Respect in the academe is earned through scientific contributions.  I would not claim I am a historian when I have only studied history nor do I claim a political scientist when my major is Political Science.

Respect is earned that is right but respect is also eminent in all creatures here on earth, man, woman, gays , lesbians, dogs, cats and trees..

Who can talk about respect when one manipulates discussions only to flaunt his intellectual arrogance?

As what I have said and I maintain, Religion is a matter of believing without any proofs.  Please read the thread on Belief on one and true religion, then you will see.

Im not saying that I am looking for facts and evidence of the existence of God.
Nor do I say that Im blessed.  Sorry to have shocked your holiness.

I do not want to disturb your normal world.  I would rather leave this thread to intelligent, morally upright and historically and politically correct men.

After all, facts and opinions of there people do not count.

you were not even reading the entire article.

you only read what you want to read.  and my respects for you as a historiam, the Research Output of the Research Institute in Netherlands must be wrong as you try to insenuate.

Again Lorenzo, if you are a real historian , you should know other important sources such as oral history.

The spaniards were the chroniclers who sensationalized Spanish conquest of the Philippines.  Why would they write on something that they try to eliminate?

I would like to rest my case by saying, we live in a world so wild as the Amazon jungle, so strange as the changing climate.  We live as one people with different beliefs, different understandings, different genders..

I am a Christian and love my God, and believe in His words in the bible. God is a loving and just god and I hope that people would not use His words to perpetuate oppression and injustice.  Afterall, He said in the second commandment, "Do not use my name in vain."

If he didnt permit homosexuality then why are there people who have more female chromosomes than male chromosomes? Why are there children who grew up in a dominant male family who still become gay?  Why is Gender Identity Disorder considered a psychological disorder ( as in Germany)?

One can only sin when he chooses to.  Adulterers chose to betray their partners, mudereres chose to kill, liars chose to lie, stealers chose to steal, plunderers chose to plunder?
Is there a homosexual who said he chose to be a homosexual?

Some argue that since homosexual behaviour is "unnatural" it is contrary to the order of creation. Behind this pronouncement are stereotypical definitions of masculinity and femininity that reflect rigid gender categories of patriarchal society. There is nothing unnatural about any shared love, even between two of the same gender, if that experience calls both partners to a fuller state of being. Contemporary research is uncovering new facts that are producing a rising conviction that homosexuality, far from being a sickness, sin, perversion or unnatural act, is a healthy, natural and affirming form of human sexuality for some people. Findings indicate that homosexuality is a given fact in the nature of a significant portion of people, and that it is unchangeable.
Our prejudice rejects people or things outside our understanding. But the God of creation speaks and declares, "I have looked out on everything I have made and `behold it (is) very good'." . The word (Genesis 1:31) of God in Christ says that we are loved, valued, redeemed, and counted as precious no matter how we might be valued by a prejudiced world.

There are few biblical references to homosexuality. The first, the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, is often quoted to prove that the Bible condemns homosexuality. But the real sin of Sodom was the unwillingness of the city's men to observe the laws of hospitality. The intention was to insult the stranger by forcing him to take the female role in the sex act. The biblical narrative approves Lot's offer of his virgin daughters to satisfy the sexual demands of the mob. How many would say, "This is the word of the Lord"? When the Bible is quoted literally, it might be well for the one quoting to read the text in its entirety.
Leviticus, in the Hebrew Scriptures, condemns homosexual behaviour, at least for males. Yet, "abomination", the word Leviticus uses to describe homosexuality, is the same word used to describe a menstruating woman. Paul is the most quoted source in the battle to condemn homosexuality ( 1 Corinthians 6: 9-11 and Romans 1: 26-27). But homosexual activity was regarded by Paul as a punishment visited upon idolaters by God because of their unfaithfulness. Homosexuality was not the sin but the punishment.
In 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, Paul gave a list of those who would not inherit the Kingdom of God. That list included the immoral, idolaters, adulterers, sexual perverts, thieves, the greedy, drunkards, revilers, and robbers. Sexual perverts is a translation of two words; it is possible that the juxtaposition of malakos, the soft, effeminate word, with arsenokoitus, or male prostitute, was meant to refer to the passive and active males in a homosexual liaison.
Thus, it appears that Paul would not approve of homosexual behaviour. But was Paul's opinion about homosexuality accurate, or was it limited by the lack of scientific knowledge in his day and infected by prejudice born of ignorance? An examination of some of Paul's other assumptions and conclusions will help answer this question. Who today would share Paul's anti-Semitic attitude, his belief that the authority of the state was not to be challenged, or that all women ought to be veiled? In these attitudes Paul's thinking has been challenged and transcended even by the church! Is Paul's commentary on homosexuality more absolute than some of his other antiquated, culturally conditioned ideas?
Three other references in the New Testament (in Timothy, Jude and 2 Peter) appear to be limited to condemnation of male sex slaves in the first instance, and to showing examples (Sodom and Gomorrah) of God's destruction of unbelievers and heretics (in Jude and 2 Peter respectively).
That is all that Scripture has to say about homosexuality. Even if one is a biblical literalist, these references do not build an ironclad case for condemnation. If one is not a biblical literalist there is no case at all, nothing but prejudice born of ignorance, that attacks people whose only crime is to be born with an unchangeable sexual predisposition toward those of their own sex

In pre-colonial Philippines, individuals who are queer and different were treated with hight respect and even reverence.  The midgets were considered powerful creatures, and the great Babaylans were women and gays. karyapa was the most popular and respected Bol-anon poet, not a man but a woman.  Most of the gays were either great poets ( tigbabalak)  or witches.  Gays were even considered to have supernatural powers.  Havent you asked yourselfs why the winds, storms and natural calamaties in the Philippines were blamed on gays?  This is because in pre-colonial Philippines, they were babaylans or witches who could either cast a very bad spell or heal sickness.

Transgenderism

We know from Spanish accounts of encounters between conquistadores and the archipelago’s various indios that gender crossing and transvestism were cultural features of early colonial and thus, presumably, pre-colonial communities. Local men dressed up in women’s apparel and acting like women were called, among other things, bayoguin, bayok, agi-ngin, asog, bido and binabae.
They were significant not only because they crossed male and female gender lines. To the Spanish, they were astonishing, even threatening, as they were respected leaders and figures of authority.
To their native communities they were babaylan or catalonan: religious functionaries and shamans, intermediaries between the visible and invisible worlds to whom even the local ruler
(datu) deferred. They placated angry spirits, foretold the future, healed infirmities, and even reconciled warring couples and tribes. Donning the customary clothes of women was part of a larger transformation, one that redefined their gender almost completely as female. We may
more properly call them ‘gender crossers’ rather than cross dressers, for these men not only assumed the outward appearance and demeanor of women, but were granted social and symbolic recognition as ‘somewhat-women.’ They were comparable to women in every way except
that they could not bear children. Cronicas tell us they were ‘married’ to men,
with whom they had sexual relations. These men treated their womanish partners
like concubines; being men, they had wives with whom they had their obligatory children.

Lorenzo,

A sin is commited by discernment, careful meditation of a wrongful act.  Is homosexuality a sin?

I dont know. Im not a priest.

This all I can say.  Homosexuality is not a choice.  It is either genetically factored, psychologically developed..

Transgendered people have more female chromosomes than male chromosomes.

A person only commits a sin when he choose?  If homosexuality a choice?

Not. No one would wish to live a life of a LGT.  No one wanted to be an object of public redicule.
No matter what you do to a gay child, inflict physical pain, psychological trauma, he will never be straight.

If God is just and righteous, how would he allow his male apostle to condemn homosexuals?

Murderers chose to kills, rapists chose to rape, liars chose to lie.

Gays never chose to be gays..

I hope prayers do really save souls.  I hope prayers do also stop men from destroying humanity and civilization just in pursuit of power.

Would it not be harder for Barack Obama to win the presidency if he was really a muslim as the republicans insinuate? would it not be impossible for Barack Obama if he was a gay?

A theoretically defined "abnornal sector" as prescribed by the purportedly "normal" sector does not have any right to govern the "normal" and majority population, isnt it ?

If Clinton had an affair with a gay man instead of Monica Lewinsky would he be able to finish his power?

The bible is meant to enlighten people, and not as a source of oppression and injustice.  I hope and pray the sexless and genderless Holy Spirit will descend upon us.

Maybe not now, not tomorrow, but it will.

I hope and pray that we share this world to the other occupants of this world, gays, monkeys, cows, chicken.. whoever and whatever they are.

If we know how to share love, we also know how to share rights, rights to existence, right to live, right to love.

After all.  We may die and we do not know where we go.  Maybe the chauvinist chrisitian belief is right, may be not..

The only important rule that I know in human existence and relation is respect.  If we learn to respect, no woman is beaten by a man, no gay is deprived from his right, no tree is being cut without being replaced, no man would try to kill another.

There can only be real love when there is respect.  It is the foundation of all relationships.  You dont love a person first, you respect and accept a person first who she or he is, embrace him of her whoever she is, then later love follows.

#614
Maybe one of us here would believe that gays are migrant aliens from mars? right?

We may not notice it but it is.  We cannot imagine a wife discussing important issues and making difficult decisions.

Because it is a mans job, it is a mans power.
#616
The Boholanos strongly believe in "Gaba" or karma or "Baliw" or cursed.  I have not seen homosexuals cursed to perpetual poverty and hunger.  But I have seen macho men beating their wives.  I have seen men suffering from deteriorating ego.  I have seen men persuading and using women as suicide bombers.  I have seen men killing millions of jews.  I have seen men bombing hiroshima and nagasaki.  I have seen men eliminating ethnic minority.  I have seen men bringing the world into war, bringing economic crisis and detaining innocent prisoners in Guantanamo.

The is all because of addiction to male power.

Homosexuality is a prostitution to the male power.  It is a disgust to an honorable gender.  If its difficult for woment to be women, it is a horror for gays to be gays, because the world is normal and for normal people only.  Only normal people have rights, only normal people are morally upright.

#617
I just hope for a socially sensitive and dogma-free academic discussion not purely based on the bible otherwise we find ourselves standing on plaza Rizal, discussing the bible and ending up throwing the bible on each other.

I hope that the sexless, gender sensitive and just Holy Spirit would descend upon us and would lead us to a more valid argument.
#618
In the sociology of absence in gender studies, we assume absence of homosexual people  by only acknowledging men and women.  But the society where we live in is varied and dynamic.
We fail to realize that the society we live in are not only composed of men and women but people of different sexual orientations.

Great conquerors, historians, performers and the like were considered queer and different. The greatest conqueror of all times Alexander was a homosexual, this was not expound in history books because this is inimical to male power. Most of them even experienced persecution and harrassment.  This is because the socially "normal society" as they claim to be consider this as a threat to social order and norm.

Why would a macho Filipino man beat his son who revealed his real sexual orientation?  Because he does not tolerate deviation, because the society does not tolerate deviation.

The term "homophobia" comes from two latin words which means "homo" the same, and "phobia" fear.  We only fear something which poses danger on us or we only fear something or somebody who is greater than us.

Macho men are homophobic because homosexuals pose a great threat to their manhood.

More than anything else, we cannot rely on the Bible as an ultimate source of discussion for a socially sensitive topic such as gender.  We should always remind ourselves that the bible is compiled and interpreted by male hebrew scholars.  Interpretations of which is geared on a narrow male perception which has caused perpetuation of gender inequality and abuse.  We cannot even imagine a female priest, and I cannot understand why and it is not for me to debate on this.

Reading the comments made me realize how people coming from purportedly normal sector seem to abhore homosexuality and their right to express their love and affection.

Is the purpose of marriage only multiplication? Does it logically follows that "normal" people who are sterile do not have the right to get married?  Do we force a homosexual man to marry a woman just because it is normal, not because they love each other?

Isnt it love why two people stand before the alter and make vows to love each other for the rest of their lives?

The world of "normal people" is in the process of continued revolution.

Let me end this on a very simple observation. Have you seen a homosexual man or woman in the Philippines begging for money on the streets? Have you seen gay people standing by, drinking the entire day? I have seen a lot of normal people, who are more than a liable to the society.

Our vision of morality is viewed in a chauvinist-conservative view.  Well, we cannot imagine a gay president too.  Being gay is an indication of weakness, isnt it? Or an object of public redicule.

I cannot discuss much on morality.  We have different views and our belief on heavens maybe different too.  I just hope that when we face our creator, we can tell him, we have live the life according to our conscience unscathed of dogma.

Each and every one of us has a different concept of God. You might have a straight God, I may have a female God, others may have a homosexual God, or a sexless God.

There are major conflicts in private international law most especially on matters regarding citizenship.  We have different basis of citizenship.  The US constitution requires Jus Soli or citizenship by place while the Philippine constitution defines Jus Sanguinis  or citizenship by blood as the basis of citizenship.  As a means of reconciling this conflict is the provision for dual citizenship.

I am reminded of the movie of Nora Aunor "Himala" with the popular lines, " walang himala, ang tao ang gumagawa ng himala".

I am reminded of the apparition of the Virgin Mary in Agoo in the early 90s which drew hundred of thousands of people.  The apparition was allegedly witnessed by Judiel Nieva ( please search the internet, she is more beautiful than me now) and how he/she and his/her family accumulated wealth through man made miracles.

Point of reflection.  Do we need miracles to believe God and live according to His teachings?  Jesus said to Thomas in the Bible, " Blessed are those who have not seen and believed".

I love my Christ.  He is my first love too.  He does not need to show himself to me to prove that he loves me.  I can feel that in every bite of the food that I eat, in the air that I breath and from the love of my family and the people around me.

#622
I believe in miracles myself.  True or not, if it has strengthened my faith I would embrace such belief.  It is just moot and academic to understand why we react to such kinds of phenomena.
The catholic church for all that matters investigates first because they declare such as a miracle.  Some miracles are even disproven later through continued investigation.  The Roman Catholic church understands this phenomena.  That is why it normally takes time before a certain phenomena is declared a miracle.

I mean no offense.  I am a believer too.

Perceptions of religious imagery in natural phenomena are sightings of images with religious themes, especially the faces of religious figures, in ordinary phenomena. Many instances that are reported involve images of Jesus or other Christian figures seen in food, but it has an equivalent in the Muslim world where structures in food and other natural objects are perceived as religious text in Arabic, particularly the word Allah or verses from the Qur'an. Many religious believers view them as real depictions of miraculous origin; the predominant scientific view is that such perceptions are examples of pareidolia.

The original phenomena of this type were acheropites; images of major Christian icons such as Jesus and the Virgin Mary which were believed to have been created by supernatural means. The word acheropite comes from the Greek ảχειροποίηÏ,,οÏ,, meaning "not created by human hands", and the term was first applied to the Turin Shroud and the Veil of Veronica. Later, the term came to apply more generally to simulacra of a religious or spiritual nature occuring in natural phenomena, particularly those seen by believers as being of miraculous origin.

Pareidolia

Pareidolia characterizes such imagery as a form of pareidolia. This is a false perception of imagery due to what is theorized as the human mind's over-sensitivity to perceiving patterns, particularly the pattern of a human face, in otherwise random phenomena.

It is suggested that a tendency of religious imagery in Islam to be perceived as Arabic words is made more likely by the general simplicity of letter forms in the Arabic alphabet (especially in the everyday Riq'a); a tradition of massive typographical flexibility in Islamic calligraphy; and the particular shape of the word Allah (اÙ,,Ù,,Ù‡). These factors make the word easy to read into many structures with parallel lines or lobes on a common base.[citation needed

C. S. Lewis

The author C. S. Lewis wrote about the implications of perception of religious imagery in questionable circumstances on issues of religious belief and faith. He argued that people's ready ability to perceive human-like forms around them reflects a religious reality that human existence is immersed in a world containing such beings. The principal reason he believed in religion was because he believed himself as wired to believe it, just as he believed human beings are wired to perceive inference (if..then) and other mental logical phenomena as representing truths about the external world that can be learned from, rather than representing purely internal phenomena to be characterized as error. He chose to believe in his wiring for religious perception in the same way and for the same reasons that he chose to believe in his wiring for logic, choosing to use and rely on both as guides to learning about the world rather than regarding them as purely random in origin and discarding them. People continue to have faith in the phenomenon of logic despite the fact that they sometimes make demonstrably mistaken inferences.

The idea of beauty had always been traditionally culture-based. However, with the advent of colonization, the indigenous concept and practices related to beauty gradually began to wane in favor of the European or Caucasian standards. Eventually, due to the development of colonial mentality, most societies of the world adopted the Western idea of what is beautiful.
aBefore the Spanish colonization of the Philippines, the Bisayans practiced skull moulding as a way of enhancing one's beauty. As mothers and midwives are well aware, the skulls of newborn infants are so soft if they are continuously laid on the same side, their head become flat on that side. Many societies have taken advantage of this reality in order to provide their children a skull shape which conforms to the local tenets of beauty.
According to William Henry Scott in his book, Barangay (1995), in some parts of Sumatra, non-Muslim women used to bind babies' heads to produce flat foreheads and noses; the Minahasa of Celebes formerly restricted forehead binding only to the nobility; while the Melanau of Sarawak preferred their children to grow up “moon-faced” through binding techniques. Pre-colonial Bisayans too considered broad faces with receding foreheads and flat noses handsome. They did these by compressing their babies' skulls and faces to achieve these local canons of beauty.
How do present scholars know that the early Bisayans practiced skull moulding? Archaeological diggings in burial sites in Cebu, Samar, Bohol and other places in the Philippines had turned out dozens of skulls that clearly show the physical effects of moulding or binding. This writer himself had seen at the Aga Khan Museum at the Mindanao State University in Marawi City in 1992 two complete skeletons that were discovered in Butuan grave site showing reshaped skulls with black teeth filed to points.
The pre-colonial Bisayan skull moulding was done with a device called tangad, a comb like set of thin rod bound to a baby's forehead by bandages fastened at some point behind. This hindered the forward growth of the frontal bone and directed it backward so that the head grew higher at the rear. A scientific study of twenty-two specimens found in the country revealed considerable variation according to the location and the amount of pressure, whether between the forehead and the upper or lower part of the occiput. Thus, some had normally arched foreheads but were flat behind, others were flattened at both front and back, and a few were asymmetrical due to uneven pressure (Scott, 1995).
In the Bocabulario de la lengua Bisaya of Fr. Mateo Sanchez (1617), individuals with the desired tangad profile were called tinangad, but flatness of the back of the head was called puyak. The opposite of tangad was ondo and the word was itself a comment on the Bisayan negative attitude toward unmoulded skulls: it meant as recorded by Father Sanchez, having the appearance of a hunchback's hump.

A sociologist from the National University of Singapore explained that "those who believe in divine objects are mostly those who follow a simple faith which is founded in tangible evidences of the sacred". He referred to the believers who, in May 2006, flocked to the mountains of Mexico's southern Chiapas state where a rock with an image that resembles Jesus Christ was discovered.

Another sociologist pointed out that "these objects are called fetishes or 'objects that are imbued with deep symbolic significance to become sacred objects that embody gods and spirits'." In the monkey tree's case, it was because of a "natural transformation of its material appearance that reminds people of an important legend", and "this form of worship is actually basic to human religious behaviour".

Biblical arguments do not apply to a society with diverse beliefs.  It is exclusionary and prohibitive to people not believing the Christian faith.  In sociology, we refer this to as the sociology of absence.
In any form or understanding, discipline must come with reason.  If we discipline a child, we explain to him or her the reason why he or she is disciplined.  We dont tell him that something is wrong because the society forbids it so or simply the bible forbids it so.  If we do this there might be a danger of perpetuating interpretations of the bible based on male perspective ( early biblical scholars were only men).  We explain to the child why it is wrong not because it does not conform to the norms of society but it suppresses the right of another person, harmful to the environment, etc. and explaining to him cause and effects of his actions.  If  a child understands the repercussions of his acts, then he would reflect on not doing it again.

Samurai is the term for the military nobility of pre-industrial Japan. According to translator William Scott Wilson: "In Chinese, the character was originally a verb meaning to wait upon or accompany a person in the upper ranks of society, and this is also true of the original term in Japanese, saburau. In both countries the terms were nominalized to mean "those who serve in close attendance to the nobility," the pronunciation in Japanese changing to saburai." According to Wilson, an early reference to the word Samurai appears in the Kokinshu, the first imperial anthology of poems, completed in the first part of the tenth century. By the end of the 12th century, saburai became synonymous with bushi almost entirely and the word was closely associated with the middle and upper echelons of the warrior class. The samurai followed a set of unwritten rules called the Bushidō .

A katana  is a type of Japanese sword (nihontō), and is often called a "samurai sword." The term katana may be applied to any curved Japanese sword with a blade length of greater than 60 cm (23.6 inches).[1] The term is sometimes incorrectly used as a generic name for any kind of Japanese sword.

Our freedom ends when somebodys rights begin. There is no abolute freedom.  But freedom to think and reflect, is the challenge of us should we claim ourselves as human beings.  It is because of this that we have conquered the world and out wit and out lasted the dinousaurs.  Should we claim the throne to be the highest of the animal kingdom, then we should not cease to think, reflect.. And this can only be truly achieved through freeing ourselves from the bondage of ignorance.

Almighty redeemer,

We thank you for the gift of life you have endowed on us.  We thank for this opportunity to live, to love and to be loved.  Lead us the way to find and understand our own purpose and meaning in life and know the difference of truth and claimed truth.  Let your wisdom shine on us.  Let not our intelligence grow like monster of arrogance that will eventually devour us but nurture it with your love inorder for us to be an instrument of your peace.

Father/Mother....

We pray.

A socially diminutive ego of a man is reflected by his actions.  If he express his emotions on physical harm, this is just a mask of a deteriorating male ego.  Macho men will express their anger on physical strength because they do have the more important ones.

We should rely on something that is logical and correct.  The problem with us is that we believe something to be true because someone told us or it is a common belief, norm or practice.  The danger of which is disrespecting our intelligence.

We stop thinking when we keep on believing dogmas.  We think that something is not true or correct because the society tells us so, if its logically or morally correct or not, I dont know.

The end of morality is to procure the affections to obey reason, and not to invade it. --Bacon

It this world where we live in, it is sometimes expensive to laugh.
#670
We should at least be thankful  that there are people who made us smile and laugh even for a short period of time.
#671
How do we respect our minds when we keep on relying arguments based on dogmas ?  How do we respect our claim to intelligence when our manner of thinking is construed by opinions not by scientific facts and logic?  How do we continue taking pace when our mindset pulls as back who we are centuries ago?  How do we free our minds when we are imprisoned by our dogmas? How do we free our thoughts when we only have a limited view of a topic and an intrusion to this is seen as a threat to our framework? In a civilized and thinking society, there are no place for dogmas, only logic and good reasons.

I never knew that socially and gender insensitive comments are tolerated in these forums.  Much that we claim to be educated and reasonable in our judgements, we give comments which afford personal attack on gender.

Please base your reasoning not because it is what you believe it is true, but because it is true, based on facts and correct thinking.

We refuse our association to the monkeys, but the way  other people think, it gives me a second thought if we are really indeed the missing link of the homo sapiens.

Kung dili ta musugot nga ma unggoy ta, magpakatawo ta pinaagi sa respeto.  Kay bisan ang mga ungoy nag respetuhay.
#672
It is really pathetic to realize that there are some people who are bounded by their dogmatic framework and beliefs.  We fail to realize that we live far beyond the age of Enlightenment.  Critically judging a person based on physical attributes, gender orientation or even his ability to entertain people with humour and laughter does not consitute an educated and academic reasoning.

Our backward thoughts keeps our feet from moving forward.
#673
The ability to entertain people with humor and laughter does not make anyone lose his "class" as what you say.  People who are socially backward and insensitive are the one who do not have "class" and dont have space in a civilized society.

#674
In Europe particulary in Germany, Transgenderism is considered a psychological disorder which is medically known as Gender Identity Disorder that is why insurance companies pay for sexual reassignment surgery to correct gender disorder.  There is no way to correct the mind, but there is a way to correct the body.  Gender is a psychological concept, which goes on the understanding that it is a state of mind, yes it is mind set.  Gender is commonly identified by sex but not all individuals are born with it.  I remember a friend of mine saying, " Not all women are biologically assigned female at birth!"

More often than not we commonly associate trangenderism with homosexuality but these are two different terms or concept. A theoretically and psychologically homosexual man is a man who does not wish to change his gender, he finds it totally inoder, he just has sexual preference for men.

In the sociology of absence in gender studies, we assume absence of transgendered people  by only acknowledging men and women.  But the society where we live in is varied and dynamic.
We fail to realize that the society we live in are not only composed of men and women but people of different sexual orientations.

Great conquerors, historians, performers and the like were considered queer and different.

Who ever told you  or wherever you learned that showing your feelings and affection for a guy is something that one should feel ashamed about has lived only within the four corners of her wall.

Its plain hypocrisy and a perpetuation of social order which we are used to.  If you claim to be ethical or religious why would 'nt you scan pages of your bible, maybe you will find that Christ hates hypocrites! Im not that religious though...

Ang uwaw mao ang babae nga padili dili, pa virgin virgin, ang ending nabuntisan diay.. Kay nasa ilawun ang kulo.  There is nothing wrong in doing the first move.  There is a big mistake, when one assumes to superficially follow external observances but fails to be consistent in her actions.

Ang problema man gud ani Madam hotandsunnybohol is that, gahuwat lagi ka ang lalaki muhatag ug first move, unya gahuwat man sad siya? mahuwatanay mo hangtud pasko.  Ang ing duol nimo mura man ug nawung ug baki, sige nalang kay siya may ing una??

Dont women also have the right to choose their partners?  If they only consider guys who are courting them to be their choices, wouldnt it limit?

Women in Europe are the go getter .They know what they want and they will get it by any means.  They are equally  philanderer too. Just like a colleague of mine who was caught by her bf having sex with another guy in their apartment.

They just dont court men, they even serve themselves immediately on the table.  I am personally ashamed to do this if he would not eat what I am serving.

Personally, I believe that preserving some of the Maria Clara traits identifies who Filipinas really are.  Too much of being forward and direct is also not good.  Mabastosan gihapun ko mag tan-aw sa mga lovers nga grabe ang petting sa hauptbahnhof (main train station)...

Based on personal observation, German men normally do not do the first move.  Sometimes they are too shy or  too engrossed with themselves.

Just like when I was in a bar, a german guy was keeping on looking at me and gloomed a smile, but he didnt do anything but smile waiting for me to do the first move. Filipina as I am I have a very deep sense of feminine pride, that is why he was left out by a Turkish guy who was more direct and extrovert.

Too bad Turkish men are not my type.  The german was actually good looking and blond, just my type.

You see what I got for keeping so much of my feminine ego? hehehehe

I have totally nothing against men who look for women who know how to do some household chores, but if this is necessary, I personally think not.

That was a good point by leo, there must be shared responsibilities at home whether or not both couple are working or not.  Domestic work at home is also work.

qoute from Lorenzo
In retrospect,

I would rather have relationship with a fairly beautiful woman with high intellect and most importantly her 'home-bodiness'. Home-body in regard to knowing how to cook, to clean, to raise children etc. I'll admit that I'm attracted to women who are both progressive in aspects of education and occupation, but at the same time hold onto their conservative roots.

Can my kids benefit? lol

This is still a manifest social description of roles played by women.  Most men prefer to marry a woman who can cook, wash clothes.. and do household chores.
This is a job description of a domestic helper. No offense intended. Just a thought

I remember the difference between a beautiful woman and a charming woman.  A charming woman makes herself noticed but a beautiful woman is noticed without any effort.

The Philippine society has evolved through the years.  With the advent of modernization, much of our cultural practices, mores and norms are still prevalent in Philippine culture and a deviation of such is something that is conceived a repulsion of morality.

It is unimaginable in the Philippines for a woman to woe for a man's affection.  Moreover, there must be verbal expression and confirmation of emotions before a relationship is considered official ( meaning, the need to say "I love you" and the confirmatory response  "yes").  In the western world, these magic words are commonly uttered later when the emotions and feelings have developed which I find logically honest. Public dispay of emotions (kissing ang hugging) is evidently abhored most especially in the provinces.  Less that I realized that this was a big cultural shock for me the first time I stood on a western land. Do our social roles and funtions forbid us from exercising the ultimate display of freedom, that is the freedom of expression?

Much that I noticed in western countries, it is not strange for a woman to propose marriage.  For a Filipina woman, this is abosolutley a taboo.

Is the Philippine community ready to adapt to such kind of change?  Is it hypocrisy to hide your feelings for somebody whom you have great affection just because the norms and mores forbid you so?  On the otherhand, would it be destructive to the culture that we have grown up with should we adapt to these practices?
#686
Leo. Social injustice  which is visibly manifested through land-grabbing dates back to the Spanish Colonial period.  Before the Spaniards came, lands were owned by communities not by individual persons.  The encomienda which was a reward to spanish conquistadores (colonizers) proliferated the concept of landgrabbing which resulted to vast hectares of lands, the hacienda.  The spaniards also introduced the Torrence System or the land titling system

Although this is only evident in Luzon, Visayas and Northern Mindanao, upon the assimilation of Mindanao as a part of the Philippines, private investors/indivduals got interested in the ancestral domains of the Lumads and the Muslims. Mindanaos fertile soil earned her the title as the fruit basket of the Philippines.  The Philippine constitution of 1987 explicitly provides for the protection of indigenous communities and this has been strengthened by the Indigenous Rights Act.  The existence of a legal instrument does not end harrassment and exploitation of the indigenous communities.

Lorenzo, the research project inverstigated the role of women in Muslim societies, (e.g the significance of wearing the burka (mask and headscarf) and the kumbong (headscarf) and how do women percieve this kind of external practice)  It discussed tangible cultural practices such as women's clothing, social graces and manners through womens' role in the family, in the society.  It also described the evolution of Maranao Muslim society and how do they adapt to change.

They have still stong traditional beliefs, that women's hairs literally is  an object of sin. On the otherhand,  some men would view it as a indication of a woman's respectability.  It reflects chastity and purity, and that every inch of the woman's flesh and hair is sacred.  So there are two sides of the coin, a negative connotation that women general are object of temptation, and a positive gesture of respect.  Women were not allowed to talk to a man who is not a relative of her. The situation posed a great challenge to the researchers.  Luckily, I personally knew a Muslim development worker there. The atmosphere in the Maranao cummunity in Lanao is very conservative. We needed to wear the kumbong when we conducted the enthography.  It was harder for me and you know the reason why.We lived there for a month, shared their food, observed their life and documented their culture.

Patriarchy is stronger in Muslim societies.  The sole decision maker is the man.  Through my association with female muslim colleagues here in Europe, Ive realized how powerful the role of men is in Muslim communities.  A Muslim colleague of mine even needed a written permission of her husband to study in Europe or to travel anywhere else, otherwise she would not be permitted by their immigration office to leave.

The muslim community in the Philippines is struggling to adapt to change, they are still bounded by strict observance of their cultural practices, traditions and beliefs.  Adapting to change while preserving cultural practices is something that is hard to achieve.  More so, culture should not be viewed by an outsider.  Otherwise, this would be ethnocentrism.  We are uncomfortable of muslims practice of polygamy but we cannot judge it if it is morally upright or not because this is their culture.

There are so many things that can be discussed on this matter.  Even the one month of stay was not enough to concretely describe culture on the lens of gender.

Gender is a very sensitive topic.  Other social issues have general understanding but a clearer perspective of gender on all classes cannot be drawn.  All world leaders agree that there is a need to care for the environment but not all leaders would accept a change of social setting and redefinition of social roles.  This is inimical to their roles, and interests on power. We must also reflect that women are still unrepresented in decision-making bodies.   We are prompted to act based on our respective social roles. But there is a historical and socio-cultural revolution which is in the process of continued evolution.

Lorenzo, my thesis in College was entitled "Gender Practices and Perceptions of the Marano Muslim Communities in Lanao del Norte".  It investigated the cultural life of muslim women and men, and how do they view gender. This has exposed me to different Muslim communities there, although my focus was only the Maranao muslims.  This connection had inspired me to work in Mindanao, and yes it was challenging.  It was during that time in 2003 where the peace and order situation in Mindanao particularly Davao was so unstable.  The Sasa wharf and the Davao City airport were bombed, and one of the victims was a student of mine.

A tragedy which has been caused by human fanaticism and resulted to unnecessary lost of lives.

The root cause of social conflict in Mindanao is not only the current social system and structure but historical in nature.  When the Spaniards conquered the Philippines centuries back, they claimed de juri  (legal) government in the entire of the Philippines including Mindanao where they were unsuccessful in their military and political campaign because of the resilience of the Muslims and the Lumads.

Their de facto ( factual) government was only true in Luzon , Visayas and Northern Mindanao.  Evidence of this are the churches build by the friars.

I have taught in Ateneo de Davao University in Mindanao for two years, and I had very diverse students coming from different tribes in Davao, Chinese Filipinos and of course Muslims.  It was even peculiar to see a Muslim student wearing a catholic uniforn while wearing a headscarf.

My students had harmonious relationship with each other.  Religion was never an issue and religious tolerance and respect was prevalent.  The school is a microcosm of the society where we live in, they say.  If this was achieved in the university, there is a good possibility that this can be realized in the outside society.

The problem in Mindanao, is not only separatism but social injustice.  Land grabbing is pervasive in several places.  Even the Manobo in Bukidnon were at danger to be displaced from their ancestral domain because of land grabbing.

The situation is complex.  There are no concrete measures as to resolve the worsening conflict there.  More so, that politics came in.
#699
One point of reflection is Queen Elizabeth II.  Although the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland has a constitutional monarchial type of government where the head of the state is the monarch but the head of government is the prime minister, the actual manager of the state is the prime minister.  The only function of the head of state is ceremonial and symbolic.

Despite of this, the crown of England still holds much power and influence even greater than the prime minister because she holds the sacred symbol of Englands sovereignty.

I am reminded of a latin fallacy Argumentum ad verecundiam.  People submit to the ideas and belief of another because of his authority.
#700
If one has an abolute and conservative definition of peace, meaning to say, a total absence of conflict, then it is utopian concept.
