Consider a career in Physical therapy
« on: April 12, 2008, 05:23:05 AM »
A) What is Physical Therapy?

A health care profession concerned with prevention and management of movement disorders arising from conditions and diseases occurring throughout the lifespan. Physical therapy is performed by either a physical therapist (physiotherapist) or a physical therapist assistant (PTA) acting under the direction of a physical therapist. Despite this, various alternative health professions continue to employ the use of some physical therapeutic modalities in practice. A program of physical therapy will typically also involve a patient's caregivers.

B) How much do Physical Therapists make?

In the United States, after passing licensure, the median starting salary for PTs is around $65,000.
There is a wide range, many can make over $100,000.

The field is a growing one.

Diri sa ato wa pa jud hanaw mga tawo unsa ang Physical Therapy ug unsay trabaho sa Physical Therapist :(

Kasagaran nga PT's nabilin diri sa Pinas nga wa nakakitag employer sa US are into teaching jobs, call centers, med reps, working in massage parlors or Rehab volunteers (meaning no income).
Look at me, stuck in a four walled office!

It's hard to wait for something you know might not happen, but it's harder to give up when you know it's everything you wanted.

Here in the 'states, there are not enough PTs, there is a lack of PTs, actually.

With the rising baby boomer generation and the aging American population, there is a considering need of Physical Therapists for nursing homes and hospital clinics.

It is said that within 10 years, the United States will be be in need of some 200,000 nurses and about 15-20,000 physical therapists.

As of now, the United States is importing physical therapists from abroad, namely:

India
Europe
the Philippines
Latin America

The healthcare in the United States is almost stagnant, despite the rising population. This country, has over 305 million citizens yet is deficient in terms of nursing staff in its hospitals, the number of physicians-surgeons, and allied health workers.

As of right now, from my personal experiences in the hospital system and shadowing with surgeons, primary care physicians and talks with nursing staff, the country is in need of 116,000 RNS (registered nurses) to fill in the ranks of the aging nursing staff.

The amount of physicians available is also abhorrable. The United States also is in need of some 30,000-50,000 medical physicians. The rigidity of American medical schools is obvious as it is extremely hard to get into medical school here; that combined with the fact that the number of students graduated and trained are limited, as compared to the assymetrical rising population.

With these growth standards; in 20-30 years, this country will need about 75,000 physicians-surgeons to fill in the ranks.

Many will come from India, the Philippines, etc.
