But he should ask in faith, not doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed about by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord, since he is a man of two minds, unstable in all his ways.

Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

Where do the wars and where do the conflicts among you come from? Is it not from your passions that make war within your members? You covet but do not possess. You kill and envy but you cannot obtain; you fight and wage war. You do not possess because you do not ask. You ask but do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.

-James 4:1-3

These words could easily be speaking about the current economic, social, and political climate in the United States (or in most other Western countries) right now.  Our passions divide us.  We are separated by our own self-seeking interests.  It is an "every man for himself" kind of world.

We may get what we wanted or desired in the short term, but in the long term, a society builty on selfish desires is doomed to fail.  Corruption and deceit will eventually reign supreme.

It doesn't have to be this way.

In Matthew 7:7, we read the famous verse, "Ask and it will be given to you...", but as St. James tells us, it will not be given to us if it is only for our own desires and passions.  Jesus is not a magic genie here to fulfill our every wish.

If you pay attention to what St. James is saying, it is not that we ask that is the problem, it is the motivation behind it.  We need to stop focusing on only ourselves.  We will benefit more from the greater good than our own ability to provide for our individual needs.

United we stand?  Not if it gets in the way of our own desires.  We need to change the way we think, the way we act, and the way we treat others, or someday, it will all come tumbling down.

“Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.”

Proverbs 27:1

This is true. The October 15 earthquake event shattered the belief that even in areas that are like paradise, Bohol Island, the unexpected should always be expected. The Lord Our God alone is our refuge and our fortress. Even in the wake of the quake, He is a fortress and a solid rock for all who have survived this tragic event. Every day we have is a blessing, truly. Thank You Lord...for your blessings to all of us.

My brothers, if anyone among you should stray from the truth and someone bring him back, he should know that whoever brings back a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

-James 5:19-20

Helping someone to leave their sinful lifestyle behind can be challenging.  Simply confronting them about their sins can be frightening.  What do we gain by approaching them?  According to today's verse, more than we might realize.

In many verses, we are told to help others on their journey of faith - even correcting them when they need it, but it's more difficult than it sounds.  No one likes to be corrected.  No one likes to have their mistakes pointed out to them.

Still, we must do it.  We cannot sit idly by as our brothers and sisters are led astray.  We have to take the courageous step of trying to bring back a sinner.

God realizes that this will not help us win any popularity contests.  He sees that it will be a challenge, and for this reason, seems to offer us encouragement through today's verse.  By correcting others, we are doing the will of God, and He will recognize us for it when the time comes.

Do you have the courage to bring back a sinner?  It is a difficult challenge, but there are great rewards for them - and even for you.

But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared,he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior,so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.

"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is life not more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds in the sky; they do not sow or reap, they gather nothing into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are not you more important than they? Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your lifespan? Why are you anxious about clothes? Learn from the way the wild flowers grow. They do not work or spin. But I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was clothed like one of them. If God so clothes the grass of the field, which is grown today and thrown into the oven tomorrow, will he not much more provide for you, O you of little faith? So do not worry and say, 'What are we to eat?' or 'What are we to drink?' or 'What are we to wear?' All these things the pagans seek. Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you besides. Do not worry about tomorrow, tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for a day is its own evil."

- Matthew 6: 25-34

Such a beautiful, truly beautiful, verse from Holy Scripture:

Be not solicitous therefore, saying, What shall we eat: or what shall we drink, or wherewith shall we be clothed? For after all these things do the heathens seek. For your Father knoweth that you have need of all these things.  Seek ye therefore first the kingdom of God, and his justice, and all these things shall be added unto you.

The Gospel according to St. Matthew Chapter 6, verse 31 to 33.
