Our parents always tell us, Beth, "Studies before play". My father always told us, "Money can go away, pride can go away, wealth can come and go, however the power of the mind is your own. Knowledge is powerfully yours and can never be taken away. So study hard, work hard, and you will defeat the odds. If your parents can do it, surely my children surmount."
That always resounds in my mind. Each passing day.
When I was only a little boy, my father would already help me review mathematics and read advanced books. However, my skills are sub par as compared to my siblings. My little brothers and sister have my dad's love of linear algebra, calculus and natural mathematical intuition. Math comes so easily for them. Our parents always placed an importance on studies and placed all of us in rigid and strict rules that focused on studies before friends.
Our parents do not give out compliments so easily, Beth. To them, a 90% on an examination is not good enough; and is very psychological for us. It only invigorates us to strive harder. When our parents do give out compliments, it is an indescribable feeling of joy.
Like getting a toy one so badly wanted. lol
Are you parents the same way?
