Bisaya Cebuano Language / Atong Sanina sa Hayhayan
November 17, 2008, 11:11:10 PM
Unsaon nako pagsab-it sa akong palda
Gusto nako ipakilid ug hayhay
apan unsaon nako pagdahum,
magkita man gihapon ta sa hayhayan?

"A soldier’s life is sad
but two soldier’s lives are short lived"

these are the poem's powerful lines...

maybe, the ending would have been good if you put

JUST before "Take me with you"

wink!

Poems and Poets / Letter to my Unwanted Child
August 06, 2008, 06:14:12 PM
Hi guys..im back. had a problem with my password... just retrieved now..

well. here's my take..

Letter To My Unwanted Child

Sorry.

That night,
your father and I slept
like two needles
carefully kept inside
a cold blanket.

Our language was absent.
Everything felt so humorless-
without sensation, without haste.

The air was frozen,
but our breaths remain badly
eaten with time.
Our lips were perfectly still
in muted shadows,
kisses were cracked and scored
like broken potteries,
Stares were empty,
scratching slowly,
cutting
the scene of protective silence.

He came.
Then I sighed.

And the blanket was
folded into layers of
painful movements.
Then we yawned apart
like there’s a rift between us.
And everything was left
in segments of untold stories,
and the only word, which speech
couldn’t hide within,
was You.

But like a leaf,
in that cold midnight,
holding the right of your birth,
I shook you off my bough
like you were the last one to fall.

*I passed this poem to Ricardo de Ungria, my poetry 2 instructor.
hope he will like it...and you, too...

CONGRATULATIONS TO:

BUYOG
by Bambi

Sakit  ug hapdos pa ang samad,
diin hulma sa imong pagpaniba
And dugos sa katam-is gidim-dim,
diin mo ako imong gipaka-Bathala.
Nalawos kining kadan-ag,

What makes this entry a well-written poem?

"Sakit  ug hapdos pa ang samad,"

gwapo ang start sa poem, "catching" ang image sa "wound"..
clear kaayo ang metaphor sa flower---> a woman, bee----> penetrator [man]

sa first stanza, i think there's a concept of sadomasochism

"And dugos sa katam-is gidim-dim,
diin mo ako imong gipaka-Bathala."

the act of "sucking"---> the image of parasitism [violence]
pero the speaker is aware, perhaps tolerating the draining feeling in "her"
no offense, but the speaker here is, if not so, worshiping the presence of a penetrator..
"katam-is", a pleasurable feeling in her ---> the bee can only taste sweeter

THIS IS A FEMINIST POEM

shows how women become objects of mens' delectation.

"Apan ang tanan nga kahidlaw sa imong pag-paniba,
Sa bag-ong buklad nga bulak didto ikaw nag hudyaka".

see? a struggle between bee's attention, in effect, summarizes the notion that a woman has no work but to tease men,

"flower" is an enticing image. it exudes beauty that it gets compliments.
yet underneath, since it is very delicate, it easily loses its perfection.

AN ATTACK TO MEN

"Malimbongon ka Buyog,"

hopeless one could see, the bee here is depicted as a "generalized" character.
stereotyping the male species, no offense again,
men are but foolish.

Bag-ong buklad nga maanyag nga bulak
ikaw nalipong ug nalumos sa pag-simhot.

gwapo ang ending ba..
diri gipakita ang weakness sa mga lalake,
aware pud ang speaker how deceiving women can be.
na after all, though men lose this kind of attachment,
women still know how to deliberately confide to each other [sense of sisterhood]
& triumph over men.

BUT

wala kaayo nakaklaro ang intention sa poem,
pero it has a single effect ------> dili libog ang structure.. simple pero metaphorical..

this poem reminds me of "SICK ROSE", a poem by BLAKE ata. "WORM" alng, dili bee, ang addressee.

OVERALL IMPRESSION:

1. this poem knows its language
2. not superfluous
3. it begs as worth reading
4. dili sya emotional purely, there's humor in it, perhaps its because of the language
5. provocative!!! promise!! it need not dare you to speak for emotions, it gives!
6. light but deeply felt by the poet
7. makes the ordinary and familiar  image of "bee & flower" seem extraordinary.
8. this is a good poem because, i think, it stays with me [as a reader]

congrats!!

NEXT SUBJECT:

"KABAW" [Carabao]

Deadline is tuesday next week. Goodluck!

These are the people who made the activity successful.

1. Macky Ferniz
2. El Mundo
3. Bambi
4. Scott
5. Mike L.
6. Yakiyeye

As the organiser of this activity, I would like to recognize the winner.

MACKY FERNIZ's

O Tabanog,

POINTS EARNED:

1. this is the kind of poem that you will like at first glance without trying to anylyze its depth.
2. this can have a wide range of comments since the poem carries a heavy, multiple meaning [polysemy]
3. there's a characterized speaker [though not a persona] & it has pointed to a certain distance where the addressee is positioned. use of "KABAW" is very witty. it sets the position of the speaker which is a very important element of poetry. of course, there's an underlying significance as the poet tries to explain why he uses it.
4. its title is just appropriate as it promises to achieve a certain effect
5. the subject is clear. human experience is perfectly captured under a simple yet profound circumstance.
6. the poem appeals more to its emotions than to the intellect of the readers [that's how it achieves its unique singluar effect]
7. every IMAGE of the poem is significant, doesn't intimidate the readers since it shows how "TABANOG" flies. also, its images carries a social context- metaphorical setting.
8. the tone of the poem, which i think is sensitive, reveals the attitude of the speaker to hook also the sensibilities of the readers.
9. word choice is uncontrived. simple language. some of its words help to set the mood.

OVERALL IMPRESSION: it has a very credible speaker, doesn't separate himself from the subject.

VERY SAD POEM :-[

[you can have better views, so feel free to post your thoughts]
[i'd like to thank the members who constantly send comments after every entry]

Learn English Online / THE BOY [short story]
May 23, 2008, 12:16:46 PM
by Arian Rey Tejano

Never wash your clothes. Let your older sister do it. You can only help fetching water from that well. Cook the food you like; not the food you want your boy friends to like. It’s good to walk barefoot and shirtless under the sun; the heat makes your tone tanned. Never shave your pubic hair; shave only the beard and the mustache. Don’t pluck your eyebrows. You’re not joining a pageant. Never go to the market unless you look for a new pair of rubber shoes. But don’t look for Hello Kitty bags; you are on longer a kid. But I don't like Hello Kitty. Never bring a basket unless you accompany your mother. Never let your younger sister ask you to do the dishes; scold her. You are older. Never sing Celine Dion's songs before your friends. Don’t pout your lips. Pucker it if you are silent. Don’t sashay your walk. Be haughty. If you’re riding a carabao, don’t lap your leg in the other. Don’t point your toes. Flex it. Don’t wear tight shirts and pants when you go downtown. Your cousins will see and have talks about you. Throw your flowered slippers. Get the black one. This is how you pull the rope. Be sure to grip it like a man. Don’t get scared if the pig follows after you. Just hold the rope until you reach the pigpen. Carry the rooster like you’re carressing your girl’s soft skin. When you’re with me at cockpits, shout your bet loud. Talk with the elders. The old men. You will know how they courted their wives. You will get sure ways to chase your bird. Swim like a frog; swimming like a dog makes you a sissy. Always help your beautiful teachers at school. But don’t cut flowers. You can only shovel the soil. Don’t sketch Barbie and her clothes. Draw Superman. You will be good at it. Play spiders; ignore your fancy of white cats. Play basketball. Reject your neighbor’s invitation for skipping ropes. Plant camote, cassava or Tanglad; but never plant sunflowers, rosal or morning glory.  Join with your uncles. Learn how they puff. Soon you will take cigarettes. Don’t stop when your aunts ask you to pluck their white hairs. Tell them you’re plowing your mother’s garden. Don’t say it’s your garden. Your aunts will praise your industry. Go to the ceiling. Sweep off the cobwebs. Don’t sweep the floor. Your sister can do it. During Sundays, lay down the trapal. Try to carry a 50 kilo of unmilled rice. You will dry it under the sun. Bring it to the court. Make this a weekend habit. It forms your body early on. Girls admire boys with perfect built. Do you drink rhum? Good. It heightens your tolerance. Just don’t let your mother catch you. I have warned you not to be aggresive to girls. Some of them like gentle boys. A gentleman never tells his feelings. He shows. A flower is a prerequisite to love. Chololate is a plus. When the sun shines, it is normal to feel the morning woods. It reminds you of becoming a man. If your tool needs wanking, find a safe place to imagine your girl. The way you imagine her is different from the way you think of her. Ask her things you want without embarrassment or hesitation. A man does his insidious desire without being caught by the woman he loves. This is how you pose before her. Don’t bend your knees. Don’t put your weight on one side. Forget your habit of parting your hair. You shouldn’t be conscious. She might think you’re vain. If you happen to see your girl chasing someone, don’t hate her. A man never hurts a woman. Just go directly to boy who insults your pride. Deal him with a fight. Be sure your girl will never know. Don’t cry. Don’t ask for her help if the fight gets worse. And fight back if you get punches and bruises. But what if he won’t punch or leave me bruises? You mean to say you are really going to be the kind of man who the men won’t let hurt?

Poems and Poets / Scaffolding

Though you are mature cane,
You are still grass.

How did they mount your
Pliant body

If no ropes to knot you
If sand dunes rather strengthen

Your root
Loosely you will fall

How long can
Your suntanned body endure

The light weight
Of ceaseless work.

By now, rootless-
Leafless,

As you are;
No more sap

And soundless breath
To fend

This Artificial
Growth.

Cupid
knows my Heart craves though
it is too sick to be Broken- again;
if only your Attention were as Priceless
as my Hopeful Regard,
i would have fagged
a Surreal Moment that
only the edges of a Beau’s bed
can taste the Sweetest Torture
of your tender Lips-
the Crimson promise
of perfect Intimacy.
sometimes
a Touch is all you need
to Reaffirm;
if only i knew how
to fight a single Desire,
i’d stay a closer Distance
just to be a Captive
of your Fingers.
But
there is so much to Learn;
Time is too pervasive- even if
Chance is so inviting,
You are so unwaiting.

Samtang
nagkurog-kurog
ang imong mga dahon,
nga daw bungot,
ug naglaylay
ang imong mga bunga,
nga daw itlog,
nisalom
ang imong lawas,
nga daw o****,
ngadto sa bilahan sa yuta.

Kantahi ko
Samtang gigakus ko ikaw.
Iganid ug gunit ang imong mga kamot
Sa tibuok kong lawas
Ug akong ihandus pag-apil

mabuhi pag-usab
pilion nako
