(AP)â€"The Los Angeles Lakers’ victory in Boston in the NBA finals earned the highest television ratings for a Game 3 since 2004.

The Lakers’ 91-84 win earned an 11.5 overnight rating, 14 percent better than the Lakers and Orlando posted in Game 3 last year. It was the highest-rated show on television Tuesday night, helping ABC win primetime.

Ratings measure the percentage of all homes with televisions tuned into a program. Overnight ratings represent the country’s largest markets.

KC Concepcion may be a member of a showbiz “royalty,” but a lot of people say she performed unsatisfactorily as host in the launching interview with newcomer Queenie Padilla who happens to be another “royaltyl”.

They say KC failed to focus  on her subject to draw more information in an easy, fun and spontaneous way.

KC kept on telling Queenie to call her by name and not use the Filipino word “po” or “ate.” 

Worse, obviously feeling conscious of the age difference between her and Queenie, KC almost faltered in between questions losing spontaneity and fun thereby rendering the interview dry and uninteresting.

(Reuters) â€" Japanese exports rose more than expected in April from a year earlier, a sign that brisk demand from Asia underpins the country's fragile economic recovery.

The euro's weakness triggered by the European debt crisis had little effect on shipments to the region, although analysts warn the effect may be gradually felt if the crisis is prolonged.

Exports rose 40.4 percent in April from a year earlier, more than a median market forecast of a 38.9 percent increase and the fifth straight month of gains, trade balance data released by the Ministry of Finance showed.

''Exports remain very firm even after very strong growth in January-March. The pace of export growth will slow in April-June, but we expect exports to continue to expand,'' said Azusa Kato, an economist at BNP Paribas in Tokyo.

Exports to Asia, which account for more than half of Japan's total exports, rose 45.3 percent from a year earlier, while those to the United States were up 34.5 percent.

The camps of Manny Pacquiao and Bob Arum are not taking seriously the announcement of Floyd Mayweather Jr. last Sunday that he’s taking a self-imposed one-year leave from boxing.

But if indeed Mayweather is determined to take a hiatus despite the proposed super showdown with Pacquiao on November 13, Arum will have no choice but to look elsewhere for a new foe for the Filipino boxing icon.

One of those being considered is Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto, who just won the World Boxing Association (WBA) junior middleweight title Saturday night (yesterday in Manila) in New York’s Yankee Stadium by knocking out champion Yuri Foreman.

Others who may be picked to faceoff with Pacquiao are Antonio Margarito and Juan Manuel Marquez, sports analyst Ronnie Nathanielsz said.

Edward dela Cruz, the younger brother of actress Angelika dela Cruz, died in a vehicular accident on June 7. He was 28.

An online report said the accident occured in the San Simon section of the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX). Apparently, Edward’s Nissan Urvan was hit from behind by a truck. Another vehicle, a Kia Besta, was also rear-ended by the same truck.

The Besta’s driver and a teenage passenger were hurt and rushed to the hospital in San Fernando, Pampanga. However, Edward had been killed instantlyâ€"reportedly dead on arrival when brought to the nearest hospital.

Tracy Baky, Angelika’s road manager, told Bulletin Entertainment that as of 2:40 p.m. today, the actress was “still in Pampanga… para kunin ‘yung body.”

Reports have it that upon learning of the accident, Angelika asked Tracy to cancel schedules for the day including a scheduled taping for GMA-7’s “Pilyang Kerubin.”

"Twilight” actress Kristen Stewart has apologized for making a series of “stupid” and “insensitive” comments about rape â€" admitting she “made an enormous mistake.”

The 20-year-old actress sparked a storm of controversy with her remarks in a recent interview with Britain’s Elle magazine, in which she likened the media intrusion in her life to sexual assault. She told the magazine, “I feel like I’m looking at someone being raped. A lot of the time I can’t handle it. I never expected that this would be my life.”

"Pinoy Big Brother"’s Kuya blew his top when PBB Teen Clash 2010 housemates Ivan Dorschner and Ann Li locked lips in one episode of the top rating ABS-CBN reality show.

“Housemates, lahat kayo, pumasok kayo sa confession room. Everybody, now!” Kuya angrily roared at everyone who was involved in the said game.

Ivan and Ann kissed each other on the lips on a dare while playing a spin-the-bottle game. The two did so in full sight of fellow housemates.

The kiss was reportedly instigated by teen housemate Joe Vargas. Originally, the plan was for the two (Ivan and Ann) to kiss with a tissue placed on their lips. But the two went on to kiss without the tissue.

The controversial kiss between Ivan and Ann has made the rounds in YouTube and Facebook.

Hunk actor Dingdong Dantes refuses to comment about being considered for a government position for the incoming Aquino administration.

An official offer is yet to be made by soon-to-be president-elect Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, who in a previous interview revealed his desire to appoint Dingdong in a youth-centered post.

Albeit flattered, the Kapuso star told “24 Oras” on June 8: “Bago ko buksan ang isang bagay na ‘yan, kailangan talaga munang mapag-usapan nang maayos ‘yan. Like I said, ayokong magkaron ng premature statement about that because it is a very important and delicate subject eh so siyempre gusto kong maging handa sa mga ganyang bagay, kung sakali mang sasagutin ko siya.”

The 29-year old chairman of the youth-oriented Yes Pinoy Foundation said that for the meantime, he will concentrate working on his showbiz projects, including a film and his new drama series with real-life sweetheart Marian Rivera, “Endless Love.”

Malacañang assured Wednesday that the government has readied contingency measures amid reports Taal Volcano has shown signs of unrest.

Executive Secretary Leandro Mendoza said the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) and other concerned government agencies have been mobilized to monitor Taal’s volcanic activity and prepare the necessary evacuation plans in case of an eruption.

“The NDCC has been on its toes since the onset of the rainy season. As a matter of fact, we got a briefing on the preparations, the contingencies of the different agencies involved in disaster operation and of course we were of the impression and we believe the report that the government is ready,” Mendoza said in a news conference in the Palace.

A drug company introduced Wednesday a vaccine meant to prevent children from dying due to pneumococcal disease, said to kill over two million children each year, according to international health authorities.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has considered pneumococcal disease as the number one vaccine-preventable cause of death among children below five.

The other day, Pfizer launched a new vaccine that covers against 13 serotypes of the bacteria, Streptococcus pneumoniae that causes illnesses such as sepsis, meningitis and pneumonia.

Prevenar 13 was recently approved by the US food and drug administration and is now being licensed by the country’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The vaccine will also benefit the non-vaccinated population and even adults, experts said.

“In the US, when the children get the vaccine, it also stopped transmission among adults. Kids were the key. Adult disease went down by 92 percent. You protect the whole community and this is called herd community,” said Dr. Keith Klugman, professor of global health, Rolin School of Public Health and professor of medicine.

The Office of the Ombudsman (OMB) has suspended for six months without pay nine officials of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for allegedly paying a construction firm in 2005 even before funds were officially released.

In an 11-page decision signed by Ombudsman Merceditas Navarro-Gutierrez, the respondents were identified as former regional director and now undersecretary Jaime Pacanan and former Director III Celso Lumaniog.

The two officials were originally penalized only with reprimand but Gutierrez modified the ruling of her subordinates and imposed the six-month suspension.

"The respondents are guilty of conduct prejudicial to the best interest of the service and meted out the penalty of six months suspension from the service without pay," Gutierrez ruled.

Also suspended for six months were engineers Baltazar Ausa, Francisco Venigas Jr., Cristina Buena and Eduardo Pellas, administrative officer Erda Gabriana, senior bookkeeper Maria Regina Verzosa, and special agent Tomas Fabillo Jr. from the DPWH office in Tacloban City.

Barangay officials arrested a woman who they said was caught conducting an abortion on a 22-year-old who was four months pregnant last Tuesday afternoon in Quezon City.

Investigator SPO1 Rodrigo Barrameda Jr. identified the suspected abortionist as Marilyn Torres, 47, a resident of No. 27 Gitna St., Kaingin Bukid, Apolonio Samson, Quezon City.

Barrameda said that Torres was arrested by barangay public safety officers (BPSOs) after they said they caught her conducting an abortion on Catherine Castro, 22, married, a resident of 1356 Gana Compound, Barangay Unang Sigaw, Balintawak, Quezon City.

The investigator also learned that Castro paid Torres P2,000 for the abortion even though she was already four months pregnant.

Barangay watchmen confiscated at the house of Torres items used in the abortion including surgical gloves, two empty wrapper of Cytotic tablets, two empty wrappers of Naproxen.

Acting Justice Secretary Alberto C. Agra has ordered an automatic review of dismissed cases involving drugs.

Agra issued Department Circular No. 39 for the “automatic review of dismissed cases involving Republic Act No. 9165 (Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002).”

Under the circular dated June 7, 2010, the dismissal of all cases by the chief state prosecutor, regional state prosecutors, provincial and city prosecutors, whether on inquest, preliminary investigation, reinvestigation or on appeal, filed for violation of R.A. No. 9165 and involving the maximum penalty of life imprisonment to death, will be subject to automatic review by the justice secretary.

The circular said the entire records of the case will be elevated to the justice secretary within three days from issuance of the resolution dismissing the complaint or appeal.

Senator Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Aquino III and Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay were proclaimed on Wednesday as the duly elected president and vice president, respectively, by the Joint Congressional National Canvassing Committee.

Aquino was proclaimed the country’s 15th President ahead of the projected June 15 proclamation schedule after garnering 15,208,678 votes in the country’s first automated national elections. He will start his term together with members of the 15th Congress.

Before the proclamation, Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada stood on the floor to read the congratulatory message of his father, former President Joseph Estrada who placed second to Aquino in the presidential race.

Earlier, Malacañang extended its congratulatory message to Aquino and Binay, wishing them all the best as they take the reins of the country starting June 30.

Executive Secretary Leandro Mendoza congratulated the new government leaders, adding the outgoing Arroyo administration is ready to facilitate a smooth transition of power.

Shahram Amiri disappeared a year ago while on a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia.

A video broadcast by Iranian TV purports to show Mr Amiri saying he was kidnapped and is living in Arizona.

The Philippine Long Distance Telecom Co. (PLDT) topped the short list of leading companies in the country in the Forbes Magazine's latest roster of the world’s top 2,000 firms.

Only three companies in the Philippines made it into the top 2,000 , according to the May 2010 issue of Forbes Asia Magazine: PLDT (ranked No. 1,080), San Miguel (No. 1,566) and SM Investments (SMIC) (No. 1,707). PLDT also topped the short list of Philippine companies in last year’s list, where it ranked No. 1,138.

Forbes, one of the world's leading business magazines, used several metrics that combined sales, profits, assets and market value in order to rank companies worldwide and to come up with its Global 2000 list. The approach provides a more thorough and holistic assessment of companies.

“This year’s list reveals the dynamism of global business. The rankings span 62 countries, with the US (515 members) and Japan (210 members) still dominating the list, but with a combined 33 fewer entries," according to Forbes.com, the magazine’s website.

PLDT Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan remarked that PLDT's ranking in this global list "reflects the commitment of its shareholders and the dedication of its management and staff to world-class excellence."

"This recognition highlights our efforts to transform PLDT into communications and multimedia company," added PLDT President and CEO Napoleon L. Nazareno.

Apple unveiled a next-generation iPhone on Monday that features video chat, can shoot and edit high-definition quality video, and has a crisper resolution screen.

“We are going to take the biggest leap since the original iPhone,” Apple chief executive Steve Jobs said as he showed off the “iPhone 4” at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference here.

The iPhone 4 will go on sale on June 24 in Britain, France, Germany, Japan, and the United States and will cost 199 dollars for the 16 gigabyte model and 299 dollars for the 32GB version.

The touchscreen smartphone, which comes in black and white versions, will be available in 18 other countries in July and 24 more in August.

The iPhone 4 includes more than 100 new features including a front-facing video camera to allow for video-conferencing between iPhones, a better still camera, an improved battery, and a screen with significantly higher resolution.

To demonstrate the video chat program, called “FaceTime,” Jobs, dressed in his trademark black turtleneck and blue jeans, called up Jonathan Ive, an Apple product designer, and held an iPhone-to-iPhone video conversation.- afp

The camp of Liberal Party (LP) vice presidential bet Senator Manuel Roxas II said on Tuesday it is planning to file a protest before the presidential electoral tribunal so the almost three million nullified votes for vice president would be counted.

The Roxas camp had pushed for a random manual audit of the null votes for vice president because of the close race between the LP bet and Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay. Roxas trailed Binay by some 600,000 votes last Monday night with only votes from Lanao Del Sur yet to be refelected in the official canvass.

Joey Tenefrancia, counsel for Roxas, said that his camp would wait for the final report of the House joint canvassing committee "before making any statement on the whole process." - manila bulletin

He turned out to be his closest rival for the presidency, but the campaign team of President-apparent Sen. Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Aquino III said former President Joseph Estrada might have contributed to the successful presidential bid of the only son of the late President Corazon Aquino and Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr.

Looking back, Chito Gascon, director general of the Liberal Party (LP), admitted that Estrada's decision to run might have hurt other candidates, particularly Nacionalista Party (NP) standard-bearer Sen. Manuel Villar who appeared to be the survey-favorite and Aquino's toughest rival for the presidency during the early part of the campaign.

Gascon said they had difficulty handling Estrada's case since Aquino's advocacy concerns the battle against corruption â€" an issue sensitive to the deposed president who was ousted from power on corruption charges.

“Mayroon kaming ilang issues na gustong patingkarin kaugnay kay GMA (Gloria Macapagal Arroyo) pero sabit din siya (Estrada). Pero ayaw naman rin naming sabihin nating ma-antagonize dahil sa totoo lang nakatulong yung kaniyang  pagkakandidatura para pambawas ng boto ng ibang kandidato,” said Gascon, who was a guest in the “Tonight with Arnold Clavio” show in QTV Channel 11 Monday night.

Starting this coming school year, nobody is allowed to smoke cigarettes or tobacco products inside the school premises.

The announcement was made after the Department of Education (DepEd) instructed all principals and school heads to prohibit smoking inside the campus including open or covered spaces around school buildings.

Education Secretary Mona Valisno said the DepEd order No. 73 or “Smoking Ban in Public Schools” which was released in June 4, ordered public schools to ban smoking in public schools effective immediately.

“There have been existing DepEd orders on smoking ban but with this, we want to affirm that the schools â€" including the students, teachers, and non-teaching staff â€" are covered,” she said.

Valisno ensured that the DepEd will be strict in implementing the smoking ban in all school premises “to protect our school children from inhaling second hand smoke.”

Wi-Fi is everywhere.

Or so it seems until you really need it and there is no coffee house with a free hot spot. Or when you don’t want to pay a fee to connect at the airport or a hotel for an hour.

Our pockets and bags are filling with Web-connected devices: laptops, smartphones, netbooks, tablets, e-readers and even cameras. But to connect one when Wi-Fi is not available means using a cellphone network, and that usually requires buying a new data plan for each device.

The cost-cutting solution might be to create your own Wi-Fi hot spot, a cloud of Internet connectivity for wherever you go. Not only can a personal hot spot provide a single point of access for all of your devices, it can be shared with friends.

The options are growing. You can buy a simple, slim unit that fits in a pocket or ones that can shift from 3G to speedier 4G networks. You can convert some cellphones into hot spots, while a few new phones now come with hot spots included. I tried several such options while traveling and in my daily routine to see what they offered.

The Novatel MiFi 2200, available from Verizon Wireless ($29.99 with a two-year contract) or Sprint (free after $50 rebate and with a two-year contract), is a Wi-Fi hot spot small enough to slip into a shirt pocket. It is a mysterious-looking object with no screen and a single button.

It wirelessly connects to a 3G cellular network just like a phone, but it also broadcasts a Wi-Fi signal to the surrounding area. Devices within a 30-foot range can connect. I used the MiFi while traveling by car from Boston to New York. Having the coverage brought peace of mind when using Google Maps on my iPod Touch and my laptop to guide me around Brooklyn. - press release
