Yee and Gilbert also suggested that exposure to triclosan could be even more detrimental to the health of developing fetuses and newborns than to adults. A 2014 New York University study found that gut disruptions in early infancy could have lasting negative effects on immune and brain development.

The authors suggest that further studies are needed to understand the chemical’s effects on the human body.

Triclosan could also be contributing to antibiotic resistance, which scientists believe is caused by the overuse of antimicrobials in humans and animals. There are partial bans of the chemical in the European Union and in Minnesota, and the FDA says it will continue reviewing the chemical for its safety.

“Future research should explore the role of dose, timing, and route of triclosan exposure,” the paper’s authors wrote. “Humans are exposed to triclosan transiently and in small doses, but the presence of triclosan in surface, ground and drinking water indicates its potential to persist and accumulate in the environment.”

The latest research paper, written by academics from the University of Chicago, focused on the lesser-known effects of triclosan exposure on the bacteria in people’s guts.

Disturbing the human microbiome has been “linked to a wide array of diseases and metabolic disorders, including obesity, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and behavioral and metabolic disorders,” wrote the paper’s authors, Alyson L Yee and Jack A Gilbert.

Yee and Gilbert examined conflicting research on just how the chemical impacts gut microbiomes. Studies using zebrafish and fathead minnows found that triclosan changed gut bacteria, but that the microbiomes recovered once exposure to the chemical was stopped. However, another study on biofilms in rivers found that the gut remained altered even after triclosan was removed.

To test the chemical’s effect in humans, researchers from Stanford and Cornell universities gave seven volunteers triclosan-containing products, such as toothpaste and liquid soap, to use for four months. After that period, the same volunteers were switched to products without triclosan. The volunteers were compared with a second group who first used the non-triclosan products, then changed to those containing triclosan.

The results showed that more triclosan was found in the urine of all the participants during the periods when they were using triclosan-containing products.

Antibacterial products are found in hospitals, personal products and at home. However, recent studies say they may do more harm than good

Antimicrobial chemicals found in common household products could be wreaking havoc with people’s guts, according to a research paper out this week in the journal Science.

Triclosan is an antibacterial compound used in soaps, detergent and toothpaste, as well as toys and plastics. It was originally only used in hospitals, but it found its way into homes as Americans became more germ-phobic. (However, recent studies have found it no more effective at killing bacteria than plain soap.)

Now, there are growing concerns about the possible negative effects of the chemical on human health and the environment. According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), animal studies have shown that the chemical can act as a hormone disruptor. A 2008 study found traces of triclosan in the urine of 75% of the participants â€" some as young as six. The chemical has also been found in more than half of freshwater streams in the US.

Of the parasites, one stood out â€" the liver fluke.

That's because the location of the archeological site is situated in a dry area of the country. In fact, it's not too far away from China's Takla Makan Desert. The thing is, Chinese liver flukes are only native to wet marshy areas, so there's no way it could have been living in the area of the latrine. In fact, Mitchell says, it must first pass through a water snail and then a freshwater fish which much be eaten raw before infecting humans. Because no such animals exist near the latrine, the parasite must have been brought there by a traveler.

So just how far did that traveler bring his unfortunate cargo?

According to the researchers, based on current conditions, the only area it could have come from is about 1,500 km (923 mi) away. And today, the area where most of the infections are found is even farther, at 2,000 km (1,243 mi) away.

"When I first saw the Chinese liver fluke egg down the microscope I knew that we had made a momentous discovery," said Hui-Yuan Yeh, one of the study's authors. "Our study is the first to use archaeological evidence from a site on the Silk Road to demonstrate that travellers were taking infectious diseases with them over these huge distances."

While it's been previously suggested that major diseases like the bubonic plague, leprosy and anthrax spread along the Silk Road, the researchers say that there's never been hard-and-fast proof, because the organisms could have taken a different route between China and Europe.

"Our finding suggests that we now know for sure that the Silk Road was responsible for spreading infectious diseases in ancient times," says Mitchell. "This makes more likely previous proposals that bubonic plague, leprosy and anthrax could also have been spread along it." -- http://www.gizmag.com/

Ancient Silk Road hygiene sticks lead to a "fluke" discovery
Michael Franco
July 22, 2016

The hygiene sticks with cloth remnants that the researchers analyzed to study the spread of disease along the Silk Road (Credit: Hui-Yuan Yeh)

Thousands of years ago, travelers and traders carried goods across the vast distances between Europe, the Middle East and Asia along routes that collectively become known as the Silk Road. Named after the silks that were exported from China, the routes helped spread news, art and culture through a large part of the world. Now, a new study focused on a 2,000-year-old Silk Road latrine shows that the routes also helped spread something else â€" disease.

A team of researchers from the University of Cambridge and China's Academy of Social Sciences and Gansu Institute for Cultural Relics and Archaeology investigated latrines at the Xuanquanzhi relay station, an archeological site in northwestern China that once served as a rest stop of sorts along the Silk Road. It was built in 111 BC and used until 109 AD (the Silk Road itself is generally acknowledged to have existed from about 130 BCE to about the mid 1400s).

There they found hygeine sticks that had bits of cloth stuck to them that were used by people to clean up after using the latrine. Based on their function, the sticks also held bits of ancient feces. By analyzing the feces, the researchers found the eggs from four species of parasitic worms: roundworm, whipworm, tapeworm and Chinese liver fluke.

"This may seem surprising," writes Cambridge researcher and study co-author Piers Mitchell on academic site The Conversation, "but the eggs of many species of intestinal worms are very tough and may survive thousands of years in the ground."

Since Zhou had a hard time speaking English, Mariano So, an interpreter, translated the standard Miranda warning, which an AVSEU 7 officer read aloud.

Zhou, a former nurse, burst into tears and wailed: “I don’t know!”

According to the AVSEU initial investigation, this was the third time that Zhou came to Cebu this year. She also arrived last March and then last May.

It was learned that Zhou is currently unemployed and that she had been instructed by a Canadian national, who is a friend of her cousin’s in China, to deliver the suitcase to Cebu.

In her previous travels, she was met by three Filipinos, a male and two females, at the airport who would bring her to a hotel in Lapu-Lapu City, where she would stay for three days before going back to China.

Zhou was still being held by the airport police as of press time. . (VLA/Sunnex)

Hachiko’s help

The dog suddenly sat on the bag, a signal that it may have contained contraband that the dog had been trained to sniff out.

“Niingon ko Sir nga positive gyud Sir kay nag-indicate man atong alaga (I told them that it was likely to be positive because the dog smelled contraband) so they decided to call our main office to make sure,” Estillore said.

Customs and AVSEU authorities opened the lining of the suitcase and found a piece of plywood, which concealed the 11 packs of the substance. The packs were held in place with packaging tape.

Campo said that in its initial test, the PDEA found methamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu in the substance contained in the packs.

Campo said the PDEA chemist will conduct a confirmatory test.

Zhou’s passport showed that she hails from Hunan, a mountain province in Southern China. She was born last Feb. 27, 1989. Her passport was issued by the People’s Republic of China last Jan. 15, 2016 and was good until Jan. 15, 2026.

Collector Gerry Campo of the Bureau of Customs (BOC) Port of Mactan said that Liming Zhou, 27, arrived in Mactan at 11:25 a.m. on board Cathay Pacific Flight CX921 from Hong Kong.

Customs Cebu District Collector Rico Rey Holganza said that when Zhou’s light blue suitcase passed under the scanning machine, customs personnel noted a bulge on its side.

When asked if she had declared some goods, Zhou said she did not, which prompted the personnel to open her luggage with her consent.

“Kon imong tan-awon, patag ra ang sud sa bag. So, gitago-an (If you just looked outside, it wasn’t bulky. It seems that whatever was inside was hidden),” Atty. Holganza told Sun.Star Superbalita.

Customs personnel decided to open the lining of the suitcase after a trained dog from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) reacted to the luggage.

In a radio DyAB report, PDEA 7 K-9 handler Olibert Estillore said that customs personnel called their attention to a suspicious-looking item inside Zhou’s bag.

This prompted Estillore to let his Belgian Malinois, named Hachiko, check the Chinese national’s suitcase in the presence of personnel from BOC and the Aviation Security Unit (AVSEU) 7.

Grim Reminder

Shares of Bloomberry Resorts Corp., owner of Solaire, sank 4.5 percent in Manila, heading for the biggest loss in three weeks. Travellers International Hotel Group Inc., operator of Resorts World Manila, slid 0.8 percent, halting a five-day gain, while Melco Crown Philippines Resorts Corp. slumped 5 percent to a three-week low.

“Okada is coming to town, a grim reminder to investors of the oversupply facing an industry that is already competitive," said Jonathan Ravelas, chief market strategist at BDO Unibank Inc. “This is a serious property and the question is who among the existing players will get hit the most. This is the time to capitalize on gains."

Entertainment City

Okada is embroiled in a high-profile lawsuit against Wynn Resorts Ltd. after the company accused the Japanese tycoon of making improper payments to Philippine gambling regulators and forcibly redeemed his 20 percent stake in the casino operator in 2012. Okada has denied the allegations, and the suit is on-going.

Okada Manila will be the third casino resort to open in Entertainment City and the largest with over 26,000 square meters of gaming space. It will compete with a project by Philippine billionaire Enrique Razon’s Solaire, and City of Dreams Manila, a venture between Melco Crown Entertainment Ltd. and the Philippines’ richest man, Henry Sy. The fourth property, a project by Philippine billionaire Andrew Tan and Malaysian tycoon Lim Kok Thay, is expected to open in the fourth quarter of 2020.

Traffic at Okada Manila, which is built on 44 hectares facing Manila Bay’s sunset, will initially be a mix of 30 percent foreigners and 70 percent locals. The casino wants half of its clientele to be overseas visitors including Chinese, Japanese and Koreans after a year as the resort conducts marketing among travel agents and gambling promoters, Usui said.
#2938

“The gaming industry in Philippines should have the best performance ever in the second quarter ended in June as more gamblers are leaving Macau amid its stricter gaming regulation,” said CLSA Ltd. analyst Marcus Liu Tuesday. The large investment “underscores Okada’s commitment and confidence in the Philippines’ gaming market,” he said.
#2939
The Manila resort could cost $3 billion in its first phase and reach $4 billion when three more phases are built, making it the tycoon’s “biggest investment,” Usui said in an interview Tuesday in Manila. That would be about twice the 208.3 billion yen ($1.96 billion) market capitalization of Universal Entertainment, the Tokyo-based maker of gambling machines in which Okada Holdings controls a 68 percent stake.

Gambling Hub

Manila is aspiring to become the next Asian gambling hub as high-stakes Chinese gamblers increasingly abandon Macau amid the Chinese government’s crackdown on corruption. Okada’s project is one of four casino resorts the Philippines wants built on a 120-hectare property along Manila Bay, dubbed Entertainment City, as the nation seeks a larger share of Asia’s gaming and tourist revenue.

Kazuo Okada, Universal Entertainment Corp. chairman and former Steve Wynn partner, plans to challenge Macau in wooing Chinese gamblers to his Manila casino resort that could cost $4 billion and is scheduled to open in November.

Okada, 73, wants his casino featuring a 100 meter (328 feet) dancing water fountain and indoor beach “to compete with what is in Macau” and other parts of Asia, said Takahiro Usui, chief operating officer at Universal Entertainment’s Tiger Resort Leisure and Entertainment Inc. “This project will promote Manila as a destination in the region and the world.”

Universal Entertainment rose 9.6 percent to 2,597 yen in Tokyo trading Wednesday, the biggest gain since June 2013. The benchmark Topix was little changed.

The Philippines would refuse to be compelled to reduce emissions and then be made to pay alone for the high cost of renewable energy, she said.

Sering expressed hope the Philippines would continue to support the historic Paris agreement.

It is not just about reducing emissions, but also about climate change adaptation, according to Sering.

She also noted that the Philippines took a leadership role in the talks, especially with regard to call to limit the increase in temperature to 1.5 C above pre-industrial levels.

If the Philippines would not ratify the agreement, she said it would not restrict the Philippines’ actions, but the country’s credibility might be affected.

“We might lose out on grants. That is free money. It’s not a loan. It will impact solar investments,” she said.

But Sering also said that even before the Paris agreement was signed, the Philippines had put in place policies geared toward addressing climate change.

AMBASSADOR COMMITTED FAUX PAS BY IMPOSING CARBON EMISSIONS CUTS ON DUTERTE - SERING

MANILA â€" President Duterte’s statement on his refusal to honor the Paris Agreement on climate change could have been a reaction to an improper question from an ambassador, according to Mary Ann Lucille Sering, a former vice chair of the Climate Change Commission.

Sering, who expressed hope the Philippines would not pull out of the Paris agreement, said Mr. Duterte might have been irked when the ambassadorâ€" still unnamedâ€" asked him about the Philippines maintaining a certain level of carbon emissions, as that amounted to an imposition.

“In a diplomatic perspective, you don’t ask that question because that’s an imposition on us. It’s a diplomatic faux pas to even ask that question,” Sering said in a phone interview.

The Philippines’ commitment to reducing carbon emissions was conditioned on support from the international community, she said.

“What we said was we can’t reduce unless we’re supported,” she said.

“In short, if you don’t give us any support, we will continue our sustainable development, our economic development that may rely still on dirty but cheap [energy]. But if you want us to use clean, make those energy sources cheaper,” she added.

Communist neighbor’s position on last week’s landmark South China Sea ruling and was interested in advancing two-way talks on the disputed waterway.

Phuc told Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in Mongolia last week that he didn’t endorse China’s stance on the international tribunal’s ruling, the Vietnamese government said in a statement late Monday. Phuc reiterated Vietnam’s welcoming of the court’s decision, which found no legal basis for China’s claim to "historic rights" to resources in the area.

Vietnam "declares it refutes untruthful coverage by Chinese media regarding the East Sea issue from the meeting" between Phuc and Li, the government said, using Vietnam’s preferred term for the South China Sea.

The Vietnam rebuke comes as China touts what it says are dozens of international backers for its stance on the South China Sea, as it seeks to show at home it has widespread support after the ruling went against it. It highlights the difficulty for China in walking a line between President Xi Jinping’s “neighborhood diplomacy” and in continuing its assertions to sovereignty -- and its military buildup -- in the waterway. The risk now is China receives further public rebuttals.

While China has traded with the west via central Asia since antiquity, it's likely that even then ocean routes through hubs in southern India were taking the bulk of the traffic. A single Roman cargo ship could shift 350 metric tons or more, about what can be carried by 4,000 camels. Writing around the lifetime of Jesus, the Greek geographer Strabo noted that about 120 ships a year were sailing from Egypt to India. The first Roman ambassadors to China appear to have arrived by sea in the second century A.D., carrying ivory, rhinoceros horn and turtle shells that seem to have been picked up in India, Southeast Asia or Africa.

For all that the global shipping industry is in the doldrums, infrastructure investors tempted to come in on Xi's projects should stick to the high seas.

With the exception of some much needed oil and gas-export infrastructure, most of China's planned investments in central Asia seem to have limited economic logic. Arguably, they're more about deepening ties with regional governments, providing work for Chinese industrial companies and damping separatist tendencies in its own Xinjiang province.

A much-touted rail link between Madrid and the Chinese city of Yiwu southwest of Shanghai had carried just eight trains-full of Spanish exports in its first 15 months in operation, El Pais newspaper reported in March. With ocean-freight rates running about a third cheaper than rail, even the offer of free advertising on Chinese state-run television for companies that use the route hasn't sparked much traffic.

Long railway journeys through expansive Kazakh steppe sound terribly romantic. When it comes to real trade, though, shipping is always going to be where it's at. -- http://www.bloomberg.com/

Xi's Deserted Desert Road
By David Fickling
Jul 19, 2016 12:05 PM BST

Think China's plans to build railways across central Asia will be a boon for global trade? Consider this: The mighty Trans-Siberian Railway carried about as much east-west container traffic last year as you'd get on a single boat.

Transit container traffic over the network amounted to 109,000 20-foot equivalent units in 2015, its owner Russian Railways said last month. The world's biggest container ship, the MSC Oscar, can carry 19,224 TEUs and takes about two months to make the return trip from Asia to Europe.

That should be a cautionary tale for those expecting great things from President Xi Jinping's plans to build a revived overland Silk Road between China and the west. Maritime trade may not be sexy, but right now it's a lot cheaper to move things round the world on the high seas than on a train.

China's existing trade is a decent guide. Freight volumes through its major ports comfortably outstrip total rail-freight traffic through its border provinces, according to data compiled by Bloomberg -- and that comparison heavily skews things in rail's favor, given how much of the land-based traffic is domestic.

To be sure, the disparity is recognized by China. Land-based spending forms the 'belt' in Xi's 'One Belt, One Road' policy while the 'road', confusingly, consists of maritime projects such as a planned $10 billion upgrade at Malacca port in Malaysia. The $40 billion Silk Road Fund and $100 billion Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank established by Beijing will be financing both.

PRESIDENT Duterte on Monday said his administration would not honor the historic Paris Agreement on climate change that the Philippines adopted along with about 200 countries in December 2015, saying the covenant was “stupid” and “absurd.”

The tough-talking President said the international treaty, signed by countries that participated in the 21st Conference of Parties in France, would only limit the country’s industrial growth.

Speaking at sendoff ceremonies in Malacañang for Filipino athletes bound for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the President said a foreign ambassador recently reminded him of the country’s commitment to limit its carbon emissions.

He said he was angry with the ambassador and “wanted to kick him” when the diplomat, whom he did not identify, asked him if the Philippines could maintain the level of its carbon footprints.

“I said, ‘No. I cannot tell … You don’t do it that way, Mr. Ambassador. [Your country] has reached the apex [of industrialization] and along the way put a lot of contaminants and emissions, and went ahead in destroying the climate,’” the President recalled as telling the ambassador.

“We have not reached the age of industrialization. We’re now going into it. But you are trying to stymie [our growth] with an agreement that says you can only go up to here,” he added. “That’s stupid. I will not honor that.”

Signature not his

When the ambassador told him that the Philippines was a signatory to the agreement, Mr. Duterte replied: “That was not my signature. It’s not mine … I will not follow.”

The President also said the climate change agreement was forged just when the Philippines was on its way to develop its own industries.

“Now that we’re developing, you will impose a limit?” he said. “That’s absurd.”

NO BILATERAL

The panel ruled Beijing's actions in the South China Sea, through which more than US$5 trillion of trade moves annually, had interfered with the Philippines' sovereign rights. Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan and Vietnam also have claims to the strategic waterway.

There was no bilateral meeting between the Chinese and Philippines foreign ministers, a Philippine diplomatic source told Reuters, though the Chinese initially requested a meeting at the beginning of the summit.

Chinese officials did not speak to foreign reporters during the summit. China's Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the summit and the South China Sea.

State news agency Xinhua quoted Chinese Premier Li Keqiang as saying on Saturday in Ulaanbaatar that the court's decision would have "no impact whatsoever" on Chinese sovereignty and maritime rights and interests in the South China Sea.

Li had told Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe the previous day that Japan should stop interfering in the issue.

Japan met with several countries including the Philippines and Vietnam and told them Japan would cooperate with them to enforce the decision, a foreign ministry spokesman said.

ULAANBAATAR: A key summit between Asian and European leaders in Mongolia ended on Saturday without direct mention of the South China Sea dispute in its closing statement, with diplomats describing intense discord over the issue between Europe and Asia.

China has refused to recognise Tuesday's ruling by an arbitration court in The Hague invalidating its vast claims in the South China Sea and did not take part in the proceedings brought by the Philippines. It has reacted angrily to calls by Western countries and Japan for the decision to be adhered to.

China had flagged ahead of the Ulaanbaatar get-together that it did not want the South China Sea to be discussed, saying it was not an appropriate venue.

The closing statement said leaders reaffirmed a commitment to promote maritime security, safety and cooperation, freedom of navigation and overflight and to refrain from using threatening force.

It also said disputes should be resolved via international law, the United Nations charter and U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea, or UNCLOS.

European Council President Donald Tusk told reporters he hoped the court's decision would create positive momentum in finding a solution to the dispute.

"Still, it's not so easy to agree with our Chinese partners when it comes to these issues but our talks were difficult, tough but also promising," he said.

On Friday, the European Union issued a statement noting China's legal defeat but avoided direct reference to Beijing, reflecting discord among EU governments over how strongly to respond to the court ruling.

While the European Union is neutral in China's dispute with its Asian neighbours in the South China Sea, Britain, France and Germany want to make clear that Beijing must uphold international law as it seeks a bigger global role.

But speaking with one European voice has become difficult as some smaller governments, including Hungary and Greece, rely on Chinese investment and are unwilling to criticise Beijing.

Scientists widely believed that the universe’s expansion would slow down, based on their calculations of the mass of the universe. However, in 1998, two teams of scientists discovered that the universe was not only continuing to expand, but the rate at which it was accelerating was actually increasing. A hypothetical, unseen force called dark energy is the commonly accepted theory for what is influencing its expansion.

Since then, astronomers have been working to understand the phenomenon. To this end, the team working on BOSS worked to measure the size of the baryon acoustic oscillations were across galaxies. Because those oscillations serve as excellent means with which to measure cosmic expansion, the survey was able to measure how dark matter and dark energy have influenced the rate at which the universe is expanding. The result is stunning: Rita Tojeiro, an astronomer with the University of St. Andrews, said in a statement that the team saw "a dramatic connection between the sound wave imprints seen in the cosmic microwave background 400,000 years after the Big Bang to the clustering of galaxies seven to twelve billion years later. The ability to observe a single well-modeled physical effect from recombination until today is a great boon for cosmology."

This revelation is particularly important, because we haven’t been able to directly observe or measure dark energy: we can only see what affect it has on its surroundings. This map and observations help to reinforce the larger model of the universe that has emerged since the discoveries in 1998.

This new map of the universe charts out 1.2 million galaxies
Knowing where they all are helps us understand the expansion of the universe
By Andrew Liptak  on July 15, 2016 04:26 pm

In an attempt to better understand the nature of the expansion of our universe, scientists have created a 3D map plotting the locations of 1.2 million galaxies. This map may help give astronomers new details about how the universe has been expanding, which will help us learn more about the mysterious force that scientists believe has been driving the expansion.

Published in a new study, the 3D map shows 650 cubic billion light years, which is just a quarter of the known universe. Each point in this map isn’t a star: it’s an entire galaxy. The map was created by scientists working on the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), a program of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III).

This survey examined fluctuations in the density of regular matter, which serve as a "robust standard ruler for measurements of cosmic distances." Those fluctuations, called baryonic acoustic oscillations, are an ideal tool for plotting the relative positions of each galaxy. In the map, the purple dots mark the galaxies that are farthest away, while the yellow ones represent galaxies that are closer to us. This is important, because it allows scientists to figure out the relative motion of each object, which in turn lets them determine just how fast they’re moving away from one another.

Scientists have always wondered exactly how big the universe is, but it wasn’t until 1929 that Edwin Hubble (the guy they named the telescope after) began measuring how galaxies move away from an observer. This is called a redshift, which occurs as the wavelength of energy lengthens, moving toward the red end of the spectrum. Hubble recognized that this meant that the universe itself was expanding. This is a fundamental theory that led to even bigger revelations, such as the Big Bang.

The Greek archaeological site of Philippi, founded in 356 B.C. by the Macedonian King Philip II, lies in the present-day region of eastern Macedonia and Thrace. It later became an important Christian site, following the visit of Apostle Paul, UNESCO said.

The Antequera Dolmens site, in Andalusia, southern Spain, is comprised of three megalithic monuments as well as two natural mountainous formations.

The natural sea caves â€"or Gorham's Cave Complexâ€" in the British overseas territory of Gibraltar, also made the list, and provide evidence of Neanderthal occupation over a span of more than 125,000 years.

Gathered from July 10-20 in Istanbul, the committee is reviewing 27 sites of special cultural or natural significance which have been nominated for the World Heritage List.

Made of basalt and coral boulders, the 99 artificial islets of Nan Madol are home to ruins ranging from temple to tombs dating between A.D. 1200 and 1500.

Dating back to the 5th century B.C., Zuojiang Huashon rock art cultural landscape straddles steep cliffs in southwest China and represent the only trace left of the Luoyue people.

Iran's Qanat system tapped into alluvial aquifer and transported water underground across vast valleys helping sustain agricultural life and settlements in arid areas.

The Nalanda site comprises the archaeological remains of a monastic and scholastic institution dating from the 3rd century B.C. to the 13th century A.D.

The medieval tombstones and graveyards, known as stecci, combine 30 sites in Bosnia, central and southern Croatia, western Montenegro and western Serbia. Carved from limestone, they feature decorative motives and inscriptions.

ISTANBUL (AP) â€" The U.N. cultural agency on Friday placed nine new sites on its World Heritage List, including a medieval Armenian city located in northeast Turkey.

UNESCO added the old city of Ani, in the Turkish province of Kars to its prestigious list during a meeting in Istanbul. Ani, near Turkey's now closed border with Armenia, once served as the capital of the Armenian kingdom in the 10th century. Mostly abandoned after a devastating earthquake in the 14th century, the ruins include a relatively well-preserved cathedral and hold major significance for Armenians.

Other sites announced Friday include China's Zuojiang Huashan rock art cultural landscape, Iran's ancient aqueducts known as Qanat, and India's archaeological site of Nalanda Mahavihara. A transboundary site located in Bosnia, Croatia, Montenegro and Serbia, and heritage sites in Greece, Spain and Gibraltar also made the list.

The World Heritage Committee also selected Micronesia's artificial islets of Nan Madol and simultaneously placed it on the List of World Heritage in Danger.

As military vehicles rumbled through the streets of Ankara, members of Turkey's military said Friday night they had seized control of the country, ousting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has dominated the country for more than a decade.

The dramatic development plunged one of the region's most important countries into a major crisis. Television footage showed civilians coming into the streets in many places, with some waving red-and-white Turkish flags. However, it was not clear who was supporting the coup and who was opposing it.

Erdogan had been on vacation at the Black Sea, but his exact whereabouts were not immediately clear. The Turkish president â€" who has censored social media â€" did appear via FaceTime video on the CNN Turk network and called on the Turkish people to resist the military action.

“Xi Jinping has lost face here, and it will be difficult for China to do nothing,” said Bonnie S. Glaser, a senior adviser for Asia at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. “I expect a very tough reaction from China, since it has lost on almost every point. There is virtually nothing that it has won.”

Topol and Yars missiles are capable of delivering one to four nuclear warheads within roughly a thousand feet of their target, making them accurate enough to destroy American missiles in their silos. This makes them a formidable first-strike weapon capable of wiping out a significant part of the US nuclear arsenal, if the Russians were so inclined.

The giant vehicles are TELs, or transporter-erector-launchers, specialized vehicles designed to give a heavy missile a smooth ride over rough roads. TELs not only store the missile but can launch it in the field. The launch tubes can be reloaded back at base (assuming, of course, there is a base to return to). The smaller vehicles are logistic, communications, and command and control vehicles.

Mobile ICBMs are vulnerable to ground attack, particularly enemy special forces who may attempt to destroy the missiles before they are launched. The convoy relies upon a Taifun-M armored reconnaissance vehicle to detect ambushes on the ground. Taifun-M bristles with sensors, including forward-looking infra-red, radar, and traditional optics, and can allegedly detect enemy troops at 3 kilometers.

Also part of the convoy is a tracked robotic vehicle equipped with a machine gun. The unmanned vehicle can more quickly close with an enemy threat and eliminate it before the enemy can shoot at the giant, highly flammable rockets with nuclear warheads strapped to them. We've said it before, and we'll say it again: these mobile ICBMs are terrifying.

The largest country in the world by area, Russia has plenty of room to hide things. Naturally, that includes nuclear missiles. Unlike American missiles, which are stationed in concrete silos, Russian intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) are deployed on large truck-like vehicles designed to prowl the country's road networks before unleashing Armageddon.

Russia Today has a story on a Russian strategic missile exercise that involves a massive convoy traveling from European-Russian border all the way to the Mongolian border. Russian mobile ICBMs have established, permanent bases but leave in groups on month-long patrols. This particular 400-vehicle convoy includes Topol, Topol-M, and Yars mobile missiles, as well as command and control, security, and logistics vehicles.
