Ilan Halimi
#8705
History / Re: The Affair of the Gang of Barbarians
April 16, 2015, 03:55:00 PM
Halimi was found naked, handcuffed, and bound with nylon rope to a tree about 40 yards (37 metres) inside a woodlot near a railway station, just outside Paris, on February 13, 2006. It was reported that more than 80% of his body had been burned with acid, as well as gasoline (possibly to destroy evidence of his captors' DNA), to the point that he was difficult to recognize. He had severe contusions, blood blisters, and hematomas covering most of his body (to the point that he was more blue than flesh-colored), multiple broken bones, one ear and one big toe missing. Most of his penis appeared to have been burned off, and his testicles were described as " like blackened oranges."
Halimi died en route to a hospital.

A woman, referred to as Audrey L., turned herself in after the police had released a photo-fit picture. She pointed to the Barbarians, a gang of African and North African immigrants who had perpetrated similar abductions in the past. In the subsequent days, French police arrested 15 persons in connection with the crime. The leader of the gang, Youssouf Fofana, fled to his parents' homeland of Côte d'Ivoire with the woman used as bait. They were arrested on February 23 in Abidjan and extradited to France on March 4, 2006.

Timeline of the crime

According to press reports based on information from French criminal investigation authorities, as of February 25, 2006, the crime was believed to have happened as follows:

On January 20, 2006, Ilan Halimi was lured by an attractive seventeen-year-old girl who called herself Yalda (of French-Iranian origin), to an apartment block in the Parisian banlieues.
There Halimi was overwhelmed by a youth gang and kept prisoner for twenty-four days.

Halimi was initially guarded by four teenagers. During the following three-week period, his kidnappers, at least 19 of them, beat him all over his body, especially his testicles, completely wrapping his head in duct tape, except for his mouth, so he could breathe and eat through a straw, stabbing him, burning his body and face with acid, cigarettes and lighters. They also tried to extract a ransom (initially of 450,000 Euros) from his family.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The affair of the Gang of Barbarians (in French: l'affaire du gang des barbares), was a kidnapping and torture case that gripped and shocked France both because of the fear of resurgence of antisemitism (because the crime was motivated by antisemitism and money and also because of the vicious nature of the crime committed.

A total of 27 people were accused as implicated in the crime and were tried for kidnapping and murder in 2009. Gang leader Youssouf Fofana (born 1980 in Paris to immigrants from Côte d'Ivoire) was convicted and sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole for 22 years. Others received shorter prison sentences, some suspended, and three were acquitted. While Fofana's life sentence was definite, 14 of the 27 verdicts were appealed by the prosecution. The convictions were upheld on appeal in December 2010.

The Science of Near-Death Experiences
Empirically investigating brushes with the afterlife
By Gideon Lichfield

Near-death experiences have gotten a lot of attention lately. The 2014 movie Heaven Is for Real, about a young boy who told his parents he had visited heaven while he was having emergency surgery, grossed a respectable $91 million in the United States. The book it was based on, published in 2010, has sold some 10 million copies and spent 206 weeks on the New York Times best-seller list. Two recent books by doctorsâ€"Proof of Heaven, by Eben Alexander, who writes about a near-death experience he had while in a week-long coma brought on by meningitis, and To Heaven and Back, by Mary C. Neal, who had her NDE while submerged in a river after a kayaking accidentâ€"have spent 94 and 36 weeks, respectively, on the list. (The subject of The Boy Who Came Back From Heaven, published in 2010, recently admitted that he made it all up.)

Their stories are similar to those told in dozens if not hundreds of books and in thousands of interviews with “NDErs,” or “experiencers,” as they call themselves, in the past few decades. Though details and descriptions vary across cultures, the overall tenor of the experience is remarkably similar. Western near-death experiences are the most studied. Many of these stories relate the sensation of floating up and viewing the scene around one’s unconscious body; spending time in a beautiful, otherworldly realm; meeting spiritual beings (some call them angels) and a loving presence that some call God; encountering long-lost relatives or friends; recalling scenes from one’s life; feeling a sense of connectedness to all creation as well as a sense of overwhelming, transcendent love; and finally being called, reluctantly, away from the magical realm and back into one’s own body. Many NDErs report that their experience did not feel like a dream or a hallucination but was, as they often describe it, “more real than real life.” They are profoundly changed afterward, and tend to have trouble fitting back into everyday life. Some embark on radical career shifts or leave their spouses.

The court said Napoles detained her former aide to prevent him from disclosing information about the pork barrel scam.

Napoles said Luy misappropriated around P5 million using her name. She also alleged that Luy stole money from her.

The court said Lim held Luy for three months in a house located at 52 Lapu-Lapu street, Magallanes Village, Makati on orders of Napoles.

The Makati RTC started hearing the serious illegal detention case filed by Luy against Napoles on Aug. 6, 2013.

The court denied her petition for bail on Nov. 21, 2013.

Napoles went into hiding when news of the pork barrel scam broke. She surrendered to President Aquino in Malacañang and was detained at Fort Sto. Domingo, Laguna. She was later transferred to Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig.

The scam allegedly operated by Napoles involved the diversion of billions of pesos in Priority Development Assistance Fund of lawmakers to fake non-government organizations and bogus projects.

Napoles is facing separate graft charges before the Sandiganbayan.

Sens. Juan Ponce Enrile, Jinggoy Estrada and Bong Revilla are among the government officials detained on plunder charges in connection with the pork barrel scam.

Philippine Star â€" 15 hours ago

A Makati City court yesterday sentenced businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles to life imprisonment for the serious illegal detention of pork barrel scam whistle-blower Benhur Luy.

Judge Elmo Alameda of the Makati Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 150 also ordered Napoles to pay Luy P100,000 in civil and moral damages.

Napoles’ brother and co-accused, Reynald Lim, remains at large.

“The prosecution was able to establish that Luy was illegally detained from Dec. 19, 2012 to March 22, 2013,” the judge said in his 26-page decision.

Man Enlarged His Penis So Much He Struggles To Have Intercourse And Urinates Sitting Down

Micha-Stunz
news.jumpfon.com

A man from Berlin in Germany who was so obsessed with his penis that he enlarged it with silicone says he struggles to have “normal” sex and urinates sitting down.

Micha Stunz, 45, from Germany, now has a nine inch-long penis which weighs between 7.5 and 9.5 pounds thanks to numerous procedures he underwent from the age of 25.

In speaking to reporters about the weight of his enhanced member, Stunz said, “I can’t say exactly how much it weighs, I just know that my kitchen scale, which shows up to 6.6lb, hasn’t been enough for a while.”

Nevertheless, according to Stunz, he had the work done on his penis not to make him more aesthetic, but rather because it makes him feel “better” about himself.

Sadly, the silicon implants make sex almost impossible for Stunz. He is unable to achieve a normal erection because his penis remains the same size at all times due to the silicon.

In speaking about what he gets up to in the bedroom, Stunz shared, “After you reach a certain size, you can’t do certain things any more. At least not with everyone and not without some foreplay. But there are other things you can do with it. You just have to free yourself from established roles and ideas about sex and be ready to play.”

It all started for Stunz around 20 years ago when he received a penis pump as a present.

As he explained, “I was way too curious not to try it out. First, I tried it secretly for myself. And I found that when I went out pumped up, it was a good feeling, it felt great. I had the feeling that I wasn’t trapped in the body I was born with, but that I had the possibility to shape it myself to change it.”

It was at this point that he discovered saline injections, which he gave himself regularly. He added, “The feeling was great. but I didn’t like getting the injections- there’s always a risk of infection.”

A urologist from Berlin, Dr. Aref el Seweife, said that penis enlargements with silicone are not recommended. “In worst cases, it can lead to an enlarged artery in the scrotum and the testicles die.”

That advice from Dr. Seweife doesn’t bother Stunz much though, as he continues to enlarge his penis despite the effect it has had on his sex life.

History / Billy the Kid
April 13, 2015, 01:51:40 PM
Billy the Kid (1859 â€" 1881}

This is the only indisputable photo of Billy the Kid and is said to be taken in January 1880 in front of Beaver Smith’s saloon gambling hall in Fort Sumner, New Mexico Territory. Billy the Kid also known by the aliases Henry Antrim and William H. Bonney was a 19th-century American frontier outlaw and gunman. He was relatively unknown during his own lifetime but became a legend a year after his death when his killer, Sheriff Patrick Garrett published a biography titled The Authentic Life of Billy the Kid. According to legend Billy the Kid killed 21 men, one for each year of his life but he most likely killed fewer than half that number.

Interesting Fact:: While Billy the Kid was right-handed it was widely assumed that he was left-handed. This belief stemmed from the fact that the only known photograph at that time showed him with a Winchester rifle in his right hand and a gun belt with a holster on his left side where a left-handed person would typically wear a pistol. The belief became so entrenched that in 1958 a biographical film was made about Billy the Kid called The Left Handed Gun starring Paul Newman. In 1986 the original photo came to light and showed that the first one that was found was the same photo but actually a reverse tintype image. This led to the myth that Kid was left handed. -- http://listverse.com/

Kini gidumala sa Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Melbourne: How do some people turn killers and have no guilt about their actions? That's due to a brain mechanism that justifies killings, says a study.

The neural mechanisms that are typically implicated with harming others become less active when the violence against a particular group is seen as justified, the study found.

"The findings show that when a person is responsible for what they see as justified or unjustified violence, they will have different feelings of guilt associated with that," said lead researcher Pascal Molenberghs from Monash University.

"For the first time, we can see how this guilt relates to specific brain activation," he said.

Participants in the study played video games in which they imagined themselves to be shooting innocent civilians (unjustified violence) or enemy soldiers (justified violence).

Their brain activity was recorded via functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while they played.

Molenberghs said the results provided important insights into how people in certain situations, such as war, are able to commit extreme violence against others.

"When participants imagined themselves shooting civilians compared to soldiers, greater activation was found in the lateral orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), an important brain area involved in making moral decisions," Molenberghs said."The more guilt participants felt about shooting civilians, the greater the response in the lateral OFC.

"When shooting enemy soldiers, no activation was seen in lateral OFC," he noted.

The results show that the neural mechanisms that are typically implicated with harming others become less active when the violence against a particular group is seen as justified, the study found. It was published in the journal Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (also known as Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens) is an upcoming American epic space opera film directed by J. J. Abrams. The seventh installment in the Star Wars film series (excluding spin-offs), it stars John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow, with Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker reprising roles from previous films. The story is set approximately 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi (1983).

The Force Awakens will be the first film in the planned third Star Wars trilogy announced after The Walt Disney Company's acquisition of Lucasfilm in October 2012. It is produced by Abrams, his long-time collaborator Bryan Burk, and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. Abrams directed the film from a screenplay he co-wrote with Lawrence Kasdan, co-writer of the original trilogy films The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Abrams and Kasdan rewrote an initial script by Michael Arndt, who also wrote the story treatment. John Williams returns to compose the score, and Star Wars creator George Lucas serves as creative consultant.

The Force Awakens is produced by Walt Disney Pictures, Lucasfilm and Abrams' Bad Robot Productions, and will be distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Second-unit filming began in April 2014 in Abu Dhabi and Iceland, with principal photography taking place between May and November 2014 in Abu Dhabi, Ireland and Pinewood Studios in England. The Force Awakens is scheduled for release on December 18, 2015.

Inspiration & Hope / Re: Bill Gates and Irri
April 12, 2015, 01:00:35 PM
Time was when the Philippines had preeminence in Southeast Asia not only in rice research and development but also in production, thanks to the Irri. Scientists from Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and other neighboring countries came to study and learn from the institute, and brought home with them new ways of growing the staple crop and creating sustainable ways to improve rice farming and food production in their countries. The Philippines, meanwhile, lost the initiative along the way; by the post-Marcos years it had settled in a most unenviable position: Once a world leader in rice production, it now had to import rice to feed its population. By 2008 it had become the world’s largest importer of rice, buying 1.8 million tons from countries it had once mentored on the subject. A cruel irony, and just one more affliction on a country that can’t seem to get its act together after the ravages of the Marcos dictatorship.

Gates’ staunch support for the Irri should help reboot the government’s efforts, if any, for national rice sufficiency. The institute jump-started the “Green Revolution” in Asia that saved tens of millions of people from hunger and disease. What are the bright minds in government doing to access that deep, invaluable knowledge to get us out of our chronic rice deficiency?

The reticence is understandable. All that money and the corresponding influence that goes with it make Gates a tempting target for criminal minds or syndicates preying on the wealthy and well-connected. Ensuring his safety and security is paramount, and heaven forbid that anything untoward should happen to the famous billionaire tech visionary while on Philippine soil.

On the other hand, the self-effacement also seems typical of the Microsoft founder and philanthropist, who has visibly eschewed the trappings of international celebrity to focus his attention, and the billions of dollars at his disposal, on more urgent, earthbound concerns such as trying to end hunger, disease and illiteracy in many parts of the planet. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which he cofounded with his wife in 2000, has an endowment of $42.3 billion as of November 2014, and he himself has donated more than $28 billion so far to the philanthropic organization.

Gates’ visit to the Philippines, and to the Irri in particular, may be explained by the fact that his foundation is said to be the single biggest private donor to it. Some $18 million of the Irri’s annual budget of $100 million comes from the Gates Foundation. That annual budget may surprise some: That big? But, unknown to the younger generations of Filipinos, as well as Asians who have grown up on better and healthier varieties of rice developed at the Irri, “the world’s premier research organization dedicated to reducing poverty and hunger through rice science” (as it describes itself) now has offices in 17 countries. Its headquarters in Los Baños is but the global base of a humanitarian scientific endeavor that has seen the Irri, since its founding in 1960, bring its mottoâ€"“Rice Science for a Better World”â€"to diverse places where the grain serves as the staple food to billions of people, from Bangladesh in Asia to Burundi in Africa.

Manila’s political and party crowds must be sore at Bill Gates. The world’s wealthiest man ($79.2 billion in 2015, up from $76 billion last year, according to Forbes magazine) is said to have flown in on April 4, but without the hoopla usually associated with celebrities and world figures who touch down in this part of the world. Gates’ visit was devoid of any announcement or even advance word to Malacañang; he did not meet with President Aquino or other political figures, did not hobnob with the usual suspects in local high society, was not seen in the metro’s default ritzy places where the country’s elite would have typically feted him, basked in the trails of his oxygen, and claimed him as one of their own.

In fact, no photo of him in Philippine surroundings has surfaced; he is reportedly on holiday in the exclusive Amanpulo resort in Palawan with his family, and has made a side trip to the International Rice Research Institute in Los Baños, Laguna. But the entire trip has been kept under wraps so well, and his entourage and security personnel drilled to a uniform tight-lipped silence, that all that the media could rely on to confirm the buzz about his visit are the official immigration records and the flight logs of his private plane and helicopter rides.

MAN VOLUNTEERS FOR WORLD'S FIRST HEAD TRANSPLANT
Despite detractors, the patient has faith in his surgeon.

BY MIKE MAHARDY

A Russian man with a terminal illness is ready to undergo the world's first human-head transplant as early as next year.

Valery Spiridinov, a 30-year-old computer scientist from Vladimir, Russia, told the Daily Mail that he has full faith in the controversial Dr. Sergio Canavero, the Italian physician many medical professionals are criticizing for his radical views. Canavero recently said he thinks modern science can support a head-transplant procedure, and has been working to gather funds and resources.

'Am I afraid?" Spridinov said. "Yes, of course I am. But it is not just very scary, but also very interesting." Spiridinov was born with the rare Werdnig-Hoffmann muscle-wasting disease, a severe category of spinal muscular atrophy. He said he wants to take his chance at having a healthy body before he dies. "My decision is final and I do not plan to change my mind."

Spiridinov and Dr. Canavero have spoken over Skype, but have yet to meet each other in person. Despite Canavero's many detractors, Spiridinov said he trusts the physician to carry out the 36-hour operation, which touts an estimated cost of £7.5 million (11 million USD).

"But you have to understand that I don't really have many choices," he said. "If I don't try this chance my fate will be very sad. With every year my state is getting worse."

Werdnig-Hoffmann disease is characterized by muscle weakness and lack of motor development, while more severe cases can often have trouble swallowing or even breathing. For Spridinov, who was diagnosed at age 1, the disease progresses every day.

"I can hardly control my body now," he said. "I need help every day, every minute. I am now 30 years old, although people rarely live to more than 20 with this disease. If you want something to be done, you need to participate in it."

Photo credit: Massoud Hossaini via The Pulitzer Prizes

Afghanistan-born photographer Massoud Hossaini won the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography. His photograph was that of 12-year-old Afghan girl Tarana Akbari, who was screaming just after a suicide explosion which killed more than 70 people, including seven members of her family. Her family along with several others had gone to Kabul to observe the Ashura festival, one of the holiest days observed by Shia Muslims. The festival is meant to commemorate the A.D. 680 murder of Imam Ali, a grandson of the prophet Muhammad.

The worshippers had crowded at the Abul Fazl shrine to celebrate when a lone suicide bomber detonated explosives in his backpack. Massoud was at the scene when the bomb went off and had even been injured in the explosion, which was even condemned by the Taliban. Massoud had taken photographs at the yearly Ashura festival for 10 years and had not been expecting anything unusual. What makes Massoud’s photograph stand out is that, unlike other photographs that were usually taken well after the main event had occurred, this one was taken immediately after; Massoud was there, after all. -- http://listverse.com/

Hi Prof,

Amping!  â€" Prof. Tata Swami  D' Swami (Descendant of Professor Swami)

Most people don’t give much thought to grazing cows, but when a team of scientists went through thousands of Google Earth’s satellite images of cows, they stumbled upon a detail that we have missed for millennia: Cows will stand along the Earth’s magnetic polesâ€"facing north and southâ€"whenever they’re grazing or resting. The pattern remained consistent regardless of wind or other factors, and nobody’s quite sure why.

While some animals are known to contain an internal compass, this is the first time it’s been found in a large mammal. Another weird thing is that the nearer they are to the poles, the less accurate they get with the orientation. Scientists don’t know if the phenomenon is related to navigation or some miscalculated attempt at warding off predators, though it appears that it may have a purpose because of the consistency with which it was observed among cows across six continents. The phenomenon may have an effect on agricultural production, as cows made to stay in an east-west orientation must be affected in some way, though nobody can say how. -- http://listverse.com/
