Poems and Poets / Jabberwocky
July 06, 2011, 06:12:10 PM
by Lewis Carroll

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought--
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! and through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

"And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!"
He chortled in his joy.

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

LGU Philippines / PNoy Says
July 06, 2011, 05:53:09 AM
He further noted that the problem would not have escalated had the Philippines stuck to the 2002 Declaration of the Code of Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea, and the previous administration had not decided to enter a new agreement -- the 2005 Joint Marine Seismic Undertaking -- inviting other countries, China particularly, to explore the seas within the Philippine national territory.

“Wala pong may gusto ng gulo, pero hindi rin po nito ibig sabihin na magpapakaladkad na lamang tayo sa mas malalaking mga bansa [No one wants a scuffle but that does not mean that we’ll allow bigger countries to run roughshod over us],” said Mr. Aquino.

“Kapag po hinayaan nating brasuhin lamang tayo, baka po ang mga susunod na Pilipino ay magsiksikan na lamang sa iisang isla. Kapag hinayaan nating itulak lang tayo ngayon, baka po bukas makalawa, ang 7, 100 islands natin ay maging two digits na lamang. Hindi naman po makatarungang angkinin na lamang ng iba ang malinaw namang sa atin talaga [If we allow ourselves to be bullied maybe the next Filipino generation will cram themselves in one island. If we allow ourselves to be shoved aside, maybe tomorrow our 7,100 islands will just be two digits. It’s not just for others to just take what is ours).” -- http://www.bworldonline.com/content.php?section=Nation&title=Aquino-to-Del-Rosario:-Resolve-Spratly-issue-in-China-visit&id=34253

Learn English Online / The Cobra Effect
July 05, 2011, 06:12:05 PM

This is when the solution to a problem actually makes the problem worse. The term ‘Cobra effect’ comes from an anecdote from colonial India. The British government wanted to decrease the population of venomous cobra snakes, so they offered a reward for every dead snake. However, the Indians began to breed cobras for the income. When the government realized what was going on, the reward was canceled, and the breeders set the snakes free. The snakes consequently multiplied, and increased the cobra population. The term is now used to illustrate the origins of wrong stimulation in politics and economic policy. Unfortunately, some of the crises facing our world are the result of honest attempts to solve problems. -- http://listverse.com/

The analysis, which runs counter to decades of research, says environmental factors may be more important than genes in determining whether a child develops autism. The conclusion is roundly criticized by other autism experts.

Samantha Cameron, wife of British Prime Minister David Cameron, poses with Joshua Westcott, 8,
and Joshua Jones, 9, during a tour of Baston House School in Bromley, Kent, south east England,
before she officially opened the school, on June 9, 2011. The center is a new facility for children aged
from 5-16 who are affected by an Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), including Asperger Syndrome.

Environmental factors may be more important than genes in determining whether a child develops autism, according to a controversial new analysis of the disorder in twins.

That finding runs counter to decades of prior research, which has generally found that genetic inheritance is the biggest determinant of a child's risk of autism. The authors of the new study, published online Monday by the journal Archives of General Psychiatry, came to their conclusion after studying 192 pairs of identical and fraternal twins in which at least one twin met clinical criteria for the neurodevelopment disorder.
But the authors' conclusion that environmental influences â€" perhaps chemical exposures, infections, diet or stress levels â€" could be so influential was roundly criticized by other autism experts.

"I think they're really on shaky ground to say that," said Dr. Paul Law, director of the Interactive Autism Network at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore.

"It's a massive claim," said Angelica Ronald, a behavior geneticist at Birkbeck University of London. "It flies in the face of the previous data. I don't see why the results have come out the way they have."

The study authors acknowledged that their calculations were subject to a very wide margin of error and thus could be incorrect. Still, they said that the analysis highlights the need for more research into environmental factors that may contribute to autism.

Time After Time

Lying in my bed I hear the clock tick,
and think of you
caught up in circles confusion--
is nothing new
Flashback--warm nights--
almost left behind
suitcases of memories,
time after--

sometimes you picture me--
I'm walking too far ahead
you're calling to me, I can't hear
what you've said--
Then you say--go slow--
I fall behind--
the second hand unwinds

chorus:
if you're lost you can look--and you will find me
time after time
if you fall I will catch you--I'll be waiting
time after time

after my picture fades and darkness has
turned to gray
watching through windows--you're wondering
if I'm OK
secrets stolen from deep inside
the drum beats out of time--

chorus:
if you're lost...

you said go slow--
I fall behind
the second hand unwinds--

chorus:
if you're lost...
...time after time
time after time
time after time
time after time

Wa man guy salig sa good intentions sa uban, sigon sa konsepto sa tragedy of the commons...

The tragedy of the commons is a situation in which multiple individuals, acting independently, deplete a shared resource, even when it is not in anyone’s interest to do so. The best current example of this is fishermen. Nobody owns the earth’s fish populations, indeed, they are a shared resource. Fish are a good that people the world over consume, and as a result, there are multiple fisherman competing for these fish. Each fisherman will try to catch as many fish as possible in order to maximize his profits. However, it is also in the fishermen’s best interest to sustain the fish populations, i.e., leaving enough fish to repopulate, so that down the road, there are still fish to be caught. If each fisherman is concerned with sustainability, and they should be if they don’t want to find new careers in the near future, they theoretically will work to preserve the fish populations. Here is the problem: there is a lack of trust. A fisherman that acts responsibly and limits the amount he catches will be screwed if all the other fisherman do not. The other fisherman get more fish than he does, make more in profits, and will ultimately deplete the fish population anyway. So each fisherman, believing that the others will take more than their sustainable share, will take as many fish as he can, and the world’s fish supplies will deplete, even though no one wants them to. -- http://listverse.com/

NO AGE LIMIT

Cardiovascular diseases are the world's biggest age-related killers and de Grey says there is a long way to go on these though researchers have figured out the path to follow.

Heart diseases that cause heart failure, heart attacks and strokes are brought about by the accumulation of certain types of what de Grey calls "molecular garbage" -- byproducts of the body's metabolic processes -- which our bodies are not able to break down or excrete.

"The garbage accumulates inside the cell, and eventually it gets in the way of the cell's workings," he said.

De Grey is working with colleagues in the United States to identify enzymes in other species that can break down the garbage and clean out the cells -- and the aim then is to devise genetic therapies to give this capability to humans.

"If we could do that in the case of certain modified forms of cholesterol which accumulate in cells of the artery wall, then we simply would not get cardiovascular disease," he said.

De Grey is reluctant to make firm predictions about how long people will be able to live in future, but he does say that with each major advance in longevity, scientists will buy more time to make yet more scientific progress.

In his view, this means that the first person who will live to 1,000 is likely to be born less than 20 years after the first person to reach 150.

"I call it longevity escape velocity -- where we have a sufficiently comprehensive panel of therapies to enable us to push back the ill health of old age faster than time is passing. And that way, we buy ourselves enough time to develop more therapies further as time goes on," he said.

"What we can actually predict in terms of how long people will live is absolutely nothing, because it will be determined by the risk of death from other causes like accidents," he said.

"But there really shouldn't be any limit imposed by how long ago you were born. The whole point of maintenance is that it works indefinitely." -- http://old.news.yahoo.com/

CELL THERAPY

For some, the prospect of living for hundreds of years is not particularly attractive, either, as it conjures up an image of generations of sick, weak old people and societies increasingly less able to cope.

But de Grey says that's not what he's working for. Keeping the killer diseases of old age at bay is the primary focus.

"This is absolutely not a matter of keeping people alive in a bad state of health," he told Reuters. "This is about preventing people from getting sick as a result of old age. The particular therapies that we are working on will only deliver long life as a side effect of delivering better health."

De Grey divides the damage caused by aging into seven main categories for which repair techniques need to be developed if his prediction for continual maintenance is to come true.

He notes that while for some categories, the science is still in its earliest stages, there are others where it's already almost there.

"Stem cell therapy is a big part of this. It's designed to reverse one type of damage, namely the loss of cells when cells die and are not automatically replaced, and it's already in clinical trials (in humans)," he said.

Stem cell therapies are currently being trialed in people with spinal cord injuries, and de Grey and others say they may one day be used to find ways to repair disease-damaged brains and hearts.

CHALLENGE

Exactly how far and how fast life expectancy will increase in the future is a subject of some debate, but the trend is clear. An average of three months is being added to life expectancy every year at the moment and experts estimate there could be a million centenarians across the world by 2030.

To date, the world's longest-living person on record lived to 122 and in Japan alone there were more than 44,000 centenarians in 2010.

Some researchers say, however, that the trend toward longer lifespan may falter due to an epidemic of obesity now spilling over from rich nations into the developing world.

De Grey's ideas may seem far-fetched, but $20,000 offered in 2005 by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Technology Review journal for any molecular biologist who showed that de Grey's SENS theory was "so wrong that it was unworthy of learned debate" was never won.

The judges on that panel were prompted into action by an angry put-down of de Grey from a group of nine leading scientists who dismissed his work as "pseudo science."

They concluded that this label was not fair, arguing instead that SENS "exists in a middle ground of yet-to-be-tested ideas that some people may find intriguing but which others are free to doubt."

By Health and Science Correspondent Kate Kelland Health And Science Correspondent Kate Kelland â€" Mon Jul 4, 2:39 pm ET

LONDON (Reuters) â€" If Aubrey de Grey's predictions are right, the first person who will live to see their 150th birthday has already been born. And the first person to live for 1,000 years could be less than 20 years younger.

A biomedical gerontologist and chief scientist of a foundation dedicated to longevity research, de Grey reckons that within his own lifetime doctors could have all the tools they need to "cure" aging -- banishing diseases that come with it and extending life indefinitely.

"I'd say we have a 50/50 chance of bringing aging under what I'd call a decisive level of medical control within the next 25 years or so," de Grey said in an interview before delivering a lecture at Britain's Royal Institution academy of science.

"And what I mean by decisive is the same sort of medical control that we have over most infectious diseases today."

De Grey sees a time when people will go to their doctors for regular "maintenance," which by then will include gene therapies, stem cell therapies, immune stimulation and a range of other advanced medical techniques to keep them in good shape.

De Grey lives near Cambridge University where he won his doctorate in 2000 and is chief scientific officer of the non-profit California-based SENS (Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence) Foundation, which he co-founded in 2009.

He describes aging as the lifelong accumulation of various types of molecular and cellular damage throughout the body.

"The idea is to engage in what you might call preventative geriatrics, where you go in to periodically repair that molecular and cellular damage before it gets to the level of abundance that is pathogenic," he explained.

General Topic / Syphilis Epidemic Raging in China
July 04, 2011, 09:46:51 PM

A Chinese prostitute is caught in bed with two men at
a brothel in Guangzhou. Syphilis has become a viciously-
growing epidemic there, driven by prostitution, internal
migration and poor health controls, a new study warns.

Syphilis, virtually eradicated after the founding New China in 1949, has become a viciously-growing epidemic there, driven by prostitution, internal migration and poor health controls, a new study warns.

In 1993, the reported rate of syphilis in China was a mere 0.2 cases per 100,000.

In 2005, it had surged to 5.7 cases per 100,000, a figure that may well be a serious under-estimate, according to the paper by Chinese epidemiologists.

In addition, the number of babies born with syphilis has shot up. Congenital syphilis occurred among just 0.01 per 100,000 live births in 1991; in 2005 it was 19.68 -- an annual rise of nearly 72 percent over that time.

"Surveillance data and focussed reports from throughout China provide compelling evidence of a substantial and worsening syphilis epidemic in individuals at high risk and in the general population," the research says.

"The spread of syphilis in China has been insidious and has only recently attracted the attention it deserves."

The paper, written by experts from China's National Centre for STD (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) Control, appears in Saturday's issue of the British health journal The Lancet.

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by a bacterium, Treponema pallidum, that can be treated by antibiotics. If untreated, it can cause genital ulcers, damage the cardiovascular and nervous systems and brain, affect fertility and foetal health.

By the time New China was founded in 1949, China had one of the biggest syphilis epidemics in history: one person in 20 in some large cities had the disease, and the rate was two to three percent among dwellers in the countryside.

In 1952, the Chinese government launched an unprecedented campaign, instituting mass screening for the T. pallidum germ, providing free treatment to infected individuals and closing brothels. By the 1960s, the initiative virtually eradicated syphilis in China.

The Lancet paper says that this success ironically worsened the danger for the Chinese population when the country opened up its economy in the 1990s, unleashing the social earthquake that continues to this day.

As syphilis had been virtually absent for 20 years, the general population of young, sexually active individuals had become "completely susceptible" to infection, it says.

The driver for the epidemic has mainly been sex work, which has risen with the expansion of China's vast, shifting population of migrant workers.

There have also been changes in sexual habits, including a move towards sexual intercourse at an earlier age, with more partners and before marriage but also with poor use of condoms.

Syphilis prevalence is highest in the big-growth regions of coastal China, led by Shanghai (55.3 cases per 100,000), Zhejiang (35.9) and Fujian (26.8 ).

This was followed by Beijing (24.9 cases per 100,000) and the Zhujiang river delta, comprising Guangxi, Guangdong and Hainan provinces, with rates of 14-21 per 100,000 individuals.

Other countries have likewise reported a resurgence of syphilis in high-risk groups recent years. The United States reported a 2.7 per cent infection rate in 2004.

The paper, lead-authored by Chen Xiangsheng, admits that the picture could be even worse, as the data is based on 26 nationwide "sentinel sites" which receive details of patient admissions from government STD clinics.

Many people, though, may get treated at family planning centres, gynaecological clinics and other facilities or by pharmacists or private practitioners, and these cases go largely unreported.

In addition, the increasing privatisation of health care in China has left many people without the resources to get screened or treated for syphilis. -- http://www1.china.org.cn/

Talk of the Town / Burning The Chinese Flag

Police officers watch in the background as protest leader Elly Pamatong burns a mock Chinese flag during a brief Fourth-of-July protest at the US Embassy on Monday July 4, 2011 to call for US support in the Philippines' claim of the disputed Spratly islands in the South China Sea. The Spratlys, a chain of barren, largely uninhabited islands, reefs and banks in the South China Sea are claimed wholly by China, Taiwan and Vietnam and partly by the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei. The islands are believed to be atop vast oil and gas deposits. (AP Photo/Bullit Marquez)

PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III's promises bear no fruit after his first year in office, said environmental advocates, who once perceived the Chief Executive as the most eco-friendly candidate in the last national elections.

EcoWaste Coalition, a grassroots environmental network, said the President failed to show adequate leadership in solving the country's longstanding problem on garbage.

The group, which gave the President a score of 2.65 points out of 10, said his government has failed to shut down "polluting" dumpsites and overturn costly "obsession" with technology fixes such as landfills and incinerators.

Specifically, the government ranked lowest in terms of integrating waste pickers in ecological solid waste management programs, enforcing the ban on waste incineration, and prohibiting the open burning of discards.

The administration likewise fell short in disallowing the entry of toxic waste, ensuring the environmentally sound management of hazardous waste materials such as electronic waste, and in directing the closure, cleanup and rehabilitation of illegal dumpsites.

EcoWaste said the low score should serve as a reminder to the government of not being remiss in its duty on zero waste resource management, according to its president Roy Alvarez.

For one, the group asked President Aquino to preside at least one full meeting of the National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC) to secure its budget and set direction.

EcoWaste also sought the President's initiative to hold fully accountable the laggards among the local chief executives in the implementation of the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act (Republic Act 9003).

By TODD PITMAN - Associated Press | AP â€" Mon, Jul 4, 2011

BANGKOK (AP) â€" The woman poised to become Thailand's first female prime minister acknowledged huge challenges in reconciling her divided country, after an election landslide seen as a rebuke of the military-backed establishment that ousted her brother in a 2006 coup.

Preliminary results from Sunday's poll showed 44-year-old Yingluck Shinawatra's Pheu Thai party winning the majority it needs to form the next government. If confirmed, the large mandate will likely boost Thailand's stability in the short term and reduce the chance of intervention by the coup-prone military five years after it ousted Yingluck's fugitive brother-in-exile, former premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

The victory comes one year after the government crushed protests by Thaksin supporters with a bloody crackdown that culminated some of the worst violence here in 20 years and ended with the capital ablaze in a wave of arson attacks allegedly carried out by fleeing protesters.

In a late night victory speech in Bangkok on Sunday, Yingluck said: "I don't like to say that Pheu Thai has won, but I'd rather say the people have given the Pheu Thai party and myself a chance to serve them."

"There's still a lot of work to be done in the future, in terms of the well-being of the people and for the country's unity and reconciliation," Yingluck said.

On Monday, incumbent Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva resigned as leader of the outgoing ruling party, Democrat Party spokesman Buranaj Smutharaks.
