He said another relative walks with a limp after being beaten on his legs; a third, a Buddhist monk, was beaten so badly on the head that he bled from one ear and today cannot walk at all. Family members who work for the government lost their jobs.

The police statement merely said that 44 people had been subpoenaed.

Many Tibetans are too scared to speak out publicly against injustice, but the communities around Chalong appear to have gathered to write a remarkable open letter about the incident. The letter, first obtained by Golog Jigme, claims to have been written in the name of 700 residents across 13 communities in the area.

“These days the Chinese Communists are claiming and announcing how they are building a perfect Tibet and how free and happy Tibetans are in China, but now we have no option but to show the world an actual example of the real suffering endured by the people of the three regions of Tibet under Chinese oppression,” the letter begins.

Local officials, the letter continued, had “conspired to use force to bully the common people,” ending with an appeal to President Xi to “investigate and rectify.”

ICT said the incident reveals the extent of the impunity of officials and police in Tibet, and the fact that it took so long to reach the outside world shows how tightly information flows are restricted. Free Tibet said it “clearly exemplifies not just the brutality of life under the Chinese occupation but also how arbitrary and illogical it can be.”

Xu Yangjingjing contributed to this report.

Although police say an autopsy gave the cause of death as suicide, residents are deeply skeptical. Some reported seeing bruises on her body and said that a doctor’s report had noted a wound on her head as well as a broken neck. They also said her clothes looked as though they had been put on after her death. The lama, who had a reputation as a womanizer, has since disappeared.

In its statement, the Public Security Bureau said the two policemen were on duty at the time of her death and could not have been involved. But villagers insist that the two men were seen drinking with the lama that night and suspect a coverup. Instead of investigating, they say, the police just called in the army.

As they rounded up suspects, security forces raided and ransacked relatives’ homes, “smashing everything and stabbing knives into sacks of rice and butter,” one relative said. “We’ve only seen that kind of brutality before in TV dramas about Japanese invaders.”

The raiders confiscated photos of Tsering Tso â€" even checking mobile phones. A family member showed scars on his head from a beating that he said left his body drenched in blood. Released weeks later, he was warned by officials not to talk to anyone, but he refuses to be silenced.

In a May report, Human Rights Watch catalogued nearly 500 arrests across Tibetan parts of China between 2013 and 2015. It concluded that dissent had spread from urban to rural areas. Whereas the vast majority of arrests in the 1980s and 1990s had been of monks and nuns, most of those detained more recently were ordinary people.

Many “had merely exercised their rights to expression and assembly without advocating separatism” â€" criticizing local officials, for example, or opposing a mining development, the report said.

Yet even relatively mild protests about poor governance are increasingly seen through a political lens and labeled as “criminal acts,” rights groups say. Punishment can be severe.

The incident in Chalong “reflects the unrest and instability in Tibetan society,” said Golog Jigme, a filmmaker and former political prisoner who now lives in exile in Switzerland. “It’s not outsiders or the Dalai Lama stirring things up, it’s social issues.”

On the evening of Oct. 4, 2015, Tsering Tso had received a phone call from her boyfriend, a lama at the Gertse Dralak monastery in Chalong. He insisted that he was ill and wanted to see her.

Her father gave her a lift, only to find the lama drinking with two policemen. He left her there. The following morning, Tsering Tso’s body was found hanging from a small bridge in the town.

The family insisted that its demands were not political or ethnic in nature: The priest and policemen last seen with Tsering Tso were local Tibetans, and the family said it had no beef with the central government.

All the family wants, it said, is a proper investigation, justice for Tsering Tso and freedom for the five men in jail.

“My daughter was healthy and happy. She wouldn’t commit suicide,” her 49-year-old mother Adhey said, fighting back tears as she sat on the grass with her 83-year-old mother and two young sons.

“My beloved daughter was murdered without any justice being given by the government. Instead, they simply arrested more innocent people and sent them to jail.”

What happened on the grasslands near Chalong in Garze prefecture fits a disturbing pattern. More than six decades after Chinese troops first moved into Tibet, dissent continues to roil the plateau and, if anything, is being suppressed ever more savagely.

Control and surveillance have been dramatically tightened since riots and demonstrations broke out in Tibet in 2008, and then expanded further under Xi, with tens of thousands of party cadres sent to monitor villages and monasteries, according to a January report by the International Campaign for Tibet (ICT).

In a statement issued on its social-media account, the Ganzi county Public Security Bureau contested that version of events. It said some of the protesters had carried knives, iron pipes or stones and had caused nearly $10,000 worth of damage. The bureau ran photographs of several men climbing over a gate, but only two broken windows were shown.

The jailed men, the statement said, had either carried weapons or organized the protest and had been found guilty of “assembling a crowd to attack state organs.”

But relatives who spoke to The Washington Post outside the family’s tent on the remote grasslands said they were not convinced that any investigation had been carried out.

No one denied that a few stones had been thrown during the protest, hitting a police car and office building, but they said that as a result, their entire community had been accused of “splittism.” That is a serious crime implying support for the Dalai Lama, the exiled religious leader, or for Tibet’s independence from China.

Internet connections have been cut off in Chalong township since the incident, and relatives have been threatened with further punishment if they talk to outsiders. The village â€" a scattering of tents and yaks in a scenic, sweeping grasslands valley â€" has been told it will not get government subsidies for roads or houses for three years because of its “bad character.”

On Oct. 10, five days after Tsering Tso’s body was found, hundreds of armed soldiers arrived in the town and descended on her funeral ceremony in the remote hamlet known as Jiqie No. 2 Village in Chinese and Raghya in Tibetan, in China’s western Sichuan province.

Witnesses said more than 40 people were tied up, beaten with metal clubs, piled into a truck “like corpses” and placed in detention.

So much blood was shed, “stray dogs could not finish lapping it up,” according to a remarkable and rare open letter sent by the community to President Xi Jinping asking for justice.

Most of those detained were gradually released in the weeks and months that followed, although many went straight to the hospital.

But on May 20, five relatives and family friends were sentenced to 2  1/2 years in prison. Acquaintances say they were jailed for refusing to sign a statement absolving the police of blame for Tsering Tso’s death.

A woman’s gruesome hanging shocked Tibet â€" but police have silenced all questions
https://www.washingtonpost.com/
By Simon Denyer
August 26 at 5:00 AM

JIQIE NO. 2 VILLAGE, China â€" She was 27, a kind, hard-working woman who supported her family by herding yaks and harvesting caterpillar fungus, a prized health cure, on the high grasslands of Tibet. Last October, Tsering Tso was found hanged from a bridge in a small town near her home.

Her family and local villagers gathered outside the police station in Chalong township to demand answers: She had last been seen in the company of a local Buddhist priest and two policemen.

The authorities insisted it was suicide. Family and friends suspected foul play and demanded an investigation. That night and the following morning, an angry crowd stormed the gates of the police station, smashing windows, according to local police.

The authorities’ response was brutal, revealing much about the crackdown taking place in Tibetan parts of China and showing how unrest and unhappiness is increasingly viewed as dangerously subversive.

The birthday of Lord Krishna, better known as Janmashtami is celebrated with great gusto across the country. Every year people gather together to recite the tale of Krishna - the eight avatar of Vishnu, sing songs in his praise and celebrate Dahi handi. At Mathura and Vrindavan, there are dramatic enactments of Raas Leela that portrays the flirtatious side of this Hindu God. On the eve of Janmashtami, we take a look at how the country is gearing up for its celebration.

By interring the dictator’s remains in the national cemetery for heroes, the first casualty will be the truth, or, more precisely, the historical truth: Marcos betrayed our people on a grand scale, and in the most cynical ways possible.

Truth in a democracy is sacred; it is the basic operating principle of our system of government. This is why truth is a core value at home and in school, church, and workplace. This is why it is a convention in our political and judicial proceedings to “tell the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.” We live and die by the truth.

They noted that there are many pressures unique to this life phase including establishing a career, finding a life partner and navigating financial issues.

“It could be that age is associated with a reduction in risk factors for mental health,” said Darrell Worthy, a professor of cognitive psychology at the University of Texas A&M, who was not involved in the work. “Older adults may not have to deal with these stressors as much.”

The authors noted that the study does have some limitations.

Participants were contacted via landline, meaning the experiences of people who have only cellphones were not included in the results.

In addition, people were excluded from taking part in the survey if they had dementia, lived in a nursing home or had a terminal illness. That means the elderly participants were, on the whole, fairly healthy, which might influence their sense of well-being.

Finally, everyone involved in the survey lived in sunny San Diego. It is possible that aging in Michigan could be very different than aging in Southern California.

Still, Carstensen said the study had major implications, especially considering that within just a few years, more people on the planet will be over 60 than under 15.

“Policy leaders are saying, ‘How are we going to cope with all these old people?’ ” she said. “But a population who are in good mental health, emotionally stable, more grateful, and more likely to forgive are a pretty great resource for a society with so much strife and war.” (deborah.netburn@latimes.com)

Another possible explanation for the emotional benefits of aging could stem from the physiology of the brain, the authors said.

Brain-imaging studies show that older people are less responsive to stressful images than younger people.

When scientists showed older and younger adults pictures of a smiling baby â€" an image designed to make everyone happy â€" both groups exhibited increased activation in the part of the brain associated with emotion. However, while a disturbing image of a car accident evoked a lot of activity in the emotional region of the brain of young people, older people had a much more subdued response.

Arthur Stone, a psychologist and head of the USC Dornsife Center for Self-Report Science who was not involved in the study, said that while the various explanations for the aging paradox are intriguing, there is still still no definitive finding that can explain the phenomenon.

“There’s lots of speculation about why older people are happier and having better moods even when their cognitive and physical health is in decline, but we still don’t have anything that fully explains what is going on,” he said. “It’s a big puzzle, and an important puzzle.”

Another important finding of the study is that despite our culture’s obsession with youth, it turns out that the 20s and 30s are generally a very stressful time for many young adults who are plagued by anxiety and depression.

“This ‘fountain of youth’ is associated with a far worse level of psychological well-being than during any other period of adulthood,” the authors said.

In her own work, she has found evidence that people’s goals and reasoning change as they come to appreciate their mortality and recognize that their time on Earth is finite.

“When people face endings they tend to shift from goals about exploration and expanding horizons to ones about savoring relationships and focusing on meaningful activities,” she said. “When you focus on emotionally meaningful goals, life gets better, you feel better, and the negative emotions become less frequent and more fleeting when they occur.”

The authors of the new work also suggest that improved mental health in old age could be due to the wisdom people acquire as they grow older.

Jeste defines wisdom as a mutli-component personality trait that includes empathy, compassion, self-knowledge, openness to new ideas, decisiveness, emotional regulation and doing things for others rather than for yourself.

“As we get older, we make better social decisions because we are more experienced, and that’s where wisdom comes into play,” he said.

There were no dips in well-being in midlife, and no tapering off of well-being at the end of life.

Instead scientists found a clear, linear relationship between age and mental health: The older people were, the happier they felt.

“The consistency was really striking,” said Dilip Jeste, director of the UC San Diego Center for Healthy Aging and senior author of the study. “People who were in older life were happier, more satisfied, less depressed, had less anxiety and less perceived stress than younger respondents.”

The results were published Wednesday in the Journal of Clinical Psychology.

Experts on the psychology of aging say the new findings add to a growing body of research that suggests there are emotional benefits to getting older.

“In the literature it’s called the paradox of aging,” said Laura Carstensen, director of the Stanford Center on Longevity, who was not involved in the work. “How can it be that given the many well-documented losses that occur with age, we also see this improvement in emotional well-being?”

As it happens, Carstensen does not think this is a paradox at all.

Believe it or not, there are upsides to getting older.

Yes, your physical health is likely to decline as you age. And unfortunately, your cognitive abilities like learning new skills and remembering things is likely to suffer too.

But despite such downsides, research suggests that your overall mental health, including your mood, your sense of well-being and your ability to handle stress, just keeps improving right up until the very end of life.

Consider it something to look forward to.

In a recent survey of more than 1,500 San Diego residents aged 21 to 99, researchers report that people in their 20s were the most stressed out and depressed, while those in their 90s were the most content.

President Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday fired all presidential appointees in government by declaring their posts vacant.

Citing continuing corruption in government “especially in the regulatory agencies,” Duterte told the appointees: “Consider your positions vacant as of this hour.” He spoke at about 2 a.m. during a press conference.

The President noted that corruption was giving “headaches to  fellow human beings.”

He stressed that his order included “all” presidential appointees. “It will number in the thousands” all over the country’s bureaucracy.

It was unclear if the order included positions of those he recently appointed and swore into office in Malacañang.

“Until now, in my provincial visits, I still hear corruption being committed,” the Chief Executive said.

He singled out the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) and the Land Transportation Organization (LTO).

The President ordered the current head of the LTFRB, lawyer Martin Delgra, to report to him in Malacañang.

Duterte also pointed to the head of the LTO and all presidential appointees in the agency.

He clarified that career officials and employees were not included in the order. CBB/rga

Germany is planning to urge its citizens to stockpile food, water and other supplies in the event of a catastrophe or armed attack.

According to a report by German broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW), citing the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung newspaper, the move would be the first of its kind since the end of the Cold War.

The proposal is reportedly contained in a government civil-defense-strategy document, which says that people should stock 10 days worth of food and a sufficient supply of water, energy, money and medicine that would allow them to stay put long enough for the government to respond.

The mood in Germany has been unsettled recently following a number of horrific incidents. In the latest violence, on July 24, a Syrian suicide bomber injured 15 people at a music festival in the central German town of Ansbach. The same day, a Syrian refugee killed a woman and injured two others with a machete in Reutlingen. Just days previous, an ISIS-inspired attacker was shot dead after stabbing several people on a train in the south of the country.

The huge influx of refugees â€" Germany accepted more than a million last year â€" has sparked fears among many Germans that terrorists have entered the country under the guise of seeking asylum.

Further details about Germany’s civil-defense strategy will be released on Wednesday, DW says, adding that its release comes amid “a raft of new security measures in the country.” [DW]

Confronted with projections of global power shifts, American triumphalists tend to put their hopes either in Chinese stagnation or collapse, or else in a miraculous rejuvenation of American wealth and power. But projections like the ones I have cited assume slower Chinese growth going forward.

Nor is there much the United States can do to boost its share of global GDP. The U.S. fertility rate is below replacement, and yet even admitting enough immigrants to maintain population stability may be difficult, given the public backlash against mass immigration. Because of low labor-force growth, American GDP growth will be slower than in the past and determined largely by the pace of productivity growth. American hawks who propose cuts in entitlements for the elderly to fund higher defense spending are living in a dream world. In a budgetary showdown between American retirees and the Pentagon, the Pentagon will lose.

The overall picture is clear, even though details may turn out to be wrong. By the middle of this century, most of the world’s industry and military potential are likely to be concentrated in four places: China, India, Europe and the United States. In the emerging polycentric world, no single superpower like the late-twentieth-century United States will exist to provide global security and to promote a single set of economic rules. A multipolar world is likely to be a more fragmented world of regional spheres of influence and shifting security alliances reinforced by strategic trade and investment deals. Even if new cold wars are averted, the peace among major countries is likely to be not warm friendship, but a wary cold peace.

The United States will continue to be one of the Big Three or Four economic powers, and one of the Big Two or Three military powers, as far as the eye can see. But it will have to adjust to the loss of its status as the world’s largest economy and the world’s only superpower. Robert Kagan has written that superpowers can’t retire. But they can be forced to share the stage.

The world’s second-largest economy, which the United States already is when measured by purchasing power parity and will soon be when measured by market exchange rates, simply cannot function as a market of first resort for export-oriented countries, in the way that an older United States enabled the development of Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. Most of the growth of the global middle class in the future will take place in China, India and other parts of the non-Western world.

At the moment, the United States is determined to remain the military hegemon in four regions: East Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America. But as China grows in wealth and power, the U.S. attempt to thwart its regional hegemony in East Asia may prove to be as doomed as would have been a British attempt to contain the United States in North America after 1900. If China and India successfully assert their own spheres of influence, after the model of America’s Monroe Doctrine, the United States may have no choice but to retreat from globalism.

In theory, the United States could augment its strength by maintaining the transatlantic alliance. Europeans might welcome U.S. aid in protecting them from dangers from the Middle East and North Africa. But they would be unlikely to join the United States as allies in a Sino-American Cold War. A defensive, neutralist Europe, a sort of giant Switzerland, with a foreign policy toward the Chinese, Indian and American titans dominated by commercial considerations, is a possible, perhaps a likely, outcome.

The standard of living in the United States will probably be higher than those in China and India for the rest of the century, if not beyond. But this is cold comfort. Even if only a fraction of the population of China or India enjoys American living standards, that elite minority could number in the hundreds of millions. And claims that America’s exceptionally innovative culture will ensure a continued technological lead is at odds with the insistence of Silicon Valley that the United States cannot continue to innovate without a constant stream of students and skilled workers who are the products of primary education in China and India, among other nations. At any rate, innovation as an element of geopolitical power is overrated. In many areas the United States was less innovative than Germany during the world wars, but prevailed nonetheless thanks to sheer demographic and industrial mass.

What about primacy as hegemony? During the Cold War, the United States acted as the hegemon of the American-led “Free World” alliance. To its allies and clients it acted as a military protector, a market for exports and provided the dollar as the world’s reserve currency. Following the Cold War, optimistic policymakers of both parties hoped that America’s alliance hegemony could be translated into enduring American global hegemony. In the emerging multipolar world dominated by continent-states like China, India and the United States, along with various medium-sized powers, no nation will be able to play the role of a military, financial or commercial hegemon.

It may take time for a new system to replace the dollar as the global reserve currency. But America’s two other hegemonic functions are already under severe strain.

For the first time since it surpassed the British Empire in the early 1900s, the United States faces a rival that, though poorer in per capita terms and still inferior in many ways, has an economy equal in scale to its own. This is a new development. America’s earlier challengers, Germany and the Soviet Union, were nowhere near the United States in their size and resources. Other nations, like Japan, were even less able to challenge U.S. economic and potential military primacy (which began with World War I), or U.S. international institutional hegemony (which began during and continued after World War II).

John Maynard Keynes observed: “The great events of history are often due to secular changes in the growth of population and other fundamental economic causes, which escaping by their gradual character the notice of contemporary observers, are attributed to the follies of statesmen.” The increasing frustrations in U.S. foreign policy have less to do with the failures of American leaders than with deep, long-term trends that are diffusing both wealth and power away from both the United States and Europe.

In particular, the rise of China is the indirect cause, or enabling factor, of many of America’s setbacks. China’s backing helped Russia oppose the United States and its European allies during the crisis over Ukraine. China’s assertion of its power in East Asia has inspired the United States to tighten its links with allies like Japan, while proposing a Trans-Pacific Partnership treaty that, by excluding China, looked very much like part of a frantic policy of anti-Chinese containment. To the distress of policymakers in Washington, Brazil, India, South Africa and other countries have joined China to lay the foundations for new international institutions that the United States would not be able to dominate. Adding insult to injury, America’s own allies, Britain, Germany and France, disobeyed Washington’s request and joined the Chinese-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.

The “Brexit” vote in the UK, together with the growth of nationalism and populism in Europe, has doomed the elite project of creating a federal Europe that can act as a superpower in world politics. Europe will be a rich but fragmented trading bloc surrounded by colossal continental powers, the United States, China and perhaps India.

Tomorrow’s world will be multipolar, not simply bipolar or tripolar. The rise of China and India to great-power status will allow regional powers, from Turkey to Vietnam and Brazil, to play the continent-states against one another and pursue their own independent interests.

The period between 1914 and 2014 can accurately be described as “the American century.” At some point during World War I, the gross domestic product of the United States passed that of the British Empire as a whole. Around a century later in 2014, according to the IMF, the GDP of China passed that of the United States.

After a hundred years in which it typically enjoyed a huge advantage in wealth and power over the next nearest competitors, with China the United States may finally have met a true “peer competitor.” Although per capita income in China is still much lower than in the United States, China is not only the world’s largest economy in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP), but also the world’s largest manufacturing nationâ€"producing 52 percent of color televisions, 75 percent of mobile phones and 87 percent of the world’s personal computers. The Chinese automobile industry is the world’s largest, twice the size of America’s. China leads the world in foreign exchange reserves. The United States is the main trading partner for seventy-six countries. China is the main trading partner for 124. With growing wealth comes growing power. China is now second only to the United States in its defense spending.

The United States is in long-term relative decline. In absolute terms, the America of the future will be richer. But because other countries like China and India, and other regions like Africa, are growing more rapidly, America’s share of global wealth will decline. So will America’s share of global military power, which, in the industrial era, is loosely rather than perfectly correlated with relative economic weight.

Primacy, as a concept in international relations, can refer either to polarity (a country’s share of global economic and military resources) or to hegemony (a specialized function within an interdependent international community). Whether defined as polarity or hegemony, American global primacy is coming to an end.

Projections of national shares in GDP in 2050 by think tanks, investment banks and consulting firms tend to converge at the prediction that the world will have three economic poles or coresâ€"China, the United States and Europeâ€"or perhaps four, if India enjoys rapid and sustainable growth. “The World in 2050,” a report by PwC, assigns 20 percent of global GDP (in purchasing power parity) to China, 14 percent to the United States and India, and a mere 12 percent to Europe as a whole in 2050. A 2015 report by the Economist Intelligence Unit paints a similar picture, concluding: “By 2030 the top three economies of the world will be the US, China and India. Such will be the growth of the two latter countries, in particular, that by 2050 they will each be richer than the next five (Indonesia, Germany, Japan, Brazil, and the UK) put together. This will represent a scale of wealth relative to the rest of the top ten that is unique in recorded history.” Indeed, to use PwC’s numbers, China, the United States, India and Europe together would account for around 60 percent of global GDP. Sub-Saharan Africa’s population will explode in the next few generations, but its successful development, if it occurs, will take a long time.

DAVAO, Philippines â€" President Rodrigo Duterte threatened Sunday to withdraw the Philippines from the United Nations and lashed out at US police killings of black men in his latest outburst against critics of his anti-drug campaign, which has left hundreds of suspects dead.

Duterte pointed to the haunting image of a bloodied child being pulled from the rubble of a missile-struck building in the Syrian city of Aleppo to note the inability of the US and the UN to stop such deadly conflicts, complaining that he comes under fire for the killings of criminals.

The US State Department and two UN human rights experts have urged Duterte and Filipino authorities to stop extrajudicial killings in the fight against illegal drugs and ensure law enforcement compliance with international human rights obligations. The Philippine National Police (PNP) said more than 500 drug suspects have been killed in gunbattles with police since Duterte was sworn into office eight weeks ago.

Agnes Callamard, the new UN Special Rapporteur on summary executions, suggested that Philippine officials could be held liable, saying in a recent statement that "claims to fight illicit drug trade do not absolve the government from its international legal obligations and do not shield state actors or others from responsibility for illegal killings."

Criticisms against his drug war, a problem that he says has become a pandemic, provoked an angry outburst from Duterte, who held a news conference after midnight Sunday that dragged on for more than two hours.

"Maybe we'll just have to decide to separate from the United Nations. If you're that rude, son of a bitch, we'll just leave you," Duterte told reporters in Davao, where he first built a reputation for his tough crime-busting style while serving as the city's longtime mayor.

Duterte also belittled UN work in the Philippines without providing facts, raising questions, for example, about the performance of the world body's agency that fights hunger.

If the Philippines breaks off from the UN â€" which Duterte called "inutile" and "stupid" â€" he said he would invite other countries like China and African nations to form a new international body. The UN, he said, should return Manila's financial contributions.

"Look at the iconic boy that was taken out from the rubble and he was made to sit in the ambulance and we saw it," Duterte said, referring to the photo of a 5-year-old Syrian boy, Omran Daqneesh, that has gone viral online.

"Why is it that United States is not doing anything? I do not read you," Duterte said. "Anybody in that stupid body complaining about the stench there of death?"

When asked about the possible repercussions of his remarks, Duterte replied: "I don't give a s*** about them. They are the ones interfering."

Duterte wondered whether UN officials were threatening to put him in prison and repeated that he was ready to sacrifice his life and presidency for his country.

Reacting to US criticisms, Duterte cited the string of shootings involving police and black men that have sparked protests in the US

"Why are you Americans killing the black people there, shooting them down when they are already on the ground?" he asked. "Answer that question, because even if it's just one or two or three, it is still human rights violations."

Duterte's drug crackdown has left more than 500 suspected dealers dead and more than 4,400 arrested since he took office on June 30. Nearly 600,000 people have surrendered to authorities, hoping to avoid getting killed. The arrests have further overwhelmed the country's overcrowded jails.

Germany Enters Europe's Burka Debate
LENA MASRI,ABC News
Fri, Aug 19 6:18 PM PDT

Germany’s interior minister is one of the latest European politicians to get involved in the debate about the burka, a garment worn by a tiny minority of Muslim women in Europe.

Thomas de Maiziere, Germany’s federal interior minister, has proposed a partial ban of the burka and niqab in the country. His proposal follows a series of recent terrorist attacks targeting the country, two of which have been claimed by the Islamic State.

"We're against people wearing the full veil in Germany - it has no place in our country and it doesn't comply with our understanding of the role of women," de Maiziere told journalists yesterday before discussing security issues in the wake of the recent attacks, according to Reuters.

Since 2012, Germany has also been the primary destination for asylum seekers in Europe, receiving 442,000 asylum applications in 2015 alone, according to a Pew Research Center report published earlier this month. Many of the country’s refugees are Muslim and come from Syria.

Today, interior ministers from Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats party and the Christian Social Union party agreed that women should be banned from wearing the face veil in schools and universities and while driving.

Germany’s Central Council of Muslims, known as the ZMD in Germany, said that the current debate over the burka is a distraction from the real problems that Germany is facing.

"For 10 years, the ZMD has called for a headscarf-culture with uncovered faces in schools and public institutions, but the current burka debate is a distraction from the real problems in our country and, moreover, incompatible with the constitution," the ZMD said in a statement.

The German proposal comes as Cannes and other coastal towns in France have banned the so-called “burkini” â€" a swimsuit that resembles the burka and is worn by a small number of Muslim women on French beaches. The ban was supported by French Prime Minister Manuel Valls, who said that the swimsuits are not compatible with French values and are based on the "enslavement of women."

Other French politicians disagreed. In a column for the Huffington Post, Nathalie Goulet, a member of the French Senate, wrote that part of French society is blaming “foreigners, or the Muslims, for all their problems.”

“Islam has become a tool to gain applause at meetings and likes on social media,” she wrote. “To have a rational discussion about Islam in today’s world seems impossible. People don’t want to hear it. The burkini debate is the latest piece of evidence; public debate is reduced to a rudimentary level, and shortcuts and generalizations work to spread confusion and stir hate.”

- Assimilation v multiculturalism -

Sara Silvestri, who specialises in religion and politics at City University London, said France's approach to integration was one of assimilation, whereas Britain had encouraged multiculturalism.

Neither country could claim success, she said.

"Both models of integration are in crisis: they are no longer applied or understood in a clear-cut manner, and both countries are looking at each other to learn lessons and potentially modify the way in which they deal with minorities," she told AFP.

Patrick Simon, an international migration and minorities expert at the French Institute for Demographic Studies, said the burkini debate was driving the impression that minorities, rather than the structure of French society, were the problem.

"There is a difficulty in the French integration model in accepting cultural and religious practices in the public domain," he told AFP.

Recent terror attacks bolstered the notion that diversity could threaten national cohesion, he said.

"The state discourse has gone from one of tolerance to one of exclusion regarding one section of society."

In the United States, the ban was being seen as illogical -- imposing rules to stop women having to obey rules.

The ban is about more than religion or clothing, Amanda Taub wrote in The New York Times newspaper.

It is about "protecting France's non-Muslim majority from having to confront a changing world".

The burkini was invented about a decade ago by Australian designer Aheda Zanetti, who spotted a gap in the market for Islamic sportswear.

Zanetti told AFP she was frustrated that the word now had negative connotations.

French politicians "symbolise it as an Islamic term in a bad way when it's really just a word," she said.

Such views are widely contested in Britain, both on the grounds of tolerance and practicality.

Britain's best-known example of burkini-wearing was not by a Muslim but by TV chef Nigella Lawson, who hit the headlines in 2011 when she wore a black version of it on Bondi Beach in Sydney.

- 'Wetsuit demonisation' -

A BBC look at the issue found women in Britain speaking in favour of the burkini and saying it aided integration.

"The burkini allows me the freedom to swim and go on the beach, and I don't feel I am compromising my beliefs for that," Aysha Ziauddin told the broadcaster.

Maryam Ouiles said: "It's outrageous that you would effectively be asked to uncover some flesh or leave.

"People are always complaining that Muslims should integrate more, but when we join you for a swim that's not right either."

Commentator David Aaronovitch, writing in The Times newspaper, said only "warped minds" would impose a burkini ban.

"The idea that full-length clothing provokes attacks on the wearer, as the French suggest, displays a poisonous logic," he said.

No problems are solved by this "French absurdity", only new ones created, he wrote.

Remona Aly, the communications director for the Exploring Islam Foundation, produced a list of "five reasons to wear a burkini -- and not just to annoy the French".

"Nothing says 'losing the plot' to me more than demonising what is, let's face it, a wetsuit," she wrote in The Guardian newspaper.

"Is full-piece swimwear really more offensive than seeing a middle-aged bum crack?"

London (AFP) - The ban on the Islamic burkini swimsuit on some French beaches has triggered disdain in English-speaking countries, where outlawing religion-oriented clothing is seen as hampering integration.

Newspaper commentators have condemned the ban as an absurdity, and one questioned how a burkini could be more offensive than "middle-aged bum crack" bursting out from traditional Western beachwear.

And experts said the debate raised questions about the French one-size-fits-all model of integration.

In Britain, the full-face veil is not an uncommon sight in towns and city districts with big Muslim populations, but ostensibly does not stir as strong a reaction as in France.

One of the world's most secular countries, France strongly separates religion and public life.

Defenders of the policy say a common arena without religious connotations helps avoid sectarian conflicts and encourages equality.

As a result, the burkini -- like the burqa before it -- has come under fire in France. Some deem it a garment that channels radical Islam and oppresses women.

"It is the expression of a political project, a counter-society, based notably on the enslavement of women," French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said of the burkini Wednesday.

Cockroach Milk Could Be The Next Green Health Food Craze
ANDREW FOLLETT

Cockroach milk could be next green health food craze after scientists developed a method to make it into a protein supplement.

Scientists found that female Pacific beetle cockroaches feed their young a liquid crystal milk, which is extremely nutritious. This particular species of cockroach is native to Hawaii.

“The crystals are like a complete food â€" they have proteins, fats and sugars,” Dr. Sanchari Banerjee, the leading author of the study, told The Sun Star Monday. “Cockroaches are infamous for their ability to thrive in any condition surviving without food for a month, therefore it makes sense that they could produce a formula as protein-rich as this.”

Cockroach milk could offer an environmentalist alternative to cow milk. Cows emit enormous quantities of greenhouse gases and have other environmental impacts. Up to 37 percent of the world’s methane emissions are directly related to cattle. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation has stated that cattle have a greater environmental impact than cars and trucks.

The scientists determined that cockroach milk is one of the most nutritious substances in the world; it’s three times richer in calories than buffalo milk. A taste test of the milk revealed that it had essentially no flavor.

“I discovered that these little embryos at a certain development were able to drink,” Dr. Barbara Stay, a professor emerita at the University of Iowa who was involved in the research, told National Public Radio Saturday. “What they were drinking was a liquid substance.”

Stay and other researchers discovered a method to “milk the cockroach,” by “[substituting] a filter paper in the brood sac for the embryos and you leave it there…you take it out and you get the milk.”

Researchers have even found a way to replicate the milk formulas in the lab in order to create protein supplements with the same properties as cockroach milk. The scientists plan to reproduce the milky substance using yeast. -- http://dailycaller.com/

History of the Universe: The Final Gravitational Collapse

The basic facts of the Great Leap Forward have long been known to scholars. Dikötter’s work is noteworthy for demonstrating that the number of victims may have been even greater than previously thought, and that the mass murder was more clearly intentional on Mao’s part, and included large numbers of victims who were executed or tortured, as opposed to “merely” starved to death. Even the previously standard estimates of 30 million or more, would still make this the greatest mass murder in history.

While the horrors of the Great Leap Forward are well known to experts on communism and Chinese history, they are rarely remembered by ordinary people outside China, and has had only a modest cultural impact. When Westerners think of the great evils of world history, they rarely think of this one. In contrast to the numerous books, movies, museums, and and remembrance days dedicated to the Holocaust, we make little effort to recall the Great Leap Forward, or to make sure that society has learned its lessons. When we vow “never again,” we don’t often recall that it should apply to this type of atrocity, as well as those motivated by racism or anti-semitism.

The fact that Mao’s atrocities resulted in many more deaths than those of Hitler does not necessarily mean he was the more evil of the two. The greater death toll is partly the result of the fact that Mao ruled over a much larger population for a much longer time. I lost several relatives in the Holocaust myself, and have no wish to diminish its significance. But the vast scale of Chinese communist atrocities puts them in the same general ballpark. At the very least, they deserve far more recognition than they currently receive. -- https://www.washingtonpost.com/

Mao thought that he could catapult his country past its competitors by herding villagers across the country into giant people’s communes. In pursuit of a utopian paradise, everything was collectivised. People had their work, homes, land, belongings and livelihoods taken from them. In collective canteens, food, distributed by the spoonful according to merit, became a weapon used to force people to follow the party’s every dictate. As incentives to work were removed, coercion and violence were used instead to compel famished farmers to perform labour on poorly planned irrigation projects while fields were neglected.

A catastrophe of gargantuan proportions ensued. Extrapolating from published population statistics, historians have speculated that tens of millions of people died of starvation. But the true dimensions of what happened are only now coming to light thanks to the meticulous reports the party itself compiled during the famine….

What comes out of this massive and detailed dossier is a tale of horror in which Mao emerges as one of the greatest mass murderers in history, responsible for the deaths of at least 45 million people between 1958 and 1962. It is not merely the extent of the catastrophe that dwarfs earlier estimates, but also the manner in which many people died: between two and three million victims were tortured to death or summarily killed, often for the slightest infraction. When a boy stole a handful of grain in a Hunan village, local boss Xiong Dechang forced his father to bury him alive. The father died of grief a few days later. The case of Wang Ziyou was reported to the central leadership: one of his ears was chopped off, his legs were tied with iron wire, a ten kilogram stone was dropped on his back and then he was branded with a sizzling tool â€" punishment for digging up a potato.

Who was the biggest mass murderer in the history of the world? Most people probably assume that the answer is Adolf Hitler, architect of the Holocaust. Others might guess Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, who may indeed have managed to kill even more innocent people than Hitler did, many of them as part of a terror famine that likely took more lives than the Holocaust. But both Hitler and Stalin were outdone by Mao Zedong. From 1958 to 1962, his Great Leap Forward policy led to the deaths of up to 45 million people â€" easily making it the biggest episode of mass murder ever recorded.

Historian Frank Dikötter, author of the important book Mao’s Great Famine recently published an article in History Today, summarizing what happened:

Just down the road from Stephanie's restaurant, the department store Galeries Lafayette welcomes hundreds of tour buses daily at a dedicated entrance for Chinese shoppers. Parisians tend to shun the tourist crowds, so this serves as both a way to get the tourists inside more quickly and to keep them in an area with dedicated Mandarin-speaking shop assistants.

It's chaotic inside the store, especially near closing time, when guides rush their charges in the door. Chinese shoppers can be seen pushing to get to the front of the queue for a Louis Vuitton handbag.

Stephanie is trying to do her bit to make things easier for herself and the Chinese tourists who wander out of the shops and into her restaurant. She presents them with small signs written in Mandarin, warning them about pickpockets and telling them, "If they sit, they have to drink!"

She is open about the fact that Chinese clients account for a growing percentage of her profits and is certain, amid the European financial slump, that Chinese are the future of the tourist industry.

"I told my son to study Mandarin at school," she says. "Do you know how to say 'thank you' in Chinese?"

"Xiè xie," I replied.

"Well, the first time my son tried to teach me to say 'thank you' in Chinese, I told him off, because it sounded like he was swearing in French!" she says, laughing. Stephanie was too polite to say the French version in front of the camera, but I took her word for it. It seems even with the best will in the world, simple communication can still create a clash of cultures in Paris today. --Al Jazeera

They don't make good commission by taking tourists to monuments or museums. On the big tours, those stops are scheduled for 40 minutes at most. And Paris isn't very accommodating to Chinese visitors. For instance, despite having more than 800,000 Chinese visitors last year, the Musee du Louvre does not have a Mandarin audio guide.

Fiercely competitive tour prices mean that guides are frantically trying to make their money by taking their clients on forced shopping marches around Paris. I even heard stories about guides paying tour companies to lead groups and recovering their losses through lucrative commissions offered by big department stores on duty-free purchases.

Making money out of Chinese tourists is where the Chinese tour companies speak the same language as the French.

Philip Guarino advises luxury brands about the Chinese market. "There are agreements that are made with tour operators in China," he explains. "A second agreement with the outgoing travel agency. A third with the inbound French travel agency. A fourth agreement with the local tour guide and a fifth even with the bus driver. We're talking hundreds of millions."

According to Philip, Chinese shoppers now account for up to half of luxury brand sales worldwide. Eighty-five percent of those purchases are made in Europe or the US. It's no wonder that the French government wants to double the number of Chinese tourists it receives to five million a year.

Anyone who's spent time in France will attest that perhaps the most important word is "Bonjour". It implies more than a greeting - it's also a marker of a civilised encounter.

"One woman came in here and spat on the floor," recounts Stephanie. "I just took a napkin, put it in her hand and said in French: "Take it!"

With hundreds of thousands of Chinese travellers now embarking on their first trips abroad, Stephanie's street is a microcosm of the clash of cultures occurring in many countries. But far from being against the masses of tourists who flock past her restaurant each day, Stephanie is sympathetic.

"It's not their fault, it's two different cultures," she says. "No one is telling them how we live, what our customs are."
When I went on tour with a Chinese group, I saw that in most cases, she was right. Tour operators had little interest in educating clients about French customs or culture. For them, the Chinese market is a numbers game: the number of people you can get on a bus, the number of places you can visit in as little time as possible.

Pardon your French: Chinese tourists and a clash of cultures in Paris
As Paris becomes a hot spot for Chinese tourism, cultural tensions arise between tourists and locals.
by Aela Callan

Paris, France - In the centre of Paris, on Rue de Provence, sits the bar and restaurant Stan & Co. It's a dimly lit, homely French bistro with wooden ceilings and stained glass panelling. Waiters are busy serving croques monsieurs and cups of café au lait to tables tucked in cosy bay windows.

Stephanie Verret has run the place for 25 years. But it's only in the past few that Rue de Provence has started to change. "All the people in the street sold their businesses to Chinese," she says. "Before it was like a little village with people taking coffee and croissants in the morning."

Now, lucrative Chinese restaurants and duty-free shops line the street. Crowds of Chinese tourists push down the narrow footpaths, following flag-wielding guides who hustle past each other in a race to get to the front.

Stephanie finds herself daily in a scene that looks more like downtown Beijing than Paris. "They don't say hello, they don't speak French, they don't speak English," she says, incredulous.
