Technology / Old Chain Letter Sample
May 19, 2010, 12:42:08 PM
YOU WILL EXPERIENCE GREAT SEX within four days of receiving this letter, provided you send it on. Since the copy must tour the world, you must make ten copies and send them to others. This is no joke. Send no money. Send copies to people who need to GET LAID within 96 hours.

After he passed this letter on, a Montana Spinach Control Officer got his penis stuck in a cow-milking machine and had the longest series of orgasms of his life. John Elliot tried to pick up a prostitute, but, because he broke the chain, was picked up by the police instead. When they searched his home, they found magazines of little boys which they showed to his neighbors. In a suburb of Paris, Don Loray's trousers were ripped by an unsatisfied erection, 51 days after failing to circulate the letter. However, before this happened, a condom machine gave him three condoms for the price of one. (was this the consolation prize?)

Do note the following: Hebert Pudstrom received the chain in 1953. He asked his secretary to make ten copies and send them out. A few days later he encountered her in a red-light district making more than he had every paid her at work. General George Patton, who sent the letter on, saw what he thought was a quarter in the street. When he bent down to pick it up, a beautiful woman in a miniskirt walked by, and he got a great view.

Heywood Daddit, an unemployed chicken choker, received the letter and forgot that it had to leave his hands within 96 hours. His wife then went bowling with his best friend and never returned. Later, after finding the letter again, he mailed ten copies. A few days later he got a wife and discovered that his old wife, who he thought was wonderful, had made love to him like a dead salmon for all these years! Alan Fairchild received the letter and, not believing, threw the letter away. Nine days later he spilled hot coffee in his crotch.

In 1987 the letter received by a young woman in Texas was faded and barely readable, so she did not realize that this paragraph applied to her. She promised herself she would retype the letter and send it on, but she put it aside to do later. She was plagued with problems including herpes and other venereal diseases she contracted in her futile attempts to find Mr. Right in a singles bar. The letter did not leave her hands in 96 hours. She finally typed the letter and found a man with a 10-inch penis.

Beware, however of the fate of the E-mail user at Trent University, Peterborough, ONT, that sent this letter to himself over five thousand times in one afternoon. Before leaving the computer lab a strange woman came up behind him, bit his ear and put her hand down his pants. The ensuing surprise caused him to stumble forward and cry out. As he attempted to arrest his fall by grabbing a nearby PC, a gob of spittle that had been flung from his mouth (as he cried out) landed deep into the inner recesses of the computer, all three (student, strange woman and computer) then experienced simultaneous Cyber-Orgasms of exponential intensity before exploding in a puff of smoking data.

You must distribute at least ten copies within 96 hours of receiving this letter. Those who do will find their love lives more fulfilling. Those who do not will be doomed to one-night stands with mechanical devices.

Mystery meat lunch:
Smooth, pink cubes oozing jelly.
It's gotta be SPAM.

Millions starve in Chad.
U.S. sends massive SPAM aid.
Millions starve in Chad.

"SPAM" in French is "Spamme."
Like Spamme frits and Spamme l'orange.
The French are so cool.

Pink food dye in can
With water, salt, chemicals:
It's a kosher SPAM.

SPAM is big in Greece.
With filo dough, feta, for
Spamakopita.

The tricorder hums.
Captain Kirk asks, "What is it?"
Bones says, "It's dead, Jim."

Psychologists think
Sartre wrote Nausea because
His mom fed him SPAM.

The ceiling fan turns.
The loaf sweats ominously.
Time is running out.

Is SPAM Kafkaesque
Or was Franz Kafka Spamesque?
That is the question.

SPAM--it's just the name.
It would not be an icon
If it were called "Phil."

Tubigon, Bohol / Tubigon Bohol Election Scandal
May 18, 2010, 10:49:43 PM
The camp of councilor-reelect Antonio Omus of Tubigon town wanted for the immediate release of his van being held for being suspected to have been loaded with cash for vote-buying and weapons, said his counsel Atty. Florendo Columnas.

It will be recalled that supporters of mayor-elect William Jao of Nacionalista Party of this town intercepted on election day a maroon Isuzu Crosswind with license plate number GSD-672, allegedly owned by Omus, being suspected of carrying cash for vote-buying and weapons.

There is no clear basis for holding it for long, Columnas said in an interview. Columnas said that until now or after three days since the van was held, the camp of Jao has yet to file an appropriate information against his client. Omus was with the slate of Jao's opponent incumbent Mayor Luna Piezas.

In a check with the Comelec, there still none being filed.

Jao's men, who intercepted the van, has secure last Tuesday a search warrant issued by Regional Trial Court to open the van to find out if there really was money and weapons in it.

Reports said that ready-to-distribute stapled money worth more than P40,000 was found inside the said vehicle. Police could not be contacted neither Mayor Piezas yesterday (May 14 vesper day here) for confirmation if the said report was true.

It was learned that newly-installed provincial police director Rdolfo Llorca personally served the search warrant in Tubigon a day after the holding of the van.

Meanwhile, while the Comelec described the conduct of elections as generally peaceful, a Ford Ranger wit license plate
number CGH-134, owned by incumbent Clarin town Mayor and Vice-Mayor-elect Hermogenes Diezon, was riddled with bullets from unknown armed men.

In an interview yesterday, SPO3 Jose Tajanlangit, chief investigator of this town, about seven kms north of Tubigon, said the shooting of the vehicle took place at Poblacion at around or past 3 AM on election day. No one was hurt or hit, he said.

The vehicle bore 7 bullet holes at the back and two at the front of unknown caliber. No empty shells were recovered, however. Until now the police probers are still facing a blank wall as to who are responsible for the shooting. (RVO) - Bohol Chronicle

TO ALL BOHOLANOS WHO DEARLY LOVE THEIR HOMELAND

I am calling on all of you who cherish our rich socio-cultural heritage, a God-given gift taken care of by our forebears and handed down to us, to help me in a cause to preserve them and protect them from myopic and egocentric public officials.

The case at hand is the infamous ACACIA MASSACRE in the historic town of Guindulman. These century-old trees were cut down by local officials for a ridiculous reason: to give a visual display of a new public market that supposedly is a major accomplishment for these sitting officials.

I am a native of that place, and all of my grandparents, my father and mother and all of my loved ones who have gone before me are buried in that place which I call my hometown. I will also rest my weary soul in that town and hope to the join my foregone folks among the green grass of my homeland.

What happened to the trees in Guindulman could happen anywhere in Bohol and this generation and the next will never see them again. We could not just close our eyes and fold our arms in surrender against public officials who were elected in the guise as servants of the people. It has come to fore that these officials take the public office and the public trust as something of a POWER that they can use to impose their capricious will. As a member also of the print and broadcast media, I cannot allow these. I am sure true blooded Boholanos share the same sentiment that I do.

I may cry a river in the things happening all around us today but that could not help. This wanton disregard of our historic past must be stopped.

I am to file administrative and criminal cases against these officials and authorities of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) who conspired in these unlawful acts.

Your moral support will be my strength that will lift me up to go on. Perhaps, if not now, our children and the next generation will remember us, that we made all efforts to prepare a better world for them in their time.

Hope to hear from you all. So help me God!

BBC News - Thais must step back from brink, says United Nations

Thailand must step back from the brink and begin talks to end clashes between protesters and troops, the UN says.

UN rights chief Navi Pillay said Bangkok was in danger of spiralling out of control, after five days of violence which has seen 37 people killed.

She spoke a day after protesters called for UN-backed talks to end the crisis - a move rejected by the government.

A protest leader and the government's negotiator had a five-minute phone call earlier but could not agree a truce.

Ministers say the protesters must leave their makeshift camp in the centre of Bangkok before talks can commence. -bbc

In an apparent bid to study its options amid Willie Revillame’s threat to resign from his noontime show “Wowowee,” ABS-CBN fielded in a special guest host who started on Saturday, May 15.

After all the publicity that an “Idol” was to be seen on the weekend “Wowowee,” the revelation was a no-brainer. Action star Robin Padilla made his debut as a noontime show host with much fanfare, yet with burdensome expectations that go with the job. It goes without saying that Robin may be exact opposite of the person he temporarily replaced.

Willie, the effervescent, talkative spark plug, and Robin, the cool and composed neighborhood tough guyâ€"what can’t be more contrasting? But despite this, both share the same charisma people would want to see on their TV sets while taking their lunches. However, both take a different approach: Willie exudes a lively, unadulterated, uncompromising, yet sometimes careless demeanor that keeps the audience on their feet; Robin, as what he revealed on Saturday, showing an earnest, intimate, sincere, equable, but at times a too sober attitude for a lunchtime audience.

Healhday News: Two kinds of rice -- brown and half-milled rice -- may reduce the risk of heart disease and high blood pressure by interfering with a protein linked to those conditions, research suggests.

In a new study, researchers report that the findings could indicate that brown rice is better than white rice when it comes to protecting the body from high blood pressure and artherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).

"Our research suggests that there is a potential ingredient in rice that may be a good starting point for looking into preventive medicine for cardiovascular diseases," said researcher Satoru Eguchi, an associate professor of physiology at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia.

Eguchi and colleagues said their experiments show that an ingredient in brown rice appears to combat a protein known as angiotensin II that contributes to high blood pressure and clogged arteries.

The ingredient is in a layer of rice that is stripped away when brown rice is converted to white rice. But the layer can be preserved in half-milled (Haigamai) and incompletely milled (Kinmemai) rice, which are popular in Japan.

Nearly half of all American adults have either high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes, each a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular problems, a new government survey finds.

The latest report on the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2006 shows that 45 percent of those questioned in the survey had at least one of the three risk factors: 30.5 percent with high blood pressure, 26 percent with high blood cholesterol levels and 9.9 percent with diabetes.

About one in eight adults -- 13 percent -- had two of the conditions and 3 percent had all three, the survey found. These rates were consistently higher among blacks.

The Episcopal Church in the US is set to go ahead with the controversial ordination of an openly lesbian bishop.

Saturday's ordination comes despite warnings from the Archbishop of Canterbury that it will deepen an already bitter dispute on sexuality.

Canon Mary Glasspool, 56, will become an assistant bishop in Los Angeles, the first openly gay US bishop since Gene Robinson seven years ago.

Since then the Anglican Communion has been on course for a permanent split.

Who's Who of Bohol / Fr. Marlito Gabi Ocon

Fr. Lito Ocon-Man of God
By STEVE OCON

The turning point in a man's life is when he realizes his worth and heeds to his destiny in the service of God and His church. Life would be more meaningful and worth living if he listens to the inner voice in him and accepts the challenge.

This may be said of Rev. Fr. Marlito Gabi Ocon of Cortes, Bohol, who has recently celebrated his thanksgiving mass at the Holy Name University main chapel, Tagbilaran City, place of his Alma Mater where he finished his studies as a working student. He must have prepared himself for a more manual and tougher job when he enrolled and finished high school at the former Bohol School of Arts and Trade, now Bohol Island State University (BISU). Being an engineer, we thought at the start that he would engage himself in the construction of buildings, roads, bridges, infrastructures and other man-made projects. Little did we know in our feeble minds that he was destined for more noble and higher projects in God's church.

Before ordination, this writer asked him why he wanted to become a priest. He said that being an engineer, he worked under several constructions in the Philippines and outside the country. First he worked for the Uymatiao Construction with the Bates Building Project at the second campus of Holy Name University; then at Dumaguete City; then as a ship design engineer for Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Phil. at Cebu City, and lately at Hashihama Shipbuilding in Japan.

That priestly seed of a vocation could have sprouted when he was young, grown while he was studying in college, flourished and nurtured when engaged in various works for others. He surmised that what he was doing in line with his profession was not enough.

He dreamed of doing more noble tasks ahead. He said that when he worked in Japan he was asking himself what more could he do. The idea of becoming a priest lurked in his mind. He thought of his parents and relatives at home; he tried going against the flow, but that obsession haunting his soul weighed him down. He gave up the thought of going home, and was hundred percent sure that God was calling him. This gave him joy and peace of mind. He then entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus (S.J.).

Life was then wonderful though not easy, but he found joy in the Jesuit seminary. Never has he lived a life more meaningful and more fulfilling.

His motto, "Do your best", has triggered success in his studies. He said that nothing could be more challenging than the Jesuit life, because it desires for more. Hardwork, discipline and prayer are all he needs to become more grounded. Jesuit life maximizes service of God and others - everyday they are challenged to explore boundaries, the unfamiliar ones, so that they can do and give more. The various wide range of ministries for the poor and the oppressed in the Society of Jesus have gained impetus in his life.

Fr. Lito, as he is fondly called by relatives and friends, was born forty years ago in the sleepy barangay of Malayo Sur, Cortes, Bohol, to spouses Juan Ocon and Maria Gabi. Fr. Lito and his brother Mario were born twins from the family of twins in Cortes, Bohol.

His uncles from his mother's side were twins, and followed by his cousins who were also closely born twins. He is number six in the family of eight who are mostly professionals. His older sister Veneranda finished Bachelor of Science in Agriculture: Florencio and Mario both finished Industrial Technology; Rufino, BEED graduate, a lay minister and Catholic defender, also teaches at HNU; Cirilo is an architect; Lucita and Dionisita have married earlier, having now raised their families.

As he celebrated his thanksgiving mass at the HNU main chapel, with his classmates (also ordained priests) from Ateneo de Manila University concelebrating, and with the presence of his former mentors, alumni, religious dignitaries, parents, relatives and friends, more teary eyes could be seen from among his well-wishers. They could hardly expect a different Lito from his former college years at HNU would then turn to be one of Christ's chosen ones in the ministry of His church.

And this writer who also heeded Christ's call for eight long years, but was not chosen, could only lift up his heart in thanksgiving for a life well spent in his senior years, and for having been given a "reprieve" of his life after a heart by-pass operation ten years ago. A different mission has been given him - perchance to write and tell the story of this man of God and all those who work in His ministry.

(For some reason this writer assumes a new pen name to replace the former "Dodong Ocon").

Laughing can boost the appetite in the same way that exercise does, a finding that could help people eat more when they're sick or depressed, a researcher says.

"The value of the research is that it may provide those who are health-care providers with new insights and understandings and thus further potential options for patients who cannot use physical activity to normalize or enhance their appetite," Dr. Lee S. Berk, a preventive care specialist and psycho-neuro-immunology researcher at Loma Linda University's Schools of Allied Health and Medicine in California said in a news release from the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology.

Berk and a colleague have studied laughter and contend that "Laughercise" -- their term for repetitive "mirthful laughter" -- boosts the immune system. - Health Day News

PDI: NEW YORKâ€"Charice has already won over the mom market. Now she’s trying to translate this success to her peersâ€"the teenagers.

The teen wunderkind from the Philippines had wowed audiences with her big voice and Celine Dion covers on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and other programs on TV for the past two years. This week, she appeared on Winfrey’s show for the fourth time.

But as she releases her self-titled David Foster-produced debut album this week, Charice finds herself with a serious challenge as she tries to translate her success with adult audiences to her peers. (See related story in Saturday Special on Page H1.)

Foster said it was only a matter of time before there’s an Asian superstar in the United States, and he believes Charice might be the one.

“Being a great singer is not enough, and she has the entire package,” he said.

“I’ve been singing big songs, and this is actually the first time they are going to hear me sing Justin Bieber-type of songs, Miley Cyrus-type of songs,” the 18-year-old said recently. “I’m just excited for all the teenagers to hear my album.”

Had Charice come along around the era of Dion or Whitney Houston, two of her idols, it would have been easier to make that move. Back then, big-ballad singers with towering voices dominated pop radio.

These days, it’s the grooves behind the big voice that matter.

Just several months after the newly-elected national and local leaders assume office on July 1, the entire Filipino nation will once again cast votes for barangay leaders and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials in October.

However, Commission on Elections (Comelec) Regional Director for Western Visayas Atty. Ray Rene Buac stressed that there is no law mandating that the conduct of the synchronized barangay and SK elections will also be automated similar to the recent May 10 national and local elections.

He explained that the barangay and SK elections are only being done at the barangay level and entails only a small number of voters and candidates.

The last barangay and SK elections was held in October 2007. (PNA)

A massive vote buying wave and intimidation punctuated last Monday's election in the city.

Atoy Torralba, a balikbayan-son of former Mayor Joe Torralba was shocked on how fear engulfed the city on Election Day. He reported to the city PNP the indiscriminate firing done by armed men he identified as members of the dreaded task force of Mayor Dan Lim.

Torralba identified the task force members on board a white adventure owned by the city government as Guido Lopena, Jongjong Garcia and Filbert Ingles, the drug suspect who escaped during a raid conducted by SWAT members.

"I know some of them. But, I was shocked hearing how these (task force) men of the city mayor act," Torralba told radio listeners when he went live from the city police headquarters where he personally filed his complaint.

Reacting to the incident where armed task force members were allegedly involved in the indiscriminate firing, Vice Mayor Jose Antonio Veloso expressed surprise why the PNP could not arrest the armed task force members when they were seen roaming around the city since dawn of Election Day.

"It is public knowledge that these armed task force members are out to intimidate voters," Veloso said.

"It is surprising why PNP Prov'l. Director Rodolfo Llorca could not effect the arrest under a hot pursuit principle since they were identified by witnesses of the firing incidents," Veloso questioned.

Llorca, for his part said arresting the alleged armed men needs due process since the police was not present during the firing incident. Instead, he asked radio listeners to inform his men based at Camp Dagohoy the whereabouts of the vehicle as he assured to immediately dispatch a team to arrest the armed task force members.

The newly installed PNP prov'l director warned "police characters in the city which he vowed to eradicate sooner than the public expects."

Re-elected City Mayor Dan Lim and running mate Vice Mayor Nuevas Montes were proclaimed yesterday afternoon by the Board of Canvassers as election returns from 58 clustered precincts were counted and recorded in the first automated election in the country.

Lim won the mayoralty race with 24,061 votes against his lone rival Vice Mayor Jose Antonio Veloso who got 15,726 votes. Since it was a one-on-one mayoralty race, the margin was high at 8,335 votes.

VM Montes got 23,184 votes while her opponent, Barangay Capt. Glorivic Yap de la Serna garnered 12,801.

Lim is serving his last term as city mayor while Montes is making a comeback to city hall as she once served the same position under former Mayor Joe Torralba.

In the Lim-Montes tandem, seven councilors in their slate won in the 10-man seat of the Sangguniang Panlungsod.

Philippine Provinces / New Mayor of Iloilo City

Newly proclaimed mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog of this southern city vowed to continue the programs left behind by outgoing chief executive Jerry P. Trenas.

Interviewed minutes after his proclamation by the city Board of Canvassers on Friday afternoon, Mabilog said his own development programs are patterned after those of Trenas. He said that a smooth transition is expected after the official turnover slated on June 30.

Mabilog said his priorities are on more health services for the people and other social services such as education and livelihood opportunities.

The city government is planning to establish a new city hospital and Trenas has set the pace for its construction. However, Mabilog will have to ink a memorandum of agreement for the city and the Western Visayas Medical Center (WVMC) and Department of Health.

The proposed city hospital will be a two-storey building with a capacity of 40 beds in a 3,000 square meter-lot behind the WVMC. It will be established with an initial financial assistance of P25 million from the countrywide development fund of Ilongga Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago. - PNA

Technology / Google's Mistake
May 15, 2010, 09:13:04 AM
By Maggie Shiels
Technology reporter, BBC News, Silicon Valley

Google has admitted that for the past three years it has wrongly collected information people have sent over unencrypted wi-fi networks.

The issue came to light after German authorities asked to audit the data the company's Street View cars gathered as they took photos viewed on Google maps.

Google said during a review it found it had "been mistakenly collecting samples of payload data from open networks".

The admission will increase concerns about potential privacy breaches.

These snippets could include parts of an email, text or photograph or even the website someone may be viewing.

In a blogpost Google said as soon as it became aware of the problem it grounded its Street View cars from collecting wi-fi information and segregated the data on its network.

It is now asking for a third party to review the software that caused the problem and examine precisely what data had been gathered.

Health and Food / Effects of Bad Habits
May 14, 2010, 11:38:18 PM
(AP) - Four common bad habits combined - smoking, drinking too much, inactivity and poor diet - can age you by 12 years, sobering new research suggests.

The findings are from a study that tracked nearly 5,000 British adults for 20 years, and they highlight yet another reason to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

Overall, 314 people studied had all four unhealthy behaviors. Among them, 91 died during the study, or 29 percent. Among the 387 healthiest people with none of the four habits, only 32 died, or about 8 percent.

The risky behaviors were: smoking tobacco; downing more than three alcoholic drinks per day for men and more than two daily for women; getting less than two hours of physical activity per week; and eating fruits and vegetables fewer than three times daily.

These habits combined substantially increased the risk of death and made people who engaged in them seem 12 years older than people in the healthiest group, said lead researcher Elisabeth Kvaavik of the University of Oslo.

LGU Philippines / Congresswoman Lucy Torres-Gomez

Manila Bulletin

Actor Richard Gomez has assured critics he will only support the programs of his wife, newly-elected Congresswoman Lucy Torres-Gomez, and not manage her affairs from the shadows.

“I’m just going to support her. Help her. But for most parts, it’ll all be her,” he said in an exclusive interview with Bulletin Entertainment.

Gomez’ assurance came amid concerns that he might wield a strong influence into her political decisions having been originally on the running for the post the latter is now occupying prior to a successful disqualification case filed against him.

“Of course, I couldn’t just let her handle [the responsibilities] all by herself. It’s a big jump for Lucy. It’s an abrupt change of pace for her especially as her candidacy was mainly a last-minute decision so…as her husband, I will be very supportive. I will help her push her plans, her programs,” he added.

Gomez was disqualified by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) citing his failure to establish residency in Ormoc, Leyte. According to law, individuals running for public office at the local government level must have, at the very least, established one year of residency in the city or province they choose to represent.

After much deliberation, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Office of Consular Affairs has agreed to issue dethroned Binibining-Pilipinas Universe crown holder Venus Raj a Philippine passport.

“The DFA Office of Consular Affairs will issue a Philippine passport to Ms Maria Venus B. Raj...in the next few days,” it said.

The decision was made after an ad hoc committee, formed by the department to address Raj’s case, found the latter’s claim to Filipino citizenship credible “jus sanguinis” â€" meaning, “by right of blood.”

“It is well-established that she was born to a Filipina mother, and following the jus sanguinis rule on matters of citizenship acquisition, she is a Filipino citizen who is entitled to a Philippine passport,” the DFA explained.

In an interview with Bulletin Entertainment, the 21-year old stunner expressed elation over the decision.

“I’m really, really happy. After everything I went through, this [the DFA’s decision] is most welcome news,” said she.

According to Raj she learned of the pronouncement from officials of the Binibining Pilipinas Charities Incorporated (BPCI) themselves.

“They [BPCI] called me up, asking why reporters from TV and newspapers are asking about me and that I have already been issued a passport. They asked me if it was true. Of course, at first I couldn’t answer. I couldn’t confirm it. I didn’t know that the DFA have already announced it earlier that day. I was only able to confirm it through my lawyers afterwards.”

Raj is quite grateful to those who have stuck with her through the debacle, describing how it was quite "hard" and stressful" for her.

“I’m really thankful for all the support that the people have given me as it gave me strength. If only I could go out and thank each one of them personally, I would,” said she.

Foreign drug syndicates have been recruiting Filipino drug couriers through social networking websites, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) said Friday.

PDEA Director General Dionisio Santiago said he learned this through their Filipino informant whom he identified as “Lady Gaga.”

During a press conference at the PDEA headquarters Friday morning, Lady Gaga said she was able to meet members of a drug syndicate through two social networking websites, namely, “persona.com” and “Tagged.”

Apart from these websites, Santiago said the drug syndicates also recruit couriers through introductions by other persons, where, at times, syndicate members even woo Filipinas to be their girlfriends.

Santiago said that members of foreign syndicates who have been recruiting Filipinos as drug mules were mostly black Africans.

Wearing a black mask and veil over her head, Lady Gaga was at the PDEA to receive her reward money amounting to P194,880 for helping the PDEA and other Asian foreign anti-narcotics agencies in tracking down members of an international drug syndicate.

The fear of leading vice presidential candidate and Makati Mayor Jejomar “Jojo” Binay on possible rigging of the results of the 2010 vice presidential race is impossible due to the transparency of the automated election system, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said.

“There’re no special operations because our system is very transparent,” Comelec Spokesman James Jimenez said.

“In fact, we are able to detect even the minor errors. If there are moves to subvert the system, they have to make sure that they won’t get caught. As of now, I don’t see such moves,” he added.

Jimenez said Binay can “sleep soundly” if he really believes that he is the winner of the VP race.

“The one who got the most number of votes, will win,” he said.

The Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) warned Friday 147 schools nationwide which offer nursing program but low in performance rating.

Of the total number of schools, 22 schools are located in the National Capital Region (NCR). They are Arellano University-Manila, De Los Santos-STI College, De Ocampo Memorial College, Dominican College, Dr. Carlos S. Lanting College, Emilio Aguinaldo College, J.P. Goodbye rainbow coalition of Lakas-Kampi-CMD. Hello CORE (Conscience and Reform) coalition of the Liberal Party.

Allies of Sen. Benigno Aquino III, the most likely president-elect, are gathering their forces in the House of Representatives to install Quezon City Mayor Feliciano Belmonte Jr. as Speaker in the 15th Congress.

They are belittling the chances of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, newly elected representative of Pampanga’s second district, to gather enough votes to pip the incoming president’s choice.

The 73-year-old Belmonte, the newly elected representative of Quezon City’s fourth district, served as Speaker in the 11th Congress.

Deputy Majority Leader and Mandaluyong City Rep. Neptali Gonzales II, who won a second straight term, said the CORE alliance’s base would be composed of 44 Liberal Party congressional candidates who won in the elections.

The system, called Iron Dome, has gone through testing and installation will start later this year.

According to US State Department figures, direct military aid to Israel was $2.55bn in 2009.

This is set to increase to $3.15bn in 2018. - BBC

"What has she done wrong?’’

Apparent President-elect Benigno "Noynoy’’ Aquino III posed this question to the thousands who logged on to an online petition on Facebook for his sister, television host and actress Kris Aquino, to fulfill a promise to leave the country if he won the presidency.

Aquino is currently leading by more than 5 million votes his closest rival, ousted President Joseph Estrada, in the partial tally of the Commission on Elections.

"She is a citizen of the republic, she has not committed any crime, why should she leave the country? You just can’t please every one,’’ said Aquino in a press conference here.

Kris, in the heat of an altercation with Ruffa Gutierrez and Annabelle Rama two months ago, said she would gladly consider leaving the country if she turned out to be a "cause of stress" for her elder brother if he won the presidency,

A "despedida’’ page on Facebook was launched shortly after it was clear that Aquino had run away with the presidency, and more than 7,000 have signed on, asking Kris to live up to her promise.

A team of British researchers reports that popular brain-training computer games do not improve a person's overall cognition.

In fact, the investigation, conducted by the Medical Research Council (MRC) in collaboration with the BBC television network, revealed that these brain games do little to boost the ability to reason, remember, plan or even engage in visual analysis.

The conclusions were presented by lead researcher Adrian Owen, assistant director of the MRC's cognition and brain sciences unit, in a news conference Tuesday and are published in the April 20 online issue of Nature.

"We did find that the training groups got much better on the game tests they actually practiced," MRC research staffer Jessica Grahn said during the news conference. "However, even among the people who trained the most, there was generally no translation to improvement in basic cognitive function."

MANILA, May 8 (PNA) - The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has allowed actress Lucy Torres-Gomez to run in the congressional race in Ormoc City.

Comelec Commissioner Lucenito Tagle said the commission was convinced by the petition filed by Gomez, which sought to replace her husband after he was disqualified for failure to meet the residency requirement.

“There are three basis for substitution â€" disqualification, death and permanent incapacitated. Her husband had been disqualified so she is eligible,” he said.

The decision was released before a certain Buenaventura Juntilla asked the commission to deny the substitution.

Workplace & Productivity / Jobs in America

President Barack Obama on Friday said Americans were flooding back into the job market as the economy slowly improved after a barn-busting report showed 290,000 jobs were created in April.

Obama hailed the Labor Department figures as a "very encouraging" sign that the US economy is emerging from the doldrums of a recession that destroyed more than eight million jobs.

Even though the new jobs figures beat all estimates, the number of Americans returning to the labor market pushed the unemployment rate up to 9.9 percent, from 9.7 percent in March.

At least 805,000 Americans entered the market in April. Employers -- still shell-shocked from the worst recession in a generation -- could not create enough jobs to keep pace. - Agence France Presse

Agence France Presse: Two bankers and a hotel developer were charged Friday with fraud and insider trading, in a case pursued by President Barack Obama's Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force, the Department of Justice said.

The suspects, from 2004 to 2007, arranged loans under false pretenses for a total of 80 million dollars, one fourth of which was pocketed by the developer who lived in luxury and even bought himself an island in the Bahamas, the DoJ said in a statement.

The bankers, meanwhile, sold all of their shares of the Atlanta, Georgia-based Integrity Bank they worked for, which was getting into deep financial trouble because of the loans to the hotel developer.

"The indictment charges that in essence they allegedly took advantage of secret inside information to sell stock that they knew to be overvalued, to others who did not share the same information," the DoJ said.

The number of people using mobile broadband to access the Internet is expected to soar from around 400 million today to some 3.5 billion by 2015, Swedish telecommunications equipment giant Ericsson said on Wednesday.

Global mobile broadband use in the next five years would leap to the same level as the use of second-generation mobile phone services (voice and text messaging) today.

About 3.5 billion people worldwide use such services today, while only about 400 million have access to third generation (3G) mobile broadband services through their phones
or laptops, Ericsson told AFP.

Agence France Presse: More than a dozen privacy and consumer protection groups have banded together to protest what they see as duplicity by Facebook when it comes to safeguarding people's information.

The Electronic Privacy Information Center said Thursday it had joined 14 other organizations in filing a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission charging the social networking website with "unfair and deceptive" practices.

The cadre of Facebook critics also fired off a letter to the US Congress urging legislators to closely monitor how the commission looks into Facebook privacy concerns.

"Facebook continues to manipulate the privacy settings of users and its own privacy policy so that it can take personal information provided by users for a limited purpose and make it widely available for commercial purposes," the letter stated.

The Commission on Elections has been asked to prohibit actress Lucy Torres-Gomez to be a substitute candidate for her husband, actor Richard Gomez, who has been disqualified in the congressional race.

In a petition filed Thursday, Buenaventura Juntilla asked the Comelec, through Commissioner Rene Sarmiento, to deny Torres’ bid as a substitute candidate for the fourth district of Leyte, saying that since Gomez has been declared a non-candidate, he could not be “validly substituted as there is no candidacy to speak of, much less, a candidate to be substituted.”

In the 9-page petition dated Thursday but made public on Friday, Juntilla cited the Supreme Court ruling in Fermin vs. Comelec, G.R. nos. 179695 and 182369, Dec. 18, 2009, stating that, “While a person who is disqualified under Section 68 is merely prohibited to continue as a candidate, the person whose certificate is cancelled or denied due course under Section 78 is not treated as a candidate at all, as if he or she never filed a CoC [certificate of candidacy].”

During the May 4 episode of “Wowowee,” Revillame announced that he would quit hosting the program if ABS-CBN management did not fire Jobert Sucaldito, an entertainment columnist, radio show biz commentator, and segment host of the TV gossip program “The Buzz.”

The network has yet to directly address Revillame’s threat. On the phone yesterday with the Inquirer, corporate communications head Bong Osorio said he and other network executives were “discussing” the issue.

THE QUEZON CITY PROSECUTOR’S OFFICE has recommended that actor John Lloyd Cruz be haled to court for failing to comply with a Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) order requiring him to show his book of accounts.

Citing an April 15 resolution approved by the prosecutor’s office, the BIR said in a statement that Cruz was found to have violated the tax code.

In June 2007, the BIR issued a subpoena ordering Cruz “to appear and produce his books of accounts and other accounting records before the bureau’s chief of the legal division … on July 10, 2007.”

“Despite receipt of the said subpoena, the respondent failed to appear on the date/time indicated and submit the desired documents,” said the resolution penned by Assistant Prosecutor Rogelio Velasco.

“All told, there exists sufficient grounds to bind over the respondent for trial” for failing to pay the correct amount of taxes to the BIR, the resolution added.

The BIR has placed some show biz and entertainment personalities on a list of priority sectors in which the agency wants to improve collections to ensure that its targets are met.

ACTOR ROBIN PADILLA, THE “Bad Boy of Philippine Movies” is being sued for actively endorsing condoms which a political party claimed is an affront to public sensibilities.

Ang Kapatiran Party (AKP) senatorial candidate and lawyer Jo Aurea Imbong Friday asked the Quezon City Regional Trial Court to stop a firm promoting the use of condoms, and its most prominent endorser, from advertising the contraceptive in ads, saying that such materials are against public decency and morality.

Named as defendants in the complaint were actor Robin Padilla and DKT Phils Inc.

The actor is the endorser for Trust Condoms, a brand under the Trust Family Planning line of contraceptive products.

Imbong went to court accompanied by AKP standard bearer JC de los Reyes, who has taken a stand against the proposed reproductive health bill.

“It is respectfully prayed that a writ of preliminary injunction be issued ordering defendant Padilla to cease and desist from publicly espousing and promoting condoms and condom use,” the complaint read.

I have just obtained an info from the DENR. The truth is that what the mayor had told the DENR that they would prone the trees. Later the DENR was surprised upon inspection that the mayor had cut all the trees, young and old, for no reason at all. Later we know the mayor just wanted her new public market be seen by all. One acacia tree was spared from the heartless massacre because the mayor could no longer find a brave soul that she could hire to cut the trees. The one who cut the giant tree mysteriously died the day after he cut that century-old tree.

If you go to Guindulman, you'd find that no soul was happy with the heartless decision of the mayor.

Malacañang laughed off what it calls "creative speculation" to elevate fears of an the president clinging on to power after May 10.

According to Deputy presidential spokesman Gary Olivar in radio reports, "Oplan Rafael," or the acronym for "Retain Arroyo through Failure of Elections," as claimed by a militant party list, is a concoction by creative cause oriented groups who could not present evidence.

Olivar maintained the speculation is baseless in as much as Mrs. Arroyo is already running for a congressional seat in Pampanga.

Few days ago, militant group Bayan Muna claimed the malfunctioning of precinct count optical scan (PCOS) machines for the May 10 polls are part of "Oplan Rafael."

The Commission on Elections, however, insisted the May 10 polls will push through as scheduled, after tracing the problem to improperly programmed memory cards.

Bayan Muna Rep. Satur Ocampo cited supposedly ominous signs like Defense chief Norberto Gonzales Jr.'s reported warning about a failure of elections and "unresolved" automation problems.

But Olivar pointed out Mrs. Arroyo is already campaigning for a congressional seat in her home province of Pampanga. - PIA

Survey firms owned by Aquino relatives, allies

A case of Kamag-anak Incorporated is now tagged behind the positive surveys showing Presidential candidate Sen. Benigno Noynoy Aquino leading the race.

Kamag-anak incorporated was a taunt referring to former president Corazon Aquino’s advisers and relatives occupying key government positions.

According to Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP) senatorial candidate Francisco Kit Tatad in reports, relatives and close associates of Liberal Party (LP) presidential candidate “Noynoy” Aquino are directing behind the scenes the surveys being conducted by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) and Pulse Asia.

Philippine Star bared that Tatad cited research paper and documents from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), showing members of the Aquino clan and former associates of the late President Corazon Aquino as directors and stockholders of SWS and Pulse Asia.

Among those named in the SEC documents and research papers were Rafael Cojuangco Lopa and Antonio “Tonyboy” Cojuangco.

Lopa was director and president of Pulse Asia until last year when he resigned to camouflage the firm’s support for Aquino’s bid for the presidency. Cojuangco on the other hand bankrolled the setting up of Pulse Asia in 1990.

Tatad also said it is unusual that former Public Works secretary Jose de Jesus (under the Aquino administration) is an incorporator and director in both Pulse Asia and the SWS.

“This suggests that there was a plan from the beginning by the Aquinos to control public opinion polling in the country,” Tatad said. - PIA
