- A 'very different' pope -

"I think this guy is very different. He's kind of a futuristic pope, so down to earth, so humble, so loving, and leading by example," said Cristina Temboury, 46, a civil servant.

"He is a fantastic leader, somebody we need," she added.

Puthupparampil Scaria, a 59-year-old Catholic born in India, put it this way: "He is so genuine. He is more like a pastor than a pope."

Temboury's only lament of the day was what she called a catastrophic cellphone blunder: at the moment of truth, after so many hours of waiting, she had the thing set on selfie.

"I took 15 pictures of myself as the pope was going by," she said, laughing.

One older Catholic, retired electrical engineer Don Sasnacht, 72, called Francis amazing and praised his communications skills in particular.

He admitted he finds hard to stomach the widespread impression that Francis is less rigid on hot button social issues such as gay marriage.

Still, he said he is willing to forgive the pope on that one.

"It comes with the package. I mean, when was the last time you saw a president that you agreed with 100%?," Sasnacht mused.

The day held other unexpected moments, and gestures of papal affection: earlier, at Francis' behest, a baby was held up to him for a kiss on the forehead.

Thousands of people lined the streets for a brief glimpse of the 78-year-old Argentine pontiff, who stood, smiled and waved from his shiny white popemobile.

Those who could perched on sidewalk benches. Kids rode their parents' shoulders.

A large screen TV aired Obama and the pope speaking earlier at an outdoor ceremony at the White House. The waiting crowd roared when Obama noted the US is home to some 70 million Catholics, and cheered again when the pope said, in halting English, "God Bless America."

Ask just about anybody in the crowd and they'd rave about the man, about his shift away from stressing church doctrine against same sex marriage, say, and focusing more on fighting global warming, helping the world's poor and its refugees and migrants.

- 'Crowd going nuts' -

Joseph Reblando, another pope-greeter, happened to be standing right next to the girl and her dad and caught it all on film.

"She came back and her father was just in tears. And the whole crowd in my section were just going nuts," he told AFP afterwards.

Backers of immigration reform were also swift to seize upon the poignant episode in the hours that followed.

"A 5-yr-old girl shared her story with Pope Francis today&highlighted why we need #ImmigrationReform," tweeted the Democratic Senator Dick Durbin.

Thus went one small slice of Pope Francis' ride through crowds of faithful in downtown Washington on Wednesday, along the National Mall, past the Washington Monument, after talks with President Barack Obama during his first US visit.

And as the crowd roared with surprise and excitement, Sofia slipped the pontiff her letter.

Born on US soil to Mexican parents, Sofia traveled across the country as part of a group of a dozen faithful, her father among them, from Nuestra Senora Reina de los Angeles parish in Los Angeles.

"She handed the pope a letter asking him to support the drive to legalize undocumented migrants living in the United States," the parish said when contacted by AFP.

The spokeswoman was unable to confirm whether her own parents were undocumented.

Britain's Guardian newspaper later spoke to the child, who told it she had learned by heart the contents of a letter, in Spanish and English.

"I want to tell you that my heart is sad," it quoted her as saying. "All immigrants just like my dad help feed this country. They deserve to live with dignity. They deserve to live with respect. They deserve an immigration reform."

Washington (AFP) - As Pope Francis drew nearer and nearer in his open-sided popemobile and the crowd in Washington whooped, squealed and quivered, the little girl with black pigtails spotted her chance.

Her name was Sofia Cruz, and her story soon went around the world: how a five-year-old had the bravado to deliver a message to the pope on behalf of the United States' millions of undocumented migrants.

In a flash, Sofia clambered over a metal barrier, darted out onto stately Constitution Avenue and headed straight for the pontiff -- Secret Service agents be damned.

Guards nabbed her about half-way there, but the pope waved for them to bring her to him. For her trouble, she got a gentle hoist, a hug and a kiss from Pope Francis himself.

"Xi Dada," which can be roughly translated to "Big Uncle Xi," is the country's term of affection for its president. In November 2014, a group of musicians even wrote a song dedicated to Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, named "Xi Dada Loves Peng Mama."

Some online expressed cynicism towards the video. "How much were they paid?" the video's most popular comment on YouTube, which as of Wednesday afternoon had over 40 "thumbs up."

The Sept. 22 video comes amid a string of new videos that Chinese media outlets have produced in anticipation of Xi's U.S. visit. On Tuesday, China Xinhua News released a video featuring Americans applauding U.S.-Chinese cooperation. And on Sept. 19, People's Daily aired videos in which people in Washington, D.C., and Seattle eagerly welcomed Xi to the U.S.

Xi arrived in the U.S. on Tuesday. While he's here, some of the issues that may come up with President Barack Obama include human rights, cyber warfare, economic turmoil in China and tension over the South China Sea.

China's Communist Party really, really wants everyone to know how much foreigners in China love President Xi Jinping.

People's Daily, the Communist Party's official newspaper, released a video Tuesday called "Who is Xi Dada?" The clip features students from all corners of the globe -- including Cameroon, Vanuatu, France, Japan and the United States -- giving their very favorable impressions of the Chinese president.

Students featured in the video describe Xi as a "wise and resolute president" and "a very humble leader." Some said he was like an uncle, while others described him as a big brother or even father-like figure.

The students also didn't shy away from comments on Xi's looks: A student from Chicago revealed that many people in China refer to him as "Winnie the Pooh," and a student from California said he was "handsome" and "super charismatic."

"His face is a little bit cute," an Austrian added. "Everybody looks at him and they just like him."

"If my future husband is like him, I will be very fortunate," a Korean student said in Chinese.

Australia and Pacific Islands / Re: Judas camels
September 21, 2015, 07:05:11 PM
Culling programs kill between 20,000 and 30,000 camels a year, but Spencer said that number would need to be increased to 60,000 just to keep pace with population growth.

“We are well short of being able to get to a situation where we are having an effect on the population,” he said.

Spencer said the ecological damage a 100-strong herd of 700kg camels could do to fragile desert ecosystems was as bad as damage caused by feral cats.

“It looks like someone has just come through with a whipper-snipper,” he said.

They have also been known to push over windmills and destroy toilet blocks in search of water.

“If you have a dripping tap, they will rip it from the wall,” Spencer said.

Australia and Pacific Islands / Re: Judas camels
September 21, 2015, 07:04:40 PM
An audit of an aerial camel cull in 2003, conducted by veterinarian Jordan Hampton for the Australian feral camel management project, found that 99.6% of camels died within four seconds of being shot and 83% died instantly, making it a relatively humane death.

Spencer said species that formed close matriarchal bonds, like elephants, did not make good Judases, because they were unable to move on from the killing of their family.

He said results showed the technique could be effective in controlling Australia’s feral camels, which remained surprisingly elusive despite their massive population.

“You can go out and search, you can look, you can see some camels, you can go back to get your gear and your buddies, but when you come back to find the camels they’re gone,” Spencer said.

There are estimated to be between 600,000 and 1m camels in the arid centres of Western Australia, the Northern Territory and South Australia.

About 10,000 camels were introduced to Australia in the 19th century for use as pack animals, but Spencer said the population exploded in the late 1900s and now doubled every eight years.

Australia and Pacific Islands / Re: Judas camels
September 21, 2015, 07:03:57 PM
The study trialled the use of 10 Judas camels. The technique involves fixing a satellite or radio tracker to one camel and then tracking it back to a herd.

“It’s usually a female, because they are a lot more accepted moving in and out of different groups,” Spencer said.

“It will go out and find a group and then you can go and find the group and control it â€" hopefully not including the Judas camel â€" and then that Judas camel will go and find another group.”

The method is similar to the traditional use of “Judas goats” in abattoirs, where one goat is used to lead other animals calmly into the slaughterhouse.

The camels are “controlled” by being rounded up and shot from helicopters.

'Judas camels' can lead shooters to feral herds in central Australia, study finds

Tracking technology could help curb the number of feral camels in the outback because of their instinctive herd-seeking behaviour

“Judas camels” wearing tracking technology could help curb the number of feral camels in central Australia, a study has found.

The Murdoch University study found that the “Judas technique”, which involves using an animal to lead shooters to feral herds, can effectively be used against camels because they don’t live in family groups, instead shifting from one herd to another. This means a “Judas camel” can lead shooters to many herds.

Associate professor Peter Spencer, whose previous work included working out the lineage of presidential racing camels in the United Arab Emirates, said a genetic analysis of 1,000 feral camels in outback Western Australia showed they lived in “very, very loose fusion-fission groups”.

But Escudero? He stood by Joseph Estrada throughout the revelations of the latter’s corruption and perfidy as president. True, he railed against the venality of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, but his selective campaign proves that when it comes to basic good governance, he can overlook the monumental faults of a patron and ally and take up the anticorruption mantle only when it’s convenient to do so.

The man is a politician’s politician, apparently cold-blooded and ruthless in pursuit of his interests. After Estrada’s ouster, he was among a cabal of young congressmen who engineered the near-impeachment of then Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr. on the feeblest of grounds. In the 2010 presidential election, he initially declared support for the Aquino-Roxas tandem but eventually campaigned for Binay as VP. He has been credited for Binay’s upset win. Now he and Binay are no longer on good terms, because he has once again jumped fences and latched on to someone who has made a dent in the public consciousness.

Last year 6.3 million people attended Oktoberfest and drank 6.5 million litres (1.7 million gallons) of beer, a particularly strong brew made specially for the event.

The Munich government's point man for Oktoberfest, Wilfried Blume-Beyerle, said visitors would be directed to the southern exits of the station toward the nearby Wiesn.

Migrants will be shown toward a staging area to the north, behind police barricades, with volunteers offering food, drink and first-aid.

Meanwhile the Oktoberfest mood was already in full-swing at the station, with stands selling dirndls, lederhosen suede trousers for men and heart-shaped Lebkuchen cakes.

Australian Ellie Hipwell, 22, on a four-month tour of Europe and trying on a new dirndl, said she had encountered hundreds of refugees on a previous stop in Budapest.

"It was heartbreaking," she said. As for Oktoberfest, she said she said she was confident German authorities would keep things under control so the party would go off without a hitch.

"It could get a little chaotic but mainly we're just ready to have a good time."
#5952
But a large number of people now in Austria are still making their way toward Germany, with another 3,700 arriving across the border Thursday.

Officials warn that with two million Oktoberfest revellers expected by rail during the festival, transport links could become security flashpoints.

While the event is often convivial in the daytime, drunk guests leaving the Wiesn fairgrounds often leave a trail of vomit at commuter stations, while fistfights and inebriated party-goers falling onto the tracks are not uncommon.

Some 500 police will be on duty at the Oktoberfest venue, where around 400,000 people are expected the first day, and Bavarian officials have asked the federal police for backup.

"Our aim is to keep the various groups of people apart from each other so that conflict situations don't arise," state interior minister Joachim Herrmann said.

"Especially those asylum-seekers from Muslim countries are not used to encountering very drunk people in public."
#5953
The remarks sparked outrage among many Germans, a majority of whom say they back Merkel's decision to roll out the welcome mat for refugees, and launched the Twitter hashtag #Oktoberfestung (October fortress).

However far-right groups have also taken to social media, drumming up support for an "Anti-Asylum Rally" outside Munich's main railway station hours after Oktoberfest opens.

- 'Very drunk people' -

Oktoberfest is a massive economic and cultural highlight of the year for Munich, drawing six million visitors from around the world during its 16-day run and bringing in roughly one billion euros ($1.1 billion) in revenues.

Since the border checks were introduced, the number of new arrivals at Munich train station has dropped from recent heights of 20,000 people on each of the last two weekends.
#5954
"But I wonder where it's going to stop," she said, referring to the nearly 75,000 migrants who have arrived in the region since September 1.

"How many more are coming? Where will they all sleep, who will feed them? We want to help but there are also poor Germans who need help too."

Wearing a light blue satin dirndl, a traditional smock with a low-cut frilly blouse, the retired carpet shop owner voiced concerns that can be heard throughout conservative Bavaria.

After complaints by local authorities that they were overwhelmed by the newcomers, Germany suddenly announced Sunday that it would impose border checks to stem a tide of migrants to Munich, where most taking the so-called Balkan route to Germany arrived first.

The same night, state leader Horst Seehofer let it slip that Oktoberfest -- now in its 182nd year -- had also been on his mind when he pushed for the policy change.

"I asked today for appropriate measures to be taken during the two weeks of Oktoberfest so that Munich does not remain the first port of call that it now is," said Seehofer, a member of Chancellor Angela Merkel's coalition who has sparred with her on the refugees issue.

Munich (Germany) (AFP) - Ursula Stellenberger, a 70-year-old Munich native, has been joining the annual giant Oktoberfest beer party for more than half a century but says this year's edition is unlikely to resemble any other.

The largest influx of refugees seen in decades in Germany has run smack into what Munich calls the world's biggest popular festival, starting Saturday, creating a massive headache for security forces and leaving some locals nervous about an awkward culture clash.

Sipping a lager in a beer garden opposite the sprawling Wiesn grounds of the Oktoberfest, Stellenberger says she is "proud" of her hometown for welcoming war-weary Syrians and Iraqis with an outpouring of donations and hospitality.

MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) â€" The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Wednesday, September 16, said it has decided to have the Philippines’ vote-counting machines manufactured in Taiwan instead of China as earlier planned.

“The biggest threat to the 2016 elections is China,” Comelec Commissioner Christian Lim said in a briefing at the House of Representatives on Wednesday.

Citing an intelligence report, Lim explained that there might be an attempt by China to “sabotage” the 2016 elections.

Comelec Chairman Andres Bautista also said the poll body decided to have the 93,000 optical mark readers (OMRs) manufactured in Taiwan “because of current conditions.” Controversial firm Smartmatic is set to manufacture these vote-counting machines.

Taiwan, which calls itself the Republic of China, considers the mainland or the People's Republic of China (PRC) illegitimate. The PRC considers Taiwan a renegade government.

The two black holes pair is the closest of other black holes seen yet, said Zoltan Haiman, an astronomer at Columbia. Zoltan added that the collision of this supermassive black hole pair will helps understand the growth rate of black holes and galaxies. Also, it will test the fundamental property of space-time i.e. its ability to carry vibrations, gravitational waves, which are produced during the time of collision.

The research paper said, "By estimating the combined and relative mass of PG 1302-102's black holes, they narrow down the pair's predicted crash time to between 20,000 and 350,000 years from now with a best estimate of 100,000 years. (The predicted crash time by Graham's team was 10,000 to several million years from now with a best estimate of 250,000 years)."

In the recent years, astronomers have discovered more black holes than earlier predicted. The core of our own Milky Way galaxy, contains a supermassive black hole of about 4.3 million solar masses.

Black holes of stellar mass are expected to form when very massive stars collapse at the end of their life cycle. After a black hole has formed, it can continue to grow by absorbing mass from its surroundings. By absorbing other stars and merging with other black holes, supermassive black holes of millions of solar masses may form. The pair identified by Columbia researchers could collide within 100,000 years from now, which is too short time in astronomical terms. Astronomers from Colombia University have found evidence for the emission of rhythmic flashes of light coming out of quasar PG 1302-102, the site where two black holes exist.

Most of the galaxies have black holes at their center. At the center of most giant galaxies, including our own Milky Way, lies a supermassive black hole so dense that not even light can escape. Over time, black holes grow biggerâ€"millions to billions times more massive than the sun.

Daniel D'Orazio, a graduate student at Columbia, said "The detection of gravitational waves lets us probe the secrets of gravity and test Einstein's theory in the most extreme environment in our universe-black holes".

COLLISION OF SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLES EXPECTED IN 100,000 YEARS AS PER COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY RESEARCHERS
http://nycity.today/
Submitted by Gloria Bradley on Sat, 09/19/2015 - 14:16

Two supermassive black holes are already on a collision path and they could collide in 100,000 years from now, according to a new analysis conducted by researchers as Columbia University. Black holes possess very high gravitational force and currently, very little is known about them. Supermassive black holes are even bigger and have more gravitational pull. The two supermassive black holes which could collide in next 100,000 years, have been identified recently. Their collision would produce enormous amount of energy.

The detailed findings of Columbia team have been published in the journal Nature. The prediction of research team suggests that the converging supermassive black holes in the Virgo constellation would collide sooner than what had been earlier predicted.

Astronomers at Columbia University provide additional evidence that a pair of closely orbiting black holes is causing the rhythmic flashes of light coming from quasar PG 1302-102. The time might seem a period too long but in terms of astronomy and space science, it is not a very long period.

The 29 dogs -- mostly mastiffs, Jindo-mixes and Chihuahuas -- arrived Wednesday night on a 14-hour flight from South Korea to San Francisco International Airport.

A "special response team" from the San Diego Humane Society drove the dogs to San Diego, where they will be evaluated by veterinarians before being placed for adoption.

Dog meat is legal for human consumption in South Korea although increasingly controversial.

The Korean Assn. for Policy Studies estimated that 2 million dogs are slaughtered each year for food in the nation of 50 million people.

Amid a growing backlash, the number of restaurants in Seoul that serve dog meat has dropped to about 700 from a peak of 1,500, according to the BBC. Some of the dog-meat farms have just 100 animals, "others have 10 times as many," according to the BBC.

In San Diego, the 29 dogs are to make their debut at a news conference Tuesday, along with Humane Society officials.

The Humane Society hopes to provide "a second chance for ... animals destined for the worst type of abuse and slaughter," Weitzman said.

Twenty-nine dogs that were once part of a "meat farm" in South Korea arrived Thursday in San Diego for possible adoption, part of a Humane Society program that hopes to end the Korean tradition of eating dog meat.

"The dog meat trade is one of the most horrific forms of cruelty," said Gary Weitzman, president and CEO of the San Diego Humane Society.

The Humane Society International has taken possession of more than 100 dogs from a South Korean farmer in recent months, paying the farmer to transition to other crops, according to news coverage in Korea.

The dogs have been sent to Humane Society and Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals chapters in the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento.

Cloud iridescence is the occurrence of colors in a cloud similar to those seen in oil films on puddles, and is similar to irisation. It is a fairly uncommon phenomenon, most often observed in altocumulus, cirrocumulus, lenticular clouds and cirrus clouds. The colors are usually pastel, but can be very vivid. Iridescence is generally produced near the sun, with the sun's glare masking it, so it is more easily seen by hiding the sun behind a tree or building. Other aids are dark glasses, or observing the sky reflected in a convex mirror or in a pool of water. --Wiki

But the U.N. report’s call for a “hybrid special court,” including judges, prosecutors and investigators from outside Sri Lanka, is likely to be a sensitive issue.

The U.N. human rights chief Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein argues that only an international panel will be truly independent. "A purely domestic court procedure will have no chance of overcoming widespread and justifiable suspicions fueled by decades of violations, malpractice and broken promises," he said in a statement. Many Sri Lankan and global human rights groups also support international involvement.

There is strong sentiment in Sri Lanka against that idea, particularly among those who have used the specter of “foreign interference” to argue against any U.N.-sanctioned war crimes panel. Namal Rajapaksa, the former president’s son and a member of parliament, called the idea of a hybird court “a complete insult to the entire legal system in this country,” signaling that allies of the ex-strongman would likely use any international presence to play on nationalist sympathies.

The government of Sri Lanka has already proposed a domestic mechanism, and U.S. officials have publicly expressed support for it. The U.S. will sponsor a resolution in the Human Rights Council based on Wednesday’s report, and observers are watching closely to see whether all of the report’s recommendations are included. “There could be lot of dilution by the time when it comes up into the resolution,” says Ruki Fernando, a Sri Lankan human rights activist. “It is what the council votes on that will be important.”

The so-called “white flag incident” is one of several notorious allegations of war crimes â€" including the extrajudicial killing of the 12-year-old son of the LTTE’s leader and the shelling of civilians at a hospital inside a no-fire zone â€" described in the report. Investigators stopped short of naming names of those who might be held responsible for the incidents, arguing that the U.N. wanted to present “a human rights investigation, not a criminal investigation.”

That job is now left to the new Sri Lankan government, which has vowed to hold those accused of war crimes accountable. Their plan to prosecute these cases through a domestic body, rather than through an international human rights court, is a departure from the widely criticized war crimes prosecutions in Rwanda, Sierra Leone and elsewhere. It could serve as a model for other post-conflict societies. “If handled well, the case of Sri Lanka has the potential to constitute an example for both the region and the world of how a sustainable peace ought to be achieved,” says Pablo de Greiff, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Transitional Justice.

The biggest challenges are internal. Some of the people who were in command during the war are still serving in the army and are considered war heroes. Maj. Gen. Shavendra Silva, for example, who was in command of the 58th Division, is a serving general and was previously part of the Sri Lankan mission to the United Nations in New York. But there is intense pressure on the Sri Lankan government, internally and externally, to show some progress in prosecuting war crimes, more than six years after the end of the war. “Without going through the pain of analyzing our past actions we can not hope to have a better future,” says Sandaya Ekenaligoda, the wife of Pradeep Ekenaligoda, one of several journalists who went missing in recent years after criticizing the Rajapaksa government. “We need a government that will make those hard choices.”

So far, the new government under President Maithripala Sirisena seems willing to do that. Having defeated Rajapaksa in presidential elections in January, and then effectively shut Rajapaksa out of his own party, Sirisena formed a broad-based alliance with his traditional political rival and with key minority parties after parliamentary elections last month. The goal of this “national unity” government is to move the country toward reconciliation, and it made a significant step toward that goal with the announcement on Monday of a new, South Africa-style truth and reconciliation commission, something that human rights advocates have been calling for since 2009, but Rajapaksa had dismissed. “The new government has shown a willingness that it is ready to take action that former administrations shied away from,” says Jehan Perera, Executive Director of Sri Lanka’s National Peace Council.

UN releases most detailed account yet of alleged war crimes in Sri Lanka, putting burden on government to prosecute

September 17, 2015 3:45AM ET
by Jyoti Thottam  & Amantha Perera

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), the Tamil separatist group that for 26 years waged armed insurgency against the government of Sri Lanka, always said that it would never surrender. It was part of their mystique â€" a promise that they would fight to the death.

And yet, according to a United Nations investigation released Wednesday, top leaders of the LTTE did surrender days before the official end of the war on May 18, 2009. At least, they tried to. The report is the most comprehensive account to date of alleged war crimes during the last phase of the civil war. It describes how the LTTE’s senior leadership, including the head of its peace secretariat, Seevaratnam Puleedevan, and the head of its political wing, Balasingham Nadesan, gathered in the village of Vellimullivaikkal in northern Sri Lanka, some of them with their families, and began sending messages through local and international intermediaries to the Sri Lankan government, including the former president, Mahinda Rajapaksa, saying they were ready to surrender.

The Red Cross and representatives of foreign governments offered to serve as observers to the surrender, but Sri Lankan authorities refused, according the report. Instead, they told the LTTE leaders to surrender to Army troops positioned nearby. According to several witnesses interviewed by U.N. investigators, they did as instructed, walking toward the front line in civilian clothes, unarmed, carrying a white cloth tied to a stick. But on May 18, 2009, the Sri Lankan Army announced that Nadesan and Puleedevan, among others, were killed in fighting by the 58th Division. The UN investigation concludes “that there are reasonable grounds to believe that LTTE senior political wing leaders Balasingham Nadesan and Seevaratnam Puleedevan as well as Nadesan’s wife Vineetha Nadesan may have been executed by the security forces.”

Davao City â€" Muslims here are up in arms over about the recent discovery by the Office of the City Veterinary Office (CVO) of an attempt to sell tuna that is laced with pig’s blood in public markets in the areas of Matina Aplaya, Puan and Toril, which have considerable Muslim populations.

The consumption of pig’s blood and flesh is strictly prohibited under Islam.

CVO assistant Esther Cherri Rayos confirmed that 70.5 kilos of tuna smothered with swine blood were about to sold in these public markets, together with four tons of chicken meat, during an inspection conducted Saturday by the agency.

According to Reyes, the confiscated tuna was no longer fresh but unscrupulous vendors tried to smother it with pig’s blood to make it look “red and fresh.”

Reports about the confiscation of the tainted tuna enraged Muslim groups here with Ulama League of the Philippines (ULP) regional chairman Mahmod Mala L. Adilao decrying the practice as a blatant affront to the Muslim religion.

Carmelito Francisco, a Muslim and managing editor of local daily Mindanao Times, said those responsible for trying to sell the tainted tuna should be held responsible for “disrespecting the Muslim people.”

“Nakaloko sila sa mga Muslims and they are ignorant of Halal, a Muslim law prescribed to any meat preparation,” Francisco said.

Rayos said that, in the past, vendors used to smother the tuna with red dye and not pork’s blood.

“They are now more daring in using pig’s blood. We cannot compromise the health of the people and, besides, there are religions that forbid eating pork, more so pig’s blood,” she said.

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is now awaiting the result of an investigation he ordered, afterwhich, the filing of appropriate charges against all those responsible for the malpractice will be made.

“These people should be charged and imprisoned,” Duterte pointed out as he ordered the CVO to look for more forms of deceits defined under the Revised Penal Code that can be used to charge the vendors.

The mayor added that these vendors must answer for violating the sensibilities of the Muslim residents in the city. (ALEXANDER D. LOPEZ and JONATHAN A. SANTES)

Nasubli pa kini niana nang alas 3 sa hapon ug dinhi na nipalag ang dalaga, kinsa nitaho gilayon sa Fuente police station.

Tungod niini, ang Regional Investigation and Detective Management Division mihimo gilayon og imbestigasyon.

Peta’s associate director Elisa Allen agreed, adding: ‘When you see these animals performing what are uncomfortable and stressful tricks, know that they’re not doing it because they want to â€" they’re doing it because they’re afraid to, often subjected to electric shocks, cigarette burns or beatings if they do not obey in training.

‘Orangutans are also arboreal â€" they swing through trees â€" so the act of standing up on curved feet is hard enough for them.

‘Many of those animals who are disrespected and abused at these tacky tourist traps were also torn away from their mothers within days or weeks of birth.’

Unsurprisingly, animal rights organisations are calling for the shows to be banned.

‘It is shocking that such cruel and exploitative treatment of animals continues for the so-called ‘entertainment’ of tourists,’ Philip Mansbridge, UK Director of the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), told Metro.co.uk.

‘Orangutans are highly intelligent and sensitive animals that share 97% of their DNA with humans and they do not belong in a ring where they are dressed up and made to fight.’

He added that tourists should make sure they don’t go to the shows if they don’t want to support animal cruelty.
