YULIN, China â€" It was the night before the summer solstice, and the tables at a streetside food stall here were set for the annual feast: steamed pumpkin, sautéed morning glory, smashed cucumbers and cold-skin rice flour noodles. At the center of each table were the two traditional dishes most essential to the celebration here: fresh lychees and heaping bowls of stewed dog, pungent with ginger, garlic, dried orange peels, bay leaves and fennel.

It is this last dish for which Yulin has become notorious, thanks to an annual dog meat festival that ended Monday, and the locals have heard enough, thank you.

“Why do people always pick on Yulin?” asked Tang Chengfei, 24, a recent university graduate who was sitting at one of the tables. “Haven’t you seen how the Japanese eat live bullfrog sashimi?”

Indeed, it is the perceived hypocrisy of the critics that seems to most annoy residents of this bustling city of seven million in the southern region of Guangxi, which borders Vietnam.

“I understand the other point of view,” Mr. Tang said. “Many people feel a special bond with dogs. But we grew up around dog meat. For us, it’s normal.”

'DECISION UP TO PNOY'

Meanwhile, Belmonte said President Aquino still has the final say over who will be appointed PNP chief.

"That hasn't happened yet and mine is a recommendation based on his track record. The appointing authority has additional obligations to look at all those allegations. One other thing I quoted, I mentioned is the fact that he is relatively younger and will be able to remain in office two or more years," he said.

Espina is set to retire next month while former PNP chief Alan Purisima is set to retire later this year.

Petrasanta served in the Presidential Security Group (PSG) during the term of former President Corazon Aquino, which reportedly made him close to the Aquino sisters.

Other contenders include current PNP deputy chief for operations Deputy Director General Marcelo Garbo, PNP Logistics chief Director Juanito Vaño, and PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group chief Director Benjamin Magalong.
#7610
The Office of the Ombudsman earlier ordered the preventive suspension of Petrasanta and other police officers for their involvement in the missing 1,004 high-powered AK-47 rifles that were allegedly sold to the New People’s Army (NPA).

Petrasanta was also included in the list of officers who were suspended over links to the courier service contract between the PNP and Werfast documentary agency in 2011.

In both cases, Petrasanta was then chief of the PNP Firearms and Explosives Division.

The PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) earlier said it was able to validate information that firearms matching the serial numbers of the licensed AK47s issued to security agencies and a mining company were recovered following encounters between the military and NPA rebels in the Caraga and Western Mindanao regions.

Belmonte defended Petrasanta from his pending case over the alleged sale of high-powered AK-47 rifles to enemies of the government, for which he was suspended.

He said the House already investigated the controversy and could not find proof.

"My own information is - his case had been looked upon by committee of [public order and safety] Jeffrey Ferrer. Pinapatignan ko in which they found nothing to connect with the sale of AK-47 to insurgents. Nakasali nga siya. It's a hurdle he has to go over but as far as I can see...

"It's better to have no 'bahid' but in a politicized situation, all sorts of people get 'bahid' and it's unfair to keep that against them for their entire careers even when their cases have been dismissed or no cases have prospered," he said.

"Sa police, it's almost like a risk that they all face. Obviously, before I recommended him, obviously the committee that will look upon it will have to closely examine that case or any other case. I'm just saying the case has been looked at by House and there was no adverse finding against him."

MANILA - House Speaker  is backing the appointment of Chief Superintendent Raul Petrasanta, Central Luzon regional police chief, as the next Philippine National Police (PNP) chief.

Belmonte said he made the recommendation based on Petrasanta's performance in Quezon City when Belmonte was mayor.

He said that while he is happy with the work of PNP OIC Leonardo Espina, the PNP needs a chief. He confirmed that Petrasanta approached him for a recommendation.

"Unfortunately, he [Espina] could not be named as chief and his time is running short. He will be retiring very soon. As I found out now, there are quite a number of candidates and one of them is Petrasanta. I wasn't even aware he was a candidate. He approached me and sure enough, I know him. He served as station commander in Quezon City and my own recollection, he served well. He has become a regional director," he said.

The Speaker said there were many good police officials when he was mayor of Quezon City.

"When I was mayor of QC, it was really a good time because there were a lot of very good officers who were in rank of major or lieutenant colonel or even captain. Marami sila magaganda. Some of them have gone on. One is General [Leopoldo] Bataoil who is now a congressman. Another is Congressman [Samuel] Pagdilao. They all served during that period. Quite a number more waiting in the wings for their chance to be promoted for their collective professionalism," he said.

Supt. Germano Mallari, Talisay City police chief, said they will file a murder charge this week.

Aside from murder, a charge of physical injuries against Saballa for punching Manilyn’s younger sister, Jessa Lopez, will also be filed.

The Talisay City Fire Department is also contemplating on filing two counts of arson against Saballa.

Manilyn’s husband Victor plans to come home to Cebu on Thursday.

Reached through his Facebook account, Victor, who works in Kuwait, said that his older brother should pay for what he did.

“Maytang madunot siya sa bilanggoan. Pakabayran niya (I hope he rots in jail. He must pay for what he did),” Victor said.

The couple’s four-year-old daughter was reportedly sleeping beside her aunt Jessa in the living room when Alfonso attacked his younger brother’s wife.

Where he hid

Alfonso was arrested by operatives of the Cebu City Public Safety Company (CCPSC) after they received information of his presence from residents there.

“Diha ra kuno siya sa kabukiran, natulog siya sa sapa (He hid in the mountains and slept by the river),” said SPO3 Rodrigo Deveraturda of CCPSC.

When they arrived in the area, Deveraturda said that Alfonso was not around. They checked an abandoned house nearby and found the suspect there.

Deveraturda said that Alfonso was shocked when he saw the police, but he did not resist arrest.

“Gipangutana namo, ‘Ikaw ‘tong si Alfonso Saballa?’ Diretso man siya’g ingon, ‘Yes, sir!’ (We asked him if he was Alfonso Saballa. He replied, ‘Yes, sir!’),” Deveraturda recalled.

Alfonso said it was his plan to surrender to To-ong Barangay Hall, since he is a registered voter there.

Senior Supt. Marciano Batiancela Jr., officer-in-charge of Cebu City Police Office, said he will award and commend the police officers responsible for the arrest.

Alfonso was later turned over to Talisay City Police Station while several charges are being prepared against him.

Plot

Alfonso also confessed that after he fled, he burned a store of his cousin in Campo 4, Talisay City because of a grudge.

“Maayong pangda-uban hurot para usa ra’ng gasto, usa ra’ng pataya, kanang mga nasuko nako (I thought it would be better to burn them all at once, all of them who are mad at me),” Alfonso told reporters.

Police identified the cousin as Jocelyn Dagwayan. The fire was stopped before it destroyed her house and store.

When asked if he had a message for his brother, Manilyn’s husband, who works in Kuwait, Alfonso bowed his head and spoke more slowly.

“Dong, pasaylo-a lang ko, Dong, sa unsa akong nabuhat sa imong asawa, Dong. Tungod ra na sa imong asawa, Dong, nga dili maayo among communication (Forgive me for what I have done to your wife. It’s just because we could not communicate clearly),” Alfonso said.

He said he regretted what he did to Manilyn and her sister, whom he punched.

“Nakonsensya ko, uy. Unsaon ta man, nabuhat na man, uwahi na ang pagbasol (My conscience bothered me, but I can’t do anything about it now. It’s too late),” Alfonso said.

He denied that he raped Manilyn.
#7622
Alfonso said he consumed a sachet of shabu worth P300 before that, so he could have the guts to kill Manilyn. He said he had planned and tried to do the crime before, because Manilyn meddled with his use of illegal drugs.

“Tungod sa kalagot ba, kana bang manghilabot sa dili iyahang problema, kana bitawng parte anang bisyo, makigtabi siyang Mama. Si Mama gani masuko, palayason man sad ta (I was mad at her because she always told my mother about my vice. My mother would then get mad at me, throw me out of the house),” Alfonso said.

He also admitted that he lit their house on fire after he killed Manilyn, but immediately put out the flames after realizing it might affect his own immediate family, too.

He planned to surrender. But the police caught him first. Police escort Alfonso Saballa (center) to the Cebu City Police Office headquarters after his arrest one day since the discovery of his sister-in-law’s body in Talisay City.  (Sun.Star Foto/Arni Aclao)

WHEN Alfonso “Allan” Saballa started narrating how he killed his sister-in-law in their house last Saturday night, he was grinning.

Alfonso was arrested in an abandoned house in Barangay To-ong, Cebu City past 10 a.m. yesterday, a day after his sister-in-law Manilyn Saballa, 27, was found under the house in Sitio Garden, Poblacion, Talisay City.

He admitted killing her, but denied the rape angle. An autopsy result released yesterday, the police said, also showed no signs the 27-year-old had been sexually assaulted.

“Ako siyang gibunalan og martilyo sa iyang ulo, upat o lima ka higayon. Human, gituok nako’g alambre; human, gihulog nako sa bintana. Nahubo man ang iyang sinina paghulog niya sa bintana, ako na lang giputos og habol unya akong gilubong sa yuta, unya tubigan man diay, di na malubong. Gidat-ogan na lang nako sa bato (I hit her head with a hammer for four or five times. Then, I choked her with a wire and dropped her out through the window. Her dress got snagged as she fell, so I wrapped her body with a blanket and tried to bury her. But she floated in the canal there, so I put some rocks on top of her body),” Alfonso recalled.

Luanda as viewed from the fort. Image by Erik Cleves Kristensen

The Angolan capital remains the world’s most expensive city for expatriates, according Mercer’s annual survey. The high cost of rent, security and imported goods in the oil-rich nation, has kept Luanda atop the survey for three years running. Hong Kong has climbed to second, with Zurich and Singapore sitting third and fourth respectively. Chad’s capital N’Djamena, the only other African city in the top ten, dropped from second to tenth. Geneva, Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul and Bern make up the remainder of the top ten.

MANILA, Philippines â€" The Sandiganbayan sentenced a former Philippine consul general in Japan to eight years in prison for falsely claiming to be a graduate of a communication course at the University of the Philippines.

The anti-graft court also ordered Maria Lourdes Ramiro-Lopez to pay P5,000 fine for falsification of a public document in connection with the entry in her personal data sheet (PDS).

During the trial of the case, Ombudsman prosecutors showed Lopez's school records that she did not complete the required number of units to finish the degree of AB Broadcast Communication in 1970.

"The falsity of the statements made by the accused in her PDS, specifically her degree received is confirmed by the testimonies of competent UP school officials who attested to the fact that per school records, the accused did not graduate and her units cross-enrolled in Miriam College (formerly Maryknoll) were not credited," the tribunal said in a decision.

The court ruled that Lopez "took advantage of her official position when she filled up her PDS."

The magistrates added that the data sheet was filled for purpose of her promotion, giving her a "legal obligation to disclose the truth of the facts stated in the documents."

In 2013, the Ombudsman dismissed Lopez from government service after finding her administratively liable for dishonesty, misconduct and conduct prejudicial to the interest of the service.

Lopez began her career with the Department of Foreign Affairs as a Foreign Service Staff Employee I at the Philippine Consulate in New York City.

She then rose through the ranks and served as Foreign Service Officer IV, FSO III, FSO II, FSO I, Counselor and Chief of Mission II, CM I, Foreign Affairs assistant secretary and Philippine Consul General in Osaka, Japan.

The ultrawealthy have varied profiles, from Mexican telecoms magnate Carlos Slim, whose $77 billion fortune is the second largest in the world according to Forbes, to Brazilian beer magnate Jorge Paulo Lemann (net worth: $25 billion), Chilean mining scion Iris Fontbona ($13.5 billion), to Colombian banker Luis Carlos Sarmiento ($13.4 billion).

What is clear is that their numbers are growing, in some cases because family fortunes have been divided up among heirs, said Mykolas Rambus, CEO of Singapore-based Wealth-X.

"The amount of wealthy people globally is booming and that is true in Latin America: It's growing at a very good pace," he said.

But the superrich also face growing scrutiny in countries such as Nicaragua, where 42.5% of the country lives below the poverty line but 210 ultrawealthy individuals control a combined fortune of $30 billion, equal to 2.5 times the country's annual economic output.

"The main characteristic of inequality in Latin America is not that there are a lot of poor people, but that there are a few people who have a lot," said Juan Pablo Jimenez, an economist at the UN's Economic Commission for Latin America.

Moreover, the latter "pay very low taxes, both in international terms and compared to what they are supposed to pay," he said.

"Taxes on wealth are very low in Latin America, and inheritance taxes are almost nonexistent."

Last year, the humanitarian group Oxfam called for more "fiscal justice" in the region to fight inequality.

But it is easier said than done.

Ecuador's socialist President Rafael Correa had to back down last week from plans to start taxing inheritances of more than $35,400 after an outcry from the business world.

Ensconced behind the high walls of their luxury villas, the mining magnates, telecoms tycoons, large landholders and others who make up Latin America's uppermost crust can be less visible than the region's poor.

But they are the flipside of its intractable inequality problem.

Their lavish lifestyles and growing numbers are attracting keen interest from the global luxury industry, eager to expand to new markets and court new customers in existing ones.

Porsche is one example. Since arriving in Latin America 15 years ago, the German sports carmaker has increased annual sales to the region from fewer than 300 vehicles to nearly 3,900 vehicles, said George Wills, president of Porsche Latin America, which is based in Miami.

The region's largest economies, Mexico and Brazil, remain the "volume drivers," he said.

"But if you look in terms of the markets themselves, the markets that are enjoying good growth are markets like Peru, Colombia, Panama... with 60% growth in some of them."

According to the market research firm Euromonitor, the Latin American luxury market will total $26.5 billion in 2019, up 88.8% from 2014 â€" the strongest growth in the world.

The boom applies to big-ticket luxuries, too.

Mexico is the world's second-largest market for private jets, behind the US, with Brazil poised to surpass it within the next decade, according to a recent market study by the Brazilian jetmaker Embraer.

They buy 10 Porsches a day and travel the world by private jet, toting their Louis Vuitton bags and leaving behind a faint scent of Chanel.

They are Latin America's superrich, and they are multiplying faster than anywhere in the world, coveted by luxury brands keen to tap their buying power but criticized for paying low taxes in a region plagued by inequality.

Latin America, a region of some 600 million people, is home to nearly 15,000 "ultra high net worth" individuals, or people with fortunes of at least $30 million, according to the luxury industry consultancy Wealth-X.

The number rose 5% last year, while the number of billionaires rose to 151, a 38% increase.

That was the fastest growth rate for billionaires of any region on earth.

Natixis Global Asset Management, a firm that specializes in managing large fortunes, recently launched its first Latin American offices, in Mexico City and Montevideo.

"We've clearly identified it as one of the regions where individual wealth is in an exceptional growth phase," said Sophie del Campo, head of the firm's Iberian division in Madrid.

According to her family’s highly convincing account, Dolezal was a blonde, blue-eyed girl who grew up in small-town Montana, one of the whitest areas of the country. Long after her fascination with African-American culture became a driving force in her life, she accused Howard University of discriminating against her because she was white. Dylann Roof, on the other hand, apparently lived in a tiny South Carolina town with a predominantly African-American population. According to reports in the New York Times and elsewhere, many of his 88 Facebook friends were black. (His page has since been taken down.) One could extrapolate that Roof grew up in much closer contact with African-American culture than Dolezal did; if one of these two white people was positioned to claim “cultural blackness” or a “transracial” identity, it wasn’t her.

Does any of that make sense? No, not really â€" or only in America, the land of deliberately missing the point. We can’t look for logic or coherence in America’s racial history. We can perhaps say that the fear of becoming black and the longing to become black are powerful and sometimes overlapping forces in white American psychology, but that behind both of those emotions lies the view of blackness as something alien, seductive and dangerous to the established order. We can say that the most conspicuous and brutal racial violence (although not the most damaging forms of economic violence) has often been committed by poor whites who arguably could or should have made common cause with African-Americans on many issues. We can say that many of the white bohemians and intellectuals who have sought to identify with black culture, like the “White Negro” theorized by Norman Mailer in 1957 (in an essay that also introduced the word “hipster” into general usage), have operated from a romantic conception that didn’t have much to do with actual African-American people or their community.
#7639
But there’s a thin line between love and hate, in the words of an R&B classic that had black and white Americans slow-dancing in the summer of 1971. Dolezal’s apparent racial imposture and Roof’s alleged racist massacre are two facets of white America’s love-hate relationship with blackness, a category whites invented in the first place to represent all the things we are not. There may be good reason to question the mental health of both Roof and Dolezal, but if we frame them as isolated anomalies or freakish, inexplicable cases we are deliberately missing the point. They belong to a long history I discussed in a different context last week, a history that is far from over and whose repercussions will not stop resounding. It’s a history in which white people consistently return to a view of black people not as individuals or even as members of a distinctive but internally diverse social community, but as a symbolic and mysterious category, a locus of fear and desire.

The longing to subdue or destroy the Other and so secure the boundaries of one’s own identity, and the longing to destroy one’s own identity, in effect, and become the Other, are closely akin in psychological terms. I’m not saying that the dreadful crimes apparently committed by Dylann Roof, a young man barely out of adolescence, or Rachel Dolezal’s lifelong campaign of racial reinvention, can be boiled down to such generalizations. But those recurring cultural narratives are clearly relevant here, and the more we learn about these two people’s life stories, the stranger and more ambiguous they become.

White America's pathological obsession with blackness -- in one case as farce and another as unbearable tragedy

http://www.salon.com/
ANDREW O'HEHIR

There is a thread connecting the seemingly opposed stories of Rachel Dolezal and Dylann Storm Roof, I’m sorry to say: America’s unhealthy obsession with blackness. Dolezal loved black people so much that she reinvented herself over many years to become one of them, and Roof hated black people so much that he murdered nine of them in cold blood. It hardly needs saying that those things are not the same; when I say that I discern a relationship between them, or that they are manifestations of the same cultural obsession, I do not mean to suggest any moral equivalence.

If Dolezal’s conception of “transracial” identity strikes many people as an ahistorical delusion, most of us would happily embrace that delusion if it could undo the horrifying historical reality of Charleston. Roof’s story is a sickening and violent tragedy, with no evident catharsis or message of redemption; Dolezal’s is more like a farce, meant to demonstrate the absurdity of our species and its social conventions.

After causing a stir in Israeli media, Mozes Shalom apologized to Obama.

'President Obama I shouldn't have written the inappropriate joke I heard,' she wrote. 'I like people no matter their race and religion.'

'Sorry if I caused any offence to anyone. I hope I will stay married when my husband will land and hear what I did.'

She suffered a backlash on social media, but claims the strongest response was from her other half.

Historically the U.S. and Israel have been allies. But there has been recent friction in the relationship, with prominent politicians such as Benjamin Netanyahu, criticizing the President's dealings with Iran over nuclear weapons.

One of the primary responsibilities of Mozes Shalom's husband is overseeing the strategic relationship between Israel and the United States.

He has been pictured with Obama in the past, while his wife also enjoyed a trip to the White House in 2005.

Socialist Alternative calls for the dismantling of the institutionally racist criminal justice system that killed Kalief Browder and which abuses and exploits so many others.  We demand that minors not be incarcerated with adults, that all prisoners be treated with human dignity and respect, and that no person be held in captivity without a fair and speedy trial.  While Mayor Bill de Blasio is pushing a number of specific and welcome reforms at Rikers, particularly aiming to reduce the backlog of people held without trial and reducing the level of violence in the jail, these do not go far enough.

We call for an end to the racist War on Drugs, the decriminalization and legalization of marijuana use, and the treatment of drug addiction through rehabilitation, not criminalization. We demand the immediate release of those arrested for minor, non-violent drug offenses, the reinstatement of voting rights for those with a criminal record, an end to racist “Broken Windows” and “Stop and Frisk” policies, the recall of all military-grade weapons from police departments, and community control of all aspects of policing. -- http://www.socialistalternative.org/

Not since before the civil rights era have the connections between capitalism, incarceration, and oppression been so obvious, and nowhere is the violence of that system better represented than in the indifference and brutality of our prison system, which has increased inmate populations more than four â€" fold since 1980.

As we consider the terrible death of Browder, it is imperative not to fall into the trap of narrowly focusing on his individual circumstances. What happened to him was unforgiveable, but his suffering is part of a much bigger tragedy that has been playing out for centuries and that will continue as long as we do nothing to stop it. It is imperative that the Black Lives Matter movement and other political movements fighting for racial and social justice demand not only an end to the killing of young people of color, but also link demands for an end to police murders to the building of an overall anti-racist movement that can challenge the very system that quietly destroys ten thousand for every one that it guns down in the street.
#7661
As the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has documented “current trends suggest that one in three black males born today can expect to spend time in prison during his lifetime.” Meanwhile more than 3% of the total US adult population are under some kind of correctional supervision, whether in jail, prison, or on parole. And the disparities in sentencing and imprisonment rates of young African American men like Browder and other youth of color are huge. Though African Americans make up only about 12% of the U.S. population, the NAACP reports that more than 58% of  juveniles in correctional institutions are black males. And according the New York Civil Liberties Union, 80% of  children incarcerated in New York State are Black or Latino.

But such injustices are not only the product of primordial racism. They also stem from  a capitalist system that benefits from the continued incarceration and exploitation of the more than two million men and women in the American prison system. From the perspective of capital, the suffering of people like Browder is a small price to pay for the massive profits and political power that prisons generate for the ruling class. From the huge investor profits available through privatization, to the cheap labor of inmates (frequently employed by manufacturers that provide goods to such companies as Starbuck’s, Dell computers, and even Victoria’s Secret), to the creation of a politically disenfranchised underclass of largely unemployable ex-convicts, prisons benefit the powers that be, while doing little to actually protect ordinary people.
#7662
Browder had never pleaded guilty to any crime and never received a trial, yet three years of his life were taken from him and he was brutally abused, all because he was a young black man in the wrong place at the wrong time. Though many in the mainstream press have referred to Browder’s story as an “American tragedy,” what happened to him was no mere accident or oversight. Browder’s torture at the hands of the criminal justice system was not merely the result of a few bad laws or an overburdened bureaucracy. Rather it was the inevitable outcome of an institutionally racist and unaccountable judicial system that operates through fear and intimidation.

The real tragedy is that what happened to Browder happens to hundreds of thousands of young African Americans and working class people of all races who have found themselves subject to the whims of a racist and unjust legal system. Indeed, the gross mistreatment of youth of color is a regular part of a justice system that has always been deeply flawed, deeply dysfunctional, deeply unjust, and deeply racist. But things have rarely been worse than they are now, and Browder’s case, along with the many high profile cases of police murderâ€"from Rekia Boyd, to Mike Brown and Freddie Grayâ€"reveals the degree to which the American justice system, in service of American capitalism, views poor youth of color as little more than a population to be managed, contained, and controlled.

KALIEF BROWDER AND THE AMERICAN “INJUSTICE SYSTEM”
Published On June 20, 2015 | By James Hoff | Fighting Racism

In May of 2010, 16-year-old Kalief Browder and a friend were walking home through their North Bronx neighborhood when they were stopped and interrogated by police. A man riding with the police claimed that Browder had stolen his backpack, and though he had none of the man’s possessions and had been at a party most of the night, he and his friend were arrested and taken to the 48th Precinct in the Bronx. Afterwards, Browder was charged with robbery, processed through central booking, and then transported to the notorious Riker’s Island prison where he would spend the next three years awaiting a trial that would never come. While his friends were graduating from high school and beginning their adult lives, he was suffering physical and psychological abuse and torture at the hands of the guards and inmates at this prison, often spending weeks on end in solitary confinement.

When Browder was finally released on May 29, 2013, he had spent more than 1,100 days in custody and more than seven of the last eight months in solitary confinement. On Saturday, June 6, 2015, a little more than two years after his release, he removed the air conditioning unit and hung himself from the window of his parents’ Bronx apartment. Browder, who had previously tried to kill himself several times since his arrest, had told his mother, according to his obituary published in the New Yorker, “I can’t take it anymore,” and complained that he was afraid the police were after him.

Happy Father’s Day
Ni BOBBY G. NALZARO

DADDY, Papa, Tatay, Itay or Papi.

Mapasagdan

It’s claimed Kris wants to marry Corey because the ‘momager’ was upset by how she was portrayed in the media following Caitlyn’s identity revelation.

Another alleged factor creating the upset is comparisons being made between Caitlyn and Kris’ physical beauty, in addition to other matters of vanity.

“All of a sudden, Kris’ hair and makeup people were always busy when she needed them â€" and she found out they’ve been working on Caitlyn in Malibu,” a source told America’s Star magazine recently. “Kris can’t believe Caitlyn stole her glam squad! She is the one who put together this team, and she is totally ticked off that Caitlyn shamelessly poached them!

“The truth is, Kris is not a very nice person, so people much prefer working for Caitlyn, because there’s so much less stress and drama with her.”

Kris Jenner is reportedly plotting a revenge marriage.

The 59-year-old Keeping Up with the Kardashians matriarch was married to athlete Bruce Jenner for 24 years until they officially divorced in 2015.

Bruce is now referred to as Caitlyn Jenner after the Olympic gold medallist came out as a transgender woman earlier this year, a move that has garnered the star lots of attention from the media.

Kris has been dating road manager Corey Gamble on and off since November 2014 and it’s claimed she is planning for them to become engaged soon so she can manipulate publicity in her favour.

“She swears it’s the real deal between her and Corey, but anyone can tell the poor guy’s being used,” a source told Radar Online. “Kris figures she needs a man at her side right now, and she also needs to come across as a more human, ordinary person. She’s working out contracts and terms with Corey because she wants to get moving on this pretty quickly.”

A spurned boyfriend wreaked revenge on his ex after they split up - by cutting everything they owned together in half.

Clearly bitter at the break-up, the German man, who identified himself only as 'der.juli' took his power tools to everything, from the TV, a laptop, an iPhone5, a car, the sofa and the beds, as he took the 'split' literally. He didn't even spare a teddy bear.

He then sent his ex-girlfriend her share of the once prized possessions in the post, while he put his half of the goods up for sale on eBay. The broken Opel car, left with no passenger seats or back wheels, was priced at less than £2, while the halved Apple Macbook Pro went on sale for 9.50EUR (£6.80)

The man also posted a YouTube video which showed him sawing the items in two with the caption: " 'For Laura' -: 'Thank you for 12 'beautiful' years Laura !!!!! you've really earned half."

In the video he is seen carefully splitting each of the items with meticulous precision.
The clip finishes with him signing-off with the message: "Greetings to my successor".

It must have been a really bad break-up, if the pictures of the aftermath are anything to go by. Evidently, it was his idea of payback, after she broke his heart in two.

The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) has modified the way a controversial lab studies stress in monkeys in response to criticism by animal-rights activists and members of Congress who say that the research is inhumane.

At issue are experiments led by Stephen Suomi, a psychologist at the US National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) in Poolesville, Maryland. Suomi’s lab studies how removing newborn rhesus macaques from their mothers affects biological processes such as brain activity and gene expression, and behaviours such as alcohol consumption in the infants. He has performed similar experiments for about three decades, and has received roughly US$30 million over the past seven years for the work, according to the activist group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which is based in Norfolk, Virginia. The group obtained documents and videos from the NIH through a freedom-of-information request.

In September, PETA began posting ads in the subway station near the NIH’s campus in Bethesda, Maryland, and in newspapers, condemning the experiments as “cruel and archaic”, and arguing that they yielded results that were not relevant to human health. The group also posted videos of NIH monkey experiments on its website.

When the wolves enter the gelada monkey herd, they alter their behavior to show the monkeys they aren't aggressive. Normally wolves run in a zig zag pattern or make rapid movements when searching for rodents. But when around monkeys they slow down to a more sedate stalk even when hunting.

And even more surprisingly, the wolves in the study don't try to eat the baby geladas â€" an easy-to-get meal.

There's always exceptions to the rule, of course, and during their observation period the researchers did observe one altercation: One of the wolves attacked a baby monkey. The adult geladas quickly mobbed the wolf, which dropped the baby monkey unharmed and ran off.

Primates have been observed to form associations with other animals, but, the authors write, these relationships are rare and often fleeting. In contrast, the gelada's relationship with the wolves is pretty stable â€" the researchers observed it over the course of years â€" and it doesn't appear to be ending anytime soon.

High up on the grassy Guassa Plateau 12,000 feet above sea level, gelada monkeys travel in herds up to 700 members strong. With long fangs, and wild manes of hair the gelada monkeys appear pretty vicious for an herbivore that likes to eat flowers and seeds. They share these grasslands with their main predators, servals and feral dogs, as well as wolves.

According to New Scientist:

"You can have a wolf and a gelada within a metre or two of each other and virtually ignoring each other for up to 2 hours at a time," says [study researcher Vivek] Venkataraman. "In contrast, the geladas flee immediately to cliffs for safety when they spot feral dogs, which approach aggressively and often prey on them."

Peaceful interactions rarely occur between a predator and prey. But researchers in Ethiopia caught wild wolves and monkeys called geladas intermixing without agression.

The seemingly tamed wild wolves just up and walk through the monkey herd, while the monkeys act like the wolves don't exist.

Other carnivores on Ethiopia's Guassa Plateau, feral dogs and servals mostly, hunt the gelada monkeys â€" it would seem that the wolves would be a natural predator as well. But instead researchers observed the two species happily intermixing for years.

This peaceful interaction could be similar to how dogs were first domesticated by humans. "The gelada case is comparable to what early domestication of dogs might have been like," study researcher Claudio Sillero, of the University of Oxford, told New Scientist's Bob Holmes.

From their observations, they think the mutual friendship helps the wolves hunt, by making rodents easier to spot and catch.
