this is shy mamma mia, a female puppy (original owner unknown) that we "acquired" less than 48 hours ago by accident. she strayed with her mother to a nearby gas station. unfortunately, her mother left her there. (thus her name, mamma mia.)
the gas station already has 3 big dogs, excluding those that come daily as visitors. the big dogs showed hostility to this helpless puppy, which worried the station's staff. they turned desperate when mamma mia was run over by a car. luckily, she survived unscathed because she was positioned in the middle, between the wheels. that was when they decided to pass this quivering, scared, and scarred puppy to us.
but why us? perhaps it's because every time i hear a dog yelp in pain, i at once run to the gas station to ask why. (serves me right.)
we can't keep mamma mia. two rooms in the house are already occupied by 6 adopted cats. besides, we're not staying here for long. we wouldn't dare abandon pets, though, but neither could we afford the expense of taking home with us 6 cats and a potentially big dog. (this early, i already know that it costs 200 bucks per kilo of live animal, including the weight of the pet carrier, in airfare alone.) and there are already 4 dogs back home.
but i'll do what i can for mamma mia; have her vaccinated, spayed, draw out her potential as a playful puppy, take away her fears, and convince her to trust humans. then i'll look for the best home for her in a month or so.
i believe it was mamma mia's mother who came to the gas station this morning to look for her puppy. that dog gave me an idea of how big mamma mia would turn out, fully grown. but how does one explain to a dog not to stray with her puppy to avoid the highway's dangers? how do i tell their owner, if ever i get to meet him, to be more responsible and to exercise measures so their pets won't stray?
one day soon, mamma mia will go to another home. a much better home, to be sure, because i will see to that. already, i feel like crying.
