It depends, Bem. Dan Kyu is a level of Dan. In Soo Bak Do, the martial art form that my brothers are enrolled in, a Dan is the rank of Red Belt. There are different degrees of Dan; ranging in stripes, the highest is the 15th stripes Dan. Once you pass the examinations after Dan, one will be given a black belt.
But in Soo Bak Do (a defensive martial art form; as compared to Tae Kwan Do--an offensive form), there are degrees of Black Belt. There are over 10 levels of Black Belt. The highest rank is the rank of Master, which takes years to achieve.
The Black Belter is higher than the Dan Kyu. But being higher in terms of rank doesn't always translate as ability. I've seen my brother Don spar with a black belter of the same age. Don Rico, who is a 5th stripe Dan, was able to take down a black belter. One thing that I am impressed by Don Rico is his ferocious stance; he is offensive based. And barrages his opponent until their defensive capability is weakened and exhausted. He takes them down with his classic double side round house kick and a mid-level round house kick. Mao jud na iyang signature take down; the roundhouse kick combo.
