ahh, another media savvy preacher.  i hope he is telegenic.  i hope too that the tithe that his followers charitably donate to his cause would keep on coming so he could continue to buy airtime.

Yes..That would be a real turn off..Cant stand the hypocrisy of the type of TV preacher you describe!!
Just watch the guy if you have time and let me know what you think..
He often questions why certain sectors of the Christian community expect donations.. He is quite clear that he does not..
Anyway..Not trying to force the guy on anyone..Just saying that I personally trust him. My choice.

your personal choice is hereby respected.  sorry, i can't watch him.  in fact, i can't watch anything on tv because we have no tv.  i banned this distraction of too many commercial ads from the house.  i'm just wondering, though, what keeps this favorite preacher of yours on air.  is his own money supply endless that he can get by without support?  there's no such thing as a free lunch, you know.  just curious, just as he may be curious about other christians who he's questioning for accepting donations.

Ha ha!! Now you have me thinking...That I like!!
Ive never really contemplated this subject in great depth but am willing to form an opinion based on this conversation!! (Although I cant stay too long..Lots to do today)

Of course!! How could it survive otherwise?

??? now i cannot even deign to use my brain or whatever is left of it...

let me repeat, are you really saying that when religion is dying, kleptocracy dies along with it?  "if it could not survive otherwise", are you saying then that it is kleptocracy that makes religion live?  something's askew here somewhere...

Seems to me,it requires countries with high poverty levels to survive(A bit like the Church) so I was wrong when I said "predominantly Catholic countries",sorry about that!...

the temporal church does not and could not live on poverty.  like any organization, it cannot survive on nothing.  it would do well to distinguish the temporal and the spiritual sides of the church as we see it.  meanwhile, faith makes poverty bearable, whatever one's faith is.

The R.P has a 70% church attendance right? Now thats a huge mandate of support by the people which no Government could ignore(or ignore at their peril).. How much political power and influence that represents in real terms is anyone's guess..

percentaging in church attendance is at best an educated estimate.  attendance does not a religion make.  now i'm wondering how a church's political influence has gotten into our discussion...

Islander..
Thanks for that..
No idea how he funds the air time..All I know is there are no toll free numbers to ring etc and no mention of money..
He`s been preaching in the R.P since the 60`s and started out on local radio I believe. (Ang Dating Daan)
Im sure others on this forum can give you more info as he does seem to be pretty well known..Quite a character!
I have no interest to cause anyone any offence and will continue to respect others beliefs..Religion and politics are hard topics to discuss and differences of opinion can be a barrier..
This is the reason why the world is still at war..Very sad.
Must go...Im late!!

a good day to you then, zeffa.  if it assures you any, i myself am not offended (i cannot speak for the other tb readers though i'm pretty sure they have stronger reasons for not taking offense).  it's just that like you, i have my own ideas about faith and the church that i felt were worth expressing as you've expressed yours.

while religion and politics as topics for discussion tend to be endless (and sometimes divisive), we discuss these not to convince each other to one's side but only to try to clear up some misconceptions, real or otherwise.

meanwhile, religion is not necessarily the cause of today's wars.  politics, maybe.  but religion?  i cannot imagine countries going to war because one has a prophet named christ and the other is named mohammed.  these days, chances are countries go to war over territories or ideological differences or commercial interests.  that's equally sad, indeed.

There are as many reasons to go to war as there are warmongers, perhaps even more. Seems to me that war is nothing more than just one way of trying to clear up some misconceptions, real or otherwise.

Donations, otherwise known as tithes are biblical mandates. It is an order given and ordered by the Very Mouth of God.
Tithing is a test of faith. And those who abide in tithing to the 10th percent expect, in faith, and in honesty, to be
given God's abundant blessings.

Again, The Lord Thy God commands those who have ears that hear:

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.

-Malachi 3:10
