Course Description: Thermal Energy Subject

Course Description

This course is taught in four main parts. The first is a review of fundamental thermodynamic concepts (e.g. energy exchange in propulsion and power processes), and is followed by the second law (e.g. reversibility and irreversibility, lost work). Next are applications of thermodynamics to engineering systems (e.g. propulsion and power cycles, thermo chemistry), and the course concludes with fundamentals of heat transfer (e.g. heat exchange in aerospace devices).

Course Description of Unified Engineering

The basic objective of Unified Engineering is to give a solid understanding of the fundamental disciplines of aerospace engineering, as well as their interrelationships and applications. These disciplines are Materials and Structures (M); Computers and Programming (C); Fluid Mechanics (F); Thermodynamics (T); Propulsion (P); and Signals and Systems (S). In choosing to teach these subjects in a unified manner, the instructors seek to explain the common intellectual threads in these disciplines, as well as their combined application to solve engineering Systems Problems (SP). Throughout the year, the instructors emphasize the connections among the disciplines.

Course Description: Fundamentals of Engineering Design

Student teams formulate and complete space/earth/ocean exploration-based design projects with weekly milestones. This course introduces core engineering themes, principles, and modes of thinking, and includes exercises in written and oral communication and team building. Specialized learning modules enable teams to focus on the knowledge required to complete their projects, such as machine elements, electronics, design process, visualization and communication. Examples of projects include surveying a lake for millfoil from a remote controlled aircraft, then sending out robotic harvesters to clear the invasive growth; and exploration to search for the evidence of life on a moon of Jupiter, with scientists participating through teleoperation and supervisory control of robots.

Aerospace Engineering and Design

The fundamental concepts, and approaches of aerospace engineering, are highlighted through lectures on aeronautics, astronautics, and design. Active learning aerospace modules make use of information technology. Student teams are immersed in a hands-on, lighter-than-air (LTA) vehicle design project, where they design, build, and fly radio-controlled LTA vehicles. The connections between theory and practice are realized in the design exercises. Required design reviews precede the LTA race competition. The performance, weight, and principal characteristics of the LTA vehicles are estimated and illustrated using physics, mathematics, and chemistry known to freshmen, the emphasis being on the application of this knowledge to aerospace engineering and design rather than on exposure to new science and mathematics.

Secrets of Having Flat Stomach

1. Up your fiber intake
A recent Danish study found that women who ate more fiber gained less weight with age, particularly around their middle, than women on low-fiber diets. So how much fiber should you aim to take? 25 to 30 grams a day, recommend experts. Good sources include fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains.

2. Eat frequently
Stress causes weight gain because when you're often anxious or feeling overwhelmed, your body produces stress hormones like cortisol, which encourages the storage of fat in the abdomen. Studies have shown that hunger can trigger the same effect and send cortisol in overdrive, leading to an expanding waistline. To keep your hunger under control, eat five or six smaller meals instead of three main meals.

3. Cut back on salt
Sodium causes your body to retain fluids. That's why a diet high in sodium can result in a bloated stomach as well as raise your blood pressure. Stay away from high-sodium culprits such as processed and canned foods, and whenever possible add flavor to your foods with herbs and spices instead of salt.

In 2007 Serena Kozakura, 38, was convicted of property destruction after she allegedly kicked in the wooden doors to an unnamed man’s apartment and trashed it to hell. However, during a reenactment of the crime, Kozakura proved that the hole someone made in the door was way too small for her and her impressive 44-inch chest to crawl through.

Based on just that, the woman was acquitted. It’s probably safe to say she will never curse her massive knockers ever again after it turned out they are her own personal pair of top notch defense lawyers. Oh breasts, is there anything you cannot do? - source: weirdworm.com

Philippine Provinces / Illegal Structures in Iloilo
August 11, 2010, 09:36:01 AM
PNA - Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog has given the go signal for Task Force Asis to start the demolition soon of hundreds of illegal structures along public places and sidewalks.

Mabilog said there was no more legal impediment in the demolition of illegal structures since a letter from Secretary Jesse Robredo of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) reinforced the city’s initiatives against illegal structures that impede the smooth traffic flow and passage of pedestrians.

Task Force Asis executive director Robert Dumanil said that Executive Order 004 Series of 2010 was issued by the city mayor last July 16 calling for restructuring and strengthening the anti-squatting and illegal structures task force.

The order will be implemented immediately at the area of the central business districts and eventually in other areas in the city in consonance with provisions of Republic Act 7279, which empowers local government units to adopt measures to curtail the nefarious and illegal activities of professional and squatting syndicates.

The executive order also appoints Dumanil anew as Task Force executive director out to implement the law and remove illegal structures and squatters declared as nuisance on city public places and properties.

The new executive order is a restructured version of Executive Order No. 14 issued in 1990 that prohibits the use of sidewalks, public places and plazas for the construction of stalls, kiosks for commercial purposes and other constructions declared as nuisance per se and shall be summarily removed or demolished.

City police chief Supt. Leopoldo Cabanag said he believes that there are two different groups responsible for the burglary incidents at the Agencia Belen pawnshop and the Belciña Jewelry Store in Dumaguete.

According to Cabanag, the leader of the group that robbed the Agencia Belen over the weekend and carted close to half a million pesos worth of jewelry, was a former member of the notorious robbery/hold-up Kuratong Baleleng gang that targets pawnshops, banks and similar business establishments.

Two of the suspects were presented to the city mayor on Monday following their arrest.

In the case of the Belciña Jewelry Store, Cabanag said they are still digging deeper into the robbery incident as the owners are allegedly not very cooperative with the police.

He believes, though, that a different group, perhaps members of the Acetylene Gang, was behind the break-in that led to the loss of millions of pesos in jewelry and cash during the height of the Holy Week observance this year. (PNA)

Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala vowed to maintain transparency in the agency to avoid the prevalence of anomalous transactions.

Speaking at a press conference Monday in Davao City, Alcala singled out transparency in the conduct of biddings.

Alcala visited the city on Monday to grace the Kaniyogan Festival.

He cited his recent directive to stop the bidding of an equipment that will be use to detect toxic substances in food.

Opting not to name names, Alcala said he ordered the stoppage of the bidding after he learned that the bidding was subservient to a certain company.

With the stoppage, the department has saved some P30 million to P35 million with that project alone, Alcala said.

Under the Arroyo administration, the agriculture department surfaced into over P58 billion fertilizer fund scam.

Alcala said by strictly observing transparency under his leadership at the department, a repeat of such huge scam would be avoided.

The reported rice cartel is also among the issues being addressed by the department under Alcala’s leadership.

He said inventories in National Food Authority (NFA) warehouses were also being conducted.

This after President Benigno Aquino, III in his State of the Nation Address stated that rice stocks were rotting in government warehouses due to over importation.

Alcala said some warehouses in Metro Manila were indeed found full of rotten rice stocks.

Alcala said the rotten rice stocks due can still be distributed or sold as feeds. The difference however will be paid by the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), he said.

The department will implement measures and programs that would lead the country to rice sufficiency by 2013. (PNA) RMA/Judy G. Quiros/lvp

(PNA) â€" The Police Regional Office 6 (PRO 6) is banking on the support of the city government here to sustain the mobility of its patrol cars.

PRO 6 director, Chief Supt. Samuel Pagdilao Jr. admitted that the gasoline allowance that is given to local police stations by the Philippine National Police (PNP) is not enough to sustain their daily consumption.

The ICPO for the month of July was allotted 2, 227. 36 liters of gasoline and 163. 37 liters of diesel. The allocation was divided into various sectors to include the ICPO headquarters, six police stations, Public Safety and Management Office and the Traffic Management.

Pagdilao said that the creation of a centralized patrol unit that provides immediate police assistance and the continuous patrolling covering as many areas and streets as possible more frequently have been limited by the lack of fuel resources.

“I’m sure that the city government is also helping that’s why we are very appreciative of the city government support for the city police,” he said.

Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog confirmed that the city has been providing the ICPO gasoline allowance although it is unlikely that it will be increased next year because there has been no increase yet on the cost of fuel.

City executive assistant Jess Sio said that the city government allotted almost P80, 000 per year for the gasoline consumption of the ICPO.

Philippine Provinces / Drug Cases in Iloilo
August 11, 2010, 09:26:24 AM
(PNA) â€" A total of 29 cases are now pending in various courts here as a result of the intensified campaign against illegal drugs jointly conducted by the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO 6) through its Regional Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operations Group (RAIDSOG), and the Philippine Drugs Enforcement Agency (PDEA).

The cases filed stemmed from various operations for the period July 26 when PRO 6 director Chief Supt. Samuel Pagdilao Jr. declared an all out campaign against violators of the anti-illegal drugs law.

The series of operations netted 33 persons and seized some P213, 000 worth of marijuana and shabu .

Meantime, Pagdilao commended the RAIDSOG and the PDEA for another successful operation that resulted to the arrest of Rene Tumangan and recovery of three big plants of marijuana and several seedlings at Brgy. East Valencia, Buenavista, Guimaras about 5 p.m. Tuesday.

“This one is a small step but I’m sure there is a big implication in terms of what it was able to stop. So we are nipping the rose in the bud. This will serve as a deterrent to those who are thinking that this place might be an area where they can grow marijuana,” he said.

A 34-year old mother from the hinterlands of Sta. Catalina in south Negros Oriental on Tuesday filed a complaint at the town police station against five suspected members of the militant human rights group, Karapatan, for allegedly taking her son with them without the parents’ permission.

The group, two of whom were identified as a certain John Alforque and another only by the name of Maben, and three “John Does”, allegedly took her 13-year old son with them Monday afternoon as a guide to the house of a certain Erning Bendanillo.

Rochelle Langcoyan Coconon, of Sitio Subo in Barangay Nagbinlod, Sta. Catalina, said she was attending a dialogue between government troops of the 79th Infantry Battalion and residents of the said sub-village when the incident happened.

According to Coconon, while the meeting was underway about an hour later, at least five young men, believed to be members of the Karapatan arrived at the gathering and were hanging around just listening to the meeting, but nobody paid attention to them.

The group left shortly before the meeting ended around 4 p.m., said Coconon.

Coconon said that when she reached their house shortly thereafter, she found out from her other son that the younger brother was allegedly forced to guide the same group that was spotted earlier at the meeting. - PNA

The city council of Dumaguete has denied Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria’s letter request for an appropriation of P7,450,000.00 for the purchase of various heavy equipment, until such time that all the questions are cleared before a committee meeting.

Council members say there’s a need to scrutinize the funding appropriation in suggesting that requests of such kind be endorsed to the city council one week before the cut off day, to give ample time for committee hearings.

The presiding officer Vice Mayor Alan Gel S Cordova said that it is not a mandate of the legislative body to delay requests for funding, but their mandate is to protect the city coffers.

In an interview, Sagarbarria explained the P7.45 million appropriation will be used to purchase one big bulldozer, one big backhoe to be used in rechannelling Banica river, and other projects of the city and a small back hoe specifically to dislodge the canals of Dumaguete.

The mayor said time is of the essence to prevent an recurrence of the February 7 floodings, citing the need to clear Banica river of all obstructions.

In like manner, the mayor’s request to buy two mini dumptrucks for collection of dislodged materials from the city’s canals was also junked by the city council. - PNA

The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) has announced that it has no other option but to operationalize the new passenger terminal building (PTB) at the Dumaguete port which was completed months back on orders of the port district in Cebu .

PPA port manager Renato Tolinero received orders Tuesday to operationalize the PTB effective Thursday, August 12 to cater to the needs of the riding public in Dumaguete and Negros Oriental.

Tolinero said he has no choice but to handle the operation, using the existing manpower as there is no authority yet to hire additional personnel to handle the operations, such as security guards, maintenance, among others.

He has suggested to privatize the operation of the PTB because it entails additional funding requirement for its operation.

However, unconfirmed reports say an arrastre and cargo handling company has withdrawn its intention of operating the facility, one of the reasons provided is also about the cost of operation.

The PTB costs more than P51 million and can accommodate 1,300 to 1,500 passengers at a given time.

A simple ribbon cutting ceremony will highlight the start of the operation on Thursday, Tolinero said. (PNA)

Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria has confirmed that a replica of the famous Cathedral Bell Tower that stood for several years at the Rizal Boulevard in Dumaguete had recently become a haven for illicit activities such as the illegal drugs trade and “prostitution”.

The mayor had ordered to demolish the structure about two weeks ago, explaining that it had become more of a liability now to the city as it no longer served its original purpose as a tourism one-stop shop and display room.

It is useless having the replica Bell Tower there when the real, centuries-old tourist draw can be viewed a few blocks away at its location near the St. Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral, he said.

It was also a waste of government money to maintain the same structure that was no longer being utilized after the city tourism office moved to a new building at the Quezon Park.

Sagarbarria said plans are afoot in making the boulevard appealing to tourists and locals alike. (PNA)

The brain appears to be a vastly interconnected network much like the Internet, according to new research.

That runs counter to the 19th-Century "top-down" view of brain structure.

A novel technique to track signals across tiny brain regions has revealed connections between regions associated with stress, depression and appetite.

The research, which has been published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal, may lead to a full map of the nervous system.

Larry Swanson and Richard Thompson from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, US, isolated a small section of a rat's brain in the nucleus accumbens - a brain region long associated with pleasure and reward.

Their technique hinges on the injection of "tracers" at precise points in the brain tissue. These are molecules that do not interfere with the movement of signals across the tissue, but can be illuminated and identified using a microscope.

Loops not lines

What is new is that the researchers injected two tracers at the same point at the same time: one that showed where signals were going, and one that showed where they were coming from. The approach can show up to four levels of connection.

If the brain has a hierarchichal structure like a large company, as neurology has long held, the "to" and "from" diagram would show straight lines from independent regions up towards a central processing unit: the company's boss.

But instead, the researchers saw loops between differing regions, feeding back to and directly linking regions that were not known to communicate with one another. This is a better fit with the model of vast networks such as the internet.

The region of the brain studied by the researchers displays a network connecting regions associated with stress, appetite and depression.

Artist's conception of signal in a network One model of the mind describes its powers as arising from a vastly interconnected network

Such a highly interconnected structure has been hypothesised for some time, and could prove to be a powerful tool in analysing how the brain processes information. But it had not, until now, been demonstrated experimentally.

"You would be amazed at how much of the current experimental neuroscience literature is dominated by 'top down-bottom up thinking', which goes back to the 19th Century, especially in neurology," Professor Swanson told BBC News.

"The bottom line is that no matter what you might think, the circuitry we've shown - that specific set of structural connections - has not been demonstrated before."

The work illuminates just one tiny corner of the vast number of connections present even in a small mammal's brain. But by slightly overlapping one mapped region with another, and mapping that, a far greater picture could emerge.

"This method is repeatable in a sensible way so that neural networks can be followed as far as they go - ultimately to the whole wiring diagram of the brain," Professor Swanson said.

Such a diagram would be boundlessly complex, and the degree to which it could shed light on the more slippery questions of consciousness and cognition is still up for debate.

Honda Motor Co. is recalling the popular Accord and Civic passenger cars to address problems with an ignition switch that could allow the key to be removed without the transmission being shifted into park, its third recall over the problem since 2003.

Honda said the most recent recall involved 384,220 vehicles and includes 2003 model year Accord and Civics and 2003-2004 versions of the Honda Element. Honda told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the defect with the automatic transmissions could lead to a vehicle rolling away and increase the risk of a crash.

The Japanese automaker said in a statement the recall would involve about 197,000 Accords, 117,000 Civics and 69,000 Elements. The company said it has received several complaints about the ignition interlock and "is aware of a small number of related incidents, including one that resulted in a minor injury."

Honda said the ignition interlock mechanism could be damaged or worn during use and "it may become possible to remove the ignition key when the shift lever is not in park." Unless the parking brake is set, the vehicle could roll away under those circumstances and lead to a crash.

The three related recalls have involved about 1.4 million vehicles since 2003. Honda recalled more than 560,000 minivans and sedans, including the 1998-99 Accord, to correct the ignition park-shift interlock defect in October 2003. In January 2005, Honda recalled nearly 490,000 passenger cars, including certain 1999-2002 Accords, because of the ignition switch problem.

Inspiration & Hope / A Prayer for Grocery
August 10, 2010, 03:31:47 PM
forwarded email

Louise Redden, a poorly dressed lady with a look of defeat on her face, walked into a grocery store..

She approached the owner of the store in a most humble manner and asked if he would let her charge a few groceries.

She softly explained that her husband was very ill and unable to work, they had seven children and they needed food.

John Longhouse, the grocer, scoffed at her and requested that she leave his store at once.

Visualizing the family needs, she said: 'Please, sir! I will bring you the money just as soon as I can.'

John told her he could not give her credit, since she did not have a charge account at his store.

Standing beside the counter was a customer who overheard the conversation between the two. The customer walked forward and told the grocer that he would stand good for whatever she needed for her family.  The grocer said in a very reluctant voice, 'Do you have a grocery list?'

Louise replied, 'Yes sir.' 'O.K' he said, 'put your grocer y list on the scales and whatever your grocery list weighs, I will give you that amount in groceries..'

Louise hesitated a moment with a bowed head, then she reached into her purse and took out a piece of paper and scribbled something on it. She then laid the piece of paper on the scale carefully with her head still bowed.

The eyes of the grocer and the customer showed amazement when the scales went down and stayed down.

The grocer, staring at the scales, turned slowly to the customer and said begrudgingly, 'I can't believe it.'

The customer smiled and the grocer started putting the groceries on the other side of the scales. The scale did not balance so he continued to put more and more groceries on them until the scales would hold no more.

The grocer stood there in utter disgust. Finally, he grabbed the piece of paper from the scales and looked at it with greater amazement.

It was not a grocery list, it was a prayer, which said:

'Dear Lord, you know my needs and I am leaving this in your hands.'

The grocer gave her the groceries that he had gathered and stood in stunned silence.

Louise thanked him and left the store....  The other customer handed a fifty-dollar bill to the grocer and said; 'It was worth every penny of it. Only God Knows how much a prayer weighs..'

THE POWER: When you receive this, say a prayer. That's all you have to do.

Just stop right now, and say a prayer of thanks for your own good fortune.  Then please send this to all your friends and relatives.

I believe if you will send this testimony out with prayer in faith, you will receive what you need God to do in your and your families' life .

So dear heart, trust God to heal the sick, provide food for the hungry, clothes and shelter for those that don't have as we do. Amen & Amen

As mobile phones get more sophisticated, hi-tech criminals are dusting off some old tricks.

Security companies have noticed a rise in trojans known as diallers that used to be popular during the days of dial-up net access.

On a smartphone the diallers are being used to call premium rate lines leaving victims with a big bill.

Experts say the diallers are proving popular as a quick way for criminals to cash in.

A 23-year-old Canadian woman shaved her head and eyebrows, claimed to have terminal cancer, and swindled thousands of dollars from well-meaning donors before being jailed on fraud charges.

The tale of Ashley Kirilow was splashed across the Canadian media on Monday, with newspapers and TV news widely showing a picture of the woman smiling with a white scarf over her bald head.

Kirilow on Friday turned herself in to police in Ontario province, who had been investigating her case, and was jailed for swindling some 5,000 Canadian dollars (4,850 US dollars).

The bigger a person's waistline, the more likely they are to die of any cause, regardless of whether they are overweight or not, a study published Monday says.

Researchers at the American Cancer Society in Atlanta looked at the association between the waistlines of 48,500 men and 56,343 women aged 50 years and older, and death from any illness.

After adjusting for body mass index and other risk factors, the researchers found that men and women with very large waists â€" 120 centimeters (47 inches) or greater in men, and 110 centimeters (42 inches) or more in women â€" were around twice as likely to die of any cause as people with smaller waists.

The risk of dying was greater regardless of whether a man or woman was normal weight, overweight or obese, found the study published in the American Medical Association's Archives of Internal Medicine.

The study also found that men and women with very large waists were "more likely than those with smaller waists to be less educated, to have a high BMI (body mass index), to be physically inactive, to be former smokers, and to have a history of cardiovascular disease, cancer or respiratory disease."

BBC News has shown how straightforward it is to create a malicious application for a smartphone.

Over a few weeks, the BBC put together a crude game for a smartphone that also spied on the owner of the handset.

The application was built using standard parts from the software toolkits that developers use to create programs for handsets.

This makes malicious applications hard to spot, say experts, because useful programs will use the same functions.

While the vast majority of malicious programs are designed to attack Windows PCs, there is evidence that some hi-tech criminals are starting to turn their attention to smartphones.

Flight attendants of Philippine Airlines (PAL) moved a step closer to holding a strike after they and the flag carrier failed to reach an agreement at the Department of Labor and Employment Monday.

Andy Ortega, vice president of the Flight Attendants and Stewards Association of the Philippines (FASAP), said a strike became more likely after PAL management insisted that the attendants’ main complaint about retirement age should be discussed only in the next collective bargaining agreement (CBA) negotiations.

“The strike option is always there and is, in fact, strengthened after [Monday’s] meeting where nothing happened,” Ortega said after the negotiations at the National Conciliation and Mediation Board.

P80-M offer

At the meeting, PAL offered an P80-million package to the flight attendants and stewards to settle their CBA for 2005-2010 but refused to talk about their mandatory retirement age.

FASAP has opposed PAL’s implementation of a mandatory retirement age of 40 for both male and female flight attendants, claiming it’s “discriminatory.”

FASAP president Roberto Anduiza said last month that his group was considering going on strike because the CBA negotiations had dragged since the last CBA expired in 2007.

“They said they want to talk about the retirement age in the next CBA, which, for us, is simply unacceptable. It should be settled in this CBA negotiation,” Ortega said.

No-motherhood policy

FASAP is also contesting the “no-motherhood policy” of PAL, which bars a pregnant flight attendant from receiving any salary or allowance and travel benefits while she is on leave.

However, PAL president Jaime Bautista said he was hopeful that FASAP would still accept the P80-million package the management offered at the conciliation meeting.

Despite government intervention and management assurance of job security, many more Philippine Airlines (PAL) pilots are preparing to resign in the coming weeks, threatening to once again cripple the flag carrier’s operations.

A senior member of the airline’s Airbus A320 division, who asked not to be named since he still works for the company, said PAL pilots had lost faith in PAL management.

“Last week, [PAL president Jaime] Bautista met with all of us and he promised that none of us would be moved to Air Philippines anymore,” the pilot said.

“We don’t believe them anymore. That’s what they told us a month ago before transferring our colleagues to Air Philippines,” he said.

August 10, 2010, 11:03:14 AM
House prices are starting to fall, the latest survey by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) has said.

It is the first time since July last year that its monthly survey has detected a downturn in prices.

Rics said this was because more homes were being put up for sale, while enquiries from potential new buyers had fallen for the second month in a row.

Buyers are still finding it hard to get a mortgage, while fear of unemployment is putting off others, Rics added.

"The fall in the Rics house price measure is broadly consistent with most other recent data that has been released," said Rics spokesman Ian Perry. - BBC UK

palmbeachpost.com - Nelder Lester can't get it out of her head. The image of her 2-year-old daughter's last minutes, struggling to breathe in a baking van in the driveway of a Delray Beach day care center.

Authorities can't tell Lester how long Haile Brockington sat strapped in her seat, unable to move, on Thursday before she lost consciousness and died.

"I don't want to keep thinking she was in the seat belt trying to catch her breath," Lester said, stopping to gasp for breath herself.

"I don't know if she tried to get out. She might have been trying to bang on the door," she said, sobbing on Saturday as she made arrangements for Friday's funeral. "The windows (of the van) are tinted. If they weren't tinted, somebody would have saw her."

source: http://ordinaryevil.wordpress.com/2010/08/08/father-murders-son-execution-style-after-the-teen-admits-to-raping-little-sister/

Last November, the three year-old daughter of Karonne Ivey continued to say that her  “tootie” hurt and conveyed that something sexual had been happening to her. She then made the allegation that her perpetrator was her fifteen year-old half brother.

Karonne Ivey was “shocked” at her daughter’s claim but she believed the child and took her to an emergency room for an exam. Even though the examination did not show any evidence of sexual assault (not uncommon, even when a child has been raped), and although fifteen year-old Jamar Jr. denied that he ever touched his sister sexually, Karonne Ivey felt that her little girl could not have come up with such an accusation on her own and that something must have happened to her.

Prosecutors allege that Jamar Jr. then made a 1:30 a.m confession in a phone call to his father, saying, he “did it” but Jamar Sr. was allegedly too angry to discuss it that night and said he would go see his son the next day to talk about it.

Prosecutors claim that Jamar’s father arrived at his son’s home the next day with the intention of murdering him. They say that when Jamar jr. admitted to having raped his little sister, Jamar sr. decided to execute his son for his alleged crime. Prosecutors say that Jamar Pinkney Jr. was beaten with a pistol and made to strip naked at gunpoint by his father. They say that Jamar was then forced to go outside his home, and as his mother and grandmother watched, Jamar’s father made his son kneel in front of him. In the next moment of this horrific scene, Jamar’s father shot Jamar jr., execution-style, in the boy’s face. Jamar’s mother, Monique Cherry, testified that her son begged for mercy from his father, screaming, “no daddy no, I’m sorry,” but her son received no leniency, just a bullet to his head.

Africa / Free Diamonds
August 09, 2010, 10:58:32 PM
Ex-Liberian President Charles Taylor gave Naomi Campbell diamonds after a 1997 dinner in South Africa, the supermodel's former agent Carole White has told Mr Taylor's war-crimes trial.

She said Mr Taylor and Ms Campbell had been "mildly flirting" during the meal.

In her testimony, Ms Campbell said she had received some "dirty stones", but she did not know who had sent them.

Prosecutors say Mr Taylor armed rebels fighting a decade-long civil war in Sierra Leone, in return for diamonds.

Mr Taylor denies 11 charges at the Special Court for Sierra Leone, sitting in The Hague, and he has denied having anything to do with the trade in so-called blood diamonds.

Ms White said Mr Taylor had told the supermodel during the dinner that he would send some men to give her diamonds.

"We were sitting around this lounge area at about 10 o'clock at night and we were waiting for these men to arrive," she said.

Police arrested a call center agent who, posing as a talent handler of the television network GMA 7 and several fashion magazines, allegedly duped a student of the University of Santo Tomas into giving up her money and her modesty in exchange for a modeling career.

The victim was reportedly the second student of the university and resident of Marikina City to be preyed on by the alleged swindler.

Operatives of the Manila Police District General Assignment Section (MPD-GAS) arrested Paul Anthony Maskarino, 22, a call center agent of Telus Philippines, of Barangay Laging Handa, Quezon City, on the complaint of the 18-year-old student, who got wind of the scam after the suspect allegedly threatened to upload a webcam video of her naked if she refused to give him P5,000 in cash for a modeling contract.

Police Officer 3 Donald Panaligan, case investigator, said that Maskarino was arrested on Friday evening in an entrapment operation at an eatery in front of UST in Sampaloc, where the suspect had asked to meet the student for the transaction.

Panaligan pointed out that based on the victim’s complaint, when Maskarino called her to schedule the meeting, the suspect told her in Filipino, “The contract is with me so you should go with what we agreed upon. If you do not honor the agreement, I will upload your pictures and webcam video on the Internet.”

The case investigator told the Inquirer, “When she signed the contract and gave him the cash, the suspect even told her that they should go to a motel so she could truly become a model. It was then that she gave the signal for our policemen to arrest him.”

Based on the complaint, the teenager first met Maskarino at UST on April 18. He introduced himself as a talent handler of GMA 7 and an agent for several fashion magazines looking for models.

After obtaining her trust by introducing himself as a UST alumnus, he likewise promised her a modeling contract for which she had to pay P5,000 and that he needed pictures of her clad only in underwear as required by a certain Malou Canazares, supposedly a talent acquisition representative of MEG Philippines.

Maskarino and the student became friends and Internet chat mates after the student gave him the pictures. It was during one of their chat sessions that Maskarino convinced the student to undress in front of the webcam, purportedly for him to see that she could really be a model.

On August 5, Maskarino allegedly threatened the student into preparing the P5,000 cash for the contract, which had been four months overdue. His manner made the victim suspicious and prompted her to seek police assistance.

Panaligan said that Maskarino was the object of a complaint for estafa and acts of lasciviousness by another UST student.

On Novemver 4, 2009, Maskarino allegedly got P12,500 from the female teenager and a movie date purportedly as payment for his intervention to avert a failing grade in a college subject.

Inside the movie theater, the suspect allegedly molested the student, kissing her and touching her private parts against her will. Maskarino allegedly threatened to withdraw his help in getting her a passing grade should she refuse.

Maskarino, who is detained at the MPD-GAS holding cell, denied the allegations. He said he met the students on the social networking site Facebook but had not demanded nor received any sum from them. .

He claimed that the student he offered a modeling career to was a favor to a friend who is a freelance photographer. However he could not give out a name.

THERE were 1,827 commercial sex workers recorded in Cebu City from January to July this year, city health authorities said.

Of that number, 186 are male sex workers.

Dr. Ilya Tac-an, Cebu City Health Department (CCHD) chief of surveillance, said the figure represents a fast increase from the 2,360 recorded last year.

Tac-an said there are still 1,000 sex workers that were not registered for sanitary cards in their office.

Dr. Josef Bullecer, former chairman of the Cebu City Anti Indecency-Board (CAIB) said the numbers show a decline in morals in the city.

He blamed this on the prevalence of “extra services” in spas and massage parlors.

Bullecer said prostitution will be reduced if tougher laws against it are enforced by the police. - cebu daily news

LUCENA CITYâ€"City health officials here have expressed alarm over the rising cases of sexually transmitted disease (STD) among local youngsters.

“As of July we had 31 cases, mostly walk-in patients as young as 12 and 13 years old,” Dr. Vincent Martinez, assistant city health officer, said in an interview aired Friday over radio dwCT-FM in Tayabas City.

He said the number of STD cases for the current year had surpassed the average number of victims for the past five years.

Martinez said what also alarmed local health officials was the indifference of the victims.

“When we asked the victims who their sex partners were, they just said they didn’t know. The gang did it for fun. The gang had sex with a common partner. And for the victims, STD is not a matter of serious concern,” he said.

He revealed that the city have records of cases of human immuno-deficiency virus (HIV), which causes the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).

“These known HIV cases in the city are not sex workers but ordinary people. We could not provide the exact figures because we believe that there are more unreported cases,” Martinez admitted.
