threat of abuse against companion animals is often used for leverage by the controlling/violent member of the family to keep others in line or silent.  The violence may be in the form of spousal abuse, child abuse (both physical and sexual), or elder abuse.  The statistics are chilling.  It is estimated that 88 percent of pets living in households with domestic abuse are either abused or killed.  Of all the women who enter shelters to escape abuse, 57 percent have had a pet killed by their abuser.

Those who commit serial or mass criminal violence often use animals as "rehearsal" tools in their adolescence to work themselves up to the eventual abuse or killing of people.  This link was first established 250 years ago, and it doesn’t seem to be changing.  That means children who torture animals should be dealt with quickly, and it should be taken seriously.  The child may be acting out because he/she is being abused or may be building up to something worse.

The more subtle problem is animal neglect.  It is important not only for the pets involved, but for the children in the home as well.  Most often if the animals are being neglected the children are too, and sometimes animal humane societies can respond sooner to reports of neglect than the overloaded child services divisions can.

Veterinarians are starting to play a larger role in the reporting of abuses of all kinds.  Veterinarians are learning to look for warning signs in pets.  For example, if there is a household where many animals live but none ever reach the age of two, then something bad is going on.  The other more obvious signs are injuries to pets that don’t match up to the story being told by the pet owner.

Because women’s shelters do not accept pets, abused members of the family often delay their exit---leaving everyone in the home facing serious physical danger.  Some experts are advocating that animal shelters and veterinary hospitals should work to provide temporary homes for pets when an abused person needs to leave a dangerous situation.

Murderers… very often start out by killing and torturing animals as kids.  (Robert K. Ressler, Former FBI Serial Killer Profiler)

How Mass Murderers Start Out

As a child, Jeffrey Dahmer enjoyed torturing animals, impaling frogs and cats, and beheading a dog.  As an adult, he graduated to killing and dismembering at least 17 people, freezing their body parts and eating them.

New York City's most notorious serial killer, David Berkowitz, called Son of Sam, was known by neighbors for killing local pets.

Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski, who killed and maimed people by mailing them letter bombs, had a history of abusing cats.

Pedophile and child murderer Jesse Timmendequas endured years of childhood abuse, during which family pets were tortured in front of him.  Later, his crimes against children inspired "Megan's Law," which requires that neighbors be notified of the presence of sex criminals.

Outside Atlanta in 1998, Mark Barton shot his eight-year-old daughter's kitten and then pretended to lead her on a search for  the dead pet.  A few months later, in July 1999, he went on a shooting rampage in Atlanta, killing 13 people, including himself, and wounding 13 others.

Dangerous Man

Neighbors Vince and Steelee Faltis witnessed Charles Black of Oakland, Calif., severely beating his dog Blue (pictured) on a balcony with an axe handle on numerous occasions.  They first tried talking to Black, who has been described as a dangerous man with a criminal record, but, after hearing months of brutal beatings, decided it would be best to capture the crime on video. The neighbors videotaped two attacks and gave them to police on June 30, 2009.  The video apparently shows Black beating his two-year-old pit bull, so severely that the dog screams in pain.  According to Vince Faltis, after the beatings the dog would just shiver. Faltis was awarded $2,500 by the Humane Society for videotaping the attack, $1000 of which he donated to the Oakland animal shelter.  Black was found guilty of two felony counts of animal abuse and sentenced to four years in prison.  The dog, now named Blueberry for the blue welts he received at Black's hands, is doing well.

dili.  ang paagi sa pag-ihaw ang cruel.  kutob sa mahimo, di unta paantuson ang hayop.  spare the animal the pain if it must serve as food to man, especially if it has served man by its labors.  mao nga sa ubang western countries, some kind of electrocution is used to stun the animal into unconsciousness.  di na mahadlok, di na mohilak.

this is real cruelty to the max, bai hubs.  back in the early 2000s, there was an internet campaign against this practice of making bonsais out of cats, said to have started in japan.  these were sold as tourist items and the buyers were said to be australians.

obviously, kittens who grow up as cats inside bottles turn out misshapen and their bones undeveloped.  my signature against this practice may not have meant much, but at least i added one more voice in that campaign, and a niece of mine saw to it that i added my own voice, no matter how feeble and unknown, against this form of cruelty.  kittens are not plants, kailangan pa bang i-memorize iyan?  :'(

I just found out recently that the composer Brahms, whom I used to know as a serial cat killer, has actually been cleared of the purported crime:

Brahms cleared of serial cat slaying

Author's research reveals calumny that for 100 years defamed German composer was the malicious gossip of 'notoriously bitchy' Wagner

by David Ward
The Guardian, Thursday 12 April 2001 18.00 BST

Johannes Brahms, bewhiskered composer of four symphonies, has been cleared of one of the most serious charges ever levelled at a musical genius - the accusation that he was a serial cat slayer.

For more than a century, cat lovers have accepted as true the allegation that Brahms slaughtered felines, transcribed the sounds of their dying moments and callously incorporated them in to his works.

But research proves that the foul calumny was almost certainly the work of Richard Wagner, a notoriously bitchy composer whose operas go on longer than one of the nine lives of an average mog.

Writing in the May issue of the BBC Music Magazine, Calum MacDonald, who is the author of a study of Brahms, dismisses the charge on empirical grounds. "In my own limited but miserable experience, dying cats don't tend to make much noise," he says.

In his review of the evidence, he notes that stories of Brahms killing cats surface mainly in books about cats rather than in books about music "which is suspicious in itself".

He finds one of the most recent accounts in Desmond Morris's Cat World, published in 1996, which claims that Brahms began cat bagging after the Czech composer Antonin Dvorak gave him a "Bohemian sparrow slaying bow".

Brahms used to take aim from his apartment window in Vienna, alleges Morris, who then quotes Wagner: "After spearing the poor brutes, he reeled them in to his room after the manner of a trout-fisher. Then he eagerly listened to the expiring groans of his victims and carefully jotted down in his notebook their ante mortem remarks."

Morris adds: "According to Wagner, who disliked Brahms, he worked these sounds into his chamber music."

MacDonald dismisses every detail of this account as suspect and reports that Morris cannot now find the source for Wagner's comments. He also explains that Wagner never visited Brahms's flat, so at best could only have been retailing gossip. Dvorak and Brahms met in 1880, only three years before Wagner died, leaving a very limited time for Brahms to become an expert with the Bohemian bow and for Wagner to get wind of the story, had it been true.

MacDonald adds: "Dvorak would presumably have to have given Brahms the bow in person but their collected correspondence contains no letter saying, 'Please, Honoured Master, accept this amusing artefact from my native land'."

He then asks: "Is there really such a thing as a 'Bohemian sparrow slaying bow'?

"Brahms's 'apartment' is presumably his flat in the Karlgasse, which was several floors up, so he'd need a long line to haul up any speared moggies. Did sparrow slaying bows have lines attached? It surely wouldn't be strong enough to haul in dying cats, especially if they were struggling."

After consulting Styra Avins, editor of Johannes Brahms: Life and Letters, MacDonald learned that in 1893 - when Brahms was still alive - a music critic for the New York Times, James Huneker, had cited the story of the composer's hatred of cats as an example of how biography could be contaminated by deliberate fiction. Huneker named Wagner as the guilty man.

"Brahms's supposed sadism is a malicious fabrication," MacDonald concludes. Which means the rest of us can listen to the clarinet quintet without fearing that some of its finest moments were inspired by a cat yowling its way to oblivion.

Catty genius

Richard Wagner (1818-1883)

The dramatic radical who took music into new realms of tonality and, with a godlike certainty of his genius, demanded universal applause. He built his own theatre in Bayreuth, Germany, in which to stage the music dramas on which his fame rests.

He proved irresistible to women, including Cosima, daughter of Franz Liszt and wife of the conductor Hans von Bulow, who apparently did not mind losing his partner to an intellectual superior.

Wagner wrote: "I am being used as the instrument for something higher than my own being warrants. I am in the hands of the immortal genius that I serve for the span of my life."

Trying to find something to say to Brahms after hearing one of his works, he commented: "The evil only starts when one attempts to compose better than one can."

Maligned maestro

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)

A romantic who idolised Beethoven and was so intimidated by his predecessor's genius that he waited until he was 43 to produce his own first symphony. He wrote three more, plus two concertos for piano, one for violin, one for violin and cello and a series of chamber works.

Robert and Clara Schumann invited him to share their home. Brahms, who never had a lasting relationship with a woman, may have been in love with Clara. He supported her when Robert tried to kill himself.

In later life, he was known for his rudeness. Once, as he left a party in Vienna, he said: "If there is someone here whom I have not insulted, I apologise."

Massacre horrifies B.C.: Man shoots 100 sled dogs ‘execution-style’ after Olympic slowdown

Editor’s Warning: Story contains graphic material that may offend some readers.

By Sam Cooper and Sean Sullivan, The Province

WHISTLER — A man who shot 100 sled dogs complained to WorkSafeBC B.C. that he suffered post traumatic stress after the slaughter and was granted compensation.

The news has horrified dog lovers and led to a joint criminal investigation by the RCMP and B.C. SPCA.

“Shocking doesn’t begin to describe what happened to these poor dogs,” said an emotional Marcie Moriarty, B.C. SPCA’s manager of animal-cruelty investigations on Monday.

“I don’t want to use the term euthanize because the man describes it as execution-style killings.”

A WorkSafe B.C. report dealing with the compensation, details the gruesome scenes on April 21 and 23, 2010, when the worker euthanized 100 dogs over two days. The size of the cull meant he had to kill the dogs in full view of the rest of the pack, leading to a bloody frenzy of wounded, frightened and angry dogs.

The dogs were buried in a mass grave.

One dog, Nora, was found crawling around in the mass grave 20 minutes after he had dumped her body into the pit. Others were chased, shot cleanly or died after their throats were slit. The employee, according to the report, was “covered in blood” when finished.

According to the report, on April 21, the man wounded one dog — Suzy, the mother of his family’s pet dog — who managed to run away despite having the left side of its cheek blown off and an eye hanging from its socket. A rifle with a scope was used to kill her from a distance; that bullet passed through her and seriously wounded Poker, a dog that wasn’t slated to be euthanized. It was later killed.

On April 23, one dog, who had part of its head blown off, attacked him after he ran out of ammunition. He killed the dog with a knife, slitting its throat while it was on top of him.

The report said the man, who had named and raised many of the dogs, has “continued to deteriorate mentally and emotionally” since the incident.

While not named in the WorkSafe B.C. documents, the man has been identified as Robert T. Fawcett, listed in corporate papers as a director of Howling Dog Tours Whistler Ltd.

In a Dec. 27, 2010, posting on a website forum for trauma sufferers, a Whistler resident named Bob Fawcett, an award-winning dogsledder, wrote: “I’ve had a pretty horrible ordeal and actually figure I may be able to be a good sounding board for others ... and it has pretty much destroyed my soul.”

Outdoor Adventures at Whistler said in a release that it has had a “financial interest” in Howling Dogs Tour Whistler Inc., which has “operational control of the dogsledding operations,” for four years.

In the statement issued Monday, Outdoor Adventures said: “OAW was aware of the relocation and euthanization of dogs at Howling Dogs in April 2010, but it was our expectation that it was done in a proper, legal and humane manner.”

Outdoor Adventures is owned by Joey Houssian, son of Intrawest founder Joe Houssian.

Records obtained by The Province indicate Houssian has been an owner of Howling Dogs Tour Whistler since Dec. 27, 2006. He is presently the sole owner of the company.

Houssian did not respond to phone calls Monday.

According to its brochures, Outdoor Adventures offers a three-hour dogsled tour in the Soo Valley for $169 per person.

Moriarty said a criminal investigation would focus on the man who killed the dogs, but the corporate management would be investigated as well.

There are provisions in the SPCA act that allow for Criminal Code charges and Moriarty says this case warrants them.

“Dogs crawling around in a mass grave; half of one’s face blown off — if those actions don’t constitute Criminal Code offences, I don’t know what does.”

Moriarty acknowledged it has historically been difficult to persuade Crown prosecutors to accept criminal charges for animal cruelty.

Moriarty said the man has claimed it was not his decision to kill the dogs, but that’s no excuse and he’s culpable.

Other dogsled tour operators in Whistler distanced themselves from the reported actions.

In the Callaghan Valley, Craig Beattie, general manager of Canadian Snowmobile & All Terrain Adventures, was asked if that operation has ever performed mass euthanizations, such as the case alleged with Outdoor Adventures.

“Absolutely not,” he said. “I’ve not heard of anything like this in my life. It’s shocking.”

Shawn Wilson, president of dogsled tour company Blackcomb Adventures, said Outdoor Adventures wanted to be “the biggest company in town.” His own company uses another dogsled contractor, one of three in the Whistler area.

“It was all business, just trying to pump out the numbers,” Wilson said. “They wanted to have 12 teams running at once.”

“When you have 300 dogs, it’s different. The owners aren’t with them every day.”

Whistler lawyer Corey Steinberg — who is representing the man who filed the WCB claim — abruptly cancelled a press conference he had scheduled Monday afternoon.

Terry Cumming of Melfort, Sask., advocates against sled-dog operators through his website, Sled Dog Watchdog. He wasn’t surprised to hear of the allegations.

“It’s pretty common for [sled-dog operators] to kill dogs and not tell anyone,” Cumming said. “If the dogs are not capable of earning their keep, they’re of no value to either the dog-tour operators or the dog mushers.”

i had come across a similar article a few months back and had refused to read through after reading the heading.  now i just had to read through with lolla's post.  this is truly sickening.  it's canada, and they could very well afford the cost of simply putting the dogs to sleep painlessly.  luckily animal rights groups are strong in that country.  i hope the company and those responsible for the slaughter will be fined stiff, the business will be forced to close due to bankruptcy.

business without compassion?  where else will it go but down?

Why would someone be cruel to their pet?

All too frequently we read of sickening cases of cruelty to pets in local and national newspapers.  Why is it, we ask, that some 'human' creatures inflict suffering upon other creatures that are usually smaller and defenseless?  Why do they take pets into their homes only to treat them with less than respect and with a great deal of contempt?

Often the reason these animal abusers obtain a pet is the same reason that they end up treating the animal cruelly.  And that reason is control.

They may not consciously think "I need something to control so I will get myself a pet", but the fact remains that rarely do these people keep a pet just for companionship and something to love, but to have a living thing under their control.

People that deliberately hurt animals do so because it gives them a feeling of power.  Perhaps these 'people' feel undervalued within their family, or within society.  Perhaps they have an inflated sense of how much they should be valued.  Hence, these sick beings take out their frustrations on helpless pets.

Often sadistic acts of animal abuse are one step away from abusing humans.

In a shocking amount of cases, those that commit terrible acts of violence to people, serial killers, child abusers, spouse beaters and rapists have a history of animal abuse.

As a youth Albert DeSalvo (the Boston strangler) trapped cats and dogs in crates and abused them.  Peter Kurten (the Dusseldorf vampire) started torturing dogs as a boy and carried the vile practice into adulthood.  Brenda Spencer fired rifle shots at school children, wounding nine and killing two.  Neighbors of the murderess reported that she often abused cats and dogs, sometimes by setting their tails on fire.

A study in 1997 discovered that 40% of animal abusers had committed acts of violence against people. In another study, a history of abusing animals was found in 46% of those found guilty of sexual homicide.

The sensational high profile examples, such as serial killers, are but the tip of the iceberg, in many, many cases of spouse battering, child abuse, etc. pet cruelty is also a factor in the home.  It's a sad fact that all too often we read reports in the news papers of someone found guilty of cruelty to their pet which is a sick terrible thing in itself, but often that is only half the story.

In an extensive survey of abused wives who kept pets, over half revealed that their abusing partners had harmed, and in some cases killed, their pets.  The fear that the abuser would greatly harm the pet for revenge if she left, kept many of those wives from leaving.

Back in 1837 when Charles Dickens wrote Oliver Twist he created the character Bill Sykes, who was a violent bully that badly abused his dog Bullseye.  True to form, the bullying thug was also violent with people, particularly his lady friend Nancy.

Before the end of the novel Sykes attempts to take the life of the child Oliver, and succeeds in killing Nancy.  Dickens knew that those that are cruel to pets are dangerous sick people.

Hindu sacrifice of 250,000 animals begins
Olivia Lang in Bariyapur

Tuesday 24 November 2009 13.11 GMT

The world's biggest animal sacrifice began in Nepal today with the killing of the first of more than 250,000 animals as part of a Hindu festival in the village of Bariyapur, near the border with India.

The event, which happens every five years, began with the decapitation of thousands of buffalo, killed in honour of Gadhimai, a Hindu goddess of power.

With up to a million worshippers on the roads near the festival grounds, this year's fair seems more popular than ever, despite vocal protests from animals rights groups who have called for it to be banned. "It is the traditional way, " explained 45-year old Manoj Shah, a Nepali driver who has been attending the event since he was six, "If we want anything, and we come here with an offering to the goddess, within five years all our dreams will be fulfilled." .

Crowds thronged the roads and camped out in the open, wrapped in blankets against the cool mist. The festivities included a ferris wheel, fortune-telling robots and stalls broadcasting music and offering tea and sugary snacks.

As dawn broke, the fair officially opened with the sacrifice of two rats, two pigeons, a pig, a lamb and a rooster in the main temple, to cheers of "Long live Gadhimai" from spectators pushing against each other for a better view.

In the main event, 250 appointed residents with traditional kukri knives began their task of decapitating more than 10,000 buffalo in a dusty enclosure guarded by high walls and armed police.

Frightened calves galloped around in vain as the men, wearing red bandanas and armbands, pursued them and chopped off their heads. Banned from entering the animal pen, hundreds of visitors scrambled up the three-metre walls to catch a glimpse of the carnage.

The dead beasts will be sold to companies who will profit from the sale of the meat, bones and hide. Organisers will funnel the proceeds into development of the area, including the temple upkeep.

On the eve of the event, protesters made a final plea to organisers by cracking open coconuts in a nearby temple as a symbolic sacrifice. "It is cruel and inhumane. We've always been a superstitious country, but I don't think sacrifice has to be part of the Hindu religion," said the protest organiser, Pramada Shah.

The campaign has the support of the French actor Brigitte Bardot, who has petitioned the Nepalese prime minister, Madhav Kumar Nepal, about the issue. But the government, which donated £36,500 to the event, has shown no sign of discontinuing the centuries-old tradition. An attempt by the previous government to cut the budget for animal sacrifice provoked street protests.

Chandan Dev Chaudhary, a Hindu priest, said he was pleased with the festival's high turnout and insisted tradition had to be kept. "The goddess needs blood," he said. "Then that person can make his wishes come true."

tradition has to be respected, but does it have to be gory?  does it need to torture animals to death?

some traditions die because as civilization develops man realizes that there are just some practices that belong to an earlier age when man was less enlightened.  an example is cannibalism.  another is the hindu practice of sati (or suttee), the widow burning of old, when the wife was "supposed to cast away any sins the husband had committed, making him able to have a happy afterlife. This was voluntary for the widow, but they were put under much pressure to do it and were looked upon as a bad person if they didn’t go through with it." (wiki)

sadly, nepal still practiced sati well into the early 20th century while india had theirs officially eliminated in the 1800s.  who knows, this gory practice of animal cruelty will die out too, sooner than later.

In theory and practice

There are many reasons why individuals abuse animals.  Animal cruelty covers a wide range of actions (or lack of action).  Learning about animal abuse has revealed patterns of behavior employed by abusers.

Animal cruelty is often broken down into two main categories: active and passive, also referred to as commission and omission, respectively.

Passive cruelty is typified by cases of neglect, in which the cruelty is a lack of action rather than the action itself.  Examples of neglect are starvation, dehydration, parasite infestations, allowing a collar to grow into an animal’s skin, inadequate shelter in extreme weather conditions, and failure to seek veterinary care when necessary.

In many cases of neglect in which an investigator believes that the cruelty occurred out of ignorance, the investigator may attempt to educate the pet owner, then revisit the situation.  In more severe cases, exigent circumstances may require that the animal be removed for veterinary care.

Active cruelty implies malicious intent, as when a person has deliberately and intentionally caused harm to an animal, and is sometimes referred to as NAI (Non-Accidental Injury).  Acts of intentional animal cruelty may be indicators of serious psychological problems.  There is an intrinsic link between battered pets and battered women and children.  The likelihood that women's shelter personnel will encounter women and children who have been threatened by batterers using animal abuse as a weapon is high.  This is because more families in America have pets than have children.  Secondly, the majority of pet owners are themselves parents with children.

Thirdly, 64.1% of households with children under age 6, and 74.8% of households with children over age 6, also have pets.

Lastly, as many as 71% of pet-owning women seeking shelter at safe houses have reported that their partner had threatened and/or actually hurt or killed one or more of their pets; 32% of these women reported that one or more of their children had also hurt or killed pets.

Battered women report that they are prevented from leaving their abusers because they fear what will happen to the animals in their absence.  Animal abuse sometimes is used as a form of intimidation in domestic disputes.

Cruelty to cat...

 :-\

maayo gani kay statue ra ni.  kun tinuod pa, daghan na untag kinamrasan ang bata.  way sala ang iring.  sala sa ginikanan nga wa matudloi ang bata...

note to parents:  tell your children not to touch much less hurt your cats when their ears are pointed backward.  it means that they are on "crazies".  this happens about three times a day, when something in cats harks back to the beginning of time, with their hunting instincts.  they're not sweet and affectionate during these times.

One of the most dangerous things that can happen to a child is to kill or torture an animal and get away with it.

Animal Abuse Potential

Is there any evidence of a connection between animal cruelty and human violence?

Absolutely.  Many studies in psychology, sociology, and criminology during the last 35+ years have demonstrated that violent offenders frequently have childhood and adolescent histories of serious and repeated animal cruelty.  The FBI has recognized the connection since the 1970s, when bureau analysis of the life histories of imprisoned serial killers suggested that most, as children, had killed or tortured animals.  Other research has shown consistent patterns of animal cruelty among perpetrators of more common forms of violence, including child abuse, spouse abuse, and elder abuse.

Is Animal Abuse Recognized as a Sign of Mental Disorder?

Yes.  In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), the American Psychiatric Association lists animal cruelty as one of the behaviors signaling conduct disorder.  Clinical evidence indicates that animal cruelty is one of the symptoms usually seen at the earliest stages of conduct disorder, often by the age of eight.  This information has only recently been included in the DSM, so some psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers are just now becoming aware of it.

Why Is It Improtant to Stop Animal Abusers When They are Young?

A 1994 report release by the National Research Council states that early intervention is more likely to reduce adult crime than criminal sanctions applied later in life.  The report further states that childhood behavior is more important than teenage behavior in predicting future violence.

Spray Painting the Pooch

On May 3, 2007, police were called to a home by a concerned pet owner whose Samoan shepherd, Wiley, had been tagged with what the owner described in the police report as "gang graffiti."  In fact, "Go Home" had been spray painted in red on the dog (pictured).  It turned out, however, that Wiley liked to roam the neighborhood unleashed and had most likely been spray painted by an irate neighbor. The deputy advised the owner to keep Wiley in her own yard and leashed when she walked him around to avoid similar acts of vandalism in the future.

Lessons in Compassion

The greatest gift you can give your child, and thus all of society, is a sense of responsibility.  In our world of materialism we have substituted giving toys for the giving of our time.  Gandhi said: "The greatness of a nation, and its moral progress, can be judged by the way that its animals are treated."  Teaching kindness is not a new concept.  In 1693, English philosopher, John Locke said: "People should be accustomed, from their cradles, to be tender to all creatures, and to spoil or waste nothing at all."

Consider the evidence concluded from the following studies:

A  1985 study found that a child who learns aggression against living creatures is more likely to  rape, abuse, and kill other humans as an adult.

In a 1983 study, 88% of families where physical abuse occurred, animals in that home were also abused.  In about two thirds of the cases, the abusive parent had killed or injured the animals to discipline a child.

A 1988 study of twenty eight rapist-murderers found that 36 percent had engaged in acts of animal cruelty in childhood, and 46 percent during adolescence.

In a study of prison inmates, 48 percent of the rapists and 30 percent of the child molesters admitted to having been cruel to animals.

Animal abuse is present in nearly 90 percent of the pet owning homes where there is physical abuse of children.  Other colleagues have found that over 70 percent of pet-owning women who seek protection in women's' shelters have had a loved pet threatened, injured or killed by their abusers.  The victimization of animals has also been associated with the abuse of the elderly and the disabled.

kasabot ko, chris.  i share your pain.  sige, pahiri na nang imong luha.  kun magasto na ang kuwarta, kalimtan na lang nato aron di na mohapdos.

my trick is to scrimp on other things.  di ko moadto ug beauty spa, pamakwi sa gasto sa akong mga gialimahan (4 ka iro, wa pay labot sa di among iro nga pakan-on ug apil; 26 nga iring, and counting).  self-help lang ko sa mga pa-beauty unya si banana republic ray moputol sa akong buhok.

morag mas importante pa man god ning pagkaon sa hayop kay sa pintal sa kuko, di ba?  in this regard, hinaot unta nga di nimo sabton nga nagpasabot ko nga di na unta ka mamintal sa imong kuko.  far from it.

regards to your labrador.  unsay iyang full name?

Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs

Michael Capretta of Snohomish, Wash., was arrested and charged with animal cruelty in 2009 after shooting his neighbor's dog Molly (pictured) and dragging it to death behind his ATV, nearly running over Molly's owner, Mary Fairhurst.  Capretta initially denied having had anything to do with the dog's death, but officers found her collar in his pocket and the ATV hidden nearby.

It seems the trouble began over a property line dispute in which Capretta had allegedly cut down a line of the Fairhursts' trees and replaced them with junked cars.  Capretta must have thought that wasn't enough and started piling cat feces on his side of the property line.  The mountain grew so large that the county ordered it buried, which required the use of an excavator to accomplish.

In 2006, when two dogs escaped the Fairhursts' property, the family claimed to have heard a gunshot, and one of the dogs was never seen again.  A couple of weeks later, Molly got out and they again heard a gunshot.  This time she returned with buckshot in her back, but survived.

After the 2009 incident, Capretta was charged with first degree animal cruelty for the death of the Fairhursts' dog.  Before the arraignment, Capretta, 56, committed suicide, after which police searched his property and found several freezers filled with dead cats.  The Fairhursts are suing Capretta's estate for emotional trauma caused by Molly's death.

Canine of the Year: Military Dog Reportedly Assisted in bin Laden Raid

By: Jenny Wilson

Two soldiers and dogs of the 26th airborne brigade of the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) rappel down from a helicopter
Getty Images / TORSTEN SILZ

Accompanying the Navy Seals who completed the bin Laden mission was a faithful four-legged fighter.  The trained military dog, either a German Shepherd or a Belgian Malinois, was attached to a human Seal and lowered from a helicopter into the compound. Wearing canine armor, he went along to sniff out hidden explosives or, if necessary, find a secret room of bin Laden's.

Canines often play a significant role in military operations as they can crawl into small spaces, find enemy soldiers and report back unnoticed with TV footage from a camera attached to their heads.  Their primary functions "are finding explosives and conducting searches and patrols," Maj. Wes Ticer, a spokesman for the United States Special Operations Command, told the New York Times, but  Ticer said that many times dogs save "the lives of the Special Operations Forces with whom they operate."

The NYT reports that according to Gen. David H. Petraus, commander of United States forces in Afghanistan, that dogs are useful because “the capability they bring to the fight cannot be replicated by man or machine.”

German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois dogs have the skills best-suited to the job (like sense of smell, courage, athleticism, endurance and intelligence) and thus are most commonly used in the military. It just goes to show a dog is a man's best friend — as long as he's on your side.

10. Magic the Miniature Mare

By Katy Steinmetz
Monday, Mar. 21, 2011

Sometimes heroism can come in the quieter, more unassuming guise of a miniature therapy horse (such as the one seen above).  Magic, a blue-eyed mare, regularly visited patients who needed comfort, whether in group homes, hospitals or hospice-care facilities, but one particular interaction gained her recognition as AARP's Most Heroic Pet in 2010.  Magic went to visit a patient who had lived in an assisted-living facility and hadn't spoken to anyone during her three years there.  But the moment she laid eyes on Magic, she said, "Isn't she beautiful?"  Those first words caused the staff to break out in tears, and she continued to communicate from that point onward.  The Florida program that brought the two together, Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses, continues to work its magic in the Sunshine State.

9. Japanese Rescue Dog

By Katy Steinmetz
Monday, Mar. 21, 2011

Amidst the chaotic, haunting images that have defined news coverage of Japan since the earthquake hit on March 11, a heartwarming scene emerged last week.  A video captured a haggard dog standing guard and protecting an injured companion in the middle of a mutilated landscape, occasionally offering a comforting stroke of the paw.  It took rescue workers an hour to convince the sentry to leave the ward.  The injured dog was then taken to a clinic, the other to a shelter.  The world was left with a heartening lesson: Sometimes a dog can be another dog's best friend, too.

In the summer of 2008, Moko the bottlenose dolphin was a constant fixture at a beach along the east coast of New Zealand's North Island, coming by every few days to play with swimmers.  But one day her visit was more business than pleasure when she showed up just in time to save two beached pygmy sperm whales.  Successfully doing what humans could not, Moko seemed to communicate with the two whales and lead them safely back into deeper water.  Had the dolphin not shown up, rescuers said, the mother whale and calf likely would have been killed as they had resisted human attempts to herd them to sea.  "I don't speak whale and I don't speak dolphin," Conservation Officer Malcolm Smith told the BBC in 2008, "but there was obviously something that went on because the two whales changed their attitude from being quite distressed to following the dolphin quite willingly and directly along the beach and straight out to sea."

7. Simon the Cat

By Josh Sanburn
Monday, Mar. 21, 2011

Aboard a British Royal Navy ship sailing down China's Yangtze River, Simon the Cat — a long-time favorite of the sailors on the H.M.S. Amethyst (seen above) — was hit by shrapnel as a result of an attack by Chinese Communist forces.  Simon was injured in the leg and back, and his whiskers were singed off.  Some of the sailors didn't think he'd make it through the night.  But eventually, Simon recuperated enough to wipe out a massive rodent infestation on board the ship, eventually taking down an enormous rat the sailors named Mao Tse Tung.  Later, his exploits became known around the world; he even managed to garner a TIME obit.  In August 1949, Simon was awarded the Dickin Medal, which honors animals in wartime.

Time’s Obituary for Simon the Cat
Foreign News: In Honored Memory
Monday, Dec. 12, 1949

The most respected cat in all Britain was a small, black, white-bibbed torn named Simon. As ship's cat on board the sloop H.M.S.  Amethyst on her heroic voyage down China's Yangtze River last spring (TIME, May 2), Simon got his white whiskers singed by a Communist shell, his face and legs scratched by shrapnel.  But throughout the Amethyst's cruise, Simon carried on in his billet, caught at least one mouse every day.

When the Amethyst got back to England, Simon was interned for the regulation six months' quarantine required of animals entering the country, but his grateful nation had not forgotten him.  Reporters from far & wide came to see and photograph the solemn hero, and he was promised the Dickin Medal* for heroic animals, to be awarded by London's Lord Mayor on his release.

Last week, on the eve of getting his medal, Simon took cold, a day later died.  In a dark wood coffin draped with the Union Jack, he was buried in a pet cemetery at Ilford, Essex.  A wooden marker at his head bore the epitaph: "In Honored Memory of Simon, D.M."

*Created in 1943 by Britain's People's Dispensary for Sick Animals, to honor animal bravery in the armed forces, and named for the dispensary's founder, Maria Elizabeth Dickin.

6. Trakr the Dog

By Frances Romero
Monday, Mar. 21, 2011

Trained as a police dog in Halifax, Nova Scotia — where he worked for six years, helping to find more than $1 million in contraband — Trakr had retired in May 2001 before he and his trainer, Canadian police officer James Symington, drove 15 hours to help recovery efforts in New York City following the Sept. 11 attacks.  Trakr was credited with locating the last survivor found beneath the rubble.  Two days after arriving and searching for survivors the entire time, Trakr collapsed from smoke inhalation, exhaustion and burns and was treated for his injuries before returning to Canada.  Later in life Trakr suffered from a degenerative neurological disorder that experts say could have been caused by his work at Ground Zero.  Before Trakr died in April 2009, his DNA was entered into a cloning contest by Symington and was later chosen for use.  In June of that year, five cloned Trakrs were born.

5. Scarlett the Cat

By Katy Steinmetz
Monday, Mar. 21, 2011

Though Cats was in the middle of its Broadway run in 1996, New York City's most famous feline that year made a more daring play out in Brooklyn. Scarlett, a homeless calico, had been staying with her 4-week-old kittens in a garage that had been damaged in several fires.  The shelter again went ablaze and one firefighter arrived on the scene to find Scarlett amidst her brood, terribly burned from having carried them out one by one.  The story quickly hit the tabloids and more than 1,000 offers to adopt the entire family rolled into the shelter where Scarlett was staying.  She eventually found a home with a local woman and then spent her days being pampered and courted by the likes of talk show host Sally Jessy Raphael until passing away in 2008.

4. Cher Ami the Pigeon

By Kayla Webley
Monday, Mar. 21, 2011

Pigeons aren't often thought of as the smartest of our feathered friends, but the incessantly cooing, bread-crumb-eating birds have their uses.  During World War I and World War II, the U.S. military enlisted more than 200,000 pigeons to conduct surveillance and relay messages.  One such pigeon, Cher Ami ("Dear Friend" in French), flew for the U.S. Army Signal Corps in France during WWI.  He flew 12 important messages before being struck by enemy fire.  Despite being shot in the breast and leg, he managed to deliver the message, which was found dangling from his shattered leg.  His brave dedication to the mission led to the rescue of 194 soldiers in Major Charles Whittlesey's "Lost Battalion."  Cher Ami, who died in 1919, likely as a result of his battle wounds, was awarded the French Croix de Guerre award for his heroic service and was inducted into the Racing Pigeon Hall of Fame.  His one-legged body is on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History's "Price of Freedom: Americans at War" exhibit in Washington, D.C.

3. Stubby the Dog

By Frances Romero Monday, Mar. 21, 2011

Stubby was just another stray dog before he found his way into an area near Yale University where the 102nd infantry, Yankee Division was training for World War I.  Private J. Robert Conroy found the puppy there in 1917 and named him Stubby on account of his short tail.  Although animals were not allowed in the regiment, Stubby was allowed to stick around because he was smart and boosted morale.  He learned the bugle calls, the drills and even a modified salute where he put his right paw on his right eyebrow.  Later he proved his usefulness at war.  Conroy smuggled the pooch aboard a ship to France, and when he was discovered by Conroy's commanding officer, Stubby won him over with an adorable salute.

He was allowed to join the soldiers on the front lines, where he was once injured during a gas strike.  Having developed a sensitivity to the smell of gas, he was able to save the soldiers as they slept through another gas attack.  He even thwarted a German soldier's attempts to map out the layout of Allied trenches by biting him on the leg and subduing him until U.S. soldiers arrived.  By the end of the war, Stubby had served in 17 battles and had developed a knack for locating his wounded comrades.  The dog became a lifetime member of the American Legion and later became Georgetown University's mascot when Conroy went to study law there.  In 1921 the pooch was awarded a gold hero dog's medal that was commissioned by the Humane Education Society.  He lived until 1926.

2. Bucephalus the Horse

By Katy Steinmetz
Monday, Mar. 21, 2011

Bucephalus was the famed steed of Alexander the Great.  As legend has it, Alexander broke the wild horse when no one else dared go near — not by force but by turning the horse's head toward the sun, understanding that Bucephalus was simply afraid of his own shadow.  No one but Alexander could mount the horse after. As one history puts it, "Long did this noble animal share the toils and dangers of his master; and this was the horse that Alexander delighted to honor."  So excellent was Buchephalus in battle that when he was once lost, Alexander is said to have threatened the destruction of an entire country unless he was returned (which he was).

1. Togo the Sled Dog

By Katy Steinmetz
Monday, Mar. 21, 2011

In 1925, a ravaging case of diphtheria broke out in the isolated Alaskan village of Nome.  No plane or ship could get the serum there, so the decision was made for multiple sled dog teams to relay the medicine across the treacherous frozen land.  The dog that often gets credit for eventually saving the town is Balto, but he just happened to run the last, 55-mile leg in the race.  The sled dog who did the lion's share of the work was Togo.  His journey, fraught with white-out storms, was the longest by 200 miles and included a traverse across perilous Norton Sound — where he saved his team and driver in a courageous swim through ice floes.  Togo, we salute you.
