The canoe paper "is very exciting," says Andrew Lorrey, a paleoclimate specialist at New Zealand's National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research in Auckland. The study enriches the "prewritten history of [New Zealand] and Pacific archaeology in general," he adds. And the paper on wind patterns presents "a very important result and has implications not only for when settlement might have occurred, but also for return voyaging [of explorers] to tropical Polynesia," says Bruce McFadgen, an archaeologist at Victoria University of Wellington.

They both caution that questions remain. For one thing, the wind patterns paper claims the climate window for sea voyaging to and from New Zealand closed well before 1300, though the canoe is dated to 1400. "There is a timing discrepancy," says Dilys Johns, an archaeologist at the University of Auckland, who is first author on the canoe paper. She says there is a possibility that the New Zealand canoe builders used traditional techniques passed down through generations long after they lost contact with Polynesia. Lorrey also notes that there could be uncertainties in the radiocarbon dating.

Still, the papers don't settle the question of whether the Polynesians of that age could sail into the wind. Answering that question, McFadgen says, "will test the ingenuity of future archaeological research.”
#3305
The second paper addresses a debate over whether Polynesian craft could have fought the winds to travel east. Now, winds in the tropical and subtropical Pacific are easterliesâ€"that is, blowing from east to west; further south, westerlies prevail. Some scholars have taken these wind patterns to mean that Polynesians must have been capable of sailing into the wind to have traveled east from Samoa and the Central Pacific islands southwest to New Zealand. But canoes with that capability apparently only appeared centuries after the Polynesian colonization of those islands. So how did the first explorers get there? In the new study, a group led by Ian Goodwin, a climatologist at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, has concluded that Polynesian sailors might not have had to deal with the challenge of easterlies after all. Because of shifting climate conditions, there were several decades-long windows of opportunity in which Polynesian seafarers could have sailed with the wind at their backs to travel east and other times when winds favored travel between the Central Pacific islands and New Zealand. "Our reconstructed sailing conditions during the period of East Polynesian colonization would have enabled all of the known colonizing routes, and others,” to have been successfully navigated by canoes that couldn’t sail into the wind, the authors report online today, also in PNAS. And those favorable winds prevailed during precisely the periods when archaeological evidence indicates Polynesian colonization occurred. The wind reconstructions, based on new data about past climate, also suggest that Polynesian long-distance voyaging declined after 1300 because the winds shifted to their current patterns.

Polynesian seafarers colonized Pacific islands stretching from Samoa and New Zealand to Easter Island and Hawaii centuries before Europeans discovered that ocean. But the details of when and how the Polynesians managed to traverse such vast stretches of open water are little understood. Now, a new archaeological find illuminates the construction of Polynesian canoes, while a study of ancient climate patterns bears on a long-standing debate about when Polynesians acquired the capability to sail into the wind.

The first piece of the puzzle is a fragment of a wooden canoe found in 2012 near the Anaweka River on the northwest coast of New Zealand's South Island. The 6-meter-long plank is likely part of a hull of a canoe that was originally up to 20 meters long and either had two hulls connected by and supporting a deck or had an outriggerâ€"a sort of minihull connected to the canoe by armsâ€"that provided stability. Radiocarbon dating indicates the canoe made its last voyage around 1400, and researchers believe it was built in New Zealand because it was constructed with wood from trees native to the islands. But two features suggest a strong tie to Polynesia. The plank has ribs carved into the inside face that suggest the craft's structure resembled a similar-aged canoe from the Society Islands, more than 4000 kilometers to the northeast, the authors report in a paper published online today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). The plank also has a relief carving of a sea turtle that would have been toward the rear of the craft just above the water line. Such turtles are common artistic motifs among the Polynesians but rarely appear in art native to New Zealand.

Liberal Party candidate Camarines Sur Rep. Ma. Leonor “Leni” Robredo is the country’s vice president.

Robredo on Friday trumped her closest rival, Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., the son and namesake of the late dictator.

According to the official count of Congress sitting as the National Board of Canvassers, Robredo led the race with 14,418,817 votes, or just 263,473 ahead of Marcos who got 14,155,344.

She was declared winner after the closing of the canvassing of 166 certificates of canvass (COCs) at past 7 p.m. on Friday, which incidentally was also the 58th birthday of her late husband, interior secretary and former Naga City Mayor Jesse Robredo.

Once upon a timeâ€"a couple of election cycles ago and before he kept changing the system to ensure he stayed in powerâ€"I used to defend Erdogan. I drew hope from the way he wrestled the Turkish economy from ruin to an expansion of 68 percent. That’s an average annual growth rate of 4.5 percent, second only to China. I was impressed by the way in which he pushed the perpetually interfering, habitually undemocratic Turkish military back into base camp. I was optimistic about his post-Islamist direction of travel towards religiously inspired secular democracy.

No longer. I was wrong, and I wholeheartedly apologize to liberal Turks everywhere.

To say that Erdogan has become drunk on power would be an understatement. The man is more like a crack addict. The sooner he is retired, the better. Indeed, the whole “Turkish Model” is dead, overdosed on Erdogan.
#3316
One suspects that this prize entry was noted less for its lyric virtues, and more for its author. Deliciously, it was uttered ad-lib by London’s former mayor Boris Johnson, of part-Turkish ancestry himself. One would be forgiven for tweeting the insulting lines under hashtag #OffendErdogan.

Mockery aside, there is a very serious and very dark element to Erdogan’s megalomania. Article 299 of the Turkish penal codeâ€"barely used in the pastâ€"states that anybody insulting the head of state can be jailed for up to four years.

Under Erdogan, between August 2014 and March 2015 alone, 236 people were investigated for "insulting the head of state.” From 2003 to 2014, 63 journalists were sentenced to a total of 32 years in prison. A 16-year-old boy was indicted earlier this year for calling the president a thief during a demonstration. If convicted, he faces a four year sentence. Even a former Miss Turkey has been charged for posting a poem on her Instagram account that the “Sultan” found offensive.

This is how the great Turkish Republic, long a bastion of pluralist secular Islam, is slowly being reduced to the midlife crisis of one man hunting down comedians in foreign countries.
#3317
But he won. Due to Germany’s archaic laws against offending organs of “foreign states,” one of Germany’s most intelligent satirists has been ordered by a Hamburg court to censor his song about Erdogan’s brutal assault on Turkey’s press.

Boehmermann responded on Twitter  by linking to the iconic Beastie Boys song, “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!).”

From there, it was the reaction of the traditionally irreverent British liberal press that stole the show. The Spectator’s Douglas Murray responded to Erdogan’s cry-bully tactics by introducing an “insult  Erdogan” poetry competition. That magazine even offered a £1000  ($1,448) prize for the most insulting limerick. The more offensive the better, they said, and the winning entry is worth repeating here:

There was a young fellow from Ankara
Who was a terrific wankerer
‘Till he sowed his wild oats
With the help of a goat
But he didn’t even stop to thankera.
#3318
But this is all run-of-the-mill for tinpot strongmen, who so often mistake their ability to retain office as a demonstration of popularity and power. The truth is, it's also a weakness. Power is a weapon. And like a domestic firearm, it is a weapon that is likely at least as dangerous to you as to others.

Nothing highlights this weakness, this manic insecurity, and this puerile obsession with control in a more darkly comical way than the stunt Erdogan just pulled in Germany.

The president of Turkey, this once great leader of that proud and historic nation, filed a criminal complaint against Jan Boehmermann, a German satirist for… writing this poem https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kF_4BTbyQls about him.

The origins of the truly serious offence that was taken are found in the peculiar incident of Germany’s ambassador to Turkey, Martin Erdmann, being summoned to the Turkish Foreign Ministry over an ‘Extra 3’ satirical video about Erdogan. There, Erdmann was asked to explainâ€"yes, explainâ€" the video, and to ensure that it was taken off air. It was this incident that inspired Boehmermann’s poem.

You see, the Great Leader was butt-hurt.

After this month no one was left in any doubt as to Erdogan’s neo-Ottoman delusions of grandeur, as he pushed out Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu while maneuvering to replace him with a long-time crony.  At one point his own son in law seemed a likely appointee.

To use the cliché “palace coup” would not even be metaphoric on my part. Perched atop a hill on the outskirts of Ankara sits Erdogan’s specially commissioned 1,000-room White Palace, or AK Saray. Bigger than the White House and the Kremlin, this Sultan-like extravagance cost even more than the budgeted $615m. And as Erdogan’s sultanate grows, so too does Erdogan’s sultan-like caprice.

Freedom House reports that Erdogan has been eroding freedom of the press in Turkey at an alarming rate over recent years. This unhinged crackdown on journalists culminated last month in the seizure and state takeover of opposition newspaper Zaman, which is now embarrassingly owned and operated by the Turkish state. Such has been Erdogan’s assault on journalists that even President Barack Obama felt the need to warn the authoritarian Erdogan to back off.

The Turkish president’s addiction to power is a disease his country can no longer afford.

LONDONâ€"Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan came to power in 2002, a year after the formation of his AK party. But spending 11 years as prime minister wasn’t enough. In 2011, Erdogan changed the system, clearing the way for him to become  the country’s first directly elected president in 2013.

True to all incremental power grabs, he initially sold this move to Turks as merely “ceremonial.”

That facade has now ended.

Austria’s political future is on a knife-edge, with the candidate bidding to be the European Union’s first far-right president holding a wafer-thin lead over his rival.

According to the public broadcaster ORF, Norbert Hofer of the rightwing populist Freedom party (FPÖ) was neck and neck on 50% with his rival Alexander Van der Bellen, a former Green party leader who is running as an independent.

Postal ballots, accounting for 14% of eligible voters and expected to favour the left-leaning candidate, are being tallied on Monday, and a full result is not expected until Monday afternoon. Fifty per cent and one vote would suffice to hand the presidency to one of the two candidates. Data from Austria’s interior ministry, which does not take into account the projected postal vote, put Hofer on 51.9% and Van der Bellen on 48.1%.

Even though the Austrian presidency is mainly a ceremonial role, a vote of around 50% for the far-right politician Hofer already represents a political earthquake in a country in which two centrist parties have dominated the landscape since 1945, and will be celebrated as a triumph by xenophobic parties across the continent. -- http://www.theguardian.com/

Barangay tanod nanigbas napriso

(BANAT NEWS)

CANNES, France â€" Filipino actress Jaclyn Jose won best actress at the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday, May 22, for her mesmerizing performance as a mother forced to sell drugs to survive before falling prey to corrupt police. (READ: Director Brillante Mendoza urges Duterte to 'change' Philippines)

A tearful Jose said she was "so surprised" as she took to the stage to accept the award for her role in Ma' Rosa by acclaimed director Brillante Mendoza.

She said she had to forget everything she learned in her 30 years in the business for the role as a sweetshop owner and small-time drug dealer in Ma' Rosa.

"The biggest challenge for me was not to act. Especially since I am coming from television shows where I play loud and campy characters," she told reporters.

The 52-year-old said she had to "tone everything down to zero" â€" even performing without makeup on for the stark, realistic presentation of the Philippine slums favored by Mendoza.

It is a dramatic change from her regular job, playing a spoiled, rich woman in the popular Filipino TV soap opera, The Millionaire's Wife.

Variety magazine praised Jose for the "naturalistic grace" of her film performance, playing the matriarch of a family struggling to survive amid squalor.

The daughter of a Filipina mother and a largely absent American serviceman father, Jose first became famous in Philippine showbiz circles for her ethereal beauty.

But she has proven to be a versatile and hard-working actress, starring in dramas, comedies, horror stories, romances, and television soap operas.

She has won numerous acting awards in her native country and acted for some of its most prestigious filmmakers.

She appeared in Mendoza's first movie The Masseur 11 years ago and also his drama Serbis, which competed in Cannes in 2008.

In a quick interview aired on TV Festival de Cannes, Jaclyn spoke about her victory and how much this moment meant to her.

“I am so thankful to Brillante Mendoza,” the veteran actress said. “I did not [expect]. I just want to come here and be with my daughter and walk the red carpet.

“I was just sitting there watching the stage how nice it... is and how come in the Philippines we can’t make this, just these simple things and then they call my name. So I got surprised. I’m so happy really, really,” Jaclyn added. “ But of course I’m proud, so proud of our film. We just don’t know how the people would react or will like our film but us, we know that we did our best and we know that we have a good film." â€" Rappler.com

Last month, after Duterte joked about wanting to be the first in line to rape an Australian missionary who was gang raped and killed by inmates in a 1989 Davao jail riot, Villegas shared a link of Duterte’s videotaped remarks on his Twitter account. He wrote, “Judge for yourself if this is the right choice. … This video can help.”

Duterte has also openly called for the use of contraceptives, which the Catholic church staunchly opposes, offering cash to Davao city residents who agree to undergo ligation and vasectomy.

#3338
Until a day before his inauguration as president on June 30, Duterte said he would continue to publicly disclose “the sins of the Catholic church and whether or not you are still relevant,” promising to be more circumspect after his proclamation. Duterte says he believes in God but doesn’t believe in religion.

Church officials were not immediately available for comment.

They have, however, criticized Duterte for cursing the pope, his public vows to kill criminals, his publicly acknowledged adultery and vulgarity.

Archbishop Socrates Villegas, who heads the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, said killing people, adultery and vulgarity were all forms of corruption and asked if Duterte deserved the term “honorable” after he cursed the pope, which sparked laughter among the mayor’s followers.

“When a revered and loved and admired man like Pope Francis is cursed by a political candidate and the audience laughs, I can only bow my head and grieve in great shame,” Villegas said last year. “My countrymen have gone to the dregs.”
#3339
During the campaign, Duterte said he warned Catholics they may go to hell if they voted for him because bishops have criticized him as immoral partly for advocating the killing of criminals. Millions of Filipinos, however, still voted for him in the election, which he said served like a referendum.

“Look, were you able to stop me?” Duterte asked, citing his lead of more than 6 million votes over his closest rival.

The foul-mouthed mayor then turned to the bishops, accusing some of them of violating their vow of celibacy by getting married or keeping women and seeking favors like cars from politicians. Once, he said without elaborating, church officials whom he did not identify forced him to take steps as a mayor so they could obtain a real estate property in a residential enclave.

Those acts amounted to corruption and violated the Philippine constitutional edict of separation of church and state, according to the brash Duterte, who is known for his vulgarity, sex jokes and devil-may-care irreverence.

“Some people here in the Philippines can’t even afford to have food to eat or get medicine while you’re enjoying the money of the goddamn people,” Duterte said. “Aren’t you ashamed of yourselves, you sons of bitches?”

“You know,” Duterte said, “the most hypocritical institution is the Catholic church.”

Philippine president-elect blasts Catholic church, bishops

The Associated Press

MANILA, Philippines (AP) â€" The presumptive Philippine president-elect has blasted the country’s dominant Roman Catholic church as “the most hypocritical institution” and accused some of its bishops of corruption for allegedly asking favors from politicians, including him.

In a late-night news conference that dragged on to the early hours of Sunday in southern Davao city, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte questioned the relevance of Catholic bishops, citing his overwhelming victory in the May 9 presidential election based on an unofficial count despite efforts by them to persuade Filipinos not to vote for him.

Such harsh public condemnation of the influential church and its bishops by a top politician is rare in the Philippines, Asia’s bastion of Catholicism. It presages a potentially thorny relationship between the Catholic church and the incoming president, who shocked bishops in November when he cursed Pope Francis for sparking a huge traffic jam that trapped him for hours during a visit to Manila.

Duterte apologized after bishops denounced his action.

The five dogs now safe in New Hampshire are settling into their new surroundings well, according to the SPCA. Workers are allowing them to acclimate to the shelter, and will begin socializing them before making them available for adoption.

“The New Hampshire SPCA is a proud Emergency Placement Partner shelter for the Humane Society of the United States,” Lisa Dennison, executive director of the New Hampshire SPCA, said in the release. “When HSI contacted us, we could not turn our backs on these animals. They are dogs in need and we wanted to be here to help them find the life as a beloved companion just as we would for any dog in need.”

But changes in attitude have affected South Korea’s culinary traditions, according to the Times. As the nation has gained wealth, more people have taken in pets, and a younger generation is beginning to see the act of eating dog meat as an appalling instance of animal cruelty.

The dogs are just a few of the 260 freed from a farm where they spent their lives in cages, according to a New York Times report. The farm’s owner released them after partnering with HSI, an animal rights group that has offered incentives to South Korea farmers, encouraging them to give their animals up for adoption in the U.S. and instead explore other livelihoods, like farming produce.

Since arriving in New Hampshire last week, the dogs have received medical and behavioral evaluations, the release said. Many of them had only weeks left to live before they became part of the global dog-meat trade, an industry that kills some 30 million dogs each year, the Times reported.

IT WASN’T the kind of homecoming this “balikbayan” had in mind when he returned to the country after eluding local authorities for more than 30 years.

Rommel Ventura Lachica, who was convicted in 1979, was rearrested in Cainta, Rizal province, on Wednesday and brought back to the national penitentiary, not only to serve the rest of his sentence but also face new charges stemming from his escape in 1986, the Philippine National Police said.

In a report released on Friday, the PNP’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) said Lachica was tracked down at St. Francis Subdivision in Cainta, shortly after he flew back to the country from the United States to visit family members.

Lachica was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Pasig Regional Trial Court for robbery with homicide in 1979 and escaped from New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City on March 18, 1986, according to Senior Supt. Joel Pernito, regional chief of CIDG-Calabarzon.

Authorities later learned that Lachica had turned up in Los Angeles, California, and managed to acquire American citizenship in 1990 under the name Rommel Reyes Agoncillo, Pernito said.

Lachica was brought back to Bilibid and would face charges for illegal use of an alias and falsification of public documents.

No cordon sanitaire

In Davao City, Laviña denied there was a cordon sanitaire around Duterte. He said suggestions for positions from as many people as possible were welcome.

According to Laviña, Duterte’s camps heard about the criticisms against the appointments on Quiboloy’s radio station, but learned that Quiboloy had not been consulted on the matter.

He said that those handling Duterte’s visitors were indeed people from the city mayor’s office.

“The reception of the guests, well-wishers is handled by the city mayor’s office. That’s why Bong Go as chief of staff, staff from the city information office and tourism office and a few other officials are the ones handling it,” he said.

“We are involved in the facilitation, but as to the actual reception, we don’t have any participation,” Laviña said.

He said Duterte’s camp would apologize to Quiboloy.

“Hopefully we can extend our apology to Pastor Apollo Quiboloy, the same apology we extended to (Moro National Liberation Front spokesperson Rev. Absalom) Cerveza, these are not intentional, we wanted to accommodate everyone,” he said.

Cerveza reportedly lined up on Monday to congratulate Duterte, but was turned down by the mayor’s staff.

“Things happen,” Laviña said.

“We are not trained to do it perfectly. If there are a few who were not entertained, we extend our apologies and adjust accordingly,” he said.

Laviña said he was sure Duterte and Quiboloy would meet soon and the next Philippine leader may consult Quiboloy on some of the nominees. With reports from Nestor Corrales, Inquirer.net; and Allan Nawal and Germelina Lacorte, Inquirer Mindanao/TVJ

Villar, son of former Sen. Manuel Villar and incumbent Sen. Cynthia Villar, met with Duterte in Davao on Monday night and the presumptive President-elect offered the post to him. His parents were also there.

Abe said Quiboloy gave his unequivocal support to Duterte during the campaign, having his private jet and helicopter at the then-candidate’s disposal anytime.

“Pastor Quiboloy helped Mayor Duterte a lot during the campaign,” Abe said.

He said groups supportive of Quiboloy committed votes for Duterte, not to mention the 6.5 million followers of the sect throughout the world.

Quiboloy and Duterte “were more than brothers,” Abe said.

“Their friendship spans 30 years and not a day passes that they do not talk to each other. They would call each other up even if Pastor Quiboloy is in the US. They play golf and go motorbike riding together. They have their bonding moments. It’s a solid friendship,” Abe said.

Abe said Quiboloy wanted to help Duterte in advancing his campaign promise of change.

“People should feel that change… Positions cannot be arbitrarily given and take us all by surprise,” Abe said, adding that Quiboloy believed the appointments should not be done hastily.

According to Abe, the appointments can be announced in the second or third week of June, after a thorough review of the nominees’ qualifications.

The way Duterte is making appointments to his Cabinet is “worrisome,” Abe said.

“It’s like pointing at people and naming them to positions,” he said.

Lobbying politicians

In an interview with Inquirer.net, Abe said politicians lobbied for some of the appointments.

Quoting Duterte’s spokesperson Peter Laviña, Abe said reelected Las Piñas Rep. Mark Villar was initially considered for the trade and industry portfolio, but Duterte’s vice presidential running mate, Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, lobbied for him to be named public works secretary.

There was no immediate comment from Cayetano on Friday.

Abe said those who comprised Duterte’s cordon sanitaire were people from the office of the Davao mayor.

“But this is now the national scene. We should no longer think local because Mayor Duterte’s administration has to succeed,” Abe said.

Since Thursday, Abe has been quoted in news reports as saying Quiboloy is hurting as the self-styled pastor has been left out by Duterte in the selection of members of his Cabinet.

‘Voice’ in selection

Abe said Quiboloy felt he should “have a voice” in the selection of Cabinet officials, being the spiritual adviser of Duterte and his friend for the past 30 years.

“Pastor Quiboloy is not interested in a quid pro quo but he wants to be included in the selection process, to have a voice in the process, but he will not make any recommendations in terms of accepting or rejecting a nominee. What he wants is to take part in vetting the qualifications of a nominee, to help in double-checking their backgrounds, especially for the sensitive positions,” Abe said.

Quiboloy, 66, claims to be the “appointed son of God.” He says that 16 years ago, he predicted that Duterte would be elected President in a landslide.

He had an airplane and a helicopter on standby 24/7 for his friend throughout the three-month campaign, part of a three-decade friendship that included daily phone calls, golf games and motorbike rides, but why is Apollo Quiboloy now sidelined as Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte prepares for the presidency?

In an unexpected move, the camp of the founder of the homegrown Christian sect Kingdom of Jesus Christ, the Name Above Every Name, on Friday openly criticized the presumptive President-elect’s men, saying they had set up a cordon sanitaire around Duterte that left out his own spiritual adviser.

“It’s quite a powerful cordon sanitaire that left out the original supporters of Mayor Duterte, including Pastor Quiboloy himself. It pains us and it saddens us,” Mike Abe, a spokesperson for Quiboloy, told the Inquirer by phone in Filipino.

Abe named Duterte’s longtime executive assistant, Christopher “Bong” Go, and incoming presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo as the ones controlling the cordon sanitaire.

He said the last time Duterte and Quiboloy spoke to each other was at 2 a.m. on May 10, adding he was there.

“After that, their communication was already cut off. We believe there are people getting in the way of the two friends,” Abe said.

Lagen has a poolside bar and Clubhouse restaurant that serves Filipino cuisine like arroz caldo and chicken inasal, as well as some traditional American foods. Do not miss the mangoes, which were the best I’ve ever tasted in my life. Just the right amount of sweetness and tang, and so juicy they could barely stay on my fork. There is a pool, spa and gym on property, as well as hiking trails around the island. The staff and hospitality is exceptional. The pride in El Nido can be heard in every locals’ voice, and rightfully so.

Water lovers will find limitless options at Lagen and its surrounding area. Diving, snorkeling, and paddle-boarding are just a few of the activities offered. A trip to the infamous Big and Small Lagoon in Miniloc Island is a must. Book a private boat, called a Bangka, to the locations. On the journey, you will pass white sand beaches, limestone cliffs, coral, and, if you’re lucky, a few sea turtles and other sea life. The lagoons contain crystal clear water and jagged black limestone cliffs made from million year old fossils. It is, in a word, astonishing. In the small lagoon, kayaks wade their way through pristine waters and snorkelers enjoy a swim through shaded grottos. It’s hard not to blink twice and utter, wow at least once.

After a morning of lagoon hopping,  a poolside lunch at Pangalusian Island provides ample opportunity to relax and enjoy freshly grilled fish and a large wine selection. For a more intimate dining experience, Lagen Island offers sand bar dinners in the middle of the ocean and private beach experiences that include a sunset that will leave onlookers speechless. The only thing better? Sunrise, when you can experience it all again.

El Nido Resorts consist of four eco-friendly islands around Palawan. Lagen Island Resort’s stilted water bungalows welcome guests traveling by boat. It’s a dreamy vision to behold from afar, and the quintessential over water getaway everyone dreams of experiencing. Nestled between a lush rainforest and turquoise lagoon, Lagen is an intimate property for the traveler who revels in the feeling of time standing still. It is a wildlife sanctuary and the finest example of Mother Nature showing just how limitless her creations can be.

There are 51 rooms on property, including 18 water cottages and four suites.  Room amenities include cable television, an iPod dock and WiFi.  Though the sunset can be seen from nearly every corner of the property, the view from a cozy deck in the water cottages when the light bounces off the ocean below is magical.

There are some places you visit and can’t decide whether you want to scream them to the world or keep secret because they’re just too good to share. El Nido in the Philippines is one of those places. Located in the province of Palawan in Bacuit Bay, the region was discovered nearly 22,000 years ago. Though it tops the list of nearly every travel pick for best beaches and diving in the world, depending on your location, the journey there is not for the faint of heart. However, to make the trek would be one of the best decisions any travel lover could make.

Jagged limestone cliffs accented with green foliage surged from the ocean like a surreal painting or scene from Jurassic Park. Above, a suspended full moon in the pitch black sky was the only light to guide us home. Hours before, the sun sunk into an otherworldly fuchsia and orange sky dotted with cotton candy clouds. Even the sounds of our boat’s engine could not obstruct the sheer tranquility of the moment. In the middle of calm waters, hundreds of miles from any city or hordes of people, I finally understood why sometimes the best moments are always worth the travel time.

The end is nigh, society is crumbling, and civilization is falling apart. People are scrambling for whatever supplies they can find in order to make it through the night. Chances are, you’ve been part of (or at least overheard) a conversation about what you’d require to get you through the apocalypse. You probably have never heard someone say that they’d like to be left-handed, but perhaps that should actually be the first answer they think of. If you’ve seen Rocky, you know how much of an advantage left-handed fighters have, and studies have shown that the more lawless the society, the greater that advantage is.

The baseline for the population’s percentage of left-handed people is around 10 percent, but in some societies that number is far greater. Among Venezuela’s Yanomami tribe, about 5 in every 1,000 people are murdered yearlyâ€"and about 23 percent of the population is left-handed. For the Eipo in Indonesia, the murder rate is 3 in 1,000, and they’re about 27 percent left-handed. And then there are the people of Jimi Valley in Papua New Guinea, who have a murder rate of 5.4 in 1,000 and an above-average instance of left-handed people at 13 percent.

The study, conducted by the Institute of Evolutionary Sciences, University Montpellier, shows a measurable difference between the most violent societies and the most peaceful ones. For instance, the Dioula from West Africa have a murder rate of 0.013 in 1,000 murder and a left-handed rate of only 3 percent. Researchers conjecture that the advantage of being left-handed in a violent society isn’t just a matter of survival, it’s a matter of natural selection and allowing one generation to pass its left-handed traits on to the next. -- http://listverse.com/

TWO Chinese fishing vessels with 25 crew members and flying inverted Philippine flag were apprehended off Batanes province, the Department of Agriculture (DA) said Tuesday.

The joint elements of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) were conducting seaborne patrol aboard BFAR vessels MCS 3010 and MM Patrol Boat 3049 when they chanced upon Chinese fishing vessels Shen Lian Cheng 719 with 12 crew members, and Shen Lian Cheng 720 with 13 crew members on board on May 16 between the waters of Babuyan Island and Batanes.

"Both fishing vessels were observed to be flying inverted Philippine flag within Philippine archipelagic waters," the DA said in a statement.

The two ships were registered with the People's Republic of China and had no prior authorization to traverse Philippine waters, it said.

The fishing vessels were escorted to Basco, Batanes for further investigation.

"Based on existing rules, the fact that both foreign fishing vessels were flying Philippine flag gave rise to the presumption that they are engaged in poaching, as there seems to be an attempt to conceal the vessels’ true identity to enable themselves to engage in fishing activity in Philippine waters. We will ensure however that the incident will be thoroughly investigated following the proper procedures," DA Undersecretary for Fisheries Asis Perez said.

He said BFAR has already communicated with the Department of Foreign Affairs to inform the agency of the incident and requested official interpreters to be sent to Basco during the investigation process.
The Chinese Embassy through the DFA will also be formally notified, he added. (SDR/Sunnex) -- http://www.sunstar.com.ph/
