Published by the Bohol Standard

Dan Joseph Quijada, a 14 year old Freshman of the Whitney High School in Cerritos, California, led a group of four students that represented their school in the FIRST Lego League World Festival last April 16-19,2008 at the Georgia Dome and Georgia World Congress Center, respectively in Atlanta, Georgia. The Whitney Team won second place in Research Project/Research Quality Category.

The acronym FIRST stands as: For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. Eighty-nine (89) competing schools participated. Coming from thirty six (36) states in the United States and from forty-three countries all over the world.

As a backgrounder, Whitney HS is listed among the top 100 Secondary Schools in the United States and is classified as a magnet school in Southern California. Where only the top ten Elementary students in the ABC Unified School District will qualify for admission. In September 1991, during the term of President George Bush, Sr., Whitney is adjudged as one of the best in America. Such recognition is contained in the Library of Congress and Senate dated September 18,1991 page S13245.

In the Newsweek 2006 Edition, again Whitney was selected among the top 19 elite High Schools in the U.S. A year after, the same publication, Newsweek, on its May 23,2007 issue listed Whitney to have maintained its lofty stature among America’s elite schools.

For a Filipino, much more a Boholano, to be admitted to such a prestigious

learning institution as Whitney is already an outstanding accomplishment.

What more if you represent the cream of the crop, among the best of the brightest?

Dan Joseph is the only son of Spouses Hermes Quijada and the former Leonarda ”Yonie” Bontog, His Dad hails from Mariveles,Dauis Bohol and was an Auditor of the Norkis Group of Companies. He used to hold office in the company owned building along CPG Avenue corner Ma.Clara Street. Whereas Dan’s mom Yonie, who was born in Carmen,Bohol, is a Chemical Engineer by profession and was a Math and Science teacher of the Central Visayas State College of Agriculture, Forestry and Technology(CVSCAFT) in Tagbilaran City.

She is now teaching Chemistry at the Dominguez High School in Campton, California. Two of its outstanding alumni graduates are NBA basketball stars Chandler Tyson of the New Orleans Hornets and Tayshaun Prince of the Detroit Pistons. The young Quijada has a 16 year old sister, .Jannie Vince who is a Junior High of the Kennedy High School.
