Personal Guidance

Isaiah writes, “Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’” Each of us has the ability to hear God’s word and receive his guidance when we are quiet enough to listen. How is God “speaking” to you today?

Have a pleasant weekend everyone!

I was thinking of how poor families can avail of health insurance. Simbako adunay ma-ospital ang mga tambal mahal jamo, serbisyo sa mga medical staff labaw na!
How to put emphasis on food sufficiency?  Ang mga bag-ong tubo mahadlok mahogaw ang kuko, o malagom ang panit sa init sa adlaw. Daghan kaajo ang nag-dagan sa akong ulo. May I propose DIY solar cooker?  There are templates on how to make it. It is used in Africa and Bangladesh, if we use local materials and maybe we sell the  raw stuff, people will not cut trees discriminately which contributes to global warming. We can make some brain storming, Lay.

thanks for your willingness to do something to help. Do you have some background in computer hardware? What if I deliver to you old pc ( towers) i-assemble for use in our baryo. Bentaha na lang kon makakat-ong ang mga bata ug pag upload sa mga basics, mag toon ug Words. Ang teklado dinhi lain kaysa atong natun-an sa eskwelahan.

anong say mo Lay?

December 04, 2008, 07:06:40 PM
This Monday will be a very important day - the 8th of December. For it is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.
The Hour of Grace
[/color]
It is also the anniversary of the death of the Venerable Archdeacon Cavanagh, the Parish Priest of Knock in Ireland, and the priest who said the original 100 consecutive Masses for the holy souls on which our own novena is based.

It is also the day on which in 1947 Our Blessed Mother gave to us the Hour of Grace.
Our Lady said as follows: "It is my wish that every year, on 8th December, at noon, the HOUR OF GRACE FOR THE WORLD be celebrated . Many divine and bodily graces will be received through this devotion. Our Lord, my Divine Son Jesus, will send His overflowing mercy if good people will pray continuously for their sinful brother….. it is my wish that the HOUR OF GRACE FOR THE WORLD be made known and spread throughout the world. If anyone is unable to visit his church, yet will pray at noon at home, he will also receive graces through me…..will find a secure heavenly ladder and receive protection and grace through my motherly heart. "

Set out below this email is the formula for the hour of grace. Our Lady promised she will hear any prayer we make at this time.

THE REQUEST OF OUR BLESSED MOTHER FOR THE HOUR OF GRACE :

1. Day and time of the Hour of Grace: December 8th, Feast of the Immaculate Conception, to be started at 12:00 noon and continuing until 1:00 p.m. for one full hour of prayer.

2. During this hour, the person making the "Hour of Grace" either at home or at Church must put away all distractions (do not answer the telephones, or answer any doors, or do anything but totally concentrate on your union with God during this special Hour of Grace).

3. Begin the Hour of Grace by praying three (3) times the 51st Psalm with out-stretched arms. (Psalm 51 appears below)

4. The rest of the Hour of Grace may be spent in silent communication with God meditating upon the Passion of Jesus, saying the Holy Rosary, praising God in your own way, or by using favorite prayers, singing hymns, meditating upon other psalms, etc.

Please copy and distribute this message. Remember to pray for your country during this hour. The Blessed Virgin has requested that her important message be sent throughout the entire world. Please help her Mission: that all souls be drawn to GOD, and that JESUS will be loved in every heart. This is the perpetual song of her heart. Let it also be ours.

PSALM 51
Have mercy on me, God, in your goodness; in your abundant compassion blot out my offense. Wash away all my guilt; from my sin cleanse me. For I know my offense; my sin is always before me. Against you alone have I sinned; I have done such evil in your sight That you are just in your sentence, blameless when you condemn. True, I was born guilty, a sinner, even as my mother conceived me. Still, you insist on sincerity of heart; in my inmost being teach me wisdom. Cleanse me with hyssop, that I may be pure; wash me, make me whiter than snow. Let me hear sounds of joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. Turn away your face from my sins; blot out all my guilt. A clean heart create for me, God; renew in me a steadfast spirit. Do not drive me from your presence, nor take from me your holy spirit. Restore my joy in your salvation; sustain in me a willing spirit. I will teach the wicked your ways, that sinners may return to you. Rescue me from death, God, my saving God, that my tongue may praise your healing power. Lord, open my lips; my mouth will proclaim your praise. For you do not desire sacrifice; a burnt offering you would not accept. My sacrifice, God, is a broken spirit; God, do not spurn a broken, humbled heart. Make Zion prosper in your good pleasure; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Then you will be pleased with proper sacrifice, burnt offerings and holocausts; then bullocks will be offered on your altar.

The Most Important Miracle

In the Kingdom, all will come to know God’s wisdom. Even those who “err in spirit” and “grumble” will accept God’s teaching, Isaiah says. Anyone who has been a parent or a teacher will appreciate what a miracle that will be! In your life, how has God taught you true wisdom?

I Saw Jesus Today

Vinita Wright

I saw Jesus on the train today. He had worked a long shift, his coveralls a patchwork of sweat and grime; yet he joked with a coworker in the adjacent seat. I saw Jesus awhile later, as the crowd filed onto the stairs to the street belowâ€"he was a young girl with two small children in tow, her nerves clearly frayed. And then, in the grocery store, there was Jesus again, a check-out clerk who smiled and wished me a good evening. The next time I saw him, he was stuck in traffic, his business suit rumpled and his eyes weary. And when I walked by my neighbor's house, Jesus sat on the front step, passing the time with a friend.

When Jesus came to share our human existence, he changed what it means to be ordinary people going through the day. Each one of us has a purpose and a place in the world. Each of us experiences pain, fatigue, humor, and hope. If we look more intently at the people we encounter on a typical day, we will see who they truly areâ€"persons loved by God. Regardless of appearance or situation, the woman, man, or child before you is brimming with holy possibility. Consider that you are gazing into the eyes of God. Understand that Jesus comes to you in many faces and places.

Humility
today´s Gospel:

When Jesus entered Capernaum,
a centurion approached him and appealed to him, saying,
“Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, suffering dreadfully.”
He said to him, “I will come and cure him.”
The centurion said in reply,
“Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof;
only say the word and my servant will be healed.
For I too am a man subject to authority,
with soldiers subject to me.
And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes;
and to another, ‘Come here,’ and he comes;
and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him,
“Amen, I say to you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith.
I say to you, many will come from the east and the west,
and will recline with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob
at the banquet in the Kingdom of heaven.”

TANGLAD

Fresh lemon grass - Herb Against Cancer

While I was undergoing chemotherapy for ovarian cancer, my
oncologist, Dr. Cecilia Llave, suggested that I try tanglad (lemon
grass) for a drink, a tip she got from one of her patients.

That's what I have been doing the past three years. I don't know if
tanglad has something to do with it but so far I'm okay.

A few weeks ago, an article on the medicinal powers of tanglad went
the rounds of internet. There's no harm trying this. A bunch of
tanglad is very cheap. Or you can plant it in your backyard for a
steady supply.

The article is by Allison Kaplan Sommer:

"At first, Benny Zabidov, an Israeli agriculturalist
who grows greenhouses full of lush spices on a pastoral farm in Kfar
Yedidya in the Sharon region, couldn't understand why so many cancer
patients from around the country were showing up on his doorstep
asking for fresh lemon grass.

"It turned out that their doctors had sent them.

"'They had been told to drink eight glasses of hot water with fresh
lemongrass steeped in it on the days that they went for their
radiation and chemotherapy treatments," Zabidov told ISRAEL21c. "And
this is the place you go to in Israel for fresh lemon grass.'

"It all began when researchers at Ben Gurion University of the Negev
discovered last year that the lemon aroma in herbs like lemon grass
kills cancer cells in vitro, while leaving healthy cells unharmed.

"The research team was led by Dr. Rivka Ofir and Prof. Yakov
Weinstein, incumbent of the Albert Katz Chair in Cell-
Differentiation and Malignant Diseases, from the Department of
Microbiology and Immunology at BGU.

"Citral is the key component that gives the lemony aroma and taste in
several herbal plants such as lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus),
melissa (Melissa officinalis) and verbena (Verbena officinalis. )

"According to Ofir, the study found that citral causes cancer cells
to 'commit suicide: using apoptosis, a mechanism called programmed
cell death.

"A drink with as little as one gram of lemon grass contains enough
citral to prompt the cancer cells to commit suicide in the test tube.

"The BGU investigators checked the influence of the citral on
cancerous cells by adding them to both cancerous cells and normal
cells that were grown in a petri dish. The quantity added in the
concentrate was equivalent to the amount contained in a cup of
regular tea using one gram of lemon herbs in hot water. While the
citral killed the cancerous cells, the normal cells remained unharmed.

"The findings were published in the scientific journal Planta
Medica, which highlights research on alternative and herbal
remedies. Shortly afterwards, the discovery was featured in the
popular Israeli press.

"Why does it work? Nobody knows for certain, but the BGU scientists
have a theory.

"'In each cell in our body, there is a genetic program which causes
programmed cell death. When something goes wrong, the cells divide
with no control and become cancer cells. In normal cells, when the
cell discovers that the control system is not operating correctly -
for example, when it recognizes that a cell contains faulty genetic
material following cell division - it triggers cell death," explains
Weinstein. "This research may explain the medical benefit of these
herbs.'

"The success of their research led them to the conclusion that herbs
containing citral may be consumed as a preventative measure against
certain cancerous cells.

"As they learned of the BGU findings in the press, many physicians
in Israel began to believe that while the research certainly needed
to be explored further, in the meantime it would be advisable for
their patients, who were looking for any possible tool to fight
their condition, to try to harness the cancer-destroying properties
of citral.

"That's why Zabidov's farm - the only major grower of fresh lemon
grass in Israel - has become a pilgrimage destination for these
patients. Luckily, they found themselves in sympathetic hands.
Zabidov greets visitors with a large kettle of aromatic lemon grass
tea, a plate of cookies, and a supportive attitude.

"'My father died of cancer, and my wife's sister died young because
of cancer," said Zabidov. "So I understand what they are dealing
with. And I may not know anything about medicine, but I'm a good
listener. And so they tell me about their expensive painful
treatments and what they've been through. I would never tell them to
stop being treated, but it's great that they are exploring
alternatives and drinking the lemon grass tea as well."

"Zabidov knew from a young age that agriculture was his calling. At
age 14, he enrolled in the Kfar Hayarok Agricultural high school.
After his army service, he joined an idealistic group which headed
south, in the Arava desert region, to found a new moshav
(agricultural settlement) called Tsofar.

"'We were very successful; we raised fruits and vegetables, and," he
notes with a smile, "We raised some very nice children."

"On a trip to Europe in the mid-80s, he began to become interested
in herbs.

Israel , at the time, was nothing like the trend-conscious
cuisine-oriented country it is today, and the only spices being grown
commercially were basics like parsley, dill, and coriander.

"Wandering in the Paris market, looking at the variety of herbs and
spices, Zabidov realized that there was a great export potential in
this niche. He brought samples back home with him, "which was
technically illegal," he says with a guilty smile, to see how they
would grow in his desert greenhouses.

Soon, he was growing basil, oregano, tarragon, chives, sage,
marjoram and melissa, and mint just to name a few.

"His business began to outgrow his desert facilities, and so he
decided to move north, settling in the moshav of Kfar Yedidya, an
hour and a half north of Tel Aviv. He is now selling "several
hundred kilos" of lemon grass per week, and has signed with a
distributor to package and put it in health food
stores.

"Zabidov has taken it upon himself to learn more about the
properties of citral, and help his customers learn more, and has
invited medical experts to his farm to give lectures about how the
citral works and why.

"He also felt a responsibility to know what to tell his customers
about its see. 'When I realized what was happening, I picked up the
phone and called Dr. Weinstein at Ben-Gurion University , because
these people were asking me exactly the best way to consume the
citral. He said to put the loose grass in hot water, and drink
about eight glasses each day.'

"Zabidov is pleased by the findings, not simply because it means
business for his farm, but because it might influence his own
health. "Even before the news of its benefits were demonstrated, he
and his family had been drinking lemon grass in hot water for
years, 'just because it tastes good.'

Bolingits, you have a fantastic posting, aduna kay background sa agrar-farming?
There are organizations here in Germany who supports coconut planters, sad to say they are more concentrated in Mindanao because of the vast  area.
Oil palm production is now passe´.  The world market is asking for more copras, coconut oil for cosmetics and food industries. Husks are uses for rugs and carpets, etc.
What is the function of Phil Coconut industry?  Is this still existent?

This poor guy happens to work as a humble technician. Can you imagine if he was a German? Of course he would be treated differently. Why this discrepancy?  The Arabs has very low respect to us as Asians.  If the government names OFW as the modern hero who brings circa 14 billion dollars in remittances annually , why can´t there be no concrete help in cases like these?
This issue has been brought over and over again, but to no avail. It pains me to the heart to hear cases like this, abused kababayans who work hard to sustain family at home.

Hello to people who are going to Candijay!

Bohol in general is a peaceful place. Candijay is far from the capital city but it has some things to offer.  There are Germans who never speaks english or tagalog yet they are enjoying their stay. So why bother yourself with unnecessary troubles. Put your trust in the Divine Providence. In emergency cases towns have a hospitals.
Water from the faucet is not safe, eat real cooked foods and don´t stay so much in the sun.
Enjoy your stay and welcome to Bohol.

St. Paul and Prayer

We can see from St. Paul’s letters that prayer was an important part of his life. He prayed because God was the center of his universe. “For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.” (Romans 11:36) “Pray without ceasing,” he told the Thessalonians, “In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17â€"18)

Paul addresses his prayer to God the Father, in the name of Jesus, and by the power of the Holy Spirit: “In the same way, the Spirit too comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit itself intercedes with inexpressible groanings.” (Romans 8:26) Paul rarely prays for worldly things like health, prosperity, or healing. These things don’t last. He says that “we look not to what is seen but to what is unseen; for what is seen is transitory, but what is unseen is eternal.” (2 Corinthians 4:18)

Ephesians offers a good summary of Pauline prayer,

“. . . that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the holy ones what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” (Ephesians 3:17â€"19)

How to remove the middleman?  Organize a cooperative.  This is very practical and it helps the fisherman to get the most of their catch.  Life is not really easy for them, I know they sell the bigger ones and the rest smaller catch are consumed.  There are authorities who must help them. TB members who are in our province please try and see some possibilities.
I am not updated of our government agencies, I think we can do some urgent letters to them to get their attention.

St. Paul on Making Moral Choices

You and your family may visit a fast food restaurant once or twice a week. As you look at the menu on the wall above, you see a variety of meals to choose from. You may order the same thing every time, but if you are in the mood for something else, there are plenty of options. It’s easy to take all these choices for granted.

People who lived in New Testament times did not have these options. They had no refrigeration, so food spoiled quickly. When early Christians prayed for their daily bread, at times they did not even know if any food was available in the city. Since it was expensive and spoiled so fast, meat was scarce. One of the best sources for meat was at one of the local temples.

Like all Greek cities, Corinth had many temples dedicated to a variety of pagan gods. Each temple had a staff of priests for that particular cult. When a person wanted to offer a sacrifice to a particular god, he or she would bring an animal for the priests to kill. After the sacrifice, the slaughtered animal would remain at the temple as partial payment for the offering. The priests would clean the animal and use the meat as food. When they had too much meat for their own needs, the temple priests would sell the extra meat at the local meat market. If you went to a dinner where meat was served, it was likely that it came from an animal that had been offered in sacrifice earlier that day.

This raised an issue that St. Paul needed to address with the church in Corinth. Some church members were upset that other members were eating meat that had been offered to pagan gods. Paul addressed this issue in 1 Corinthians 8.

Eating the Meat of Idols

Paul recognizes that some of the Christians in Corinth would have no problems eating meat from the temples. Nor should they do so.

So about the eating of meat sacrificed to idols: we know that "there is no idol in the world," and that "there is no God but one." Indeed, even though there are so-called gods in heaven and on earth (there are, to be sure, many "gods" and many "lords"), yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom all things are and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things are and through whom we exist. (1Corinthians 8: 4â€"6)

The Christians in Corinth who realized that there is one God and that Jesus was the Son of God were not troubled by eating the meat that had once been offered to idols. Some Christians would even have meals in the temples with the temple priests. Meat was meat, and those gods did not exist.

There were other members of the church, however, whose understanding of Christian teaching was not as clear. They were unsure of the relationship between pagan gods and the one God. These Christians were uncomfortable being served meat that had been used in temple sacrifices. As Paul notes:

But not all have this knowledge. There are some who have been so used to idolatry up until now that, when they eat meat sacrificed to idols, their conscience, which is weak, is defiled. (1Corinthians 8:7)

The problem for Paul is that those Christians who rightly did not have problems eating the meat from idols would too many times criticize those who were having problems. The Christians who ate the meat thought that they had greater insight into the freedom won by Jesus Christ because they were not worried about pagan gods.

Paul was critical of those Christians who thought they knew better than their fellow Christians. He agreed with them in principle that meat was meat, and so they were technically correct in eating it. However these Christians had to make sure that their sense of being right did not become a stumbling block for their weaker fellow Christians.

Thus through your knowledge, the weak person is brought to destruction, the brother for whom Christ died. When you sin in this way against your brothers and wound their consciences, weak as they are, you are sinning against Christ. (1Corinthians 8: 11â€"12)

Making a Moral Choice

We can look at the situation Paul was addressing in terms of the process of making a moral decision. Moral decisions are made by people who are free and take responsibility for their actions. The morality of any act has three dimensionsâ€"the act chosen, the intention behind the act, and the circumstances that surround the act.

In this case the act chosen is the good of feeding oneself and others. We need to eat to live, and offering hospitality to others is a Christian obligation. So those Christians who served the meat or who were dining with friends in the temple were acting in a morally good way. The meat helped fulfill their need for food.

The second issue is the intention behind their act. Here things get a little more complicated. If the intention of the Christians who were serving meat offered to idols was to give themselves and their guests a good meal, this was a morally good thing to do. But suppose they knew that serving meat that had been part of a pagan sacrifice would make their guests uncomfortable.  But they served it anyway because they wanted to watch their guests squirm or they wanted to show off their own “superior” understanding of Christian teaching. In either case, the act would be morally wrong because their intent was to embarrass their fellow Christians.

When you sin in this way against your brothers and wound their consciences, weak as they are, you are sinning against Christ. (1Corinthians 8:12)

The third issue is the circumstances surrounding the act. As we have seen, in ancient times food was scarce and people had to eat what they received or what they could find. The food supply for the next day was uncertain. A Christian might serve meat from a pagan temple to his or her guests because that was the only food available to serve. There might not have been fruits, vegetables, or fish in the market that day. If meat from a pagan temple was all there was to eat, it would lessen the moral issue of whether the host was offending the conscience of his guest. In the same way today, a person’s responsibility is lessened if he or she is forced or tricked into committing an immoral act. It is important to recognize that it is never a good moral choice to do an immoral act for the sake of some imagined positive result.

Paul wrote that his own choice in the situation he described was to act in such a way that he would not be the source of scandal against his fellow Christians.

Therefore, if food causes my brother to sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I may not cause my brother to sin. (1 Corinthians 8:13)

Paul emphasized throughout his writings the need for Christians to support one another and love one another. This is especially true because

Now you are Christ's body, and individually parts of it. (1 Corinthians 12: 27)

Paul is urged his fellow Christians to understand that with the freedom won through Jesus Christ is the responsibility that the individual has towards the community. Decisions that we make that we might think are our own private business in fact have social consequences. There is no such thing as a sin that hurts no one. Paul emphasizes that rather than think of our choices as simply our own business we have to recognize our responsibility to others as well.

If Peace of Mind is Your Goal

If being right is your goal,
you may find error in the world,
and seek to change it to match your expectations.
But don't expect peace of mind.

If peace of mind is your goal,
look for errors in your expectations;
seek to change them, not the world.
And always be prepared to be wrong.

Have a nice weekend everyone!
