Published by the Bohol ChronicleA young Boholano doctor's analytical research on iodine against pneumonia has won first place in a Philippine College of Physicians (PCP) competition after his same prolific work was adjudged among the best last year by the University of the Philippines - College of Medicine (UPCM) and Philippine General Hospital (PGH).
Dr. Kazan Baluyot's briliiant research entitled "The Efficacy of Providence-Iodine Oral Rinse in Preventing Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial (VAPOR) Trial)" also earned for him the PCP Young Investigators Award in Analytical Category.
In November last year, the 31-year-old internal medicine diplomate currently pursuing his cardiology fellowship bagged a top prize for his work in the 12th UPCM-PGH Annual Research Week competition.
His outstanding research was in fact the very UPCM entry to the PCP selection.
Born in the year of the dragon, Baluyot is a son of a nurse and Bohol's humanitarian woman, former Red Cross administrator and now Philippine Gift of Life (PGOL) President/Chief Executive Officer Francisca Baluyot, and the late lawyer Manny Baluyot, also a full military colonel.
The national organization of doctors awarded and honored the young Baluyot during the 38th PCP Annual Convention at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City last May 7.
His work was presented in the convention's Young Investigators Oral Free Session.
Doctors Fernando Ayuyao, FPCP president, Charles Yu, vice president and convention chair, Rodolfo Pagcatipunan, Jr., research committee chair, Kenneth Hartigan Go, scientific committee chair, and Oscar Cabahug, research committee regent coordinator, signed the award certificate.
The best entries in different categories were selected during the physicians' convention, which was attended by some 6,000 delegates.
Baluyot both finished his internal medicine and pre-med in public health at the UCPM, where he also earned his internal medicine diplomate title.
He is presently pursuing his cardiology fellowship at the Medical City while attending to cases at the PGH.
The Medical City is a modern hospital complex supported by the Ateneo de Manila University - College of Medicine and mostly manned by PGH graduates.
Despite its infancy, the Medical City has instantly built an image as a hospital for Manila's rich and famous.
While a medical student, Baluyot already displayed sharpness and focus when he won in a University of Tokyo competition.
His academic foundation was laid strong during his elementary and secondary studies at the Bohol Wisdom School and Philippine Science High School, respectively.
Baluyot is a "most exalted brother" of the UP physicians' fraternity.
The young doctor, who is the second youngest of seven siblings, has two brothers, Al and Jojo, and two sisters, Judy and Cates, who are all nurses in the United States, another sister named Mary Ann who is a doctor here, and youngest sister Fama who is a new lawyer.
Fama, 28, is presently in a masteral study grant abroad and regarded one of the best foreign scholars of the world-renowned law school of the National University of Singapore.
