Homo naledi has a mixture of primitive and more modern features

Scientists have discovered a new human-like species in a burial chamber deep in a cave system in South Africa.

The discovery of 15 partial skeletons is the largest single discovery of its type in Africa.

The researchers claim that the discovery will change ideas about our human ancestors.

Etter helped the family to the main city of Kos, where refugees are processed by the Greek authorities, but later lost track of them.

Nada Adel, an English teacher in Syria, said 13 governments had offered to take them but they had decided on Germany. “Angela Merkel is very good,” she said. “She is like a mother for us.”

Merkel, the German chancellor, has said refugees from Syria can apply for asylum in Germany, rather than the first EU country they arrive in.

The family said seven-year-old Nour still has nightmares about their night spent crossing the water. “We’ll never go back to sea,” Majid told Bild.

Majid and his family had fled Islamic State in Deir Ezzor, a Syrian city beset by civil war violence since 2011, before boarding a flimsy inflatable raft â€" built for four people but carrying 12 â€" to Kos. They paid US$6,500 for the perilous trip across the water.

Daniel Etter, the photographer who took the image for the New York Times, reported: “When the boat landed, a middle-aged man got out. He was visibly shaken, and had a hard time walking. When all his family finally reached the safety of the beach, he and his wife broke down in tears, hugging every single one of their children.”

The Facebook group Europe says Oxi posted a picture of the family in Berlin, smiling and laughing in sharp contrast to the images that last month prompted awareness of the mounting crisis as refugees headed for Europe’s borders.

The family are reported to be staying in Spandau, in the former Schmidt-Knobelsdorf police barracks, which have been adapted to house hundreds of refugees who have made their way to Germany.

Syrian man pictured crying as his family landed in Greece finds refuge in Germany

Laith Majid and his family have arrived in Berlin, after images of the father tearfully clutching his children sparked awareness of Europe’s refugee crisis

A Syrian man who was pictured weeping as he and his family reached the Greek island of Kos last month has arrived in Berlin, it has been reported.

The family â€" Laith Majid, his wife, Nada Adel, their sons Moustafa, aged 18, Ahmed, 17, and Taha, nine, along with seven-year-old daughter Nour â€" travelled for weeks to reach Germany, Bild newspaper said.

BUDAPEST (Reuters) - A camerawoman for a private television channel in Hungary was fired late on Tuesday after videos of her kicking and tripping up migrants fleeing police, including a man carrying a child, spread in the media and on the internet.

In separate videos, the woman, who was not named by the channel, is seen kicking a girl and tripping up the man carrying a child as hundreds of migrants, many of them Syrian refugees, broke away from police on Hungary's southern border with Serbia.

Later that year, Perry Como released a cover of Simon's English version on his album It's Impossible, while Julie Felix had a UK Top 20 hit with it, taking advantage of Simon and Garfunkel's decision not to release their version as a UK single. Simon & Garfunkel did release their version as a single in the U.S., which reached #18 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart and #6 on the Easy Listening chart, in fall 1970. (wikipedia)

El Condor Pasa
Simon and Garfunkel (1970)

In 1965, the American musician Paul Simon heard for the first time a version of the melody by the band Los Incas in a performance at the Théâtre de l'Est parisien in Paris in which both were participating. Simon became friendly with the group, later touring with them and producing their first American album. He asked the band for permission to use the song in his production, to which the band replied that it was a popular Peruvian melody with arrangement by Jorge Milchberg (director of Los Incas and Urubamba), who had added two notes. Milchberg was registered as the arrangement's co-author, and charged royalties.

In 1970, the Simon & Garfunkel duo covered the Los Incas version, adding some lyrics in English written by Simon under the name El Condor Pasa (If I Could) and using, without permission [citation needed], the instrumental version by Los Incas as the base track. They included the song on the 1970 album Bridge Over Troubled Water. This cover achieved wide international fame. (wikipedia)

The zarzuela included the famous homonymous melody, without lyrics, based on the traditional Andean music of Peru, where it was declared a National Cultural Heritage in 2004. Since then, it has been estimated that around the world, more than 4000 versions of the melody have been produced, along with 300 sets of lyrics. This song is now considered the second national anthem of Peru, with which Peruvians worldwide identify.

The zarzuela is written in prose and consists of one musical play and two acts. In July 2013, the Colectivo Cultural Centenario El Cóndor Pasa cultural association re-edited the original script which had been lost for a period of time, and published it together with a CD containing the recorded dialogues and seven musical pieces. The music from the original score was reconstructed by musicologist Luis Salazar Mejía with the collaboration of musicians Daniel Dorival and Claude Ferrier and the support of cultural promoter Mario Cerrón Fetta, and re-released on November 14, 15 and 16, 2013 at the Teatro UNI in Lima to celebrate its first centenary.

"El cóndor pasa…" is a Peruvian zarzuela (musical play). Its music was composed by Peruvian song writer Daniel Alomía Robles in 1913 and its script was written by Julio de La Paz (pseudonym of the Limenian dramatist Julio Baudouin). The piano arrangement of this play's most famous melody was legally registered on May 3, 1933 by The Edward B. Marks Music Corp. in the Library of Congress, under the number 9643.

It is possibly the best-known Peruvian song worldwide due to a cover version by Simon & Garfunkel in 1970 on their Bridge over Troubled Water album. This cover version is called "El Condor Pasa (If I Could)".

El Cóndor Pasa, Spanish for "The Condor Passes") is an orchestral musical piece from the zarzuela El Cóndor Pasa by the Peruvian composer Daniel Alomía Robles, written in 1913 and based on traditional Andean folk tunes. In 2004, Peru declared this song as part of the national cultural heritage.

Iglesia brouhaha showed Poe a ‘trapo,’ says erstwhile mentor

@inquirerdotnet

Sen. Serge Osmeña III. NOY MORCOSO III/INQUIRER.net FILE PHOTO

Sen. Serge Osmeña on Sunday said Sen. Grace Poe’s lead in presidential polls may be affected after she supported the Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) mass action against the Department of Justice, making her appear to be a traditional politician (trapo).

Speaking on dzIQ, or Radyo Inquirer, Osmeña, who always gave Poe advice, this time offered no help when asked how she could correct her “mistake.”

“She has strategists. She should ask her strategists,” Osmeña said. Poe, he said, had already teamed up with Sen. Francis Escudero against his advice.

“She was wrong there, she appeared to be a trapo,” Osmeña said of Poe’s statement justifying the INC’s five-day mass action that started at the DOJ office and culminated on Edsa.

Poe received flak for saying the politically influential INC was just exercising its rights and Justice Secretary Leila de Lima should explain the merits of the case filed by a former INC minister.

Osmeña reiterated his disapproval of Poe’s team-up with Escudero, saying the latter brings with him “more minuses” than pluses.â€"Christine O. Avendaño

from 'It’s the dictator’s turn to laugh at Binay' by Boying Pimentel:

Yes, Bongbong is not his father; but didn’t Marcos Jr. also say repeatedly that he thought life under Dad the Dictator was pretty much like paradise?

In fact, Marcos Jr. also argued that if only the Filipino nation had not kicked his father out, the Philippines would be like Singapore today.

Which should really make anyone, including Binay, ask: What is this guy smoking?
You mean the Philippines could have become like Singapore, considered one of the least corrupt nations in the world, under a tyrant now considered one of the most corrupt rulers in history?

That doesn’t bother Binay.

They crossed into Austria on foot - the Hungarian buses stopped before reaching the border and they had to walk the final stretch.

There were children and at least one man in a wheelchair.

They were exhausted. Some of them were limping, but many were smiling broadly - relieved to have finally left Hungary.

"Where are we?" one man shouted. "Austria," I replied. "Good," he said.

The final journey of tragic little boys washed up on a Turkish beach: Mother and sons who died in sea tragedy are taken from morgue after heartbroken father says goodbye to the family he couldn't save

The heartbroken father of two young boys whose bodies washed up on the beach in Turkey watched tearfully as their coffins embarked on their final journey.

Little Aylan, three, and Galip Kurdi, five, were on an overcrowded boat filled with refugees fleeing the war in Syria when it capsized shortly into the crossing to the Greek island of Kos.

Both boys died in the sea alongside their mother, Rehan, while their father Abdullah survived. Today the shattered father watched as the coffins of the family he couldn't save left the morgue.

Earlier he had described the horrific moment that his family slipped through his fingers as he screamed for help.

Reception

The Torre de Manila has been considered as an eyesore by its critics, especially heritage conservationists. Critics insists that the building will ruin the sightline of the Rizal Monument in nearby Luneta Park. On June 17, 2015, the Supreme Court issued a temporary restraining order on the construction of the said project.

bworldonline.com photo

A online petition was launched in July 2012 by activist Carlos Celdran, a month after DMCI acquired zoning permit to the land occupied by the Torre de Manila. The building has been termed by critics as Terror de Manila and Pambansang Photobomb (National Photobomb).

The Knights of Rizal also opposed the project.

The building was also alleged to have violated building and zoning regulations. It was reported that the building's floor-to-area ratio is 7.79, exceeding the limit set for buildings in Torre de Manila's location which is 4. (wikipedia)
#8298

Construction

In June 2012, DMCI managed to secure a zoning permit that allows the company to build the Torre de Manila in a lot along Taft Avenue. The planned location of the building is behind the lot previously occupied by the Manila Jai Alai Building. The following month, the Manila city government under Mayor Alfredo Lim, granted a building permit to DMCI. In November 2013, the Manila City Council suspended the building's construction citing zoning violation. The city government by this time is now under Mayor Joseph Estrada.

manilaspeak.com cartoon

After the Manila Zoning Board of Adjustments and Appeals granted DMCI a zoning regulation exemption, the construction of the Torre de Manila continued in January 2014. In the same month, an online campaign against the construction of the high-rise condominium project was launched by tour guide and activist Carlos Celdran, who said that the structure would mar the view of the iconic monument of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal at Luneta.

By September 2014, the building is already 23 percent complete with 19 floors completed.

The turnover of the building is planned in November 2017.

Architecture and design

Torre de Manila is a condominium project of DM Consunji Inc. (DMCI). The building is planned to have 46 floors above ground level, 41 of which is allotted for residential use, 4 of them for podium parking space, and the ground floor for amenities.

According to its developers, the building has a contemporary art deco inspired design.
