8. Utilitarianism

Utilitarianism is the ethical doctrine that the moral worth of an action is solely determined by its contribution to overall utility. It is a form of consequentialism, meaning that the moral worth of an action is determined by its outcome â€" the ends justify the means.

Utilitarianism was first theorized by Jeremy Bentham who declared that ‘good’ was whatever brought the greatest happiness to the greatest number of people. However, the philosophy is most associated with John Stuart Mill and his book Utilitarianism (1863).

7. Epicureanism

Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.
- Epicurus (341-270 BC)

Epicureanism is a philosophy based on the teachings Greek philosopher Epicurus, closely associated with hedonism. Epicurus was skeptical of superstition and divinity, and proposed that the sole meaning of existence was self-pleasure, or more accurately, the absence of pain and fear, the combination of which would lead to happiness in its highest form. For Epicurus, the highest pleasure was obtained by knowledge, friendship and virtue â€" as well as sex and food.

6. Positivism

The deepest sin against the human mind is to believe things without evidence.
- Thomas H. Huxley (1825-1895)

Positivism is a philosophy that states that the only authentic knowledge is scientific knowledge and that such knowledge can only come from positive affirmation of theories through strict scientific method. It is closely associated with empiricism and rationalism. It was first theorized by Auguste Comte in the mid 19th century, and developed into a modern philosophy favoured by scientists and technocrats.

5. Absurdism

You will never be happy if you continue to search for what happiness consists of. You will never live if you are looking for the meaning of life.
- Albert Camus (1913-1960)

Absurdism is a philosophy stating that the efforts of humanity to find meaning in the universe will ultimately fail (and, hence, are absurd) because no such meaning exists, at least in relation to humanity. Absurdism pertains that, although such meaning may exist, the pursuit of it is not essential. It is distinguished from nihilism by its subjective view of humanity, theology and meaning. It is best to think of it as the ‘agnostic’ stage between existentialism and nihilism.

Soren Kierkegaard wrote extensively on absurdism in the mid 19th century, but the philosophy is most associated with Albert Camus and his novels The Stranger and The Myth of Sisyphus.

4. Objectivism

Man has been called a rational being, but rationality is a matter of choice â€" and the alternative his nature offers him is: rational being or suicidal animal. Man has to be man â€" by choice; he has to hold his life as a value â€" by choice; he has to learn to sustain it â€" by choice; he has to discover the values it requires and practice his virtues â€" by choice.

Objectivism is a philosophy developed by Ayn Rand in the 20th century that encompasses positions on metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, politics, and aesthetics.

Objectivism holds that there is mind-independent reality; that individual persons are in contact with this reality through sensory perception; that human beings gain objective knowledge from perception by measurement and form valid concepts based on such perceptions. It claims that the meaning of life is the pursuit of one’s own happiness or “rational self-interest,” and that the only social system consistent with this morality is full respect for individual rights, embodied in pure, consensual laissez-faire capitalism, or libertarianism.

3. Secular Humanism

There is not sufficient love and goodness in the world to permit us to give some of it away to imaginary beings.
- Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900)

Secular Humanism is an atheistic philosophy that upholds reason, ethics and justice as the principles of life. Secular Humanism rejects the concept of a supernatural creator, and says that the meaning of life is to be found purely in human terms. It upholds that there is no absolute truth or absolute morality, and that truth, meaning and morality are unique to each person.

Thinkers associated with secular humanism include Friedrich Nietzsche, Bertrand Russell and Richard Dawkins.

2. Nihilism

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don’t have any kids yourself.

Nihilism is a philosophical (or anti-philosophical as some call it) view that life is without objective meaning, purpose, value or truth. They reject belief in a higher creator and claim that objective secular ethics are impossible. Nihilism is often associated with pessimism, depression and immorality. To them, life is literally “pointless.”

Many artistic movements have been associated with nihilism, such as Dadaism, Futurism and Surrealism.

1. Existentialism

Be that self which one truly is.
- Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855)

Existentialism is the broad philosophical movement postulating that individual human beings create the meaning and essence of their lives as persons. Walter Kaufmann described Existentialism as, “The refusal to belong to any school of thought, the repudiation of the adequacy of any body of beliefs whatever, and especially of systems, and a marked dissatisfaction with traditional philosophy as superficial, academic, and remote from life”. Human beings are to make their own choices in life and find their own meaning, with or without God. Existential philosophers range from the religious (Kierkegaard) to the anti-religious (Nietzsche).

Frequent Urination At Night: Treat What’s Not Just A Bladder Problem


Do you wake up in the middle of the night once, twice, or more, in order to urinate?  Frequent urination at night, also called nocturia, is problem which leads to other disruptions in a person’s life.  An example of a chain reaction disruption of one’s daily life caused by nocturia is insomnia sleeping disorder, which then leads to fatigue during the day, irritability, and so on, repeatedly.

The need for frequent urination at night, nocturia, is a health condition characterized by the general need to go to the restroom.  It is usually designated a problem when a person wakes up to go to the bathroom two times per night, but, people with severe cases wake up as many as five or six times per night to relieve themselves.  Now you can see how this problems leads to other disruptions for a person during the day.

At the most simple level of possible overactive bladder syndrome causes and nocturia , the drinking or consumption of too many caffeinated or diuretic drinks like coffee, soft drinks, or certain teas, especially closer to bed time can be a cause of having to use the bathroom a few times at night.

The older a person becomes, the more susceptible one becomes to this problem.  As we become older, our levels of anti-diuretic hormones decline, which then results in our bodies expelling bodily waste fluid more frequently.  Another leading cause among men as they age is the enlargement of the prostate gland.  Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, or BPH is very common among males who are 40 years of age and older.  The prostate surrounds the urethra and is located between the rectum and the pubic bone right under the bladder.  Since the prostate gland surrounds the urethra, when the prostate enlarges it will compress or squeeze the urethra.  The squeezed urethra in turn slows, backs up, and disrupts the flow of urine from the bladder, much like having a kink in your backyard garden hose does not freely allow the flow of water.

Free People Are Happy People

â€"especially when strong personal morality guides their choices.

The earliest American definition of libertyâ€"stated frequently by the Founding Fathersâ€"is about constraints on personal actions: if I don’t hurt anybody else, I should be free to pursue my own will. As Thomas Jefferson put it in his first inaugural address, “A wise and frugal Government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned.” Despite more recent attempts to expand our understanding of freedom to include claims on one another or on governmentâ€"FDR’s 1941 State of the Union speech, for example, which mentioned “freedom from want”â€"about two-thirds of Americans still define freedom in terms of doing what they want, being able to make their own choices, or having liberty in speech and religion.

Understanding freedom is a matter of no small importance. The Founders believed that it was one of at least three fundamental rights from God, along with life and the pursuit of happiness. These three rights are interrelated: not only does liberty, of course, depend on life, but the pursuit of happiness depends on liberty. In fact, evidence shows that freedom and happiness are strongly linked. But what kind of freedom makes Americans happiest? And what can government best do to promote freedom and help us pursue happiness, as is our inalienable right?

A large body of social-science research over the past decade has been devoted to studying happiness. In general, researchers rely on self-reported measurements of happinessâ€"which, according to considerable work by psychologists, statisticians, and neuroscientists, are actually quite accurate and comparable among individuals. (This has been shown by comparing people’s survey responses to psychological evaluations, surveys of family members, and even tests of brain activity.) And over the past three decades, the nationwide General Social Survey (GSS)â€"undertaken approximately every two years by researchers at the National Opinion Research Centerâ€"has been one of the only repeated surveys to ask people about their happiness and has therefore been used in many happiness studies.

In 2000, the GSS also asked adult Americans about their attitudes about freedom. About 70 percent of the respondents said that they were “completely free” or “very free,” and another 25 percent said that they were “moderately free.” Further, about 70 percent thought that Americans in general were completely or very free.

Perhaps such results are not surprising in the United States. But the GSS also revealed that people who said that they felt completely or very free were twice as likely to say that they were very happy about their lives as those who felt only a moderate degree of freedom, not much, or none at all. Even when holding income, sex, education, race, religion, politics, and family status constant, we find that people who felt free were about 18 percentage points more likely than others to say that they were very happy.
