more to like; here's another very interesting write-up about the saga of john and schoep...

Sometimes The Internet Doesn’t Suck

How a picture of a man and his dog unleashed a torrent of human kindness.

(i can never have enough of this photograph.  i can spend the whole day just looking at it. - islander)

Some days it's easy to think that the internet was a terrible, terrible idea.  Reading through comments on YouTube or IMDB or Yahoo! will often bring despair - we humans, for all our technological advances, remain petty, ugly, hateful shits.

But every now and again something happens that not only restores my faith in humanity but also in the internet as a force for something other than spawning horrific brony subcultures.  Such a story concerns the picture above, which you've probably seen by now on Reddit or Facebook or Twitter or any number of sites online.  That picture is John Unger, floating in Lake Superior with his dog Schoep.  It looks cute, but it's got a deeper meaning - Schoep has severe arthritis and may need to be put down.  Unger brings Schoep to Lake Superior for water therapy, allowing the dog to float weightlessly and ease the pain in his joints, letting him get some rest.

That's touching enough - a testament to the magical bond between humans and their pets.  But what happened when that picture went viral is where the story gets amazing.

â€œA woman from Virginia basically paid for the latest laser therapy on his joints,” [Unger] said.  “She paid for a full treatment, and I don’t know how much it is, but I know I couldn’t have done that.”

Schoep just had his second installment of treatments Wednesday, and has four more to go.  Unger got a surprise when he took Schoep in for his latest appointment.  As he walked in, his vet smiled at him.  “What’s going on?”  Unger asked.  His vet said, “See all the stuff behind me?”  Unger looked, and there were packages of glucosamine, treats and other treatments to help Schoep with joint pain.

Unger cried as he said, “People from all over are doing this. I can’t believe it.  So much has come in already in donations that I don’t have to worry about anything at the vet anymore.”

All of the donors are anonymous.  “How do I thank them?” he said.  “It’s just such an amazing thing.”

We cover topics like serial killers and exploitation movies and weird comic books and stupid toys, but in reality there's nothing quite as badass as the idea that people can be so simply decent to each other.  It's getting a little dusty in here - I have to wipe my eyes.

as of this badass's writing day (august 13), the donations have reached USD200k from all over the world, according to one news article.  whew!  mankind will prevail.

rightly so, lorenz.  anyone who couldn't shed a tear or two over this could mean two things; either he's an orangutan without a college education who believes he's a plastic piggy bank made in china, or he's a marijuana plant hoping he'll be transformed into a contraceptive pill. :) ???

Dog tied to railroad tracks saved by eagle-eyed engineer

Riverside County Animal Services
"It's probably one of the worst things I've seen," said Union Pacific Special Agent Sal Pina, who untied Banjo from the tracks.

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

An elderly man who wanted to get rid of his dog tied the pooch to the train tracks, but his dastardly plan was foiled by an eagle-eyed engineer, according to authorities.

The railroad operator hit the emergency brakes and the 10-month-old poodle terrier mix -- nicknamed Banjo by animal-control officials in Riverside County, Calif. -- was saved.

His owner was detained but will not be charged with a crime because he may have dementia, officials said. He told investigators he didn't want the dog but didn't know what to do with him.

"It's probably one of the worst things I've seen," Union Pacific Special Agent Sal Pina, who untied the animal from the tracks after the close call on April 2, said in a statement released Tuesday.

"I've never seen something like this," said Pina, who owns the same breed of dog.

Riverside officials said the dog was healthy and friendly. Although he made several TV appearances, he's no publicity hound; a vet tech takes him home every night to work on his timid temperament, officials said.

Hundreds of adoption offers from across the country poured in and officials said they expect Banjo -- named after old traffic signals found on some rail lines -- will have a new home by Monday.
