Experts assert that the 4,500-year-old Red Sea Scrolls provide unprecedented insights into the pyramids — answering who may have built these mysterious ancient wonders and how.

In 2013, a groundbreaking discovery at Wadi al-Jarf on the Red Sea coast of Egypt unveiled a treasure trove of papyri, the oldest known to humanity.

Among these ancient documents, dubbed the Red Sea Scrolls, was the diary of a man named Merer, an inspector leading a team of 200 workers during the construction of the Great Pyramid of Pharaoh Khufu around 4,500 years ago.

This diary offers a unique and vivid glimpse into the day-to-day efforts that contributed to one of the world's greatest architectural wonders.

Merer's records detail the meticulous process of transporting massive limestone blocks from the quarries at Tura to Giza via the Nile River.

Merer's team worked tirelessly, their efforts fueled by rations of bread, meat, beer, and dates — an indication that these workers were skilled laborers, not enslaved individuals as some theories previously suggested.

The papyri also mention Ankhhaf, Khufu's half-brother and the pyramid's chief architect, at long last linking a name to the creator of this monumental project.

The documents also highlight the importance of Wadi al-Jarf as a bustling port that supplied copper tools and other materials essential for pyramid construction. This discovery not only reshapes our understanding of how the pyramids were built but also offers a rare, firsthand account of the people who made it possible

Lifestyle, Culture and Arts / Young Dolly Parton
January 19, 2025, 06:59:59 PM

Young Dolly Parton lived in a cabin with her family of 14 & bathed in the nearby river. Today, she spends her millions on those in need. 🙏
Dolly Parton was born in a one-bedroom cabin in rural Tennessee. Her dad was a sharecropper who couldn't read. As the family grew, the older children got more responsibilities, and Parton, the fourth of 12 children, had to look after her younger siblings.
The kids didn't even have their own beds, and they slept three to four in a bed. They spent most of the time outside because the cabin was too small for them to hang out comfortably. The space outside served as an extension for sharing meals, entertainment, and playing games.
Parton has always been open about discussing her humble beginnings or how this influenced her views on life. She came from a large family with limited resources, so she is familiar with the challenges of being poor.
In fact, fans love Parton for her singing and unique glam-country queen image. They also love her for her generous soul. She spends much of her income on philanthropy efforts, focusing on education, health, and disaster relief.

The Biltmore Estate, located in Asheville, North Carolina, is the largest privately-owned home in the United States. It was built between 1889 and 1895 by George Washington Vanderbilt II, a member of the prominent Vanderbilt family. Designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt in the style of a French château, the 250-room mansion is a masterpiece of the Gilded Age.

The estate originally spanned 125,000 acres, though much of the land was later sold or donated to form what is now the Pisgah National Forest. The Biltmore House features a grand banquet hall, a library with over 10,000 volumes, and a stunning winter garden. Landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, known for designing New York City's Central Park, crafted the surrounding gardens and grounds.

The estate opened to the public in 1930 to generate income during the Great Depression and has remained a popular tourist destination ever since. Today, it remains a privately-owned estate, managed by Vanderbilt's descendants, and continues to attract visitors from around the world with its historical significance, architectural grandeur, and breathtaking landscapes.

Speaking at the 15th Session of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly, Undersecretary Rowena Cristina L. Guevara of the Philippine Department of Energy underscored the critical importance of reducing capital costs for renewable energy developers. She emphasized that an affordable energy transition is essential for ensuring a just and equitable shift to renewables.

"At the end of the day, in order for the energy transition to be just, we need to afford the electricity generated from renewable energy," Undersecretary Guevara stated. "But in order for that to happen, we hope our partners would be able to address the financing gap."

The IRENA Assembly, held under the theme "Accelerating the Renewable Energy Transition – The Way Forward," brought together high-level delegates from 170 member states, development banks, academia, and private sector leaders to tackle pressing challenges and assess progress in global energy goals. The discussions focused on tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030, fostering innovation, and enhancing international collaboration to meet ambitious climate and sustainability targets.

*Knowledge is key*
*What is the biological phenomenon that appears in human gradual loss of muscle mass, strength and function when they are growing older?*

This is known as *Sarcopenia*!

*Sarcopenia* is a gradual loss of muscle mass, strength and function... the loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength as a result of aging... The situation may be terrible, depends on individual.

Let's explore & analyze multiple ways to prevent *sarcopenia* thus:
1. Develop the habit, if you're able to stand... just don't sit, and don't lie down if you can sit!

2. Whenever an elderly person falls ill, and get admitted to the hospital, do not ask him/her for more rest, or to lie down, relax and/or not get out of bed... It's not helpful. Help them take a walk... Except if they lost stamina to do so.

Lying down for a week causes loss of at least 5% of muscle mass! And unfortunately, the elderly can't recover the loss muscles!

Usually, most seniors/elderly who hire assistants loses muscle faster than the active ones!

3. *Sarcopenia* is more terrifying than osteoporosis!

With osteoporosis, one just need to be careful not to fall, while sarcopenia not only affects the quality of life but also causes high blood sugar due to insufficient muscle mass!

4. The fastest loss of muscles (atrophy) is through idleness in muscles of the legs...

Because when in sitting or lying position, the legs do not move, and the strength of the muscles of the legs are directly affected... This is especially important to pay unto utmost attention!

Going up and down stairs... walking, running and cycling are all great exercises, and can increase muscle mass!

For a better quality of life at old age... Move... & don't waste your muscles!!

Aging starts from the feet upwards!

Keep your legs active and strong!!

▪️ As we grow older on a daily basis, our feet should always stay active and strong.

If you don't move your legs for just 2 weeks, your real leg strength will decrease by 10 years.

Therefore, *regular exercises such as walking, cycling etc. are very important*.

The feet are a kind of columns that bear the entire weight of the human body.... So,

   *_Walk every day!_*

Interestingly, 50% of human

𝗩𝗢𝗫 𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗘𝗢 | Long queues. Blocked enlistment accounts. Inability to enlist subjects due to late grades. These are just some of the challenges that plagued the Ateneo student body once again during the enrollment for this academic year's second semester.

An alumni recall similar frustrations during their stay, highlighting how this problem continues until today. However, this semester's enrollment woes have reached extremes, with students and their guardians lining up in the cold and occasional rains as early as 1:00 a.m. to get their queue numbers, only to wait until late at night to pay their initial enrollment fees. With the senior high school enrollment simultaneously happening, the volume of enrollees for the past four days have shown limitations of the current systems in place. For some parents, this experience stands in contrast to the prestige the Ateneo name holds.

In light of this, ThePILLARS Publication collated firsthand sentiments from the same Ateneans who braved long lines and waited long hours on their experiences on the processes in place this enrollment season for the second semester and the need for a proactive, long-term solution to these recurrent, years-long problems. | via Ivan Obias

Workplace & Productivity / Susan Sontag on Solitude
January 08, 2025, 10:13:36 PM

Susan Sontag, one of the most influential intellectuals and cultural critics of the 20th century, was known for her sharp insights into art, culture, and human experience.

Her quote on eloquence and its relationship to solitude reveals her understanding of language and its connection to the individual's inner world.

Sontag believed that the ability to speak well, to articulate thoughts clearly and compellingly, was not something innate or natural, but rather a product of isolation.

In a society dominated by communal life—whether in families, groups, or communal settings—people often resorted to simpler forms of expression.

According to Sontag, it was in solitude and separation from the crowd that a person could truly cultivate eloquence, as it was within these moments of isolation that individuals could confront their thoughts deeply and express them with clarity.

Sontag's ideas about language were shaped by her larger body of work, which frequently examined the intersections of personal identity, social constructs, and the human condition.

She explored the impact of isolation on creativity and individuality in many of her writings, such as in her groundbreaking essays on photography, film, and literature.

For Sontag, eloquence was a sign of a developed, introspective mind that was not afraid to challenge the status quo. The "painful individuality" she referred to pointed to the existential cost of being alone, but also the creative freedom it afforded.

It was through solitude that one could experience a more authentic form of self-expression, not shaped by societal expectations or norms, but born from the individual's own inner dialogue.

Her reflections on solitude, art, and language have continued to influence generations of thinkers and artists.

Sontag's assertion that "thinking in words" is something derived from solitude offers an important insight into the nature of creativity and communication.

In an increasingly interconnected world, where groupthink and collective experiences often dominate, Sontag's ideas remind us of the power of individual thought and the transformative potential of solitude.

Her work continues to resonate today, especially for those who seek to find their voice in a world filled with noise and distraction.

Philippine Daily News / BRP Cabra in Action
January 06, 2025, 05:17:38 PM

𝐁𝐑𝐏 𝐂𝐚𝐛𝐫𝐚 𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐯𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐩

On its second day of patrol, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessel BRP Cabra continues to actively monitor the movements of Chinese Coast Guard vessel 5901. The CCG vessel has been challenged regarding its illegal presence, emphasizing that it lacks the legal authority to operate within the Philippines' Exclusive Economic Zone. This radio challenge from the PCG is a response to claims made by the CCG vessel, which asserts it is conducting law enforcement duties within what it considers the jurisdictional waters of the People's Republic of China.

To enhance safety and oversight of legitimate PCG maritime patrols, Commandant Admiral Ronniel Gil Gavan has deployed the PCG Islander to support these operations. This aircraft will document any potential incidents, including intentional ramming by the CCG vessel, and ensure that immediate rescue operations can be initiated if needed.

Despite the Chinese Coast Guard's ongoing illegal presence approximately 65 to 70 nautical miles off the coast of Zambales, the PCG leadership remains unwavering in its commitment to a vigilant, rules-based, and peace-oriented approach. The PCG will continue to take deliberate and appropriately measured actions to challenge the illegal presence of the Chinese Coast Guard until it ceases its violations of the Philippines' sovereign rights in these waters.

Throughout these monitoring efforts, the safety and security of Filipino fishermen remain the PCG's highest priority.

History / Laura Young Story
January 06, 2025, 02:15:08 PM

Woman Buys 2,000-Year-Old Roman Bust for $34.99 at Goodwill
An ancient Roman bust from around the first century that had been missing for decades has finally made its way into the San Antonio Museum of Art, and all it took was for one artist to buy it from a Texas Goodwill for under $40.
Laura Young was at a Goodwill in Austin, Texas, in 2018 when she found a bust under a table. At $34.99 it seemed like a good deal, so she bought it.
After buying the bust, Young noticed it looked very old and worn. Over the next couple of years, Young consulted with experts in art history at the University of Texas at Austin and those at auction houses across the United States looking for answers. Eventually, Jörg Deterling, a consultant for the fine arts brokerage Sotheby's, identified the bust as a piece that was once in a German museum decades ago, and connected her with German authorities.
Turns out, the sculpture is from late first century B.C. to early first century A.D. The museum believes it depicts a son of Pompey the
Great, who was defeated in civil war by Julius Caesar, while The Art Newspaper reported the bust is believed to depict Roman commander Drusus Germanicus.
No one is quite sure of how the bust went from being nearly destroyed to the Austin Goodwill, but the museum noted the U.S. Army established bases in Aschaffenburg that were in use until the Cold War, so a Texas soldier likely took it before returning home.

The Civil Service Commission (CSC) has issued the Revised Dress Code for government officials and employees when performing official duties, both on and off government premises.

In CSC Resolution No. 24000766 promulgated on 29 August 2024, the CSC introduced updated dress code guidelines aimed at boosting employee morale, professionalism, and productivity of the over two million civil servants, whether working onsite or under flexible arrangements.

The Revised Dress Code is aligned with the implementation of Republic Act No. 9242 (Philippine Tropical Fabrics Law), the CSC-DOH-DOLE Joint Memorandum Circular No. 1, s. 2020 (Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Public Sector), and CSC Resolution No. 2200209 (Policies on Flexible Work Arrangements in Government). The new rules also address emerging social issues such as gender equality, disability inclusion, and social diversity.

Science and Research / Megalodon at Bermuda Triangle
January 05, 2025, 08:03:51 AM

Is the Megalodon still alive? A wrecked plane is found in the Bermuda Triangle with marks that no one can explain.

In a discovery that has perplexed experts and explorers, a team of divers found the remains of a submerged plane at the bottom of the Bermuda Triangle. However, what has really baffled everyone are the mysterious marks and damage on the fuselage, which do not match anything known.

The images show a corroded and clearly damaged aircraft, but what is most intriguing are the deep gouges and cuts in its structure. According to researchers, the marks appear to be from a being with colossal strength and size, which has led to all kinds of speculation. Some scientists suggest that it could be a large shark, while other more adventurous scientists have begun to mention the Megalodon, a prehistoric shark that is believed to have been extinct for millions of years.

The Bermuda Triangle, known for its reputation for mysterious disappearances, has been the subject of fascination and conspiracy theories for decades. This discovery only adds more questions to the list: What could have brought down the plane? What kind of sea creature could have crossed your path?

Giant predator: Some marine biologists consider that the marks could be from an extremely large white shark or from an animal still unknown to science.

Extreme natural conditions: Another theory suggests that the marks may have been produced by the impact of the plane combined with the corrosive action of salt water and the movement of currents.

paranormal phenomena: For the more mystical, this finding could be related to the electromagnetic anomalies and unexplained energies that are said to surround the Bermuda Triangle.

The Megalodon, a creature that could reach 20 meters in length, has been the subject of theories that suggest it could continue to inhabit the depths of the ocean. Although science has not found conclusive evidence of its modern existence, findings like this fuel the debate.

For now, investigators continue to analyze the evidence. Is it the Megalodon or something even stranger? The mystery of the Bermuda Triangle deepens with this shocking discovery.

REASON WHY RAJA HUMABON WAS FRIENDLY TO SPANIARDS: WARNING OF THINGS TO COME!

The phrase 'Cata Raya Chita', a warning in the Old Malay language given by a visiting merchant to Rajah Humabon, foretells what could befall the Rajahnate if care is not taken to avoid conflict with a new force looming over the horizon:

"Have good care, O king, what you do, for these men are those who have con-quered Calicut, Malacca, and all India the Greater. If you give them good reception and treat them well, it will be well for you, but if you treat them ill, so much the worse it will be for you, as they have done at Calicut and at Malacca."

Historians have put forward the notion that if Rajah Humabon had not allowed Lapu-lapu to settle in the island of Cebu advising him instead to look elsewhere for land to settle further up north in the archipelago the course of Philippine history would be drastically different today.

Soon after, as the merchant had warned, Span-ish conquistadores arrive on Visayan shores af-ter an arduous voyage of exploration through the Pacific Ocean.

While the Aginid retells the story of how Humabon befriends the travelers, converts to Christianity and, according to Italian historian Antonio Pigafetta, requests Magellan to kill Lapu-lapu, the Aginid also relates how Lapu-lapu outplays, outlasts, outwits and eventually slays Magellan in the bat-tle of Mactan in the month of April 1521.

Out of the five ships and more than 300 men who left on the Magellan Expedition in 1519, only one ship (the Victoria) and 18 men returned to Seville in September 1522. Juan Sebastian de Elcano, the master of one of those ships, the "Concepcion" (which sank on the return trip), took over command.

They started off through the westward route and re-turning to Spain by going east; Magellan and Elcano's entire voyage took almost three years to complete but earned the distinction of being the first to circumnavigate the world in one full journey. It proved that the world was indeed round.

After that event, the Spaniards over the next 51-years came back to the Philippines in ships of expedition. The most notable one was commanded by Spanish-Basque explorer Miguel López de Legazpi and soon established themselves as the colonial masters of the archipelago for the next 333-years (1565-1898).

The 3rd Infantry Division Achieves Major Success in Combatting Insurgency, Dismantles Guerrilla Fronts and Secures Provinces

The 3rd Infantry Division of the Philippine Army has made significant strides in its campaign against insurgency. During the 4th Quarter Campaign Progress Review and Assessment, Major General Marion Sison, Commander of the 3rd Infantry (Spearhead) Division and Joint Task Force Spear, presented the aggressive military operations against the New People's Army (NPA).

In 2024, the military engaged in 63 encounters, neutralizing 116 rebels, including high-ranking NPA leaders. Of the 116 neutralized, 47 rebels were killed in battle, while 69 surrendered or were captured.

The intensified combat operations resulted in the dismantling of three guerrilla fronts and two sub-regional committees. In dismantling two fronts of the Panay Regional Committee, the 301st Infantry Brigade earned the AFP Campaign Streamer during the 89th AFP Anniversary at the Lapu-Lapu Grandstand, Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo, Quezon City. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. personally awarded the recognition to the 301st Infantry Brigade under the leadership of Brigadier General Michael Samson.

The 3rd Infantry Division's counter-insurgency efforts led to the declaration of Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, and Antique provinces as Stable Internal Peace and Security (SIPs) areas. The division also received the Gawad Parangal Plaque from the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC).

The military assisted many rebels by providing financial aid from local government units and support through the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP), which included immediate, livelihood, and burial assistance.

Major General Marion Sison recognized the sacrifices and dedication of everyone involved in the fight against insurgency. With a successful year in 2024, the 3rd Infantry Division is preparing for the Armed Forces of the Philippines' continued campaign to end the country's internal security operations.

Basketball | NBA-PBA / Robert Horry vs Michael Jordan
January 03, 2025, 09:18:15 PM

Robert Horry has more career NBA championships than any player since the NBA/ABA merger in 1976. (7 rings) 🏆

Only six players are ahead of him, all of whom belonged to the 1960s Celtics players who are part of the team that won 11 rings in 13 years from the late 1950s to the end of the 1960s, when there were only 8-14 teams. (The only exception is John Havliceck, who won twice in the 1970s and was named Finals MVP in one of it in the 1974 title.)

Horry played in an era where there were already 27-30 teams. He seemed to know which team to join to win it all. He never missed the playoffs in his 16-year NBA career.

But Horry is not just a scrub who is useless in the postseason runs of the teams he joined; he was one of the key players in each series he played. There were series where he didn't play much, but his number was always called to make the big shots in the most crucial scenarios of the game, earning him the nickname "BIG SHOT BOB!"

Here are Horry's most incredible clutch shots that have sealed or changed the trajectory of a playoff/finals series. All of these are a must-watch!

✅ 1995 Western Conference finals, Game 1
✅ 1995 NBA Finals, Game 3
✅ 2001 NBA Finals, Game 3
✅ 2002 Western Conference first round, Game 3
✅ 2002 Western Conference finals, Game 4
✅ 2005 NBA Finals, Game 5 (My personal favourite) ⭐️
✅ 2007 Western Conference first round, Game 4

Horry's Rings:
🏆 1994: Houston Rockets
🏆 1995: Houston Rockets
🏆 2000: Los Angeles Lakers
🏆 2001: Los Angeles Lakers
🏆 2002: Los Angeles Lakers
🏆 2005: San Antonio Spurs
🏆 2007: San Antonio Spurs

Horry has more rings than:
✅ Michael Jordan
✅ Scottie Pippen
✅ Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
✅ Tim Duncan
✅ Kobe Bryant
✅ Steve Kerr
✅ Dennis Rodman
✅ Magic Johnson

In the 37 games in the NBA finals he played, he averaged:
📊 9.7 PTS | 5.9 REB | 2.9 AST

Horry's legendary performance has been recognized by the NBA, as they officially grade every clutch shots in the league using the "Horry Scale," naming it after Big Shot Robert Horry! 🙌🏼

✅ That Jamal Murray dagger last week, there's a Horry scale for that.
✅ The Max Strus 59-feet game-winner, there's a Horry scale for that.
✅ All the Dame Time clutch shots ever recorded, there's a Horry scale for that.

And yes, Robert Horry and Will Smith are not related. 🤣

Robert Horry may not be a superstar, but for sure he is one of the best complimentary pieces that we have seen alongside the NBA superstars we all loved.

Tulane University's Luke Auld-Thomas says his team found over 6,000 buildings and structures which resemble pyramids, palaces, reservoirs, and causeways in the abandoned metropolis dubbed Valeriana.

Philippine Archive / Squid Game and Christian Lagahit
December 31, 2024, 09:17:04 PM

"Squid Game" Filipino Actor Christian Lagahit's worst experience in Korea:

"The most memorable one was when I was inside the village bus. It was the last trip, and I was sitting at the back because it was very small. It can only accommodate a few people to sit, so other people were already standing in the bus.

There was this woman who was just staring at me. At first I wasn't paying attention because I thought she was maybe looking at the boys, because there were boys in front of me. I thought that maybe she was just looking at the students. A few minutes passed by, and I was surprised when something hit my face. She threw a cabbage at my face—straight at my face.

I was wearing eyeglasses at that time, and the first thing that I looked for was my eyeglasses because I couldn't see. So I looked for my eyeglasses, and when I picked my eyeglasses up, they were already broken. I kind of used the broken eyeglasses to see because I'm farsighted.

Then I asked, 'I'm sorry, what's happening here? Why did you throw this vegetable at me?' The hardest part was that no one was paying attention to me. There were a lot of people inside the bus. It was filled, but no one was there to at least help me.
According to the other lady, 'She wants you to step out of the bus.' Because I'm not Korean, and that bus was intended for Koreans—but there's no such thing as a foreigner bus here in Korea. She said, 'You just have to go out.'

And I was crying inside. For me, there was nothing I could do anymore. I couldn't complain, but what I didn't understand was there were other people inside that small bus. I just felt so bad that no one was ready to help [me.]
Even when she was about to leave the bus, she was still screaming, 'All foreigners here in Korea are bad people!' I remember those lines from her."

— Christian Lagahit

Ernest Hemingway's 7 Tips for Writing

1: Start with one true sentence.

"When starting a new story and struggling to get it going, I would sit by the fire, squeeze orange peels into the flame, and watch the blue sputter. I would remind myself, 'Don't worry. You've written before, and you'll write now.'"

Hemingway believed that one simple, true sentence could break through writer's block.

2: Stop writing for the day while you still know what's coming next.

"Always stop when you're going well and know what will happen next. That way, you'll avoid getting stuck."

Leaving a little momentum helps you start strong the next day.

3: Don't think about the story when you're not working.

"Never empty the well of your writing; stop with something left. Let it refill naturally at night."

He found that giving his mind space to rest helped him avoid burnout.

4: Begin each writing session by reading what you've written so far.

"When it gets too long to read it all, go back a couple of chapters each day. Then each week, read from the beginning."

This practice helped Hemingway reconnect with his story's flow and keep continuity.

5: Don't describe emotions—create them.

"Newspaper writing tells what happened, often creating emotion through timeliness. Real writing, however, conveys the emotion as truthfully as possible."

Instead of explaining feelings, Hemingway would let readers feel through the action and dialogue.

6: Write with a pencil.

"Writing with a pencil gives you three chances to revise: first when reading over, then when typing, and finally in the proof."

He found the physical act of writing by hand helpful for getting ideas down and refining them later.

7: Be brief.

"The Gettysburg Address was brief by design. The rules of prose are as unchanging as those of physics."

Hemingway valued concise, powerful prose that made every word count.

Each of these tips reflects Hemingway's dedication to clarity, simplicity, and a deep respect for the craft of writing. His advice continues to inspire writers to this day.

Scientists are debating whether concepts such as memory, consciousness, and communication can be applied beyond the animal kingdom, Zoë Schlanger wrote in our June 2024 issue.

"Consciousness was once seen as belonging solely to humans and a short list of nonhuman animals that clearly act with intention," Schlanger wrote in an article adapted from her book, "The Light Eaters: How the Unseen World of Plant Intelligence Offers a New Understanding of Life on Earth." https://theatln.tc/vBeRw3PB

"Yet seemingly everywhere researchers look, they are finding that there is more to the inner lives of animals than we ever thought possible. Scientists now talk regularly about animal cognition; they study the behaviors of individual animals, and occasionally ascribe personalities to them. Some scientists now posit that plants should likewise be considered intelligent."

"Not so long ago, treading even lightly in this domain could upend a scientist's career," Schlanger continued. The popular 1973 book "The Secret Life of Plants" included real science, but also featured wildly unscientific projection; many scientists were unable to reproduce its claims, Schlanger wrote, causing a decades-long avoidance of plant-behavior studies.

A decade later, a paper by David Rhoades, a zoologist and chemist at the University of Washington, proposed that trees were communicating with one another to defend against a caterpillar infestation. Rhoades was ridiculed by peers; his discovery ended up buried, even as it opened new lines of inquiry.
"Four decades on, the idea that plants might communicate intentionally with one another remains a controversial concept in botany," Schlanger wrote. Definitions of communication are slippery; intentionality is even harder to show.

The essential question of plant intelligence is "How does something without a brain coordinate a response to stimuli?" Schlanger continued. "How does information about the world get translated into action that benefits the plant? How can the plant sense its world without a centralized place to parse that information?" To learn more, she spoke with scientists studying plant agency, memory, and other avenues of research.

Facts and Trivia / Falcon Bird with GPS
December 30, 2024, 01:48:23 PM

The female falcon was equipped with a GPS tracker during its journey from South Africa to Finland, covering about 230 km per day.

It walked in a straight line across the African lands until it reached the desert in the north, then headed towards the path of the Nile River over Sudan and Egypt, then avoided flying over the Mediterranean Sea.

It crossed over Syria and Lebanon, and also avoided flying over the Black Sea, because if it got thirsty, it would not be able to drink from it. It continued in a straight line and reached Finland after 42 days.

Weird and Extreme / Foundation of Venice
December 30, 2024, 10:36:30 AM

Venice was built on a foundation of about 10,000,000 underwater wooden logs or 8 to 10 tree logs per sq meter. Trunks function as roots. 1200 years later, those same trunks still support almost all of central Venice. Before starting to build the palazzi that line the canals, the Venetians drove wooden piles into the ground to make it more solid.
As we can read in the Atlante storico della Serenessima,"The foundations of all of the buildings are made of very strong oak piles, which last eternally under water... These are driven firmly into the ground in dense groups, then blocked with large crosspieces and the space between them is filled with fragments of stone and cement, which solidify them into firm, stable foundations.

What is an intellectual ?

There is no need to wander through the agreed definitions on this question. It is enough to lend an ear to the deep and enlightening voice of Umberto Eco, whose answer transcends time with the force of the obvious:

"How would you define the term intellectual?"

With the clarity of a wise man, Eco sweeps the shots:
"If by intellectual we mean anyone who works with his head and not with his hands, then a bank employee would be an intellectual, and Michelangelo would not be." »
This observation, both blinding and enlightening, just shatters perspectives. Today, with the generalization of computers, everyone could claim to be an intellectual. But, for Eco, the distinction lies neither on the profession nor on the social class.

"For me, an intellectual is one who produces new knowledge by mobilizing his creativity." »
Thus, the realm of intellect expands to unexpected horizons. The farmer who, in a visionary gesture, imagines a new transplant capable of producing unprecedented fruit, is a genuine creator of knowledge. On the other hand, the professor of philosophy, if he is a scholar, who repeats, year after year, the same course on Heidegger, is deprived of this title.

The key to this difference? Creativity is critical.
"Critical mind, the ability to question what we are doing or to invent better ways of doing it, is the only true measure of intellectual activity."
Through these words, Eco reminds that the intellectual does not just know, he dares, inventes, pushes the boundaries of the possible. He does not hide behind ancient truths, but reshapes them, tests them in the present.

Through this vibrant definition of humanity, Umberto Eco offers each of us the opportunity to be an intellectual. Because creativity and critical thinking are not the possession of anyone — they belong to all who, one day, dare to think beyond the chartered chairs.

I congratulate the Philippine National Police (PNP) for its success in ensuring a safe and peaceful celebration of Christmas in the country.

PNP's deployment of around 40k police officers in strategic areas has enhanced police visibility and significantly aided in securing the public on this important occasion. As a result, the PNP reported zero untoward incidents on Christmas eve.

As we continue to celebrate this joyful season, I urge the men and women of the PNP to continue its heightened security measures following the declaration of "no holiday ceasefire" by the Communist Party of the Philippines and the New People's Army.

We  support the PNP and the Armed Forces of the Philippines in their non-declaration of Suspension of Offensive Police Operations (SOPO) and Suspension of Offensive Military Operations (SOMO) to prevent any untoward incident that may jeopardize our efforts in ensuring a peaceful holiday season.

We assure the public that the DILG, together with the PNP and other law enforcement entities of the government, will remain vigilant to protect the public and our communities from those who will try to disturb the peace.

Facts and Trivia / Aleksander Doba, a Polish adventurer
December 29, 2024, 01:13:25 AM

Aleksander Doba, a Polish adventurer, was the first person to row the Atlantic from Europe to New York, completely alone and without assistance. In 2017, at age 70, he rowed 5,000 miles from the port of Le Conquet, France, to the shores of New York, braving storms, strong currents and the loneliness of the ocean for 110 days. His feat demonstrated an astonishing level of physical and mental endurance, inspiring generations of adventurers.

HAWAIIAN-PHILIPPINE COMPANY

The Hawaiian-Philippine Company is the oldest operational sugar central in Silay City, Negros Occidental. It was established in 1918 and is currently owned by Jardine-Davis. Among its artifacts are steam locomotives used to transport sugar cane from the haciendas. These were supplied by the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia and started operating in the 1920s. It is one of the last mills in the province that continues to use their steam locomotives until the present day.

It is also one of a few muscovado sugar producers left in the world, and still produces it the traditional way. Azúcar mascabado literally means low quality sugar, but is nutritionally richer than other brown sugars or refined sugar.

Facts and Trivia / Who Invented LED Lights
December 28, 2024, 05:48:53 PM

Next time you admire a Christmas tree, think of physics laureates Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano and Shuji Nakamura who invented the blue light-emitting diode (LED) and made white energy-efficient and long-lasting fairy lights possible.

In the LED, electricity is directly converted into light particles – photons - leading to efficiency gains compared to other light sources, where most of the electricity is converted to heat and only a small amount into light.

While it was possible to create red and green light-emitting diodes, blue light remained a challenge until the laureates obtained bright blue light beams from their semiconductors and the gates opened up for a fundamental transformation of illumination technology.

While incandescent light bulbs lit the 20th century, today LED lights are behind many of our illuminations, including our Christmas trees!

Not only do LED fairy lights consume less energy, they are cooler (and therefore safer), sturdier and last long enough for about 40 Christmases, which is certainly something to celebrate.

On December 9, 536 AD. Belisarius took Rome from the Ostrogoths, who a. Having landed in Sicily the previous year, he had encountered little resistance before Rome except in Naples, where a Gothic garrison was present. However, in central-southern Italy there were very few Goths, since almost all of them had settled north of the Po and on the Adriatic. However, Belisarius immediately asked Justinian for reinforcements (the forces he had were really small, less than 10,000 men), who had allocated most of his forces to the war with the Persians:
«According to your orders, I entered the dominions of the Goths, and I reduced Italy, Campania, and the city of Rome to your obedience. Thus far we have fought against swarms of barbarians, but their multitude may prevail in the end. Allow me to speak to you freely: if you want us to live, send us food, if you want us to make conquests, send us weapons, horses and men. As for me, my life is consecrated to your service: it is up to you to reflect whether my death will contribute to the glory and prosperity of your kingdom."

PAL EXPRESS OVERSHOOTS BACOLO-SILAY AIRPORT RUNWAY DUE TO HEAVY RAINFALL

A Philippine Airlines (PAL) Express flight from Cebu experienced a minor runway excursion at Bacolod-Silay Airport on Friday morning, December 27, 2024, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) confirmed.

All passengers and crew aboard the aircraft were unharmed in the incident.

PAL Express flight 2P-2285, operating with a De Havilland Dash 8-400 aircraft registered as RP-C5911, landed on Runway 03 at approximately 5:32 a.m. local time, based on data from FlightRadar24.com, but failed to stop within the runway's designated length.

CAAP attributed the excursion to heavy rainfall that significantly reduced the aircraft's braking action. The aircraft eventually came to rest on the airport's taxiway.

"All passengers and crew onboard were unharmed and were promptly attended to by airport personnel and authorities," the CAAP stated in its press release. The agency did not specify the number of passengers and crew members on board.

Due to the incident, PAL canceled the return flight 2P-2286 from Bacolod to Cebu. Additionally, the disruption caused the cancellation of two Cebgo flights departing from Cebu. However, as of this writing, flight operations have returned to normal.

Affected passengers were immediately notified and provided with rebooking options or alternative travel arrangements," the CAAP said.

The CAAP emphasized its commitment to passenger safety and announced that a detailed investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the minor runway excursion and implement measures to prevent similar incidents.

Philippine Daily News / Abu Sayyaf in Basilan Surrenders
December 27, 2024, 09:21:31 AM

𝐋𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐒𝐆 𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐫 (𝟒) 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐧

𝐈𝐬𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐚 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐧 – On 26 December 2024, a day after Christmas, the last four (4) remaining ASG members of Basilan-based ASG with four (4) other followers voluntarily surrendered and presented themselves to Brigadier General Alvin V Luzon, the Commander of the 101st Infantry (Three Red Arrows) Brigade in Brgy Guiong, Sumisip, Basilan.

The successful facilitation of the said surrender was due to the relentless effort of 101st Infantry Brigade, 32IB, 4SFBn, 18IB, and 45IB in collaboration with Sumisip LGU headed by Mayor Jul-Adnan Hataman and Vice Mayor Gulam "Boy" Hataman, MILF-CCCH Basilan headed by Hadji Samad Atain; and 114BC, MILF-BIAF headed by Amir Sauran Mingkong and Rajan Abdurahman, Deputy Commander, MILF Guerilla Warfare.

The four (4) remaining ASG members—Tawakkal Bayali @JABER, Abul Bayali @YAJID, Julhair Bayali @JUHAH, Hasib Tularan @DADIH—and the four (4) cohorts—Yusup Bayali, Marjan Bayali, Makrin Bayali, and Apong Upaman—surrendered and returned to the folds of the law and mainstream society, for they desired to live normal lives with their families. They brought along with them five (5) high-powered firearms: one (1) M203 grenade launcher; three (3) M16 rifles; and one (1) cal 30 carbine rifle, with assorted ammunitions.

In his message, Honorable Jul-Adnan Hataman emphasized that the Sumisip LGU and the government, as a whole, want to have lasting peace to open its door for continuing progress and sustainable development. Their surrender is crucial for the municipality of Sumisip as he thanked the military for their dedication and commitment to ensuring and providing a safe and secure environment for the Basileños.

Brigadier General Luzon expressed his gratitude and appreciation to Mayor Jul-Adnan and Vice Mayor Boy Hataman for leading the facilitation of the surrender. In his message, Brigadier General Luzon said, "We are very thankful and welcome the surrender of the Tawakkal Bayali group. I lauded their decision to lay down arms and finally join mainstream society. Your surrender today is not only for you, your families, and your future but also the province of Basilan, paving the way for peace and development. Let us altogether declare that Basilan is now ASG-free!"

The surrendered personalities will initially be under the custody of Sumisip LGU, specifically with Mayor Hataman. LGU Sumisip intends to conduct a thorough intervention for the surrenderees while undergoing the social integration program.

Philippine Business News / Rice Stocks in Manila Port
December 27, 2024, 05:09:32 AM

𝐏𝐏𝐀: 𝐇𝐀𝐋𝐎𝐒 𝟐𝟒 𝐌𝐈𝐋𝐘𝐎𝐍𝐆 𝐊𝐈𝐋𝐎 𝐍𝐆 𝐁𝐈𝐆𝐀𝐒 𝐍𝐀𝐊𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐍𝐆𝐆𝐀 𝐒𝐀 𝐏𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐀𝐋𝐀𝐍

Did you know that Ermita, Manila, once had its own dialect called "Ermiteño", which is now extinct?

Ermiteño, also known as Chavacano de Ermita, was a Spanish-based creole language once spoken in the Ermita district of Manila, Philippines.  Sadly, it became extinct after World War II.  The reasons for its disappearance are complex, but the destruction of Ermita during the war and the subsequent displacement of its speakers played a significant role.   The lack of extensive research on this language further contributes to the difficulty in understanding its full history and characteristics.

Limited Linguistic Records

Due to its extinction, information about Ermiteño Chavacano is scarce.  Existing knowledge comes primarily from fragmented literary works and limited linguistic samples.  One such sample, from a book titled "Pidgins and Creoles" by John Holm, offers a glimpse into the language's structure and vocabulary.  This excerpt, provided by linguist Whin Nom in 1956, reveals similarities to Zamboangueño Chavacano, with subtle differences in word usage.

Comparison with Zamboangueño Chavacano

While sharing a common Spanish base, Ermiteño differed slightly from its better-documented cousin, Zamboangueño Chavacano.  One notable difference was the use of "no mas" instead of "lang" (meaning "only").  Furthermore, Ermiteño incorporated words directly from Spanish that didn't exist in Zamboangueño.  A grandmother's experience, recounted by a descendant, illustrates this difference:  unable to communicate with Zamboangueño speakers due to her Ermiteño's closer proximity to standard Spanish.

The Legacy of Ermiteño

Despite its extinction, Ermiteño Chavacano leaves a legacy as one of several Chavacano dialects spoken in the Philippines. Its existence highlights the rich linguistic diversity of the country and the impact of historical events on language evolution and survival.  The limited surviving literary works, though few, provide valuable insights into the language and its cultural context.   Further research could potentially uncover more information about this lost creole.

A Lesson for Frequent Flyers: 🚨Beware of Over-Friendly Passengers

On a flight to Dubai, an older lady sat next to me. She politely asked for help with her luggage, but a kind gentleman across the aisle assisted her instead. As I'm not tall, I avoid the overhead compartments whenever possible.

Once seated, she immediately started a pleasant conversation. She was friendly, and we chatted throughout the flight. However, as we began our descent into Dubai, she suddenly complained of severe stomach pains. Concerned, I called for the flight attendant, who provided some basic assistance. The lady then started calling me "my daughter," clinging to my hand. It seemed everyone assumed we were related.

When we landed, the gentleman who had helped earlier removed her bag and quietly advised me to keep my distance and clarify to the crew that we were not traveling together. His warning proved invaluable.

The cabin crew asked if we were connected, and I firmly told them we had just met on the flight. As we deplaned, she begged me to carry her handbag. Torn, I hesitated, but the gentleman emphatically signaled for me not to do it. He even passed me a note suggesting I let the crew handle her.

Feeling uneasy but following his advice, I left the plane, leaving her to wait for her wheelchair. Minutes later, chaos erupted. She had bolted from the wheelchair, trying to escape with her bags. The airport police quickly apprehended her.

To my shock, she began yelling, calling me her "daughter" and accusing me of abandoning her. That's when I realized the truth—she was carrying drugs and trying to implicate me.

Thankfully, the gentleman stepped forward to confirm we were strangers. The police asked her to provide my full name, but she couldn't because I had never shared it. My luggage was thoroughly searched and dusted for fingerprints, as was hers. No connection was found, and I was eventually cleared.

This experience taught me an invaluable lesson: never touch anyone's luggage or belongings in-flight or at the airport, no matter how harmless the request seems. Your luggage is your responsibility, and theirs is theirs.

Now, if someone can't manage their overhead compartment or needs assistance, I direct them to the cabin crew without hesitation. Call it cold, but it's self-preservation.

Takeaway for Travelers: Be kind, but always cautious—your life could depend on it.

Land Transportation Office (LTO) Chief, Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor D. Mendoza II has directed a district office head in Metro Manila over the fraudulent registration of a truck that was involved in the fatal road accident in Parañaque City early this month.

Assec Mendoza said the demand for the LTO district office head to explain is part of the thorough investigation he ordered over the incident at the Skyway At-Grade Southbound, Barangay Sun Valley on Dec. 6 that left one person dead and five others injured.

The vehicle involved was an Isuzu Wing Van with Plate No. JA06375 which experienced a sudden brake malfunction that led to a chain of collisions involving multiple vehicles.

"We want to have a clear explanation from the LTO officer involved, under the concept of command responsibility, as to why the truck was able to register without the necessary road worthiness inspection," said Assec Mendoza.

In the letter, the LTO officer was given five days upon receipt of the letter to explain why no administrative action shall be initiated for violation of the 2017 Rules on Administrative Cases in the Civil Service (RACCS).

"Failure on your part to submit the required explanation within a specified period shall be construed as a waiver on your part to controvert the issues raised against you and the case shall be decided on the basis of evidence at hand," the letter read.

The letter was sent to the LTO officer in Metro Manila amid the ongoing campaign against fixers and their alleged cohorts in the agency.

Recently, at least three LTO officers were sanctioned over fraudulent transactions in their respective offices. #

Basketball | NBA-PBA / Al Solis from Purefoods to Sunkist
December 25, 2024, 05:01:51 AM

Alfonso Solis (born December 23, 1962), better known as Al Solis, is a Filipino retired professional basketball player in the Philippine Basketball Association.

Originally drafted by Hills Bros. (formerly Alaska Milk) in the PBA, Solis was traded to Shell, along with Rey Cuenco in exchange for Bogs Adornado. After placing second to Allan Caidic for the rookie of the year honors in his freshman year, Solis moved to newcomer Purefoods Hotdogs at the beginning of the 1988 PBA season. Al was responsible for leading the Hotdogs to their first-ever PBA championship in 1990, he scored a clutch three-pointer with 14 seconds remaining and two seconds on their shotclock, that gave the Hotdogs a four-point cushion in the deciding Game five of the third conference finals against Alaska Milkmen.

He was offered a P2.6 million contract by the RFM franchise the following season which Purefoods surprisingly didn't match. Solis went on to win four championships with the Swift/Sunkist ballclub. He moved to Pepsi/Mobiline beginning the 1996 PBA season. Al's last stop in the PBA was playing 12 games with Batang Red Bull in the 2001 All-Filipino Cup. After that, he went on to play for Cebu Gems in the MBA.

In his 15 years in the PBA, Solis made the Mythical First team twice and was an All-Star once. He was the 26th player to reach the 5,000-point plateau.

Philippine Provinces / Quad Comm Findings
December 24, 2024, 05:46:06 PM

Product Reviews / Mr Beast Burger
December 24, 2024, 03:19:00 PM

His burger app made $100M in just one year and crashed the App Store at launch.

4 years later, lawsuits, angry customers, and chaos destroyed everything.

Here's how MrBeast's fast food empire collapsed—and the lesson for entrepreneurs.

2020: Restaurants were dying during lockdowns.

MrBeast had a bold idea: a burger app that will leverage ghost kitchens.

The premise was simple yet revolutionary: partner with existing restaurants to cook the food while he brought the customers.

MrBeast made a pitch to chains of restaurants across the US,

'You cook, I bring customers. 'as simple as that right?

This model allowed for rapid scaling, and the excitement around the brand was electric.

Within weeks of announcing the concept, 300 restaurants across the U.S. had signed up.

No one expected what came next.

When the app launched on December 19, 2020, the response was overwhelming.

It skyrocketed to #1 on the App Store and even crashed its servers due to demand.
Customers lined up for hours, kitchens scrambled to keep up, and within 24 hours,

MrBeast had proven he could translate his massive online following into real-world sales.

In just three months, over a million burgers were sold, and by 2022, the brand had expanded to over 1,700 locations in Canada, the UK, UAE, and Singapore—a staggering achievement for someone with no prior restaurant experience.

It was the kind of chaos you dream of—until it became a nightmare.

All from a YouTuber with no restaurant experience.

But behind the scenes, cracks were starting to form.

Then the complaints started pouring in:

• Raw burgers.
• Wrong orders.
• Hours-long delays.

MrBeast tried to handle it himself, responding to every complaint.

But this wasn't just bad service—it was the start of something much worse.

Ghost kitchens were a double-edged sword:

✅ Fast expansion? Easy.
❌ Quality control? Impossible.

MrBeast's name was on the brand, but he couldn't control the food.

And as complaints mounted, his empire teetered on the edge of collapse.

September 2022: MrBeast tried one last solution.

He opened a real restaurant in New Jersey.

10,000 fans showed up in minutes, setting records for the most burgers sold in a single day.

It was a glimmer of hope—but his partners had other plans.

'Physical stores cost too much,' their partners said.

'Stick to ghost kitchens: No rent. No staff. No equipment.'

They chose profit over quality.

MrBeast faced an impossible decision—and he wasn't going to stay silent.

June 2023: MrBeast made a shocking announcement:

"I signed a bad deal... they won't let me stop, even though it's terrible for my brand."

He sued for $10M. They countersued for $100M.

What happened next would leave his empire in ruins.

And then it all started to fall apart.

• Restaurants stopped taking orders.
• Quality spiraled out of control.
• The original launch video was quietly deleted.

What started as a global fast food revolution ended in silence and broken promises.

2024: While the lawsuit drags on, MrBeast learned his lesson.

His new snack company?  100% his.

has hit $10M in just a few months.

But what's different this time?

Full control of the brand.

Complete quality oversight.

No outside partners.

This time, MrBeast didn't just build a business—he reclaimed control over his reputation.

The $100M lesson:  next time you want to start a business, remember this: a strong brand can get people through the door, but it's the quality of your product or service that keeps them coming back. Don't just chase fast growth—chase sustainable growth.

Make sure you understand the industry you're entering, and above all, never compromise on quality, especially if your name and reputation are on the line.

For any entrepreneur, entering an industry without fully understanding its challenges—or losing control over your product—can be disastrous.

MrBeast's story underscores the importance of aligning your brand values with your business practices.
MrBeast's brand brought customers, but poor products destroyed it.

Trust is hard to build and even harder to rebuild once it's broken.
