PETALUMA, CALIF. (PRWEB) JANUARY 26, 2020

United Camps, Conferences & Retreats (UCCR) has announced that the nonprofit camp and retreat management organization will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2020.

UCCR was officially formed and registered as a nonprofit cooperative organization in 1970 by a group of Northern California clergy who sought to unite their efforts to manage their respective denominational camp and retreat properties. The design was to establish a central office that could handle accounting, reservations, staffing, and property oversight for seven church-owned camps and retreat centers throughout Northern California. UCCR established its first office at the San Rafael First United Methodist Church.

In 1998, UCCR moved their office to a downtown office building in San Rafael. In 2006, the central office moved to Petaluma where it is still currently located. While the first thirty-eight years were spent managing camps and retreats in Northern California, in 2008 UCCR expanded to Southern California to manage Pilgrim Pines Camp & Conference Center, a facility owned by the Southern California-Nevada Conference of the United Church of Christ.

Once it was understood that the UCCR central administrative office, located in Petaluma, California, could utilize the same management model at any location, UCCR began to offer facility management services to any camp, conference or retreat center in the United States.

Pilgrim Hills Camp & Conference Center, owned by the Ohio Conference of the United Church of Christ, was the first non-California facility UCCR managed. Since that time, UCCR has begun management of camp and retreat facilities in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Iowa, and Michigan.

UCCR is a unique cooperative model in the camp and retreat industry. All of the properties are owned by nonprofit organizations or church denominations. Member representatives from each of the member organizations make up The Owner's Council. This provides an opportunity for owners to share ideas, participate in UCCR webinars, and work in close partnership with UCCR.

The Mission Statement:
UCCR builds relationships with property owners and guests to deliver exceptional services and business resources that empower camps, conference and retreat centers to flourish.

In 1989, the Web of Life Field (WOLF) School was created as a program of UCCR to provide quality Environmental Education to schools in California. Since that time, WOLF School has grown to be one of the finest providers of science and nature-based education, primarily to elementary school age groups.

Mike Carr, UCCR President since 2005, says, "UCCR works with great customers: nonprofit groups that use the facilities to further their mission then return to improve their communities."

The organization is planning a special event to commemorate the 50th anniversary year. Past and current staff, board members, and friends of UCCR will gather in March 2020 to celebrate this unique business in the camp and retreat property management industry.

DA plans to use Mindanao program in Luzon
by Mai Gevera-Macapagat
DAVAO CITY, Jan 31, 2012. PIA –- The Department of Agriculture (DA) is now planning to replicate the certain components of the Mindanao Rural Development Program (MRDP) in Central Luzon after receiving favorable feedback from the local government units covered in the program as well as a favorable assessment from the World Bank.

Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala, during his visit in the city Monday, bared that the agency is now working together with the World Bank team in preparing for a feasibility study on how to replicate certain features of the MRDP which could be of use in other programs of the department.

"In particular we would like to ensure that the lessons on National Government-LGU engagement are shared with the new program," said Alcala.

World Bank representative Carolina Figueroa-Geron said that the plans of replicating MRDP is possible given that the DA will have to work it out and bring the decentralization model to other parts of the country.

"MRDP 1 and 2 are very good examples that have happened in Mindanao and could also be utilized in other LGUs," Geron said.

MRDP promotes national government and local government cooperation by way of cost-sharing in agricultural projects proposed by the people in the community.

The entire project has a total of $123.57 million; $83.75 million of which is sourced from the World Bank loan portfolio plus the equity of the national government and local government units.

Davao del Norte Governor Rodolfo del Rosario who is also the President of the Federation of Governors in Mindanao expressed gratitude for the opportunity given to LGUs in Mindanao.

The official asked Alcala to continue this kind of model in Mindanao while the agency is considering for the replication of such in Central Luzon.

"We ask them to continue helping Mindanao for it is during the present administration that we got a substantive share in the national budget, del Rosario said.

Alcala confirmed the statement of Del Rosario saying that Mindanao got 40 percent of the total agriculture budget. (PIA/Mai Gevera-Macapagat)

Solar energy to light up 75 more houses in off-grid areas in Negros Oriental
by Rachelle M. Nessia
DUMAGUETE CITY, Jan. 31, 2012 (PIA) -- Some 75 houses located in off-grid areas in Negros Oriental are expected to be lighted up using solar energy during the first quarter of this year.

Said houses are located in off-grid areas in Vallehermoso, La Libertad and Guihulngan towns which are within the coverage area of Negros Oriental Electric Cooperative I (NORECO I).

The solar home system technology will be installed in 25 houses in each of the three towns.

Off-grid areas are places situated in remote hinterland areas that are not connected to the power transmission grid.

Some 300 off-grid households covered by NORECO I are already enjoying electricity through solar home system technology last year, according to Lynn Manlalangit, NORECO I institutional services division manager.

The solar system units were purchased using a P10.5 million grant from the Department of Energy (DOE).

This after NORECO I was chosen as one of six pilot electric cooperatives nationwide to implement DOE's solar energy project funded by the World Bank.

"Our board of directors met last year and during that meeting it was identified which districts in our area will benefit from the 300 solar energy units," said Manlalangit in an interview with the Philippine Information Agency.

The testing districts chosen last year were the towns of Guihulngan, Ayungon and Bindoy.

"The money left over from the multi-million grant last year will be used to purchase the additional solar system units for this yea

DOST project beneficiary produces biggest 'ulang'
by Benjie S. de Yro
ILAGAN, Isabela, January 31, 2012 (PIA) -- A university professor in this capital town who is a recipient of the "Ulang project" under Small Entrepreneur Technology Upgrading Program (SET UP) of the Department of Science and Technology has produced the biggest ulang or fresh river prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) compared to the same specie produced by Regions 5, 6, 9 and 12, according Director Urduja Tejada.

"The fish farmer-professor identified as Enrico Santos whose farm is located at Barangay Marana here harvested 12 piece per kilo, breaking the existing record harvest of the Bicol region which registered 20 pieces per harvest," Tejada said.

The project is in collaboration between with DOST and the World Fish Center which provided technical assistance through the latter's Aquaculture Scientist Hermogenes Tambalque.

"We assisted five other regions in the country and this is the first time we were able to harvest such sizes," Tambalque said.

Prior to last week's ceremonial harvest attended by both agencies and other fish farmers in the area, Santos already has a ready market for his produce which he intends to sell at P350 a kilo.

From his 600 square meter pond, he will be able to net an income of P40,000 or a return of investment of 75 percent. He said he will develop another pond for his ulang as a result of such encouraging income which he earned in just four months.

REP. JOCELYN P. TULFO

PH MINIMUM WAGE IS SO LOW IT IS NEARLY SLAVE LABOR

[Low minimum wages push Pinoys to work overseas]

Many unskilled and low-skilled OFWs would rather slave it out abroad where they earn much more than suffer nearly slave labor minimum wage in the Philippines, according to ACT-CIS Party-list Rep. Jocelyn P. Tulfo.

"Kasi konti na lang, slave labor na. How can any Filipino family live decently on less than P300 or P400 a day here in our country? The minimum wage for kasambahay is worse. Kaya sila napipiltang mag-abroad at iwan mga pamilya nila. Dapat na talagang baguhin ang sistema," Tulfo said.

[Source: https://nwpc.dole.gov.ph/regionandwages/region-i-ilocos/]

The ACT-CIS congresswoman said, "our country should be upgrading the household service workers so they can work in skilled positions in hotels and hospitals, instead of homes. More dignified work for them. More importantly, we really should fix our minimum wage system which I think is one of the worst in the world."

"With the latest totals of Overseas Filipinos' remittances from January to November hitting $30.3 billion because of 4.1 percent growth, I am confident the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas would see the 2018 total of $32.213 billion surpassed when the 2019 full-year figures come in," said Tulfo, vice-chair of the House overseas workers affair committee.

"OFWs in Kuwait this year have sent home more remittances but the new partial deployment ban would affect future months' money transfers," Tulfo noted.

Tulfo said, "our OFWs can easily set a new record in the $33 billion to $34 billion range because since 2017 they have been remitting over $3 billion every December." (END)

Philippine Government / Ending the Cycle of Violence
January 26, 2020, 06:05:02 AM
Press Release:
Ending the cycle of violence

As a former official of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Galvez was assigned in Sulu in early 2000. His stint in the province allowed him to see the ugly face of war which brought untold suffering to the people and claimed the lives of his men.

This situation, he said, must come to an end.

"I lost many of my soldiers here. It's about time to change the condition of Sulu through peace and progress," Galvez said.

"And everytime the President learns about people being killed because of this so-called cycle of violence, he is hurt," he added.

According to the peace adviser, the government, through the Peace Coordinating Committee, will carry out socio-economic programs and projects to uplift the lives not only of MNLF members in Sulu, but the Bangsamoro people as a whole.

Aside from complying with the remaining commitments contained in theTRP, he bared the government will also allocate funds to the committee which shall be used to implement initiatives which seek to bring a greater sense of normalcy to the lives of residents in MNLF communities.

In particular, Galvez said the Peace Coordinating Committee will implement skills and capacity-building training and education for MNLF members that will help them make the transition to peaceful and productive civilian life.

The members, he added, will also be given financial assistance packages which they can utilize in earning sustainable incomes for themselves and their families.

Moreover, Galvez said much-needed government services such as electricity, potable water, infrastructure and sanitation will be made available in their communities.

"That is the promise of our President - a comfortable life for all. For the Filipino people to have an equitable share of the fruits development," he said.

Meanwhile, Galvez urged members of the Abu-Sayyaf Group who are operating in the island-province of Sulu to tum away from their violent, lawless ways and return to the folds of the law.

"We are appealing to you allow the government help you change your lives," he said, adding that former members of the group in Basilan are now benefiting from livelihood programs provided by the government.

"We all share the same vision here in Sulu, which is enduring peace for all. Let's get our acts together to make this happen," Galvez said. (OPAPP)

Philippine Archive / Census on Population and Housing
January 25, 2020, 06:19:50 PM

Public urged: Be counted for 2010 census on population, housing
Cebu, Philippines (1 March 2010) -- Be counted for the 2010 Census of Population and Housing on May 17-June 8, 2010!

Ariel Florendo, regional director, National Statistics Office (NSO-7) in Central Visayas issued this call to all as he makes the rounds in attending meetings, briefings and media forums for awareness and information campaign on the importance of the Census on Population and Housing.

The 2010 CPH is the entire process of collecting, compiling, evaluating, analyzing, publishing, and disseminating data about the population and the living quarters in a country.

"It entails the listing and recording of the characteristics of each individual and each living quarter as of a specified time and within a specified territory," Florendo added.

Florendo said, the NSO is mandated to take an integrated census every 10 years beginning in 1980 under PB# 72. Based on that mandate, NSO will conduct the 2010 Census of Population and Housing (CPH) in May 2010 with May 1, 2010, 12:01 A.M. as reference date and time.

"It means all population counts to be recorded shall pertain to this date and time," he added.

Florendo said, about 85,000 census personnel including enumerators, team supervisors, census area supervisors and assistant census area supervisors are mobilized for the nationwide census.

"Majority of these enumerators are teachers and the gathering of data are done through house-to-house visits and personal interviews of the household head or any responsible member of the household," the NSO-7 regional director said.

The 2010 CPH will also include visits in hospitals, sanitaria, penitentiary, military camps, convents, seminaries and others for the institutional population living in institutional living quarters.

In areas where personal interviews are not possible, the respondents are asked to accomplish the 2010 CPH questionnaire with specific instructions that will be provided by the enumerators as guide.

Florendo assures the public that any information gathered during the enumeration are held strictly confidential as guaranteed under Section 4 of Commonwealth Act #591.

He added that the same Act provides penalty, (if convicted) to any person that unjustifiably refuses to provide answers in the census questionnaire, or to anybody who knowingly gives false or wrong information.

Bohol News Archive / Model Forest in Bohol, Philippines
January 25, 2020, 06:16:42 PM
Carood pushed as model forest
Tagbilaran City (31 March 2010) -- Community initiatives set for the forest covering Carood is now being considered as a factor establishing the area as model forest in the Philippines and in Asia, reveals environment and natural resources officer Nestor Canda recently.

International Model Forest Network has proposed making Carood a model forest while assessing the local government unit and inter agency multi-sectoral consortium initiatives set for the area, the Environmental Science for Social Change said in its website.

Model forest, in this technical sense is determined by the ways in which different communities, local government units, and NGOs are attempting to link initiatives to develop integrated resource management systems to the area concerned.

Carood spans portions of six municipalities in eastern Bohol, covering about 20,500 hectares, approximately 10% is under forests and occupied by several thousand households using its resources.

To sustain resources and allow people to co-manage the area, the government, has issued some six Community-based Forest Management Agreements (CBFMAs) in Carood, for reforestation projects covering nearly 2,500 hectares of land, some in the uplands and others for coastal mangrove forests.

Straddling portions of Ubay, Alicia, Pilar, Candijay, Guindulman and Mabini, Carood, like any model forest across the globe would be determined on the basis of development approach that combines the social, cultural and economic needs of local communities with the long-term sustainability of large landscapes in which forests are an important feature.

The initiatives are voluntary and broad-based linking forestry, research, agriculture, mining, recreation, and other values and interests within a given landscape.

Carood, said to be one of the most barren of Bohol's watersheds just had huge tracts reforested by communities after civic groups like the Manila Bulletin, started putting in funds to replenish lost cover.

The Carood also provides water to the Calanggaman open dam of the Ubay Waterworks System; the Ilaya Small Reservoir Impounding Project (SRIP) and the Metro San Pascual Waterworks System both in Ubay.

It also supplies Cayacay SRIP in Alicia and Mabini; the Malinao and Bayongan dams of the Bohol Irrigation Project (BHIP) Stages 1 and 2 in Pilar and San Miguel towns, respectively and the Gabayan, Canawa, Cadapdapan, Tugas and Boongon SRIPs in Candijay, plus the Inaghuban SRIP in Pilar. Mini fire trike: Hot invention
Tagbilaran City (31 March 2010) -- Towns who could not afford expensive fire fighting equipment need to look again at this new Pinoy invention.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) has accordingly recommended a mini fire-trike, a fire fighting tool that packs equipment like a 400 liter water tank, pressure pump and a standard hose and adaptor which hooks to a water hydrant.

According to GMA reports, the minifiretruck invention by a Filipino measures 8 ft by 4 ft and is towable by a motorcycle.

First launched in Pasay City's barangay which feature narrow streets and where slipper manufacturing shops abound, the invention proves its usefulness in urban communities with accessibility problems.

Invented by Antonio Andres Sr., the mini-fire truck is also ideal for use in suppressing and stopping fire while it is on its beginning stages.

The Fire Buster is a project that resulted from the call made by BFP Director Enrique Linsangan to all Filipino inventors to invent gadgets and equipments that can be used to combat fire, a qute from PIA website shows.

The Fire Buster's primary purpose is to provide immediate response to fire breakouts and cease the fire while it's still at its primary stage or prevent the fire from getting bigger while waiting for the big fire trucks to arrive, it said.

With population in urban areas now breaching to the road right of way, streets are becoming narrower, hampering the access of standard fire fighting equipment to areas of conflagration.

The new Pinoy invention may also be very ideal for rural areas which are to far flung for the standard fire truick to immediately dispatch.

Inventor Andes Sr. stressed that his invention is also useful not only to urban areas but also to far flung barangays where fire alarm response will be quite late due to its distance from the nearest fire station.

Coastal barangays can also benefit most since they also have narrow streets and usually don't have any fire fighting equipments. The Fire Buster can also suction water source from creek, rivers and sea, reports bared.

In a job where time is of the essence, a faster deployment of capable eqyuipment to keep the fire from spreading out may come in very handy, observers have said. (PIA Bohol)

Bohol blind musicians impress PWD lobbyist
Tagbilaran City (31 March 2010) -- Impressive.

The adulation, coming from a person with disability (PWD) himself proves brimming amazement at how PWDs in Bohol have achieved normal lives and have gone mainstream.

According to Breaking Barriers for Children and Youth (BBCY) National Project Coordinator Pepito Maño, his amazement started when he saw the band of vision impaired men and women entertaining outgoing passengers at sea and air terminals here.

BBCY is a project of the Provincial Government and the Kapisanan ng mga May Kapansanan and the Danish Society of Polio and Accident Victims funded by DANIDA.

The project puts up an insititute called the Stimulation Therapeutic and Activity Center (STAC) where free therapies are dispensed for the poor children with disabilities (CWD) aged 0-14, says Ms Haidee Cubarol, Bohol STAC manager.

The center offers comprehensive physical and occupational theraphy and rehabilitation for CWDs, pres school education for special children, social skills enhancement, and oragnization of support groups, she added.

The center and its manpower support would held a child with disability to overcome his problem and make him a productive member of the coomunity, Cubarol shared.

On the other hand, Maño said with the help of the STAC, CWDs can be made to overcome their disabilities, with the institutionalization of the regular health and social service program of Bohol by virtue of an ordinance appropriating funds for the center.

Maño, a staunch advocate for the mainstreaming of PWDS and works in national PWD circuits and lobby groups came to Bohol to grace the turn-over ceremonies of the new Stimulation Therapeutic and Activity Center # 16 (STAC) at the Bohol Motor Pool complex last week.

Himself strapped to a customized wheelchair due to a physical handicap, Maño said mainstreaming PWDs in Bohol which places them as co-equals with the rest shows realisation of what the national government has been dreaming: proving that PWDs are not social budens.

In a country where many PWDs surrender to their fate and turn into beggars, Maño said PWDs are not mendicants, they can still live normal lives, while stressing on the community support needed to empower PWDS like what he got. (PIA-Bohol)

Poems and Poets / Preludes by T. S. Eliot
January 25, 2020, 04:15:40 PM
Preludes
By T. S. Eliot

     I

     The winter evening settles down
With smell of steaks in passageways.
     Six o'clock.
The burnt-out ends of smoky days.
And now a gusty shower wraps
     The grimy scraps
Of withered leaves about your feet
     And newspapers from vacant lots;
     The showers beat
     On broken blinds and chimney-pots,
And at the corner of the street
A lonely cab-horse steams and stamps.
And then the lighting of the lamps.

     II

     The morning comes to consciousness
Of faint stale smells of beer
     From the sawdust-trampled street
With all its muddy feet that press
     To early coffee-stands.

     With the other masquerades
     That time resumes,
One thinks of all the hands
     That are raising dingy shades
     In a thousand furnished rooms.

     III

You tossed a blanket from the bed,
     You lay upon your back, and waited;
You dozed, and watched the night revealing
     The thousand sordid images
     Of which your soul was constituted;
     They flickered against the ceiling.
And when all the world came back
And the light crept up between the shutters,
And you heard the sparrows in the gutters,
You had such a vision of the street
     As the street hardly understands;
Sitting along the bed's edge, where
You curled the papers from your hair,
Or clasped the yellow soles of feet
In the palms of both soiled hands.

     IV

His soul stretched tight across the skies
That fade behind a city block,
     Or trampled by insistent feet
     At four and five and six o'clock;
And short square fingers stuffing pipes,
     And evening newspapers, and eyes
     Assured of certain certainties,
The conscience of a blackened street
     Impatient to assume the world.

I am moved by fancies that are curled
     Around these images, and cling:
The notion of some infinitely gentle
     Infinitely suffering thing.

     Wipe your hand across your mouth, and laugh;
The worlds revolve like ancient women
     Gathering fuel in vacant lots.

Poems and Poets / Portrait of a Lady By T. S. Eliot
January 25, 2020, 04:10:28 PM
Portrait of a Lady
By T. S. Eliot

       Thou hast committed—
Fornication: but that was in another country
And besides, the wench is dead.
       The Jew of Malta.
     I

Among the smoke and fog of a December afternoon
You have the scene arrange itself—as it will seem to do—
     With "I have saved this afternoon for you";
And four wax candles in the darkened room,
Four rings of light upon the ceiling overhead,
     An atmosphere of Juliet's tomb
Prepared for all the things to be said, or left unsaid.
We have been, let us say, to hear the latest Pole
Transmit the Preludes, through his hair and finger-tips.
"So intimate, this Chopin, that I think his soul
Should be resurrected only among friends
Some two or three, who will not touch the bloom
That is rubbed and questioned in the concert room."
     —And so the conversation slips
Among velleities and carefully caught regrets
     Through attenuated tones of violins
     Mingled with remote cornets
     And begins.

"You do not know how much they mean to me, my friends,
And how, how rare and strange it is, to find
In a life composed so much, so much of odds and ends,
(For indeed I do not love it... you knew? you are not blind!
     How keen you are!)
To find a friend who has these qualities,
     Who has, and gives
Those qualities upon which friendship lives.
How much it means that I say this to you—
     Without these friendships—life, what cauchemar!"
Among the windings of the violins
     And the ariettes
     Of cracked cornets
Inside my brain a dull tom-tom begins
Absurdly hammering a prelude of its own,
     Capricious monotone
That is at least one definite "false note."
—Let us take the air, in a tobacco trance,
     Admire the monuments
     Discuss the late events,
Correct our watches by the public clocks.
Then sit for half an hour and drink our bocks.

     II

Now that lilacs are in bloom
She has a bowl of lilacs in her room
And twists one in her fingers while she talks.
"Ah, my friend, you do not know, you do not know
     What life is, you should hold it in your hands";
     (Slowly twisting the lilac stalks)
"You let it flow from you, you let it flow,
And youth is cruel, and has no remorse
And smiles at situations which it cannot see."
     I smile, of course,
     And go on drinking tea.
"Yet with these April sunsets, that somehow recall
My buried life, and Paris in the Spring,
I feel immeasurably at peace, and find the world
To be wonderful and youthful, after all."

The voice returns like the insistent out-of-tune
Of a broken violin on an August afternoon:
"I am always sure that you understand
My feelings, always sure that you feel,
Sure that across the gulf you reach your hand.

You are invulnerable, you have no Achilles' heel.
You will go on, and when you have prevailed
You can say: at this point many a one has failed.

But what have I, but what have I, my friend,
To give you, what can you receive from me?
Only the friendship and the sympathy
Of one about to reach her journey's end.

I shall sit here, serving tea to friends...."

I take my hat: how can I make a cowardly amends
For what she has said to me?
You will see me any morning in the park
Reading the comics and the sporting page.
Particularly I remark An English countess goes upon the stage.
A Greek was murdered at a Polish dance,
     Another bank defaulter has confessed.
     I keep my countenance, I remain self-possessed
Except when a street piano, mechanical and tired
     Reiterates some worn-out common song
With the smell of hyacinths across the garden
Recalling things that other people have desired.
Are these ideas right or wrong?

     III

The October night comes down; returning as before
Except for a slight sensation of being ill at ease
I mount the stairs and turn the handle of the door
And feel as if I had mounted on my hands and knees.

"And so you are going abroad; and when do you return?
     But that's a useless question.
You hardly know when you are coming back,
You will find so much to learn."
My smile falls heavily among the bric-à-brac.

"Perhaps you can write to me."
     My self-possession flares up for a second;
This is as I had reckoned.

"I have been wondering frequently of late
(But our beginnings never know our ends!)
Why we have not developed into friends."
I feel like one who smiles, and turning shall remark
Suddenly, his expression in a glass.
My self-possession gutters; we are really in the dark.

"For everybody said so, all our friends,
They all were sure our feelings would relate
So closely! I myself can hardly understand.
We must leave it now to fate.
You will write, at any rate.
Perhaps it is not too late.
I shall sit here, serving tea to friends."

And I must borrow every changing shape
     To find expression... dance, dance
     Like a dancing bear,
Cry like a parrot, chatter like an ape.
Let us take the air, in a tobacco trance—
Well! and what if she should die some afternoon,
     Afternoon grey and smoky, evening yellow and rose;
Should die and leave me sitting pen in hand
     With the smoke coming down above the housetops;
     Doubtful, for quite a while
Not knowing what to feel or if I understand
Or whether wise or foolish, tardy or too soon...
Would she not have the advantage, after all?
This music is successful with a "dying fall"
Now that we talk of dying—
And should I have the right to smile?

The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock
By T. S. Eliot

Let us go then, you and I,
When the evening is spread out against the sky
     Like a patient etherized upon a table;
Let us go, through certain half-deserted streets,
     The muttering retreats
Of restless nights in one-night cheap hotels
     And sawdust restaurants with oyster-shells:
Streets that follow like a tedious argument
     Of insidious intent
To lead you to an overwhelming question....
Oh, do not ask, "What is it?"
Let us go and make our visit.

In the room the women come and go
     Talking of Michelangelo.

The yellow fog that rubs its back upon the window-panes,
The yellow smoke that rubs its muzzle on the window-panes
Licked its tongue into the corners of the evening,
Lingered upon the pools that stand in drains,
Let fall upon its back the soot that falls from chimneys,
Slipped by the terrace, made a sudden leap,
And seeing that it was a soft October night,
Curled once about the house, and fell asleep.

And indeed there will be time
For the yellow smoke that slides along the street,
     Rubbing its back upon the window panes;
There will be time, there will be time
To prepare a face to meet the faces that you meet
There will be time to murder and create,
And time for all the works and days of hands
     That lift and drop a question on your plate;
Time for you and time for me,
And time yet for a hundred indecisions,
And for a hundred visions and revisions,
Before the taking of a toast and tea.

In the room the women come and go
     Talking of Michelangelo.

And indeed there will be time
To wonder, "Do I dare?" and, "Do I dare?"
Time to turn back and descend the stair,
With a bald spot in the middle of my hair—
(They will say: "How his hair is growing thin!")
My morning coat, my collar mounting firmly to the chin,
My necktie rich and modest, but asserted by a simple pin—
(They will say: "But how his arms and legs are thin!")
     Do I dare
     Disturb the universe?
In a minute there is time
For decisions and revisions which a minute will reverse.

For I have known them all already, known them all:
Have known the evenings, mornings, afternoons,
     I have measured out my life with coffee spoons;
I know the voices dying with a dying fall
Beneath the music from a farther room.
       So how should I presume?

And I have known the eyes already, known them all—
The eyes that fix you in a formulated phrase,
And when I am formulated, sprawling on a pin,
When I am pinned and wriggling on the wall,
     Then how should I begin
To spit out all the butt-ends of my days and ways?
       And how should I presume?

And I have known the arms already, known them all—
Arms that are braceleted and white and bare
(But in the lamplight, downed with light brown hair!)
Is it perfume from a dress
     That makes me so digress?
Arms that lie along a table, or wrap about a shawl.
       And should I then presume?
       And how should I begin?
    .    .    .    .    .    .    .    .    .
Shall I say, I have gone at dusk through narrow streets
And watched the smoke that rises from the pipes
Of lonely men in shirt-sleeves, leaning out of windows?

I should have been a pair of ragged claws
Scuttling across the floors of silent seas.
    .    .    .    .    .    .    .    .    .

And the afternoon, the evening, sleeps so peacefully!
     Smoothed by long fingers,
     Asleep... tired... or it malingers.
Stretched on the floor, here beside you and me.
Should I, after tea and cakes and ices,
Have the strength to force the moment to its crisis?
But though I have wept and fasted, wept and prayed,
Though I have seen my head (grown slightly bald) brought in upon a platter,
     I am no prophet—and here's no great matter;
I have seen the moment of my greatness flicker,
And I have seen the eternal Footman hold my coat, and snicker,
And in short, I was afraid.

And would it have been worth it, after all,
After the cups, the marmalade, the tea,
Among the porcelain, among some talk of you and me,
Would it have been worth while,
To have bitten off the matter with a smile,
To have squeezed the universe into a ball
To roll it toward some overwhelming question,
To say: "I am Lazarus, come from the dead,
Come back to tell you all, I shall tell you all"—
If one, settling a pillow by her head,
       Should say: "That is not what I meant at all;
That is not it, at all."

And would it have been worth it, after all,
Would it have been worth while,
After the sunsets and the dooryards and the sprinkled streets,
After the novels, after the teacups, after the skirts that trail along the
         floor—
And this, and so much more?—
It is impossible to say just what I mean!
But as if a magic lantern threw the nerves in patterns on a screen:
Would it have been worth while
If one, settling a  pillow or throwing off a shawl,
And turning toward the window, should say:
"That is not it at all,
That is not what I meant, at all."
    .    .    .    .    .    .    .    .    .
     No! I am not Prince Hamlet, nor was meant to be;
Am an attendant lord, one that will do
To swell a progress, start a scene or two,
Advise the prince; no doubt, an easy tool,
Deferential, glad to be of use,
     Politic, cautious, and meticulous;
     Full of high sentence, but a bit obtuse;
     At times, indeed, almost ridiculous—
     Almost, at times, the Fool.

I grow old... I grow old...
I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled.

Shall I part my hair behind? Do I dare to eat a peach?
I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach.
I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each.

I do not think that they will sing to me.

I have seen them riding seaward on the waves
Combing the white hair of the waves blown back
When the wind blows the water white and black.

We have lingered in the chambers of the sea
By sea-girls wreathed with seaweed red and brown
Till human voices wake us, and we drown.

Sweeney Among the Nightingales
By T. S. Eliot

       [Greek text inserted here]
     Apeneck Sweeney spreads his knees
Letting his arms hang down to laugh,
The zebra stripes along his jaw
     Swelling to maculate giraffe.

The circles of the stormy moon
Slide westward toward the River Plate,
Death and the Raven drift above
And Sweeney guards the hornèd gate.

     Gloomy Orion and the Dog
     Are veiled; and hushed the shrunken seas;
The person in the Spanish cape
Tries to sit on Sweeney's knees

Slips and pulls the table cloth
     Overturns a coffee-cup,
     Reorganized upon the floor
     She yawns and draws a stocking up;

The silent man in mocha brown
     Sprawls at the window-sill and gapes;
     The waiter brings in oranges
     Bananas figs and hothouse grapes;

     The silent vertebrate in brown
     Contracts and concentrates, withdraws;
     Rachel née Rabinovitch
     Tears at the grapes with murderous paws;

She and the lady in the cape
     Are suspect, thought to be in league;
Therefore the man with heavy eyes
     Declines the gambit, shows fatigue,

     Leaves the room and reappears
     Outside the window, leaning in,
     Branches of wisteria
     Circumscribe a golden grin;

     The host with someone indistinct
     Converses at the door apart,
     The nightingales are singing near
The Convent of the Sacred Heart,

And sang within the bloody wood
     When Agamemnon cried aloud,
And let their liquid droppings fall
To stain the stiff dishonoured shroud.

Mr. Eliot's Sunday Morning Service
By T. S. Eliot

Look, look, master, here comes two religious
       caterpillars.
                     The Jew of Malta.
     Polyphiloprogenitive
The sapient sutlers of the Lord
     Drift across the window-panes.
In the beginning was the Word.

In the beginning was the Word.
Superfetation of [Greek text inserted here],
And at the mensual turn of time
     Produced enervate Origen.

A painter of the Umbrian school
     Designed upon a gesso ground
The nimbus of the Baptized God.
The wilderness is cracked and browned

But through the water pale and thin
     Still shine the unoffending feet
And there above the painter set
     The Father and the Paraclete.
    .    .    .    .    .
     The sable presbyters approach
     The avenue of penitence;
The young are red and pustular
     Clutching piaculative pence.

     Under the penitential gates
     Sustained by staring Seraphim
Where the souls of the devout
     Burn invisible and dim.

     Along the garden-wall the bees
     With hairy bellies pass between
     The staminate and pistilate,
     Blest office of the epicene.

Sweeney shifts from ham to ham
Stirring the water in his bath.
The masters of the subtle schools
     Are controversial, polymath.

Poems and Poets / Whispers of Immortality By T.S. Eliot

Whispers of Immortality
By T.S. Eliot

Webster was much possessed by death
     And saw the skull beneath the skin;
     And breastless creatures under ground
Leaned backward with a lipless grin.

     Daffodil bulbs instead of balls
Stared from the sockets of the eyes!
He knew that thought clings round dead limbs
     Tightening its lusts and luxuries.

Donne, I suppose, was such another
     Who found no substitute for sense;
To seize and clutch and penetrate,
     Expert beyond experience,

He knew the anguish of the marrow
     The ague of the skeleton;
     No contact possible to flesh
Allayed the fever of the bone.
    .    .    .    .    .
Grishkin is nice: her Russian eye
     Is underlined for emphasis;
     Uncorseted, her friendly bust
     Gives promise of pneumatic bliss.

     The couched Brazilian jaguar
     Compels the scampering marmoset
     With subtle effluence of cat;
     Grishkin has a maisonette;

     The sleek Brazilian jaguar
Does not in its arboreal gloom
Distil so rank a feline smell
     As Grishkin in a drawing-room.

     And even the Abstract Entities
     Circumambulate her charm;
But our lot crawls between dry ribs
     To keep our metaphysics warm.

Rhapsody on a Windy Night
By T. S. Eliot

     Twelve o'clock.
Along the reaches of the street
     Held in a lunar synthesis,
     Whispering lunar incantations
     Disolve the floors of memory
     And all its clear relations,
     Its divisions and precisions,
Every street lamp that I pass
     Beats like a fatalistic drum,
And through the spaces of the dark
     Midnight shakes the memory
As a madman shakes a dead geranium.

     Half-past one,
     The street lamp sputtered,
     The street lamp muttered,
     The street lamp said,
     "Regard that woman
Who hesitates toward you in the light of the door
Which opens on her like a grin.
You see the border of her dress
Is torn and stained with sand,
And you see the corner of her eye
     Twists like a crooked pin."

The memory throws up high and dry
     A crowd of twisted things;
A twisted branch upon the beach
     Eaten smooth, and polished
As if the world gave up
     The secret of its skeleton,
     Stiff and white.
A broken spring in a factory yard,
Rust that clings to the form that the strength has left
Hard and curled and ready to snap.

     Half-past two,
     The street-lamp said,
"Remark the cat which flattens itself in the gutter,
     Slips out its tongue
And devours a morsel of rancid butter."
So the hand of the child, automatic,
Slipped out and pocketed a toy that was running along
     the quay.
I could see nothing behind that child's eye.
I have seen eyes in the street
Trying to peer through lighted shutters,
And a crab one afternoon in a pool,
An old crab with barnacles on his back,
Gripped the end of a stick which I held him.

     Half-past three,
     The lamp sputtered,
The lamp muttered in the dark.

     The lamp hummed:
     "Regard the moon,
La lune ne garde aucune rancune,
     She winks a feeble eye,
     She smiles into corners.
She smooths the hair of the grass.
The moon has lost her memory.
A washed-out smallpox cracks her face,
Her hand twists a paper rose,
That smells of dust and old Cologne,
She is alone With all the old nocturnal smells
That cross and cross across her brain.
     The reminiscence comes
     Of sunless dry geraniums
     And dust in crevices,
Smells of chestnuts in the streets
And female smells in shuttered rooms
     And cigarettes in corridors
     And cocktail smells in bars."

     The lamp said,
     "Four o'clock,
Here is the number on the door.
     Memory!
     You have the key,
The little lamp spreads a ring on the stair,
     Mount.
The bed is open; the tooth-brush hangs on the wall,
Put your shoes at the door, sleep, prepare for life."

The last twist of the knife.

Poems and Poets / Morning at the Window By T.S. Eliot

Morning at the Window
By T.S. Eliot

They are rattling breakfast plates in basement kitchens,
And along the trampled edges of the street
I am aware of the damp souls of housemaids
     Sprouting despondently at area gates.
The brown waves of fog toss up to me
Twisted faces from the bottom of the street,
And tear from a passer-by with muddy skirts
An aimless smile that hovers in the air
And vanishes along the level of the roofs.

The Boston Evening Transcript
By T.S. Eliot

The readers of the Boston Evening Transcript
Sway in the wind like a field of ripe corn.
When evening quickens faintly in the street,
Wakening the appetites of life in some
And to others bringing the Boston Evening Transcript,
I mount the steps and ring the bell, turning
Wearily, as one would turn to nod good-bye to Rochefoucauld,
If the street were time and he at the end of the street,
And I say, "Cousin Harriet, here is the Boston Evening Transcript."

Poems and Poets / Aunt Helen By T.S. Eliot

Aunt Helen
By T.S. Eliot

Miss Helen Slingsby was my maiden aunt,
And lived in a small house near a fashionable square
Cared for by servants to the number of four.
Now when she died there was silence in heaven
And silence at her end of the street.
The shutters were drawn and the undertaker wiped his feet—
He was aware that this sort of thing had occurred before.
The dogs were handsomely provided for,
But shortly afterwards the parrot died too.
The Dresden clock continued ticking on the mantelpiece,
And the footman sat upon the dining-table
Holding the second housemaid on his knees—
Who had always been so careful while her mistress lived.

Cousin Nancy
By T.S. Eliot

Miss Nancy Ellicott Strode across the hills and broke them,
Rode across the hills and broke them—
     The barren New England hills—
     Riding to hounds
     Over the cow-pasture.

     Miss Nancy Ellicott smoked
     And danced all the modern dances;
And her aunts were not quite sure how they felt about it,
But they knew that it was modern.

Upon the glazen shelves kept watch
Matthew and Waldo, guardians of the faith,
     The army of unalterable law.

Poems and Poets / Mr. Apollinax by T.S. Eliot
January 25, 2020, 03:43:04 PM
Mr. Apollinax by T.S. Eliot

When Mr. Apollinax visited the United States
His laughter tinkled among the teacups.
I thought of Fragilion, that shy figure among the birch-trees,
And of Priapus in the shrubbery
Gaping at the lady in the swing.
In the palace of Mrs. Phlaccus, at Professor Channing-Cheetah's
He laughed like an irresponsible foetus.
His laughter was submarine and profound
Like the old man of the sea's
     Hidden under coral islands
Where worried bodies of drowned men drift down in the green silence,
     Dropping from fingers of surf.
I looked for the head of Mr. Apollinax rolling under a chair
     Or grinning over a screen
     With seaweed in its hair.
I heard the beat of centaur's hoofs over the hard turf
As his dry and passionate talk devoured the afternoon.
"He is a charming man"—"But after all what did he mean?"—
"His pointed ears... He must be unbalanced,"—
"There was something he said that I might have challenged."
Of dowager Mrs. Phlaccus, and Professor and Mrs. Cheetah
I remember a slice of lemon, and a bitten macaroon.

Poems and Poets / Hysteria by T.S. Eliot

Hysteria by T.S. Eliot

As she laughed I was aware of becoming involved in her
laughter and being part of it, until her teeth were
only accidental stars with a talent for squad-drill. I
was drawn in by short gasps, inhaled at each momentary
recovery, lost finally in the dark caverns of her
throat, bruised by the ripple of unseen muscles. An
elderly waiter with trembling hands was hurriedly
spreading a pink and white checked cloth over the rusty
green iron table, saying: "If the lady and gentleman
wish to take their tea in the garden, if the lady and
gentleman wish to take their tea in the garden..." I
decided that if the shaking of her breasts could be
stopped, some of the fragments of the afternoon might
be collected, and I concentrated my attention with
     careful subtlety to this end.

Conversation Galante
By T.S. Eliot

I observe: "Our sentimental friend the moon!
     Or possibly (fantastic, I confess)
It may be Prester John's balloon
Or an old battered lantern hung aloft
To light poor travellers to their distress."
       She then: "How you digress!"

And I then: "Some one frames upon the keys
That exquisite nocturne, with which we explain
The night and moonshine; music which we seize
     To body forth our vacuity."
She then: "Does this refer to me?"
"Oh no, it is I who am inane."

"You, madam, are the eternal humorist,
The eternal enemy of the absolute,
Giving our vagrant moods the slightest twist!
With your air indifferent and imperious
At a stroke our mad poetics to confute—"
       And—"Are we then so serious?"

Poems and Poets / La Figlia Che Piange by T.S. Eliot
January 25, 2020, 03:37:45 PM
La Figlia Che Piange by T.S. Eliot

       O quam te memorem Virgo...
Stand on the highest pavement of the stair—
     Lean on a garden urn—
Weave, weave the sunlight in your hair—
Clasp your flowers to you with a pained surprise—
Fling them to the ground and turn
With a fugitive resentment in your eyes:
But weave, weave the sunlight in your hair.

So I would have had him leave,
So I would have had her stand and grieve,
     So he would have left
As the soul leaves the body torn and bruised,
As the mind deserts the body it has used.
     I should find
Some way incomparably light and deft,
Some way we both should understand,
Simple and faithless as a smile and shake of the hand.

She turned away, but with the autumn weather
     Compelled my imagination many days,
     Many days and many hours:
Her hair over her arms and her arms full of flowers.
And I wonder how they should have been together!
I should have lost a gesture and a pose.
     Sometimes these cogitations still amaze
The troubled midnight and the noon's repose.

Poems and Poets / The Hippopotamus By T.S. Eliot
January 25, 2020, 03:33:21 PM
The Hippopotamus
By T.S. Eliot

Similiter et omnes revereantur Diaconos, ut
mandatum Jesu Christi; et Episcopum, ut Jesum
       Christum, existentem filium Patris; Presbyteros
autem, ut concilium Dei et conjunctionem
Apostolorum. Sine his Ecclesia non vocatur; de
       quibus suadeo vos sic habeo.

       S. IGNATII AD TRALLIANOS.

And when this epistle is read among you, cause
that it be read also in the church of the
       Laodiceans.
     The broad-backed hippopotamus
     Rests on his belly in the mud;
Although he seems so firm to us
He is merely flesh and blood.

     Flesh-and-blood is weak and frail,
     Susceptible to nervous shock;
While the True Church can never fail
For it is based upon a rock.

The hippo's feeble steps may err
     In compassing material ends,
While the True Church need never stir
     To gather in its dividends.

     The 'potamus can never reach
     The mango on the mango-tree;
But fruits of pomegranate and peach
Refresh the Church from over sea.

At mating time the hippo's voice
     Betrays inflexions hoarse and odd,
But every week we hear rejoice
The Church, at being one with God.

     The hippopotamus's day
     Is passed in sleep; at night he hunts;
God works in a mysterious way-
The Church can sleep and feed at once.

I saw the 'potamus take wing
     Ascending from the damp savannas,
And quiring angels round him sing
The praise of God, in loud hosannas.

Blood of the Lamb shall wash him clean
And him shall heavenly arms enfold,
Among the saints he shall be seen
Performing on a harp of gold.

He shall be washed as white as snow,
By all the martyr'd virgins kiss,
While the True Church remains below
Wrapt in the old miasmal mist.

A Cooking Egg
By T.S. Eliot

En l'an trentiesme de mon aage
Que toutes mes hontes j'ay beues...
Pipit sate upright in her chair
       Some distance from where I was sitting;
     Views of the Oxford Colleges
Lay on the table, with the knitting.

     Daguerreotypes and silhouettes,
Her grandfather and great great aunts,
     Supported on the mantelpiece
       An Invitation to the Dance.
      .    .    .    .    .    .
I shall not want Honour in Heaven
For I shall meet Sir Philip Sidney
     And have talk with Coriolanus
And other heroes of that kidney.

I shall not want Capital in Heaven
For I shall meet Sir Alfred Mond:
We two shall lie together, lapt
In a five per cent Exchequer Bond.

I shall not want Society in Heaven,
       Lucretia Borgia shall be my Bride;
Her anecdotes will be more amusing
       Than Pipit's experience could provide.

I shall not want Pipit in Heaven:
       Madame Blavatsky will instruct me
     In the Seven Sacred Trances;
Piccarda de Donati will conduct me.

      .    .    .    .    .    .

But where is the penny world I bought
To eat with Pipit behind the screen?
     The red-eyed scavengers are creeping
       From Kentish Town and Golder's Green;

Where are the eagles and the trumpets?

       Buried beneath some snow-deep Alps.
     Over buttered scones and crumpets
       Weeping, weeping multitudes
     Droop in a hundred A.B.C.'s

["ABC's" signifes endemic teashops, found in all parts of
London. The initials signify "Aerated Bread Company,
     Limited."—Project Gutenberg Editor's replacement of

Poems and Poets / Sweeney ErectBy T.S. Eliot

Sweeney Erect
By T.S. Eliot

                           And the trees about me,
Let them be dry and leafless; let the rocks
Groan with continual surges; and behind me
Make all a desolation. Look, look, wenches!
Paint me a cavernous waste shore
     Cast in the unstilted Cyclades,
Paint me the bold anfractuous rocks
Faced by the snarled and yelping seas.

     Display me Aeolus above
     Reviewing the insurgent gales
     Which tangle Ariadne's hair
And swell with haste the perjured sails.

Morning stirs the feet and hands
     (Nausicaa and Polypheme),
     Gesture of orang-outang
Rises from the sheets in steam.

This withered root of knots of hair
Slitted below and gashed with eyes,
This oval O cropped out with teeth:
The sickle motion from the thighs

     Jackknifes upward at the knees
Then straightens out from heel to hip
Pushing the framework of the bed
And clawing at the pillow slip.

Sweeney addressed full length to shave
Broadbottomed, pink from nape to base,
     Knows the female temperament
And wipes the suds around his face.

(The lengthened shadow of a man
     Is history, said Emerson
Who had not seen the silhouette
Of Sweeney straddled in the sun).

Tests the razor on his leg
     Waiting until the shriek subsides.
     The epileptic on the bed
Curves backward, clutching at her sides.

     The ladies of the corridor
     Find themselves involved, disgraced,
     Call witness to their principles
And deprecate the lack of taste

     Observing that hysteria
     Might easily be misunderstood;
     Mrs. Turner intimates
It does the house no sort of good.

But Doris, towelled from the bath,
     Enters padding on broad feet,
     Bringing sal volatile
And a glass of brandy neat.

Burbank with a Baedeker: Bleistein with a Cigar
By T.S  Eliot

       Tra-la-la-la-la-la-laire—nil nisi divinum stabile
est; caetera fumus—the gondola stopped, the old
palace was there, how charming its grey and pink—
goats and monkeys, with such hair too!—so the
countess passed on until she came through the
little park, where Niobe presented her with a
       cabinet, and so departed.
     Burbank crossed a little bridge
     Descending at a small hotel;
     Princess Volupine arrived,
They were together, and he fell.

     Defunctive music under sea
Passed seaward with the passing bell
     Slowly: the God Hercules
Had left him, that had loved him well.

     The horses, under the axletree
Beat up the dawn from Istria
With even feet. Her shuttered barge
Burned on the water all the day.

But this or such was Bleistein's way:
A saggy bending of the knees
And elbows, with the palms turned out,
     Chicago Semite Viennese.

     A lustreless protrusive eye
     Stares from the protozoic slime
     At a perspective of Canaletto.
The smoky candle end of time

     Declines. On the Rialto once.
The rats are underneath the piles.
The jew is underneath the lot.
Money in furs. The boatman smiles,

     Princess Volupine extends
     A meagre, blue-nailed, phthisic hand
To climb the waterstair. Lights, lights,
     She entertains Sir Ferdinand

Klein. Who clipped the lion's wings
And flea'd his rump and pared his claws?
     Thought Burbank, meditating on
Time's ruins, and the seven laws.

Poems and Poets / Gerontion by T.S. Eliot
January 25, 2020, 03:19:09 PM
Gerontion by T. S. Eliot

Thou hast nor youth nor age
But as it were an after dinner sleep
       Dreaming of both.
Here I am, an old man in a dry month,
Being read to by a boy, waiting for rain.
I was neither at the hot gates
Nor fought in the warm rain
Nor knee deep in the salt marsh, heaving a cutlass,
     Bitten by flies, fought.
My house is a decayed house,
And the jew squats on the window sill, the owner,
Spawned in some estaminet of Antwerp,
Blistered in Brussels, patched and peeled in London.
     The goat coughs at night in the field overhead;
     Rocks, moss, stonecrop, iron, merds.
The woman keeps the kitchen, makes tea,
Sneezes at evening, poking the peevish gutter.

                       I an old man,
A dull head among windy spaces.

Signs are taken for wonders. "We would see a sign":
The word within a word, unable to speak a word,
Swaddled with darkness. In the juvescence of the year
     Came Christ the tiger

In depraved May, dogwood and chestnut, flowering Judas,
To be eaten, to be divided, to be drunk
     Among whispers; by Mr. Silvero
     With caressing hands, at Limoges
     Who walked all night in the next room;
     By Hakagawa, bowing among the Titians;
By Madame de Tornquist, in the dark room
Shifting the candles; Fraulein von Kulp
Who turned in the hall, one hand on the door. Vacant shuttles
Weave the wind. I have no ghosts,
An old man in a draughty house
     Under a windy knob.

After such knowledge, what forgiveness? Think now
History has many cunning passages, contrived corridors
And issues, deceives with whispering ambitions,
Guides us by vanities. Think now
She gives when our attention is distracted
And what she gives, gives with such supple confusions
That the giving famishes the craving. Gives too late
What's not believed in, or if still believed,
In memory only, reconsidered passion. Gives too soon
Into weak hands, what's thought can be dispensed with
Till the refusal propagates a fear. Think
Neither fear nor courage saves us. Unnatural vices
Are fathered by our heroism. Virtues
Are forced upon us by our impudent crimes.
These tears are shaken from the wrath-bearing tree.

The tiger springs in the new year. Us he devours. Think at last
We have not reached conclusion, when I
Stiffen in a rented house. Think at last
I have not made this show purposelessly
And it is not by any concitation
     Of the backward devils.
I would meet you upon this honestly.
I that was near your heart was removed therefrom
To lose beauty in terror, terror in inquisition.
I have lost my passion: why should I need to keep it
Since what is kept must be adulterated?
I have lost my sight, smell, hearing, taste and touch:
How should I use it for your closer contact?

These with a thousand small deliberations
Protract the profit of their chilled delirium,
Excite the membrane, when the sense has cooled,
     With pungent sauces, multiply variety
In a wilderness of mirrors. What will the spider do,
Suspend its operations, will the weevil
Delay? De Bailhache, Fresca, Mrs. Cammel, whirled
Beyond the circuit of the shuddering Bear
In fractured atoms. Gull against the wind, in the windy straits
Of Belle Isle, or running on the Horn,
White feathers in the snow, the Gulf claims,
And an old man driven by the Trades
     To a sleepy corner.

                       Tenants of the house,
Thoughts of a dry brain in a dry season.

Commentary: Imagineering RP in 2007
Tacloban City (December 31 2006) -- In just a few hours, as the country hopefully awaits, the country will witness the changing of the year 2006 to 2007.

It feels good, looking back at the year which is nearing its end because of the significant milestones that happened – the strong rebound of the Philippine economy from the very sick to one the growth of which is continuously on the rise, thanks to the firm determination of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and the country's leaders emboldened by the willingness of the people to sacrifice and support the thrusts.

The year which is on the verge of being a year that was, witnessed heightened national pride because of the honors brought to the country by Filipinos excelling in various endeavors from beauty tilts to sports, to the Presidents presiding over a very powerful United Nations committee.

Despite the political hullabaloos, the failed inciting of people to go to the streets to topple down the Administration, the year 2006 saw time and again, the upholding of the rule of law and the strengthening of the country's political system.

The several disasters and calamities which happened in the country in 2006, proved to be the show window of world brotherhood and cooperation and showcased the resiliency of the Filipinos, able to bounce back with dignity after every misfortune that befell them.

The year 2006 closes with the grade of good for the country—stronger peso, 9-year high stocks market, better investor confidence and more business coming in, more employment generated, continuous economic growth.

The specialists say the year 2006 could have been a better year for the Philippines. This is indeed true. There is no use dwelling on if's and but's. What the country to have a better year in 2007 as 91% hopeful Filipinos are wishing for, is the firm determination of the leaders and all the Filipinos to bring into fruition, what everybody is wishing for.

What the country needs is not re-engineering. Methinks, the country needs Imagineering, the master planning, creative development, design, engineering, production, project management, research and development of what the Filipinos aspire the country to be.

The country in 2007 needs leaders and Filipinos who are a talented corps of imagineeners who dare to dream of good things, even things which the pessimists think impossible, for the common interest of the Filipino people. But they do not stop at merely dreaming, they plan and research for ways in order to make the dreams come true. This is the secret of Walt Disney. He imagined a magical place for the children and adults alike. He however, did not stop at just imagining, he worked hard to build that dream. The result, Disneyland, the rest is history.

As the country waits for the coming in of the year 2007, let us start imagining what we want ourselves, our families, our local government units, our country to be next year and then start working towards the fulfillment of the things we have imagined.

We imagine a country where peace and prosperity prevails, where people are united, where every family enjoys the benefit of quality education and good paying jobs. As the year 2007 comes in, let us start to be a corps of imagineers, building the fruition of the things we imagine for the country and its people. (PIA 8)

Greet the new year with paper horns, pots and pans - DOH
Iloilo City (30 December 2005) -- For reasons of economics and safety, the Department of Health is recommending the use of alternative noise - makers instead of the traditional firecrackers.

To reduce firecrackers and fireworks related injuries and death, DOH launched its own formula to counter the incident. "FOURmula Kontra Paputok" was laid out by Health Secretary Francisco Duque III to heighten awareness of the public on the four ways of preventing firecrackers and fireworks related injuries and deaths during the holidays. The campaign asks the public and the local government units to find alternative means of merry making other than the use of firecrackers.

"FOURmula Kontra Paputok" advocates safe ways of making noise. It has four basic pointers that address the most common ways people injure themselves during the festivities of the holidays: 1. It is better to use pots, pans and paper horns; 2. never pick up the firecrackers that fail to explode; 3. immediately wash wounds with soap and water and go to the nearest hospital for treatment and 4. never fire guns to greet the New Year.

"People use firecrackers as noisemakers for luck, but it is definitely not lucky if you lose a limb or get hurt this season," the health chief emphasized. Further, he added that this year's campaign would focus on males aged 10-19 years and those below 10 years, which are the most affected groups.

It is better and less costly to use palangganas, torotots, pots and pans than the traditional and injury-causing firecrackers according to the Health Secretary.

Based on statistics last year, Western Visayas has 30 firecrackers and fireworks related cases third to Ilocos Region which is second with 36 cases and topped by the National Capital Region with 393 cases. Of those injured, 56% directly handled firework, 29% were onlookers, and 15% were passersby.

Last year, 50 different sentinel sites nationwide also reported 585 injuries from 21 December 2004 to 1 January 2005. These injuries were 15% lower compared to the same period in the previous year. Of the total number of injuries, 548 were due to fireworks, 33 were stray bullet cases while 4 cases of watusi ingestion.

On the use of liquor, majority (76%) of those injured was not under the influence of liquor, while only about 20% were intoxicated. Most (70%) injuries occurred on the street, 27% were sustained at home, while the rest were not indicated where injuries were sustained.

US, Philippines Start TIFA Discussion

2008 : Manila Bulletin - American companies have expressed keen interest on the government's policies on the auto sector, intellectual property rights protection, ICT and the country's opportunities in the region as both US-Philippine government's are undertaking bilateral talks on the US-Philippines Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA).

These issues were raised by senior executives from 11 American multinational corporations doing business in the region during a meeting with President Gloria Arroyo in a recent business mission led by the US-ASEAN Business Council.

"In today's global economic climate the breadth of the mission and range of sectors involved send a clear message on the continued commitment of the American business community to growth and development in the Philippines," said US-ASEAN Business Council vice-president William Marmon.

The TIFA provides the two sides with a forum to identify, raise and resolve matters that might otherwise hinder the development of bilateral trade and investment ties.

The TIFA also provides a framework for the future negotiations of a bilateral free trade agreement.

To date, Brunei, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand have signed a TIFA with the United States, leaving Malaysia as the only major ASEAN country not to have signed a TIFA.

By design, TIFA discussions are wide-ranging and provide an important foundation of common understanding and objectives for formal negotiation of a bilateral FTA with the United States.

It was unclear though if the Philippines would insist on its earlier proposal for a preferential trade arrangement with the US on its garment exports in the upcoming TIFA review.

The private garment sector had pushed for a free trade agreement on garment initially but this was rejected by the Bush administration in favor of a comprehensive FTA scheme.

The Philippine delegation to the TIFA review also included officials from the Confederation of Garment Exporters of the Philippines.

The most significant recent memorandum of understanding signed by the U.S. and the Philippines under the ambit of the TIFA was in September 2006 when both parties agreed to cooperate on stopping illegal transshipments of textiles and apparel through the Philippines to the United States.

The recent US-business mission provided a timely opportunity for American executives to engage government and business leaders on a number of issues affecting the local business climate and global competitiveness of the Philippines, Marmon said.

2014 by Manila Bulletin
US President Barack Obama's arrival in the Philippines in April should lend fresh impetus to faltering talks over the deployment of American military forces to Subic Bay, a strategic location overlooking the disputed West Philippine Sea (South China Sea).

The bilateral discussions began this past August, but are understood to have stalled over the status of new "temporary" facilities, which would house visiting US forces without contravening a Philippine constitutional ban on permanent foreign military bases in the country.

The latest, fifth round of talks on a proposed "framework agreement" on bilateral security ended on Jan. 31 without resolution, the US embassy in Manila said.

Manila will be Obama's fourth and final stop on his coming regional tour, the White House confirmed on Feb. 12, after Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia.

The slow progress of the talks with the Philippine government - an ally under the terms of a 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty - has come as a surprise, given that the two sides share the same end goal, namely the stationing of more US forces in the Philippines.

*Rebalancing To Asia-Pacific

The Philippines is embroiled in a dispute with China over islands in the West Philippine Sea, and wants to increase the US' involvement in its security affairs, given China's military superiority over the Philippines' own, largely obsolete armed forces. The US, also with an eye on China, wants to make greater use of military bases in the Philippines as it implements a policy of "rebalancing" to the Asian-Pacific region.

The US embassy in Manila declined to comment on the substance of the continuing talks, while the Philippine Department of National Defense said it would publish details of the latest round of negotiations in due course.

However, the timing of President Obama's visit to the Philippines will prove fortuitous if it helps to resolve the impasse - or awkward, if it fails to jump-start the negotiations and produce the long-awaited deal.

"The sticking point is control," explained Ramon Casiple, executive director of the Institute of Political and Electoral Reform in Manila. "The US side is insisting on complete control over [any new facilities], and the Philippines is reluctant because of constitutional reasons. It's a question of symbolism, rather than substance."

Subic Bay was formerly one of the US military's most important naval stations in Asia, until the Philippines approved a new Constitution in 1987 that made the stationing of foreign military forces in the country illegal. As a result, the US military left Subic - and the Philippines - in 1992.

A 1998 Visiting Forces Agreement subsequently gave permission for US forces to return, provided they were only "temporarily in the Philippines.

Poems and Poets / Love's Lament by Heinrich Heine

Love's Lament by Heinrich Heine

On night's secrecy relying,
Silently I breathe my woes;
From the haunts of mortals flying,
Where the cup of pleasure flows.
Down my cheeks run tears all burning,
Silently, unceasingly;
But my bosom's fiery yearning
Quench'ed by tears can never be.{2}
When a laughing urchin, gaily
Many a merry game I play'd;
In life's sunshine basking daily,
Knowing nought of grief or shade.
For a garden of enjoyment
Was the world I then lived in,
Tending flowers my sole employment,
Roses, violets, jessamine.
By the brook's side, on the meadow,
Sweetly mused I in those days;
Now I see a pale thin shadow,
When upon the brook I gaze.
Pale and thin my grief hath made me,
Since mine eyes upon her fell;
Secret sorrows now pervade me,
Wonderful and hard to tell.
Deep within my heart I cherish'd
Angel forms of peace and love,
Which have fled, their short joys perish'd,
To their starry home above.
Ghastly shadows rise unbidden,
Black night round mine eyes is thrown;
In my trembling breast is hidden
A sad whisp'ring voice unknown.
Unknown sorrows, unknown anguish
Toss me wildly to and fro,
And I pine away and languish,
Tortured by an unknown glow.
But the cause why I am lying
Rack'd by fiery torments now,—
Why from very grief I'm dying,—
Love, behold!—The cause art thou!

Love's Salutation by Heinrich Heine

Darling maiden, who can be
Ever found to equal thee?
To thy service joyfully
Shall my life be pledged by me.
Thy sweet eyes gleam tenderly,
Like soft moonbeams o'er the sea;
Lights of rosy harmony
O'er thy red cheeks wander free.
From thy small mouth, full of glee,
Rows of pearls peep charmingly;
But thy bosom's drapery
Veils thy fairest jewelry.
Pure love only could it be
That so sweetly thrill'd through me,
When I whilome gazed on thee,
Darling maid, so fair to see.

Poems and Poets / The Black Hen by A. K. Maranujan
January 24, 2020, 02:05:05 PM
It must come as leaves
to a tree
or not at all

yet it comes sometimes
as the black hen
with the red round eye

on the embroidery
stitch by stitch
dropped and found again

and when it's all there
the black hen stares
with its round red eye

and you're afraid.

bread,
lettuce and salami,
all carrying the shape
of her bite.

Lord of new arrivals
lovers and rivals:
arrive
at once with cockfight and banner—
dance till on this and the next three
hills

women's hands and the garlands
on the chests of men will turn like
chariotwheels

O where are the cockscombs and where
the beaks glinting with new knives
at crossroads

when will orange banners burn
among blue trumpet flowers and the shade
of trees

waiting for lightnings?

2

Twelve etched arrowheads
for eyes and six unforeseen
faces, and you were not
embarrassed.

Unlike other gods
you find work
for every face,
and made
eyes at only one
woman. And your arms
are like faces with proper
names.

3

Lord of green
growing things, give us
a hand

in our fight
with the fruit fly.
Tell us,

will the red flower ever
come to the branches
of the blueprint

city?

4

Lord of great changes and small
cells: exchange our painted grey
pottery

for iron copper the leap of stone horses
our yellow grass and lily seed
for rams!

flesh and scarlet rice for the carnivals
on rivers O dawn of nightmare virgins
bring us

your white-haired witches who wear
three colours even in sleep.

5

Lord of the spoor of the tigress,
outside our town hyenas
and civet cats live
on the kills of leopards
and tigers

too weak to finish what's begun.
Rajahs stand in photographs
over ninefoot silken tigresses
that sycophants have shot.
Sleeping under country fans

hearts are worm cans
turning over continually
for the great shadows
of fish in the open
waters.

We eat legends and leavings,
remember the ivory, the apes,
the peacocks we sent in the Bible
to Solomon, the medicines for smallpox,
the similes

for muslin: wavering snakeskins,
a cloud of steam
Ever-rehearsing astronauts,
we purify and return
our urine
to the circling body
and burn our faeces
for fuel to reach the moon
through the sky behind
the navel.

6

Master of red bloodstains,
our blood is brown;
our collars white.

Other lives and sixty-
four rumoured arts
tingle,

pins and needles
at amputees' fingertips
in phantom muscle

7

Lord of the twelve right hands
why are we your mirror men
with the two left hands

capable only of casting
reflections? Lord
of faces,

find us the face
we lost early
this morning.

8

Lord of headlines,
help us read
the small print.

Lord of the sixth sense,
give us back
our five senses.

Lord of solutions,
teach us to dissolve
and not to drown.

9

Deliver us O presence
from proxies
and absences

from sanskrit and the mythologies
of night and the several
roundtable mornings

of London and return
the future to what
it was.

10

Lord, return us.
Brings us back
to a litter

of six new pigs in a slum
and a sudden quarter
of harvest

Lord of the last-born
give us
birth.

11

Lord of lost travellers,
find us. Hunt us
down.

Lord of answers,
cure us at once
of prayers.

Poems and Poets / Extended Family by A. K. Ramanujan
January 24, 2020, 01:55:46 PM
Yet like grandfather
I bathe before the village crow

the dry chlorine water
my only Ganges

the naked Chicago bulb
a cousin of the Vedic sun

slap soap on my back
like father

and think
in proverbs

like me
I wipe myself dry

with an unwashed
Sears turkish towel

like mother
I hear faint morning song

(though here it sounds
Japanese)

and three clear strings
nextdoor

through kitchen
clatter

like my little daughter
I play shy

hand over crotch
my body not yet full

of thoughts novels
and children

I hold my peepee
like my little son

play garden hose
in and out
the bathtub

like my grandson
I look up

unborn
at myself

like my great
great-grandson

I am not yet
may never be

my future
dependent

on several
people

yet
to come

Composed as I am, like others,
of elements on certain well-known lists,
father's seed and mother's egg

gathering earth, air, fire, mostly
water, into a mulberry mass,
moulding calcium,

carbon, even gold, magnesium and such,
into a chattering self tangled
in love and work,

scary dreams, capable of eyes that can see,
only by moving constantly,
the constancy of things

like Stonehenge or cherry trees;

add uncle's eleven fingers
making shadow-plays of rajas
and cats, hissing,

becoming fingers again, the look
of panic on sister's face
an hour before

her wedding, a dated newspaper map,
of a place one has never seen, maybe
no longer there

after the riots, downtown Nairobi,
that a friend carried in his passport
as others would

a woman's picture in their wallets;

add the lepers of Madurai,
male, female, married,
with children,

lion faces, crabs for claws,
clotted on their shadows
under the stone-eyed

goddesses of dance, mere pillars,
moving as nothing on earth
can move &mdash

I pass through them
as they pass through me
taking and leaving

affections, seeds, skeletons,

millennia of fossil records
of insects that do not last
a day,

body-prints of mayflies,
a legend half-heard
in a train

of the half-man searching
for an ever-fleeing
other half

through Muharram tigers,
hyacinths in crocodile waters,
and the sweet

twisted lives of epileptic saints,

and even as I add
I lose, decompose,
into my elements

into other names and forms,
past, and passing, tenses
without time,

caterpillar on a leaf, eating,
being eaten.

Poems and Poets / Chicago Zen by A.K. Ramanujan
January 24, 2020, 01:50:55 PM
I

Now tidy your house,
dust especially your living room
and do not forget to name
all your children.

II

Watch your step. Sight may strike you
blind in unexpected places.

The traffic light turns orange
on 57th and Dorchester, and you stumble,

you fall into a vision of forest fires,
enter a frothing Himalayan river,

rapid, silent.

On the 14th floor,
Lake Michigan crawls and crawls

in the window. Your thumbnail
cracks a lobster louse on the windowpane

from your daughter's hair
and you drown, eyes open,

towards the Indies, the antipodes.
And you, always so perfectly sane.

III

Now you know what you always knew:
the country cannot be reached

by jet. Nor by boat on jungle river,
hashish behind the Monkey-temple,

nor moonshot to the cratered Sea
of Tranquillity, slim circus girls

on a tightrope between tree and tree
with white parasols, or the one

and only blue guitar.

Nor by any
other means of transport,

migrating with a clean valid passport,
no, not even by transmigrating

without any passport at all,
but only by answering ordinary

black telephones, questions
walls and small children ask,

and answering all calls of nature.

IV

Watch your step, watch it, I say,
especially at the first high
threshold,

and the sudden low
one near the end
of the flight
of stairs,

and watch
for the last
step that's never there.

Poems and Poets / Astronomer by A.K. Ramanujan
January 24, 2020, 01:48:47 PM
Sky-man in a manhole
with astronomy for dream,
astrology for nightmare;

fat man full of proverbs,
the language of lean years,
living in square after

almanac square
prefiguring the day
of windfall and landslide

through a calculus
of good hours,
clutching at the tear

in his birthday shirt
as at a hole
in his mildewed horoscope,

squinting at the parallax
of black planets,
his Tiger, his Hare

moving in Sanskrit zodiacs,
forever troubled
by the fractions, the kidneys

in his Tamil flesh,
his body the Great Bear
dipping for the honey,

the woman-smell
in the small curly hair
down there.

Poems and Poets / A River by A. K. Ramanujan
January 24, 2020, 01:47:06 PM
In Madurai,
city of temples and poets,
who sang of cities and temples,
every summer
a river dries to a trickle
in the sand,
baring the sand ribs,
straw and women's hair
clogging the watergates
at the rusty bars
under the bridges with patches
of repair all over them
the wet stones glistening like sleepy
crocodiles, the dry ones
shaven water-buffaloes lounging in the sun
The poets only sang of the floods.

He was there for a day
when they had the floods.
People everywhere talked
of the inches rising,
of the precise number of cobbled steps
run over by the water, rising
on the bathing places,
and the way it carried off three village houses,
one pregnant woman
and a couple of cows
named Gopi and Brinda as usual.

The new poets still quoted
the old poets, but no one spoke
in verse
of the pregnant woman
drowned, with perhaps twins in her,
kicking at blank walls
even before birth.

He said:
the river has water enough
to be poetic
about only once a year
and then
it carries away
in the first half-hour
three village houses,
a couple of cows
named Gopi and Brinda
and one pregnant woman
expecting identical twins
with no moles on their bodies,
with different coloured diapers
to tell them apart.

SOME CHINA CORONAVIRUS VICTIMS DIDN'T EVEN HAVE A FEVER
Bloomberg/ 23 January 2020

(Bloomberg) -- Several people who've died from a new virus in China didn't display symptoms of fever, potentially complicating global efforts to check for infected travelers as they arrive at airports and other travel hubs.

Details released by China's National Health Commission show five of the 17 people who died after being infected with novel coronavirus displayed other symptoms such as breathing difficulty, chest tightness and coughing.

The joint-oldest victim, an 89-year-old male, was suffering from drowsiness and incontinence, as well as a fever. He sought medical help on Jan. 5 and died on Jan. 18. He had pre-existing conditions, including hypertension.

The absence of fever in some cases indicates that temperature screening, the most common measure being used at transport links and airports to check travelers, may not identify some infected people.

China has banned travel from Wuhan, the epicenter of the virus, essentially putting the capital of central China's Hubei province -- with a population of 11 million people -- under lockdown.

The virus has already spread to other parts of the country and elsewhere, including the U.S. and Hong Kong, triggering memories of the SARS pandemic in 2003 that killed nearly 800 people.

Hong Kong on Thursday suspended high-speed rail ticket sales to Wuhan, nearly 600 miles away, according to Radio Television Hong Kong.

Macau's government canceled Lunar New Year festivities.

The holidays begin in earnest tomorrow, heaping pressure on Chinese authorities trying to contain the virus as hundreds of millions of people travel to their hometowns in the biggest migration of humans on the planet.

Philippine Provinces / Tricycle in Palawan
January 24, 2020, 02:19:21 AM
Official Statement from the Office of City Councilor Elgin Damasco
Sangguniang Panlungsod

'' TRICYCLE OPERATION SHOULD ONLY BE CONFINED ALONG CITY OR MUNICIPAL ROADS, NOT ON NATIONAL ROADS AND IS LIMITED ONLY TO ROUTES NOT TRAVERSED BY HIGHER MODE OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT. HOWEVER, THE LOCAL SANGGUNIAN
MAY ALLOW IF THERE IS NO ALTERNATIVE ROUTE. ''

ELGIN ROBERT L. DAMASCO
City Councilor/Public Servant

Chairman
Committee on Transportation

SAN RAFAEL, CALIF. (PRWEB) JANUARY 22, 2020

Last summer was the first year running Nike Volleyball Camp at Champions Hall, a state-of-the-art facility that proved to be very popular, attracting over 50 campers for the one session of camp offered. Starting this summer, there will be two weeks of an All Skills programs and two serving clinics offered in June and July.

Long-time camp director, Stephen McCarthy, is set to run all of the camp sessions. McCarthy directed last summer's successful program, helping players of all ability levels work on the fundamentals through fun instruction.

When asked about her daughter's first volleyball camp experience, Tim C. exclaimed, "This was Sophia's first introduction to the sport, and it was absolutely perfect. She had a great time and mentioned that the staff was so understanding and helpful."

The new additions will give more players, like Sophia, an opportunity to work on volleyball fundamentals in a positive and encouraging environment. During the All Skills program, campers will train with their fellow athletes on all aspects of passing, hitting, setting, and blocking. Here they will get a break down of the mechanics through various drills and competitive play. The half-day serving clinic will focus solely on the techniques and tactics of serving. Players new to the sport will learn the basic fundamentals of serving, while more advanced players may focus on float jump, and topspin serves.

These volleyball programs are designed to be attending one after the other, with the All Skills running Monday-Thursday, and the half-day Serving Clinic running Friday. This is designed to give players the opportunity to maximize their training time on the court.

Players, Coaches, and Parents interested in the program can visit Nike Volleyball Camps at http://www.ussportscamps.com/volleyball or call 1-800-645-3226.

SAN RAFAEL, CALIF. (PRWEB) JANUARY 22, 2020

The Trinity College Nike Swim Camp is designed for competitive swimmers ages 8-18 looking to improve on the "little things" that will make you a better swimmer.

Campers will experience small-group instruction in a low swimmer-to-coach ratio environment including two water sessions, daily video analysis of strokes and classroom lectures. Team building and leadership development will also play a central part of our curriculum.

The Comprehensive Stroke Camp, lead by Head Swimming Coach, Carlos Vega, offers a balanced curriculum built around training, technique, and race strategy to improve each of the four strokes.

Overnight campers reside in campus housing located a short walk from the pool and eat all meals in the campus dining hall.

"We are thrilled to work with Coach Vega at Trinity this summer," says Paul Merrion, VP of Nike Swim Camps. "He is such a dedicated and knowledgeable coach and knows how to coach swimmers at every skill level."

This summer, Trinity College is offering one session of day camp 9:00am-4:30pm for ages 8-18 June 22-25. This summer camp for competitive swimmers is an excellent format for campers to learn new drills, refine stroke technique, and focus on racing skills that will impact their swimming. Athletes will be challenged and engaged in a safe and supportive camp environment. Experienced coaching staff strive to make the week a fun and memorable experience for everyone.

"While improving swimming performance is our number one goal at camp, providing a positive and nurturing environment is also a top priority," says camp director Carlos Vega. "We want each swimmer to leave camp a better swimmer than when they came and to instill a life long joy in the sport of swimming."

Swimmers, coaches, and parents interested in Nike Swim Camps can visit http://www.ussportscamps.com/swim or call 1-800-645-3266.

Plataine Inc., a leading provider of Industrial IoT (IIoT) and AI-based software for Advanced Manufacturing Optimization, has announced today that it has been granted a United States Patent #10310492B2 titled "Multi-dimensional resource optimization in the manufacture of three-dimensional elements".

Plataine's new patent presents a digital method for production floor optimization and efficiency for manufacturers producing three-dimensional (3D) products by cutting a 3D block of material.

Digitizing and Optimizing the decision-making workflow where manufacturing 3D elements are complex, as the various shaped pieces may theoretically be placed in any three-dimensional orientation imaginable. The new patent leads to higher material utilization, increases throughput, and reduces operational costs. It enables automated optimization of resources used in the manufacturing of three-dimensional elements (including odd shapes and remnants), by generating an automated production plan that concurrently accounts for the range of available resources and makes optimal use of them based on the manufacturers' goals and constraints.

"We're excited to receive, once again, recognition by the US Patent and Trademark Office, for our innovation. We will continue to pursue our goal to create the most advanced Industrial IoT software available, as well as to protect its value with registered patents," said Avner Ben-Bassat, President & CEO at Plataine. "Manufacturers understand the immense opportunities that AI & IIoT hold for production efficiency and improved on-time, on-quality delivery. Plataine is proud to be at the cutting-edge of the process that turns production facilities into smart digital factories," Ben-Bassat adds.

#10274
TIJUANA, BAJA CALIFORNIA (PRWEB) JANUARY 22, 2020

Dr. Mario Almanza knows how effective weight loss surgeries like gastric sleeve and gastric lap band can be for reducing food intake, enabling sustainable weight loss and improving patient health in the long-term.

But Dr. Almanza also understands that while bariatric surgery may be a great tool for achieving significant weight loss, it also requires a bit of preparation—both mentally and physically—to maximize its potential, both in terms of getting results in the short-term and ensuring it can provide benefits to your health and happiness down the road.

To optimize your results and create the best opportunity for an easier post-op transition, Dr. Mario Almanza and his team offer a number of helpful pre-op preparation tips, including:

1. Get to know why you eat the way you do. In the weeks and months ahead of weight loss surgery, it's crucial to study what you eat and why you eat the way you do. As Dr. Almanza knows, surgery may change how much you eat at a given meal, but without understanding the reasons you eat (other than hunger)—including common triggers like emotion, habit, stress and boredom—managing how you eat to keep the weight off will largely remain a challenge.

2. Learn new outlets for coping with stress. Stress is often one of the biggest reasons people engage in overeating. Dr. Mario Almanza recommends learning different, non-food-related methods for processing and releasing stress to avoid this trigger, and to begin practicing these methods well before your trip to the operating room.

3. Avoid comparing yourself to others. Everyone's story is different when it comes to overcoming obesity. Dr. Almanza suggests ignoring the noise and recognizing that your story is unique, making comparisons to others unnecessary to your specific situation. Focus on what you can control and do to maximize your opportunity for successful weight loss.

4. Develop and stick to a schedule for eating. Well before your surgery, Dr. Mario Almanza recommends developing a smaller meal schedule and sticking to it. Consuming smaller meals every 3-to-4 hours each day is not only a good habit to get into, but can also help you prepare for any necessary dietary restrictions you'll need to adhere to post operation.

5. Track, measure and repeat. As Dr. Almanza knows, holding yourself accountable requires self-discipline. And the only way to really hold yourself to eating and weight loss goals before and after surgery is to measure your food intake and track your progress consistently. Doing so ensures you stay focused on healthy eating habits and on track toward the body and health you were after in the first place.

About: Dr. Mario Almanza is a weight loss surgeon and bariatric surgery specialist based in Tijuana, Baja California. To date, Dr. Almanza and his staff have successfully completed more than 16,000 weight loss surgeries for patients around the globe.

"Emergency Reporting is a lot more than just NFIRS reporting, and a Regional Training Academy is the perfect opportunity to take a deep dive into the system and discover all it has to offer," said ER Training Lead Mark McKleroy. "By the end of the event, we consider our attendees to be ER experts who can then take the knowledge they've gained back to the station and share it with the rest of their crew."

According to RTA attendee Ronald Boensch, "The most valuable aspect of this conference was the face-to-face interaction between the trainers and the conference members. I appreciate that Emergency Reporting really seems to care about the customer."

During the event, ER trainers will cover a variety of lessons on the system, starting with the essentials. They'll give a concise overview of the platform with a focus on best practices, as well as the key features in each module that's included in ER's records management software. After the essentials are covered, they'll dive further into the system. There's also an opportunity for attendees to contribute feedback to the ER product design team, who will consider all feedback during the development process.

In addition to the regular RTAs being held across the country this year, ER is introducing a new type of training event in June: an RTA specifically intended for ER Ultra Secure users only. The ER Ultra Secure product provides enhanced security within the Microsoft Azure Government environment for federal customers such as the United States Army and the Department of Defense.

For RTA tickets or more information, visit ER's Eventbrite page.

Emergency Reporting is invested in helping first responders stay current on changing technologies and data management needs by hosting training events and providing additional training and educational resources such as free white papers, case studies, and webinars.

Cebu Pacific expands Bohol-Panglao route network

15 December 2018 – Cebu Pacific (PSE: CEB), the leading carrier in the Philippines, begins commercial operation of its daily flight between its hub at the Clark International Airport in Pampanga and the Bohol-Panglao International Airport. The route is expected to stimulate domestic tourism between the Visayas, Central Luzon and Northern Luzon; as well as provide support for the growing Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism sub-industry.

The daily Flight 5J 613, bound for Tagbilaran (Panglao), is scheduled to depart Clark at 955am and arrive at 1120am. The return flight, 5J 614, is set to depart Bohol at 1150am, and arrive Clark at 115pm. The flights are operated out of the Bohol-Panglao International Airport.

"We are excited to commence operation of our newest route in Bohol. As we expand our fleet and our route network, we look forward to supporting economic growth in the province of Bohol through tourism and logistics support," said Dindo Fernando, Director for Airport Services at Cebu Pacific.

"As a native Boholanon, I am proud to be part of a team that has contributed and will continue to be a part of the development of our province. We offer Boholanons an alternative option to visit the wonderful attractions in Central and Northern Philippines that once had been a challenge for many of us to do."

CEB has been mounting flights to and from Bohol—initially from the Tagbilaran Airport--since 2004. Over the past 18 years, Cebu Pacific, together with subsidiary Cebgo, has flown close to three million passengers across thousands of flights to and from Manila, Cagayan de Oro (Laguindingan) and Davao.

Cebu Pacific has maintained leadership in the domestic market—having flown over 11.1 million passengers across 37 destinations, 76 routes and over 2,130 weekly flights from January to September 2018.

CEB also flies to 26 international destinations, with over 32 routes spanning Asia, Australia, the Middle East, and USA. Aside from its Clark hub, Cebu Pacific operates flights out of five other strategically placed hubs in the Philippines: Manila, Kalibo, Iloilo, Cebu and Cagayan de Oro (Laguindingan) and Davao.

About Cebu Air Inc. (PSE: CEB)

Cebu Air, operating as Cebu Pacific and subsidiary Cebgo, is the largest carrier in the Philippine air transportation industry, offering its low-cost services to more destinations and routes with higher flight frequency within the Philippines than any other airline.

Cebu Pacific has achieved full compliance with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Operational Safety Audit (IOSA)—considered as the accreditation with the highest standards for safety in the airline industry, joining a roster of 429 airlines worldwide that have strictly complied with the most stringent of international standards governing aviation safety.

MGA BUS, I-DEPLOY ARON MAGHATOD OG MGA TEACHERS GIKAN DOWNTOWN PAINGON MARILOG, DAVAO CITY

The Davao City government will deploy two buses donated by the city's sister city Nanning of the People's Republic of China - one to shuttle public school teachers to and from the downtown area to Marilog and the second for tourism purposes.

The deployment of one bus for teachers assigned in the Marilog District will ease their travel. The teachers had been facing difficulty in traveling to Marilog due to a lack of public transport plying the area.

April Marie Dayap, the head of the Davao City Investment and Promotion Center (DCIPC), said the two buses, which arrived on Monday, are part of the good gesture of Nanning, the capital of Guangxi Province in Southern China.

"One of the buses will be used to shuttle the teachers who are assigned in Marilog while the other one will be used for tourism and investment purposes," she said.

Dayap said the other bus will serve as transport for visiting foreign investors who would like to explore Davao City.

She said that the buses symbolize the strong relationship and friendship between the two cities. Davao City and Nanning are sister cities since 2007.

"This is a manifestation of the help that they want to extend to Davao City but not just buses because they also offer scholarships for Dabawenyos in Nanning," she said.

The two buses were first promised by Nanning officials during the visit of Mayor Inday Sara Duterte in May 2017.

According to Dayap, buses will have "byaheng do30" logo which symbolizes the 30 priority agenda of Mayor Inday for Davao City.

Philippine Daily News / TAAL VOLCANO BULLETIN
January 20, 2020, 01:15:06 PM
TAAL VOLCANO BULLETIN
20 January 2020
8:00 A.M.

Activity in the Main Crater in the past 24 hours has been characterized by steady steam emission and infrequent weak explosions that generated ash plumes 500 to 1000 meters tall and dispersed ash southwest of the Main Crater. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission was measured at an average of 4353 tonnes/day.

The Philippine Seismic Network (PSN) plotted a total of seven hundred fourteen (714) volcanic earthquakes since 1:00 PM, January 12, 2020. One hundred seventy-six (176) of these registered at magnitudes M1.2 – M4.1 and were felt at Intensities I – V. Since 5:00 AM on January 19, 2020 until 6:00 AM today, there were twenty-three (23) volcanic earthquakes plotted, registered at magnitudes M1.2-M3.8 with one (1) felt event at intensity I.

For the past 24 hours, the Taal Volcano Network, which can record small earthquakes undetectable by the PSN, recorded six hundred seventy-three  (673) volcanic earthquakes including twelve (12) low-frequency earthquakes. Such intense seismic activity likely signifies continuous magmatic intrusion beneath the Taal edifice, which may lead to further eruptive activity.

Alert Level 4 still remains in effect over Taal Volcano. This means that hazardous explosive eruption is possible within hours to days. DOST-PHIVOLCS strongly reiterates total evacuation of Taal Volcano Island and high-risk areas as identified in the hazard maps within the 14-km radius from Taal Main Crater and along the Pansipit River Valley where fissuring has been observed. Based on PAGASA wind forecast, if the eruption plume remains below three (3) km, ash will be drifted to west and southwest of the Main Crater; if the eruption plume rises between three (3) to five (5) km ash will also be drifted to parts of Cavite province; however, if a major eruption occurs during the day and the eruption column exceeds 5 km, ash will also be drifted over Metro Manila, Laguna, and some parts of Rizal and Northern Quezon. Residents around the volcano are advised to guard against the effects of heavy and prolonged ashfall. Civil aviation authorities must advise pilots to avoid the airspace around Taal Volcano as airborne ash and ballistic fragments from the eruption column pose hazards to aircraft. DOST-PHIVOLCS is continually monitoring the eruption and will update all stakeholders of further developments.

Fil-Am groups welcome Mindanao Farmers products in US market

DAVAO CITY - Mindanao products will now have the opportunity to penetrate the US market, particularly the Filipino-American communities in Los Angeles, California.

This followed after Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) Secretary Emmanuel Piñol met with the officials and representatives of the Davao Association USA (DAUSA) and Filipino-American Communities in Los Angeles (FACLA) on Thursday (January 16).

It is a follow through of the Mindanao Business Mission to California, USA last December 2019 where initial talks on marketing Mindanao's products happened between MinDA, DAUSA, and FACLA.

"We have to take advantage of this huge market in LA to promote and sell our Mindanao products," said Pińol.

DAUSA and FACLA President Fernandico Gonong Jr. told the Secretary that LA is composed of about 500 Fil-Am associations.

"We have the largest concentration of Filipinos in US and this "bayanihan" or networking for Mindanao products is really promising," Gonong added.

He further added, "for a better linkage of market products such as frozen bangus and coconut-based commodities, we need to establish a strong e-business platform in addition to the house-to-house delivery."

As a response, Piñol said they will also explore frozen bangus, durian, and tablea to be shipped in bulk containers.

He then instructed his International Relations and Investment Promotions team to begin doing necessary preparations for this initiative.

"We have to identify potential MinDA Coordinating Officers based in LA who are willing to represent the interest of Mindanao, as well as to promote our products in various trade and business activities there," Piñol emphasized.

MinDA International Relations Chief Jonathan Miral said they will coordinate the partnership to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) as soon as possible.

On the other hand, MinDA initially identified Ben Lao of Bansalan who is known for his USDA-accredited products to be the pilot provider of products to be marketed in LA. #

PIA DAVAO DEL NORTE, (17Jan)--- Five marketing staff of Singapore-based of Procter&Gamble visited this week the LGU Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) as their attention was attracted with the implementation of "BASURESIKLO: Gasa ni Kuya, Baylo sa Basura".

PENRO head Romulo Tagalo explained that their interest could be driven by the concept of extended producers responsibility (EPR) of attending  waste materials. He said they were asking about the "end-stage" items of P&G products gathered as a result of "Basurisiklo" implementation.

Tagalo viewed the Singapore-based P&G as measure of the extent of information about the waste recycling program of PLGU Davao del Norte. (PIA/JDAbangan)

MANILA -- The Philippine Bamboo Industry Council (PBIC) is looking into converting at least 19,000 hectares of land nationwide into bamboo plantation this year, the Department of Trade and Industry (DIT) said on Wednesday.

Largest land conversion will be in Region 6 (Western Visayas) with 13,000 hectares of land eyed for bamboo plantation.

In a statement, DTI Secretary and PBIC chairman Ramon Lopez met the Council last Jan.9, committing assistance to the local bamboo industry.

Lopez said he plans to have "plant-to-market" roads to ease the delivery of bamboo from the plantation to buyers. This kind of infrastructure will be a big help particularly in remote areas.

He said this would be possible through DTI's Roads Leveraging Linkages of Industry and Trade (ROLL-IT) Program with the Department of Public Works and Highways.

The DTI can also assist those who wish to venture into bamboo processing through the Shared Service Facilities Program, he added.

The government likewise provides tax incentives to agri-business ventures, including bamboo production and processing under Board of Investments' Investment Priorities Plan.

"Bamboo planting can provide a sustainable source of livelihood to people in the countryside. Since the plant grows quickly and is weather-resilient, it is an ideal business for farmers who are looking for alternative sources of income," Lopez said.

Meanwhile, PBIC will launch in March its official campaign "5K: Kawayan, Kalinisan, Kabuhayan, Kaunlaran Kinabukasan" to promote the bamboo industry. (PNA)
