MAMMA MIA: The Custody Battle Royale
who wants a stray beadle, a puppy of unknown breed? ("mixed breed" i believe is the metaphor for "street dogs".) everybody, it seems.
jeremy tells me that he's stuck in the middle. he saw me grieve, he said, but his grandfather has been shouting to the neighborhood to have everything done for him to have mamma mia.
i work in a resort hotel and mamma mia can have all the food he wants, i'll have her registered, vaccinated and spayed, there's only my grandfather and me and he is alone when i report for work and he really wants the puppy, all the works. jeremy said it all.
the banana republic pipes in to say that i haven't figured out what would happen if by chance mamma mia's original owner came to claim her. now that's a real dose of cold water.
mamma mia is yours and your grandfather's, i finally said, scared of the thought of the original owner whom i do not know coming to our place to claim her, in case. jeremy's place, i figured, would be the last place the original owner would consider if ever he looks for his lost puppy.
i'll be looking for a home for her eventually, anyway. what else could i ask for now that she has a permanent home where she could be very well cared for? but as long as i am here, i want visiting rights, i mean, mamma mia visits with us at least two days a week, i said. if i have to, i can fetch her on those days and return her on schedule.
the other conditions i gave were that mamma mia should always be on a leash when she goes out, she sleeps inside the house, bones as food are no-no, and puppy food should be part of her diet, which i'm willing to provide.
i slept well that night, happy that mamma mia is all right and that i will see her again. but then i thought of that little boy and felt some pangs somewhere.
