Unless you’re drinking at least three cups of coffee a day, you should consider upping your java habit.

The US dietary guidelines advisory committee, which makes recommendations to the Food and Drug Administration and other federal agencies, released a report this week that points to the health benefits and minimal risks of drinking three to five cups of coffee a day, including a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The report describes three to five cups (400 mg) as a “moderate range,” but if that’s more than you drink, you’re not alone: As Quartz reported last year, no country on earth drinks that much coffee per capita. The United States consumes about .93 cups per day per person, according to data from Euromonitor. The highest average intake was in the Netherlands, with 2.4 cups per person.

Of course, those numbers don’t account for people too young to drink coffee, and the panel discourages children and adolescents from drinking caffeinated beverage. But even looking at the US population that is over 18, per capita consumption is only 1.21 cups per personâ€"still way below the committee’s suggested coffee intake.

Committee member Tom Brenna, a nutritionist at Cornell University, told Bloomberg that since the advisory body last met in 2010, “there’s been a heck of a lot of work on coffee,” which led the advisory body to make its recommendations. “Coffee’s good stuff,” Brenna said. “I don’t want to get into implying coffee cures cancerâ€"nobody thinks that. But there is no evidence for increased risk, if anything, the other way around.”

The committee did caution that people should watch how much calorie-heavy sugar and milk they add to their morning (and afternoon, and evening) joe. And it said “there is a need to consider sustainability issues of coffee production in economic and environmental terms.”

There’s also the cost to worry about. Let’s say you’re in the middle of the recommended allotment, downing 24oz a day. At a premium coffee chain like Starbucks that might cost about $2.50 per 12oz (355ml) of coffee, or $1,825 per year. Fortunately, it’s still considered safe to self-medicate at home.

We store an awful lot of information about peopleâ€"consciously and unconsciouslyâ€"especially when those faces belong to conspecifics (ranging from immediate family members to fellow churchgoers and so forth).

A 2010 experiment at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tubingen, Germany provided evidence that both humans and monkeys use similar physical mechanisms for the task of processing facial information. They used a well-known illusion called the “Thatcher illusion” to aid them.

The Thatcher illusion demonstrates that the brain has a hard time processing the image of a face if it is upside down. You will think that the photo looks alright when, in reality, it has been distorted before being turned around and shown to you.

The scientists in Germany, who published their results in Proceedings B of the Royal Society, had humans and macaque monkeys look at two photos of a face next to each otherâ€"one normal, one distorted. Two more of the same photos were placed under those, but these ones were upside down. They were then shown the same layout using the faces of the opposite species.

For the humans looking at themselves, it was obvious which photo was distorted when right-side-up, but the upside-down photos produced the Thatcher illusion as normal. But, when they looked at the photo of the macaques, the Thatcher illusion was present with all sets of photos. The distortions were nearly invisible.

The monkeys were trained and prepared for the task through a period of environmental habituation and then implanted with a headpiece that would track their eye movements. What researchers found was that the monkeys performed exactly the same, easily recognizing the distortions in their own species (but only when right-side-up), but not those in the humans.

Both people and monkeys process faces holistically, and the fact that both species possess a counterpart to the Thatcher illusion, if verified, demonstrates the similar ways both brains evolved to recognize facial features. -- http://listverse.com/

For years now, when blessed with a free moment, Freddie Roach would pull up video of Floyd Mayweather fights and look for weaknesses. He was devising a strategy just in case his fighter, Manny Pacquiao, actually one day got a shot at the unbeaten champ.

Over and over, shoulder roll after shoulder roll, Roach, maybe more than any participant, promoter or fan, dreamed of the dream matchup.

"It's a huge challenge for Manny, no question," Roach told Yahoo Sports' Kevin Iole. "But I think it's a fight that he can win."

Now, or at least May 2, we'll find out.

The mega-fight is signed and what will come in a 2½-month blitz of promotion will be big hype, big talk and big money. The bout promises to shatter all sorts of records, from total gate to pay-per-view purchases until both parties rake in more than $100 million each.

What it won't do is "save" the sport or anything along that vein, even if that's what will almost certainly become a media narrative.

Boxing isn't going to be saved by anything. This is a different era, a different time. No one fight can spin the calendar back to the 1960s. In many ways, it doesn't need to be saved. There remains a vibrant base of fans, just more heavily centered on African-Americans and Hispanics.

Older white fans, obsessed with mainstream stick-and-ball sports, will always lament the lack of a compelling heavyweight division, but reality isn't changing.

Boys of that size are going to be pushed to basketball and football, where more money, opportunity and scholarships await.

Boxing has always been a sport for the poorest of the poor. Pacquiao left his boyhood home in General Santos City in the Philippines at age 14 because his parents had too many mouths to feed. Mayweather simply went into the family business, following his father Floyd Sr. and uncle Roger.

Filipinos need to explore cacao’s potential as a major export commodity to points in North America and Europe, according to Alyssa Jade McDonald-Bartl, a social entrepreneur and founder of Blyss Chocolate.

“I am highly impressed with the cacao you grow here,” McDonald-Bartl recently told a group of Filipino cacao farmers, chefs, and culinary business experts.

She also mentioned how she was particularly struck by the way the stakeholders all worked together to maintain the industry’s high standards.

McDonald-Bartl is currently in the country for a series of speaking engagements.

Humans and the great apes have the innate ability to recognize themselves in mirrorsâ€"a trait that only a few other animals share. Monkeys are supposed to be incapable of this form of self-recognition.

This began to change in 2015, when researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences realized that, while rhesus monkeys might not be seeing themselves at first, they could be taught to recognize themselves. They developed training techniques that included a variation on the standard test for mirror self-recognition (which involves marking a monkey’s face and seeing if they can find it in the mirror).

Holding the monkeys in front of a mirror, the researchers shone a laser light on them. A food reward was given if the monkeys touched the laser points on their own faces by seeing them in the mirror. After two to five weeks, they began to do so regularly.Their results were published in the journal Cell Biology. The study notes that, even after the experiments were over, most of the monkeys continued to exhibit mirror-induced behavior on their own. The authors believe that the study shows that while monkeys may lack the neurological “software” for self-recognition, they do have the capacity, or “hardware,” to do so inside them.

This “gap” between innate self-recognition and an undeveloped but present capacity for it can teach us a lot about how the neural mechanisms for mirror self-awareness (and consciousness in general) evolved in primates originally, including ourselves. -- http://listverse.com/

Yin Tao Xan, a cannibal pedophile sentenced to death in China asked this weekend as his last meal … a little boy.

Man, that will be executed by lethal injection next week filing his application stating that he wanted to enjoy a maximum of 8 years old child. He also said he refused the child to be of Asian origin.

The Department of Corrections is supposed to have to accept all the demands of any kind. So it may be that they are buying a corpse in a morgue to satisfy the desires of Yin Tao Xan.

Yin Tao Xan was sentenced to death in 2008 for rape and cannibalism of children in his neighborhood.

Imagine living in a society where people routinely fart in public, blow their noses into their hands, spit indoors, and relieve themselves in front of company. Sound like something from an OCD nightmare? It’s exactly what you’d experience if you took your first time-traveling vacation in 18th-century England.

For most people, hygiene was nothing more than a fancy word they couldn’t spell. The average man on the street had breath that could strip paint, and social niceties were unheard of. It was far from uncommon to eat a meal with your hands, wipe those hands down your shirt, and then fart loudly before spitting a wodge of mucus onto the floor.

But what if you limited your journey to the homes of the upper classes? Sorry, but they were no better. While conversing after dinner, men would often pull out a chamber pot and relieve themselves in front of guests.

Even if you spent your entire vacation avoiding other humans at all costs, you’d still encounter their disgusting by-products. Human waste was so prevalent that any food, water, or milk you could get hold of was probably contaminated in the grossest way possible. -- http://listverse.com/

100,000 North Koreans reportedly working abroad as slaves to fund Kim Jong-un's luxurious lifestyle
By ANI | â€" 17 hours ago

London, Feb 21 (ANI): Human rights activists say that nearly 100,000 North Koreans are being forced to work abroad as slaves abroad to fund Kim-Jong-un and his administration's luxurious lifestyle.

According to Daily Express, Ahn Myeong-chul, the head of NK Watch, a Seoul-based rights group, told the New York Times the country's regime was "exploiting their labour and salaries to fatten the private coffers of Kim Jong-un."

The rights group said that it suspected that Kim Jong-un was using some of the money to buy luxury goods for his elite followers and finance the recent building boom in Pyongyang that the North Korean tyrant reportedly launched to show off his leadership.

Activists said that a majority of the North Korean workers - close to 25,000 - were sent to Russia as slaves and their wages were collected by Pyongyang.

Human rights groups say the conditions faced by many North Korean workers sent away to such arrangements are tantamount to slavery, the report added. (ANI)

PSEi hits 14th record high for 2015
Friday, February 20, 2015

PHILIPPINE shares surged to a fresh all-time high on Friday, the 14th time for this year.

The Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) closed at 7,825.39, up by 21.94 points or 0.3 percent. The previous closing high was 7,803.45 reached on February 18.

“Trading activity may be muted because of the Lunar New Year break in other countries but it has obviously not kept the index from gaining," PSE president and chief executive officer Hans Sicat said.

"We are pleased that alongside the record highs, we have seen the market’s daily average turnover almost double to P11.70 billion from the same period last year. We hope that this level of activity will be sustained, and hopefully even improve in the coming months,” he added.

The PSEi has gained 8.2 percent year-to-date. (SDR/Sunnex)

9. Take the TV out of the bedroom

It encourages conversation with your partner, and makes for a more interactive, better-balanced relationship.

10. Make every space useful

You want to breathe life into all that square footage. Every space must have a purpose.

6. Replace your straight edges with softer, rounder shapes

A round or oval table allows for better flow of chi (energy). Equality makes for better energy.

7. Junk anything chipped or cracked

Practically speaking, they can be dangerous. Feng Shui says that these correspond to a dead energy.

8. Stay minimalist with your kitchen counter

The kitchen is the heart of the home and you don’t want that heart filled with piles of unnecessary objects.
#9450
3. Look at what’s under your bed

All that junk you’ve stuffed under your bed frame may be cluttering up your space (and mind) with unwanted energy. Discard what’s no longer needed.

4. Change your clock’s batteries.

If it has stopped ticking, time has stopped and you can’t move forward.

5. Get those door locks working

For practical reasons, you’ve got to stay safe. Feng Shui says that unhinged openings leave you with a feeling of insecurity (and with good reason!).

If you’re at your wit's end figuring out how to redo your furniture layout or organize your kids’ rooms in time for the new year, look to this thousands-old Chinese art for some simple, mess-defying strategies.

Superstitious or not, if you’re out of ideas, these suggestions may come in handy!

1. Change your color palette

Different shades correspond to different energies, so figure out what kind of vibe you’d like for your room and redo your color scheme. Red means energy, yellow refers to centering. Blacks and dark blues are soothing, while white means purity. Green is perfect for growth.

2. Cover up your windows

Curtains will stop positive energy from escaping your inner sanctum.

A lawmaker is pushing for the immediate passage of a bill that will penalize children who abandon their parents no longer able to fend for themselves.

Cavite Rep. Roy Loyola said House Bill 5336, to be known as the Parents Welfare Act of 2014, requires children to provide their old and sick parents support for sustenance, clothing, residence, medical attendance and other amenities that would enable them to lead a normal life.

The bill imposes the penalty of imprisonment of one month to six months or a fine of not more than P100,000 if the respondent continues to fail to give support for three consecutive months without justifiable cause.

“Whoever, having the care of protection of a parent in need of support, leaves such parent in any place with the intention of wholly abandoning the latter, shall be punished with imprisonment of six years to 10 years and a fine of not less than P300,000,” the bill states.

In filing the bill, Loyola said the elderly abandoned in the streets have become a common sight because children fail to provide the necessary support for their old and sick parents.

“This happens despite our moral and natural obligation to support our parents who are in need of our help. In the same vain, our Family Code imposes on us the legal obligation to support our elderly,” he said.

Loyola said while the government is doing its best to provide support in the form of food and shelter as well as enacting legislation like the Senior Citizens Act, taking care of the elderly is a shared responsibility of the government and the children of these elderly.     â€" Paolo Romero

3.   Mung beans

Many remember growing these in plastic cups for a science project in high school, but you can actually grow them for home use. Fill one third of a mason jar of dried beans and the rest with water.  Let it soak overnight and then remove the water the next day. Place the mason jar with the pre-soaked beans in a dark, gloomy area; not under direct sunlight. Remove any excess water that you see every night as leaving it will encourage mold. Within 3 to 5 days, enjoy  the freshly grown sprouts. Aside from mung beans you can use other sprouting seeds like alfalfa.

4.   Fragrant herbs

Peppermint, dill, coriander, basil. The list is endless. There are so many fragrant herbs to use for your meals. Herbs can be purchased as seeds in packets or as seedlings already potted in containers. Place them by a sunny window or under direct sunlight.

5.   Mushrooms

Buy prepared bags of compost that are mixed with mushroom spawn. Place in a pan with a few inches of soil and leave in a dark, draft-free place such as a cupboard or tool shed. Mushrooms sprout quickly and can be grown year round. Enjoy these flavorful morsels with many of your dishes.

How To Tips / Edible plants that are easy to grow at home
February 18, 2015, 12:03:50 PM
Property24 Philippines â€" Tue, Feb 17, 2015

For those who love to cook and would like to exercise their green thumb, growing your own herbs and vegetables at home is a great idea. Its easy and fun, and you dont have to worry about what pesticides have been used on your food.

Contrary to what many think, growing your own herbs and vegetables is not expensive and doesnt require a lot of space as you can easily grow them in containers that can fit in your kitchen or the garden.

Here are some edible plants that can be grown easily in your kitchen or your backyard.

1.   Chili

Usually bought already as a seedling, chili plants grow easily in warm, sunny climates. You can also use the seeds removed from store bought chilis and plant them directly into the soil.  Chilis do not need much water so just make sure to dampen the soil every day. Also, chilis come in a variety of colors and spice-levels so dont hesitate to ask for more information from your local gardener or flower nursery.

2.   Calamansi

A citrus fruit native to the Philippines, calamansi is not only used in many local dishes but it is believed to bring good luck which is why many calamansi trees are cultivated indoors. Homeowners enjoy having them inside as well because the blossoms emit a nice, fresh fragrance.

For this type of plant, it is easier to grow a seedling bought from the nursery. And once they grow a little bigger in size, transfer them to a more spacious location in the garden. Depending on the variety, calamansi trees can grow up to five feet.

What about the inevitable rest of the story?

Persistence of poverty at about 25% (including barely clothed child beggars in Manila’s entertainment quarter) sustained by lack of jobs, destruction from seasonal typhoons and lingering corruption will keep dogging the country’s economic growth. Every six years a new president will take office, sometimes overturning policies of the past administration for personal glory or lack of experience.

But the biggest spoiler is violence in Mindanao. The national government reached a peace and conceptual power-sharing deal with major Muslim rebel group the Moro Islamic Liberation Front last year, raising hope for development in the country’s breadbasket, chief unexplored mining hub and tourism paradise to-be, also home to 25 million largely impoverished people. A battle that killed 44 commandos in January has cast doubt on the peace deal, delayed passage of laws to lock in power-sharing and angered a hopeful public. “It’s just part (of the Philippines) but it plays a significant role,” Ravelas says. “The population, the potential in that area are tremendous.”

Outsourcing is in: The Philippines has overtaken India in voice call centers for multinationals including Western banks and IT firms due to client preference for the local English accent, Uy calculates. It’s on its way to growing out other back-office services as the government earmarks $25.19 million to train a range of talent, including accountants and medical transcriptionists. (There’s already a surplus of trained nurses.) Call centers add jobs, creating new income and a passion for once largely unaffordable brands such as Apple and Hermes. Each of the roughly half million call center workers generates another two service jobs because “you have to feed them,” especially at night when it’s daytime in countries where the calls originate, Ravelas notes. Call center numbers are growing about 20% per decade, he says.

Money keeps coming home. Numbers of Filipino workers overseas aren’t growing now as they did in the 1980s, but the 2 million spread across the globe bring in more every year, for about $22 billion in 2014.

China Plus One: The Philippines, like other parts of emerging Southeast Asia, is encouraging multinationals to scrap plans for expanding factories in China. Do it instead in the Philippines, the government is urging. The country lags Asia in FDI for lack of infrastructure and distance from export markets. But labor costs less in the industrial parks around Manila compared to China’s east coast cities and Filipino workers know English, ideal for training them or assigning them to write product manuals for Western countries. Taiwanese PC parts contractor Kinpo Electronics invested $30 million last year and is expected to follow with the same amount this year, halting similar China plans, says Benedict Uy, a Philippine trade representative in Taipei. A slate of Japanese printer makers including Seiko Epson Corp., Brother International and Lexmark International also have expanded in the Philippines rather than China, he adds. “That’s our strategy,” he says. “We try to knock on their doors and also bring in the entire (supply) chain.” Foreign direct investment rose from 173 billion pesos ($3.9 billion) in 2004 to 274 billion pesos in 2013, government statistics show.

Infrastructure madness: Spending on roads, airports and seaports will reach about 5% of the $294 billion economy next year. One dedicated highway will link Manila’s airports to Entertainment City, a $4 billion bayside casino complex, in minutes. Otherwise it’s accessible only after an hour on ordinary city streets clogged by motorists so angry about traffic that some intentionally drive the wrong way. New roads are good for tourism. By year’s end the country expects upgrades to power plants, energizing parts of the country where business suffers from brownouts (and high rates). Metro Pacific Investments Corp. is lengthening a 22-kilometer light rail by another 11 to ease unbreakable traffic gridlock in Manila. At sea, local port operator International Container Terminal Services Inc. said last year it would spend 3 billion pesos to expand at the otherwise cramped port in Manila.

Some country in Asia is always growing crazily on factory investment and a strong consumer base. Then when the West gets to idolizing it, the place slips. Japan is just now testing emergence from 20 years of sloth after a roaring 1980s that worried competitive Americans. China’s growth is slowing year by year to what the Beijing government calls a “new norm.” Vietnam goes on and off the watch list. Now comes the Philippines, an icon of consumption-crazed Southeast Asia where wages are low and people eager for jobs with multinationals.

Here are five reasons the Philippine economy will grow:

Corruption is down. The country known for brazen acts of graft such as a scheme that diverted millions of anti-poverty dollars to legislators has cut back corruption under President Benigno Aquino III. Since he took office in 2010, transparency of government work is up and kickbacks down as people monitor one another, using social media for ratting some of the dirt out. Graft busting is hard to quantify but saving the public money, says Jonathan Ravelas, first vice president with the Banco de Oro treasury group in Manila. “People try to be very careful in how they do things,” he says. “(Graft) has gone down significantly, but it’s still there. It’s a work in progress and it will take time.”

John Fairfax lived an exciting life filled with danger and adventure. At 13, he temporarily left home and went to live alone in the jungle. He survived by hunting wild animals and selling their pelts for supplies. At age 20, a troubled Fairfax wanted to kill himself, and he made the odd choice of using a jaguar attack as his preferred suicide method. He waited patiently in the jungle for a jaguar to attack him but also kept a revolver close in case he changed his mind. And he did. Right when a jaguar pounced, Fairfax shot it. He then sold its pelt. Later, when he was finally looking for a serious job, he found one as an apprentice . . . to a pirate. Therefore, his next years were spent mostly as a smuggler, although he did actually learn navigational skills as a result of his apprenticeship.

None of those is the main reason why Fairfax is remembered today, though. On January 20, 1969, Fairfax set off on his own from the Canary Islands in a boat. On July 19, he arrived in Florida, becoming the first person to row across an ocean solo.

Fairfax became the talk of the town, but only for a day. His bad timing didn’t allow him to bask in the adulation of the media because the very next day, something truly historic was happening. On July 20, 1969, all of humanity was watching as the Apollo 11 astronauts became the first humans to walk on the Moon. -- http://listverse.com/
