Video law holds up in first test against animal fighter

PITTSBURGH--Reaching a unanimous verdict in only 45 minutes, a federal jury on January 13, 2005 convicted video distributor
Robert Stevens of three counts of selling depictions of illegal cruelty to animals across state lines.

The case was the first court test of 1999 legislation introduced by Representative Elton Gallegly (R-California).  U.S. Senior District Judge Alan N. Bloch rejected federal public defender Michael Novara's contentions that the law violated Stevens' First Amendment right to freedom of expression, and that it was misapplied because the law was introduced to address "wanton cruelty to animals designed to appeal to a prurient interest in sex."

The law prohibits the interstate distribution of videos or films depicting illegal cruelty to animals, if they are without "serious religious, political, scientific, educational, journalistic, historical, or art value."  Stevens, 64, of Pittsville, Virginia, in 2003 sold two videotapes of dogfights and one video of a "hog/dog rodeo" to investigators for the Pennsylvania State Police and USDA Office of the Inspector General.

Stevens advertised the videos for sale in the Sporting Dog Journal, whose publisher James Fricchione, 34, was convicted in March 2004 of six felonies and five misdemeanors for allegedly promoting dogfights.  Setting Stevens' sentencing for April 21, Bloch ordered him to surrender to the court any pit bull terriers he owns by January 24, and to refrain from any involvement in training, breeding, selling or otherwise dealing with pit bulls.

Stevens also may not associate with any other persons involved in such activities, and may not sell any equipment that might be used to train dogs to fight.  Brian Haaser, USDA Office of the Inspector General chief special agent-in-charge of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast Region, said in a prepared statement that the "landmark investigation and conviction will open the doors" to further prosecutions of alleged dogfighters based on seizures of videotaped evidence.

The Gallegly bill was introduced in response to public outrage over Internet sales of "crush videos," depicting animals being crushed to death by scantily clad women and transvestites.  The traffic came to light when British Customs in mid-1997 intercepted several videos mailed by one "Jeff Vilencia" of "Squish Productions" in California.  British Customs took the videos to Martin Daly of the Royal SPCA.  Daly eventually enlisted investigative help from Cassandra Brown of the London Sunday Telegraph.  Unaware of that case, then-America Online "Animals & Society" host Susan Roghair, now producer of Animal Rights Online, independently discovered several web sites which promoted and sold crush videos.

Roghair in October 1997 sought help from ANIMAL PEOPLE, PETA, AnimalTalk host Dick Weevil, and Ohio animal rights attorney Shawn Thomas--who turned out to be pursuing a parallel investigation of his own, after finding some of the same web sites.  On October 6, 1997, at Thomas' request, ANIMAL PEOPLE postponed publishing an article about crush videos to avoid jeopardizing the investigation.  Cassandra Brown in November 1997 scooped ANIMAL PEOPLE.

Learning thereby of the British investigation, ANIMAL PEOPLE introduced the British and American investigators by e-mail.  Unknown to any other investigators, the Suffolk County SPCA was separately closing in on crush video producer Thomas Capriola, 30, of Islip Terrace, Long Island.

Two days after Capriola was arrested in May 1998, ANIMAL PEOPLE introduced the Suffolk County SPCA investigators to Daly, Thomas, and Roghair.  Capriola in December 2000 pleaded guilty to misdemeanor cruelty to animals and fifth-degree possession of marijuana, and was sentenced to serve 280 hours of community service with three years on probation.

The original investigation brought the August 1999 arrests and eventual plea bargain convictions of "crush video" star Diane Aileen Chaffin, 35, of La Puente, California, and producer Gary Lynn Thomason, 48, of Anaheim.  Each drew a year in jail and three years on probation.  Convicted in Britain were Craig Chapman, 27, Christine Besford, 26, Sarah Goode, 22, and Tharaza Smallwood, 22. Chapman was in May 2002 sentenced to serve two years in jail.  The three women drew four months each.  All four defendants were also fined and banned for life from keeping pets. (From ANIMAL PEOPLE, January/February 2005)

In This Recession, Even a Police Dog Got Laid Off

By: Everett Rosenfeld
Time Magazine Newsfeed, 08 June 2011

A harsh economic climate has negatively affected cities and municipal services across the country. But the downturn hit home for a five-year-old German Shepherd named Daro earlier this month.

Daro, a police dog for the East Haven Police Department in Connecticut, was forcibly retired after the town council cut his budget. As the only police dog in the EHPD, Daro's early retirement has angered the town's police union and some citizens, according to the New Haven Register.

“My concern is why it's not being funded anymore,” Sgt. John Miller, police union president told the Register. “It's a valuable tool. It's been a proven success ... It's a valuable tool for police work these days.”

Tama (born April 29, 1999) is a calico cat who is the station master and operating officer at Kishi Station in Kinokawa, Wakayama, Japan.

In April 2006, the Wakayama Electric Railway converted all stations on the Kishigawa Line from manned to unmanned in an effort to cut costs.  Station masters were selected from employees of local businesses near each station.  For Kishi station, Toshiko Koyama, the neighborhood grocer, was selected as station master.  Koyama had adopted Tama and other stray cats, and he fed them at the station.

In January 2007, railway officials decided to officially name Tama the station master.  As station master her primary duty is to greet passengers.  The position comes with a stationmaster's hat; in lieu of a salary, the railway provides Tama with free cat food.

The publicity from Tama's appointment led to an increase in passengers by 17% for that month as compared to January 2006; ridership statistics for March 2007 showed a 10% increase over the previous financial year.

A study has estimated that the publicity surrounding Tama has contributed 1.1 billion Yen to the local economy.  In January 2008, Tama was promoted to "super station master" in a ceremony attended by the president of the company and the mayor; as a result of her promotion, she is "the only female in a managerial position" in the company.  Her new position has an "office"—a converted ticket booth containing a litter box.

In January 2010, railway officials promoted Tama to the post of "Operating Officer" in recognition of her contribution to expanding the customer base. Tama will maintain the stationmaster's job while taking over the new job, and is the first cat to become an executive of a railroad corporation.

Her staff consisted of two feline assistant stationmasters, Chibi (born May 12, 2000) and an orange tabby cat named Miiko (October 3, 1998 - July 20, 2009).  Now only Chibi remains.

Tama appeared in a documentary about cats titled La Voie du chat in French and Katzenlektionen in German by Italian filmmaker Myriam Tonelotto, broadcast on European TV channel ARTE in April 2009.

Kishigawa Line announced that it was releasing a new "Tama Densha" (Tama railcar/train) train that was customized with cartoon depictions of Tama.  It began running in spring 2009.

Tama wears a decoration of "Wakayama de knight" (a pun, "It got to be Wakayama" in Japanese) given by Governor of Wakayama

Library Cats: Feline Book Experts

Library cats are a popular sight in public libraries across the US and around the world.  The majority of patrons seem to be in favor of the feline bookworms.  Not everyone is always happy about their presence, however, often citing allergies as a problem.
Still the number of cats doing book duty has risen over the last 25 years.

Despite some protesters, many libraries have taken on cats, sometimes more than one.  Those with cat allergies are left to deal with them on their own.

Animals with Jobs/Library Cats: Feline Book Experts-1

The most famous kitty to dwell in the den of the books is probably Dewey Readmore Books, of Spencer, IA.  Dewey's fame reached worldwide status, and condolences came from all over the world when he died in 2006.  His obituary appeared in hundreds of newspapers.

The book, Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World  by Vicki Myron, made the New York Times bestseller list and is being made into a movie with Meryl Streep.

Vicki has a new feline friend now, named Page Turner.  Originally, Page Turner was reported as female, but turned out to be male.  Page is not a library kitty, but Vicki's own cat.  Like Dewey, Page was a stray, and is a tabby and also resembles Dewey quite a bit.   Unlike the Spencer library's cat, however, Dewey Decimal is a female.  Her human could no longer take care of her, so now she spends her days surrounded by books, typing and using the phone.

Nyx the blind library cat is at the Chesterfield County Public Library in Virginia.  Nyx was born with no eyes and had surgery to sew her eye sockets shut.  She navigates by echolocation, and seems to be doing well.  Like all cats who live in libraries, she is obviously spoiled.

wowie!  cute gyod tuod ang duha.  it looks like it's the little girl who will grow up to be a good christian.

Animal rights are widely known and accepted in western culture but despite this there are topics and events which happen every year that often cause much debate and controversy on the public and media forums. From high profile support from celebrities, outspoken models from the fashion world and animal campaigners, animal rights is an issue that has sparked outrage and even government debate. This is a list of 10 widely discussed topics of animal use that some support openly, while others refuse to accept them under any circumstances.

10 Fur Trade

Worldwide it’s estimated that 40-50 million animals are killed every year for their fur, including raccoon dogs, rabbits, foxes, mink, and chinchillas. The fur trade has gathered much protest from campaigners for the inhumane way the animals are reared and killed, often in cages where they suffer from numerous physical and behavioral abnormalities induced by the stress of caging conditions and then killed methods that preserve the pelt, such as gassing, neck-breaking and anal electrocution.

Recently China has come under attack from extremist campaigners such as PETA and media over the cruel photos and videos of dogs and cats being kept in awful conditions and then bludgeoned, hanged, bled to death, strangled with wire nooses, and even skinned alive so that their fur can be turned into trim and trinkets. Fur from China is often mislabeled as that from another species and sold throughout the world so it is difficult to know for certain where the fur you are buying came from.

9 Animal Testing

Some people will say animal testing is necessary in the furthering of medical treatment for humans but the other side of this argument is that animal testing is completely unacceptable and treatment for humans should be only be tested on humans.

It is estimated that 50 to 100 million vertebrate animals worldwide are used annually in animal testing. Although much larger numbers of invertebrates are used and the use of flies and worms as model organisms is very important, experiments on invertebrates are largely unregulated and not included in statistics. Most animals are euthanized after being used in an experiment.

Most research is carried out within universities, medical schools, pharmaceutical companies, farms, defense establishments, and commercial facilities that provide animal-testing services to industry.

Supporters of the practice, such as the British Royal Society, argue that virtually every medical achievement in the 20th century relied on the use of animals in some way, with the Institute for Laboratory Animal Research of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences arguing that even sophisticated computers are unable to model interactions between molecules, cells, tissues, organs, organisms, and the environment, making animal research necessary in many areas. Despite this some scientists and animal rights organizations, such as PETA and BUAV, question the legitimacy of it, arguing that it is cruel, poorly regulated and that medical progress is being held back by misleading animal models among other reasons. Regulation on animal testing varies within various countries.

8 Dolphin and Whale Slaughter

Every year, hundreds or even thousands of dolphin and small whale are rounded up and forced into a small hidden cove in Taiji where they are slaughtered in the worlds largest scale kill of its kind, lasting up to six months. Once trapped inside the cove the animals are killed by having their throats slashed or by being speared.  Media images of the event often show the usual blue waters of the cove blood red and some even go further to show the animals sounding in distress. Animal campaigners have challenged the Japanese government to change its laws but whale meat and counterfeit dolphin meat sold as whale meat help to keep this horrific event continuing while the Japanese governments response has been using pest control as an explanation.

7 Seal Clubbing

Seal hunting has drawn growing media attention due to the disturbing images of seals and their pups being clubbed to death. The main sealing states are Canada, Greenland, Namibia, Norway and Russia although it is Canada that has gathered the most controversy with celebrities such as Paul McCartney and former wife, Heather Mills speaking out against it. In Canada 2006, 325,000 harp seals, as well as 10,000 hooded seals and 10,400 grey seals were killed. An additional 10,000 animals were allocated for hunting by Aboriginal peoples. Canadian law forbids the killing of pup seals until they have began molting at 12-15 days.

While the steal trade is an extremely controversial issue, many livelihoods depend on the seal trade. The total Canadian seal product exports were valued at $18 million (CAD) in 2006. Of this, $5.4 million went to the EU, although in 2007, Belgium became the first EU state to ban seal products. In 2009 the EU parliament successfully voted to ban the import of seal products. Denmark, Romania and Austria abstained form the law passed by the EU council on July 27, 2009.

6 Animals in Medicine

High numbers of animals are used each year worldwide for their use in medicine. China is probably the most notable for its use of endangered tiger.

Animals used in traditional medicine are tigers, leopards, sharks, saiga antelope, elephants, rhinoceros, pangolins, tortoises, seahorses, musk deer, as well as 7 of the 8 species of bear. The Asiatic Black Bear (more commonly known as the Moon Bear) are kept in captivity on Bear Bile Farms to enable the regular extraction of their bile acid.

Tiger bones, skin, fat, whiskers, tail, penises and gall bladders among other parts are believed to cure ailments, keep black magic at bay and possess aphrodisiac properties. It is estimated that there are approximately 5,000 wild tigers left, only 5% of the population number that were alive in the 1900s. About 75 percent are in India while less than 50 are believed to be found in China’s forests. The United States is home to some 10,000 captive tigers, owned by zoos, sanctuaries and private individuals.

5 Animals as Food

It is estimated that worldwide, 140 billion animals are killed for human consumption ever year. The UK, which has a projected 2009 population of 61,126,832, consumed an amazing 2.5 billion animals every year alone.

Official figures show that UK abattoirs slaughter 900 million poultry, and 30 million cattle, sheep and pigs every year. These figures do not include imported meat; the UK is probably a net importer so it is likely that they consume close to 1 billion farm animals a year. Tonnage figures from the Marine Fisheries Agency together with estimates for average weight of fish suggest that, in addition, about 1,500 million sea fish and 80 million farmed salmon are consumed.

It’s easy to see why vegetarians and vegans are prominent campaigners for animal rights. Animals on factory farms have no legal protection from cruelty that could be illegal if it were inflicted on dogs or cats, including neglect, mutilations, genetic manipulation, drug regimens that cause chronic pain and crippling, transport through all weather extremes and gruesome and violent slaughter for human consumption.

4 Animals in Sport

There are many types of sport in which animals are used for; hunting being the most recognized and debated. One of the most recently debated has been fox hunting in the United Kingdom which was outlawed in 2004 against large protests and backlash from hunters who wished for the sport to continue using live foxes. Over 250 million animals are killed each year by hunting in the US alone and this does not include the millions of animal figures that are not maintained by state wildlife agencies.
Animals in sport also include Bullfighting which is still practiced under Spanish and Portuguese traditions. Cockfighting is now illegal but legal fights still take place around the world including cow fighting and camel wrestling.
Horse and dog racing are also very popular around the world, attracting many people for legal gambling but even this has attracted debate. Thousands of greyhounds die each year from racing injuries or exhaustion and over 800 racehorses die each year from fatal injuries on US racetracks alone.

3 Pedigree Breeding

Pedigree breeding of dogs has attracted a lot of attention in the past few years and many think it is cruel and unfair to the welfare of the animal because of the effects on the lifespan of the animal. In 2008 the BBC dropped the dog show Crufts over concerns about breeding practices leaving dogs with debilitating conditions and inherited genetic disease such as a prize-winning Cavalier King Charles suffering from syringomyelia which meant that its skull was too small for its brain and also pugs suffering epilepsy.
It is not known how many dogs worldwide suffer the genetic effects of extreme pedigree breeding but the debilitating effect is well known. Because of the lack of genetic variation, birth defects and inherited diseases in breeds such as deafness in Dalmatians, heart disease in Boxer dogs and hip dysplasia (abnormal hip joint development) in German Shepherd dogs has become extremely common.

2 Zoos

Although most zoos are of a high standard nowadays and many are even encouraging breeding programs for endangered species, it is still argued that animals should not be kept in captivity but encouraged back into their native environment.

There are an estimated 5 million animals in zoos worldwide and a report by the World Society for the Protection of Animals showed that only 1,200 out of the 10,000 zoos worldwide are registered for captive breeding and wildlife conservation and that only 2 percent of the world’s threatened or endangered species are registered in breeding programs.

In some Chinese zoos, live killing is encouraged where people can feed wild animals. In the Badaltearing Safari Park, visitors can throw live goats into the lions’ enclosure and watch them being eaten, or can purchase live chickens tied to bamboo rods to dangle into lion pens. Visitors can drive through the lion’s compound on buses with specially designed chutes leading into the enclosure into which they can push live chickens. In the Xiongsen Bear and Tiger Mountain Village near Guilin in southeast China, live cows and pigs are thrown to tigers to amuse visitors.

1 Animals in film

The use of animals by filmmakers has often received criticism for allegedly harmful, and sometimes lethal, treatment of animals during production although laws on animal rights are now stricter.

One of the most infamous examples of animal cruelty in film was Michael Cimino’s legendary flop Heaven’s Gate, in which numerous animals were killed and brutalized during production. Cimino allegedly killed chickens and bled horses from the neck to gather samples of their blood to smear on actors for Heaven’s Gate, and also allegedly had a horse blown up with dynamite while shooting a battle sequence, the shot of which made it into the film. After the release of the film Reds, the star and director of the picture, Warren Beatty apologized for his Spanish film crew’s use of tripwires on horses while filming a battle scene, when Beatty wasn’t present. Tripwires were used against horses when Rambo III and The Thirteenth Warrior were being filmed. An ox was sliced nearly in half during production of Apocalypse Now, while a donkey was bled to death for dramatic effect for the film Manderlay, in a scene later cut from the film.

Although there are now laws covering animal use in filmmaking in America and Europe, other eastern countries such as South Korea have been criticized for the use of animals such as in the film, The Isle, in which a real frog is skinned alive while fish are mutilated.

such disheartening facts.  luckily there are organizations with enough clout to make public such cruelties.  for starters, there is general awareness now.  and just like the development of civilizations, positive changes have been coming out, slowly.  for one, at the end of films, it is now standard to have a disclaimer after the credits that no animals have been hurt during filming.  this is true because a film has to be certified by animal rights groups as such.  and animal rights representatives are present during filming.

Animals with Jobs/Oscar the Therapy Cat-2

Oscar has a job as a therapy cat in a nursing home.  He's known as the "cat that predicts death" as he often comforts patients during their final hours.

Oscar's job is in a nursing home in Providence, R.I.  Apparently, Oscar, a tabby and white who was rescued from an animal shelter, has the ability to sense when people are going to die.

As a hospice cat at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Oscar works in an end-stage dementia unit and it's inevitable that some of his patients will die.

What's unusual, though, is the frequency with which Oscar chooses to spend time with patients in their last hours of life. Doctors and workers at the nursing home have reported that when Oscar senses a patient is going to pass on, he jumps up on the bed with them and begins purring.

He often shows up a few hours prior to the patient's death, and he leaves their bedside shortly after. Reports of his amazing talent started early in his career, and Oscar has reportedly now predicted 50 deaths.

While it's not known just how Oscar is able to do this, he often keeps family members company during this stressful time. His actions also may alert staff members to the impending passing of a patient, giving them time to call the family so they can show up and be with their loved one.

"His mere presence at the bedside is viewed by physicians and nursing home staff as an almost absolute indicator of impending death, allowing staff members to adequately notify families." -Dr. David Dosa

Oscar, who has a kitty co-worker named Mya, has received an award for his service to humanity.  Dr. Dosa published the accounts of this psychic kitty in The New England Journal of Medicine.

Scientist profiles cat who predicts death
Dr. David Dosa sought to understand Oscar the cat’s unexplainable talent

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island — The scientist in Dr. David Dosa was skeptical when first told that Oscar, an aloof cat kept by a nursing home, regularly predicted patients' deaths by snuggling alongside them in their final hours.

Dosa's doubts eroded after he and his colleagues tallied about 50 correct calls made by Oscar over five years, a process he explains in a book released this week, "Making Rounds With Oscar: The Extraordinary Gift of an Ordinary Cat."  The feline's bizarre talent astounds Dosa, but he finds Oscar's real worth in his fierce insistence on being present when others turn away from life's most uncomfortable topic: death.

"People actually were taking great comfort in this idea, that this animal was there and might be there when their loved ones eventually pass," Dosa said.  "He was there when they couldn't be."

Dosa, 37, a geriatrician and professor at Brown University, works on the third floor of the Steere House, which treats patients with severe dementia.  It's usually the last stop for people so ill they cannot speak, recognize their spouses and spend their days lost in fragments of memory.

A comforting presence

He once feared that families would be horrified by the furry grim reaper, especially after Dosa made Oscar famous in a 2007 essay in the New England Journal of Medicine.  Instead, he says many caregivers consider Oscar a comforting presence, and some have praised him in newspaper death notices and eulogies.

"Maybe they're seeing what they want to see," he said, "but what they're seeing is a comfort to them in a real difficult time in their lives."

The nursing home adopted Oscar, a medium-haired cat with a gray-and-brown back and white belly, in 2005 because its staff thinks pets make the Steere House a home.  They play with visiting children and prove a welcome distraction for patients and doctors alike.

After a year, the staff noticed that Oscar would spend his days pacing from room to room.  He sniffed and looked at the patients but rarely spent much time with anyone — except when they had just hours to live.

Oscar's accuracy

He's accurate enough that the staff — including Dosa — know it's time to call family members when Oscar stretches beside their patients, who are generally too ill to notice his presence.  If kept outside the room of a dying patient, he'll scratch at doors and walls, trying to get in.

Nurses once placed Oscar in the bed of a patient they thought gravely ill.  Oscar wouldn't stay put, and the staff thought his streak was broken.  Turns out, the medical professionals were wrong, and the patient rallied for two days.  But in the final hours, Oscar held his bedside vigil without prompting.

Dosa does not explain Oscar scientifically in his book, although he theorizes the cat imitates the nurses who raised him or smells odors given off by dying cells, perhaps like some dogs who scientists say can detect cancer using their sense of scent.

Coping with death

At its heart, Dosa's search is more about how people cope with death than Oscar's purported ability to predict it.  Dosa suffers from inflammatory arthritis, which could render his joints useless.  He worries about losing control of his life in old age, much as his patients have lost theirs.

Parts of his book are fictionalized.  Dosa said several patients are composite characters, though the names and stories of the caregivers he interviews are real and many feel guilty.  Donna Richards told Dosa that she felt guilty for putting her mother in a nursing home.  She felt guilty for not visiting enough.  When caring for her mother, Richards felt guilty about missing her teenage son's swimming meets.

Dosa learns to live for the moment, much like Oscar, who delights in naps and chin scratches or the patient who recovers enough to walk the hall holding the hand of the husband she'll eventually forget.

The doctor advises worried family members to simply be present for their loved ones.

Richards was at her mother's bedside nonstop as she died.  After three days, a nurse persuaded her to go home for a brief rest.  Despite her misgivings, Richards agreed.  Her mother died a short while later.

But she didn't die alone.  Oscar was there.

Britain's Saddest Puppy
(fate is cruel in this case)

Six-month-old puppy Princess has such delicate skin she can't go outside.
While other dogs run free at Britain's Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary,
Princess must gaze through the window. But this canine, otherwise
known as Britain's Saddest Puppy, has become a minor celebrity in the media.

Naked Man Challenges Pamplona Bull
Sunday, July 10, 2011

Daily Mail Flying high: The streaker was tossed up into the air by a young calf during the suelta de vaquillas

KOMPAS.com - He might have been high on adrenaline and low on sleep - but it was no excuse for this naked bull-runner who was detained by police shortly after being thrown into the air by a young calf.

He joined thousands of thrill-seekers to run with the bulls on a crowded fourth day at the San Fermin festival in Pamplona yesterday.  Ten people were injured and no one was gored.

But the now infamous streaker, who was tossed up into the air by a young calf in the bullring after the running, was arrested for causing a 'public disturbance'.  Several runners tripped, fell and were trampled as crowds raced alongside the massive bulls of the famous Miura breeding estate, founded in 1849.

The Sunday run is usually the biggest of the eight that take place annually and is particularly favoured by aficionados because it traditionally features Miuras, renowned as Spain’s largest fighting bulls.

Navarra Hospital reported in a statement that 10 people received treatment for minor injuries including arm and head trauma.  Nine of them - all Spaniards of ages ranging from 19 to 41 years old - were kept in for observation.

The naked bull-runner suffered minor bruising to his face.  Two days ago a 24 year-old Australian tourist was gored in the thigh by a bull, opening an artery, and is in a serious condition in hospital.

Pamplona experts at state television TVE said around 3,500 people had run with the bulls on Sunday. One runner slipped and fell in front of the bunched herd and was trampled near the beginning, a second one tripped close to the halfway point and was seen to be hit by several flying hooves, and a small group jostled each other and hit the cobblestones as the bulls neared the bullring.

The run covers 928 yards (850 meters) from an enclosure just outside Pamplona’s medieval stone wall, where the pedigree animals spend the night, to the downtown bullring where fights known as 'corridas' take place each afternoon of the festival in honor of the city’s patron saint.

Sunday’s run was quick at 2 minutes, 29 seconds and would have finished even sooner but for one straggler that looked around and charged at several herders in the ring before being guided into a corral.

The largest Miura was a black specimen called Macareno that weighed 695 kilograms (1,532 pounds) while the lightest tipped the scales at a mere 540 kilograms (1,190 pounds), the games and spectacles branch of Navarre regional police said in a statement.

Despite the animals’ size and musclebound appearance, experts admire Miuras for their explosive acceleration, stamina and grace, characteristics that inspired legendary Italian car maker the late Ferruccio Lamborghini to name one of his iconic sports cars after the breed.

Animal rights group seeks closure of zoos
By Evelyn Macairan (The Philippine Star) Updated June 07, 2006 12:00 AM

Garbed in black and white "prison suits" and wearing tiger masks, members of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) staged a 30-minute protest in front of the Manila Zoo and Botanical Gardens to demand the liberation of caged animals.

The animal rights activists called for the return of the animals to their natural habitat. Their demonstration is part of a worldwide campaign against zoos.

Outside the gates of Manila Zoo along Adriatico street in Malate, the demonstrators lifted banners that read, "Zoos: Cruel Animal Prisons," and demanded the closure of the Manila Zoo.

They chose to hold their demonstration at the 47-year-old Manila Zoo to attract attention. The group plans to hold succeeding protests in other zoos to catch the attention of local government officials.

PETA spokesperson Jamie Alarcon said they are open to the idea of holding a dialogue with Manila Mayor Lito Atienza.

In a statement, PETA campaign manager Rochelle Regodon said animals in zoos are "serving a lifetime sentence with no parole."

"Let’s just leave them in the wild and use zoos as sanctuaries for animals rescued from circuses, marine parks and exploitative forms of entertainment."

Alarcon said. "Since our Independence Day is only one week away, we are urging the Philippines to become the first zoo-free country in the region. Since we are the first democracy here in Asia, simulan din natin ang pagpapalaya sa mga hayop."

She added a number of animals brought to zoos were uprooted from their natural surroundings and from their families at a tender age.

PETA distributed copies of their "zoochosis checklist," which encourages zoo visitors to closely observe the behavior of animals.

Questions include the following: Were the animals engaged in biting of bars of the cages; licking or repeatedly licking the bars/walls; pacing or continuous walking back and forth; neck-twisting or unnatural twisting and rolling of the neck; vomiting; circling or walking in circles; coprophagia or playing with and eating excrement; head-bobbing; over-grooming; and self mutilation or repeatedly tail-biting, leg-chewing, head bashing?

Meanwhile, Manila Zoo administrator Romulo Bernardo said over the years, they have been improving conditions and surroundings and that their effort has met international standards for animal dwellings.

"Zoos have an important educational function because by seeing animals, you will better understand them in a way you can’t see in TV or books. Children need to see animals up close in order to appreciate them, and work for their conservation," Bernardo said.

Besides, he said, zoos also serve as a center for unwanted exotic animals such as birds and snakes. "Some of those brought in were injured and might die if they are returned to the wild."

He added that most zoos are centers for captive breeding.

"Most animals are products of captive breeding programs. They lived in the wild, but can’t survive in the wild. Those animals are vanishing because of the loss of habitat," he said.

A dog whipper was a church official charged with removing unruly dogs from a church or church grounds during services. In some areas of Europe during the 16th to 19th centuries it was not uncommon for household dogs to accompany – or at least follow – their owners to church services. If these animals became disruptive it was the job of the dog whipper to remove them from the church, allowing the service to continue in peace. Dog whippers were usually provided with a whip (hence the title) or a pair of large wooden tongs with which to remove the animals. They were generally paid for their services, and records of payments to the local dog whipper exist in old parish account books in many English churches. -- http://listverse.com/
