The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) has announced that it has no other option but to operationalize the new passenger terminal building (PTB) at the Dumaguete port which was completed months back on orders of the port district in Cebu .
PPA port manager Renato Tolinero received orders Tuesday to operationalize the PTB effective Thursday, August 12 to cater to the needs of the riding public in Dumaguete and Negros Oriental.
Tolinero said he has no choice but to handle the operation, using the existing manpower as there is no authority yet to hire additional personnel to handle the operations, such as security guards, maintenance, among others.
He has suggested to privatize the operation of the PTB because it entails additional funding requirement for its operation.
However, unconfirmed reports say an arrastre and cargo handling company has withdrawn its intention of operating the facility, one of the reasons provided is also about the cost of operation.
The PTB costs more than P51 million and can accommodate 1,300 to 1,500 passengers at a given time.
A simple ribbon cutting ceremony will highlight the start of the operation on Thursday, Tolinero said. (PNA)
